[ s**cide warning ] - a big problem i have with sonic prime s3 ( amongst several other ones i have ).

i've talked about this at length ( more or less ) with a friend of mine and this bothered both of us, so i wanted to see if anyone else had this issue.

according to one scene in s3, Sonic is canonically suicidal. not self-sacrificial ( which can mean the same thing, but often doesn't ), but suicidal.

for comparisons sake, let's talk about Leonardo from ROTTMNT, who was the example of self-sacrificial.

Leonardo and Sonic are in a similar boat. they made a mistake ( though, i firmly believe Sonic's was less of a mistake and more of an unfortunate circumstance ), and they try to fix it throughout the story.

while i'm not going to debate Sonic's characterization here ( cuz i think it's utter dogshit and is for an entirely different post ), i will talk about the mindsets that make these two different.

Leonardo didn't want to die here. he was fine with doing so, but only because he believed that would keep his family safe. if he did want to die, we wouldn't see Leo put so much thought into his actions.

we see that he isn't looking for the opportunity to die. throughout the entire movie, he's self-destructive because he knows that, at least to some extent, the plan going wrong was his fault. he knows ( or believes, depending on how you view the movie ) that Raph sacrificing himself only happened because Leo didn't listen.

so, Leonardo isn't suicidal, but self-sacrificial. because he just wants his family back.

now, let's move back to Sonic.

( this is not the scene where he's suicidal, obviously )

when Sonic goes to confront Nine on his own, Nine says at some point:

"you want to save everyone. friends, foes, total strangers. you say it's because you're a hero and that's what heroes do, but deep down... after what you did, destroying your own home, it's the only way you can ever live with yourself. even if that means you won't live at all."

this is Sonic's self-destructive behavior.

rather than focusing on one goal, Sonic focuses on all of them ( to varying degrees, cuz the writer's don't know what they're doing ) at expense of his own. yes, he wants Green Hill to come back, but it's more of for his friends ( Shadow included ) than for himself.

at first, he misses Green Hill. he really wants to go home. but by s3, it's more or less him just wanting Green Hill to exist again. it's like he no longer cares if he's in the picture.

and considering how Sonic was the key to everything ( due to his Prism energy ), he'd have to become a sacrifice at some point, but this confrontation is different.

for one thing, Sonic is alone.

he tries to push his friends away before talking to Nine.

he doesn't deny that he can't live with himself if he doesn't try to save everyone.

the only reason Sonic stopped was because his friends intervened.

of course, Sonic might not show all the symptoms of a suicidal person ( unless ofc, you're looking into this as deep as i am ), but that's not because he's no longer suicidal. that's not how it works. it's because right after the intervention, it's never brought up again. it's just bad writing and it's disrespectful.

but as i see Sonic as someone who's suicidal, according to the suicide prevention resource center, the symptoms are:

feeling unbearable pain

Nine's comment on how it's the "only way he can live with himself" can be seen as Sonic feeling unbearable pain from his own guilt. this can also be related to Sonic in s2 when he's in Ghost Hill for the first time.

Sonic has been going left and right trying to help everyone else in their respective Gateways that his progress on returning home slowed. especially since he didn't know Green Hill didn't have its own Gateway, but instead was destroyed.

death, or a recent fascination with death.

his sacrifice could be seen as such. especially since this was after what Nine said.

feeling hopeless, worthless, or trapped.

throughout s3, Sonic repeatedly has doubt or hopeless about himself or the situations around him. of course, the moments are fleeting, but the amount of times he does this could lead to something a suidical person would say or do.

feeling guilt, shame, or anger.

aside from his guilt, Sonic has expressed shame ( it doesn't help Shadow kept beating it into him that it was his fault every 2 seconds ) in s2-s3, and anger was prominent within s3. it was towards Nine, mostly, but it felt almost unnatural or uncharacteristic anger.

feeling like a burden to others.

Sonic had tried to isolate himself from everyone else more than once, emotionally or physically, and only stopped once his friends made it clear they weren't leaving.

changes in behavior or mood that are relevant to Sonic specifically:

recent attempt ( again, sacrifice )

withdrawing from family, friends, or community ( his repeated attempts to do things alone // isolating himself due to his guilt )

losing interest in personal appearance or hygiene ( more or less out of Sonic's control, but we've only seen him take even a little bit care of himself when he was on Dread's ship )

a recent episode of depression, emotional distress, and // or anxiety ( repeated emotional distress, having to be pulled out of the cave, shaking or fidgeting hands, etc. )

changes in eating // sleeping patterns ( again, not totally within his control, but it would affect one's mental state regardless )

becoming violent or being a victim of violence ( ...*COUGHS* sha- *COUGHS* ni- *COUGHS* )

expressing rage ( Sonic's borderline threats about Nine )

recklessness ( ... )

again, because this is never brought up after, i wouldn't be surprised if people didn't think too much into this scene beyond "oh, Nine's evil and mean".

purely from a writer's perspective, i don't think Sonic Prime is a good show. it's what i consider a "junk food show". something to laugh at for its quality. but i don't consider it a good show.

so, i'm not surprised that Sonic's suicidal behavior or the talk about Sonic's mindset isn't brought up again, but it is still disappointing and offensive to those who struggled or continue to struggle with suicidal ideation or acts.

this is probably the only official Sonic media that has a suicidal Sonic, and they don't even treat it with respect. because of course they don't. what does it matter? Sonic's a dumb little guy anyway!

anyway, this is just my long way of saying that i see Sonic as a suicidal hero, not a self-sacrificial one ( or not only a self-sacrificial one ), and why Sonic Prime pisses me off for this reason.

it's fine to have a suicidal hero character. it brings a lot of things up for discussion.

but it's not okay to use it as a way to make your audience sad for a few minutes, then pull the rug from beneath them.

ohhhh my god hydrogen bomb of an ask okay

shadow's character was not "derailed" until the 2010s, in some cases not even then. shth did not kill shadow's character he actually stayed pretty consistent throughout the game (with a few exceptions, most of which are localization problems) and for years onwards

shadow's characterization in sonic chronicles was actually a lot of fun, a long time ago i reblogged a post that said it was awful because i had never played the game before and didn't know any better and i regret it daily because i really really like it actually

shadow's new characterization is NOT "fun in its own way" imo its literally unacceptable and so unbearable it keeps me from revisiting some things he's in

shadow has always been edgy shth didn't change literally anything about his style it just gave him a gun and let him curse

i like his writing more in sonic prime than i did in sonic x and we havent even seen him for that long in prime

i don't like that new writers try to pretend like sonic and shadow were enemies this whole time and are coming to terms with eachother because they literally were not enemies before they changed everything. i think it ties somewhat into the new notion of shadow not having any friends because its kind of hard to have a deathmatch rivalry with a guy you have mutual friends with but i don't like it i don't really think its cute or funny it's just a kick in the teeth to people who cared enough about these characters before they went wacko bizarro twilight zone mode with everything to know that somethings off

i don't really like when people assert that shadow was all polite and calm before shth like in sa2 theres the part where he realizes rouge is trapped and runs back to rescue her, but before he has his flashback his intial reaction is to laugh and keep walking

he was better when humphrey voiced him. i know that means less than nothing coming from the guy who is REALLY normal about david humphrey but he just did his emotions and cadances better idk

i don't like when either official media or fan media gives him weird "but thats my family" feelings about the black arms. probably mostly out of projection (i think its badass that he just kills them like its NOTHING) but they weren't even family to him in the shth endings where he sides with them. black doom sort of acts like that but thats solely because he's attempting to foster a sense of belonging in shadow to further isolate him and continue radicalizing him. why are we acting like its noble or angsty somehow

this place will become your tomb is a deceptively seductive album which hides its grief in the core of its tracks. take a track like “descending,” for example. sonically, it is akin to tracks like the weeknd’s “the hills” with a descending baseline and cool trap beat. seductive, sexy, and evokes the smoky veneer of a cool and collected man— detached, objective.

lyrically, it reveals a man desperate to understand and be understood, “i asked, and you answered, but you eat your words in frame. at last discovered, you can’t recall my name… i’ve been left no choice, don’t you see that?” the song vacillates wildly between the objective, smoky veneer of the man vessel is projecting, and the true, raw, and desperate person seeking fair and honest connection behind the mask (no pun intended).

even songs that are more overt in their sexual inclinations such as “like that,” with the piercing, languid bass line that acts as anchor to lead the listener further down sleep token’s seduction, is riddled with the desperation of a man asking his affective object what, if anything, will get them to stay. what, if anything that he does, do you like? do you like how he “fall[s] into your eyes like a grave?” how he’s so desperate for your attention that the mere mention of your name is enough to “bury him to the sound of [it]?” do you like that? his pleading desperation for your presence? will that convince you to love him?

it’s clear that, at the core of this album, is a man still grappling with both his fear of rejection and the bliss of loving something or someone truthfully. i mentioned earlier that “descending” vacillates wildly between the cool veneer and the raw emotional core of vessel’s relationship to his affective object, but that is also the case for the whole album.

i don’t think it’s mere coincidence that after every “sexy” track on the album, it is immediately followed by a song that is painfully honest about the need to connect. for example, “descending” is followed by “telomeres”— the closest to a pure love song out of sleep token’s discography. “like that” is followed by “the love you want”— a gut-wrenching reminder to his affective object that, no matter what, he will still hold onto the love they seek from everyone else but him. for evermore.

it is even bookended by two of the most emotional songs from sleep token’s discography, “atlantic” and “missing limbs,” tracks that are both about the overwhelming weight of grief and loss, with the former likening it to drowning in ocean water, and the latter likening it to a literal loss of a part of one’s own body.

mimicking a conversation with himself, vessel goes back and forth between tracks in an attempt to mask the desperate heartache he feels with a thin veneer of seduction. however, like sleep token has always said, the veneer cannot last forever and, eventually, it recedes back to reveal the painful, honest truth. that, at the core of this album’s seductiveness, no matter how well it slips on the mask of detached sexiness— donning it like a lover’s arm draped over a shoulder, stands a man who is, like so many of us, desperate for love and intimacy.

“Franz Schubert the composer said ‘there’s no such thing as happy music’. I always got a kick out of that. Not because I think that music has to be sad but because I think when it most effective there’s an element of it operating within a spectrum that has neither ‘happy’ or 'sad’ at either end of it. Music with lyrics in a language you don’t understand or no lyrics at all has the power to send vehement shivers through your body. If I ever thought about it at all I’m sure I used to think the melody was the vessel that carried the lyrics but more recently it has occurred to me that the opposite is often true. The problem with the neon sign analogy is that neon signs are invariably bolted to the wall and full of gas. Melody seems as though its poured rather than sprayed and doesn’t feel as though whatever holds it ought to be fixed to anything. I sometimes imagine each word to be made using a three dimensional open-top glass alphabet. Each letter built to harness and transport the mirror ball liquid marble of the melody. When the 'substance’ fills up the syllables they seem to shimmer and become weightless. With the addition of close harmony I see colours swirl together, parts of the lyrics glow and the way in which they float suggests that something like the 'star gate’ sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey is happening deep inside them out of view.” (x)

Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 57: Can't eat favourite food

Welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80s or ‘90s syndicated cartoon! We’re getting close to the end of the series now, so what classic cartoon trope are we looking at today?

Episode 57: Can't eat favourite food

Ahh, okay. I feel like this one’s a little less common in mainstream media, to be honest. When it does show up, it’s often used to signal to either the audience or the other characters that there’s something seriously wrong with that character. They could be sick, or under the effects of a curse or spell, or could even be a villain disguised as the main character.

That being said, I can think of two instances when Sonic couldn’t stomach the idea of eating his trademark favourite food (and one instance when everyone else couldn’t stomach it either), and none of them were used to hint that there was something wrong with Sonic. In fact, our first instance went in the exact opposite direction. That would be when Sonic and Tails wound up in Sandblast City in issues #62 and 63. I’ll be covering this one in a bit more detail in an upcoming episode, but the long story short is that Sonic and Tails found themselves in a city full of people who idolised Sonic for defeating Robotnik, and were hoping to trick him into staying with them full time to fight the constant robot attacks on their city. How did they go about trying to convince Sonic to stay?

By pampering him with around the clock massages and chilli dogs, of course!

At first Sonic seemed thrilled at all the attention he was getting, while Tails was eager to just leave Sandblast City and get back to their mission of hunting down the evil wizard Ixis Naugus. However at some point Sonic realised that he was being played, but kept up the charade so that the Sandblasters wouldn’t figure out that he was on to them.

When even Sonic the Hedgehog thinks he’s had too many chilli dogs, that’s when you know you’ve crossed a line.

An earlier instance of Sonic not being able to stomach the idea of eating chilli dogs happened way back in issue #11.

This extremely trippy story once again saw Sonic gorge himself on too many chilli dogs, and this time it caused him to have a bad dream.

Like, really bad.

When Sonic awoke he solemnly vowed to eat more responsibly.

…that vow lasted all of thirty seconds. xD

I’m reluctant to bring up this last story again, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t. You may remember in a previous episode that I discussed how Sonic #33 is an issue that lives in infamy, and its plot kicks off once again because of chilli dogs.

Yup, the Freedom Fighters were so sick of chilli dogs that they fell for the most obvious trap ever. Seriously, Team Rocket had traps that were more subtle, and the Freedom Fighters still fell for this. That said, I would like to acknowledge that this comic was decades ahead of its time, showing both the importance of wearing masks to help prevent spreading disease (although Rotor really ought to be wearing a mask too) and the dangers of ordering from fast food delivery companies like Doordash and Uber Eats. 😛

Now if Tails or Rotor had been spared from the French Fryrus, they probably would have gotten to work trying to synthesise a vaccine. Sonic isn’t really brainy enough to do that, so he settled for the next best thing:

Yup, shrinking himself down to a size small enough to run down Rotor’s throat and try to punch the virus into submission. And it was here that he met…

…I can’t. I can’t with this stupid issue, I just can’t. 😛 The puns by themselves are bad enough, but the idea of all the Freedom Fighters’ immune systems being sentient creatures who just couldn’t be bothered fighting this disease annoys me.

Anyway, Sonic was able to fight off the grunts easily enough, but struggled a bit more when he got to the boss fights, Paris-site (sigh) and Fever.

Fortunately for him, Rotor’s (SIGH) Auntie Bodies was inspired to take up the fight again.

She also called her counterparts in the other Freedom Fighters and told them to get off their lazy butts and do their jobs too.

So in the end the day was saved, and Sonic gave everyone the perfect food for when you’re sick:

Well, close enough.

Feel like you're taking 06's unfinished mocappedness over actual characterizing, though fans do the exact same in overly making him seem noble just cuz of taking the last scene OOC, and ignoring everything else

-He curtly tells Rouge he simply was rescuing her, which, kinda rude/blunt

-Mephiles he immediately calls BS

-Sonic he pushes back at the "don't be late" comment

-While he could've joined the others in simply going back to the present after Iblis, he remained out of his own volition of finding out WTF Mephiles is

-Silver he kicks and calls him misguided, rather than be proactive

Shadow isn't really misled or acting out of confusion/vengeance unlike earlier games in 06. It's a culmination of past char dev, along with different circumstance. So he doesn't have much to rib off of

Even then, in game there are a lot of quotes showing his ego. My fav is "Hah! There's no strength in numbers!" When he encounters hordes of enemies in later stages/Hard mode. The scrapped audio of him and Sonic having an Extra mode highlights more his attitude, though not to exaggerated levels like what the fandom does

And then Rivals 1/2, games literally written by Iizuka, was released a couple days later, and he very much is combatitive there to other chars interferring. He's not "softened" or "edged up", he's a very tempermental char depending on context/char interaction. Shadow's ego is very much "tell and show", so if nothing needs to be shown, he won't say as he's generally a reserved person

Later games are similar in that he doesn't have much to go off of in char chemistry for being "bratty", contrary to what fandom says. I'd argue the only bad use of him is Free Riders, cuz he legitimately has no reason or drive to participate in that contest

TLDR: I find fandom stupid, but I find your dismissal of 06 Shadow to fall in the same trap, for different reasons

My bad, I forgot '06 implied Shadow has an IQ of 200. xP

While I get what you're saying, my objections are more that fans call '06!Shadow peak Shadow without considering the fact that '06!Shadow looks like he's dissociating in half his scenes... Even more than the game where he's actively suffering PTSD flashbacks.

In addition, '06's canon status begs questions of just how much weight we ought to be giving it, when other games have largely tackled the same subject matter. We knew that Shadow will fight the world if necessary, since you have the choice to fight the entire world in ShTH.

I honestly don't know what '06 could say about his character that hasn't already been said. Because it seems to me the game offers more insight into Rouge and Omega's views on Shadow than Shadow's views on them, you know what I mean?

Rouge confirms her loyalty towards him and Shadow just stands there. It's not like in Battle where he begrudgingly calls her ally, or SA2 where Rouge's goading compels him to justify himself with "I came back for the Chaos Emeralds."

To say nothing of how the "I'd choose you over the world" sentiment loses a little of its luster when you realize it's not limited to just Rouge in her attempt to make Shadow feel better; Amy and Elise say it to or regarding Sonic as well. So it's not even particularly unique to Rouge and Shadow's relationship in this game anyhow. Compare these scenes. There's no real back-and-forth.

You also read the post where I said I feel the only thing Maekawa seems to think to do with Shadow is stuff him in a capsule, right? I don't really give its inclusion in '06 quarter for being an old game because A.) if folks are calling this portrayal peak, then I'm going to hold it to a fairly high standard, and B.) it's a recycling of the same plot we've seen over and over again, and suffers the same pitfalls of reducing Shadow to a plot device. We already had an evil "mastermind" try to manipulate him in the previous game.

'06 saying "Shadow won't fall for the chessmaster's tricks" is kind of a redundant point to make twice. Mephiles attempts to mess with his head a la Black Doom, but even that conflict falls flat if Shadow doesn't at least buy into it a little.

I've read analyses of '06 Shadow before. Half the scenes people analyze consist of him staring blankly into space. And I get the point they're trying to make, but it's hard for me to overlook the fact that, compared to other iterations, '06!Shadow has no real discernible personality. It's not like in SA2 where he's simply quiet; he's inscrutable in a way that makes him seem dead inside.

He has the exact same look on his face as when he kicks Silver in the head as when Mephiles drops the bombshell on him that the world will turn against him as when he's staring at Rouge's boobs. And I'm not sure if calling this Shadow peak over all over iterations is any better than the accusations that Pontaff-era!Shadow is an edgelord. Because it's like okay I guess, you can overlook Shadow appearing to have no affectation at all, but don't like it when he displays personality in other games?

I wasn't contesting that, lol. xP When I say Shadow's an asshole, bear in mind I'm not saying that's the only thing he can be, of course. I know he is also reserved and isn't always "fight me" depending on the context. But at the same time, I feel like folks don't like to acknowledge that he does have rough edges and a sometimes unlikable temperament.

1) It’s not fair to say something like “this is one of the best Sonic games ever” when you haven’t played the actual game. Story and presentation are important, but will always come second to the core gameplay in a platformer.

3) Here’s why I think Secret Rings is the worst Sonic game:

When rating games in a big franchise like this to determine which one is the best or the worst, I consider two thing: quality and scale.

Quality is self explanatory. How good is the finished product? Is it fun to play, are the mechanics well thought out, is the story good, yadda yadda. This is how most games are analyzed and reviewed.

Scale is a bit trickier. What was the game trying to achieve, and how well did it go about achieving it? What kind of impact did it leave on the series as a whole? Is it a big, 40 hour console game, or just a fun little mobile game to waste time with?

That second one is why I scoff at people saying stuff like “Sonic Labyrinth is the worst Sonic game!” “Sonic Jam on game.com is the worst Sonic game!” “Sonic Schoolhouse is the worst Sonic game!” In isolation, these games certainly don’t hold a candle to 90% of what this series has put out, but at the same time, they were never trying to compete with them. It’s obvious that games like these aren’t trying to be anything more than what they are: low budget side games there to turn an extra buck for Sega. They are filler. They don’t count.

(Granted, there is some gray area as to what “scale” can entail. Games like Chronicles and Free Riders can fall on either side of the argument, but for the purposes of this post, it’s not all that important to get into)

With all that in mind, the worst games in any given franchise are the ones that promise the biggest scale but have the worst quality. They’re not just bad, they’re disappointing.

I’m sure that you’re thinking “by that criteria, 06 is the worst Sonic game.” And yeah, you’re right! But there’s a silver lining to it.

It’s no secret that 06 had a rough development. Like, “it’s a miracle this got out at all” rough. While Sega rushing the game for Christmas was definitely the final nail in the coffin, the two biggest factors in the game’s failure are as follows:

Yuji Naka, the game’s director, leaving halfway through production. In a post Balan society it’s easy to say that this was a good thing, but it’s difficult for any project to bounce back after losing its director, let alone a game of 06’s scale.

The development team splitting in half to make, you guessed it, Secret Rings.

Having played through a decent bit of the Project 06 mod and cross referencing it with vanilla 06 on my 360 (which I’m astonished hasn’t red ringed yet), I’ve realized that Sonic 06 does have some good ideas trapped deep inside its messy, messy code. The level design really isn’t that bad. The mach speed sections are great when you can actually control your jump. The more I play Project 06, the more I think to myself…what if Sonic 06 had more development time? Or better yet, what if Sonic 06 had more developers that weren’t forced to work on another project?

Basically, I blame Secret Rings for a lot of the issues with 06. There’s an argument to be made that that’s not really fair to Secret Rings, and sure, it’s fine if you think that, but I hold to my opinion for a few reasons.

Secret Rings has had virtually no impact on the series otherwise. This applies to Black Knight as well, but Black Knight has better music, marginally better gameplay, and didn’t cause another game to suffer by eating up development resources. At least 06 gave us Silver (even if @spiritsonic is the one who made him good).

Even on its own, Secret Rings is not a good game. Controlling Sonic with the Wii remote feels incredibly awkward and I don’t think any amount of fine tuning would’ve fixed that, especially not for a game of its era. The fact that you’re on rails leads to level design that blurs together in your head, so nothing ever stands out. The missions are all monotonous and tedious, so you rarely ever feel like you’re pushing the story forward through the gameplay, which is essential for a video game with any semblance of plot.

I don’t feel guilty for pinning 06’s failure on Secret Rings. Truly, it can not be overstated how much of a negative impact 06 had on this series—you still get gaming journalists who go “remember when Sonic kissed some real woman?”—and if Secret Rings hadn’t existed, if Sega just held off on releasing something early in the Wii’s lifespan and relied on Sonic Rush to reel in Nintendo gamers, things might have been a whole lot different. Since Secret Rings doesn’t really have a legacy of its own, whenever I look at it, I just think to myself, “they cut Sonic 06’s development team in half for this?”

The Chao Garden On Earth

During exploring a cave on the beach, Tails brought a little scanner so he can analyze everything and learn more about his new homes geology. Whilst checking the data when he gets home he finds something very interesting. There’s a signal he picked up that is identical to one he has studied on his home planet. The data wasn’t very clear due to the distance he had yet to travel within the cave.

When he brought this up to his brothers they were all very eager to go back and investigate this signal.

- - -

The 3 return to the cave. “Y’know, I thought I heard something the last time we were here. They sounded like little voices. I thought I was hearin stuff!” Sonic reveals, checking the depth of the little water stream heading through the cave. It’s just a little deeper. Knuckles looks at him “I believe I heard that sound too. But I only thought it was Tails’ voice echoing through the tunnel.” “Why didn’t I hear it??” Tails complains, confused because he has the best hearing out of all of them. Sonic places a hand on his lil shoulder “because you were distracted with something else. It’s easy to miss sounds when you’re so focused on something else.” Tails sighs “I wish I coulda heard it.”

Heading into the cave, Tails takes them to where he picked up the first signal. “It leads to.. here!” Tails announces “but the source is still a little far.. and the only way to it is through this little crevice.” Tails kneels down to examine it “I think I could fit in there, but I would run the risk of getting trapped..” he mumbles to himself before being shoved out of the way by Knuckles, who is cracking his knuckles in preparation for some good ol rock reformation.

Knuckles punches through the tunnel making it big enough for the three of them. Sonic and Tails blink and look at each other. “Well.. that solves that concern.” Sonic chuckles nervously.

The three adventure further into the cave, when something catches Knuckles’ eye “Brothers! Look, there is light over there!” The other two follow his pointing and spot what he is seeing. They rush over, the little sounds of voices becoming clearer and clearer. They slip through another hole and-

S: What..

T: On E-

K: EARTH??

Before them was a Chao garden, Chao happily playing in flowers and streams of water coming from the cave. Some were sleeping, eating, cuddling, and a little blue one comes up to happily greet the newcomers.

“What.. are you?” Sonic says, now holding a chao. “It’s a chao garden!! But how??” Tails is struggling to understand. “I haven’t seen a healthy chao colony like this in so long!” Knuckles notes, now with a big smile on his face. He was a little homesick, but now knowing these lil guys are here helps him a ton. Sonic looks confused. He was very young when he left his home planet, he never met or knew about chao. “Sonic, these are called Chao. There are plenty of Chao gardens on our home planet, but.. I never thought we’d find any on Earth!” Tails says patting the little Chao in Sonics arms. “This spot must be very plentiful in resources and very clean.. we must keep this place a secret.” Knuckles remarked. The other two nod in agreement. They’re already aware of what humanity is capable of and don’t want to think about what could happen. “Chao!!” The Chao in Sonics arms calls over its little buddies and thus begins a playtime that lasts until the sun begins to set.

“We should come back soon. Like. Really soon.” Sonic is covered in Chao. They adore him. “Yeah!” “Of course.” Tails and Knuckles agree, in the same situation.

Supposedly there's an interview that states that Shadow remembers Sonic 06(though I can't find it), Blaze might remember depending on how you take Generations and Elise had the same deja vu as Sonic at the end of the game so she might remember to the same degree he does now.

Although apparently a writer has said that no one remembers that game and Sonic referencing it in TSR is an inconsistency? So either Silver's closest friends in the past know and he doesn't or everyone only has deja vu feelings of 06's events. It's a mess and my research only leaves me more confused.

I think at this point we might need to accept that '06's plot is inherently unclear and messy and its paradoxes and ambiguities all but hang together with duct tape and prayers. Not even stuff that has to do with the ending of the game when the events get erased where they still don't know what the actual consequences are; also things like Elise having the blue Chaos Emerald for 10 years of her life despite the fact it got used in prior games no issue, or Blaze being introduced in Sonic Rush yet no-one recognising or interacting with her to the point it's a common fan theory she's a fragment of Silver's imagination. It also doesn't help that I figure the theories, interviews, and references from official channels are written by different people who have different views and knowledges, and thus what they say could directly contradict what someone else said earlier. It's an all-together chaos, and I think we'll never be able to get a definite answer, because any answer they could come up with other than "we might have completely fucked up here timeline- and canonicity-wise" is probably just going to open up more gaps and confusions.

How I myself see it is that Sonic vaguely remembers and Elise does too (perhaps because they were closest to the flame of Solaris when it got blown out or something, I don't now), and no-one else recalls things other than the occasional sense of deja vu like in Colours DS with Silver and Blaze. Maybe Blaze remembered in Generations because White Space already had interesting timey-wimey stuff going on, since Crisis City should never have been brought there in the first place since it never got created. Or perhaps the fact Crisis City is there means that there is a universe where The End Of The World by Mephiles never happened, which would allow for ESP Silver to exist too. But for me, the mobile games are not really canon to the mainline games; they often have a lot of oddities going on with characters that should not exist or who are dead being brought in (I believe Runners once had Erazor Djinn show up... dude is trapped in a lamp at the bottom of a pool of lava. And Mephiles is in both Runners and Speed Battle as well, despite the fact he probably never existed in the first place now), which is because they can. People like seeing these characters, so of course the mobile games are going to cash on that! But for me, such contradictions and inconsistencies makes their overall bearing on what is actually canon to the mainline games rather low. But I do love taking details from and writing stories about stuff the non-canon games introduce!

Gale Reviews: Sonic Prime: Episode 1 Shattered

(Spoilers if you havent watched it)

-Sonic is running late to an eggman fight.

-So I really like Big’s voice. It fits him

-Sonics little intro is great.

-Shadow is mentioned and is like “We... will get to him later”

-So I love all the character designs. I like how Rouge is style. (I think the update is a welcome change)

-I am not crazy about knuckles voice. I prefered Travis Willinghams in Sonic boom. But I adore Amy’s it fits so well

-The quick banter between each one shows the dynamic he has with the team,

-Sonic is into amy, They are so flirting

-Sonic didnt listen and shattered the prism

-I do wish they didnt do this out of order but... its like a mystery.

-Okay so the fight animation is so fluid, really sells Sonics speed.

This was the month of dub and soundsystems. This entire episode was heavily inspired by Edward George, and specifically his radio show The Strangeness of Dub. I was fascinated by George’s explorations of dub not only historically, but also socially and spiritually. I had never thought about dub as a queer genre, but there is an inherent strangeness in the genre, one which was developed on the B-side. Dub’s existence as a variant, with all its versions, instrumentals, and experimentations in sound, could even be considered a glitch. That is, dub exists only in relation to the “normal” version of the track, that is, until it eventually went on to influence the entirety of electronic music, specifically through remixes, bass, and exploration of effects such as reverb and delay.

Tying it further to the current moment and what’s been on my mind lately, I began thinking of dub and Jamaican music in general as a framework for a collectivist music future. I was very interested in the utility of the music as a gathering opportunity, where music was made for the physical soundsystems that would serve as the centerpiece for community events. The idea of originality was different too—copyright laws were not a factor in the creation of Jamaican music, and artists would often iterate and create versions of an established, popular riddim. To consider originality in this way was refreshing and honest; the notion of copying, bootlegging, sampling, etc. is a big part of my own practice, and I’m generally much more suspicious of people who treat music as some sort of competition, as something to be protected or gatekept. I find beauty in the listener taking an existing work and “customizing” it for their own experience. That, to me, is art succeeding.

This fascination in Jamaican soundsystem culture also ignited even more interest in building up my record collection, so I spent a lot of my time this month digging for 45”s from 1970s-1980s Jamaica. The first half of this mix is a selection of some of the records I’ve collected interspersed with other reggae/dub tracks that I enjoyed but don’t own. The back half is other music I’ve been listening to in typical tripreport fashion, but all tracks that I feel to have a through line connection with dub, whether that be sonically, conceptually, or spiritually. It’s pretty much all contemporary music from the 90s onwards, spanning hip-hop, R&B, house, afrobeats, bass, dubstep, grime, trap, techno, jungle, ghettotech, footwork, and dnb.

It being Black History Month, I was lucky enough to hear some great music live in-person as well, including a deep dive from Edward George at NYU on the connection between Billy Strayhorn, and the interlinked histories of jazz, dub, and subsequently all modern electronic music. That put me on a big jazz kick too, listening to a lot of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. As part of Dweller, I attended the dub and jungle nights and got to see performances from Liv.e, Embaci, Edward George, Tim Reaper, and Kush Jones. That night resulted in several of the tracks that I’ve included in this episode. Outside of that, I also got to see Sully and Anz at Nowadays Nonstop and also got back in my indie bag and last minute saw Mitski at the Beacon Theatre on the UWS.

Overall, it was fun that this episode was more of a deep dive in a specific genre in addition to what the tripreport format has tended to become since I’ve started DJing. Tying it to my personal life, I think that dub has really helped me slow down. If I had a New Years Resolution, it would be to take life slower in 2024. It’s difficult for me to take time to myself, or at least time to relax. Since getting back into dub, getting sick, and consequently getting back into smoking weed, I feel like I had a hard reset and some kind of return to form. For pretty much all of this year up until right now, I’ve been staying sober, running a ton, trying to be “normal” to cope with the grief. To be honest, though, that month was one of the trippiest months of my life. I feel a lot more grounded since taking a week off running and socializing and since starting to smoke weed again. It helped too that I was working from home for most of this month. It feels counterintuitive, but I’m going to trust my body.

The day before I released this episode, we had the best weather of the year. I went for an incredibly long walk and listened to music and got an ice cream cone. It was really nice to have a glimpse of the spring. It quickly went back to being terrible and stormed/was cloudy all the rest of the week, but we finally got to Daylight Savings Time ending as I write this and it already feels like a shift that the sun is still out when I get off work. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m trying to trust the natural rhythm of life and go with the flow. The strangeness of dub.

had a doctor who dream last night. tenth doctor. i think martha was there but i don’t remember? there were a few segments but i mostly just remember one

the doctor heard someone call for him in an alleyway. he followed the voice until he realized it was coming from this,,,,, idk this electronic prison type of thing?? like someone was trapped in an electronic thing in the ground

he tried to unlock it with his sonic screwdriver but it wouldn’t work, and instead every attempt to unlock the prison made it even more secure. somehow, and idk how, it was like. the lock or whatever had a soul???? and its soul was taken from it????? and that made it hella secure????? idk man it made sense in dream logic

the doctor said that if she could find a replacement soul for the lock he could unlock it, so without hesitation she found a fellow prisoner and killed them for their soul, and the doctor realized maybe she was in this prison for a reason

so now he’s left with a choice. either free her and potentially let something horrid out into the world, or let her stay there just in case, even if she might be innocent

idk what the tenth doctor would do in this situation but in my dream he made the prison extra secure and left her there, and as he walked away he could hear her screaming to let her out

so yeah. pleasant dreams all around /s

Sonic Dimensions: Chapter 10 - Battle With Eris

yes, this series still exists. i haven't been updating as much because my college started and i've been busy.

also yes amy gets a super form because i don't care what sega says, she needs a super form.

i envisioned serena's super form to be a whole magical girl transformation.

The group flew down to where Eris was causing damage. Already, she had wreaked a lot of havoc. Roads were cracked and people were running, not knowing what to do. “You may have powered up but you’ll never defeat me!” Eris claimed. She summoned white circles of light and hurled it at the trio. They jumped out of the way. Blaze used her pyrokinesis and was able to land a hit on Eris. “Wow, she really did power us up!” Sonic said. “Alright then! This is for invading my island!” Knuckles charged forward and tried to land a hit on Eris like Blaze did. This time, she dodged it. Knuckles flew, trying to land a few punches on Eris. He finally succeeded and sent her flying a little way. “Knux remember, we shouldn’t hurt her too badly,” Sonic reminded him. “Alright alright,” Knuckles groaned. “Everyone, lets do this!” Sonic exclaimed.

The group rushed at Eris. “Hey Eris, I understand your pain but don’t you think destroying everything is a bit too much?” Sonic asked. Eris summoned blue spears and threw them at Sonic. He dodged every one of them. “There’s innocent people caught in your anger,” Tails said. “They never did anything to you. Don’t you think its unfair?” Eris shot fire at him, which he avoided. “I understand punching things releases anger, but you can’t hurt innocent people Eris,” Knuckles said. Eris used the bricks from one of the demolished buildings to throw at Knuckles. He dodged it. “I know how much you’ve suffered. But doing all this isn’t gonna help. You’ll just get more and more angry. Its an endless cycle,” Amy said. Eris threw more rocks at Amy. She summoned her hammer and swung them away. “I know that people have wronged you,” Blaze said. “But those people aren’t here. Hurting them isn’t going to solve anything.” Eris shot water at her, which Blaze moved away from. “E-E-Eris…. I’ve b-been hurt too,” Serena said. “M-Maybe not to th-the same extent as you…. B-but there are people…. Who h-have wronged me. B-But I never w-wanted revenge on them. I may hae g-gotten angry b-but I’d never hurt anyone else j-just because I was hurt. I…. AAAAHHHH!” Serena dodged a large rock just in time. “Serena, you alright?” Blaze asked. “Yeah… th-that was close.” “Stop…… TALKING!!” Eris yelled. “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF ALL OF YOU!”

She raised her hand and thunder struck down on it. She directed it to the group. Everyone got out of the way. “Just… let…. Me…. DESTROY YOU!!” Eris yelled again. She directed a barrage of lightning strikes against the group. Blaze was hit by one of them, and she fell down. “No! Y-Your highness!” Serena rushed down to get Blaze. She was unconscious and had lost the green glow Hecate had given her. “Y-Your highness, please wake up!” There was no response. “Y-your highness! BLAAAAAZE!” She rushed down, flying like she never did before and caught up to Blaze. She caught her and flew up. Blaze opened her eyes, being bathed in the green glow again. “S-Serena…” she whispered. Her cheeks had a slight flush of red “Blaze, are you alright?” Amy asked. “Yeah…. But, that was the first time I heard Serena call my name.” “O-Oh no! I-I-I’m sorry, y-your high-” “No, please, call me Blaze.” Serena smiled. “O-Okay, Blaze.”

“Save all that for later,” Sonic said. “Right now, we’ve got to stop Eris.” "That's right!" Blaze said. "Lets all go together!" Eris shot another big lightning strike at the group. They all went in different directions. Sonic did a spin dash on her, throwing her forward. But Eris recovered in a short while. She then engaged in a fistfight with Sonic. Amy broke it away by using a tornado hammer. With Eris shocked for a while, Blaze trapped her in a flame ball. Eris broke out of it and hurled a water attack at Blaze. Serena dashed in front of Blaze and caught it with her hand. She then threw it back at Eris.

“Eris, we don’t want to hurt you!” Blaze said. “But you just need to listen to us!” Eris did not listen. She kept attacking the group. “Eris, Hecate would not want you to use your power like this!” Blaze yelled. Eris stopped for a while. Then she became really angry. “WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HECATE?!” she screamed. “YOU NEVER KNEW HER! DON’T TELL ME WHAT SHE WOULD AND WOULDN’T WANT, YOU SPOILED PRINCESS!” “We’re not lying, Eris!” Sonic said. “Hecate told us she didn’t want this!” “What?” “Its true! She was the one who gave us this power in the first place. So would you just listen?!” Knuckles asked. “Then she too has betrayed me…” Eris said softly. “Eris, that’s not-” Amy began. “So this is how it is, huh?” Eris laughed bitterly. “My only friend ended up betraying me. She wanted me to be defeated!” “Th-That’s n-not what she wanted, Eris!” Serena tried to calm her down. “In the end, I have no one. So what’s the point of living? I’ll just destroy everything!”

Her rings glowed, giving her more power. A massive wave of energy burst from them, pushing the group back. Eris began destroying random buildings, creating cracks in the road, summoning thunder to set things on fire. The group tried to get near her but she was just too powerful. The invisible wave of energy pushed them back. “That’s right! I’ll destroy everything! Everything! Past, present, future, across dimensions! I’ll just destroy them all! Then the pain will go away!” Eris cackled. “If I destroy everything, then everyone will feel my pain! I won’t be the only one suffering! Ahaha! Ahahahahahaha!” “Eris, stop this madness now!” Sonic demanded. “And you…” she turned her gaze to Blaze and Serena. “The little Imperial Princess of the Sol dimension and her little butterfly friend… I’ll make sure you suffer the most! Ahahahahaha!” She threw a barrage of lightning bolts around them. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy helped get them to safety. “Ahahahaha! This is fun, isn’t it?! Watching all of them run away like this! Yes, now you know how I feel! Ahahahaha! Ahahahaha ha… ha….” Eris stopped her rampage for a while. “What is this…. For some reason taking my anger on these people isn’t helping me feel better, its making me angrier. What…. What is happening?” “Eris..” Amy began. “Revenge is only self destructive. Its going to leave you wanting to inflict more pain. You’ll never be satisfied.” “No… no you’re wrong! You’re all WRONG!” Eris squealed. “I’ll just destroy the entire universe! If nothing exists that I won’t be suffering anymore!” She flew upwards.

“Wh-Where’s she going?” Serena asked. Realization dawned upon Knuckles. “She’s going to Angel Island to draw more power from the Master Emerald!” Knuckles exclaimed. “Come on, we have to follow her!” The group followed her to Angel Island. Eris tried to get on top of the Master Emerald again. “Oh no you don’t!” Knuckles exclaimed. They got into a fistfight which ended with Eris shoving Knuckles and continuing her way to the Master Emerald. “We can’t let her get to it! Come on!” Sonic exclaimed. The group chased her again. “Why can’t you all stop bothering me?!” Eris shouted. “We’re not gonna stop until you listen to us!” Amy replied. “You guys don’t have anything worthwhile to say so get out of my way!” Eris exclaimed. “Everyone!” a voice said to them. “You cannot let her get to the Master Emerald. Use your combined power to bring her back to normal!” “Its Hecate!” Sonic said. “Guys, I have an idea!” Tails said. “Let Eris go to the top of the Master Emerald!” “What?! Are you crazy?!” Knuckles retorted. “Knuckles, just trust me! Let Eris go to the top and once she’s there, we’ll use our combined power!” “This had better work!” Knuckles exclaimed.

So they let Eris get on top of the Master Emerald. Then on Tails’ call, they surrounded her. “You’re all too late!” she exclaimed. “I’ll drain every last bit of power from this gem, then me and Eggman can be the only ones in this universe!” “You really trust that guy?!” Sonic asked. “How could I not? He helped me. Right now he’s my only friend!” Sonic stifled a laugh. “Yeah right!” he said. “Eggman is no one’s friend. But we’re not here to talk about that! We’re going to stop you, Eris, once and for all!” “And just how are you going to do that?” Eris asked. The auras around the group began to intensify. They each shot a green beam from their hands which hit Eris. “Ugh… unghhh…. This…. This is NOTHING! I…. I still have power!” She tried to draw more energy from the Master Emerald while simultaneously holding off the group’s attack. She found it was difficult. “You…. You won’t get me….” she grunted. “I will….. Recover!” She used all her energy to hold back the group’s power. “I won’t…. Be defeated…. I won’t….” Eventually she got too tired. The beams engulfed her as she screamed.

Eris fell back down, now in her normal state. The rest of the group also returned to their normal forms and went to check on Eris. Serena went close to her and held out her hand. Eris slapped it away. “I… I don’t need your help!” she exclaimed. “I will overcome this! I will defeat you! I just need Eggman to…” There was a whirring sound. The group looked up. It was Eggman in a robot very much like the Death Egg robot. It was powered by the Master Emerald energy Eris gave Eggman along with some of her magic. This robot was gigantic. It had the green aura of Master Emerald energy as well as the black aura of Eris’ magic. It resembled Eggman himself. Fitted to its back were missiles. “There he is!” Eris exclaimed. She got up and ran towards him. “Doctor! I’m here! Please, help me!” Laughter boomed from inside the robot. “Help you? You had your magic and the Master Emerald power with you and you were still defeated by Sonic! Tell me, what use are you to me now?” Eris was shocked. “I…. I still have my magic! I can still help, I promise, I…. please, we’re friends, right?!” More laughter, this time much louder. “Aww, did you really think we were friends?” “Y-Yes. You… you helped me, so we’re-” “I only helped you to further my own means. Now you’re of no use to me.” “I…. this… this isn’t fair! You promised to help me you… you…!” Eris ran forward before Sonic and co could stop her. She put her hand to the ground and made a vine grow that took her straight to the head of the robot. But before it could fully reach, Eggman caught her. “Eris!” Serena screamed. “What a pitiful girl you are!” Eggman said. “Your sister abandoned you, your sorceress friend gave Sonic the powers to defeat you, even your own parents didn’t love you! And your kingdom didn’t respect you either. What kind of a princess are you?” “I…” “Seeing how things turned out I’m not surprised. Maybe everyone was right about you. You really are good for nothing.” Saying this, Eggman threw Eris down.

“Eris!” Sonic shouted. Without thinking, Seren jumped down and raced towards Eris. She caught up with her and took both her hands. This time, Eris didn’t even try to fight back. She was too tired and shocked to do so. “Why…. why do you help me?” she asked. “After everything I’ve done to you and your friends?” Serena didn’t respond. She took Eris and flew right up back to Angel Island.

Once she was there, she set Eris near the Master Emerald. The others rushed to her aid. “Eris, are you okay?” Sonic asked. “Are you hurt anywhere?” Amy asked. “I don’t get it…” Eris whispered. “After everything I’ve done to hurt you all…. You help me? Why? What do you want from me?” “Nothing”, Tails said. “We just want to make sure you’re okay.” “Eggman’s awful for doing what he did,” Amy said. “And after you trusted him too.” Eris was silent for a long time.

“Is it that hard to believe people help you because they’re concerned about you?” a voice came. Two apparitions appeared, Hecate and Harmonia. “Hecate! Harmonia!” Eris said softly. “What are you…” “Oh, Eris, my child,” Hecate caressed her face. “You were never meant to go down such a destructive path.” “I….” “Eris… I have been looking for you all over… and now I finally found you!” Harmonia said. “Harmonia…. Why?” “To tell you I am sorry, sister.” “You….” Suddenly, the ground on Angel Island shook. “That can wait,” Eris said. “Right now, stopping Eggman is the priority.” She looked at Sonic. “You… blue hedgehog… you have the power of the Chaos Emeralds, don’t you?” Eris asked. “Yes I do.” “And Princess Blaze here has the Sol Emeralds.” “That’s correct.” “Then with those powers, you can stop Eggman. And there’s one more thing.” Eris removed her rings and gave them to Harmonia. “Can you turn these into the Rings of Light again?” she asked. “Of course.” Harmonia enclosed the rings within her palms and closed her eyes. There was a glow and the rings were transformed into the Rings of Light again. Eris gestured for Harmonia to give them to Serena. Harmonia did just that. “I believe those were yours, Serena,” said Eris. Serena nodded and put on the rings. “I…. I feel p-powerful again,” she said. “M-My energy is coming back.” Eris just smiled. “Those Rings can give you a form similar to the power the Chaos emeralds give Sonic, or the Sol emeralds give Blaze,” Harmonia explained. “You have to concentrate really hard and say the following words: oh rings that hold the power of light, lend me your brilliance so that I may shine!” Serena nodded. “Super Sonic and Burning Blaze can fight Eggman but they’ll need you to back them up too,” Harmonia said. “And everyone else, you can use the power of the emeralds too.” “But I’ve never gone super before,” Amy said. “There is a first time for everything” Harmonia said while smiling. “Th-That’s right. I b-believe you can do it, Amy!” Serena said. “Thanks Serena,” Amy said.

“Everyone, its time!” Sonic said. Sonic and Blaze brought out the Chaos Emeralds and Sol Emeralds. They closed their eyes. They Chaos Emeralds surrounded Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Blaze. The circled around them. Eventually, the quartet gained their super forms - Sonic his familiar yellow form, Tails being golden with flickies flying around him, Knuckles having a pink form, and Amy being rose gold. “Wow… I… I did it! I went super for the first time!” she laughed in excitement. “I feel so powerful!” Blaze did the same and became Burning Blaze. Serena looked and her and blushed. “Hey, Serena,” Harmonia said. “Serena!” “Huh? Yeah?!” “You have to transform now!” Harmonia said. “Remember what I told you.” “Um y-yeah.” Serena closed her eyes and crossed her hands as she chanted the words Harmonia told her. “Oh rings that hold the power of light, lend me your brilliance so that I may shine!” The rings glowed brighter than before and engulfed Serena in their light. Serena’s hair became longer and split in the middle. Her wings became slightly bigger. A yellow aura surrounded her.

When she was done, the others looked at her in awe. Blaze had a tiny blush. “Wow, I f-feel…. M-more powerful than before!” Serena said. “That is the power of the Rings of Light,” Hecate smiled. “Yes, you are now Shining Serena,” Harmonia said. “Everyone, go forth and put an end to this madness once and for all!” “You’ve got it Princess!” Sonic said. “Alright everyone, who’s ready for a good old fashioned beatdown!” “YEAH!” everyone exclaimed in unison. “Then lets end this now!” The group flew towards Eggman, eager to end this battle once and for all.

Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 64 - 65: Two Multi-part Finale (part 8: The lead-up to the death of pre-boot ArchieSonic)

Welcome back to my investigation of how Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog series was actually a syndicated cartoon from the 80’s and 90’s!

Well friends, it’s finally time for me to talk about the moment that changed the ArchieSonic comics forever. Almost, at least. Before I talk about the final issues of pre-boot ArchieSonic, I think a brief summary of how they got to that point is in order.

Hahahahaha! Brief! Oh, that’s rich! Let’s be honest - there was so much that happened leading up to the activation of the second Genesis Wave that it really deserves a post all of its own to catch everyone up to speed.

After the Iron Dominion was ousted from New Mobotropolis, Sonic and his friends had a bit of a respite. Well it was a respite compared to what they had recently gone through, anyway. Sonic and Sally caught up with their friend Lupe, newly crowned chieftain of the Wolf Pack Nation, and helped her negotiate a peace with a rival tribe. Bunnie was reunited with her long lost Uncle Beauregard, only to find that he’d had to join Eggman’s forces out of desperation to survive. Antoine and Bunnie finally got to go on their honeymoon courtesy of Tails and his submarine, but the happy occasion was rudely interrupted by the Battlebird Armada. Just your everyday shenanigans for the heroes of New Mobotropolis. The real problems began when Geoffrey St. John asked Sonic to help him retrieve a Chaos Emerald from the Special Zone, at which point Geoffrey left Sonic incapacitated and took the Emerald for himself.

It was then revealed that the entire time the Freedom Fighters had known him, Geoffrey had secretly been an apprentice to the wizard Ixis Naugus, who was currently an insane, drooling shell of his former self. Geoffrey used the Chaos Emerald to restore Naugus’ mind, and together they started plotting to take the throne from King Elias.

While the former King Max had been trapped in the Zone of Silence he had sworn fealty to Naugus for his own protection, so Naugus felt he had a legitimate claim to the throne. To help in his takeover, Naugus used his magic to increase the fear and mistrust the citizens of New Mobotropolis had for Nicole, who had been mind-controlled (albeit briefly) to help the Iron Queen take control of the city during the recent invasion of the Iron Dominion. When Naugus came to the city council claiming that he could protect everyone from Nicole, some of the councillors were scared enough to think he was worth listening to, as was a large chunk of the public.

Before the rightful King could be determined, Eggman launched his new Death Egg and the Freedom Fighters scrambled to try and stop him. Sonic and Sally managed to infiltrate the battleship, but Sally got gunned down while Sonic was distracted fighting a new Silver Sonic.

At this moment Eggman activated the Genesis Wave, rewriting the entire world to become an adaptation of Sonic 1 and 2 but with the Freedom Fighters along for the ride. Super Sonic was able to undo the Genesis Wave and restore the world to normal, even rewinding time enough to be able to save Sally from being BLAM-BLAM-BLAMed, but unfortunately this didn’t last. Eggman had a backup weapon ready to roboticise the entire planet and Sally sacrificed herself to destroy it, becoming a robot herself.

Things quickly got worse from there. Eggman escaped with his shiny new Mecha Sally, and Naugus was able to seize the throne. Bunnie was accidentally crystallised by Naugus when he was deflecting a laser attack on the city, and when Naugus tried to reverse the crystallisation he also accidentally removed her cyborg parts, restoring her to a fully flesh and blood rabbit. While Bunnie was initially ovejoyed, she she soon became concerned that without her bionic parts and special abitilies, she would no longer be able to be a Freedom Fighter. The city was devastated in an attack from the Battlebird Armada, with King Naugus forbidding Nicole from helping to rebuild. Geoffrey was put on trial for treason against the former King Elias and found guilty, but was officially pardoned by Naugus and continued to serve him. For the safety of his family Elias left New Mobotropolis, and while protecting his convoy the Freedom Fighters came under attack by Eggman.

Antoine valiantly saved Elias and his family from Metal Sonic but was blown up in the process. He survived but was left comatose, and Bunnie, wracked with guilt for not being able to protect him, also left the city, “To make things right.” Nicole was also overcome by guilt and grief at being unable to protect her friends, and with the citizens and the council both demanding her removal, she agreed to be exiled to Freedom HQ.

With the team at their lowest of lows and only himself, Tails and Amy remaining, Sonic dejectedly declared that the Freedom Fighters were finished. Tails and Amy weren’t going to stand for that though, and helped Sonic to not give in to his despair.

At the same time Rotor had resigned from the city council in protest of their treatment of Nicole, and so he worked with Sonic, Tails and Amy to figure out their next move. Rotor ended up staying in New Mobotropolis and becoming the leader of a new group of heroes with the mission of protecting the city: Team Freedom.

For this team Rotor recruited Big the Cat, Cream the Rabbit (and Cheese the Chao), and Heavy and Bomb, two robots that had formerly served on Geoffrey’s Secret Service team but had had to be destroyed after Eggman had captured them and reprogrammed them to take the Royal Family hostage. Meanwhile Sonic, Tails and Amy formed Team Fighters, and flew off in the Tornado to take the fight to Eggman.

Unbeknownst to Team Freedom and Team Fighters, there was a third team operating from the shadows to keep the people safe. Elias’ departure from New Mobotropolis had actually been a ruse, and he soon returned to subvert his successor’s regime. Working together with former intelligence head Harvey Who, Elias found himself the leader of an extremely unlikely group of individuals. First on the roster was Silver the Hedgehog, who was back from the future to try and prevent the end of the world (again). On a quest to root out a “traitor” that had destroyed the Freedom Fighters, Silver had accused first Sonic, then Rotor, and now on this most recent trip back in time, Antoine.

As you can see, that didn’t exactly go well. But afterwards Silver had met Harvey Who, who had offered to help him discover and prevent the real cause of the destruction of the Freedom Fighters. Leeta and Lyco of the former Wolf Pack Freedom Fighters travelled to New Mobotropolis to sign up, and former Substitute Freedom Fighter Larry Lynx the super jinx also joined, hoping to make a difference for his city after having been absent from the comics since the 1990’s (aside from a small cameo where Rotor had accidentally blown him up). But perhaps the most surprising member of this team was a newly rebuilt model of Metal Sonic - specifically, the one that had tried to murder Sonic and Tails immediately following the Sonic Adventure arc. This model had been powered by a… power gem (really creative name there, Ken Penders) that had enhanced his speed, given him the ability to repair himself, and also caused him to develop a personality. Sonic had fought this Metal Sonic atop an active volcano and tried to reason with him, telling him he could live his own life rather than being ruled by a thirst for power and vengeance. Metal Sonic had been unconvinced at first, but when Tails refused to abandon his friend despite the volcano starting to erupt, something clicked in the robot’s programming.

Metal Sonic sacrificed himself to hold back the lava flow long enough for Sonic and Tails to escape, and was reduced to a molten husk. Much later back in the present day, Uncle Chuck had gotten his hands on the power gem that still contained Metal Sonic’s personality and programming, and combined it with the parts of other previously destroyed Metal Sonics to create a new robot, Shard.

And so after all the lows and losses they’d recently experienced, things finally seemed to be looking up for the heroes.

Team Freedom worked well together, managing to save the city from an attacking Eggman as well as several bizarre “accidents” that could have seen many people hurt if they’d not intervened.

Team Fighters managed to intercept Eggman at a number of locations where he was causing trouble, and while they were unable to capture Mecha Sally on any of those occasions, they were at least able to save the local citizens and disrupt Eggman’s plans. With with some help from Mina Mongoose, Nicole was able to overcome her grief and guilt and start working with the Secret Freedom Fighters. These masked heroes secretly provided backup for Team Freedom from the shadows, as well as stopping King Naugus’ plot to take over the city council with a mind control spell.

Surprisingly they got some help in this mission from none other than Geoffrey. Naugus’ apprentice had been aiding the wizard because he legitimately thought he would be an improvement over the rule of the Acorns and would provide stability, but started to turn against him when he realised Naugus was still a moustache-twirling villain with plans for world domination.

But while things were getting better for the comic characters, there was a big problem behind the scenes at Archie Comics, and that problem’s name was Ken Penders. I won’t go into detail because it’s a long and tedious whole thing, and many others have written about it better than I. But to cut a long story short, Ken Penders was trying to claim copyright ownership of the characters he’d created back when he was working on the Sonic series, and he and Archie Comics eventually wound up in court because of it. As Penders was hired under a work for hire contract, everything he’d written under that contract should have been the property of SEGA. However Archie were unable to provide that original documentation, and so the whole lawsuit debacle was eventually brought to a close with a settlement. The details of this settlement weren’t exactly public knowledge, but the fans reading the comics noticed a number of changes and were able to read between the lines that things hadn’t exactly gone well for Archie.

While there were a number of little indicators that made the readers theorise about what was going on behind the scenes, the first massive red flag came with the Chaotix Quest arc in Sonic Universe #46 - 49. The solicits for the first two issues of this arc had said that Vector, Charmy and Espio would be linking up with the Mercian Freedom Fighters, and everyone assumed that would include Rob o’ the Hedge (especially as he was shown front and centre on the originally advertised cover for Sonic Universe #47). However when the issues came out both Rob and his wife Mari-An - two of the many characters that Ken Penders had been trying to get copyright for - had been written out of the story, and in their place were two new characters with similar appearances and roles, Bow Sparrow and Thorn the Lop.

Things got even worse in the main Sonic series because the now-infamous arc called Endangered Species was kicking off in Sonic the Hedgehog #243. This four-issue arc originally involved Team Fighters travelling to the echidna homeland of Albion to aid the locals against an invasion by the Dark Egg Legion. Unfortunately, the majority of the comic-exclusive characters in this arc were also ones that Penders had been trying to get copyright for.

While the first issue survived mostly intact aside from some dialogue and minor art changes, the rest of the arc had to be tossed out and completely rewritten at the eleventh hour. Issue #244 picked up a few hours after the climax of the previous issue with Knuckles arriving on the scene to find every last echidna was gone, banished to another dimension by Thrash the Tasmanian Devil.

Thrash was on a quest for revenge against the species that had doomed his own to near-extinction, and was taking great pleasure in returning the favour. Now instead of fighting against the Dark Egg Legion, Knuckles and Team Fighters found themselves dealing with Thrash and his devil-dog siblings, as well as a previous enemy called the Krudzu Hybrid Hydra, who was now inhabiting the robotic shell of a wrecked Metal Knuckles. Shard, who also wasn’t originally planned to be in this arc, showed up to lend a hand too.

Jesus bloody christ, what a nightmare. Mad props to Ian Flynn, Tracey Yardley, Steven Butler, and everyone else on the Archie team who had to scramble to make all those changes with little to no warning. I can’t even imagine what must have been going through Ian’s head when he was told that on top of the numerous changes he had to make to the scripts for those Sonic Universe issues and the first issue of Endangered Species, that he would also have to throw out and entirely rewrite three entire issues at the last minute. Not to mention the frustration he must have felt to have multiple stories planned around so many characters he could no longer use. Both Geoffrey St John and Elias Acorn were central figures in the plots for the Secret Freedom Fighters and King Naugus arc, and they were now off limits. Most of the other Secret Freedom Fighters were also now banned, as was the New Mobotropolis council, the Freedom Fighters’ parents and other family members, Chaotix members Julie-Su and Saffron Bee (who were written out of the story in Endangered Species by having them among Thrash’s victims), and hundreds of other characters. Some readers theorised that Ian had let his frustration with Penders find its way into the dialogue of the comic.

At any rate, the Endangered Species arc ended with Team Fighters once again in pursuit of Eggman’s Death Egg while Knuckles mourned his losses and had to come to grips with once again being the last echidna.

But now Ian and the team at Archie had a giant mess on their hands. With such a large part of their cast and planned plots no longer usable, how were they supposed to move forward?
