Have I ever told you about the time that I wrote a 250 word fanfic and someone left a 150 word comment on it? Because I think about it constantly. Praise be to the comment gods who are the unsung heroes of fandom.

When your comfort fanfic that you've read over and over is the angstiest book imaginable, what does that say about your mental health?

The Marauders, young lords in 1800s England, take on society and join the London season for the first time. Fresh out of university, James Potter is hoping to find a wife. When he hears gossip about the young ladies who will be out in society, he’s certain that he will fall in love with the belle of the ball, Miss Lily Evans. But that is not what happens. Before he can even begin to court any of the young ladies he meets Regulus Black, and he never looks back.
Or, the Jegulus Regency AU that no one asked for.
If you’re the type of person who would review Pride & Prejudice as 1 star and say “It’s just a bunch of people going to each other’s houses” then you will HATE this.

*deep breaths* I’ve been really nervous about posting this, but I’m super proud of it and I love it so much. I’m going to be posting twice a week on Mondays and Fridays, but the prologue is up a tonight for fun!

I aspire to be as dramatic as Sirius “I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for” Black and Regulus “I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more” Black.

The Harry Potter fandom is fascinating. You have:
Fans of Harry Potter's era. Pretty straightforward.
Fans of both the Harry Potter era and the Marauders era. Believe in HP canon for both.
Fans of only the Marauders era who mostly subscribe to canon but wouldn't operate in the era of the books.
Fans of the Marauders era who have not read the HP books and do not care about the HP canon.
It would be so fascinating to take a seminar on this phenomenon. Especially item 4.
And then I'd want to write 20 page papers on the fandom perception of wolfstar, both whether or not it's canon and the interpretation fans have of the dynamic.
And then a 50 page paper on the incredibly strange treatment that Barty Crouch Jr. gets in this fandom, considering that he was a sociopath in canon who was considered Voldemort's most loyal supporter and he has been babygirl-ified.
And then a 100 page paper on how 20 years after the books came out, jegulus went from zero to one of AO3's top ships in a matter of about three years. It came from nothing, with no basis whatsoever in canon, and took the fandom by storm.
Like this is all incredibly interesting to me. I would like to attend this seminar. Hell, I would like to run this seminar. Marauders Fandom University.

people telling you they reread your fic is the biggest compliment you could ever receive. there are thousands of stories out there begging to be found, to be explored, but your story meant so much to someone that they came back to it eagerly, they went over every word again. to love is to return and loving a fic is rereading it. thank you to all readers and rereaders <3333

Remus discovered his sexuality by spending a lovely summer with a wonderful openly queer boy who quickly became one of his best friends, his confidant and his life-time support afterwards, not to mention his lover for most of his life.
Meanwhile, in the exact same summer, Sirius got his sexuality brutally torn from the deepest pits of his own mind by his abusive, homophobic mother before he could even realize it fully, then got beaten senseless for it and hurt by his own family to the point of almost bleeding out.
I think about this daily and y’all are not thinking about it enough.

Non-fandom stories are a hard sell and I get that. It's a lot like writing gen fics (stories without a ship within fandom) compared to writing a story with a ship. It just does not compare, views wise. It could be demoralizing and I get that. My Gen fic got a total of 60 views after I'm used to hundreds or thousands.
If you don't write for yourself, then I'm sorry for making the comment. That's what I do. The vast majority of all of the words I've written have been read by me and no one else and I don't mind that. I'm not pressed about getting them published, because I enjoy them for me. I re-read them and can feel good about the fact that I'm a much better writer than my self-doubt gives me credit for. It feels really good.
But if that's not you, I'm sorry for the suggestion. It's not the way everyone operates. But it's the reason I'm on fire for writing and write so much. Because for me it isn't about the comments, it's about the story. But if your pleasure in writing comes from validation through comments, then your experience of writing is simply different from mine and you can disregard my comments. We're coming from vastly different perspectives. Mine makes me never stop writing. You can figure out your own motivations that work for you too.
I cannot possibly express how amazing it feels to get repeat commenters on a fanfic. When I was writing my first long form fanfic last spring I could have dedicated it to my first reader, that's how inspired I felt that they commented so consistently.
I remember having the slightly hysterical thought that *I* should check to see if *they* had a Kofi so that I could donate to it since they were the reason my fanfic got finished so quickly.

Write for yourself, you know? That way you can reread it, and enjoy exactly the story that was crafted for your interests. And then you can say you did it, that you wrote the story in your head, that you put it out there and did your best.
Write because you want to write and believe in your story, not just because of comments.
Besides, a lot of people sort by "completed." You may get more hits once it's done just because some people don't read WIPs in case they're never finished. But if yours is finished, it becomes a complete story, and people have faith that it has a beginning and ending and it won't be abandoned so it's worth giving it a shot.

James Potter: I'm watching this quidditch game right? And it's so beautiful I have tears in my eyes - how could you not, right? It's art, it's magic, it's beauty in motion-
Remus: Are you drunk?
James: Plastered, yes, anyway-
