This is a vignette from a mixed media work I am working on in conjunction with my concentric circle pieces. It is an homage to the 1980s graffiti artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat Who had a penchant for wearing expensive Armani suits while painting. I called this piece “The Little Prince.” It’s richly layered Image on OSB board which I’ve been using for many years as a ground for painting. I have also alluded to a reference to Pablo Picasso with the horizontally striped lining I’ve collaged a print at the top that references an image that is found quite often in Basquiat’s work, that being the crown which I have overlaid with the concentric circle in gold. All of this somehow represents the story of a prince held captive by his own talents in a tower dungeon and the only way you could communicate with the outside world was to strike the golden crown on his head against bars that hold him captive. The sound it made rang out across the landscape with such beauty that those who heard it grasped at the air trying to capture it but to no avail.
