adressed. my part of "the exit" collab with @itoshyui. warnings. angst no comfort, mentions of terminal illness at the end.

rin itoshi wasn't perfect. he knew at least that much. he knew that he would always be second to his brother. he would always be sae itoshi's brother, never rin itoshi. never the rin itoshi that had feelings or had dreams, never the rin who liked to birdwatch and have picnics, never the rinnie who only held one person so, so close to his heart.

maybe when he was younger he would've been mad. he would've been mad to have been remembered as the football prodigy's younger brother, not the football prodigy himself. but now he had you. something that finally, finally his brother didn't have. and when it came to that, he was proud to be known as your lover.

because you had promised him forever. you had promised him the heavens and the skies beneath. of all the things in the world, you preferred the simple earthly pleasures of just lying beside him, admiring him, listening to him talk, talking to him. and maybe that was why. was it because he took, he took and took but never gave? that couldn't be the case, he dedicated every walking living breathing moment to you.

were you tired? were you tired of him?

why did you go back on your word? what happened to the hushed late night talks of happily married life and gardens and children and dogs and cats and bakeries and cafes? he knew something was wrong from the way you looked at him. the spark in your eyes had faded, replaced by a long forgone look that he couldn't understand. why? you had been so happy together, once upon a time, your love a bright flame and him a moth, drawn to you. but now, it seemed as though that flame had been extinguished, leaving behind only the smoldering ashes of what your love for him used to be.

and rin itoshi couldn't lose the one thing he ever even had. so he tried. he tried to reach out, to pull you back. you were just like a daydream, just out of reach. he rememered the way you would smile at him. so genuinely sweet, like you were happy to see him. HIM, not rin itoshi, but rinnie. you still smile, but it's a sad, tired smile, disappearing always, forever fading away and receding farther and farther.

oh no, please don't smile at him like that. it kills him, it kills him every single time. do you not want to be near him? your touch, once filled with all the longing in the world, was now distant and cool, as if you was already halfway gone, as if the only thing he had ever come to love, the only thing in his life that had ever come to stay, was already gone and there was nothing he could do about it.

days passed, nights became colder and longer, and still rin itoshi couldn't understand what had gone wrong. was it something he had said? something he had done? had he not been enough for you, somehow? he didn't know how to let you go, how to walk away from the only love he had ever known.

but it seemed like you didn't care. was he just a passing moment in your life? maybe one day, when you had your own children, as you sit on a couch and read them a story, you would remember of your first love and how on a couch just as similar as this one, once many years ago, you had watched countless movies and shared countless kisses, and one day when you picked up a cake for your child in a bakery, you would remember, how under the covers, you and rin itoshi had shared dreams with eachother, and he had promised, one day, when you got married he would build you a little bakery in the corner of a nameless town and you would start anew, away from all the expectations of football and your schoolwork and everything else. and when you buy a house for the first time, he hopes you'll remember sketching a little cottage with a garden with him, describing and planning your dream house instead of doing your homework.

but it didn't seem like you cared, so that's why he didn't tell you how, one day at practice, he had collapsed randomly. he didn't tell you how, when he sat in that chair across from his doctor, her expression solemn, rin itoshi felt nothing.

maybe it was his fault. to fill your head up with these dreams of having a little family and moving to an unnamed town in the middle of nowhere, he started to believe it himself. he started to believe he could have nice things and the ghosts of his brother and his past wouldn't loom around him.

but alas, time is the most unforgiving of fires, and everything, every luxury, every sorrow he and you shared will come to pass.

and maybe, just maybe, by letting him go yourself, you were doing him and yourself a big favour.

when sae told you for the first time that he's going to spain, you cried.

he promised you that he'd call you every day, despite the time difference.

he kissed you softly for the last time before he walked onto his flight.

sae promised he'd always love you.

so when you woke up one morning to find his contact unavailable and all ways of contacting him blocked, you cried. he broke his promise to you. sae was gone, and you couldn't get him back.

that was two years ago today and you were certain that you had moved on from your first love. you had been on dates, kissed other people, dated other people. but it had never felt the same as it did with sae. you two were young, dumb kids, fresh into the world of teenagers, but you loved each other. or so you had thought, and deluded yourself with. you were now eighteen, a full-time college student studying for your dream.

so, why? why did it ache your heart to see the news headlines, all screaming in your face about the return of the 'treasure of japan, itoshi sae' ? it had been four years since he had left the country, abandoning you .. leaving you all alone to drown in your misery. it had been two years since he had cut you out of his life without explanation as to why.

all you wanted today was to be left alone. you cancelled plans with your friends, postponed that date that you were meant to go on tonight. you had accepted the fact that you had never truly gotten over itoshi sae, and you couldn't bare the idea of accidentally bumping into him.

but the world is cruel. fate is even crueler. that's why you were currently stood in front of the man who shattered your young heart, a coffee in his hand. you couldn't breathe. your vision was trained onto his left hand which held the beverage, an engagement ring nestled onto his ring finger.

sae watched you stare at his hand, a cold expression on his face. he had closed his heart off to you years ago, and that wasn't going to change now. he didn't spare you a second glance, walking past you as if you were another nobody he didn't even bother to remember the name of.

you watched him leave .. leave everything that the two of you once shared. hushed whispered of promising to marry each other when you grew up. planning out your wedding with him. buying small cakes from stores, eating it together as you both giggled in between wedding vows. sae had left it all behind without as much as a second thought.

so when the day arrived, the news frantically reported on itoshi sae, a newly married man, posting pictures of the blissfully perfect wedding with his new perfect wife. and you sat alone again, tears staining the front page of your newspaper, your heart shattering once more.

midnight conversations. the second time nagi knew he wanted to share every good thing in his life with you. it was the first time in forever that he couldn't sleep. he kept tossing and turning. " you'd been telling him about your day while you played with his hair. it felt calming, your gentle hands on his scalp. he'd just hummed at your question, but inwardly smiled. stargazing. he would love to stargaze with you. " what time is it ? " he asked. you looked confused but told him the time anyways. " 10 : 56 pm. why ? " " do you wanna go stargazing ? " you sighed " what am i going to do with you , sei ? " but you went. it was beautiful, really, the twinkling stars shooting across the dark sky, but he couldn't focus on that. there was a more beautiful sight right next to him. in that moment, there was no other way to describe it. you were radiating. you eyes were fixed on the stars, then your watch. " HEY !! sei, it's 11:11 !! make a wish ! " you looked at him. " 'ts stupid, no one does that anymore.." he'd grumbled, but seeing the slightly downcast look on your face made him reconsider. " there. " he sighed " i wished. "

itoshi sae is not a good brother. he is neither very kind or approachable. itoshi sae never had a reason to really try. he had foresaken his brother, everything he had ever known, for his dream. his dream of one day becoming the best midfielder in the world. he spent all his time searching, yearning for his futile dream. he never had any reason to care about friends, family, social connections. he lived and breathed soccer. he dreamed soccer. he drank soccer ー he basked in it. he had no reason to do anything except soccer. that was until you.

you, who had so suddenly entered his life, and wrecked such havoc into it. the dreary, achromatic sketch of his life, doused in the radiant colours of your smile, the thought of you, your warmth, your hands, your face, your lips. the incessant routine of work he had bulit up for himself, the repeated cycle of work was everything he had ever known. until you. until you came into his life, and gave him that sparkle back into his eyes. you gave him something to try for. something to smile about, something to dream about at night. something to lay awake to, to colour his cheeks much like his hair dreaming and pondering about what lay ahead of him. what you would talk to him about tommorow. where you would bring him. would you smile at him? would you hold his hand? and, if he gave you a kiss, would you kiss him back?

itoshi sae was never a good brother or a good person, but he had finally found someone to try for. and that was enough. that was all he ever needed. maybe tommorow, when the sun would rise and the morning birds would start singing their songs, he would have to live for soccer again. but today, for as long as the moon was up, he was at least glad to dream under the same stars as you.
