Fashion designer Zandra Rhodes’ penthouse is an explosion of art and color.  With her trademark pink hair, blue eye shadow and theatrical outfits, her home is every bit as vibrant and colorful as she is and reflects her extraordinary talent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zandra lives in a penthouse apartment above the Fashion and Textiles Museum which she founded, and her design studio is on the floor below.

She had the entire open plan living space painted like a rainbow when she first moved in, drawing lines for the colors herself with chalk and commissioning a tile company to create the swirling colored floor.

Several pieces of art by Andrew Logan are on display including mosaic busts of Zandra, colorful lamps and an enormous mirrored sculpture of Ghandi.

A small vibrant blue kitchen is part of the open space. Delicate pastel dishes are on display, along with more deeply colored ones.

Chairs in the shape of Zs, originally created for Zandra’s flagship stores in the 1970s, are dotted around, while a mannequin called Ethel oversees proceedings, resplendent in Zandra’s original designs.

No serenity in this bedroom- it’s as bright as the rest of the home.

What advice would you give to someone struggling to define their signature style?
Zandra Rhodes: Don’t give up. Try and be honest to yourself and put on paper what your heart tells you to do and keep doing it. Promote it; believe in yourself, as long as you believe it will eventually happen. Never worry about making a mistake.

Zandra Rhodes's Lead Sweaters
Zandra Rhodes’s Lead Sweaters
Tumblr media
Zandra Rhodes has started doing sweaters, startling sweaters. Designed a black kimono cardigan. Holes for arms to go through, rose pink edge and inset. Nell Campbll, small Australian dancer and actress, wears it, above, with Gamba’s pink wool leg warmers and a pair of black tights. Then, below, hugs Martin Sharp, Australian painter, wears another sweater that’s pink and green on top, huge green…

Lilies bed, Savoir x Zandra Rhodes, 2020
'During lockdown, Zandra delved into her archives to create an exclusive artwork for Savoir based on one of her most significant and identifiable motifs, ‘Field of Lilies’.
A gift of lilies from Japanese fashion designer, Issey Miyake, inspired Zandra to draw the delicate flowers for her own collections. The iconic motif has been reworked specifically for a Savoir bed with an elegant arc of lilies the focal point.
The Savoir x Zandra Rhodes collaboration is a celebration of two iconic British brands synonymous with style, innovation and bespoke craft. The luxurious heritage of Savoir pairs harmoniously with Zandra Rhodes’ glamorous and eclectic aesthetic.
The LILIES artwork is digitally printed on a velvet fabric before upholstered.' X

Manhattan print by Zandra Rhodes for Rebel Walls, 2021
'The pattern for Manhattan is a magical zigzag print, celebrating the electric city of New York. The print was first featured in the 1984 Magic Carpet Collection on chiffon dresses with gorgeous pointed hems and hand-finished glittering beads.
In the 80’s Zandra was a frequent visitor of Studio 54. It was a fabulous, glitzy time where Donna Summer was all the rage and Zandra would be pictured leaving the club in the early hours with Bianca Jagger. At that time, Zandra was staying with her friend Divine in his penthouse on 85th Street and would go out early in the morning and draw the skyscrapers. What a monumental time for arts, fashion and subcultures! Full of colourful explosions and glitter, Zandra portrayed The Empire State and Chrysler Buildings as a giant, sparkling icicles.' X
