Starcrossed, Part 1
Hello all you happy people! Today we’re going to start live blogging the DCAU on this site, because Tumblr sucks. I hope to have all my old Tumblr posts up here soon but for today we’re going to start with Starcrossed, the season finale of the second season of Justice League. Ah, Kaznia. The DCAU’s favourite punching bag. I remember when terrorists were the convenient generic bad guy. They…

March Round-Up
Hello all you happy people! Today is the last day in March, so I’m going to discuss my plans for April just to give you all a head’s up. First off, starting tomorrow, I’m going to start posting my live blogs of the DCAU on this site. Tumblr is dead space and I’m really trying to kill my social media so… yeah. Second, I plan to release Legends of Infernia in early access on Steam either this…

Wild Cards, Part 2
Written by Stan Berkowitz and Dwayne MacDuffie
Directed by Dan Riba
Batman's right. Disarming the bomb is more important
Why didn't GL encase the bomb with his ring?
Joker, you missed your calling in life. You should've been a tv exec.
That is not how first aid works.
Finally, a classic Superman moment
That's not going to end well.
Technical?
It's weird hearing Robin's pre-teen voice coming from an adult
Flash, don't gloat
Harley, how are you not dead?
That's an image and a half.
Bruce's newest feat: Craft Disturbing Image
Yes, yes he has.
It's not just the crooks in Gotham that are stupid.
Super-grandma
He ran away with the bomb, dumb ass.
Superman, you are a cruel and heartless bastard.
Ace kind of looks like the main character of Sarah's Scribbles.
Well that was random
One day, Joker will learn not to piss off Harley.
And one day, Harley will learn not to trust Joker.
Honestly, Batman's gone through so much fear gas and shit with Mad Hatter that he's probably built some resistance to mind control at this point.
You're up shit creek Joker.
Don't worry, nobody dies in this show. They just go crazier than they normally are.
To Professor Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, naturally.
Now that's how you end an episode
Damn straight grandma.

Wild Cards
One of the best episodes of animation ever.
And we open on GL and Hawkgirl flirting. As is proper.
...Dude. They're an advanced space faring people. Of course they have banks! Also, Hawgirl was a cop (allegedly) so yeah, she's tapped into a few bank records.
I think Joker should be allowed to blow up Vegas, personally.
Gwynplane entertainment is a nice shoutout.
This is the first time we see Joker's redesign and while it's not as good as BTAS's, it's still a lot better than TNBA's. Hamill sounds better, too.
Written by Stan Berkowitz and Dwayne McDuffie
Directed by Butch Lukic
Batman's head is basically an egg balanced on a coffee cup. The Joker is a serious of triangles.
Pre-Margot Robbie Harley is such a breath of fresh air. The Oscars are a glorified popularity contest and you shouldn't pay them any attention, but I'm glad that fucking bimbo film didn't win any awards.
Joker, brother, you have no right to call anybody else a fashion disaster.
Old ladies are the most badass things on the planet and don't let anybody else tell you otherwise. That woman could probably tank the blast and not feel a thing.
Joker could open an act in Vegas and make a trillion dollars a year and never break a sweat.
Hey, it's the Teen Titans!
This one episode caused more continuity issues than Mystery of the Batwomen did.
Why didn't Superman just freeze the bomb with his freeze breath?
Joker, you are the worst boss ever.
Our first taste of Cadmus.
Lack of pain isn't invincibility.
I love how the timer is episode running length
Joker you are a creeper
This is the closest thing to a noble act the Joker has ever done.
Of course the bomb's a fake. Why plant one bomb when you can plant dozens?
Scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one Joker
That's a spicy meatball.
Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier came out in 2004 and I have to wonder if this episode influenced that comic. Both have big action sequences set in Vegas that involve fake bombs.
That's a proper lad, Joker.

Comfort And Joy
There is no comfort or joy in -20 weather. Summer is the only good season.
Why is Hawkgirl the only one in a coat? J'onn is more naked than she is.
Aw, look at the cute little octopus aliens!
Well, that's kind of a depressing note to begin an episode on.
Written by Paul Dini. That explains a lot.
Directed by Butch Lukic.
GL snowboarding. Cool. I don't think we get to see a lot of the Green Lantern's just... using their constructs for fun. At least, not in JL. Probably something that happens more often in the comics.
Ooh, snowball fight! We weren't allowed to do those at school, for fear of ice and rocks. Which, sadly, some kids would have absolutely packed into their snowballs.
Do orphanages even exist anymore?
Okay, that's a stupid toy. But I can see why the kids (and the Flash, who is a big kid) would like it.
Honestly, Clark should have brought J'onn to the Kents ages ago. They have a lot of experience with helping an alien fit in.
Okay, I want to talk about this line here. We've talked about how Barbara was originally introduced as a love interest and relative equal to Batman. How she was not intended as a love interest for Dick Grayson and how that relationship was the product of internal politics at DC and remains a serious downgrade for Barbara. Seriously. She went from an independent hero to the sidekick's love interest. Fuck. that.
We've even talked a bit about how Barbara and Kara are bisexual and are super into each other. So I want to be clear here: they ain't skiing. Barbara has Kara holed up in a lodge somewhere (probably something she sweet talked Bruce into loaning her) and they. are. fucking. like. energizer bunnies on steroids. Barbara is Kara's domme and she totally has Kara tied up, whipped, whatever her evil little mind can think of. And Kara is loving it. Kara is a naughty sub who continually provokes Barbara into more punishment.
And when they're not fucking, they're doing each other's nails and drinking enough hot chocolate to give the entire country of Canada diabetes while warming themselves by the fire.
Ah, Streaky. It's funny how much of the BatFam has a thing for cat people. There's Bruce/Selina (and arguably Talia; she's always struck me as very feline); Dick/Starfire (descended from alien cats); and Barbara/Kara (owns a cat).
Ooh, that had to hurt.
Ah, Black Friday. That American shit needs to be outlawed here in Canada.
You know, Santa's real in the comics.
Don't worry about it Ma. Every man in the DCAU wears the same size! (I kid, I kid)
Shayera, your definition of a celebration is not the same as most peoples.
Hey, it's the Ultra-Humanite. How'd you get out of prison?
Ammo's heavy. Like, really heavy. And that battery pack doesn't look any lighter. Why do bad guys only notice they're out of ammo when they pull the damned trigger?
Thing about holidays: if you're looking for company, you can find it. Jewish, Christian, secular, whatever. Holidays are communal affairs by design.
Shayera, you're a bitch.
Okay, on the one hand this was kind of a dick move by the Ultra-Humanite. On the other hand, The Nutcracker is genuinely loved by kids, so I can see why the kids appreciate it even if it isn't the exact toy they wanted.
And why wouldn't kids love The Nutcracker? You've got action, romance, adventure, deliciously evil villains... there's a reason why it plays every Christmas and there's three hundred adaptations of it.
That's so sweet. In a Conan-the-Barbarian way.
The DCAU has a thing for making its male stars sing, huh?

Hereafter, Part II
It's not as good as part one. It just isn't.
Ooh, injured Superman.
Written by Dwayne McDuffie
Directed by Butch Lukic
I do like that this is episode demonstrates that Superman is resourceful even without his powers. Too many writers and critics think there's nothing to Supes but his powers and it's just... an infuriating take.
Yup.
See, now, this part I'm not sure on. On the one hand, Grant Morrison's assertion that Superman living on a farm would make vegetarian is, like everything else that bald moron has ever said, complete bullshit. Farms, especially livestock farms, are a bloody business and Superman would have grown up branding and castrating cattle, hunting and killing coyotes and other vermin, etc. He probably wouldn't have slaughtered cattle himself, but he'd definitely have grown up eating steak.
There's a reason 90% of Alberta hates K.D. Lang.
On the other hand... killing and skinning a wolf seems a bit much.
This part reminds me way too much of Planet of the Apes, which is one of the dumbest science fiction movies ever made.
I love the Timm style, but it does not do beards well. Which is a problem when you only have two characters and they both have beards!
Recent studies have suggested the roaches wouldn't survive the apocalypse actually. Probably depends on what kind of apocalypse we get hit with.
That's only the two times you know about, Supes.
The voice actor for Vandal Savage isn't great, but he delivers that charmingly juvenile line so well.
Savage has gone even weirder than normal.
No, Super Conan!
I love scenes like this where we get a taste of just how varied Timm's designs actually are. Not that they ever get acknowledged.

Legends of Infernia Playable Demo
Hello all you happy people! Josh Stoodley here with a pleasant surprise, I hope. As I detailed in my last post, I’ve had to move development of Legends of Infernia from RPGMaker MV on the Switch to RPGMaker MZ on the PC. As fate would have it, this week has been a great one to work on the game. So here it is! The first playable demo for Legends of Infernia. It is very incomplete. I haven’t even…

Machine Guns Are Lesbian Coded
Hello all you happy people, and happy new year! My new year was happily busy, with a great many dogs and a great deal of drawing practice done. Alas, not as much writing, but still I am greatly pleased with how the last two weeks or so have turned out. I got a geometry kit and some stencils for Christmas and my drawing has improved dramatically. I’ll show off some samples later this…

Hereafter
I don't know who put the episode listings in my dvd case, but whoever they were, they were incompetent.
A mystical secret society of Superman's villains is a little goofy for this show.
Hey, we haven't been in Metropolis in a while
Maggie Sawyer's trench coat is really short for a kid's cartoon.
Written by Dwayne McDuffie
Directed by Butch Lukic
That doesn't sound like Livewire; more like Harley.
Hey, it's Optimus Prime!
Yeah, that's definitely not Livewire. It's not even a good impression of Livewire's normal voice actress.
This whole episode is just one long lampshade of cartoon physics
Wow, Kalibak actually did something this episode.
Okay, that was bullshit. Kalibak should not be able to one-shot Wonder Woman and then have trouble with Batman! Yes, Batman can beat Wonder Woman (otherwise why have him on the League? Same goes for Wonder Woman), but he should still not be able to stand up to someone who can one-shot Diana!
Yeah, that's not gonna help you, Toyman.
Diana has a nasty temper in this series, and I'm not sure I like it.
Pretty sure Diana hasn't reconciled with her mother at this point.
Given that the League has often operated without Supes in the comics...
Batman doing his Batman thing. One of the best parts of Batman and Robin was how they depicted Batman as a rejection of death. That Bruce became the Batman, not as a way to punish evil, but to prevent others from suffering the same harm he had.
And this scene I think encapsulates that as well. Batman rejects his friend's death. At first at an emotional level, a gut reaction. But in rejecting death, Batman discovers the truth: that Superman isn't dead, merely lost.
That came out a little more disorganized than in my head, but my point is this: Batman, fundamentally, is a rejection of death. He is a tiny yes in the darkness that consumes us all. He is, hands down, the most optimistic character in DC Comics.
Also, he's right. Even in comics, disintegrator rays tend to leave some kind of evidence.
Of course, it's Batman, so he's still a dick about it.
I love Lois.
Thank Godzilla Lex is wearing his proper suit again. None of this supervillain BS
Hey, it's the Kents! I think they've aged somewhat since we saw them last? Also Lana and Supergirl. Who is not sitting beside her girlfriend Barbara Gordon which is a crime against humanity.
That's a nice monument they gave him.
This episode would be better without Lobo.
See, this is one of the ways I think Clark is more cynical than Bruce. Clark calls his mission 'the never ending battle' whereas Bruce thinks he can win. That he can eliminate crime. That's optimism bordering on naivete.
Kalibak is back to being the butt-monkey. Of course he is.
Yeah, that fake Livewire voice is really grating.

The Long November
Hello all you happy people. Josh Stoodley here with another blog post. This one is mostly an apology. My real life job, dog-sitting, got in the way of my writing last month. You’ll notice I didn’t post anything since early November? Yeah that’s cause I didn’t write anything for three weeks straight last month due to dogs. We talk a lot about pit bull aggression and what to do if the dog is…
