Eret only had one year with the dragons, can you imagine how terrible that feels? Of course everyone feels terrible about the dragons leaving, but I imagine that Eret sees and hears them talk about their memory with their dragons, and he just wishes he’d given up on hunting much earlier so he could have had more time creating those kinds of memories.
