Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
@tiawilliamswrites
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotic author, who battles an invisible disease. Shane Hall is an award-winning author known for being a recluse. So when Shane shows up unannounced in NYC at a Black literary event where Eva is at everyone is shocked, but not as much as Eva herself. No one knows Shane and Eva spent a wild week madly in love twenty years earlier, and since then they have been secretly writing to each other in their books. Will this be the chance they have been waiting for to reconnect and rekindle the spark from their past? Or will the traumas that haunt them be too hard to overcome while reliving those seven days in June?
The emotional roller coaster this book put me through😩 I cried, laughed, sweated, screamed! It’s no surprise that I really enjoyed this book because I have only heard great things. Williams tackles themes like mental health, living with chronic illness, single parenthood, family issues/generational trauma, racism/systemic racism (and more!)!! The way she effortlessly sows these topics into this book is amazing and really helps you connect to the characters and identify with them! The romance and banter between Shane and Eva is *chef’s kiss* and her daughter Audre is hilarious. I’m not a huge fan of second chance romance trope but this was done perfectly, and the audiobook was great!!

Land of Milk and Honey by C Pam Zhang
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
A smog has spread throughout the world depriving the planet of crops and slowly destroying wildlife. A young chef manages to escape the hellscape by getting a job on a luscious Italian mountaintop working for the global elite. Although food is abundant and decadent, and the air is fresh and clean, working for her mysterious employer and his high maintenance daughter comes with its own set of problems.
This book was fantastic! I loved the dystopian background, which felt so real like it could happen today (pollution creating a smog that wipes out plants and eventually animals). And it makes you think how it will affect careers such as chefs, farmers, scientists, meteorologists, etc. Zhang illustrates the chef’s thoughts and these characters so well with excellent prose, metaphors, and details! The research to get the ingredients and names for all of the recipes is so well done and meticulous to show the stark contrast between the wonderful life on the mountain and pollution in the rest of the world. Another great theme Zhang subtly weaved was the subjugation and interchangeably of Asian women. How they are seen as objects and not a whole person. I definitely recommend this book, especially the audiobook!!

Everyone’s Thinking It by Aleema Omotoni
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
At an elite boarding school in the English countryside, Nigerian cousins Iyanu and Kitan are thrown into the middle of a schoolwide conspiracy when everyone’s juicy relationship secrets are released, Burn Book style, the week before the annual Valentine’s Day Ball.
This book’s vibe is a retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream mixed with Dear White People which I actually really liked! A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays (I named my cat Hermia!!) and I loved how the author wove in issues that teens deal with nowadays such as blackfishing, bullying, peer pressure, sexual identity, cultural identity, etc. I buddy read this book with @bookswithjaybraggs and it was fun to chat with her about the mystery in this book, and speculate ‘who did it?’ This book was a fun, cute YA mystery with a side of romance that imparted knowledge about how to navigate tough situations.

The Roommate Risk by Talia Hibbert
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Jasmine Allen doesn’t believe in love. Her life is uncomplicated without romance to muck it up—she has a great job, good friends, and a care free attitude. Until a plumbing disaster at her apartment leaves her homeless! Luckily, her best friend Rahul offers her his extra room. Only there’s one problem…Rahul has been in love with Jas since they become friends in college without her knowledge. Will living with her under the same roof shake the iron clad control he’s had over his feelings these last few years?
So…I had a few thoughts about this book! lol First—I am fairly new to pure romance novels, and although they aren’t my favorite genre (since I prefer a mix of fantasy/sci-fi + romance) I do like them! BUT there has to be plot as well!!!! This book was mostly romance/SMUT! 😂 I like me some smut but I’m all about the build up and sexual tension. Plus I listened to the audiobook and the English actor’s voice saying ‘knickers’ at 6am while I was driving to work had me cackling like a child!! Those are my reasons for 3 stars…I felt like the characters weren’t fleshed out enough, and we barely knew the side characters!

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
For Feyre, and her family, her hunting is a means of survival. One day when she kills a faerie transformed as a wolf—gaining a new pelt to trade and taking out a dangerous faerie—she soon finds herself with an enraged beast on her doorstep! The beast captures Feyre and bring her to his faerie kingdom for murdering his friend, only he is isn’t just a beast but someone with a court full of secrets. As Feyre learns to live amongst the faeries, she grows closer to her captor and realizes what she would do for love.
I really struggled with the first half of this book! The world building was so slow for me, plus I didn’t like the characters—Feyre I couldn’t connect with, the sisters and dad were awful, Tamlin and Lucien I liked, but let’s say it was rough! Once the plot picked up a little over halfway (aka Rhysand was introduced) it got better, and the ending really made this book! I felt like I knew characters more which made the slow build worth it. Plus the couple of plot twists to wrap it up definitely made me want to grab the next book! It wasn’t a five start read just because I probably had such high expectations from all the hype surrounding this series going in and it started so slow, but it was a good book overall!

The Centre by Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Anisa Ellahi’s day job is translating subtitles for Bollywood movies, but her dream job is translating great literary works! When her mediocre, British boyfriend Adam shows off his extensive knowledge of multiple languages, Anisa’s self worth hits an all time low. The final straw is when Adam learns to speak her native tongue, Urdu, fluently overnight, and she forces him to tell his secret. There is an elite, invite-only language program that guarantees fluency almost instantly. Anisa practically jumps at the offer to enroll. As she learns more about this mysterious but efficient program, Anisa discovers the cost might be too gruesome to stomach…
Wow this book! It has a great plot, and I loved that it had subtle gothic thriller vibes throughout. It was also nice to learn through Anisa about Pakistani culture, the dynamic of India and Pakistan and the history of the two countries (since I know very little I am ashamed to admit!), as well as life as a British Pakistani woman in England. The reason for my 3 star rating is although Anisa isn’t a very likeable character, she was relatable (everyone makes mistakes in friendships, relationships, their careers, etc.). But most of the other characters weren’t likeable either…and I feel like we need SOMEONE to root for lol. Also, at the end of a book I need some kind of conclusion. It was a very ambiguous ending which I wasn’t a fan of.
It’s a good book, and fans of Babel will like it. There is more of a focus on relationships/friendships v. translations/literary work than Babel.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Misery Lark, daughter of the Vampyre council’s leader, has been forced into an alliance with the Weres in the form of a marriage. She thinks pack leader and Alpha, Lowe, must have his own reasons for entering into this marriage of convenience since Weres and Vampyres have been mortal enemies for as long as she can remember. As long as the Vampyres, and her new husband don’t suspect her real motive for getting closer to Lowe Moreland, then all is fair in love and war!
I’ll be honest and say I had no idea what to expect coming into this book—(I went in not knowing the gist) and I liked The Love Hypothesis, but I absolutely LOVED this book! It has everything I love: werewolves, marriage of convenience, witty banter, and a great subplot! I’ve heard some mixed reviews, and to address people’s concerns…this is NOT an A/B/O book. There is knotting in the spicy scenes, so maybe people were confused, mislead or disappointed? If they expected full on A/B/O romance, this is knot the book!! lol Also, if you have read Ali’s books before her female characters are super book smart, but let’s be honest sometimes are clueless with love even when it’s obvious. I find it charming! lol (hello idiots in love!)
Anyway, the banter between Misery, who is not even the most likeable character—she truly hates everyone—and Lowe who is such a quiet authoritative Alpha wolf is amazing! The side characters are great, and I liked that she branched off into a new subgenre. Pick up this book if you’re a Ali Hazelwood fan or looking for something different in your romance read. I heard someone say—this is Rennesmee’s love story with Jacob and now that’s all I’ll think of and it kills me☠️

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Xingyin grew up as a secret on the moon with her mother, who was exiled there for stealing an elixir of immortality from the Celestial Emperor. When the Emperor discovers her identity, Xingyin flees and seeks an opportunity to train with the Crown Prince, Liwei, of the Celestial Kingdom. Her only goal is to free her mother, so when the ruthless Celestial Emperor offers a bargain for her mothers freedom, will Xingyin risk everything even love to free the moon goddess?
I really liked the world of the Celestial Kingdom. Since it is the first book, there is a lot of world building which is why it has a slow start. But once you get into this book it picks up speed, and I liked the character development. Xingyin is so headstrong, but still romantic and sometimes reckless which is very relatable. The love triangle between Xingyin, Liwei, and Wenzhi is great and honestly I still don’t know who I want her to choose!! It’s so refreshing to read a story about Chinese mythology that is written well!

Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Adina Walker has worked so hard to fit in and be perfect at her elite, white upper class boarding school Edgewater Academy. Which is why she is now paying for her one mistake—her lapse in control—with the loss of her coveted Yale acceptance. She soon learns of a chance to win back her future…joining the Finish. A mysterious competition put on by the wealthy founding family of Edgewater, the Remingtons, that promises money and power to the winner. But Adina finds out that playing in vicious games with the rich and powerful might just cost her her life.
I really liked the premise of this book! It had dark academia vibes plus read like a thriller, and had diversity which was a great combo. I loved how it showed classism and racism and how it can be disguised as “tradition.” One thing I wanted that this book lacked was romance, or redeeming romance with two of the characters, but that’s just me being nit-picky. It didn’t need it, and it’s nice to not always have the MFC need a man to help her, etc. but I’m a romantic LOL. This was a great book, and if you’re wanting a book that’s a mix between The Hunger Games and The Selection check this one out!

Blood Like Fate by Liselle Sambury
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Voya has finally become a witch and passed her Calling, but it has come at a steep price. Her grandmother is dead, her cousin hates her, and now she must lead her family as their Matriarch. While struggling with her newfound gifts, she has a vision of the future that includes her former boyfriend, Luc. How will she protect her family and the witch community from this deadly premonition, and will she have to take down the boy she loves to do it?
It was so great to be returning to finish this series. I loved the characters and their complexities, and felt like it was a purposeful and well thought out plot. There were parts in the middle that felt like the book was dragging, then a huge plot point would hit and get me sucked back in! It is hard to write a great sequel and this book definitely checked all the boxes. If you’re looking for a good witchy book read the Blood Like duology!

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Maddy Washington has always been an outcast at her small town Georgia high school, but one day the teasing gets worse when her darkest secret is revealed…she is biracial. Maddy has been passing for white her whole life due to pressure from her strict white father. After the video of Maddy’s classmates bullying her goes viral, media pressure forces the school to host its first ever integrated prom. And while the town and all of Maddy’s schoolmates think things have blown over, Maddy has one more secret no one knows about…
I was so excited to have finished my first 5 star read of the year! This book was incredible! I listened to the audiobook and HIGHLY recommend it (I dont know how else to read this book!). The way this story is told is so unique, there are multiple POVs, and at parts it’s interview/podcast style but it doesn’t detract from the story it’s helps give clarity. I loved how it tackles racism, micro aggressions, white passing, white privilege, etc. but in a way that felt organic not force fed. It also is legit a horror/thriller/scary book! So if you’re looking for Get Out type vibes this is the book!

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Violet Sorrengail has studied all her life to become a Scribe at Basgiath War College, but when her hard ass mom, the commanding general, forces her to compete to enter the dragon Rider Quadrant—it’s do or die. She’s smaller, and physically fragile, but she definitely smarter than the other cadets! Now if her insanely attractive wingleader, Xaden Riorson, doesn’t kill her then the dragons just might…
I had low expectations starting this book because when a book is so hyped on sm, sometimes it can be misleading and not be as good as everyone thinks it is. That was NOT the case for Fourth Wing! The world building was well thought out, Xaden and Violet had unique enough backstories that made you invest in them, and the slow burn is what I LIVED for!!! ✦This year I started my bookstagram and I have read so many wonderful books and fanfics, made some great mutual friends, found my love of reading again, and joined an awesome booksta community!
✦Since I wasn’t sure how much time I could dedicate to reading (while going back to school), and I didn’t think I would be able to reach my goal I set it at 20. But I passed it! 27/20✨
✦Fantasy was my most read genre…no surprise! Babel by R.F. Kuang was my favorite book of the year, although I read a lot of 5 star books
✦This year I intentionally read a majority of BIPOC authors/books because I realized that in the past I wasn’t reading a lot of diverse books
✦2024 goals:
read more nonfiction books
increase my reading goal
I can’t wait to start the new year—mainly because I’m looking forward to so many book releases!!
