Things Bruce Wayne Never Did Again After Jason’s Murder
I was just thinking about how drastically different Bruce became after Jason died. Like, this man just stopped doing so much, especially when it came to his familial bonds and relationships.
Correct me if I’m wrong, (because I’m just spitballing here and maybe I just haven’t read a comic where it did happen) but there’s a couple things I’ve never seen Bruce do with the other kids in the comics after Jason died.
Being (emotionally) close with his children:
I’ve noticed Bruce point this out from time to time in his thought boxes; that letting people get close to him, by admitting that he cares about them, is what gets them killed. Or at least the fear of that doesn’t allow him to form attachments anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which I find interesting, because Bruce was so terrified of losing Jason during his run as Robin. Like, it was actually concerning to me how often this man would hallucinate or dream about Jason getting hurt or dying in the eighties…? Heck, Bruce’s mind on fear gas still went to Jason even after his death. But that didn’t prevent him from creating a bond with Jason during his child years (as you’ll notice his name wasn’t mentioned with the others above).
So I’m wondering if his murder was the point where this became a realised fear for Bruce and made him push people away because it came true.
Tumblr media
Being easy with physical affection:
Bruce is always so stiff these days when it comes to patting his kids on their shoulders or head, or heaven forbid, giving them hugs if they look traumatised enough. He is just a very awkward man. Like, what happened to that other guy? The one who was always ruffling his son’s hair and tucking him under his arm like it was the only natural thing to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being playful with his kids:
This one hurts. Like Bruce could be so fun with his first two kids. He teased and wrestled with them, played video games, took them out to movies and games and racetracks, and it was 90% completely non-mission related. Heck, he even made puns himself sometimes. He enjoyed spending time with them and put effort into doing just that.
After Jason was murdered, I never saw that again. Tim was always doing his solo thing, and didn’t really spend time with Bruce outside of cowl; (of course, he wasn’t exactly his son then like his predecessors were, so that might have come off as weird); Bruce and Cass have a very mission-focused (obsessive) relationship and Damian…oh, Damian. Yeah, Bruce wasn’t taking him out to the zoo or anything on weekends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Driving the kids to school:
Well, Cassandra never really received any formal education as a child in a public school setting type-a-way, but I don’t believe Bruce has ever driven Tim or Damian to school. It was always Alfred who chauffeured them. I wondered if the thought bothered Bruce. Hence, I’m putting it down on the list of things Bruce stopped doing after Jason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calls the kids by nicknames:
I’ve never seen Bruce refer to Tim, Cass or Damian by any sort of nickname, despite the fact that he always seemed to be affectionately calling Dick and Jason some form of “chum,” “lad,” or “sport,” while they were Robin. Heck, I think Bruce might have even used “Jay,” more than Jason’s actual name when he was a kid.

Allowing the Robins to wear their uniforms upstairs.
This one was a three A.M thought to me. I know for a fact that Dick and Jason used to chill in the Manor in full or partial uniform during their runs and even kept their uniforms in their bedroom closets, but then when Tim became Robin, Bruce all of a sudden strictly implemented the rule of ‘no uniforms upstairs.’
Part of me wonders if he was trying to separate “Robin” from the family home aspect as a grieving thing. Like he needed to keep the two separate after Jason.

Celebrate Holidays
So apparently, “holidays aren’t a thing,” anymore during Tim’s era according to the Bat-scrooge. Which is actually kinda funny, considering he would put up a full-on Christmas tree in the cave only a few years prior or at least make some effort so that his kids could have a jolly christmas despite unhappy circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I must note that although they (especially Bruce,) never celebrated in the Manor, the other Bats did attempt to have the holidays together on their own which is really cute. And good for them! Who cares about that scrooge Bruce?

AU where the real reason Damian has a grudge against non-blood brothers is because a long time ago Talia told him Jason was his brother and Damian loved him for that but then Jason "abandoned" him (left the League and seemingly forgot about him) and Damian has been holding a grudge ever since
Meanwhile Jason either (a) lost his memories of his time in the League prior to being dunked in the pit, or (b) he just believes that Damian had been too young at the time to remember and so he doesn't bother bringing it up

I'm thinking about Jason Todd dying in early spring. when the weather is just starting to turn around. before the flowers bloom.
I'm thinking about Jason Todd feeling alone again. when he'd thought he had a home, a place to belong. "did felipe fall...or was he pushed?"
I'm thinking about Jason Todd trying to save his mom. maybe he thought that the third time might be the charm. maybe he would be enough for Sheila.
I'm thinking about Jason Todd dying in early spring. april showers bring may flowers. but Bruce was too late and Sheila betrayed him and he still tried to save her and he didn't get to see the flowers bloom.

ok i know we're all fans of the whole 'jason's comms are off for a minute and everyone freaks out' idea.
but consider, everyone is so used to jason going completely off the radar for extended periods of time (either because of missions or just. him not wanting to talk to anyone), so when he's actually in a hostage situation/kidnapped, it takes for a ransom deal to be sent for anyone to even consider the possibility of him being in trouble.
like, batman comes across a letter addressed to him on patrol, explaining that they've got red hood captive + are torturing him slowly to death as they speak. bruce just makes a mental note of it for later.
bruce: "dick, can you go check on your brother at some point tomorrow?"
dick: "but you know how he gets when we go round snooping for him when he doesn't want to be found"
bruce: "yes, but there are people claiming to have him hostage, and although i'm sure he's fine, i just want to cover my bases."
(he was in fact, not fine)

Good parenting
[Jason and Damian walking out the manors front door, carrying a bazooka, a katana, and some grenades]
Damian: Goodbye, Father
Bruce: Bye boys, good luck with your dastardly plans
Jason: We won't need any luck

It's so incredibly funny to me that somehow some people think Tim is a boring straightlace and Jason is deranged and unhinged
Like Jason at his worst is a murderous crime lord who also has a moral conscience, protects children and sex workers, works to make the worst parts of Gotham safer and wants to know that his dad cares
Tim at his worst on the other hand.... Rampant murder with NO morals, becomes Batman and uses the gun that killed Bruce's parents, dictator, takes over like half of America, goes back in time like a couple times to tell his younger self that this is their inevitable end just to fuck with HIMSELF
Jason at his best is the happy robin, loves school, cares for sex workers becomes a crime lord to help make sure the people who are addicted aren't being given toxic shit
Tim at his best is entirely unhinged, stalking Batman and Robin through the streets, blackmailing Batman, all the young justice shenanigans, creating a fake uncle to avoid adoption, beefing with a like 9 year old (deserved imo 9 year olds are MEAN), lies to everyone including batman and take pride in it
Like besties one is exponentially more of a black sheep and it isn't the drug lord, it's the heroic sidekick of batman
Yes Jason is still out on the streets wildin and feral but I don't think people give enough credit to how normal he is for his background
Yes Tim is CEO but he's also been 17 for years and probably has taken cocaine to see what it felt like

I feel like Bruce and Jason both have distorted expectations of the other post-DITF but almost in opposite directions. Bruce remembers Jason as the Robin he didn't train properly, the one whose arrogance and need to prove himself got the worst of him. Ultimately, he is remembered as Bruce's failure. Jason remembers Bruce and Batman as a safe place for him, a home, the best thing to happen to him.
So, Jason expects more from Bruce; he comes back, and he keeps holding out hope that Bruce will do what (Jason thinks) is right by Jason. But Bruce has spent years convincing himself that Jason wasn't ready for Robin and Jason was too violent and Jason didn't understand what it means to fight by Batman's side. He sees what Jason's doing now and he assumes Jason doesn't understand, that Jason still doesn't understand. Because that's easier than confronting the idea that Jason has always understood, and is still standing against him.

Chuckling to myself imagining Jason coming off as a snarky New Jersey bad-boy in English, but sounding like some prim and proper little prince in Tibetan because he learned the language from Talia, and she only speaks with perfect formal Lhasa diction.
It’s to the point that when they first met, Essence and Ducra assumed that Jason was Talia’s rumored son. The first time Essence hears Jason use English and he calls someone a ‘brain donor’ she gets whiplash.

You have to recognize your capacity for harm. You cannot omit the harm you've done to others to remain "good." Anybody can be a bigot. Anyone can be an abuser. Anyone can harm anyone at any time even those who have been harmed themselves. The world is not made up of victims and villains only, this is life, not a Saturday morning cartoon and you are a human being who can or maybe even has hurt others and you HAVE to acknowledge that to learn to be better.

I think Roy Harper is the personification of all those “my unemployed friend on a Tuesday” memes. Even if he was employed. Like you’d walk into his home and it’s just full of Contraptions. He just does Things and the purpose is unintelligible
Jason is like this too but in a less noticeable way. Roy is like “I welded a toaster oven to my assault rifle to see if it would do anything when I zapped it with a taser” and Jason is like “I read four textbooks and wrote an academic paper about the Mesopotamian grain economy”
“what did you guys do today”
“we liberated a country and then I built a motorized couch that’s technically street legal and then Jason blew up the road couch”

I think Bruce Wayne is a loving parent, but not a good one. He is a psychologically tormented person who never got over his trauma or developed any healthy coping mechanisms but he just keeps ending up with them and doesn’t really know what to do with the kids except what has always ‘worked for him’?
Like Dick’s parents die right in front of him and Bruce is just “hey kid, my parents died in front of me too. And you know what helped me? Punching bad guys.”
And Jason? He finds this kid stealing his tires and he’s not afraid of Batman. He doesn’t seem afraid of anything. He’s got a big heart and cares a lot about people, but no one cares about him. But he’s got a strong sense of justice So Bruce looks at the kid and goes, “hey kid, you seem lost. You know what helps me when I’m feeling lost? Punching bad guys.”
With tim it’s a little more complicated. Bc this kid showed up at his front door and put him in a corner (tim saved him) and Bruce went, “hey kid, you seem pretty good at this. I do encourage you to find a different extracurricular activity… but yes, you can punch bad guys with me.”
And with Damian it’s even more complicated but in simplest terms Bruce and Dick look at Damian and go, “hey kid, you seem like you have some issues and a weird moral compass. Do you know what makes me feel better? Punching bad guys.”
Like shit bruce I’m no expert but maybe some talk therapy or grief counselling might help. you cant just "punch bad guys to cope with your feelings" your way out of this one
