GROUNDING AND CENTERING

grounding in a spiritual sense is the practice of connecting to the environment around you and releasing unwanted energies. centering is the act of clearing your mind to focus on the task at hand.

you may feel "out of balance" and unable to concentrate sometimes, this can be a sign that you need to practice grounding and centering. below i will list some ways to practice spiritual grounding and centering, but feel free to come up with your own ways as well!

note that the correspondences listed at the end are my personal correspondences, you may have different ones and thats okay!

GROUNDING AND CENTERING WITH BREATH

breathe in and out slowly, focus on the way that it feels. visualize (or alternatively, if you cant visualize, just think of) the unwanted energies and thoughts leaving you with each breath out and the thoughts of the task at hand coming in with each breath in

GROUNDING AND CENTERING WITH MEDITATION

try meditating and clearing your mind of all unwanted thoughts, focusing fully on whatever you need to be focused on. focus on the environment around you. what do you hear? what do you smell? what do you see, if your eyes are open? if you have trouble with meditation, there are guided ones online

GROUNDING AND CENTERING WITH VISUALIZING

try visualizing (or thinking about if you cant visualize) all the unwanted energies leaving you and you connecting fully to the environment. you can do this in many ways, but a common way is to visualize ( / think of) breathing out the energy for the release and roots connecting you to the ground for the connection. visualize ( / think of) the wanted thoughts and energies coming in

ENTITY AND DEITY ETIQUETTE

there are some important principles to follow when working with any entity or deity, and this post is going to underline those major points

keep in mind that each entity and deity is going to have different preferences for interaction, so its always a good idea to think about your relationship with that specific entity or deity and what that entails

RESPECT

respect any entity or deity you choose to have any form of relationship with, whether that be worship or work. you would not want to work with someone who disrespects you, so do not assume an entity or deity would want to work with someone who disrespects them

this includes things like treating them with general respect, respecting their time and boundaries, following your word, etc... just generally being respectful of the other being you are interacting with

MAKE THINGS WORTH THEIR TIME

do not constantly ask them for help with spells with nothing offered in return, you should provide an offering or devotional act of some kind if they agree to help you with something. an example could be requesting help with a spell and promising an offering in return (make sure to follow through), you could say something like "(name/title), i am requesting your assistance with (spell), and if granted i am prepared to offer you (thing), thank you for your consideration"

SET ENTITY HOUSE RULES

this is mostly for spirits and other entities as opposed to deities, but you should set house rules so they have clear expectations of what to do and what not to do. this both protects you as well as gives them clear expectations of what behaviors are and are not okay

ITS OK TO SAY NO RESPECTFULLY

saying no to a deity or entity (or an entity or deity saying no to you) is perfectly okay, as long as its done so respectfully. a way to respectfully say no could be "i appreciate your interest in working with me, but i am not interested because (reason, eg. i already work with x amount of entities/deities, i do not have the time right now, etc.)"

PUT IN EFFORT

put in effort to the relationship you are building with this deity or entity just like you would with another person. this means dedicate time to them fairly often, even if its as simple as glancing at an altar or giving a small offering

ADDRESSING A DEITY

when you speak to a deity, its a good idea to address them by their name. this can be done formally, or more casually. a formal approach may look like "(name), ruler of (xyz), (and/or epithets)", while a casual approach may look more like "lord/lady (name)", an epithet, or simply their name. try to find out what the deity youre honoring would want from you and do what you think would be best

UNDOING SPELLS

there are many different ways to undo a spell, i will go over a few in this post. like everything in witchcraft, do what works for you. these are just some ideas!

PERFORM THE SPELL BACKWARDS

gather the original ingredients of the spell and do whatever you originally did in the reverse order. for example, if you drew a sigil, draw it backwards with the opposite intentions

PERFORM A NULLIFICATION SPELL

perform a spell with the intent of nullifying your original spell. gather any ingredients you think would be beneficial for this, personally i think cleansing and banishing ingredients would be beneficial, but you should use what feels right to you, and perform a spell with the intent of nullification of the original spell

PHYSICALLY UNDO THE ORIGINAL SPELL

if the spell was something such as a jar spell, you can physically undo it with the intent of undoing it magically as well. i would also use some cleansing method afterwards to help the nullification, but its up to you

THE MORRIGAN

note that most of this will be based off of my own experience as someone who works with her, but i will also include traditional information as well!

DOMAINS AND ATTRIBUTES

the morrigan is a goddess of war / battle, sovereingty, death, and fate

some see the morrigan as a trinity of three sisters, others see her as a single goddess with three aspects. neither way is incorrect as the mythology is unclear based on what ive read. personally i view her as a single goddess with three aspects as opposed to three sisters under a single name

the morrigan is a shapeshifter, taking many forms in her mythology. a common form taken by her is that of a crow or a raven, other forms include that of an eel, wolf, and heifer. this is not a complete list, i would advise reading the mythology of the morrigan to learn more about her if you intend to worship or work with her. it details her other forms as well as general mythology surrounding her

PROTECTION

protection is an important skill for any practitioner to know because it helps protect you from negative energies, entities, intentions, etc. ill go over some different forms and items for protection in this post

WARDS

wards are energetic fields that prevent unwanted energies, entities, intentions, etc. from coming into your space. they can be cast around yourself or a space. warding can be done in several ways, detailed below

visualization and intent - usually done by visualizing a barrier with the intent of protection

salt - sprinkle salt around your space with the intent of protection, make sure to be safe if you have pets, salt may harm animals if they consume it

crystals - use protective crystals around yourself or your space

herbs - use protective herbs around yourself or your space, you could also make an herbal spray for protection

objects - you can have an object be the "source" of the ward and frequently recharge this object with intent, you could get an object you associate with protection or that has protective properties (such as a plant with protective correspondences) and use this as the source of your ward

ENCHANTED ITEMS

you can enchant an item with intent (in this case, protection) and keep it in your space or wear it

personally, i like to enchant jewelry with intent and wear it with me daily or when i want to utilize its specific abilities!

i will make a more in-depth post on how to enchant things, but you can use intent and visualization, crystals, herbs, or ask for help from a deity or entity you work with

DEITIES AND ENTITIES

you can call upon a deity or entity for protection, such as with a prayer or a direct request

note that if you are doing this they may want an offering in return. relationships in witchcraft are often somewhat transactional (eg. giving energy in exchange for a spell, giving an offering to an entity in exchange for help with your craft, etc.), so i would advise having something to offer them in exchange for their protection

PROTECTION SIGILS

protection sigils are sigils drawn with the intent of protection, there are sigil making charts online or you can simply draw from your intuition, there is no wrong way to make a sigil as long as the intent is there!

i will make a more in-depth post on sigil making and link it here soon

PROTECTION JARS

you can make a protection jar by including items you associate with protection, some ideas for what to include are herbs, small crystals, or sigils

PROTECTION CANDLES

you can make a candle spell and burn it for protection, i would advise choosing a candle in a color you associate with protection and dressing it or surrounding it with herbs you associate with protection. you could also carve a protection sigil into the candle before burning it!

PROTECTION ITEMS

below is a non-exhaustive list of items i associate with protection, your associations may be different and thats completely okay! use whatever association works for you, this is just based off of my personal associations and correspondences with these items

MAGIC SAFETY

magic safety is an important thing to know, so this post will cover both mundane and magical safety tips that you should always follow while practicing your craft! if i forgot to add anything to this list, feel free to reblog and add it on!

MUNDANE SAFETY

never burn anything you arent 100% sure is safe to be burned. remember that things give off fumes when burned, and if these fumes would be unsafe to breathe in, please dont burn the item

never leave any flame unattended, always have a way to put out the fire nearby if needed. make sure anything you are burning things in is fire-safe, and burn things in a well-ventilated space

make sure any crystal you are putting in water is water safe, some become toxic in water. salt and sunlight can also harm certain crystals

never leave salt in nature, it can harm animals and plants. in general, make sure anything you leave in nature is safe for the wildlife that lives there

never consume essential oils, and please do your research to make sure any that you use are skin-safe

never use witchcraft as a replacement for medical help. if you want to do a health spell, thats great! please also meet the spell halfway by seeking medical help

make sure any herbs or plants you are eating are safe to eat, and make sure they are safe to combine

MAGICAL SAFETY

always be respectful when interacting with entities or deities. if you allow a spirit into your house, its a good idea to set "house rules" and have the spirit agree to them

never cast a spell you cant undo, and always be sure of the outcomes of spells before you do them. in general, assume every spell you cast will work as intended

if you practice baneful magic, try not to use anything tied to you in your spells. this could have the spell be tied back onto you in some way and harm you as well

never give out your protection spells, this will give people the ways around them if they wish to harm you

always have proper protections up when practicing magic, this will lessen the chances of anything unwanted happening or any unwanted entities coming through

always know how to banish anything you work with

if you are mentally ill, know when something is intuition vs when something is disordered thinking. i cant elaborate on this too much, as everyones situation is different, but i can give an example. for example, if you have the assumption that everyone hates you, try to evaluate where this actually comes from. note that not all cases of disordered thinking will be this obvious and it is not always easy to recognize when something is disordered thinking

SPIRITUAL RED FLAGS

watch out for anything that pushes an ideology or belief set onto you, the most common example i see of this is judging everyone by the wiccan standards of doing things

please be aware of cult red flags when joining any kind of spiritual group. some red flags include an us vs them, or insiders vs "outsiders" mentality, having a leader resistant to criticism, demanding money, time, devotion, etc., isolating you from friends and family, and other things of this nature. for more detail, look into the BITE model

if the source or individual in question claims using things from closed practices while not being a part of that practice is okay, this is a red flag. same for claiming open practices are closed

look out for anything that claims you shouldnt use medication if youre a practitioner, that you cant practice the craft while being mentally ill, disabled, chronically ill, etc. or anything of the sort

CLEANSING

Cleansing is the act of clearing your space of energy, depending on your belief, you may view this as a removal of all energy or only negative energy. Personally I view it as a removal of all energy, but neither belief is wrong.

Cleansing is important because over time energy starts to accumulate in a space. Cleansing is a way to release this energy and renew the space to be filled with new, more positive energy and intent.

You can cleanse yourself, items, or spaces. All of these things are important and I will discuss them further in this post. If you are cleansing an item, make sure the cleansing method you choose is safe for the item. For example, do not cleanse a non-water safe crystal with water.

If you are cleansing a space, such as a room or house, I would advise opening doors and/or windows to give the negative energy a place to go. If you cannot do this, it's okay. I just find that it helps me.

WHEN TO CLEANSE

I cleanse before casting protection spells or warding, or whenever the energy of the space feels off. For items, I cleanse them whenever I feel like they need it or whenever I am going to use them for a spell or ritual, such as enchanting.

This is really up to your own discretion, though. Whenever you feel it is needed, you should cleanse. Trust your intuition.

SMOKE CLEANSING

Smoke cleansing is any cleansing involving smoke, this can be candle smoke, incense smoke, or smoke from burning herbs.

To smoke cleanse, take the item you are cleansing with and light it, let the smoke cover whatever you are cleansing and visualize it carrying away the energy. If you cannot visualize, have the intent of cleansing in mind. Intent works as a replacement for visualization.

If you are going to burn herbs, make sure they are safe to be burned.

If you are going to smoke cleanse, please make sure the item you are using to smoke cleanse is not from a closed practice. I see many people using white sage or palo santo to smoke cleanse, and these items are from closed practices.

Also, please do not refer to smoke cleansing as smudging unless you are Indigenous and practicing smudging! They are different things, smudging is a type of smoke cleansing, but not all smoke cleansing is smudging. Smudging is a closed practice to Indigenous Americans.

WATER CLEANSING

Water cleansing refers to any method of cleansing involving water. This is my preferred method, but everyone will have a different preference.

How I cleanse with water is by making a spray with (water safe) crystals in it and spraying it around whatever I intend to cleanse. The crystals I use are clear quartz and amethyst, although if you want to try this method you can use different crystals, just make sure they're water safe. You can also include herbs.

Other ways to cleanse with water include running an item under water or submerging an item in water.

If you are cleansing crystals with water, make sure they are water safe. Some crystals become toxic or dissolve when exposed to water.

SUN/MOON CLEANSING

The sun or moon can be used to cleanse items by leaving them out with intent. This can also be used to charge them with a certain intention, especially aligning with the correspondences of the sun or the moon phase that is out when you leave your object out.

If you are going to sun cleanse crystals, make sure they are sun safe. Certain crystals fade in the sun.

SOUND CLEANSING

Sound cleansing can be done by clapping, ringing bells, ringing windchimes, or playing music with intent. Any form of sound will work. You could even speak out your intentions of cleansing with the intent of this driving out the energies.

SALT CLEANSING

Salt cleansing can be done by submerging an object in salt, making a salt water spray, or any other method using salt.

Please do not put salt in nature, it can harm plants and animals.

Make sure any items you are cleansing will not react badly with the salt.

EARTH CLEANSING

You can bury an item with the intent of cleansing it, submerge it in cleansing herbs, cleanse using crystals with cleansing properties, or any other method using nature.

Make sure any item you are burying is safe for the environment.

RITUAL SHOWERS OR BATHS

To cleanse yourself, you can take a shower or bath with intent. You can use bath salts, salt scrubs, or herbs in your bath/shower with the intent of cleansing, buy a soap with a scent or ingredients you associate with cleansing (for example, a soap with a lavender scent), burn incense while you shower or bathe, or any other method of making the shower or bath cleansing for you.

WHAT TO DO AFTER CLEANSING

After cleansing, I personally like to fill the space or item with my intent, cast protection spells, and ward. This is important because it helps prevent the space or item from filling up with negative energy so quickly, keeps the positive energy and intent in, and protects you, your space, or your item.
