I wish all Muslims a Happy Eid-Al-Adha. The haj pilgrimage constitutes one of the five pillars of Islam enjoined upon Muslims and is performed in Mecca, the holiest site of Islam. Covid-19 has affected so many aspects of our lives and for many Muslims, especially the elderly, who have been looking forward to perform this one act of faith in their lifetime, it’s particularly wrenching as they could not perform the Haj two years in a row. They understand that it’s for health and safety reasons but it’s still painful. Other than the pilgrimage, Muslims experienced restrictions on Friday and Two Eids prayers. They have been admirable in complying with these restrictions peacefully although it’s been difficult. We can be proud that as a community we have been contributing our part in keeping our countries safe for everyone during this very difficult period. This is completely in keeping with the spirit of Islam and, in particular, the Haj which is all about sacrifice and love for peace and humanity. The Haj is the greatest social leveller, as the rich and the poor have to perform the same rituals and adorn the same simple garments. Also a portion of the meat from animals that we sacrifice, will be distributed to the needy reminding us of our duty to those who are less privileged. As we celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha tomorrow with our loved ones, it’s also a time for us to strengthen our ties and forgive each other.
