The devastating difference between how much time it takes to write something vs how fast people read it lol

please kill this idea that just because a female character is not physically strong and does not physically fight that her very existence is, by default, a sexist portrayal of women in media.

the “damsel in distress” trope is only harmful when that aspect of the character is all there is to the character. if the writers give attention to her backstory, her feelings, her struggles, and her development, then she’s not a faceless prop just being used for male empowerment. she’s a person. a person who happens to not fight.

there’s nothing wrong with that. and to push this notion that this is somehow bad and wrong and that women should never need saving, even in war and crime fiction, is ludicrous. it swings the pendulum too far in the other direction and creates the problem of only showcasing women who are physically fit, or butch, or masculine.

people come in all shapes, sizes, temperaments, and ideologies. stop worrying about stupid tropes and focus that energy on questioning whether or not a character is actually well-written and cared for by the author instead.

I have one of those robot vacuums but there's a mirror in the house low enough to the ground that the lidar scanner can see a nonexistent room in the reflection so on the navigation map it's generated I have a room that doesn't exist that I have to forbid the vacuum from entering.

Thanks for responding! I was feeling like the odd one out with everyone posting their writing playlists. I like how you mentioned the "volume" of a scene. Like how am I supposed to hear my characters whisper to each other in my head when there's music playing? And some scenes have a frantic pace, or a mellow pace, and if the tempo of the music doesn't match that it would throw me off. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Am I the only writer who doesn't like to listen to music while writing? It seems like everyone else has a collection of playlists to write to. It's weird, because practically every other minute of my life I've got headphones on to listen to something, but not while writing. Maybe it's because I'm a singer, so any song with lyrics I'm tempted to sing along, which is the ultimate distraction. I thought the solution would be classical music. I have a lot of movie and video game soundtracks, but even those are distracting to me.

Music is just so emotionally specific, and if the vibes don't match the scene I'm writing, it throws me off. I feel like I'd spend half my time finding just the right song, then I'd get sick of it because I'm not a fast writer. I also don't really want my favorite songs to become associated with moments of frustrating writer's block forever more. I prefer total silence, but have sometimes settled for white noise videos like "wind in the trees" or "afternoon rainstorm" to drown out more annoying sounds like construction next door. I've thought of getting some really good ear plugs to ensure silence no matter where I am.

Are there any other writers out there who crave pure silence while you're working?

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

I think game design is still very much in its infancy. We need to get to 100 years of video game before any of this starts to make sense

my 8 year old has some emotional regulation difficulties, and I've done my best to help him with those.

unrelated, I gave him a shovel a couple of days ago and told him to go have fun in the field because I was tired.

He suddenly seemed happier, having less trouble breathing through disappointment and just being generally all around more cheerful and able to focus in school better. Sure, my partner had to pull him out of a six foot by three foot hole today, but he was stoked about it!
