obsessed w how bitter and upset duke is w Bruce in this arc. and he has every right to be! he knew Bruce almost personally at that point, and his parents were joker gassed in a recreation of the wayne murders in an effort to get to batman. they were collateral damage and duke had been suffering pretty much alone as a result. his whole ideology is that robin doesn't need batman but on a more personal scale, you can see why he thinks that! when he needed Bruce he wasn't there, when he needed batman he wasn't there either. And he'll fret like he didn't care like it didn't matter but it DID
Tumblr media
Ik I talk abt this panel often but that's bcs KTZZZZ ITS SO CRUCIAL TO DUKES CHARACTER!! He becomes completely self reliant, isolates himself he can't wait on batman to save the city, can't wait on batman to find his parents or wait on batman to save him, he's all he could rely on, and that self-reliance later grew into an almost cynical worldview. it's why his whole "emphasis on the word 'we'" thing at the we of WAR meant so much. he had hope in not just his own beliefs but in others' as well.
ANDDD it's why his and bruce's dynamic drives me up a wall but that's another post for another time..

Will never get over how hilarious the accidental lesbian coding of the koncass "romance" arc was in Batgirl. Like Cass had a 'friend break up' with Steph and immediately the very next issue began observing couples on the street and thinking more about romantic love and whether she should try it and started asking questions and realised that most men were gross actually but Superboy seems kind of OK so she should do the whole kissing and dating thing now right? So she goes all the way to Kansas to try it out and then they fight a rock monster and she's like "Hang on a second I think I'm just lonely and looking for a friend since I lost Steph. I don't think I have any romantic feelings for you at all actually." and they agree to be friends and it's a happy ending and she doesn't for one second analyze the fact that losing her relationship with Stephanie made her want to replace it with a romantic partner.
And then when Steph dies Cass monologues to us about what the funeral was like and says how Steph was her first friend while everyone else is more like family and "Stephanie was... I uh. I can't talk about her now. Is that normal?" (which yes is perfectly normal grief but also the confusion about what exactly separates Steph from the rest of the batfamily and makes her Cass's "first friend" is Something). She then goes on to fantasize twice about Steph swooping in to save her and carrying her away from danger while she's dying. The second time Steph literally bridal carries her in her arms.
Tumblr media
Cass will ignore all of this of course and then go on to pat herself on the back when a normal civilian man asks her out for coffee. She declines obviously because she's too busy superheroing but the fact that he asked means she's getting an A+ in the social skills submodule of Romance. She never needs to say yes to any of these of course just the fact that they like her means she's doing a good job and that's all she needs! Anyways time to stare into Steph's eyes and analyze every aspect of what she sees there. As besties.

What he’s done for me? What, like staring at him as if watching an apparition? Did Dick Grayson spend long hours mourning at the memorial of the good soldier? What a joke. Dick Grayson couldn’t stop Bruce taking Robin from him, and he sure as hell couldn’t stop Bruce giving it away two, three, four more times after that.
Still, Dick looks at him, and it’s like Jason’s thirteen again, barely four feet tall and feeling like he was standing beside a star, caught in its gaze. Dick’s eyes are the same, even so many years later. I know something you don’t know, they say.

Thomas family dinners, everything from lazy meals on TV trays when everyone is too tired to cook to extended family meals for holidays, memories stocked to the brim with laughter filled kitchens and food made with love, dinners of hope and recovery and mourning and joy
duke who feels awkward and alone even surrounded by other bats because where is the warmth and love? duke who still now feels like an outsider because he is reminded that this is not his family, that his family may never come back
Thomas family dinners in the recovery process, the tentative poking around each other's new found traumas turning into a new familiarity, a new kind of living, a living that has his fellow ex robins and his parents and some of his fellow bats all milling around cups of kool aid in hand as his dad regals a gaggle of teens with his stories
a warm place where laughter echoes on the walls

I hate Bruce's "I don't kill because once I start, I wouldn't be able to stop"
Like I simply do not buy it. Murder is not a potato chip Bruce. I think he is full of shit and a messy bitch who lives for the drama. I am certain Bruce has some kind of valid reason for not killing, but I don't believe that this is it.

I don't believe Duke Thomas and Luke Fox have every actually interacted in canon. Despite that, I often see them being portrayed as having this close mentor relationship in fandom or wfa. Yes there is a lot of cool potential to explore there, but it's not the established relationship that so many posts pretend it is.
But his mentor is Jefferson Pierce! Black Lightning! He has that mentorship relationship that people try to fit Luke into. Not only were they in a team together, but Jefferson (and Lady Shiva) made extra attempts to bring Duke under his wing and look out for his well-being. I get the impression that Duke is automatically paired with Batwing in fan creations because they are both Black—but so is Black Lightning and he has had actual interactions with Duke!
Also? Within the family, Duke is closest with Cass! They are siblings! And they act like it. They built such a strong relationship while in the Outsiders, and as they were obeying and disobeying orders, they never waivered in their support for each other. Second to Cass, he has wonderful team ups with Bruce, and quickly wormed his way into Damian's trust. Though not as established, Duke's interactions with Dick and Jason also give a foundational idea of their dynamics.
I just want to see him actually interacting with his canon friends okay.
