‘Try not to get lost again,’ Thorin smiled.

‘I’ll try my chest – best! I’ll try my best!’ Bilbo could have kicked himself over the blunder, but as it turned out he didn’t have to.

Thorin’s face transformed from an infuriatingly knowing smirk into a look of panic. He reached out with a hand, stepping forward quickly, ‘Bilbo, look out!’

And there's nothing there that prevents me from claiming a member of the Company as my treasure." Joking was better than admitting anything. Bilbo could be just as stubborn, and he's had enough and a cough for that stupidly gorgeous dwarf king. "Because Balin is either a wicked matchmaker or losing his touch."

Fíli and Kíli are actually Legolas' time-traveling love children from the future. This changes everything.

Notes: This fic is entirely crack treated seriously, and I adore it. Although I’m not totally sold on the ending the rest of it is just *chef’s kiss*. Btw gigolas and Aragorn/Legolas centric. Not a very heavy read but still really fun. Like I said, it’s crack.

A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes by diemarysues

Bilbo Baggins has been plagued with dreams for some months, always filled with the same stranger: big hands, strong arms, dark hair. It seems a mystery until he figures that it is a Dwarf, though this only narrows down his search to every Dwarf in Erebor.

When he overhears mention of a special party in the Mountain he wishes briefly that he can attend. But that's ridiculous. He's a Hobbit, not a Dwarf.

Turns out that's not a problem when magic is involved.

Notes: I read this fic pretty recently and as the summary kind of says, it’s a Cinderella au. I adore this fic so much and was an instant bookmark. I’m pretty particular when it comes to bookmarking so yeahhhhh

Notes: In my experience it’s hard to find really good fairytale au’s, especially Beauty and the Beast. Like, the goal is for the relationship to not be toxic right guys..? Still, this fic manages to blow me away every time I read it. This is a barduil fic and you may not be into that right now but I still recommend giving it a shot. Especially if you’re into thilbo, gigolas, and the like. It’s truly one of my favorites.

Rearrange by smilebackwards

Prince Fili’s betrothal to the elf prince of Mirkwood causes Gimli many problems, not least of which, he’s beginning to strongly suspect that Legolas may be his One.

Notes: I just can’t with this fic, it hits you right in the feels and never stops. It’s so fluffy but like also angsty (like any good fic), and the endingggg. And Filiiiiii. I feel like a lot of authors struggle with writing dwarves, Fili and Kili specifically, because they’re not sure how far to take their childishness. For this environment I think Fili was done particularly well, even if it’s not how I would view him in other situations. Btw gigolas.

Notes: This is actually the fic that I’m reading right now (and loving, obviously), but I’m sold on it already so I didn’t want to have to wait to get this rec out to you. Also like, once I do this I’ve got nothing else I’ve gotta get done, so that’s epic. It’s thilbo centric and modern day au with secretive Thorin, and Smaug has already been taken care of so that’s not a second hand stresser. It’s just lovely overall with the way it present all of the company and Frerin is alive, which is always nice. And mini Fili and Kili. Bro I’m in so deep with this fic, but that’s how it goes ig, lmao.

The heading is misleading… these won’t all be fluffy, but I digress. This time there are ten because they’re shorter in general. By one shot I mean like 2000-10000 words. I’ll prbly do a two shot rec (lmao, are they actually called that?) for works that are like 10,000 to like 20,000 words, cause like imma make a novel length one and novlet ones soooooo yeah. Notes: This fic is the one I’ve read most recently (in the past ten minutes) and I love it so much. Honestly, it’s amazing. Well written, not drawn out, playful, just *chef’s kiss* amazing. Thilbo.

Notes: Lmao, this fic gets me every time. It’s pretty much crack but not as in it’s got crazy stuff, it’s just pure humor and I adore it. I’m not usually huge on oc’s, but the mc one specifically got me. He is a representation of the whole fandom when faced with Bilbo and Thorin, let’s be real.

The Latest Dream I Ever Dreamed On the Cold Hill’s Side by acaramelmacchiato

Notes: This is (obvi) a barduil fic, and it’s one of the first I read so it’s got a place close to my heart. It’s short and sweet and lovely and doesn’t feel ooc at all. Just read it, you won’t regret it, I promise you.

Notes: This fic touches my heart. I’m soft for begrudgingly accepting Gloin. Not that he shouldn’t accept gigolas’s relationship, but the idea that he’s putting on a gruff front makes me smile.

A Hobbit and His Ink (But Not How You Think) by authoressjean

Fili and Kili demand to know what it is and make his life a pain on the journey to Erebor when he refuses to tell them.

Thorin is also interested, but then again, he's found himself more interested in their burglar than he'd originally thought he would be. For reasons his nephews most certainly aren't.

Who can blame him? A hobbit with a mysterious tattoo is more than intriguing, it's downright attractive.

Notes: This fic is a classic I think. In world but very individual too. I’ve yet to see any other fics following this idea, let alone executing it as well. Wonderful read. Thilbo.

Alone Is A Word Not Meant For You by authoressjean

So when Kili drags them into the bookstore to look for children's literature author Mr. Baggins' new book, and they find the author himself reading his latest, Thorin isn't expecting anything beyond maybe making his nephews a little happier.

He certainly isn't expecting to find something for himself but he may have done just that.

Notes: This fic almost made me sob. Just bringing back memories and feels. Read it if you’re up for some stuff to hit you straight in the heart. Pre-slash btw. Thilbo.

The Naming of Hobbits by Margo_Kim

Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.

Notes: Ahdkdkndfjk, I can’t with this fic. It’s hilarious and so well written. If you’ve been here for a while you’ve probably read it, but I had to rec it anyhow. Thilbo.

I would pretty much like it form the point of view of Dis, who just arrived to Erebor to take care of her boys (brother included) and sees what a mess Thorin's made of everything.

His Highness is lucky he's cute, really.

Nori really isn't sure why Ori thinks he can handle a baby. Fortunately, he can always make Dwalin help him, or else.

Notes: Nwalin focused, with a side of Fiori and Thilbo. I can't ever decide if I like Dwalin/Nori or Dwalin/Ori more. Maybe we should have a vote... But either way, I love this fic, especially since it highlights two characters that don't typically get the limelight (also baby dwarrow).

Trouble with Faces by Resacon1990

Notes: This one isn't as well known as some of the others on the list, but it's so soft and I adore every bit of it.

“It’s got such a presence to it, even from a distance,” Bilbo says softly, and there’s a general murmur of awed agreement from the others. “Why, in all my fifty years, I never thought I’d see such a thing, and we haven’t even arrived yet!”

Thorin’s sword hits the ground with a clatter, and Balin chokes on his pipe.

The hobbit doesn’t look at Thorin, too busy thumping Balin on the back. Once the dwarf seems able to breathe again, he looks up, to find thirteen wide pairs of eyes fixed on him.

“What?” he says defensively, though he’s not sure what he’s defending.

“You’re how old?” Kíli squeaks.

Bilbo frowns at the young dwarf. “I’m fifty years old. Well, fifty-one, come springtime. Though it is not very polite to ask someone their age so bluntly,” he tells him primly.

Fíli makes a choked sound, and Nori lets out a vicious string of swears in Khuzdul.

Notes: CLASSIC ALERT. All I can really say about this fic is that if you haven't read it, that's a crime, and you must. This fic is a gen-you-ine staple, and I adore it. Thilbo.

All That Shine as Moonstone Leave a Discernible Mark by kay_cricketed

After the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin Oakenshield is determined to secure Bilbo's place in the world, even if he must make him a husband and a widower in the same hour to do so.

Notes: This one's simultaneously funny and saddd. All the feels, especially the faith Thorin has in Bilbo (this is Thilbo btw). Everything ends up fine, but it still destroys me.

To Choose a Consort by Thevaen

''You really ought to look more interested, or at least pretend.'' Bilbo started, giving the Dwarf a slap against his arm at the look he received. ''And stop being such a child.'' Thorin smiled. ''They don't know me the way you do.'' A flutter exploded in the Hobbit's chest at the words. ''I doubt if there's anyone who is quite so skilled at interpreting expressions as you Master Baggins.''

Thorin had to choose a consort. He knew that, and he also knew he didn't want a consort that was not the Hobbit. He doesn't, and instead stubbornly waits for a sign that the Hobbit himself would be willing to be such. Bilbo in turn, knew he was more than a little envious of those that got the chance to present themselves in front of the Dwarven King, and that he was more than a little relieved when time after time, they were kindly rejected. He also knew that if he was being really honest, he really wanted to take on the spot himself.

Notes: This one's another classic and I love it too much to handle sometimes. The pining is lovely and it ends up so happily, and I just love it so much.

The Fine Print by airebellah

It had been many years since Bilbo had seen his Dwarves. Driven by his loneliness and nostalgia, one night he decided to re-read the contract he had signed so many years ago, hoping to find catharsis. Instead, what he found was burning rage at all the ridiculous clauses the Dwarves had slipped in without his notice. In the end, Bilbo knew there was only one thing to do. He would travel to Erebor, and have very specific words with the King.

Notes: LMAO, this fic tho... It's just hilarious, and so very Bilbo. I love it so much, you guys have no idea.

Notes: This one is so soft and fluffy, and Elrond (we love Elrond here) being knowledgable about Hobbit culture is such a vibe and we love that. Thilbo.

Ultimate Gigolas

Long time no see, ey? Well, I'm back... at least for now, but I'm very excited to deliver this rec list! You all know that I'm a sucker for Barduil and Thilbo, but gigolas just hits different ya know? I tried to assemble a list of fandom classics as well as some lesser known ones that you really need to check out.

I Walked with You (Once Upon a Dream) by The_Dwelf

Kori is just a regular Dwarf, except, he isn't. He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending.

Notes: I would call this fic a lesser known classic. I've read it more than once (I've read most of these more than once) and it never fails to entertain. Maybe it's not my absolute favorite, but it's definitely a must read.

On the Origin of Half-Elves by Lumeleo

Of course, even when they start to get along, things aren't necessarily easy when rumours from the Misty Mountains make Legolas ride out to look for his lost brother... and ends up with a party of dwarves following him, because you can't ever have just one dwarf.

Now if only he can get through the adventure without any angry relatives taking an axe to his vulnerable parts.

Notes: This story is sweet. I really like Legolas and Gimli's relationship, but if I'm being honest I typically read it for the other (if you've read it you know the one I mean) relationship. Love this fic a lot (as well as the series that it folds into).

Grilka likes talking to the elf, despite his grief. Somehow it feels like talking to an old friend.

Notes: This one is similar to the first one, but I like how the ending feels different and unique. These sorts of fics always leave me in so much pain, but only the good kind of course.

Notes: I'm an intense sucker for a good pirate fic. While the style of this fic means that I'm not constantly rereading it, it's lovely to pick up again and relearn about this different world and its twists and turns.

My god it's been a while, several months in fact. (Also.. there are a lot more of you than there were before... wow).

This is based on an ask (@bacchaotic). They asked for baby Frodo and/or Fili and Kili bagginsheild fics, there weren't many other parameters than that, but I tried my best... even though I strayed a little from the prompt.

Really, he's quite content to be courted by Thorin, who has no mark at all.

Kíli has no mark, either, until they come to Mirkwood, and things get needlessly complicated. Because of course elves do things yet another way, as though Bilbo didn't have enough of a headache already.

Of course, there's also the ultimate question: how to tell about your pregnancy to a partner who is not only gold-mad, but also doesn't believe in the existence of illegitimate children?

An Unexpected Addition by karategal

Bard learnt quite a lot about the mysterious Thranduil Oropherion from the gossiping mothers with children at the school.

Thranduil, a legendary dancer, had opened up the Greenwood Academy of Dance, and people had flocked to it. He used to hold lessons personally, running master classes and beginners classes alike. But five years ago there had been a fire at the academy – a bad one, Bard remembered hearing about it. By some miracle there had been no fatalities and the school had been quickly rebuilt.

But no one had seen so much as a glimpse of Thranduil since.

Notes: This fic hurts so good. Like Sigrid and Legolas, just ugh, it's so good. I don't have a whole lot more to say, just go fucking read it and love it. Barduil. Modern au!

But they'll get through it, eventually. Though how many tears and broken hearts and arguments there'll in the meantime, Mahal only knows.

And maybe, just maybe, they'll be closer at the end of it.

Notes: This fic is a classic. If you've been reading thilbo for a while I'd be surprised if you haven't already read this one, but in case you haven't you should be aware that this is probably my favorite modern au. It features Sam/Frodo and is just perfect in all the ways. I adore it so much and think it's more deserving of love and adoration then I am. Just read it.

When it comes down to it, the world of ao3 and its other fan fiction counterparts can be a confusing place to navigate, especially for us Tolkien fans, so I have taken it upon myself to create this one stop destination for a starter pack of fan fiction (specifically queer) for the beginners in this world to enjoy! Notes: Let’s be real, if you’ve been in this particular circle of hell you’ve most definitely read this fic, but don't hate me for recing it first. It’s a lovely thilbo and gigolas combo that just has all the feels. Ofc there are other ships, but they’re all written beautifully. If you’re new to gigolas or thilbo you *must* read this fic. It’s practically mandatory, and if you don’t read it now you’ll read it later and regret not reading it sooner. I swear to Yavanna, just read it!

2. Love Always, Yours Forever by butterflyslinky

Notes: This fic is a personal favorite of mine. You might even call it a guilty pleasure of sorts. While it does feel kinda cracky at the beginning (not that I mind), it'll have you sobbing by the end. I revisit this fic almost every other week. BTW it's gigolas and kiliel, and there might be a smudge of bagginsheild, but not enough for it to be mentioned in the tags.

3. I Can See You Through the Flames by LittleLynn

When Bard Bowman manages to get a job tutoring a young boy at Mirkwood Hall, he and his children move to the strange and dark estate. It does not take long for him to realise that there is something hiding amidst its walls and behind the blank mask of its mysterious lord. Despite his gut warnings that something is not as it seems, he still cannot help the foolish way that he falls for his lord and employer.

Notes: I adore this fic and I'll gush about it in just a sec, but first things first. This fic is barduil centric (bard/thranduil) and I know that that (that being Thranduil) isn't everybody's cup of tea, but I promise that if this fic doesn't make you adore him, nothing will. I personally consider barduil to be one of my Tolkien otps (up there w/thilbo and gigolas), so please, if you don't like it just move on. But.... if you're open to the idea I highly recommend this fic as an amazing starting point. Features Frerin, Thorin, Dis and them a little bit, and tiny Legolas is magnificent. It's written based upon some book, but it's totally readable without having read it. Jane Eyre, I think.

4. Smell the Sea and Feel the Sky by Thorinsmut

Captain Dwalin - a privateer for the Crown - is in love with beautiful, sweet, innocent Lady Norine.

His main rival (whom he is most definitely not in lust with) is the cockiest little man he ever met - Captain Vulpes, a pirate with a fast mongrel of a ship and a bad habit of stealing his targets out from under his nose.

...it's going to take him a while to realize they're the same genderfluid person.

Notes: Bear with me on this one, but it's a deep au (if you haven't caught on yet, I'm fond of AU's). This one has Nori/Dwailin and is a Pirate!Au with genderfluid!Nori which, especially since I'm genderfluid, I adore. Tbh this is one of my favorite fics, especially for a ship I usually only do as a side pairing. It's written beautifully, although it's a little bit more on the mature side so if heavy themes revolving sexual content aren't you're thing, I might advise you to go for one of the other fics on this list first. But seriously, this is amazing in all of the ways.

5. An Unexpected Addition by karategal

Notes: This one has to be my absolute favorite "Frodo comes to Erebor fic", and let me tell you that there are a shitload of them (not that I'm really complaining). It's just perfectly written and characterized and the thilbo is magnificent. And just asifehihifhgh I can'tttt. It's so good. At this point I don't think I need to say much, but this is the perfect start for reading thilbo and no one can convince me otherwise.

A couple more things as this rec list comes to a close. I hope these five fits do well to start you on your gay Tolkien journey, but be forewarned, Tolkien fanfics are almost always novels. Right now that might now be your thing, if you've read fics before and are coming from another fandom, but I promise you if you give the long ones a chance they'll sway you. I used to only go for one shots but now I read these novel length stories like they're nothing. When it's written well long stories are the best. That's all for now ig, see ya tomorrow!
