I was gonna try to write today maybe but then in the process of looking at Aki's glams realized that the folder I thought was my redundant mod folder was actually my penumbra folder and downloading back from my gdrive (where I uploaded it before deleting) and putting back in the right place made the mod show up but penumbra couldn't read the files so then I spent like. 3+hrs going and redownloading every mod that still existed and finding hopeful replacements for ones that don't (over 100 mods downloaded in total fbdnsnddj) and then sorting them back into folders in the penumbra interface so I could find shit again
Luckily, somehow, penumbra did remember what mods were on in what collections and most of the correct settings on those mods. So I don't have several more hours of work ahead of me. But man was that exhausting.

🌶️ whats the Hot Take on fire emblem or ffxiv!!
Oh boy. I'll go with Fire Emblem since I've played it more recently. Let me just put on this metaphorical beekeepers suit before I take a swing at this particular hornet's nest.
*zips*
Azure Moon is, inherently, a tragedy, and of the various endings, the one that is the bleakest for the over all future of Fodlan. On a smaller scale level, all the characters that we personally care about are going to be fine by the end of Azure Moon (presuming you where playing on casual and/or didn't let your favs die in the war). On a macro scale, none of the cycles that lead things to fall apart in the first place are fundamentally changed in any way. The systems that lead to the misery/issues of most of the cast are still in place.
Byleth has replaced Rhea as Archbishop, and thus as the semi-divine shadow ruler of Fodlan, and Dimitri has become Wilhelm 2.0- the mortal companion and figure head of said semi-divine shadow ruler, who unites all of Fodlan beneath the control of the Kingdom and Church. The Agarthans meanwhile remain unexposed and plotting in secret. Their's no hint that the Church is going to reform and stop it's policy of censoring and altering history to suit it's political agenda, or meddling in the affairs of the governments of Fodlan at whim or need. And their is really no reason to believe that in another few hundred years the cycle wont repeat itself as the pressure from all the cracks and flaws in the system once again becomes unbearable.
It's telling to me that Edelgard in Verdant Wind more or less accepts her fate when Claude and Byleth have her cornered. She tells them outright that the only way forward is to unite all of Fodlan and sieze the future, and they can only do that if they kill her. But in Azure Moon she resists past the point of all reason, becoming the Hegemon in her efforts to defeat Byleth and Dimitri, and using her last breath to try and cut Dimitri down with her dagger. And that's because deep down, she knows that Dimitri lacks the will and the courage to break the cycle. Claude, is a reformer, a visionary who wants a better future and wont stop until he has the truth. Dimitri even after everything he's been through is still a servant of the past, and still bound by it. So she refuses to yield to the bitter end, to give up her dream of a better future no matter what.

for the meme!: Top 5 Jobs (ICly and/or what you prefer to play)
this was harder than I thought, considering that if I like a job I tend to bend my own personal canon to make it work in-character -- like Ellie picked up reaper because deep down she knew she wanted to go head-to-head with Zenos on his own terms. but that doesn't mean it's actually still what I prefer to play, either, so it got weird. I decided to make this about which job I like playing most in each role...though I am pretty bad at ranged and caster. and healer. I have a very obviously in-your-face playstyle, I'm pretty sure.
at any rate!
-------------------------
Tank: Dark Knight
Tumblr media
i have. exulted quite a bit about dark knight in these answers lmao. but part of the reason i love it so much is because I genuinely have a blast playing it. It feels big and powerful, it feels risky, it really nails the feel of making yourself bleed to protect your comrades. The burst phase when you just throw absolutely everything you have at the enemy is an incredibly satisfying, violent rampage. They made it an ability to call upon your dark twin to help you in combat, and I've mentioned how much of a sucker I am for dark twin shit. Blackest Night, imo, is the most rewarding "super shield" tank ability. And post-buff, I'd argue Living Dead is the best invuln.
plus you know, everything about the entire storyline and Esteem and the image of playing through Shadowbringers in this job. it's all just so good. Immensely satisfying to play and is probably the best at fulfilling its "job fantasy" for me.
2. Melee: Monk
Tumblr media
I always like the hand-to-hand characters or movesets in fantasy settings; there's something very appealing to me about facing a bunch of fantastic supernatural beings and just punching them in the face. That said, I actually had several false starts with FFXIV before it finally hooked me about... four years ago. Every one of those times I picked pugilist as my starting class, got frustrated by never being able to hit positionals (it was because i was using lockon. why does the lockon in this game exist lmao.), and would give up. Once I was finally properly playing, I pushed through leveling pugilist into monk and thought it was... alright, but felt incredibly high-strung, like they were putting in more effort to do the same damage. Then Endwalker completely reworked the kit.
They lowered the level requirements for the chakra moves, making them actually fun and usable long before Stormblood. They made Greased Lightning a constant trait instead of having to struggle to keep it up so your GCD wasn't ass. They added the Masterful Blitz mechanic to dial in combos that end with kickass finishers. They... didn't give it any new buttons for the actual 80-90 level range that EW covered, but that was okay because I was suddenly having way more fun working this rotation than almost anything else in the whole game. It's either tied with or above DRK for my absolute favorite to play, because it's fun, rewards skilled play, and I get to do DBZ shit and zip all over to kick my enemies into oblivion. Plus, I'm doing almost as much damage as my co-melee in my static who uses the hanzo steel of a samurai, but I'm using my bare fists. It rules.
(not really a fan of the storyline, though. hence why canonically Ellie trains with Lyse instead of Erik and Widargelt. :V)
3. Healer: Sage
Tumblr media
I kinda feel bad that I started as a conjurer, and yet I am by far worse at healing than any other role. At least with White Mage you can kinda get away with spamming Medica II through most of the MSQ, but y'know... that's pretty boring. Pretty effective, and I'd still probably prefer WHM if I ever attempted to heal high-end content, but I'd struggle.
Sage though, I have an absolute blast playing even if I'm not necessarily being a great healer. The aesthetic rules and can pretty easily be written as magitek-y: hence, Mia canonically can use Sage even though she's Garlean and can't usually do a caster job. I love flipping Eukrasia to activate powerful energy shields, even though it also means one more button press than all the other healers to apply the DoT. I love zapping dudes with Gundam-esque funnels and having that channel heals to whoever I want, I love throwing out Physis+Kerachole before a big raidwide, or Krasis+Haima onto the tank before a buster. I even kinda love that it really encourages you to be constantly using your Addersgall pips to help manage your MP. It makes high demands kinda like monk did pre-EW, but for some reason it's a lot more fun as sage. Maybe because of all the sick twists and dramatic pointing you do while firing lasers from Gundam funnels.
I always forget Holos exists though. I have no idea why.
4. Caster: Red Mage
Tumblr media
look, the more red you wear, the more damage you do as red mage. it's scientific. Ellie's favorite color is red, idk how obvious it is. :V
Canonically, I don't think any of my WoLs actually use this. But of the three current casters, RDM strikes the best balance for me of a complex rotation with rewarding mechanics, balancing black and white levels and trying to keep them unsynced so you can keep properly proccing your real attacks, without being overly-demanding like Black Mage or sort of basic with not much room for variations like Summoner (I'm sorry SMN mains! I do like SMN! it's really good for me when I'm having a bad brain day, which is frequent. >.>). You also get to completely save disaster runs with instant-rezzes and double heals, and then never get any comms for it! /eyetwitch
And above all else, it's stylish as fuck to the extent that I kinda wish I had the physical ability to try fencing.
5. Ranged: Dancer
Tumblr media
Funny, I actually thought I was going to choose MCH because gun, but then I thought about what actually satisfies me the most to play, and... it's massively buffing the whole party and then just whaling on every button on your hotbar that lights up, and suddenly I understand how people get addicted to like, pachinko and such games. But seriously, it's fun, it's stylish, the rotation's easy to pick up, you get to feel good about making a buddy do mega damage, and you get to make big damage numbers yourself (I mean obviously it's because of how long it takes to activate the dances but damn it's still satisfying to see that many numbers).
I haven't remotely figured out how, but I do want Lily to canonically pick up and use Dancer. You look like you're having fun when you dance on the battlefield, and Lily deserves good things like having fun in the middle of combat.
and now you're way too familiar with how I play this game. :3 thanks for the prompt, @viiioca!!

TANNER’S PROGRESS REPORT: APRIL 22ND 2023 (SAT)
🎉 WE'RE STILL WRITING A BOOK! 🎉
The bullshit we were having in getting Scrivener to recognise and open my stupid project files was twofold, it turns out: not only did Windows File History make the project file illegible to Scrivener by appending a fucking timestamp not just to the main file folder of the project but every fucking file and folder inside it, it also set it to read only for some reason! So we managed to get the book's file back in a form that Scrivener would play nicely with by getting the backups of Scrivener's own backups, which are stored as .zip files and thereby only had the name of the archive timestamped and none of the files inside, and fixing the permissions to make them writeable again.
So we've got the book back! Thank fuck!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I also worked a little on a PhDemon today, but most of today's been a big, long FFXIV session wherein I spent some considerable hours working on Stelak's new house, which I've decided is his. Ahem. His workplace. If you've read his recent propaganda post, you'll know what that means. 💜
Now I'm going to turn my fucking phone off and go to bed! I do not care to be disturbed by this bullshit emergency alert system test that is happening tomorrow! ✌️✌️✌️
Goodnight, internet!

---
The sun is reflecting off the glass doors of the balcony. The man lifts his right arm to shield his eyes with his black coat; the lavender flower design on the shoulder flicker in the light. Even while squinting, he keeps watch on the door inside the room.
He has been sitting pretty on the balcony ledge of his target’s apartment for the past two hours. To amuse himself, he’s been playing with his hair bun, swinging his legs and humming different songs he’s invented (again), waiting for the woman to come home.
His humming fades out as he hears footsteps in the hallway. He immediately pushes a button on the heel of his shoe and grabs the ejected knife. He’s best at precision, but right now he can’t focus his gaze. If he just aims directly at her heart…
The door creaks and opens.
“Strike true…!”
The knife zips through the air. It pierces the door and the Auri woman sees her own eyes blink back at her in the knife’s reflection. She’s shocked at the attack, but not at the presence of a stranger—no, a murderer.
Rin sensed this was coming. Her skin’s been feeling awfully prickly the past few days, probably because an unfamiliar pair of eyes had been watching her.
The woman sighs. “I started fortune-telling as a hobby. As a joke. Who knew I was cut out for it? Don’t you agree, mister, uh…?”
Hythlodaeus responds by tilting his head and smiling. Rin finds that expression equally charming and terrifying—the same fear she gets from seeing toy dolls staring at her at night, accompanied by a hoarse music box playing somewhere.
“I’ve been waiting for an opening,” the man says and winks.
Without hesitation, Hyth jumps off the balcony rails and leaps towards the Au Ra, hands stretched out to grapple her. The woman is just as nimble, however; she ducks, then wraps her tail around his leg. Once again eluded, but it’s too late for a counterattack. With her tail, Rin twists his body upward (she has no intention of damaging his face; this is just self-defense) and slams him against the floor.
Not bad. But is that even possible? Can Auri tales be that strong? The assassin takes a mental note to learn that move… He’ll have to make do without a tail, though.
Hyth stretches on the ground, his back cracking in sensitive places, then sits on his elbows. “You’re quite the agile one, hmm? Don’t humiliate me, dear.”
But this woman is one surprise after another because then, Hyth’s intel is correct: before his eyes he sees a wand manifest in Rin’s hand. Rin twirls the wand—once, twice—but Hyth has no time for that.
Before she can cast something, Hyth, with his deft-as-ever hands, grabs the crossbow strapped to his leg and fires an arrow at the wand. Bullseye.
The wand flies out of her hand and is pinned to the wall with a boing. He stands up and pulls the knife from the door. In the meantime, he holds it in his mouth, biting the handle.
“Take two,” he mutters, eyes narrowed in delight.
Hyth straps his crossbow back into place. By the time Rin recovers, Hyth backs her into a wall, gripping her shoulders. Hard. But his expression never changes: it’s still as sweet as ever, just like when he aimed the knife at her heart. What kind of shit is this man on...
“Rin, yeah? Rin Atmei.” The assassin wants to double check. The Au Ra nods slowly.
Hyth takes the knife from his mouth and with its tip he raises the woman’s chin, gently. He lowers his gaze and makes sure they keep eye contact.
“Will you become a part of my entertainment?”
His voice is flat but he’s still grinning. Rin knows it’s a rhetorical question. Rin knows he’s already found the answer by staring into her eyes. Her brown almond eyes lit by fuchsia limbal rings; his pure purple eyes, hungry for a specific response.
“Oh, and my codename is Daeus,” he hisses. His voice curves as he says his own name, somewhat with disdain, and synchronized with the knife digging just a millimeter deeper in her chin. “But for a final mercy, I’ll allow you to call me Hyth.”
Rin manifests another wand. “It’s magic, dumbass.” She conjures a spell, quickly this time, and Hyth’s eyes widen (at his naivety).
It all happens in a split second. Rin launches a concentrated ball of… something. Hyth pushes himself off the wall. He raises his leg and right on cue kicks the ball of magic. The spell hits the shelf near Rin’s bed and a few flowerpots crash to the floor. Hyth lets out a tch; he’s trying his best not to make a fuss.
The assassin hits the ground again but luckily no damage on his chic clothes. Rin, however, gets a scratch on her cheek from the pots.
“My bad,” Hyth says with a nervous smile and a wave of his hand, genuinely sorry. The man stands up, brushes the soil off his skirt, then grabs the chair by the desk and sits. He keeps his knife and checks if his crossbow is alright. After inspecting himself, Hyth crosses his legs and leans forward. “Right,” he says between breaths, “let’s try diplomacy instead.”
It’s like he doesn’t actually want to do his job and kill me… but that makes him even more suspicious, Rin says in her head. She goes along for the time being and sits on the edge of her bed.
The woman tightens the ribbons of her sleeve, also checking if her outfit has gone awry from the battle. She tells Hyth not to panic and conjures another wand, but this time to heal the wounds on her face and chin, the latter Hyth’s doing. Despite the warning, he hides his face behind his hands. He’s clearly unwilling to fight another round.
Hyth peeks through his fingers and sees Rin adjust the braid to the left of her face.
“Oh, thanks for the reminder.”
Of all the things to check, Hyth didn’t notice how messy his hair bun has become. He moves his hands to the back of his head and in one smooth pull of the hair tie, Rin sees a sight she considers herself blessed to witness.
Hyth’s hair requires incredibly high maintenance, that much she can tell. To keep the length past his shoulders and work in a job that probably doesn’t have the most conducive environment for hair care… To preserve the texture that, and just by looking at it, tastes like the sweetest, softest marshmallows, or feels like a divine waterfall from a hidden spring, one that appears only in dreams.
Rin guesses that it either takes an eternity to conserve such beauty or perhaps Hyth doesn’t do anything at all, and he may just be one of the luckiest bastards on the planet. It almost makes the woman jealous, but then she remembers how lazy she is. Short and shorter is her way to go. The unkempt look of her gray hair has its charm.
His hair tie slides down and falls to the floor. The man bends to pick it up, and the view clutches Rin in its intoxicating grasp once again. His hair flows like the ocean waves at sunrise, only this time it’s dazzling purple, not crystal blue. The water greets the shore a good morning, and it’s a gentle meeting, just as Hyth sits back up and he catches a sparkle in Rin’s eyes.
He splits his hair into three equal sections then crosses one over the other, and in a few blinks, he’s set. Well, not exactly—only half of his hair is in a braid, and Hyth just ties it there, leaving the bottom dangling. He rests his masterpiece on his left shoulder.
He’s done? Rin asks herself. Like with his bun earlier, some strands are out of the knot, falling to frame his face. Hyth does that signature tilt-and-smile again, aware of her gaze.
“Aren’t you assassins supposed to be undercover? Why are you interrogating me?” Rin asks so that he doesn’t probe her thoughts further.
“Oh, you know, for fun.” The man lets out a single, soft chuckle. “I much prefer doing the job from the shadows, out of sight, but I still bring my trusty knife in case I want things to get intimate.”
Rin puts on a straight face. He mutters, “Indulge in me, will you? I never get to engage in a heart-to-heart with anyone in a job like this.”
“Soooo,” Hyth says, louder than usual. He leans back in his seat, both hands on his knee. “You’ve proven to me that you do dabble in magic. I was ordered to assassinate you for that threat.”
Rin sighs, raising both hands up then down in a shrug. “Magic is ‘a power forbidden and long-forgotten; cursed for its wielders and—”
“Why you chose such a dangerous deed is one thing, but there’s another, more interesting question: you could’ve been thrown in the slammer instead, so why hire me anyway?” Hyth rests his chin in his palm. “If my superiors were as intelligent as me, I’d rather interrogate you and use your knowledge for my own benefit.”
“But noooo,” the assassin whines. “They never listen to me and it’s my job and the pay is splendid, etcetera…”
Is he… ranting to me…
In that instant Hyth leans forward and firmly clutches the bottom of the chair with both hands. “So you will listen to me.” His voice is a bit different, like a low rumbling of a storm to come.
Rin nods about eight times and waves her hand, dismissing any uncooperative thoughts.
Hyth sits back and beams again. “Rin Atmei, Master of the Arts Guild,” he continues back to his flowery voice and a finger tapping his cheek, “beneath your veneer of weaving and alchemy, the powers that come with your position and your knowledge of magic—these two forces do not mix.”
“Judging by your luxurious rings,” Rin interrupts him this time as she points at the accessories on his fingers, “are you perchance interested in goldsmithing? I think a man of your taste is also interested in the culinary arts. Wanting things his way and all. I could hire you into the Guild.”
Hyth’s eyes flash in fascination. “You flatter me! That’s three yesses. If I let you go, that is.”
“R-right. Let me know. Continue.”
Was that a ruse? Hyth thinks. Or was she really…
“Aaanyway, killing is much, much easier. Weed out the root.” The assassin cracks his knuckles.
“There’s another layer, however: my bosses love frolicking in their little playground, by their sea of coin. They enjoy feigning justice, so that’s where I come in.” Hyth smiles, but Rin notices this time, it’s a lot less genuine. She sets down his cup of tea on the desk then sits back on her bed, holding her own cup. Hyth was too caught up in this classified talk that he didn’t realize his… target gave him a little gift.
Rin raises her cup in a toast.
Hyth whiffs in the calming scent of leaves, takes a sip, then winces. He blows into the cup then puts it down. He gives a thumbs up.
He clears his throat. “By now I’m sure you can tell I accepted this mission because, subconsciously, I didn’t want to kill you.” (Bullseye.) “I wanted to ask something.”
Rin glances outside. She’s supposed to be swimming through paperwork right now: approving projects, reviewing recruits, and going down her checklist, or maybe studying magic further. A crow perches on the balcony rail, watching the two. What does it think about them? Friends, or enemies? Maybe there’s more to that scale, in between or beyond.
Hyth tells Rin that he wanted to take advantage of this moment. He knows his superiors would go easy on him and assume this job would take longer than usual; magic is an unknown, unrivaled power, so who knows what even this expert assassin might encounter? “That way,” he says, “I could get more money and get what I personally want out of you.”
The man slides his arms out of the frilled sleeves of his coat and places it on the chair. Rin takes a good look at him again—for self-defense reasons, of course. He might have one or maybe a hundred more knives tucked away somewhere, especially with heels like those.
His entire outfit is mostly a clean, jet black look. The accents are the flowers on his shoulders (gleaming purple like his hair—isn’t he kind of over the top?) that could easily be mistaken for grapes, as well as the glinting rings on his fingers; the white leather layer on his above-the-knee-length skirt, and the more-than-flamboyant purple ribbon on his heels. Now that his coat is off, Rin sees Hyth’s top: with only one long sleeve for his left arm and the bottom half of his torso covered, all else is skin. There’s this weird strap thing that goes from his chest to his left shoulder; the woman realizes she may not be that different from her pursuer after all, at least with their peculiar tastes in fashion.
In the same window of time, Hyth scans her from top to bottom. He approves of her braid, tied with an adorable, tiny sky blue ribbon. It almost matches her hair highlights, and Hyth assumes it could be dyed forget-me-not; based on his intel and instincts, this Auri woman is somehow sophisticated despite being awkward once you get to know her. She’s also notorious for her secrets, but Hyth kept that intel aside, maybe for torture should he need it. She wears a revealing top draped on her body; weird sleeve choices like him, one that just looks like a ribbon wrapped around her arm; her firm shorts and leggings that lead down to her knee boots, looping up like butterfly wings. In fact, attached to the heels of her shoes there are red, flame-like wings, probably made of reflective material to glow no matter the time of day.
Yeah, just like him. Jet black and gaudy in the right places. Both inconspicuous and not. Both wanting to be seen, in some way.
The assassin continues. “I shot an arrow smack between the eyes of a sleazy merchant—that was a simple, ‘normal’ job. I detonated a bomb in a barn south of this city. My intel declared there were illegal concoctions brewing there and the unidentified culprit intended to sell them to the alchemy shop, switch them out for actual potions. Again, I’m a lone assassin, not a detective. My boss told me to ‘hurry the fuck up, it’s your job,’” Hyth says, eyes rolling. This man gesticulates so much that his tea almost spilled. “I didn’t get to check for any passersby that day. Another time, I slit the throat of a friend’s friend making unauthorized deals with the neighboring city. The sun was rising just as I did it, and it was a peaceful morning all else aside.”
Their teacups have gone cold.
“I have not once failed a single mission. Always a success in the eyes of my superiors, but my eyes see things differently.”
He pauses.
“No matter what anyone tells me, no matter the coin in my pocket, it’s always a failure.”
The assassin catches the crow’s gaze outside. Darkness is falling. The streetlamps are lighting the path. The crow flies away.
“Killing is never easy. I thought I was doing the right thing when I signed up for this, but it kept going. More bodies to hunt, more lives to erase.”
Rin walks to the kitchen and gets a dustpan and paper bag to clean the broken flowerpots. She doesn’t quite know what to say but talking with your supposed killer is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. She’s glad he’s patient with her silence.
Hyth watches her, thinking the same thing. She really is just listening. Perhaps she knows she can retaliate with that unknown font of magic, but maybe a part of her truly cares.
“At some point I turned immortal.” Hyth ejects his knife again and slides the flat side against his skin. “I can never die because nothing and no one will deliver unto me a blade as cold as this.” He cherishes its unfriendly yet familiar touch, but when he sees his own eyes in the reflection, he looks away and hides it again. “Because I do not deserve to be saved.”
The shards of shattered terracotta clink against each other. The man exhales. “I know this is foolish, but trusting my instincts is my strong suit. I was hoping you’d give me at least a semblance of an answer, then I’ll be on my way, dear.”
The Auri woman finishes up. She places the trash bag by the door. Maybe later, if I’m still breathing. She brushes the dirt off her hands then goes to the sink for a quick wash. She splashes some water on her face, dries her hands on her black bottoms but leaves her face glistening wet. The cold water feels refreshing; this talk was more exhausting than the battle earlier.
“Ask away.”
Hyth takes a deep breath.
“… Aren’t I the same as the ‘criminals’ I murder? Maybe even worse, since I don’t have a mind of my own. I would say these hands are no longer my own, but I could just be avoiding accountability.” The assassin opens his hands and flips them, front and back, slowly, repeatedly. “Why do you dabble in magic? Do you seek a sort of thrill from it as well?”
Rin lies down, her legs hanging, and does a big, cat-like stretch. “I don’t know, actually. I don’t think that warrants an answer. I just want to, you know? I’m curious to find alternate universes. To reach the stars or some such. Wasn’t that your answer to me earlier—because it’s fun?”
Hyth looks up from his hands and looks at Rin. He’s glad she can’t see the sparkle in his eyes right now.
He walks to the balcony door and rests his already cold hands on the freezing glass. His hands, cold and bloodied.
“The world is cruel enough without this magic mumbo jumbo,” Rin continues, sitting back up. Hyth replies in his head, perhaps silencing magic plays a part in this cruelty, or maybe I believe in you too much, Rin. These doubts and desires can coexist, I suppose.
“True,” he says. “I’m no good at playing hero, and more so his enemy. I’ve learned, thanks to you, that everyone is the same. We’re all fools. The least we can do is have fun. Otherwise, you’d end up worse—for yourself and everyone around you.”
Rin stands up and Hyth walks to her. He holds her head from behind and presses their noses together, gently. He stares down at her and she does the same.
Maybe this is it for me.
When the woman realizes her ‘enemy’ is just standing, arms limp on his sides, her head starts to feel a bit hot.
“Nose-touching. As a threat,” Hyth says, his breath ticklish on her face.
After a minute, the assassin breaks away from their nose-to-nose combat. The two realize how cold the room has become. The moon is up, glowing, watching.
Hyth knows he’s a murderer. The more lives he erases, the more he can’t erase this fact.
But he can sever the strings that make him a puppet. No one would dare touch him, anyway; he’d slice them before they even tried, because he’s immortal.
He flops on the bed, imitating Rin earlier. Rin does the same, but she walks to the side of the bed first—she wants to keep some space between them… because. Not even I could predict this outcome.
“You and your theatrics,” Rin says. “You could’ve just asked for a tarot reading. In exchange for my life, it’d be free, of course.”
“Bright idea. Just a single card is alright?”
Rin shimmies her tarot deck out of her back pocket. She shuffles the cards above her face. Hyth tilts his head to watch, his eyes following her movements. “Is that another weapon of your choice?” She mumbles something like questionable, but she’s too focused.
A few seconds later, she stops and takes the card on top but places it in the back of the deck. That’s been her personal shuffling style. The new card on top is what she flips over between them.
“Ace of Cups, upright.” Rin snorts. “What fate. That’s my favorite card. It represents new feelings and intuition. Follow your heart, like I told you, basically.”
“Even this is like magic, and I prefer a touch of facts, but another part of me believes this can’t be coincidence,” Hyth says. “Not after today.”
As the night grows the air in the room gets warmer. Rin gives Hyth the card and their hands brush. Rin moves her hand away, but still in the space between them, within reach, just in case. Hyth is fully aware of what happened. He tries to stay calm. He folds one arm and with his other free hand he admires the details of the tarot card. A bird, a dove? An overflowing stream. Water lilies, rain, a hand coming out of a cloud.
He looks outside again. “Hmm, too bad the clouds are back. If we could just solve this awkward tension with a little stargazing.”
Rin gasps, startling Hyth. She stretches her left hand above her, waves it in a circle, then snaps. At that instant, the entire room is covered in a grainy atmosphere which can only be described as stardust. It’s like being in the sky rather than just looking at it, so it’s far better than stargazing, Hyth thinks. Stars red, blue, and others a soft white, but still a beautiful glow nonetheless. There’s a central star made of pure light and it’s hard to look at it.
“I learned that spell today. I told myself I’d have to bring the stars down first since it’ll take me ages to reach them up there. I hope this stargazing solves the awkward tension.”
Hyth keeps the tarot card in his pocket and slides one of his hands below Rin’s. The other hand follows suit on top, locking hers in place. Now, Rin puts her other hand on top of his, and the two pairs of hands are sandwiched, warm. Hyth looks at her. She returns the gaze, hesitantly. That central star is revealing too much of her face, more than she wants to.
“I truly never loved anyone like this before,” Hyth whispers.
Rin responds with silence, but one with weight and meaning. The two maintain their gazes and their hands stay clasped for another moment.
Yeah, these two are just like each other. Secretive and strange in the right places.

I love Final Fantasy XIV
So I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIV, and after playing for around 180 hours, I haven’t even finished A Realm Reborn. Normally, 180 hours is an insane time frame for a game to manage and hold my attention. Persona 5 Royal was 180 hours of game time, and that was slowly outstaying its welcome. FFXIV must be doing something right, because just recently I went to a convention and bought a Y’shtola Keychain in a heartbeat. I haven’t had time to play XIV a lot prior to this, since I was stupidly grinding Praetorium for days and got burned out. I haven’t played much in 2 months, and Y’shtola only really has a minor role during A Realm Reborn’s Storyline. Despite that, I started in Limsa and Y’shtola stuck with me since then. I just had to buy that keychain. My girlfriend asked me about it and despite me staying away from the game after being burned out, I explained to her in great enthusiasm why I loved Y’shtola and why I loved the game so much. I think that’s the first time I really realized how attached I was to this world, these characters, this game.
I came to FFXIV after having played WoW from Vanilla through WotLK, after having barely ever touched a MMO since quitting WoW. Honestly, I was very skeptical of XIV but holy fucking shit did it ever win me over. They are completely different games, mind you, but that is a good thing in my opinion.
So here is the longest tumblr rant post I have written so far, I think.
To be fair, the first 20 levels or so were kinda slow. You get thrown into the deep end and get bombarded with lore and characters, terms and phrases that you don't understand. For fucks sake, the opening cutscene shows Louisoix fighting Bahamut front and center. Its this big, epic moment of sacrifice, but to someone who has not played 1.0 and who doesn't know anything about the lore, this just zips right past you. During the main story of ARR, they keep talking about Louisoix and how important he is, but you haven't even seen the guy because he died before the game even started. I only really realized this today, it took me 180 hours and a look at the wiki to connect the dots. It really is a slow burn, but that slow burn was okay because everything else was so fantastic.
While the world can arguably be more subdued than Azeroth in parts, there is still this distinctive style that I quickly fell in love with. It’s fantastical, but it still feels grounded. Part of that has to do with how the game introduces you to the world, and how the main story quests explain to you the lore bit by bit. I feel like much of the world design of WoW was down to “the rule of cool”. Now, I’m not saying XIV doesn’t have that, but I feel like XIV always goes the extra mile to explain why this cool shit is here. Everything you see out there in the world feels like it has a purpose, a reason to be there and an explanation on how it works. The factions make sense, the political conflicts you get entangled in are believable. I feel like I am kind of biased to be honest. What got me to play FFXIV in the first place was seeing that Viera are a playable race. I’m a sucker for Final Fantasy, not in short part to my memories of Playing Final Fantasy Tactics and XII. XII is still my favorite game in the series, and much of that has to do with the world, Ivalice. Viera were always my favorite race of the ones seen in Ivalice. Seeing as you can play a Viera in XIV, I just had to try. Thinking about it, XII and XIV have a lot in common when it comes to world building.
One of the weirdest things to acclimate for me was how FFXIV handles story. I was used to WoW, where story was basically non-existent and you did what you did to see numbers rise and to unlock now content you could do. You are basically never involved in the story of WoW, you are just kind of there for the ride. In FFXIV, you are the main character. You are involved in what happens at all times, and that is kinda strange coming from WoW. At first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but the game made it work in my opinion. I also didn’t expect there to be so much of story to begin with. Kind of ironically the moment I realized just how much there was to experience was when I went through Ul’dah and saw a blue quest. Now, blue quest markers mean there is some content you can unlock by doing this quest. A lot of these are kinda short, with a bit of dialogue and some bits of lore for you to enjoy and I thought this one would be no difference. After all, the hook is basically just to help this lady mourn for the death of a friend. What I got was a fabulous detective adventure that spanned over the entire continent, where in I had to help the worlds most manly detective uncover the secret behind a mysterious phantom thief. To say the least, this 21 quest long quest line brought be hours upon hours of joy and had me in stitches throughout. And it was completely optional. I don’t think I even remember a single moment from any quest in WoW that made me this excited for it, optional or otherwise.
Ultimately these are very different games that try very different things.
Dungeons and Raids were a different thing. I remember when I rolled a new character for WotLK and wanted to do karazhan because I used to like doing that raid with my guild back in TBC. I could not for the live of me find a group willing to do it, because everyone was way more focused on the new content, so they could get better gear. Regardless, it just wouldn’t have been the same experience anyways I fear, because the new gear from the new Dungeons outclassed the raid gear from TBC, so karazhan would be way easier and a much different experience. In FFXIV, every dungeon is level synced by default, meaning if a higher level character joins, they get basically downgraded to the level the dungeon was designed for. Couple that with the Duty Roulette feature and suddenly, there was always someone to do any given dungeon with. I remember when I had to do the crystal tower raids and thought “why would they tie main story progression to a raid, I will never find a group to do that properly” but low and behold, I found a group within 30 minutes or less and raided through the entire set of raids within a day. Dungeons and Raids are generally a very pick up and play thing in FFXIV. To be fair, dungeons got easier and more pick up and play in WoW too, but Raids were always the endgame thing where you had to gear up and learn to play. In FFXIV, much more lenient. No corpse walking required. I say this, but I have yet to do the Coils of Bahamut or any Savage Raids. I have only heard that there is plenty of hardcore raid content for those who want that.
That’s nothing to say about the actual gameplay. FFXIV is a tab-target MMO, like so many others, but it manages to keep this kind of gameplay fresh by introducing a lot of mechanics that make the game more active than the typical “I stand here and hit my rotation a lot”. For starters, most enemies have special abilities that you can actually dodge by moving out of the way. There will a area marker on the floor and everyone within that area will be hit. It starts out easy, but later dungeons really start kicking your ass with this mechanic. You really need to say on your toes. In addition, every class is extremely different. They all have special mechanics unique to them, special meters and resources they will have to manage during combat and so on. For example, a Red Mage (the class I’m playing currently), has two meters that fill up as you cast spells. They generally have two types of spells, white and black magic. Each type fills its respective bar. Once they are both full enough, you can go in and do a more powerful melee rotation. However, if one bar is fuller than the other, the other bar will fill up slower. Since you need to fill both, you want to balance that out. You get instant casts for spells after performing a damaging spell, and you have some spells with a short cast time and good damage output that you want to cast and then use the instant cast of to cast a more damaging spell that has a long cast time. But these short cast, good damage spells require a you get from casting a spell of the respective type. So, in essence, you want to balance your use of black and white magic, but you also want to use the proc you get from casting your white and black magic, which means you cast more of the type which inherently unbalances your gauges. It becomes this micromanagement game you play with your procs and instant casts, so you can go in and do the big, flashy sword combo. And that’s just the red mage at around 50. Every class has something like this, and it’s all unique to them. Learning a class is not just learning the rotation and spells you have anymore, it’s really learning how to effectively play your class. Also, positioning. Some abilities do more damage from certain positions, so you will have to dance around an enemy to hit all the sweet spots with classes like monks. These complexities get introduced slowly as you level up, so you have plenty of time to learn the mechanics. My favorite feature might be the class system itself, though. In FFXIV, you aren’t limited to one class for the entire duration of your characters career. You can, from a certain point forwards, choose any class you wish and level that up instead. You can freely switch between classes outside of combat, too. If you are dedicated enough, you can level them all up to max, even. This means if you don’t like a class or the direction a class is going in, you can switch. I for my part started as an arcanist, so I unlocked Summoner at 30. I played Summoner up to 50 but I was just not meshing as well with the direction the summorer went in. So, I switched to Red Mage and after some getting used to, Its now my new favorite. Arcanists are special, because you actually unlock two classes at 30, so I also unlocked Scholars. Scholars are healers and that became my main dungeon class, since queue times are way shorter for healers. This would be unthinkable in WoW, and love the fact this is a thing here.
If I had to describe it, WoW is an MMO with RPG Elements, while FFXIV is a JRPG with MMO elements. I didn’t know I needed that, but in retrospect, it makes sense. The thing that really killed my progress in WoW was that I didn’t have anyone to play with anymore. My friends all dropped from the game and while I generally like doing solo content from time to time, I’m pretty introverted, after all... MMORPGs are usually most fun with friends. Final Fantasy XIV is a JRPG first, an MMO second. There is so much to keep your attention as a solo player, its nuts. All my friends who play this game, play on a different data center, so I can’t even visit them. Despite that, I had a lot of fun in my time with the game.
My experience with the game was incredibly positive, and I don’t think it will get worse from here. Everyone keeps telling me how great Heavensward is. I just have to finish 16 more quests and I’ll be able to see for myself what the fuss is about.
Honestly, if I had to say anything negative, it would be how longwinded ARR is. I mean, its not bad by any means, but I can see how someone could be turned off by this huge storyblock. Worst of all is, after you hit 50 and reach the end of ARR’s story line, there are 80 quests before you can even start with Heavensward. Since everyone keeps going on about how great it is, it’s kind of annoying how long you have to work to even get to it. In retrospect, it kinda makes sense though. These quests are meant to be played over months and months throughout a update cycle and bridge the narrative gap between one storyblock and the next, but holy fucking shit why did it have to be THAT long. They even cut like 20 of the quests from this already insanely long quest line. What the fuck. This is supposed to be an epilogue to ARR and it feels like I played a whole fucking JRPG in between ARR and Heavensward. Oh well. Thankfully, they learned from this and made the post-story blocks shorter.
I will just say that I can recommend this game. You should give it a try. Just... try not to drop the game before it gets really, really good.

Hidden Rules for Solo PotD
Want to get the rarest achievement in FFXIV for going from 1-200 in Palace of the Dead all on your own? A few tips!
1) Set up your bar with a Potion button. Even if you’re a healer; There are traps that can silence you. When a new kind of potion starts dropping from enemies, put that into the potion button you’ve set up.
2) Food buffs providing bonus Vitality do work. Other food buffs don’t appear to have any effect. Honestly, just blow a bunch of GC points for Cockatrice Meatballs. You’ll be able to keep a food buff up the whole run without worrying about wasting something valuable.
3) Only use charge moves point blank, unless you’ve used Safety or Sight. The high speed of a charge doesn’t prevent you from triggering a trap, and you don’t want to zip next to a slime only to realize you’ve been turned into a toad, or that you hit a landmine en route and are now starting that fight at 15% hp. Do use them! Most charge moves are free OGCD damage. But don’t gap-close unless you KNOW there’s no trap to hit.
4) If you’re using a controller, set up a macro with the line /statusoff Transfiguration and set this to one of your button combos (for me it’s RT>LT+Up). You want to be in the angel or succubus forms exactly long enough to do what their thing (in the succubus’ case, get the target to 5 stacks of vulnerability) and then you usually want to turn back without waiting out the clock. Notably, you can’t use items or open chests while in these forms. If you don’t want to set up a macro, you can tap the pad until it highlights your status effects and then press X to end the status.
5) Try to vary between floors where you play it safe and use very little of your pomander inventory and floors where you use a bunch at once. For instance, using Sight and Fortune and Strength makes it so for one floor you can see and avoid traps (Sight), making it a lot safer to grind enemies for chests, which drop more often (Fortune), and the enemies die faster (Strength). You could use Rage with Fortune, but manticores can’t open chests.
6) Conversely, be careful about bad Pomander uses: If you use Witching in a hallway nothing will happen unless something’s in the hall with you. Don’t use Fortune if you used Flight last floor. You’ve set this floor up to have fewer monsters, so increasing drop rate of chests from monsters on this floor is wasteful. Careful about using Rage and Sight together. the bulky model of the manticore can make it so you don’t notice traps and step on them even though they’re technically visible. Never use Flight or Affluence on the last floor before a boss (9, 19, 29, etc). They won’t do anything. While it’s POSSIBLE they’ll have an effect, you generally don’t want to use Alteration or Intuition on a 9 floor either. The effects will be reset after the boss, so you’re betting you can get the floor effect on the same floor. The odds, off the cuff, appear to be somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3. And if you wait until the floor right AFTER the boss the odds of getting the value are virtually guaranteed because the buff will just sit there until it goes off.
7) If your Aetherpool Arm and Armor are 10 higher than half your current floor (so 35+ when you’re on floor 50, for instance), you can trade in 10 for a Hilt. This will ensure you keep getting them at a good pace while keeping your gear at a proper level to make progress. Also, you can turn the Hilts in to the same guy who gives them to you and receive fancy weapons for every combat class.
8) Don’t use Flight until you hit level 60. You want those levels! Skipping past earlier content just makes it more likely you’ll die to the boss, especially early on when your kit is really limited.
9) Do floors 1-50. You don’t get the 1-200 achievement if you take the option to start at floor 51.

So, what has the Mun done?
Driven 100 mph - Yes. Don’t do it kids. It’s actually kinda terrifying.
Ridden in a helicopter - Nada. Won’t catch me in one anytime soon.
Gone zip lining - Hell to the no
Been to an NFL game - Fuck that noise. If I wanted to see grown men fight over a ball, I’d watch my brothers try and play basketball
Been to Canada - Nada.
Visited Florida- Nupe.
Visited Mexico - Try again.
Visited Las Vegas - Yes, and I stick to the point: Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. I say that cuz I gambled a couple times with my daily fun budget [Basically my budget I allowed for fun every night I was there] and lost it. Though I did make back double what I lost later.
Eaten alone at a restaurant - Yes because sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking.
Ability to read music - Uhhhhh do lyrics count....?
Ridden a motorcycle - Ridden and driven one. See question #1.
Ridden a horse - Yes and then promptly fell off.
Stayed in a hospital - Yes, on a couple occasions for different reasons.
Donated blood - Tried to, did once and then promptly passed out soon after.
Been snow skiing - Yes, and broke my leg doing it.
Been to Disney World - Nope.
Disney Land - Nada. What is the difference between the two anyways?
Slept outside - Uhhhh for camping? Does that count or do they literally mean outside....
Driven a stick shift - I did and it was a -nightmare-
Ridden in an 18 wheeler - No.
Ridden in a police car? - Yes, but it was because my car broke down. A cop saw me and she was nice enough to take me off the bypass and drop me off someplace I could use a phone to call for help.
Driven a boat - Does a jetski count?
Eaten Escargot - Fuck no. I don’t eat shellfish already, and even if snails aren’t seafood, it still remains in a shell and tastes gross.
Been on a cruise - No.
Run out of gas - Yes, and it was not fun Freddy Flinstone-ing the car back to my house.
Been on TV - Briefly in the background and even then you could barely see me.
Eaten Sushi - Yes.
Seen a UFO - Nope.
Been Bungie jumping - Fuck that noise, I am scared of heights.
Been stuck in the house for days - Aside from this quarantine? Yes, because a blizzard froze the doors to the exit of my apartment building, and it took two days for them to dig us out.

Boldly been there.. boldly done that?
Driven 100 mph -  YEP! Some cars are just smooth enough that you can accidentally hit 130mph if you’re not paying attention. Ridden in a helicopter -  No, though I’d love to! Gone zip lining - Nope. Never been anywhere that I could. Been to an NFL game -  Nah, we don’t really like baseball around here. Been to Canada -  Nope. Closest I’ve gotten was Alaska which is practically Canadia. Visited Florida -  Nope Visited Mexico -    Nope Visited Las Vegas - Yes! Only for a night. Went to a show, ate some great food, then went on to California to spend two weeks with my bestest friend @theshadowborn No Eaten alone at a restaurant -  Yep. Doesn’t bother me, and I’m not sure why it bothers people at all. You gotta eat, right? Ability to read music -   Yes! All the way from bass cleff to treble clef, both in singing and playing strings. Even piano. Ridden a motorcycle -   Yeeeees. When dad was a patrol officer, he used to take me to work on his bike. The kids thought I was soooo cool =D Ridden a horse -  Yes!! My aunt taught all of us who wanted to learn. The rule was if you could touch the horse’s ear without getting terrified, then you were old enough to learn to ride. I’ve been told I was 3 when I stood up in the saddle and hugged Amber’s neck, then grabbed her ear. I know for sure that my aunt helped me to stand. She said I was bold and unafraid, so she enjoyed helping me. NO idea if it’s true, or just one of those family stories that gets blown out of proportion. I did grow up riding every time we went to their place, however, and even got my first broken bones there at the age of 7. Donated blood -  Not yet. I was always too anemic to do so. Been snow skiing -   Noppers, and I’m not sure I ever would. I’m too clumsy. Been to Disney World -  Nope, and no interested in doing so. Crowds? no thanks. Not unless I’m drugged up with my anxiety meds. Disney Land -  Nope, for the same reasons. Slept outside -  Oh yes. I used to go camping all the time as a kid. Second favorite thing to do besides riding horses. Driven a stick shift - Yep. My first car, and the car I learned on were standard. Ridden in an 18 wheeler - Yes. Interesting time. Ex roommate was a driver of a dump, and a transport. I was interested in driving, and he took me with him for a full day’s driving to see if I was still interested. Ridden in a police car? - Yes, unfortunately. Driven a boat -  No, though I wanted to. Uncle didn’t trust me. But then, he didn’t trust anyone with his baby. Eaten Escargot -  No, but I’ve heard it’s tasty. Been on a cruise -  Hells no. Dirty, nasty places. Run out of gas -  Oh yeah. The ‘best’ time was when I ran out of gas on the hill of a highway exit. We did manage to get out and push the damned thing uphill, though. Hardest physical thing I’ve ever done. Been on TV -  No. Almost was though. One of our news stations wanted to interview kids who’d been sent back to their biological parents when Texas decided to do that across the state. Some stupid bitch convinced them that we had been removed as a bad thing. You know... damaging, right? well, they dropped the interviews, and story. Likely forced to do so because most of us were sent back to abusive situations. Eaten Sushi -  YES! Though my favorite thing in existence is a Black Dragon Roll with eel and stuff in it. I love eel so damn much! Seen a UFO -  Yes, I believe so. In any case, I’ve seen something several times, years apart that moves too fast, in too sharp a direction (right angles and such) to be something that belongs to humans. We’re just not there yet, especially since the first time was when I was 15. Been Bungie jumping - Nope. Been stuck in the house for days - Since I can’t leave the house without being drugged to the gills -almost drunk- I’d say a big yes to this one.
Thanks @kuzi-the-hunturr for tagging me in this one! It was fun to answer =)

Munday : What have I done?
Tumblr media
So..what have I done?
Driven 100 mph - ... I have. Long road trip, lots of red bull, really loud music. I was feeling pretty alive and we were gettin’ it on time. Ridden in a helicopter - Goodness no. I could never.  Gone zip lining - I have twice, both for school trips. Been to an NFL game - No, and I don’t plan to. Been to Canada - I’ve never left the US unfortunately.  Visited Florida- Once, when I was very young. Visited Mexico - Nope. Visited Las Vegas - I’ve driven through it twice, but we didn’t stop. I don’t really like big cities, so I could never. Eaten alone at a restaurant - I will grab food to go alone, but I will not stay there alone. I don’t go anywhere alone if I can help it. Ability to read music - I can read treble clef sheet music. I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxophone over the span of about 9-10 years while I was in school. (Yes, the instruments got bigger as my hands got worse.) Ridden a motorcycle - I have a couple times as the passenger.  Ridden a horse - I could actually ride a horse before I could walk. Stayed in a hospital - As a patient? No. I’ve never had anything that major happen, though in the coming months that may change. Donated blood - No. I have the smallest, wiggliest veins. If there was a person capable of getting that much blood out of me, they could keep it. Been snow skiing - No and it sounds awful. All that snow. Been to Disney World - No. I don’t plan on it. And if I did go? It would just be to skim through the food places. Disney Land - Same deal as Disney World. Slept outside - I have gone camping in a tent many many times and have just fallen asleep in trees in my youth. Driven a stick shift - No, but I would love to learn. Ridden in an 18 wheeler - I have not, but it would be neat I think. Ridden in a police car? - Yes, but it wasn’t my fault. Driven a boat - Yes, a speedboat out on the river. Not a huge rush, I really just spent the whole time panicking.  Eaten Escargot - No. I don’t think I could get over the mental block and try it either. Been on a cruise - No, but my mom wants us to all go on a family cruise some time. Run out of gas - Yes, while on my lunch break. D: They still haven’t let me live it down! I was right near work too!! They could have stopped and grabbed me if it was that important to run my machine... Been on TV - Uuhhh.... there were really big cameras at some of our band competitions but goodness I don’t want to know if I was on there. Eaten Sushi - Yes! Though I’m full white bitch and only eat certain ones. Seen a UFO - MaybE?? It’s hard to tell. Been Bungie jumping - No and I don’t think it’s something I could ever do. I am not a big thrill seeker. Been stuck in the house for days - Yes, many a time. You learn to deal.
