Ranking Marvel Phase 4
Excluding ranking No Way Home as I feel like I’d need to get into spoilers to do that, and What if because it’s hard to know what if any implications it has for the MCU overall, I am going to rank everything from the MCU’s current phase and give takes on why they are where they are. I’ll be doing shows, then I’ll be doing movies and the ranks will be from best to worst. My name is RepentantSky, and let’s get into it.
1. Hawkeye.
I really enjoyed this show. While the one plot point of getting home in time for Christmas was a little dumb and very predictable in how it ended, the twists in the shows, and the pacing at which characters were developed, introduced, or how they returned to the MCU proper, in ways I won’t talk about because again, spoilers, was really fantastic. The introduction of Kate Bishop was handled wonderfully, and the show itself didn’t try to force jokes where they didn’t belong, and hey what do you know, they actually had a positive look on larpers, further proving that it’s okay to be a nerd about something, nice! The acting and direction were phenomenal, and it was just overall an enjoyable show to watch, even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of the antagonists we see in the show, because I feel like they needed more time to be developed so we truly cared about what happened to them.
2. Falcon and The Winter Solider.
A lot of the good things about Hawkeye, must have come from the ideas of this show. While I think it overall actually has less weaknesses than Hawkeye, I won’t lie to you and say that my ranking doesn’t at least in part have something to do with the characters involved, which will become more apparent in the next entry. That said, Falcon’s arc to becoming the new Captain America, was amazing. I like how it focused more on why he did it, rather than just instantly saying that Cap is out, so here’s his replacement, have fun. It also hit on some really serious issues that matter a lot in today’s world, and did it right, with the right actors, at the right time. The villain’s were also very compelling, and the return characters were very well handled in their new roles.
3. Loki.
Look, I’m gonna be honest, this is where the MCU started losing me. Loki is a great character, Tom Hiddleston is an amazing actor, but he’s not main character material, or at least, Loki isn’t. It kinda shows that Disney didn’t learn anything from making Mater the main character in Cars as that franchise kept moving along. Loki’s change of character also comes out of nowhere, and ultimately, everything that happened did little overall accept let people know that certain characters exist and to remind us that branching timelines will be a thing moving forward. The show does have some positives though, such as female Loki being absolutely incredible in every scene, and references in the latter part of the series were great fun, and unlike every other show in this phase, it was actually pretty funny. I do think it has some flaws worth mentioning, but overall, it was enjoyable, but not fantastic.
4. Wandavision.
Yeah, I’m not even sorry, I do not like this show. I know there’s this overarching theme, and everything happens for a reason, and it’s all really well planned out, I’ve read every positive take on twitter that’s out there, but I just can’t bring myself to care. The plots of each decade are too drawn out and take up too much time in the show, forcing it to rush through the parts of it that really matter, thus giving the entire thing pacing issues. It might be have been better if I hadn’t binged it, but I binged the rest of them without any real problems, so the fact that this show suffers so much when you do, when Disney had to know that people would when it was finished, just tells me that it wasn’t handled right. The ending is absolutely fantastic, and possibly brings in the most foresight of what could happen in this phase, and moving forward, what else there might be to look forward to, but to get to that point, I had to sit through too much of plots that I didn’t care about, to get the one I did. It was a nice experiment, but in my personal opinion, it didn’t pan out as well as it was intended to.
Now, I’m gonna talk about movies, also from best to worst, but I’m also gonna have some controversial opinions to boot, so get ready for that. Here we go!
1. Shang-Chi.
I love movies that take time to look into the cultures their characters come from, without making a big deal about it, because there’s no reason to. Shang-Chi I feel handles that very well. The only real problem I have with this movie, is that they put Trevor back into the plot, and he survived. That’s a reference I don’t think anyone needed, and he spends too much time in the film for being little else but a reference, and some comedy relief. The visuals, up until the end were fantastic, the comedy outside of Trevor was handled wonderfully, the characters are very likeable, and I can’t wait to see more of them, and the implications for future events were engaging. There’s nothing really wrong with this movie, which is great, because if I didn’t like it, it probably wouldn’t have inspired me to catch up with the rest of Phase 4 in the first place. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it.
2. Black Widow.
Yeah, I had to think about this one a lot. Since I’m only ranking three movies here, it made it even more difficult, especially since unlike most other people, I don’t think any of these movies are actually bad, there’s just parts of them that aren’t the best. The bad parts in Black Widow mostly come down to it trying to be like a James Bond movie, or a Mission Impossible, but not having the ability to do so, because of the way Marvel movies just always are. The introduction of new characters though, and the implementation of Black Widow I thought were handled really well, showing that Marvel and Disney really do know how to make movies and shows for characters without powers, really enticing. Obviously there won’t be anymore of these films, and for good reason, but if that’s how things have to end for Black Widow, minus ruining Task Master, which I think some people are taking way to hard, it was a good film.
3. The Eternals.
I don’t, actually have serious any issues with this film. The only reason it’s ranked third out of three, is because it does kind of drag here or there. However, the twists of the villain's being anything but you would think they are is really well done, and the Eternals themselves are well written, plus those mid and end credit scenes are implying some of the most interesting parts of Marvel lore that haven’t yet been introduced. But I really do enjoy the characters, the story they tell, the battles they have, and of course, the importance of life and death, and what it means for each of the characters, who all act differently towards it, despite them having similar ideals. Of course to, it is worth mentioning that we have a disabled and a gay hero confirmed, and they didn’t make a huge deal about either, and any time someone tried to, they were admonished pretty heavily for it, but I still like this film. It’s the weakest overall, but only just, and it’s still better than Iron Man’s sequels.
And that’s my list. Do you agree? Do you think I’m crazy for ranking them the way I did? Let me know in the comments below, and have a wonderful day.

Celeste Chapter 9: When Your Self Returns The Favour
Celeste already had a solid, self-contained story that reaches a wonderfully satisfying conclusion. When I heard that a bonus chapter was on its way, I wasn't really expecting it to have much story to it, because I didn't really think there was any significantly more story that needed to be told here. It was probably a little naive of me to think that, really. Regardless of how lovely the original ending was, of course Madeline's mental illness was never gone, and so it is indeed quite possible to show her facing a new, different struggle, since life can always throw you curveballs to make things worse again.
The thing is, it would have been so easy to write this chapter such that it simply rehashed the exact same kind of conflict the main story had between Madeline and her Shadow (that's what I'll be calling Part of Her in this post, just like I did in my other one, which I recommend you read first if you haven't already). But what's really great about chapter 9 is that that's not what happens at all. What we get instead is a story which serves rather beautifully as something of a mirror image of before, while also illustrating exactly why the conclusion that was reached last time and the message of that story was so, so important.
Spoilery levels of detail incoming, obviously, for both chapter 9 and the main story. If you haven't played Celeste already, you still very much should (but maybe only watch chapter 9 unless you're insanely good at platformers).
On its surface, chapter 9 is a story about dealing with grief. And that alone is great enough, although I'm not really the one to talk about why that particular aspect of it is so good, both because I can't personally relate to this kind of struggle, and because things being a dream mean it gets quite symbolic and I'm not super well-versed in interpreting that kind of symbolism. (I'd be really interested to see other people's thoughts on that aspect, though, if any exist!) But what I love most about the chapter and am going to talk about at length here is how the grief presents a new challenge for Madeline to overcome that serves as a basis for even more of the really delightful character writing of Madeline and her Shadow that Celeste is so good at. It explores the concept of Shadows - the part of you that you repress from the surface, which is what Part of Madeline is and why I'm calling her that - in ways that I'd never really considered before, even though I love this concept enough to have thought about it a lot outside of a Celeste context as well.
Madeline's regression
So, Madeline had grown very close to Granny in the intervening years, such that when Granny passed away, Madeline completely couldn't handle it and fell apart to the point that her depression and anxiety, which she'd started to have somewhat under control, got the better of her again. The chapter itself begins when at some point, things get so bad that Madeline goes and has an elaborate, deeply psychological dream born of her desperation to convince herself that Granny isn't truly gone somehow. Granny simply being alive again would be too obviously impossible for her to be able to fool herself with, though, so instead her mind comes up with the vaguely more plausible idea that the bird was Part of Granny (who knows? Maybe it actually was! But that doesn't really matter here because this is just in Madeline's head), and that if Part of Granny is still around then maybe Granny can somehow be brought back. Her justifications change all the time throughout the dream as to what exactly she is planning to do by chasing after the bird - bring Granny back, set Granny free, save Granny. At one point her Shadow tries to ask her what her endgame is, because she very clearly doesn't actually have one. She's just being driven by a desperate desire to not give up on Granny, somehow, however that can be achieved, because in the end all Madeline wants is to not wake up back to a world with no Granny in it.
It also appears that Madeline's grief has caused her to regress somewhat in the way she's thinking of her Shadow. Last time on the Mountain, Madeline thought of her Shadow as bad and monstrous and the source of all her problems that she'd be fine if she could just get rid of. By the end she'd learned that was wrong, that her Shadow was an unremovable part of her whom she needed to accept and work with and be kind to, because after all, she's still her. Presumably she spent most of the intervening years doing just that, as you'd expect after she'd learned how important that was. But here we can see Madeline slipping back into old habits from before the Mountain: "I'm done letting her hold me back", when her Shadow shouldn't have been holding her back for a while now; "Just shut up and help me for once", when she understood in the end that her Shadow has always been trying to help her; that one bit in the tutorial, which was all from Madeline's thoughts since this is a dream, saying "And Part of You won't help (she's the worst)", when no, she isn't, you should know this, Madeline.
The reason Madeline's started doing this again seems to be about her fervently disagreeing with the way her Shadow has been trying to get them to deal with Granny's death. Based on the conversations they have about it, it seems Shadow Madeline has been trying to run away from their pain by pushing them to just get over it and move on so that they'll stop hurting. (Which is to say, even outside of the dream in which she can actually talk to her Shadow, Madeline knows there's a part of her beneath the surface that's been secretly wanting that.) It's not the healthiest approach to try and act like Granny's death doesn't hurt when it still does, but at least there is an actual reachable end goal here of having moved on. This is Shadow Madeline trying to do her job as Madeline's defence mechanism and keep her functioning!
But Madeline can't stand the fact that a part of her wants to be okay with the fact that Granny's gone, so instead she lashes out at her Shadow again while trying to run away from her pain in the complete opposite direction, by running away from the very idea of Granny being truly gone in the first place. This is considerably more unhealthy than Shadow Madeline's approach, because doing so is straight-up not possible. Every reminder that Granny really is gone and there's nothing Madeline can do about it (symbolised, I assume, by the bird flying away from her and not wanting her to catch it) is just going to bring her pain back up to the surface and make things even worse as she tries harder and harder to deny it (she totally can catch that bird anyway, just you watch her give herself a tutorial on exactly how to do so). Partway through the chapter, the environment around her begins to distort and crumble, which I imagine is a representation of the damaging levels to which Madeline is trying to force herself to keep denying reality even as it becomes more and more obvious that she simply can’t change Granny's fate. Shadow Madeline's approach may not have been completely ideal, but Madeline's approach is far more decidedly not the right way to deal with this and is just making everything considerably worse.
Shadow Madeline's growth
So I know that in my previous Celeste post I linked at the beginning, I made a big point of how your Shadow is the weaker part of you. But chapter 9 made me realise something I’d never really thought about before: that that's not necessarily true! "The weaker part of you" is not inherently the definition of a Shadow; a Shadow simply the part of you that you suppress from the surface. That usually constitutes the weaker part of someone, since most people are usually trying to be strong on the surface, doing their best to overcome their problems and get through things in spite of the part of them that feels like they just can't. But that doesn't always have to be the case. In this chapter, Madeline is consciously thinking and acting in a way that is ultimately her being unable to deal with this and trying to take the easy way out. On the surface, she's being weak. But beneath that, her inner strength is still there - which is to say, in this context, her Shadow is still able to be strong. Not perfectlystrong, because she was still pushing a bit too much to just move on while ignoring how much it hurts, but she is being stronger than Madeline by trying to move on in the first place.
And it's only thanks to the more positive outlook and behaviour that her Shadow has developed, because of the kindness with which Madeline learned to treat her on the Mountain, that she can be this way now. Madeline may have regressed somewhat in the progress she made on the Mountain, but Shadow Madeline very much has not. It is so lovely to see how much she's still holding onto what she learned back then. She's a lot more willingly open about how scared and unnerved she is by where Madeline is going with this, because she knows that it's okay to be scared and that voicing that won't make Madeline ashamed of her or try to push her away any more. There's no more need for her to cover that up by being biting and cruel about Madeline's recklessness. It's not quite that Shadow Madeline has completely stopped with the negative self-talk that she used to be an embodiment of; right at the beginning, there's some brief hints of that - "you didn't even go to the funeral"; "sorry won't bring her back", representing the ways Madeline has been harsh on herself for falling apart. But very quickly, Shadow Madeline seems to remember that that isn't helpful and quits with it for the rest of the chapter.
Quite possibly this is because Madeline immediately leaps into her reckless crusade of denial, and Shadow Madeline realises that she needs to help her. Last time, on the Mountain, she was still on some level trying to do her job as Madeline's defence mechanism and keep her safe, but Madeline's lifetime of pushing her away and ignoring her made Shadow Madeline convinced that simply talking to her about it would never work, and so she needed to resort to force. This only made things worse, because Madeline is so stubborn that she'd only ever respond to that by pushing back even harder in the opposite direction and exacerbating the clash between them even more. But this time, Shadow Madeline knows that, so on no level is she ever trying to force Madeline to stop. She says it herself: "I'm not forcing you. I'm asking you." Madeline's spent long enough in the intervening years making an effort to listen to her Shadow's thoughts and not shut her away, and so Shadow Madeline is now completely able to trust that Madeline will eventually listen to her now as well. All she needs to do is be patient and keep gently trying to persuade her. There's one point during their second conversation where she seems to be about to get angry and forceful like she did so often last time, but then she catches herself, breathes, and continues more calmly, because she knows that anger won't make Madeline listen to her.
On the Mountain, trying to persuade Madeline to stop was not necessarily the right thing to do. Climbing the Mountain was reckless and dangerous, but it was actually possible and Madeline did have a fairly healthy reason to want it, to prove to herself that she could achieve great things and get emotionally stronger. On the other hand, running away from a loved one's death by convincing herself she can bring them back somehow if she just tries hard enough is not healthy and not possible and she does need to be stopped from doing this. Last time, Shadow Madeline was trying to stop Madeline partly out of genuinely wanting to protect her, but also a lot out of her own hidden fear of being left behind if Madeline made it. She was mostly just telling herself she was the pragmatic part of Madeline to cover up the fact that she felt scared and useless and Madeline probably didn't need her after all. However, this time, she's trying to get Madeline to stop this for no reason other than to help her, and she's going about it in a diplomatic, non-aggressive way that she knows will eventually work. Shadow Madeline really is being the pragmatic part of her now!
One might think that, while she's waiting for Madeline to stop being stubborn and face reality, it would also be pragmatic for Shadow Madeline to keep helping her through the platforming anyway just to try and keep her safe. And I feel like she would probably want to do that, hypothetically; the second time she disappears, it's not without a "Good luck", like she's hoping that Madeline will be okay and would be offering more than well-wishes if she could. But as she says just before disappearing the first time: "I can't help you with this". Not that she won't, but that she can't, as if she's literally incapable of it, which I think really could be the case. Madeline's irrational desire to keep going with this is something that she's only clinging to on the surface - meaning that her Shadow, the repressed part of her, is not the part of her that wants to do this at all. Since this is a dream and therefore all very abstract and psychological, the part of Madeline that isn't in denial over Granny's death literally cannot help her along the abstract representation of her surface denial. Both times Shadow Madeline leaves, Madeline is barely forcing her to and it really seems more like it's the Shadow's own choice to do so. Yet it's not that she's actively trying to be unhelpful at all; she just knows that she can't do anything else in this situation.
Saving her self
But... this is all just a dream, right? Madeline's not actually in any danger from all the insane platforming, so what would her Shadow really be keeping her safe from here, anyway? At one point, Shadow Madeline mentions that she's worried about Madeline getting "lost" up here, but at that point, she's definitely aware that this is a dream because she says as much a few lines later in the same conversation - so what does getting "lost" even mean in this context, and why is Shadow Madeline so worried about it?
...Consider Theo at the end, who completely understood that Madeline's anxiety and depression had probably got so bad that she wasn't in the mood to talk to him and was totally cool about that - but he at least wanted to know she was alive. As if he'd have a reason to worry she might not be when he knew her mental illness would be giving her a hard time. And, much more tellingly, remember the part just after Madeline catches the bird the second time and it's trying to fly away again. She tells herself once more that it's totally Part of Granny and then says, "If you have to go, then... Take me with you." Take her... to the place where Granny went?
Madeline was beginning to contemplate suicide.
Maybe only in a very abstract sense at that point, but the thought process was forming.
And Shadow Madeline knew it, because it's right at that moment that she reappears in front of Madeline and desperately tells her to stop. She makes her intent very clear later in that same conversation when she says, "I just want us to survive this." Shadow Madeline is the part of Madeline that wants to keep living no matter how hard it is, the part that Madeline herself was in danger of pushing away and ignoring because she was too caught up in her grief and denial of reality. By talking Madeline out of this the way she manages to do here, Shadow Madeline is successfully doing her job as a legitimate, non-twisted defence mechanism. She literally saves their life.
There is no way Shadow Madeline would ever have been able to achieve this if they hadn't gone to Celeste Mountain in the first place and learned what they did there. Of course, then they also wouldn't have met Granny, but even without Granny, something similarly traumatic could have happened to Madeline to send her down this same kind of spiral - and in that situation, her Shadow would have done nothing but push back and be cruel and harsh on her and make everything several times worse. But not here! Which is what is so incredibly lovely about this whole chapter. Shadow Madeline was able to save Madeline only because of the newfound strength and kindness she's gained since last time, which in turn is only because of the strength and kindness Madeline started showing her, back when Madeline had been the stronger one.
One innocuous part that I love is when you die a bunch of times on the last and hardest screen, there's a small exchange where Madeline is starting to doubt if they'll ever make it, and her Shadow encourages her to keep trying and that they can do this. It's such a great reversal of how things were when they were climbing the Mountain together in chapter 7. Back then, Shadow Madeline was the one with doubts and Madeline was the one affirming that they could make it, because then her Shadow still represented the repressed part of her that didn't truly believe in herself. But now, thanks to everything Madeline learned and has been employing since last time, that underlying core of her psyche has become strong! Madeline's Shadow can genuinely believe in her now when she herself can't. Her Shadow is able to push them to keep going even when Madeline is starting to think about giving up - and that's true not only very literally in terms of the abstract dream platforming they're doing together at the end, but also in a more meaningful, overall sense in terms of their life.
And I just think this whole idea is absolutely freaking beautiful?
Be kind to your Shadow, not just because they deserve it, but because a day might come when you'll need them to be kind to you.

Let’s Talk About Novae!
Tumblr media
Before we continue, please be sure you’ve read Ye Olde Disclaimer so you know what exactly is going on here!
And beware… SPOILERS AHEAD!
Let me tell you, I had to shorten what I originally wrote by a lot because I couldn’t shut up about it.
I wanted to start off this series with a webcomic very dear to my heart, which is the wonderful Novae by @kaixju, a duo of artists with a solid comics resume behind them. KaiJu have collaborated in the past on The Ring of Saturn, Mahou Josei Chimaka, and Inhabitant of Another Planet, which is the prequel to Novae. All are hosted on Sparkler Monthly, and I highly recommend reading them all. Not just because Sulvain and Raziol cameo in The Ring of Saturn as well as Mahou Josei Chimaka, which I thought was so good.
Novae follows the tale of two men in 17th century France, at the height of the scientific revolution. One is Raziol Qamar, the apprentice of the esteemed scientist Christiaan Huygens. Raziol is the son of a translator, and has a boundless love of astronomy. The other is Sulvain. Yep, just Sulvain, no last name so far. He’s a mysterious traveler that we know very little about yet, other than the fact that he is curious, lonely, and loves the stars just as much as Raziol does. You can see where this is going.
We get a number of strong visual hints as to Sulvain’s past or the truth of his existence, and surely more info will be revealed very soon. Novae has just completed Chapter 4, which very neatly contains the blossoming of a relationship between Sulvain and Raziol. I won’t summarize the story thus far, because I would much rather you go read the comic for yourself! Instead, let’s start looking at some of the key themes Novae gives us:
Loneliness
Belonging
Grief
The powerful multifaceted-ness of love
In Inhabitant from Another Planet, we are introduced to many of these key themes through a look into Raziol’s past- namely, his last intimate relationship. This, in addition to Sulvain’s flashbacks from Chapter Four, brings me to one of my favorite things about Novae: it is not afraid to be absolutely open with the character’s past loves. Novae is a story primarily about the love between Raziol and Sulvain, but it is just as much about the love that, inevitably, brings them together. Something I see often in the Romance genre is this idea that giving positive and meaningful context to a character’s past relationship(s) is somehow de-valuing their present one. Past relationships are sometimes treated as a stepping stone to get to the ‘one true love’, or a device to create hurt comfort. As if the current relationship needs to be the only good one the characters have ever had, and that’s what makes it meaningful. It’s not. And I’m not saying that stories where that happens are inherently bad, because that’s not true either. It needs to be handled delicately.
What Novae does is provide us with insight into the past relationships that built Raziol and Sulvain into the people they are now. That they have loved before, they love now, and they absolutely can love again. Romance is not devalued by the presence of other loves. And I love the insight into that. It tells us so much about them. Raziol’s relationship with Bevan provided a moment in time where he felt considerably understood and happy- temporarily, yes, but that temporalness led him to reconnect with his father. The feeling of otherness has not left Raziol in Novae, and it’s a pivotal part of why he connects with Sulvain. Raziol gravitates towards people that help relieve that. As for Sulvain, at this point we can only guess. I have my theories about his condition. There are many hints that he practices Necromancy, and even more hints that he’s either undead or immortal or something of that nature. Immortality and loneliness are inseparable from each other, classically. Raziol gives him something he can easily give back: familiarity and nostalgia, and the delight in learning new things.
But with immortality (or whatever it is that plagues him) comes the other classic issue: the fear of intimacy and, you know… getting attached. How many times can one obviously sensitive guy handle burying the people he loves? And yet, intimacy and comfort is all too enticing. Who can blame him? I’m interested in seeing where that goes once we know more.
Side note, I appreciate that this is the first time they see each other. Nothing is better than main couples having an embarrassing first interaction.
Tumblr media
And Sulvain is just kinda like [nods] “Yes, understandable. I, too, have that reaction to myself.”
Tumblr media
Another one of my favorite aspects of Novae is the attention to detail. So many tiny bits of the world are so carefully researched and considered, it makes my history-loving heart sing. Objects in a room can do so much in developing a character, and it’s so nice to see that so thought out for both Sulvain and Raziol’s father’s apartments. It is believable that a person lives there, and the word feels so tangibly like 17th century France. This makes is so easy to become immersed in the world these characters inhabit. We are not simply following their story on its surface, but becoming part of the environment that drives that story. Not only that, but the comic places such a loving emphasis on tiny, quiet moments.
Tumblr media
Every small gesture, every silent look they give each other means something so visceral and signifies a huge step forward. Soft and so often silent, but that’s what forces you to pay attention. The limited color palette deftly assists in this, every single page dominated by either a rich blue or yellow or a mix of the two. Blue, the historical color of divinity, cosmos and magic, and yellow, the historical color of happiness and knowledge.
I want to bookend this with a look at my favorite scene so far, which is related to my earlier point about Sulvain’s past love: the final scene of Chapter Four, in which we see a flashback showing Sulvain burying the mystery woman from his memory (Ohhhoh whooo could she be??). The color palette transforms stunningly. It’s not easy to show flashbacks without being heavy-handed and direct (or alternately, not being clear enough), but this color palette change does it in such a nice way that sits well with the feeling of the rest of the story. The burial shown is a traditional burning-pyre one, and this is the first time we get to see Sulvain displaying extreme emotions. He weeps for her, wailing, but silently due to his inability to speak. And it’s beautiful, not only because of the stunning imagery but also because it handles quick, simply addressed death within a story pretty fantastically.
Tumblr media
Sulvain’s relationship with this woman is powerful and meaningful. Her death is not the end of his story, but it does lastingly impact it. And he is allowed to mourn, and feel vivid emotions, and still grieve however many years into the future when these feelings affect the new connections he builds, and that is okay. Sulvain is not shamed for having complicated feelings, or not being completely ready to dive in headfirst into a new romance, but instead go slowly. Don’t forget, in the Novae timeline, Raziol and Sulvain have only known each other a few days (which is just my guess). It just makes me unbelievably happy that that understanding is there in the formative moments of their relationship, and it’s not used as a miscommunication drama fodder (a big pet peeve of mine). Each of them knows that they are both going into this with a lot of baggage, and part of a strong relationship is working through that together, and giving it time.
To briefly address another technical aspect, suffice to say dialogue is one of the most difficult parts of comic writing. There is a fine line between too much dialogue and just enough. Novae stays within this line wonderfully. As a reader, I never feel like the story is unnecessarily being explained to me. It takes advantage of the beauty of a visual medium and allows visuals to tell the story clearly and concisely, and all dialogue serves to enhance the story. It never feels too wordy, and everything is so astoundingly poetic that the dialogue itself works perfectly in tandem with the environment.
In conclusion, Novae deserves serious props for handling a slow, quiet narrative so well. It’s really difficult to manage that, especially in webcomic time when you generally update a page at a time. With longform webcomics, it’s easy to lose the reader’s attention from update to update if it feels like nothing is happening. But here, with every page, something huge is happening. It’s just a quieter, more contemplative something, and I look forward to it every time. I know whenever a Novae page goes up, it’s going to be gorgeous and I’m already completely invested in the complexities of these characters. Reading this comic, you can feel the love and care the creators have put into developing it. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Congratulations Crystal you’ve been accepted to Crimson Revolt as Xenophilius Lovegood!
↳ please refer to our character checklist
Oh my goodness -- your application blew us away. Simply reading through it you could see how much you’d thought about every single aspect of Xeno’s characacter and really got a handle about how you’d develop everything that makes him tick. I love the idea of him balancing on a razor’s edge -- between two seemingly distinct sides of his personality, and the headcanon and para sample about his reasons for joining Aversio were beautifully written and thought through. We’re so excited to see Xeno on the dash and to see you develop him through the course of this roleplay!

OUT OF CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION Hey, I’m Crystal! I’m 21, go by she/her, and am in EST time zone in the US.
ACTIVITY I’d say my activity would be a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. I can be on most nights, for at least a few replies.
TRIGGERS *removed for privacy
HOW DID YOU FIND US? Just through the tags, browsing for a quality group to join.
WHAT HARRY POTTER CHARACTER DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH MOST? As cliche as it may be, i definitely feel like i identified most with Hermione. I’ve always been rather bookish myself and, like her, had difficulty finding friends in a sea of judgmental people. I can relate to the comfort she found in solidarity and knowledge, while also attempting to balance and cope with her her desire for companionship and acceptance.
ANYTHING ELSE? This group looks fascinating, and i’m thrilled for the chance to be a part of it. :).
IN CHARACTER
DESIRED CHARACTER Xenophilius Lovegood
FACE CLAIM Jamie Campbell Bower
REASON FOR CHOSEN CHARACTER
Honestly, Xenophilius was never really a character that caught my attention during the movies or books. I loved Luna, of course, but thought that her zany quack of a father was mildly interesting, at best. That being said, your description of young Xeno fascinated me, because it was so far from the image of the older version, yet, the more i thought about it, such a believable transition. I’d never really put thought into what he must have been like during the first wizarding war, or his time at hogwarts, but i’m really excited to explore the untapped potential that lays here. I feel like i could really expand upon and develop him based on your given description, and that his unique personality could open up some really interesting interactions. I enjoy writing quirky characters, and have written quite a few in the past, but never ones with the darker, rebellious, loner aspects that you’ve attributed to Xeno. I’m really excited to write a character with such drastically different aspects of his personality. A combination of good-heartedness with a discontentment towards society is the basis for a wonderfully conflicted character who struggles with making the right choices in the horrible situation he’s stuck in. Being the accepting, tolerant, and loving person that i imagine him to be, but dealing with being an mistreated, misunderstood outcast would leave him constantly torn between attempting to merge with his peers and wanting to swear them off. I’m so excited for the chance to write Xenophilius, because every single one of his reactions will be teetering on a razor’s edge depending on the tiniest nuances of the interaction. Like i said, i never really gave him much thought before, but just from reading your bio of him, i’ve seen what a dynamic, complex, and life-like character he has the potential to be, and i’ve already got so many ideas i want to play out with him. Plus, the chosen faceclaim could not have been more perfect.
PREFERRED SHIPS // CHARACTER SEXUALITY // GENDER & PRONOUNS
I think Xeno would usually go by male pronouns, simply because they’re what people would opt for naturally, and he doesn’t really care what people view him as one way or the other. It’s just easier than correcting them and insisting on gender neutral pronouns would be more trouble than it’s worth to him. For Xeno, it’s less that he feels adamantly non-binary, but more that he feels gender to be irrelevant. Hence, whichever pronouns are applied to him, he just rolls with. While i fully intend to write him as a non-binary character, and make that aspect of him very prevalent, I’d prefer to use male pronouns, simply for ease of writing. Appropriately, he is also pansexual. Although, romance and sexuality have never really been high priorities for him. When he does fall in love, though, he loves fiercely and loyally. While yes, he does enjoy sex, it’s more about the emotional attachment and the passion than the physical pleasure, and he doesn’t really feel the need to have meaningless or constant sex. As for ships, I could see him being interested in Aurora Sinistra, for her intelligence and ambition. Other than that, i think i would have to see how his interactions with other characters go before seeing who he would be compatible with.

-A MOCKBLOG https://xeno-lovegood.tumblr.com/  (There are like 3 or 4 pages to look through, i think)
-A FEW HEADCANONS
He’s both a coffee and a tea person, depending on the day, his mood, and the weather.
Xeno doesn’t let anyone else cut his hair and, despite not being very good at it, insists on doing it himself. That is, on the rare occasions that he actually cuts it.
Among his many oddball collections, Xeno has countless gemstones and rocks, animal bones, foreign coins, and instrument pieces (strings, pegs, buttons, reeds, etc.).
When he was young, Xeno had a habit of tinkering. Taking apart, rebuilding, and remodeling his toys was one of his favorite pastimes. When he played outside, he devoted meticulous care to using twigs, leaves, and other found objects to build tiny home for woodland animals and “fairies”. His love for tinkering and, eventually, inventing never faded.
Xeno has always had a love for books, muggle comics, and especially fairy tales.
Xeno has insomnia, but doesn’t mind too much, as he prefers the night time anyway.
Xenophilius currently works at the Apothecary in diagon alley, but has been reprimanded by his boss a time or two for knicking a few ingredients. However, his charm and knowledgeable nature keep him from being fired.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
♔ If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it? Feel free to name it: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have some sort of something that induces a sensation of levity? A potion, perhaps, that lightens one’s mood and eases the min- oh, wait, no, i suppose that’s just alcohol then, innit? Something better! Something easier on the liver. All of the happiness, none of the hangover. Hm.. A charm, maybe? Oh yes, yes, that’s very good. A levity charm! I can see it now, ‘Instantly brightens mood, lifts spirits, and opens the mind! Wear it on bad days or, maybe just chuck it at people who need to lighten up.’ Plenty of those in the world, eh?” ♔ You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one other character and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you’d want with you: “Oh, well one person, that’s easy. Newt Scamander. The original clever critter catcher himself. I’m a massive fan of his work, brilliant man. A little closed minded on the existence of some lesser known magical creatures, but i digress. It’d be good to have an expert on board when trudging into the natural habitat of countless magical creatures. The object, now that’s the tougher one. Hm...it might be to my benefit to bring a weapon of some sort, i suppose. Muggles weapons, you know, are severely underrated. Wizards waving wands don’t give a single thought towards the merit of, say, a muggle gun, but in those woods, up against merlin knows what sort of creatures, i might just feel a bit more safe with one in hand.
♔ What kinds of decisions are the most difficult for you to make? “Difficult to say, really. Is ‘all of them’ an acceptable answer? I’m afraid I can be terribly indecisive, Point and case, right here, indecisiveness on the topic of being decisive. Funny, that. To give a more legitimate answer, I suppose decisions that intwine the fates of others? Choosing a path for yourself is one thing, but making a choice that affects others? Significantly more weighty. Oh! Or choosing what to make for brunch. Difficult indeed.”
♔ What is one thing you would never want said about you? “The worst thing i can imagine being called is generic. I can’t fathom what a boring life that would be.”
WRITING SAMPLE “How’s your dad doing these days, Philly?” Xenophilius opened his eyes and found himself looking at the poster on the ceiling. Through the smoky haze that filled the room, the members of Aerosmith stared back down at him. He had started adorning his ceiling with posters and hangings when all his wall space had become occupied. Between all of the band posters, stolen road signs, star charts, maps, anatomy diagrams, a listing of songbirds native to eastern europe, and a poster for something called the Chudley Cannons (which his muggle friends didn’t really understand, but they swore they had glanced the letters moving once or twice), there was scarcely any visible wall space left. His room couldn’t be described as tidy even at the best of times, but it was an organized chaos. To him, at least. Despite nearly every surface being littered with any and all manner of things, Xenophilius misplaced things very rarely. He may have lived messily, but it was a mess he understood.
“You know i’ve asked you not to call me that, Nina.” He replied, though with no real conviction. He’d accepted defeat in that battle years ago. He lolled his head to the side to face the girl. Her dark green eyes, a bit blood shot at the moment, and her amused grin met his gaze. He chuckled, realizing his eyes probably didn’t look much better. Their legs swung lazily off opposite sides of his bed, their heads and shoulders in the middle fitting comfortably together like simplistic puzzle pieces.
“He's doing okay, last I heard. Avoiding prison still, so that's good, I suppose.  I'm going to see him this weekend.” “Solid. Tell him I say hey.” “I shall. He asks about you, sometimes. Says you should come down and visit with me one of these times.” Even as he spoke the words, he knew the idea would never come to fruition. His father lived in a wizarding community. Owls filled the evening air, while lawns trimmed themselves and the sound of neighbors clinking together a few cold butterbeers filled the air. He could never bring her there. She shrugged. “Maybe.” He felt that she somehow understood, and was grateful that she didn’t press the issue.
Xenophilius’ parents had separated a few years back, and he now lived in the spacious and comfortable home of his muggle mother and her new husband. His mother was an impressive woman. When Xeno’s father had confessed to being a wizard, she took the news incredibly well and accepted having a wizard in the family with unprecedented indifference. When they discovered a few years later that their son was also magical in nature, it came as no big shock to anyone. His mother was an overwhelmingly accepting woman, and even as the only muggle in the household, she adapted and carried on with her life. Surprisingly, it wasn't the existence of magic or the collision of worlds that eventually pushed the couple apart, no. It was the drinking. Alcohol; the most potent and problematic of potions. She was hardly one to judge, having enjoyed and abused her fair share of substances back in the day. Xeno’s friends later swore that his mother’s habits were to blame for how strangely he turned out. But she had cut all of that out of her life when her son was born. His father, however, had a bit more difficulty. Xenophilius senior was not a bad man. By all accounts, he had a heart of gold, a smile that could light up a room, and a sense of humor that left his young son in fits of laughter. But he was a deeply troubled man. Eventually, his mother couldn’t take his father’s behaviour anymore, and they went through with a fairly civil and clean divorce. Although Xeno doesn’t see his father as much as he would like, they still get along well during the weekends they spend together. Knowing that his father is sensitive to the subject and would most likely be furious, Xeno keeps his drinking and drug useage a secret from his father.
A silence had fallen on the room. The girl, Nina, got up off the bed and strolled over to the record player. In one smooth motion, she lifted the needle, twirled the record between her fingers, and set it back in place. Zeppelin started crooning out of the beat up speakers and filled the room once again. “Sixteen, I fell in love with a girl as sweet as could be, It only took a couple of days 'til she was rid of me. She swore that she would be all mine and love me till the end, But when I whispered in her ear, I lost another friend, oooh.” Xeno sang quietly along, knowing every word by heart. The album was one of his favorites. He must’ve listened to it a dozen times since Nina bought it for him a month ago. It was one of the only presents he got that year for his 18th birthday. Fitting, since she was one of the only friends he had. She was fiddling with a few of the crystals and stones that littered his room. He loved that she never found his eclectic nature and strange collections offputting. Though, he supposed, it made sense. She wasn’t exactly your generic cookie cutter girl either. An onlooker might find it hard to believe that the two of them had met in a primary school chess club. Neither of them looked the type. Her, with her raven hair, shaved down the left side and falling in long natural curls on the other and a face adorned with half a dozen piercings. Him, with a mop of constantly tangled dirty blonde locks, a worn denim jacket, and the occasional guyliner. But they had sensed something in each other and gravitated towards one another almost instantly. He supposed they both drew comfort from sharing their outcast status. She was a quiet girl, soft spoken and concise. But she liked to listen, and god knows Xeno liked to talk. They worked well together. The judgement and name calling he received from his peers never really got to him, or bothered him terribly. It was just something that was impossible not to notice. He never in his life prioritized popularity or really stove to fit in. But it was nice, he had to admit, to meet a girl who had never called him a freak, or a weirdo like the majority of his other classmates. Naturally, he was eternally grateful to the girl for giving him someone around whom he could be himself. To an extent, at least.
Although he felt guilty about it every day, there was a part of his life that he could never share with his best friend. His quirks were one thing, but being a spell casting, potion brewing wizard was another entirely. He had a distinct feeling that even her threshold for weird wasn’t quite wide enough to encompass that little bit of information. As much as he wanted to tell her, he couldn’t risk scaring her away. It was bad enough being a social outcast, but being a wizard living among muggles made him feel even more disconnected from his peers. An acromantula in sheep’s clothing. Receiving his Hogwarts letter had been Xenophilius’ saving grace. He had been beyond dismayed to discover that he fit in no better with wizard kids then regular ones. He was still an unusual person, even by magical standards. But at least he didn’t have to hide his powers around them. He cherished his time at Hogwarts, reveling in the wondrous history and culture of the wizarding world. As much as the curiosities of the muggle world interested him, the wizarding world was infinitely more whimsical and beyond fascinating to him.
“Are you hungry?” Nina’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. Upon hearing her words, he suddenly realized that he was, in fact, incredibly hungry. He swung his lanky frame upward off the bed and slipped his feet into the worn black boots that sat bedside. “Starving. Wanna run down to the mart?” He asked jovially. “I haven’t got much on me” She replied, picking through her pockets. “I’m sure we can figure something out.” He countered, shooting her a grin that might have been ever so slightly mischievous. She knew him well enough to know just what that look meant. They’d gotten into and away with more than their fair share of trouble together. Xeno had racked up a somewhat lengthy record over the last few years of his life. He wasn’t exactly know to be one to follow all of the rules.  Never anything extremely serious, of course. Petty theft, vandalism, trespassing. Minor offensives, for the sake of rebellion, fun, or ticking off the local crooked cops.
They both laced up their boots and headed out. Xeno lit up a cigarette as they walked. It was less than a mile from his home to the nearest snack shop. The trip was a nearly daily routine for them. They could walk it with their eyes closed. It was their go-to place for munchies. Between puffs of his cig, Xeno was passionately telling Nina all about a creature called the Crumple Horned Snorkack. She listened contentedly, counting cracks in the sidewalk as it passed below them. She was used to his overactive imagination by this point. Assuming that all of his stories were simply make believe, she found them incredibly entertaining. It was an unusually warm day, even through the overcast. Xeno was practically cooking inside the leather jacket he had adorned before they left, but the garment served a purpose. It was riddled with inside, hidden pockets. In a practiced motion, he tossed his hair into an effortless mix between ponytail and bun as they strolled into the corner shop. “Evenin’, mate” Xenophilius called over to the spotty teen behind the counter. The kid didn’t even look up from his comic. Ha! This was going to be easy. Xeno couldn’t help but grin, strolling up and down the aisles. He made a beeline for the candies in the back. He had one hell of a sweet tooth. He ran a slender finger over the shelf, deliberating between chocolate and jelly babies. In the end he opted for both. With a glance over his shoulder at the checkout boy, his slipped the candy bar into his jacket, but held onto the jellies. It allayed suspicion to actually buy a thing or two. He’d picked up a few tricks over the years. He meandered around the store a bit longer, stuffing a menagerie of things into his pockets. Satisfied, he cast his gaze over to Nina, a couple aisles over. She gave him an affirmative nod. They met up at the counter, laid out a few snacks each, and Xeno paid. The boy behind the counter seemed unenthused, but had at least bothered to put the comic away for the transaction. “Thanks a bunch…” Xenophilius squinted at the boy’s name tag. “Scotty.” With that, he gave a wave and spun on his heel. Feeling like Bonnie and Clyde, the two were practically glowing with pride at the feat they had pulled off. They strutted towards the door. Scotty sneered at their backs, annoyed at having been troubled to do his job.
It was when they were only a few steps from the door, from safety, that it happened. They all heard the smack of plastic on tile. “Oy! Whatchu- Hey!” The boy behind the counter shouted angrily. Nina looked down, horrified, at the few snacks that had slipped from beneath her blouse. Xeno saw them too. “Shit. Let’s go!” He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her towards the door, but not before good ol’ Scotty pressed a switch behind the counter. They could just hear the lock click into place. Dammit. He swore under his breath, pointlessly shaking the door. He heard the angry employee threaten to call the cops, and began to panic. He couldn’t afford to get in any more trouble. Not right now. Not so soon before he was due back at school. Nothing could come between him and his getting to Hogwarts. With no other option coming to mind, he slipped out his wand. He tried his best to be subtle about it, but there was no hiding the stumpy branch, or the slight sparks it emitted as he hastily whispered the incantation. “Alohamora.” With a light pop, the door sprung open. Xeno bolted through it, dragged the girl behind him, and left the poor muggle boy gaping and bewildered.
For a bit, they ran without looking back. When Xeno felt that they had put enough space between them, he finally stopped. They both caught their breath in a secluded alleyway beside a bustling street. “Well,” Xeno started nervously, trying maybe a bit too hard to sound casual. “That was a close one, wasn’t it? The lock breaking like that,eh? I thought for sure we-” “What just happened?” The sternness in her voice stopped his words dead in their tracks. For the first time in a very long time, Xeno was speechless. She was staring at him in a way he had never seen before. There was fear behind her eyes.
“Xenophilius.” He winced. She never used his full name. “What was that back there? How did you do that?”
This was it, he realized. There was no hiding it from her anymore. If he lied, she’d know. And besides, not even the most cleverly constructed lie could be believable. There was no way to explain it other than the truth.  He was about to lose the only friend he had.
“Magic.” He stated simply. He pulled out his wand again, clearly this time, for her to see. To his surprise, she said nothing, so he went on. “I’m uh, a wizard, ya see. Spells and charms, potions and broomsticks.” As hard as it was to start, he felt like he had burst open a flood gate.  “I got to a special school. For wizards, like me, and witches. It’s called Hogwarts.” He was absolutely certain that she was going to freak out about all of this, yet he feel incredibly relieved to finally be telling her after all these years. He rambled on for a bit, speaking rapidly and excitedly. When he finally paused to gauge her reaction, he found that she was staring at him, mouth slightly agape. He couldn’t quite read her reaction, but his words had stunned her into silence. “Ah! H-here! Let me show you!” He took up his wand. He raised a free hand in a disarming gesture, silently reassuring her not to be afraid. He aimed at a nearby flower that was fighting its way through a crack in the concrete. A delicate looking thing, all the colors of a sunset. Swish and flick! “Wingardium Leviosa!” Nina let out a gasp. The flower rose, plucking itself from the ground and floated almost lazily through the air. He maneuvered it skillfully towards her. She froze as it approach. With a slight shifting of his wand, he landed it delicately in her hair. He smiled at her sheepishly, beyond apprehensive. What was she thinking? What if she just tucked and ran? He couldn’t blame her. What if he never saw her again. What if she called the cops on him, had his locked up in the looney bin?
“Magic? Real...magic?” She spoke, finally. He started to breathe again. Her voice was even, but in a controlled way. Her fingertips wandered up to caress the petals of the flower in her hair. She was quiet again for what felt like years. Then...a smile began to form at the corners of her lips. Xeno’s heart soared, or stopped, he wasn’t sure. Her face broke out into a full on grin.
“That’s fuckin’ wicked.”
-------------------------------------------------Present Day-----------------------------------------------
The shrill screams of the tea kettle pulled Xenophilius out of his thoughts. He discarded the Daily Prophet as he went to relieved the pot, tossing the paper onto the floor of his caravan home. From the front page, a vague headline announced yet another brutal attack from Voldemort loyalist. He realized that, lost in his thoughts, he had taken in very little of the article he’d been attempting to read. His mind had been wandering back to that day with Nina. He poured himself a glass of gurdyroot tea and took a long inhale of its fragrance. It had been four years since that day. A short time, relatively, but a lot can happen in four years. Wars break out, alliances form, fights ensue, and people die. The thing about Death Eaters, Xeno had quickly come to realize, was that they had no discretion. They couldn’t care less who or what got trampled on their violent paths. When they decided to attack, men, women, wizards and muggles alike were lain to waste. They represented cruelty in its most unbridled form.
He’d been thinking about Nina a lot, recently. About the day they met. About the day that he revealed that he was a wizard. But mostly? About the day that he saw the name of his hometown in the headline of the Prophet. The day he saw her name listed among all the other muggles who suffered the ultimate price in a wizard's war. The same day he join Aversio.

I've been writing an Avatar (the 2009 Jame's Cameron one, aliens ya know?) fanfic recently that has quite a bit of world/culture building. My problem is that I'm sort of flying blind since I don't know much about tribal lifestyles. I've tried to look for some books on the subject but haven't been having much luck. This is a bit of a long shot but would you happen to know any good books (non-fiction preferably) that could give an insight into this sort of culture?
Sorry we took so long to get to this!
A couple of pylons gave good answers, so please take a look at them under the cut!
constablewrites:
The biggest thing probably hampering your research is that tribes are not a monolith, so "tribal culture" isn't going to yield much info. Narrowing it down to a particular tribe or Nation will yield much more relevant results.
I'm trying to do a bit of digging to see if there was a particular tribe that inspired the Na'vi, but I'm not coming up with much. It seems like Cameron pulled most of his details from generic Native American stereotypes rather than the practices of any individual culture. The only specific reference I've found so far is that the language was partially inspired by Maori.
It doesn't look like WWC has touched on the film directly, but here's a post from them on writing Native American characters: http://writingwithcolor.tumblr.com/post/95592577327/can-you-please-explain-a-little-bit-more-abou
Bina:
First thing to consider-- this is a fanfic. Your fanfic! Once you've garnered all you can about Cameron's preset worldbuilding, you can embellish and extrapolate all you want so long as it connects well with the pre-existing canon (I'm assuming you want a solid handle on the canon worldbuilding, since your fic expands on the culture of the Na'vi).Think about this less as "writing for a tribal culture" and more "how do I fill in the rest of the puzzle that I was given in a way that's cohesive, logical, and is interesting to me?" The Na'vi's ideology and social structure are a really nice solid framework of "edge pieces" for you to start with  Lucky for us, Cameron gave us a lot of those two things! Use them as a starting point and a reference for how realistically your additions fit with the canon world!
For example, the ideology. The Na'vi place a HUGE importance on coexisting peacefully and eventually merging with the world around them. When they kill an animal for food, they thank it. Upon death, the "spirit" is passed into a tiny piece of the world, a seed, to continue on as a part of nature. They even have those weird hair-connector... thingies that lets them form a psychic bond with animals for an even CLOSER connection to the world around them. And we can't forget about the pseudo-intelligence collective of Eywa that they worship. This sense of coexistance with and massive respect for nature should permeate any bit you add to their culture. It's been established that it's a part of who they are as a people!  That's not to say you should focus entirely on their relationship with the world, but just know how important it is to them and how it shapes the decisions they make and their lifestyles. Now, the social structure. We see that there are two positions of importance in the main tribe (other tribes might possible have different setups). The chief, and the shaman-style woman. You can already throw in worldbuilding such as "the shaman position is always held by a woman, passed down by blood inheritance," or "the shaman chooses a successor from her tribe when she senses she is near death."
There are lots of other positions in the tribe open for filling in. They're pretty easy to come up with once you take into account the world that they're in. They have no technology beyond basic tools (spears, baskets, things that can be made with raw natural materials, paleolithic-level stuff). The world is rich and lush and full of life. They are omniverous. There are a /lot/ of them in one tribe alone. What might they need to sustain themselves in a place like that? Hunters? Gatherers? Warriors? Traders? Scouts for new territories? How does each 'job' see the others? Do they all respect each others' positions? Do the warriors look down on the gatherers? Or does everyone see the importance in ever role in the tribe? Is there a heirarchy or is everyone equal? Are there social benefits to being one thing over another?
When you're worldbuilding, flying blind is perfectly okay! Sometimes you never think to consider a topic until it pops up in your story and suddenly you need to think about it. You can't foresee or prepare for everything in advance. Sometimes things even change, because the story you want to write might conflict with facts or details you thought about prior, and you just really, REALLY want that one thing to happen so screw your previous worldbuilding plans! Whenever I'm adding new information to my worlds, I ask myself these questions, and I encourage you to do the same to make things easier, even when flying blind."Does this new tidbit /actively contradict/ existing facts?" If so, revise the tidbit, or change the things it contradicts to make it work."Do the implications of this tidbit clash with existing culture/ideologies/ideas?" This one's kind of abstract, so I'll give an example. Say I have a race of humble folk who care more for interpersonal relationships and taking care of each other than material wealth. Then I want to bring prosperity to their village, so I have them suddenly discover a ton of gold beneath their village! error they shouldn't care about the existence of gold beneath their feet because of their life values, and wouldn't do anything with that wealth even if they did find it. Of course, they could see the use of having money and use the gold to pay for new shoes for every child or something like that, or maybe one person goes on a selfish streak and betrays the rest of his village by selling them out. Forcing the concept can make for interesting scenarios! But be conscious of the ramifications of anything new you introduce. Sometimes it just doesn't work out and can make the reader go "huh? but I thought that..."
Finally, (and this is part of the fun of worldbuilding, at least for me) what are the /implications/ of the tidbit itself? If you think of a cool new idea and realize just how much it impacts other things, and also the implications of the idea, you can go on a huge, explosive worldbuilding streak. That's happened to me tons of times, where something as simple as "magic only works during the full moon" jumps to "the highest number of crimes must also happen around that time, by opportunistic mages" and then "do people offer insurance that's active during those days to prey on the paranoid?" and "how paranoid DO normal people get during the full moon? Are mages locked up prior to the full moon by their friends and families 'for their own safety?' do mages find this unfair? ARE THERE MAGE RIGHTS PROTESTS? How does the public feel about that? Does the government do anything about it? Who does the gov't favor more?" etc etc etc. Embrace those moments! Taking a moment to think about the impact and implications a new chunk of worldbuilding has on your world can explode into a wonderfully productive time for your fic/story/universe.To actually answer your question I'll give you at least one link to something to read. It's a wikipedia article on the Paleolithic era, particularly human social structure during that time. The level of technological advancement of the Na'vi is about equivalent to that era on Earth, so it should give you a rough idea of what to start thinking about. Being wikipedia, it's a fairly dry and dense read, so my apologies about that...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic#Social_organization

The Last Jedi spoilers below the cut
Okay sooo this movie was just really weird to me?? Like was it a good movie? Definitely. Was it a good star wars movie? I really don't fucking know tbh. Gonna have to watch it again to form solid opinions. For now, I'm just gonna talk about the good and bad.
The Good:
It seems to me that put the reylo story to rest which is brill!!! Like I know that it seems like it was a pro reylo movie (and yeah, there were parts like the shirtless scene and the hand holding scene that were) but it seemed to me that by the end of the movie they were through with the kylo redemption arc. Rey shut the door on his stupid face, it looked final. And if after this they still try to redeem him I will literally fucking scream
I know a some people didn't like the way the Luke/kylo story was handled but I found it interesting. It's always been implied that the dark side can make you do things that you wouldn't think of otherwise, draws on more intense, darker feelings like pain and fear, and I think that's exactly what happened with Luke. He got scared and succumbed and for a split second was ready to kill the piece of shit kyle (should've done it tbh). This led to him being bitter, and I can understand that too. The guilt obviously weighed heavy on his conscience. I would have preferred a movie where Luke hadn’t turned into a bitter old man, but as it is I didn’t absolutely hate his arc I guess.
I mean, they already fucked up the perfectly happy expanded universe endings so I’ve been resigned to the bitter fates of the original trio.
I also quite liked Rey trying to figure out her past, and I especially loved that she turned out to be descended from "no-one." It's the theory I've been hoping was true (the other ones I wouldn't have minded was her being related to obi wan or qui-gon). It's a message I thought was cool: anyone can be force sensitive, anyone can be a Jedi. Ofc, kyle might have been lying and she might still be a skywalker and this whole reylo thing might be a gross ploy by rian to imitate the incest stuff from the original movies in which case i will personally find rian and stab him
Quite liked the theme of letting the past go. So many of the characters are stuck in their pasts, and the first order existing sort of hinges on the ideas of the original empire so the overarching theme of letting the past die resonated. It applies to fans too: purism gets you nowhere.
The fight sequences were all amazing. Luke fucking owning kyle's ass made my life!!!!
SPACE MOM USING THE FORCE TO GET BACK TO THE SHIP MY HEART ALMOST BURST
Yoda!!!!!!!!!!! Listen, I’m just a bitch for OT characters showing up
Holdo being a badass and just straight up flying her ship at lightspeed through the first order barrage like wow how fucking iconic??
Rose being the sweetest ever (Kelly Tran played her to perfection, working wonderfully with the material she was given). She was allowed to be soft, sweet, kind and capable, strong, badass all at the same time, which was so great. And her crush on Finn as well as their dynamic was adorable.
The Bad:
Ho my god- the reylo. The Force Skype thing was literally a fanfiction plot. The angsty longing gazes from Kyle's end made me gag. The hand holding thing?? The elevator scene?? Why would you make me look at that with my own two eyes whyyyy. Thank God it's (probably) over
WHY TF WAS FINN GIVEN SUCH A THROWAWAY PLOT
It just boggles my mind??? That whole sequence where he and rose go to that planet to get the hacker guy took my out of the movie completely. It almost felt like prequel levels of nonsense. Were both rose and finn as a pair entertaining to watch? Yes. Would they be good as a couple? Yeah sure. Is it super fucking great that they're an interracial couple? Yes!!! Doesnt fucking erase the fact that it felt like that whole plot and Rose (as much as I love her and as much as I'm happy she exists) too was created because they didn't know what to do with Finn.
And why tf was there so little interaction between Finn and Poe?????????? Look, I get that Disney can't make them a couple if they don't want the movie to be banned from some (bigoted) countries (including mine unfortunately). Movie making is a business, whatever I get it, but the interactions between these two were part of why I (and so many others) liked tfa so much. That whole hacker planet plot should either have been Finn and Poe's, or else Finn should have had a plot back on the ship. Ughhhhhh
And also, making Rose and Finn kiss/a couple basically just ensures that Finn is never going to end up with Rey and I'm fine with that only if she ends up single by the end of this series. Or like, just as long as she's not with fucking kyle ron. I'm just terrified that that's exactly what's gonna happen though. Let's hope j.j doesn't let us down.
Other stuff:
Did anyone else notice that Rey had taken the Jedi books from the temple. Is that why Yoda was chill with destroying the temple?
What was the Dark Side seaweed pit about? It was a pretty cool sequence but like??
Pretty disappointed with snoke tbh. Went into the movie looking for answers and came out with absolutely nothing. Where did he come from? Why is he the supreme leader? Why is he the supreme leader if he’s a little bitch who was beaten by actual child kylo ren? Why wasn’t he 15 ft tall smh
I’m really sad that Luke’s gone, but I’m pretty sure he’ll appear as force ghost in the next movie. He has to.
How are they gonna deal with Carrie Fisher’s death? They’ve apparently said that they don’t wanna bring her back through cgi so does that mean they’ll have to kill her off? She was supposed to have a pretty big part of ep9 but I don’t see what they can do besides killing her off. They could send her off elsewhere but it would be pretty odd if she was alive and she didn’t appear through the movie.
ANyway I cried every scene she was in

WEEKEND TV HOT FILM PICKS!
Check out my guide to the top films on TV this weekend and the best of the rest. Enjoy!
LATE FRIDAY 3rd NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
W @ 2100      Dead Calm (1989) ****
Tumblr media
If you are thinking of watching “Adrift” or any of the other modern water based suspense / thriller / scary movies - forget them all. Dead Calm is the ultimate and only film of this type that is required. I have very fond memories of this suspense thriller. Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill are a couple on a sailing trip in the pacific trying to forget something terrible in their past. They happen upon a stranded ship with a man on board. Billy Zane is Hughie, the sole survivor on the vessel who just so happens to be a mass murdering, wife seducing general all round bad egg. Soon his true nature is revealed and they fight for their ship and their lives. Kidman is so young in this and was a bizarre casting gamble to pair up with the much older Sam Neill - but she is fantastic and I am always impressed with her handling of the character and the script. Dead Calm’s success lies in its atmosphere and is serenity. If you are looking for a well-acted, well shot, haunting suspense thriller then this is right up your street. Even with a cast of just three actors - this film is thoroughly engrossing.
Horror @ 2255       They Live (1988) ****
Tumblr media
I love a bit of John Carpenter in my film diet. Especially 1988 cult classic They Live. Rowdy Roddy Piper is Nada - an out of work construction worker who hits the city in search of work. He comes across a pair of sunglasses which reveal the world as it REALLY is - the people controlled by the rich, a mass media saturated world where people are driven into consumerism fuelled pacification. Government messages are revealed in stark, bold black and white text on billboards, TV and newspapers - showing the messages of “OBEY” and “CONFORM”. Even more sinister is the revelation that the upper echelons of society are populated by an evil exploitative alien race. The constant Carpenter score is our companion throughout almost all of the film which works wonderfully. Funny in parts, action and fights galore - this is a great Cult Classic Carpenter.
Horror @ 0050        eXistenZ (1999) ****
Tumblr media
From Carpenter to Cronenberg. Another favourite Director. No better course that a slice of reality vs. illusion dark sex-tech creep fest that eXistenZ. A game designer is on the run from people intent to kill her must play her new virtual reality game with a Marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged. We follow them both as they tumble down the rabbit hole of the virtual world questioning reality at every turn. Mysterious, thrilling and a down right mental - this is one of Cronenberg’s films I always enjoy returning to.
Best of the rest:
Disney @ 1802       Aladdin (1992) *****
Film4 @ 1815         Runaway Jury (2003) ****
TCM @ 1855          The Others (2001) ****
CBBC @ 1900        How to Train Your Dragon (2010) ****
ITV2 @ 2100          Bridesmaids (2011) ***
5* @ 2100              21 Jump Street (2012) ****
TCM @ 2100         Mad Max (1979) *****
TCM @ 2250         Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) *****
Film4 @ 2250        Boy (2010) ****
SATURDAY 4th NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
TCM @ 2100     Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) *****
Tumblr media
The Road Warrior has always been my stand out favourite Mad Max film and probably always will. Raw, unforgiving and unglamorous. The Road Warrior ticks all the boxes when it comes to action and thrills. Tom Hardy sits very comfortably as our new steely eyed and distant antihero, but after watching The Road Warrior again last recently, Mel is always the one true Mad Max. The new outing of Fury Road treads an appreciative step forward in this post-apocalyptic world where the hunt for fuel is endless and fraught with danger.
I was surprised when I found out the original film was released dubbed for the American market due to the “Heavy Australian accents and slang” how times have changed! Anyway, thank the maker that didn’t happen here. That would have really racked me off. Thankfully it didn’t stay that way for long. I love the original Mad Max which sets up the back story for our loners fall into his nomadic existence looking for fuel to continue on his road to nowhere. This sequel / new start has a bigger budget, bigger ideas and some of the best physical vehicle stunts and effects I’ve seen. I’m still left wincing at every elaborate crash and explosion. The stunt people certainly earned their keep on this film.
In his search for fuel Max does a deal with a group at a fuel refinery to drive the tanker as they flee for pastures new. They are plagued and chased by an evil gang headed by the scary looking, hockey mask wearing, Lord Humungus who is intent on killing his way to the fuel they are protecting.
The final chase sequence is always impressive and even after 35 years it holds up very well. On a scrubbed up Blu ray version it feels as fresh as the first time I saw it. Thrilling, action saturated, road war carnage; Max Max 2: The Road Warrior is one of my favourite action films.
Film4 @ 0100      Dog Soldiers (2002) ****
Tumblr media
British director Neil Marshall brought us the impeccable scare fest Horror film The Descent in 2005 and here is his 2002 directorial debut: Dog Soldiers. With just a meagre budget and a great idea Marshall managed to put together a great little Horror film.
A British Army squad go on a training mission in the Scottish Highlands against a Special Ops team. They talk about local folk tales of grizzly happenings in the area, but these stories become a dangerous reality as they come across the bloody remains of the Special Ops team. Something part man part animal is after them and will stop at nothing to kill them. They go on the run for their lives dishing out oodles of frights, shocks and plenty entertainment along the way. A must watch for fans of British Horror.
Best of the rest:
Syfy @ 1500       The Last Starfighter (1984) ****
Disney @ 1600   Aladdin (1992) *****
Syfy @ 1900       The Addams Family (1991) ***
ITV2 @ 1920       The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) *****
Syfy @ 2100        In Time (2011) ***
TCM @ 2255       Poltergeist (1982) *****
SUNDAY 5th NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
C4 @ 1715      Paddington (2014) ****
Tumblr media
Who would have expected a live action / CGI cross over of the much loved story of Paddington would work - but it absolutely does. It’s charming, heart-warming and walks the line of sentimentality that never goes too far, it honours the original material and brings an altogether joyful experience to all that watch it. A sure hit with children and adults alike, with enough sequences of absurd action and moments of effective comedy that keep the flow continuously. A truly lovely film. Don’t miss it.
Syfy @ 2100       28 Weeks Later (2007) ****
Tumblr media
When I first found out that someone was attempting to make a sequel of Danny Boyle’s amazing Brit zombie flick 28 Days Later I was prepared for an utter disaster but 28 Weeks later is a pretty solid sequel picking up the original story line 28 weeks after the initial infection. In a deserted London, the Military are tasked with re-housing 15,000 civilians into a secure compound so they can begin rebuilding their lives. We follow Robert Carlyle’s Don and his children Andy & Tammy as they settle into their new home. The calm soon turns to panic, blood drenched carnage as another outbreak threatens the lives of everyone. As the military loses control and make increasingly more difficult and ultimately poorer decisions the film picks up even more pace adding a nice element of human failings and moral choices. The camera work and direction really adds to the panic and terror as our eyes dart from shot to shot. This film is gripping, fast paced and packed with relentless zombie terror with some great edge-of-your-seat moments. Admittedly it doesn’t have the intimacy and originality of the first film but it still hits the mark as a stylish, action saturated zombie gore fest that takes pride and place next to the original as a great compliment to the superb first serving.
Horror @ 2240     Starry Eyes (2014) ****
Tumblr media
One of the best horror films to come out of 2014. This brings a new take on the traditional and kept me captivated throughout. It starts out pretty slow but with its great synth score and Los Angeles at night looking fantastic - I was hooked. It can be quite brutal in parts and that works here but certainly not one for the squeamish. It wears its message blatantly on its sleeve - no subtleties here but who cares. A cracking Indie Horror.
Best of the rest:
Syfy @ 1230         The Addams Family (1991) ***
Syfy @ 1430         Splash (1984) ***
C5 @ 1700            Grease (1978) ****
BBC2 @ 2100       My Scientology Movie (2015) ***
Comedy @ 2100  Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) ****
TCM @ 2100        Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) ***

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #180 - Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed
Tumblr media
Spoilers below.
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: Yes.
Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: No.
Format: DVD
1) So with the first film writer James Gunn had written a darker script meant to poke fun at the original series and gain a PG-13 rating, but after the cast signed on this was changed into a family friendly film. With the sequel, writer Gunn returns and this time everyone knew what kind of movie they were going to make from the beginning (which relates to some more solid structure in this film than the last).
2) Scooby-Doo Theory holds that whoever the protagonists talks to first is the person who did it. The first person they talk to in this film is Alicia Silverstone’s Heather Jasper Howe who ends up being the bad guy.
3) Okay, Coolsville opens up a museum exhibit about Mystery Inc. and their past foes. It is said that the gang, “donated,” the costumes. But…why are the costumes their’s to donate? Aren’t they police evidence? Do they steal the costumes from every crime as some sort of weird trophy and stash them all in a storage locker somewhere? Am I overthinking this? Let’s move on.
4) What the heck!? Seth Green is in this movie!?
Tumblr media
5) Linda Cardellini continues to be absolutely excellent as Velma Dinkley, but one side we get to see in this film that we didn’t in the first is lovesick puppy Velma. Her crush on Seth Green’s Patrick is portrayed as cute, sweet, honest, and is just enjoyable to watch. I think Cardellini is great in both of these films and gets an even greater chance to shine in this one.
6) I always liked The Evil Masked Figure in this film.
Tumblr media
I think it’s purely a taste of aesthetics. I like the metallic head, the hair, the cloak. He’s not really a character so much as a plot device and he does pale in comparison to the classic monsters which populate the film, but I just dig the design.
7) I think the early action set piece of Shaggy and Scooby getting pulled around the museum by the Pterodactyl Ghost is a little stagey. It FEELS like they’re on a film set as opposed to even the fun of the cartoon chases. But that just may be me.
8) What the fanboy in me loves about this film is the way it brings in all the classic monsters from the old cartoons. James Gunn is a fan himself and it shows because - much like he is able to fill up Guardians of the Galaxy with notable characters, references, and alien species - he brings in a lot of A-list villains from the show. The Black Knight Ghost and the 10,000 Volt Ghost in particular were always favorites of mine and it is REMARKABLY fun to see them, the Tar Monster, the Zombie, Captain Cutler’s Ghost, and The Miner 49-er brought to live action (among others).
9) Okay, so Heather Jasper Howe’s reporting is 100% slander and illegal. She is taking everything Mystery Inc. says out of context to make them appear bad in the public light. Yes, she’s the villain, this is part of the plan. But unless you’re working for an obviously biased news source like Fox News you would not be allowed to get away with this. Still, when I start to question the realism of a Scooby-Doo movies the whole thing falls apart.
10) The primary conflict for Scooby and Shaggy in this film is them questioning their worth/value to the team. This makes for surprisingly interesting character conflict and an equally surprising emotional arc for the film. I like it!
11) According to IMDb:
The original Scooby-Doo episode dealing with the pterodactyl ghost featured a villain and motive that were quite different. The pterodactyl/hang glider costume was used to smuggle pirated music, with the small-town mayor behind the whole scheme.
Tumblr media
12) I cannot begin to express how funny my tiny eight year old self found this joke.
Shaggy [after the gang goes through all their notes, which Scooby has been jotting down]: “Scooby-Doo, what’s your conclusion?”
Scooby: “Bunny!”
Tumblr media
13) I have a feeling this film had a product placement agreement with Burger King. Scooby was drinking from a Burger King cup earlier and then this:
Tumblr media
14) I may have watched The Mummy too many times.
Fred: “What could possibly happen by ringing a doorbell?”
Tumblr media
15) So Shaggy messes with a record player and “Baby Got Back” starts playing. Which begs the question: WHO ON EARTH HAS A VINYL OF “Baby Got Back”!?
Tumblr media
16) According to IMDb:
At one point in the film, Scooby and Shaggy are pretending to sing into a toilet brush "microphone". The song they are actually singing is Strangers in the Night - Frank Sinatra's version featured the improvised scat lyrics, "Scoo-bee-doo-bee-doo", lyrics which then-CBS executive Fred Silverman chose as the name of the new cartoon series. The original name for the dog was "Too Much", a popular catchphrase of the era.
17) The entire Black Knight Ghost chase through the mansion is very cartoonish, which I mean as a compliment. It feels like it is ripped straight out of an old episode of the cartoon, speaking again to the great way James Gunn handles the source material.
18) Why is Daphne wearing a shirt with her own face on it?
Tumblr media
19) Again: this made me laugh so hard as an eight year old.
Black Knight [after Velma kicks him in the nuts]: “Right in the round tables!”
20) This film was released in 2004, can you tell?
Fred: “…this mystery goes down like a dot com and Coolsville digs us again!”
21) I ship Velma and Daphne. I have a feeling so does James Gunn.
Tumblr media
(Screenshot taken of a GIF originally posted by @ezekiels)
22) Linda Cardellini gets to be exceptionally funny in this film for one BIG reason:
Tumblr media
Patrick: “Do you have to go to the bathroom?”
Velma: “No, I can’t in this outfit.”
23) The Faux Ghost.
Tumblr media
This is a wonderful concept featured in the film which once again shows off just how deeply familiar writer James Gunn is with the source material. Just the idea that a bar for all the people Mystery Inc caught exists is wonderfully fun. The art design and characters all stand out in a wonderfully fun scene.
24) Whoa, this is pretty deep for Scooby-Doo 2.
Old Man Wickles [about being a masked villain]: “We needed people to believe we were different than we were. Maybe because we believed there was something wrong with who were in the first place.”
This also means the song which plays in the club - “Thank You For Letting Me By Myself” - has much more meaning than one might initially expect.
25) This line was improvised.
Velma [after she lets out a squeak]: “That was my outfit, I swear.”
26) It’s kinda fun seeing Seth Green go into psychotic badass mode on this goon. My primary experience with him is through “Buffy” where he mostly plays his character as emotionally controlled. This is a fun change from that. Also, Shaggy gets in a sick burn because of it.
Shaggy [after seeing Patrick act a little crazy]: “But we gotta make like your personality and split!”
27) What even is this movie!?
Old Man Wickles [after Scooby gives away his position hiding in a bush]: “Darn bushes toweling at me again.”
AGAIN!?
28) Ah, the potion gag.
youtube
So there was a lot of work trying to figure out exactly what gags to use. At one point, Scooby was going to turn into his hand drawn counterpart as a replacement to a much less favored gag of Scooby turning into George W. Bush. The filmmakers didn’t want to compare 3D Scooby with 2D Scooby so they had him turn into the Tasmanian Devil instead. It’s kinda random and pointless, but not unenjoyable. It’s kinda fun to watch, it just has nothing to do with the rest of the plot.
29) In this moment, I am Shaggy.
Shaggy: “We’re gonna die!”
Daphne: “Think positive!”
Shaggy: “We’re gonna die quickly!”
30) Okay hold on a second: the monsters share the same hatred of Mystery Inc. that their portrayers had? But why? They’re not the same people are they? Do they have the memories of their human counterparts? Are they the vision of the criminals who portrayed them fully realized?
Tumblr media
31) The old high school clubhouse scene is a surprisingly poignant moment of vulnerability and character interaction for Mystery Inc. The flashback - even though it’s a little cringe worthy seeing the young Mystery Inc (with their awkward imitations of the main cast and weirdly dubbed over voices from the main actors) - allows for us to understand the core of their relationship. In a lot of ways, this is the beating heart of the film. Mystery Inc and the friendship they have with each other.
32) Again: I am Shaggy.
Shaggy [while being chased]: “This is tied for the most terrifying day of my life!”
Velma: “Tied with what?”
Shaggy: “EVERY OTHER FREAKING DAY OF MY LIFE!”
33) HOW DID THE BLACK KNIGHT GET A GHOST HORSE!? Wouldn’t they need a horse costume to do that?
Tumblr media
34) Ah, Buffy speak used by a “Buffy” actor.
Daphne: “Taste the pain Mr. Glowy Ugly Thing!”
35) I love this.
Velma [after Shaggy and Scooby say they’re trying to be more like the gang]: “That’s funny. I always wanted to be like you guys.”
This speaks greatly to just how freaking important Shaggy and Scooby are to the group. They’re the beating heart, it’s called Scooby-Doo for a reason. And the fact that Velma is able to so honestly and believably say she wants to be like Shaggy and Scooby is a surprisingly touching moment in the film.
36) It only took Velma 45 years to admit this.
Velma [after her glasses fall off]: “I’ve got to consider contact lenses.”
37) According to IMDb:
The Cotton Candy Glob is a tribute to the Cotton Candy Monsters who appeared in the story "Goop on the Loose" in the Scooby-Doo comics published by DC Comics, where the culprits were a child and two henchmen trying to get revenge from being fired from a carnival. The Cotton Candy Monsters were mentioned in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo: Terror, Thy Name Is Zombo (1989).
38) I JUST got that the game of keep away they play with the monster making control panel reflects the game of frisbee we saw them playing in the flashback.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @leaveatraill)
39) Tar Monster seems like he has a ridiculous amount of power. Like he can single handedly nearly kill ALL of Mystery Inc. Why not just release the Tar Monster on the world? I feel like THAT’D be a better plan!
40) The Evil Masked Figure is unmasked and revealed to be Heather Jasper Howe. But her hair and makeup are perfect. Shouldn’t she have - like - helmet hair or something?
Tumblr media
41) Scooby running to Shaggy like they haven’t seen each other in ages is totally unearned. Shaggy just put on a mask and took it off and Scooby acts all excited! But, it’s still kinda nice.
42) What the heck? This film has a secret mini movie!?
youtube
A commercial!?
Much like the first Scooby Doo film, Monsters Unleashed is hardly a cinematic masterpiece but the kid in my absolutely loves it. The characterization is continually strong (as is the acting), it’s a lot of fun to see the old monsters in a live action format, and it’s just an enjoyable 90ish minutes. There are movies which have aged worse so if you have fond memories of this or are a fan of the Scooby-Doo franchise, give it a watch.
