The Murder of Yiannoulla Yianni
Yiannoulla Yianni, known to friends as Lucy, was a 17-year-old schoolgirl living in North London.
On 30 August 1982, Yiannoulla had spent the morning at home with her mother and at about 12.30 they went together to the shop owned by the family nearby to take Yiannoulla's father lunch. At 1:30 she returned home to prepare dinner with her mother stay at the shop. When her parents returned at about 3 pm they found Yiannoulla dead, she had been subject to a terrifying ordeal at knifepoint before being raped and murdered. Yiannoulla's jewellery had been scattered on the stairs and her body was half-naked. A neighbour had seen her speaking to a man in his early 20s and had heard a scream about 20 minutes later. More than 1000 witness statements were taken, a large series of public appeals were made and reward money was offered. Despite all of this what really happened to Yiannoulla remained a mystery for decades.
34 years after was Yiannoulla found dead a 56-year-old man was arrested for her rape and murder. James Warnock was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 25 years for the attack which was described as cruel and brutal. Warnock had lived just half a mile away from the family's home and had been 22 at the time of the attack.
Warnock managed to evade justice for 34 years despite continuing to live in a local area and was only caught when his DNA was matched by chance. When Warnock was caught sharing indecent images of children on the internet he was forced to give a routine DNA sample. The sample matched a semen sample taken from a bedsheet from the 1982 crime scene. At the time of the murder, DNA testing have not been invented and the staff will that help secure the conviction was only recovered from a bedsheet in 2003.
