This is your passive aggressive reminder that being able to lie really well doesn't, under no circumstances, have to always be related to psychopathy. Sometimes you just have really strict, abusive parents that want you to be a prodigy instead of a child and therefore if you want to get away with doing normal child stuff, you have to be able to come up with a believable lie in a matter of seconds and deliver it flawlessly, to cover up the fact that you were child-ing instead of prodigy-ing.

Something about characters who see themselves as weapons. As swords and shields and bullets. Characters who serve one purpose and are numb to themselves. Characters who can barely recognize themselves as human anymore, who can’t fathom an ‘after’ to whatever war they’re fighting.

There’s a specific kind of tragedy in realizing that no one hates you but also you’re everyone’s second choice. That no one really thinks about you unless they’re forced to. That everyone occupies so much more space in your mind than you do in theirs. And if you vanished no one would really be sad. They wouldn’t be happy either, they just wouldn’t care.

personally i think katara is completely within in her right to be angry at and never forgive the man that killed her mother and in turn zuko is also within his right to be angry at and never forgive his abusers who gaslit manipulated scapegoated maimed banished and tried to kill him multiple times and neither of those things would make katara and/or zuko lesser than or bad people

My brain made a theory while I was procrastinating.
Katara divorced Aang because he neglected his other two children, when Tezin was little. That’s why Tezin doesn’t visit her so much (he was more on his dad’s side) (I know it doesn’t have to be because of this but I don’t care)
So she became a divorce mom around her forties.
Azula went to therapy (a lot), worked on herself, and is now sane, happy and working for Zuko because she knows how politics works on the Fire Nation.
For whatever reason (I’m not going to do all the work) Azula ended up having to go to the Southern Water Tribe.
Katara is there, she sees Azula, she yells at her etc. but Azula tolerates all of that and unexpectedly says “I’m sorry”. Katara was shocked. Azula gave her a little explanation and Katara accepted her apology.
(This could happen in many ways like Azula saying “It was war; I’m not going to apologize” or whatever. The thing is the mutually hate is gone)
Azula is doing whatever she has to do there and they start to get along pretty well.
One day they went to dinner, Katara didn’t have to take care of her children…they made out. All the drama happened but they ended dating and Azula ended being a great stepmother.
Unfortunately she died before Korra the series happened.
So now we have a credible Azutara storyline in the LOK timeline.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk <3

Crack AU where Ty Lee escapes Boiling Rock and retreats into the Earth Kingdom instead of joining the Kyoshi Warriors, and is completely off the grid, so that when she comes back to the Fire Nation and sees Azula out and about she thinks she’s gotten better and tries to reconnect with her. Shenanigans ensues.

Hi, hope you're well.
I feel like Zuko is good at math, he just hates it with a passion.
okay, as someone who has always hated math (for the sake of math, i love physics) because i grew up with a math prodigy who thinks that math is literally the only important thing ever, but was nonetheless always “good at math” in my own right (i didn’t teach myself calculus at age seven but i always got 100% on psets), i totally get that.
azula is the math sibling, and therefore zuko does not even bother attempting it. he could probably comprehend it fine if he wanted to, but the thought of trying to do something that azula can already do effortlessly is so upsetting for him. even basic arithmetic, he’s just like “i don’t do that.” katara is the same way. if math needs to happen, that is sokka’s job. after all, everyone is always praising him for how good he is at doing math. therefore it is not her problem. would zuko and katara be good at math if they did not have insufferable math prodigy siblings? who’s to say. as it is, this is them on a daily basis:

"Why can't you just let characters be evil!"
I do, though. I "let" plenty of characters just be evil by ignoring them because I find them boring as shit. The villains/antagonists I'm into are the ones whose stories touch on the terrifying and hopeful human capacity for change - both the descent into corruption and the path to redemption.
If I'm not talking about a villain in a story I like, it's because I'm "letting" them be evil just fine. There's nothing to talk about with them for me. Nothing powerful there for me. I just don't care.

yeah I’ll say it again: there was no reason for Azula to be put in an asylum for a year and still be going through it that bad all for a breakdown that took, what, less than a month? If we take Zuko’s betrayal, then Mai and Ty Lee swapping sides(? we never really see them “turning good” they just prevent Azula from hurting Zuko and the Gaang but that’s a different discussion) and then her father’s denial of her joining him to the Earth Kingdom (then feeling like she’s being treated like Zuko - thus she’s suddenly lesser in his eyes) followed by Zuko defeating her (which, in her mind, is a whole new failure and she probably feels like she failed her Nation)... yeah that’s stuff that, if given proper therapy, she could have just stayed in a hospital, and within a year, possibly even be living back in the palace with a whole new outlook on life. The writers make it sound like Zuko just wanted her out of his hair which is not how you want to write your hero whose arc is based around growth and wanting acceptance and is forgiven by a family elder after he hurts him. Yes he’s a new Fire Lord and he’s got a lot on his plate, but to just handwave his sister away after he knows the pain of being denied by his family is... bleh (also you all know how much I hate Iroh's canonical endgame)
And I know that there were talks of a fourth season in which she got her healing arc (which would have been really great to see); but it’s such a mess that the comics just kind of decided ‘nahh let the teenager who’s been locked up for a year keep her antagonist role, that’s fresh right?’ Not the girl who was put on a pedestal until suddenly everything she did was wrong (which... yeah, she WAS doing wrong; but she’s been raised to believe everything she was doing was for a greater good for HER nation and the world. She believes she’s a hero because she’s doing what she was raised to do, and to them she IS a hero. She has daddy’s ‘love’ so long as she’s perfect and amazing - and then suddenly all of that gets absolutely obliterated right in front of her one at a time as she realizes everything she’s been doing to maintain her power is also driving people away. Being 'the good kid' until suddenly you aren'twill unravel you.). Zuko knows how that feels, to feel like everything he did was wrong. He knows how it feels to have to break away from realizing he’s been hurting people; to learn from that and how he needs to change his ways.
And not only that but the way they write Azula as a villain in The Search is just AWFUL like it’s boring af. They recycle the same beats over and over and no one gets the bright idea to stop the cycle it’s AWFUL everyone in that comic is a raging idiot.
idk I could keep going in circles and we already know the comics are awful but there’s my extra 2 cents on the matter. They took a character that was already entertaining and fascinating and denied her a really great potential arc to make her one of the best allies the Gaang could have (and Zuko could have some FAMILY) but nope. Let's retread the show but instead let's make it bad.
