author's note: this is like. a few months overdue and waaayy too close to mr viper's birthday, bUT as long as it's done, it's done !! i always have fun writing jamil and this was no exception so i hope you enjoy >:DD

"Prefect, could you accompany me to practice today?" Jamil had lost count of the times he had repeated that question over the past week. A lot of times. Maybe a little too many times.

He had gotten used to asking despite the fact that the Prefect would say yes each time. It had become a routine of sorts. One in which Jamil would ask them to accompany him for their afternoon practices for the upcoming Fairy Gala. He had to admit it was something that he secretly looked forward to each time.

"Actually... I can't today." His expression must've betrayed him, because they quickly followed up with, "Sorry, senpai, I have some, uh, errands to run today."

Jamil managed to plaster an indifferent look onto his face, "No, it's fine. You have your own things to do after all." Still, he reached to pat their head before he went off to practice.

Now don't get him wrong. Jamil wasn't the type of person who would be affected by such a little thing. Especially since they had been kind enough to come to all his other practices so far. Why would them missing one practice matter?

But there was something weird in his chest even as he danced, his steps feeling heavier than usual as he went through the routine for the nth time. Maybe this was the feeling of missing someone? Even if the Prefect wasn't there, it's true that their encouragement and cheers usually boosted his mood.

The consequence of all these thoughts was that halfway through practice, Vil clicked his tongue, "Jamil. You're not focused enough today. Your dancing looks robotic if you're not putting your all into it."

"If you're not feeling up to it, then why don't you rest for today?" Kalim clapped his back, and Jamil almost wanted to shrug him off. But he knew the white-haired wasn't looking down on him and was offering genuine advice.

"Kalim's right, it'll do no good if you overwork yourself," Vil sighed, the crease between his brows deepening. "Alright, practice on your own later on, but for now, rest."

Rest.

Resting wasn't something that Jamil was particularly good at. Instead of resting, he always found himself preparing for the next day, or taking up new tasks to fill in the time. But the most pressing task right now was practicing for the Fairy Gala...and he couldn't even focus on that.

Clang. A sound from the kitchens drew Jamil's attention. He frowned. There shouldn't be anyone using the kitchens except for him. Sure, some of the dorm members cooked for themselves at times, but in the time that everyone was at their club activities? And in the dark too?

Jamil shivered slightly. Scarabia was still frozen over after all, he reminded himself. He quietly made his way to the kitchen entrance, edging around the various banisters before coming to a stop.

There was clearly someone there. Jamil just didn't know who it was. The darkness provided them a perfect cover from Jamil's sharp eyes. He clutched at his magic pen as he approached.

When he spun them around, he wasn't expecting to be bludgeoned by an oven mitt. Maybe he really should've been expecting some form of retaliation; something worse than an oven mitt.

"Wah–! Oh. Jamil-senpai..?"

He let out a soft groan, instantly recognizing the voice as the troublesome Ramshackle Prefect. "Just what are you doing here, Prefect?"

"In the kitchens?"

"No, in the dark–" Jamil sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Actually, why don't you answer to both?"

They fidgeted with their hands, "Uhm, you see...I wanted to cook something..?"

"In the Scarabia Kitchens? And in the dark?"

"Ye..s...?"

He folded his arms and they instantly looked at the ground guiltily, "Tell me what's really going on."

"Look, it was supposed to be a surprise," They sighed, finally lowering the oven mitt in hand.

"What was supposed to be a surprise?" As soon as Jamil posed the question, he heard the soft "ding" of the kitchen timer go off.

"That," They pointed over at the only oven that was on in the darkened kitchen. He watched as they pulled out a tray of what looked like cookies out of the oven.

"These ones are still hot so take one from that jar over there," They called out. Jamil spotted the jar easily; almost filled to the brim with cookies.

He grabbed one from the top, giving it a cursory sniff, "Are these kleicha tamur?"

"Yeah," He could hear the nervousness creep into their voice as he stared down the dessert in his palm. "I was, uhm, researching and it seemed to be a popular dessert in parts of Scalding Sands...?"

"Why is that a question?" Jamil shook his head. The kleicha looked...great, actually. There was a golden sheen on the top, and he could detect a hint of sweetness from the date swirl in the dough.

There was a pause before they spoke, "I was afraid you won't like them."

"Oh. Well, first of all," Jamil lifted a piece from the jar. "I don't like dates."

A look of sheer horror crossed their face, "Oh Sevens, I forgot–"

"I'm not finished," Jamil held up a hand. "The only way I like dates is mixed into other cooking, so...this is fine."

"...Really?"

"Yes, really," Jamil huffed. "What, do I need to eat one in front of you to convince you?"

"No, no!" They started shaking their hands— which were still adorably clad in oven mitts. But Jamil had already popped a morsel of kleicha into his mouth, chewing purposefully.

"It tastes good," Jamil said simply. "There's a little too much date paste, and the dough's a little lumpy, but...not bad for your first try."

"That's great!" He watched as a proud smile bloomed on the Prefect's face. "They were supposed to be a surprise for after the runway performance, but I guess you can have them now."

Jamil pressed his lips together before delivering a hasty confession, "Listen, I...didn't really need you to come to all those practices. It was a selfish request of mine."

"I know," There was a slight curve of their lips. "I'm smart enough to know that, at least."

"Ah, really."

His deadpan didn't escape them, earning him a glare, "C'mon, you weren't exactly being subtle. But," The glare softened just a bit. "I did enjoy it."

Jamil tried to keep a straight face as he asked, "What exactly did you enjoy, Prefect?"

Their gaze was unflinching as they answered, "Watching you put in effort into something that you really enjoy, Jamil Viper." Unease crept down his spine. Did he really look like he was enjoying dancing that much?

His reply was almost automatic, "I was only doing it becau–"

They raised a hand, "You don't need to make excuses in front of me, Jamil-senpai. You should just...like what you like."

Jamil pressed his lips together. They were right. Of course they were. He didn't need to say those petty excuses that had burned themselves inside of his mind. Not anymore. Not when he resolved to change the way he saw things, if only little by little.

"Ahem, anyway," The Prefect looked oddly nervous as they spoke again. "I know that Vil-senpai's been rough on you. But you've been doing really well and... I'm rooting for you, so...good luck!"

They leaned forward; and he felt the slightest brush of hesitant lips against his cheek. Jamil felt his heart stop in his chest. He blinked, having to consciously tell himself to breathe because—

Did they just...kiss him on the cheek...?

"I've...got to go now," They rushed out, turning off he oven. "Oh, uh, feel free to share the cookies with Kalim-senpai...? See you tomorrow!"

Jamil didn't even get a word in before they were rushing out the door like a whirlwind. And he certainly felt like a whirlwind had swept through, collapsing onto the ground with disbelief still written all over his face. He tried to ignore the heat on his face, secretly grateful for Scarabia's current colder temperature for helping him with his...predicament.

"'Like what you like', huh?" He murmured to himself, cradling the jar between his palms. Then was that permission for Jamil to entrust them with a portion of his heart? Because at this rate, it was more than obvious that he harbored a certain type of fondness towards them. One that certainly wouldn't be fading anytime soon.

"How amusing. You really think I'm going to share these with Kalim?" Jamil finally let a smile spread on his lips. "Never in a million years, Prefect."

(The jar was carefully stashed behind Jamil's study lamp and his books, away from anyone that might accidentally see it. And as to whether Jamil got any rest... He ended up practicing well into the night on his own accord. He wouldn't want to deliver a sloppy performance, right? Especially after his biggest supporter had given him the sweetest incentive.)

Kalim: And that’s our music rehearsal for today! As expected of Scarabia’s students, we were all in harmony! Thank you for your hard work.

Scarabia Student A: Thank you for your hard work.

Scarabia: Student A: Thanks!

Floyd: See you~

Kalim: See you later everyone... Floyd! How long have you been here?

Floyd: About 30 minutes.

Kalim: I didn’t notice you at all... Were you watching the entire time while we were practicing our music instruments?

Floyd: Yeah. I was walking through the hallway when I heard music, so I became interested in who was playing it. It was a rhythm that I’ve never heard before, what’s up with that?

Kalim: It’s a tune we play when there’s a joyous situation back in my hometown Scalding Sands. Now that you say it, it might sound strange to foreigners. The rhythm of the main drum is quite interesting, right?

Floyd: It was... Weird! The melody of the flute and the guitar were weird, but the drum is definitely the thing I’ve never heard before. I can still hear it.

Kalim: Hahaha. I’m glad it left an impression. We’ll do our best to have this same atmosphere in three days, at the main event. I’ve heard that the new magician’s school in my country can do it as well. They entrusted the current principal to guide the founding magicians of that one.

Floyd: So, magicians from another place come here? Why’s that?

Kalim: It might be to observe... They might want to spread the way of teaching at Night Raven College all over the world. Our college is famous, after all. Well, you can ask Jamil about the details. In any case, some guys from my hometown will visit soon. I think that holding a welcome banquet with music from my hometown will be super exciting for them!

Floyd: With a banquet, you mean a party, right? You’re not going for the standard piano and quiet songs?

Kalim: What’re you saying? It needs to have good food, a nice beat and flashy dances. I want to make it as lively as possible.

Floyd: Huh~ you know that sounds kinda fun~ That’s totally different from the ones I’ve experienced. The parties I know have people standing around, eating a little and exchanging greetings afterwards.

Kalim: I see. That sounds like a stuffy but classy party.

Floyd: Jade tells me to endure it, but everyone is as boring and quiet as a deep-sea fish. I think having a noisy party like yours, sea-otter, would be way more fun.

Kalim: Sea otter...you mean me? In any case, then you should come and see our party as well. Not only the guests but also the entertainers really enjoy themselves!

Floyd: Will you perform as well?

Kalim: Yeah, I plan to play the string instrument called the Oud. I’m also in the light music club and ever since I was young I’ve been good at playing instruments. Do you play anything, Floyd?

Floyd: I played some drums in middle school. Azul played the piano, and Jade was in charge of the bass. We played as a trio. Azul frequently told me to “Please follow the beat and don’t go crazy” and got angry.

Kalim: Haha, I can imagine.

Floyd: He was so mean. Jade said it was just an intense self-assertion. While we were struggling to find the tempo, Azul grumbled and matched our paces... It was fun.

Kalim: If you like music that much, you should enter the light music club! We can play together.

Floyd: I’m fine.

Kalim: But you like musical performances, right? It’d be a waste to quit.

Floyd: I don’t like being told by a human what to do... And right now, moving my body is the most fun. Lately I’ve been interested in dancing! Now that I have two tail fins, it’s been so entertaining. Sometimes I can’t even tell the difference between left and right.

Kalim: Tail fins? Left and right... ah, do you mean your legs?

Floyd: Yes, legs! Moving your legs is fun, so dancing is fun as well. I love fun things. I don’t want to do boring things. Applies to everything.

Kalim: I also love fun things! They’re the best! That’s why even if I love music, I also love dancing... You know, our hobbies are kind of the same, huh?

Floyd: Huh...you think so?

Kalim: Yeah, do you want to try performing together next time?

Floyd: Aha. With me? Okay, but I think you’ll be surprised at how good I am.

Kalim: That’s fine, I’ve heard a lot about you. You should definitely show me how you dance.

Floyd: If I feel like it.

Chapter 2

Exterior Hallway 2F

Floyd: That class is finally over~ Today was such a noisy day, huh?

Jade: It seems that way because there were some associates of the Department of Education of the Scalding Sands present. They have come to observe Night Raven College.

Floyd: Ah, yeah, the sea otter told me all about it.

Kalim: Ah, here you are! Floyd, do you have a moment!?

Floyd: Huh, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to hold a party for the great observers?

Kalim: That’s where I have a problem. The guy who plays the main drum has gotten a cold and can’t participate today. We’ve tried to rehearse without the drum but the song doesn’t feel authentic without the percussion... And that’s when I remembered you.

Floyd: Me?

Kalim: You said you had experience with the drum. Don’t you want to show off your technique to everyone? I’m sure performing together will be fun. Come on Floyd, let’s liven up the party together!

Floyd: Huh? Don’t wanna.

Kalim: ...Huh. What do you mean you don’t wanna?

Jade: Pf. Floyd, it wouldn’t hurt you to be more polite in your refusals.

Floyd: I don’t wanna do things I don’t like.

Kalim: But didn’t you tell me it was fine when I offered you earlier to perform together?

Floyd: I told you I didn’t like being ordered around by humans, didn’t I? And you know, I don’t feel like matching with y’all.

Kalim: You don’t have to force yourself to match the other guys. If you do things like you do, that’s fine as well.

Floyd: ... For real?

Kalim: Of course! As I said before, having fun at a party is essential! The guests and the entertainers should both have fun.

Floyd: Okay, then I’ll do it.

Kalim: Really?!

Floyd: Yeah. As long as I can do whatever I want.

Kalim: You really saved me, thank you, Floyd!

Jade: ... I’m looking forwards to Floyd’s performance, hehehe. I should let Azul know as well.

Scarabia Dorm - Lounge

Kalim: Welcome to Night Raven College, everyone from the Scalding Sands. I am the dorm leader of Scarabia, Kalim Al-Asim. As a testimony to our welcome, we prepared music as a gift. These are tunes from everyone’s hometowns, so please have fun! Scarabia, and Floyd, are you guys ready?

Students: Yes!

Floyd: Yep.

Kalim: Then let’s go. Let’s have fun!

Jamil: W-What is the meaning of this...

Azul: Jamil, you’re late.

Jamil: Azul, why are you in our lounge? And furthermore, why is Floyd performing?

Azul: Kalim asked him to be a substitute. I came to watch as the dorm leader.

Jamil: I told him to cancel the concert! And while I was arranging the food that Kalim...!

Azul: Oh well, why don’t we enjoy the performance? Floyd’s drumming is quite good as well.

Jamil: W-Well it’s true that he’s better than you’d expect from a pinch hitter...

Floyd: ... Eergh! Just hitting stuff is boring.

Kalim: U-uh, Floyd, why did you suddenly throw your sticks away!

Floyd: You were the one who told me I could do what I wanted. I feel more like dancing than playing drums.

Kalim: It’s true that I said that, but... Why did you abandon your instrument?!

Floyd: You’re supposed to have fun at a party, right? Everyone should stand up and do whatever they want~

Kalim: ... Haha, ahaha! Man, this became super lively and fun. Floyd’s really dancing without worries. Okay. A party shouldn’t be like this. Come on everyone, sing and dance! Don’t hold back on enjoying this bustling party.

Floyd: Oh, you guys finally stood up. How about I’ll strangle you if you don’t get excited?

Jamil: What a terrible fuss. Certainly, a party should be enjoyed... But there’s a limit to everything.

Azul: Floyd’s drumming was popular in his home town. It had a rhythm that made you move your body just by listening to it. Well, the guy himself broke out in dancing all the time... It was always troublesome.

Jamil: If this isn’t a chaotic situation. Aah, how will I explain this to the principal...

Azul: Do not worry, I shall help you. That’s why I came.

Jamil: Why do I have the feeling it won’t be free of charge. My head hurts... I also feel like dancing and forgetting everything.

Kalim: Isn’t this fun, Floyd!

1. More Instagram Stories, fewer posts

Instagram Stories have taken over, with more than 500 million viewers every day.

They have also become the place where people keep tabs on their friends and family, according to Instagram research.

On the other hand, the Instagram feed is primarily associated with polished content and discovery.

Getting rid of the chronological feed has only reinforced that perception. Posts now need to be slightly more evergreen. Stories seem more real-time by contrast.

The majority of users see the Instagram feed as a place to find information and discover products and brands.

While that’s good news for brands, regular users find it more difficult to imagine their content in the mix. Some have viewed Instagram’s decision to test hiding likes as an attempt to spur more sharing from those who feel intimidated by the feed.

2. Growth of the Explore tab

More than 200 million Instagrammers check the Explore grid every day and that number is expected to rise this year.

The feed’s new navigation bar now offers shortcuts to IGTV and Shop. From there, people can delve into their niche interests, like beauty, travel, food, or art.

Or, they can get lost in a selection of Stories that will now be algorithmically fed into the Explore feed.

3. Sound on for Instagram Stories

It’s still important to design for sound off environments. But a recent Facebook (and Instagram) study found that viewers like voiceover and music. 80% of Stories with voiceover or music performed better than ads without.

Currently 60% of Instagram Stories are viewed with sound on.

Maybe TikTok’s musical platform has helped turn up the volume across social media channels. Either way, expect TikTok to influence more Instagram trends to come.

4. Strategic stickers in Instagram Stories

Stickers are popular on Instagram Stories, but businesses have had mixed results with them. That’s going to change this year, though.

Expect to see fewer unnecessary and generic stickers, and more polished and original branded stickers over 2019.

5. More interactive Instagram Stories

While stickers have been a mixed bag for businesses, interactive stickers have been a hit.

Questions, poll, countdown, and emoji-slider stickers don’t just prompt more engagement, they make Instagram Stories more sticky. In other words, people stick around longer if there’s something for them to interact with.

For instance, Instagram internal data shows that nine times out of 10, the polling sticker increases video views.

Look for Instagram to unveil for interactive elements over the coming year.

6. Easier ways to shop on Instagram

With more than 70% of shopping enthusiasts using Instagram to explore brands, Instagram now rivals Pinterest as a platform for product discovery.

Over the past year Instagram introduced product tags in feed posts, product stickers in Stories, and a shopping feed via the Explore tab.

With more than 130 million taps on these tags each month, a direct buying option is the logical next step. In March 2019, Instagram rolled out a beta in-app Checkout feature that it’s testing with 20 brands, including Adidas, Burberry, Nike, and Revolve.

Instagram charges merchants a selling fee to use Checkout. But, if it spikes enough sales, the fee won’t stop more brands and influencers from getting in on the action.

7. Shoppable influencers

Instagram influencers face a barrage of comments and DMs that often ask the same question: Where’d you get that?

To save influencers’ time, Instagram now lets creators tag products in their posts, which can be purchased directly with Instagram Checkout.

Only a select few currently have access to the feature, including Chiara Ferragni, Kylie Jenner, and Vogue.

Right now, they can only tag businesses participating in the beta Checkout program. But more will be available soon.

8. More realness and representation

Authenticity is so last year. 2019 is all about #nofilter.

Celebrity influencers like Jameela Jamil have waged a war on airbrushing, photoshopping, filtering, body shaming, and non-inclusive creative.

Expect to see stretch marks, zits, and more from brands, especially in Instagram Stories. And with it expect to see more real talk about mental health, body insecurities, and other important issues.

9. Rise of relatable influencers

Users are looking for authenticity from their influencers, too. The unrealistic lifestyles and picture-perfect aesthetics of certain Instagram influencers has given rise to Instagram vs. Reality memes. Out of that has come a new breed of influencer: the relatable influencer.

For example, mommy blogger Laura Izumikawa shares the ups and the downs of parenting. Joana Ceddia channels her awkwardness into humour. Jen Gotch talks anxiety and bipolar disorder. These influencers attract followers who are going through similar experiences.

As Izumikawa shares, “People are on social media to connect—or at the very least—relate to others. Being open and transparent will go a long way to help you connect with your audience.”

This is feels like my new normal. Swollen eyes, constant flow of tears and long, beautiful hair. It’s stress, and insecurity and sadness. it’s emotions – some of which I haven’t felt in a long time. And it’s not that my meds don’t work or that I’m having a depressive episode, and part of me wishes it was, because I know exactly what to do when that type of situation arises. Strangely they come with less pain than this. Less tears. Less rumination and obsessive thinking because the sensation is closer to no emotion than all emotion. Add in a little shame, because I thought I was stronger than this. And also I realized that I am not immune to vulnerability and vulnerability has kind of become my brand. And it feels scary to share and it feels oftentimes meaningless to share, because it is really personal and I don’t have a solution and I usually like to offer solutions along with problems. And I’m in this fucked place because I asked to be and I should be grateful. I’m here alone, in solitary confinement – a form of psychological torture, writing this book that I really want a lot of people to read, because although it is a memoir, the goal is not just to share funny stories from my past. The goal is to enlighten people about their own mental health, to deglamorize success, build emotional intelligence, help as many people as possible feel less alone and yes of course, make everyone laugh. And I feel that instagram was a big part of what brought me this opportunity so I feel accountable to the platform and more specifically to you. So yeah, no solution here. Just an update, because the lack of an update was making me feel worse than an actual update. I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I believe there is a light at the end of every tunnel. I just am not deep enough until the tunnel to see it and I want to go back, or lay down & cry or watch the entire first season of the Walking Dead while drunk. But I won’t because I know moving forward is the only way through. Don’t feel bad for me, I am just identifying what is happening and acknowledging that I hate it more than going to the dentist naked – which I never have done, but it sounds awful.

10. The influence of TikTok

The unstoppable growth of TikTok, a music-backed video-sharing app that’s popular with teens, may inspire copycat behaviour from Instagram—as we saw with Snapchat.

IGTV will probably see the most changes, since many think the channel is due for a revamp.

And there are already early signs. Instagram’s recent overhaul of the IGTV feed resembles a cross between TikTok and Snapchat’s Discover feeds. Horizontal scrolling has been replaced with vertical scrolling. And, an algorithm automatically queues up the next video for you to view.

TikTok’s popular challenges have already organically migrated into Instagram follower feeds. So it wouldn’t be surprising to see Instagram attempt to foster more of that, especially since these challenges inspire content creation.

11. More channel-to-channel sharing

With posts in Stories and IGTV videos in the feed, Instagram has been toying with increased linkage between its different formats. Expect to see more crossover from brands who are attempting to boost views in different streams.

For example, when Instagram changed its feed algorithm, we saw more people sharing “new post” alerts in their Stories. Also, one-minute IGTV teasers have been popping up in the feed to direct viewers to the main channel.

Stories are no longer contained to the top of the app either. Now, they’ll show up in the Explore grid too.

The grid will offer personalized Stories recommendations, reminiscent of TikTok.

Instagram is reportedly testing adding direct links for Instagram Stories, too.

12. Sharing Twitter takes on Instagram

Hot takes have taken over Twitter, and they’re showing up on Instagram more and more.

It’s true, @fuckjerry’s been stealing (ahem, now crediting) Tweet memes for years. But, accounts like @will_ent show that this Instagram trend is not letting up.

As The Verge author Megan Farokhmanesh notes, “For some meme creators, Twitter and Tumblr are a canvas, while Instagram is the wall where they display their work.”

Look for Tweets appearing in more Instagram-friendly templates, from branded backgrounds to cleaner, cropped screenshots.

Expect also to see more text-a-gramming, too, ranging from Rupi Kaur-esque poems to more type-moding in Instagram Stories.

13. Increased social activism

With heightened activism spurred by social unrest and the upcoming elections in Canada and the United States, people are sharing their opinions on social media more than ever.

Text-friendly platforms like Facebook and Twitter have traditionally been associated with social activism. But Instagrammers now have a stronger-than-ever grasp of how to use the platform to share and amplify their views.

From “I voted” stickers to climate change memes, it’s become increasingly common and sometimes inescapable for people and brands to take a stand on the platform.

Activism on all fronts often involves calls for donations to nonprofits.

In February, Instagram introduced a donation sticker that can be added to Stories. While the feature is not yet available to everyone, people will be able to select a nonprofit and even customize the name of their fundraiser.

14. Crackdown on Instagram bots

Facebook and Twitter have been under the microscope for their role in influencing elections and harbouring hate speech. And more recent reports are uncovering the role Instagram has played, too.

Over the coming year, we’ll likely see Instagram take steps to combat abuse on its platform. We’ve already seen a few, including increased access to verification and the addition of “About this Account” to profiles with large followings.

Bans on Facebook may start to apply to Instagram, too. For example, far-right figures Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson, and Laura Loomer were removed from both sites this month.

But before there were any headlines about Russian meddling, Instagram already had a bot problem. Fake engagement bots have long been the scourge of the app, and Facebook has already started the year off by slamming bot sellers with lawsuits.

More purges, enhanced security, and increased scrutiny will likely follow in 2019.

15. Changes to Instagram Direct

Rumours that Instagram would completely push direct messaging to its standalone Direct app can finally be put to rest, at least for now.

With Direct gone, it’s likely that Instagram users will see some changes or improvements to the in-app messaging feature instead.

GIFs were introduced last year, and the Quick Replies tool was added to help businesses quickly answer frequently asked questions. It’s possible that Instagram will offer more filtering options for business and regular accounts.

For example, the option to make a Close Friends list for Instagram Stories makes it easier to direct message a group of friends at once. There are also rumours that Instagram will make direct messaging available on desktop.
