The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories

With this being such a diverse set of stories covering science fiction in a million different ways, it was bound to be a bit of a mixed bag, but, after finishing this, I came away with some new favorites and a newfound appreciation for the art of translation. To highlight a few standouts, “A Brief History of Beinakan Disasters as Told in Sinitic Language”, “Dragonslaying”, “New Year Painting, Ink and Color on Rice Paper, Zhaoqiao”, and “The Woman Carrying a Corpse” were by far my favorite stories of the collection. I also really enjoyed the five essays throughout and felt I had learned something new from each one. I loved having this opportunity to read more sci-fi from Chinese authors and even though I couldn’t necessarily “relate” (though I loathe the use of that term in this context) I felt like reading this had been a treat in its own right.

Favorite Quote: Most prefer to ignore the truth. The elites create a context. The masses accept it.

If you don't mind me asking, how do Xiaoyan and Jin Chan meet? What are their first impressions of each other like?

(Highkey, the part where he's being chased by her sect brothers for being just a liiiiittle too friendly with her is *sending me*)

Jin Chan and Xiao Yan met when he was seven and she was around six, which was when Jin Chan made his first visit to Lotus Pier as part of Jin Guangyao's disciple entourage. Jin Chan was bullying Jin Ling when Xiao Yan wandered across them, and immediately stopped because a) Xiao Yan was the prettiest girl he'd ever seen and b) she'd just kicked his knees out from under him for "bullying Ling-shige."

Jin Chan developed an instant crush, and Xiao Yan forgot he existed about 0.5 seconds later because Li Shuai was trying to chase her down and make her take a bath.

They didn't actually talk again until the discussion conference in TMAAF ten years later, at which point Jin Chan tried to reintroduce himself to her like so:

Jin Chan: H-hello, do you remember me?

Xiao Yan: ? no, who are you? :D

Jin Chan, who hadn't counted on her forgetting him: Um, you...you once beat me up for bullying Jin Ling...

Xiao Yan, flattered by Jin Chan's obvious crush but also confused: Yes, but when? I've beat up lots of Jin boys before, so I'll need help to figure out which one you were. ;)

Jin Chan: :'( oh, it doesn't matter--

Xiao Yan: But there's a perfectly good training field right outside, so if you like, I can just beat you up again. I'll be sure to remember you after that. ;))))

I’ve recently tumbled down the bilibili hole of cdrama edits and some of them do an amazing job hyping up upcoming dramas! So here are a few I’m personally super excited for.

Till The End of the Moon (长月烬明)

Cast:

Luo Yunxi (罗云熙) as Tantai Jin (澹台烬)/Cang Jiumin (沧九旻)/Ming Ye (冥夜) - The demon god who has never cried since he was born. Even if his eyes were gouged out and his tendons were torn off, no one saw his fragile state.

Bai Lu (白鹿) as Li Susu (黎苏苏)/Ye Xiwu (叶夕雾)/Sang Jiu (桑酒) - The adopted daughter of the head of the Immortal Sect. Love You Seven Times (七时吉祥)

Cast:

Yang Chaoyue (杨超越) as Xiang Yun (祥云) - She was originally a cloud, but was later turned into a fairy by Yue Lao. She works in Yue Lao Pavilion and develops a seven-life love with Chu Kong because of a misunderstanding.

Ding Yuxi (丁禹兮) as Chu Kong (初空) - He is a disciple of the King of the Stars of the Sun. When he accidentally enters the Yuelao Pavilion he is seen as a villain. Chu Kong accidentally broke Xiang Yun's fan, causing the two to quarrel and accidentally mess up the red rope, causing chaos in the marriage of the Three Realms. The Jade Emperor learns of this, and punished the two of them to go through seven worlds of love calamities before they could return to the heaven, and the story began from there.

Fun Fact: the writer of the novel this drama is based on also wrote The Legends (招摇) and The Blue Whisper (与君初相识). The original novel has a 7.5 rating on douban.

Liu Xueyi (刘学义) as Jin Xia (锦绣) - The god of the sky, the leader of the flower world, the highest boss of Hong Ning. He was trained as a successor to the heavenly realm since he was a child. He is a responsible and mission-driven veteran cadre who is extremely disciplined. Cold and arrogant on the outside, sullen on the inside, straight in the mouth, always fragrant, often provoked by Hong Ning and shy, it will turn back to the prototype of golden peony. The Blood of Youth x Pokémon Ideas

Sikong Qianluo: unintentionally leans towards using bug types and flying types, but really just cares about how stabby they are. Beedrill, Escavalier, and Fearow could all suit her style. Moltres could represent her role as the Vermillion Bird.

Tang Lian: poison type specialist. Despite this, his ace is a Meowscarada who also uses a flower trick to take down foes. Ariados can lay traps with webs and Nidorino uses its needles to poison opponents. He has an Accelgor from when he helped Qianluo evolve her Escavalier. Torterra, Terrapagos, or Drednaw could represent his role as the Black Tortoise.

Jin Xian (Jade Deity): experienced with fighting, steel, and ice type Pokémon. Cobalion and Gallade suit him well aesthetically, conceptually, and personality-wise. Articuno could go well with his Blizzard Sword. He could probably have a Lucario, too. (Was thinking about Alolan Ninetales at one point, but that may be more suitable for Li Hanyi. Honestly, Jin Xian and Li Hanyi do have quite a few similarities, especially with them both connected to Kunlun Mountain.)

Jin Yan: ghost and dark specialist. Sableye and Gengar bring the chaos and the fun. Tyranitar could be nice for him, but it might be too heavy of a hitter for him to handle. Other possibilities include Liepard (which would be a great match aesthetically) and maybe Grimmsnarl.

Jin Xuan: probably favors psychic types, but has no obvious specialization. He uses a formidable Gardevoir and Dusknoir to protect the Emperor. His secret ace is the legendary ice dragon Kyurem, cold and empty as the Art of Detachment he practices. All his Pokémon would probably be shiny.

Jin Yu: favors bug types and normal types, but doesn’t appear to be interested in battling. He has a connection with butterflies in the novel that’s subtly referenced in the show and his palm technique is warm, so Volcarona could be a good ace for him. An Icy Snow Pattern Vivillon as a gift from Jin Xian could be a sweet way to represent their friendship. Indeedee could be a great match for him in terms of abilities and temperament. I also like the idea of him having an Absol that was abused/neglected by his late master, because Zhuo Qing doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would treat his Pokémon well, and the foreshadowing nature of Absol would almost be poetic.

Jin Wei: specializes in ghost and steel types. His sword is a bit more exciting in other mediums and is very ghostly, so Aegislash would be an amazing fit. He could also have an Alolan Marowak that he raised since it was a Cubone, and possibly a Spiritomb. As more of a ceremonial sword, Zacian could be under Jin Wei’s watch.

Lei Wujie: fire type specialist. Personality-wise, Growlithe would be a great fit and he could probably start out on his journey with it. Darmanitan could suit him well, since it also fights with fire and fists. Mega Charizard X could represent the Azure Dragon role that he has. Feucoco is no thoughts, head empty, cute and on fire.

Li Hanyi: ice specialist. Has a terrifyingly strong Chien-Pao, as well as a Glaceon and Alolan Ninetails who help keep out unwanted guests to their mountain.
