铁马冰河 Armoured Horse Icy River; SVSSS' Luo Binghe's Name and Blood of Youth's Li Hanyi's sword. (Storm on the Eleven Month Fourth Day 十一月四日风雨大作 by Lu You 陆游)
When I first watched 少年歌行 Blood of Youth, I was thought Li Hanyi’s sword 铁马冰河 Armoured Horse Icy River sounded awfully familiar.  It took me half the series to realise that I was also looking at SVSSS’ 洛冰河 Luo Binghe’s name quite literally LOL.  In fact Icy River = Binghe.  IT WAS RIGHT THERE. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Tumblr media
The “Storm on the Eleven Month Fourth Day 十一月四日风雨大作” was written by the poet Lu You 陆游 in 1192. He was living in the countryside of his hometown, Shanyin, after his dismissal from the government in the 16th year of the Southern Song Dynasty (1189 AD). The poet was 68 years old at that time, but his strong desire to improve the country was impossible for him to come to fruition in reality, so on a "stormy" night, his feelings arose, and he realised his wish of galloping to the Central Plains in his dream.  Throughout his life, Lu You wrote 11000 poems but he’s known for his various patriotic poetries, and this was one of his more famous pieces.
风卷江湖雨暗村,四山声作海涛翻。
The wind has swept across the Jianghu.  Rain has fallen on the the village, seemingly dimming it.   There is the sound of wind and rain from all four sides of the mountain, like the waves rolling over the sea.
溪柴火软蛮毡暖,我与狸奴不出门。
The bundles of firewood from Ruye Stream and the felt wraps around me to keep me warm.  I stay at home with my cat. 蛮毡 This was a type of felt that was produced in the Southwest China and some areas in the South.
僵卧孤村不自哀,尚思为国戍轮台。
Living in a poor and lonely village; I’m not sad over the state I’m in.  In my heart, I have still have thoughts about guarding the frontiers for my country.
戍轮台 This was a common defensive structure in Xinjiang during the ancient times.
夜阑卧听风吹雨,铁马冰河入梦来。
Night is coming to an end as  I lay in bed and listen to the storm outside.  I dreamt that I was riding an armoured warhorse across a frozen river to the northern frontier.
风吹雨 This is literally translated as “listening to the wind blowing the rain” but I’ve summed it up as the storm in my translation.  This is an allusion to turmoil within the Song Dynasty’s court, which was why the poet couldn’t sleep at night.
Analysis
I think 铁马冰河 Armoured Horse Icy River’s sends a pretty obvious image; it’s that of someone charging into war.  In the case of Blood of Youth, this sword was supposed to be one of the most powerful in the Jianghu.  So it is indeed a very pretty name.
In the case of SVSSS, it’s also a fitting name for a protagonist of a stallion novel.  I’m guessing MXTX wanted a name that sounded like the lead character of an action novel lol.  His surname 洛 Luo does sound like the River Luo, or it could a possible wordplay on the word 落. Luo (ie. His name would be “Fallen into the Icy River” which was where hew as found). However, I felt that it could also be a reference to the river goddess 洛神 Luo Shen who was known for her beauty and her love story.  I’ve previously analysed a famous poem that describes her.  Perhaps MXTX wanted a “softer” surname to balance out his name XD

Ah, the tragedy of it all! They met in their youth, but circumstances and a prophecy prevented them getting together. Now he finally left the mountain for her, only to heal her at the cost of his own life. And at the eve of their marriage, no less. Bwaaah! 😭😭😭

Blood of Youth managed sell me on Li Hanyi/ Zhao Yuzhen in like two minutes, Lei Wujie’s crush on the girl whose name I don’t remember yet is cute, and I totally believe Qianluo is into Xiao Se. I don’t like it, teenage girl tsunderes give me headaches and Xiao Se has more interest in Wuxin, but I believe it from Qianluo’s side.
They’ve accomplished more competent romance in 16 episodes than Immortal Samsara did in 59~
Anyways, I recommend you don’t watch these two shows near each other, gentle readers. The comparison is not flattering. This campy wuxia apple is giving me better orange vibes than the actual orange.

Oh no! We have to infiltrate a sect/brothel/imperial palace/imperial academy but women/men aren't allowed! What can we do???
WELL
If there is one thing that Cdrama has taught us, it's that changing your clothes and hair makes you unrecognisable even if you don't change your make-up. If you're more worried, then perhaps you can add a fake moustache (it never fails!)
*I'm actually a little unclear if the actress is meant to be portraying a man at this point, but she doesn't remove her make up so I'm counting it
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!

Blood of Youth 少年歌行 tv drama thoughts (mostly focused on shipping lol 😂):
It should be illegal for a monk to be this pretty and this shippable. The cradle-Buddhist in me feels so guilty every time I ship him with Xiao Se. but there is also the deep appeal of breaking taboos 唉,罪过,罪过啊 🙈
Sikong Qianluo is very, very miscast. I ship the concept of her with Xiao Se (bodyguard/prince couple) but not this particular actress’ face.
Xiao Se is shippable with everyone, but the onscreen chemistry with Ye Ruoyi’s actress in the last few episodes is insane. She should have been cast as Sikong Qianluo.
That being said, that episode where Ye Ruoyi shows up with her army to support Sikong Qianluo suddenly opened my eyes to yet another wonderful potential pairing
But my actual crack ship for this drama is Li Hanyi x Yi Luoxia (the number one swordswoman and the number one beauty? SIGN ME UP 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩)
Everyone in this show so shippable with everyone else ahhhhh
I love the anime aesthetics of this show
This is very much a 群像 ensemble drama and the supporting cast are really the highlight of the show for me. Xiao Se didn’t initially draw me in as a main character but he grew on me as we got more into his character arc
This is the 热血爽剧 uplifting shounen anime vibe I needed after the somber tone and torturously ambiguous ending of Mysterious Lotus Casebook 被莲花楼虐了一番还意难平😭

The Blood of Youth x Pokémon Ideas
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sikong Qianluo: unintentionally leans towards using bug types and flying types, but really just cares about how stabby they are. Beedrill, Escavalier, and Fearow could all suit her style. Moltres could represent her role as the Vermillion Bird.
Tang Lian: poison type specialist. Despite this, his ace is a Meowscarada who also uses a flower trick to take down foes. Ariados can lay traps with webs and Nidorino uses its needles to poison opponents. He has an Accelgor from when he helped Qianluo evolve her Escavalier. Torterra, Terrapagos, or Drednaw could represent his role as the Black Tortoise.
Jin Xian (Jade Deity): experienced with fighting, steel, and ice type Pokémon. Cobalion and Gallade suit him well aesthetically, conceptually, and personality-wise. Articuno could go well with his Blizzard Sword. He could probably have a Lucario, too. (Was thinking about Alolan Ninetales at one point, but that may be more suitable for Li Hanyi. Honestly, Jin Xian and Li Hanyi do have quite a few similarities, especially with them both connected to Kunlun Mountain.)
Jin Yan: ghost and dark specialist. Sableye and Gengar bring the chaos and the fun. Tyranitar could be nice for him, but it might be too heavy of a hitter for him to handle. Other possibilities include Liepard (which would be a great match aesthetically) and maybe Grimmsnarl.
Jin Xuan: probably favors psychic types, but has no obvious specialization. He uses a formidable Gardevoir and Dusknoir to protect the Emperor. His secret ace is the legendary ice dragon Kyurem, cold and empty as the Art of Detachment he practices. All his Pokémon would probably be shiny.
Jin Yu: favors bug types and normal types, but doesn’t appear to be interested in battling. He has a connection with butterflies in the novel that’s subtly referenced in the show and his palm technique is warm, so Volcarona could be a good ace for him. An Icy Snow Pattern Vivillon as a gift from Jin Xian could be a sweet way to represent their friendship. Indeedee could be a great match for him in terms of abilities and temperament. I also like the idea of him having an Absol that was abused/neglected by his late master, because Zhuo Qing doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would treat his Pokémon well, and the foreshadowing nature of Absol would almost be poetic.
Jin Wei: specializes in ghost and steel types. His sword is a bit more exciting in other mediums and is very ghostly, so Aegislash would be an amazing fit. He could also have an Alolan Marowak that he raised since it was a Cubone, and possibly a Spiritomb. As more of a ceremonial sword, Zacian could be under Jin Wei’s watch.
Lei Wujie: fire type specialist. Personality-wise, Growlithe would be a great fit and he could probably start out on his journey with it. Darmanitan could suit him well, since it also fights with fire and fists. Mega Charizard X could represent the Azure Dragon role that he has. Feucoco is no thoughts, head empty, cute and on fire.
Li Hanyi: ice specialist. Has a terrifyingly strong Chien-Pao, as well as a Glaceon and Alolan Ninetails who help keep out unwanted guests to their mountain.

Supporting characters that I loved in The blood of youth
Loved the leads so much and they were perfect and this post is to dedicate my love to the side characters whom I think are very lovely
the top of the list is sikong changfeng who radiates dad energy... The very level headed head of the city and a loving father to her daughter and her friends and the problem solver of his squad... the most lovable and yet very reliable character for the squad.. Love his energy throughout the show except the part where he asked wuxin to go back to tianwaitian but i get it.... still mad at it though
the second spot for my loved characters is huajin... a medical prodigy who healed everyone without bias.... She is just there for her job without greed and such... I love her... she is an icon!
the third person is mu chunfeng... The rich kid who wants to study medicine.. He is smart and fun to watch on screen... He knows his power and how to use it and i like it when the characters are smart and his smart has a reasonable root!
honorable mention is the love story of li hanyi and zhoyuzhen... A love that heaven didnt approve... I would love to see it as a xianxia!!!

"Coldness at Year’s End 凛凛岁云暮 written anonymously in the Han Dynasty" Li Hanyi 李寒衣's namesake poem (Blood of Youth)
This is the Li Hanyi’s namesake poem.  Zhao Yuzhen, her lover, saves her in battle and remarks that “this is a very inauspicious name,” and wants to change her name to “Blossom”.  To understand what he means, we have to look at what the poem means.
(CQL fans might find Zhao Yuzhen really familiar. 😂. I wonder why haha)
Before anyone jumps at me, I did take this screen recording off an unofficial source. I watched Blood of Youth off the paid Chinese Youku site so it doesn’t have subs. However, I don’t know who subbed this, or if this is even Youku’s official subs on the international site. 😂 I’ll probably be using snippets from the same source because I don’t want to pay for a second subscription to get official English subs that I personally do not need. 🤣
“Coldness at the Year’s End 凛凛岁云暮” was written anonymously in the Han Dynasty.   It’s a very sad poem of a one thinking about their husband on a cold winter night.  The foreshadowing's painfully obvious in Blood of Youth if you're familiar with the story which makes it even more heartbreaking :(
凛凛岁云暮,蝼蛄夕鸣悲。
It is cold at the end of the year, the insects are dying and they cry out sorrowfully through the night.
凉风率已厉,游子寒无衣。
The icy wind blows bitterly, the wanderer has no clothes to fend off the cold. (her name)
Zhao Yuzhen quotes this line in the clip.
锦衾遗洛浦,同袍与我违。
The quilt brocade has been left behind at Luopu, I have left my wife behind.
独宿累长夜,梦想见容辉。
The nights are long when I sleep alone at night and I dream of my beloved’s face.
良人惟古欢,枉驾惠前绥。
The husband dreams of the old loving memories of the past, he dreams of the first time he picks his wife up on their marriage day
T/N: 枉驾惠前绥 - this refers to a marriage custom when the groom rides to the bride’s house to pick her up on their marriage day.
愿得常巧笑,携手同车归。
I wish that we would be smiling for the rest of our days, and that we would be together for all eternity.
既来不须臾,又不处重闱。
The husband does not stay (in the dream) for long, and we don’t meet in the bedroom.
亮无晨风翼,焉能凌风飞?
I wish could grow wings and fly like the morning breeze, but why can’t I fly with the wind?
眄睐以适意,引领遥相睎。
Feeling nostalgic, I pull up my collar and stare off into the distance.
徙倚怀感伤,垂涕沾双扉。
Packing back and forth disappointedly, my eyes are filled with tears.

Y, W, T for the ask game!
(Also you might want to reblogged to your cdrama side blog…)
(You’re right I’ve put it there as well thank youuu)
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Batman, SVSSS, Avatar (the last airbender, obviously, not the James Cameron film), Dr Who. I could also include TGCF but I have literally no idea what’s going on there At All except one of them has an eyepatch
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
This is actually so hard because generally I’ll read most tropes, it’s other things that will make me click out of a fic. It's not quite a 'trope' but anything tagged "not [character name]-friendly" I'm just... not going to enjoy that
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
'Die defending' is pushing it, but: The Blood of Youth, the parent generation (Prince Langya, the guardians, general Ye, Lei Wujie's dad) were all sleeping together, and Li Hanyi uses her mother's surname because no one is 100% sure who her dad is

The amount of plot and interaction they had to cut to fit the whole story into a 40 episodes series is just sad. The didn’t even put in establishing and transition shots. Things just start and end abruptly.
Anyway, I just want to talk about Xiao Se’s decision to return to Tianqi in the novel. After he returned from three snake island, news of his father falling ill reached Xueyue City, he’s already considering returning to the capital to see his father. Then two persons showed up at the gate of Xueyue City, gravely injured. They’re people from Baixiao Tang, Xiao Se’s shifu had sent them to track and thwart Dark River’s attempts on Xiao Se’s life as much as possible. They got critically injured during a fight with Dark River, and they ran to Xueyue City for help. When they saw Xiao Se in Xueyue City, one of them kinda put Xiao Se on the spot, telling him he’s able to hole up in Xueyue city because other people had been paying the price for his safety. So Xiao Se just got on his horse and rode out of Xueyue city without another word. In the novel, Sikong Changfeng didn’t expect it to happen like that, he’s caught off guard too.
In the drama, they introduced the character of Xiao Lingchen in a way that it looked as if Sikong Changfeng tried to use him to encourage Xiao Se to return to Tianqi earlier than planned. It made no sense for Sikong Changfeng to do such thing, Xueyue city was far from full power, Li Hanyi was injured, Baili Dongjun was out of the country, Xiao Se's martial arts hadn't fully returned to his previous peak level. In the novel, the tension in this little arc, came from the impulsiveness of Xiao Se's decision, and both his enemies and allies scrambled to respond. Having him making a calm decision in the drama doesn't have the same impact. The way he absolutely couldn't stand the idea of being a burden, having to be protected by other people, and would rather risk being assassinated and die alone on the road, made him such a brat, and that's the appeal of his character.
