Love Between Fairy and Devil (苍兰诀) - Eps 1-8 Review
A very early review because this drama is definitely... something! There is an intense division in the popular opinion of this drama, some absolutely love it, others think it is dumb and childish. Personally, I think that despite its obvious issues, it has a lot of merit and deserves a lot of the hype.
Tumblr media
Characterization: considering there has only been eight episodes, and there are 36 total, it makes sense that none of the characters have really had to develop or change dramatically. However, the initial characterizations of our main 3 (Dongfang Qingcang, Xiao Lan Hua and Chang Heng) are very solid, and clearly set their personality, goals and morals. Personally I love the characterization of Xiao Lan Hua. These “cute” type female leads can very easily become annoying and unnecessarily stupid, but Xiao Lan Hua, though innocent, kind and not the most intelligent of celestials, is by no means dumb nor annoying. She has extremely strong morals, generosity and kindness, and has the ability to think for herself - ignoring the celestial propaganda about the demons because she knows Dongfang Qingcang has been kind to her. Dongfang Qingcang’s characterization stability is a little weaker, but this is made up in how he is evidently beginning to feel and understand emotions. As we see him do no evil (except burning 2 people to save Xiao Lan Hua in like episode 2), it’s hard to imagine just how cruel this man is. The lack of information about his reign of terror also makes it difficult for the audience to understand why he is so desperate for Xiao Lan Hua to work her magic on the leaf of Chi Di Nü Zi. But, to an extent, I get the mystery behind his background, it allows us to see him as Xiao Lan Hua sees him, without the prejudice of knowing how evil he was. Chang Heng is also a very solid character. He is someone who is selfless and puts the stability of the universe and the happiness of others ahead of his own well being.
Tumblr media
Pacing: This drama is very fast. With so much to go through and only 36 episodes, it makes sense. But, despite the fast pace, it doesn’t feel rushed. This drama hits the sweet spot, where you really want to keep watching and keep watching (I watched all 8 episodes in a row), but don’t feel like too much information is being thrown at you. However, there are certain moments that feel very undeserved, or out of nowhere. For example, when Rong Hao discovers Xiao Lan Hua is Shen Nü. Why did he suspect her anyways? And if he suspected her, why doesn’t any of the other celestials? The ambiguity of Rong Hao and Chi Di Nü Zi’s characters are a plus right now, but I can easily see them being plot holes if the show only ever gives them random shots with no explanation. But I doubt that...
Tumblr media
Worldbuilding: Out of the past few xianxias I have seen, this drama does world building best in my opinion. Unlike some shows that throw way too much information at you in the first few moments, this drama gives you very little in the beginning, and only begins to reveal page by page the intricacies of this universe, which leads to the binge-ability of this drama (I really want to figure out who is who what is what!) Plus, this world feels so unique and fresh. Part of this is the costuming and CGI, part of this is its look into the business, bosses, different parts of the heavenly realm. One of my biggest complaints about the heavenly realm in other shows is how empty it seems, this show actually fleshes out the realm, showing the lives of the lowly and the rich.
Tumblr media
Acting: now, I have to be honest. I thought this show would be terrible, mostly because I did not trust Wang Heidi’s acting at all. He was terrible in Miss The Dragon, like to the point where you just laughed when he appeared. He’s not really that good in this either BUT at least you can watch without being completely taken out or bursting out in laughter which is huge improvement for him! The scenes where he was pretending to be Xiao Lan Hua were actually okay!! I’ve always maintained the opinion that Yu Shuxin is one of the most underrated actresses in the industry. People think she’s not good because her line delivery is, shall we say, unique, but in believing she’s a poor actress simply because they dislike her voice, they cannot hear how clear her words are, how she can easily control her emotions and how her mood is always clear in her voice. Acting wise she always adds little details that really show off her understanding of both Dongfang Qingcang (when she is in his body) and Xiao Lan Hua. She makes Xiao Lan Hua so adorable, someone you want to cry for when she cries, someone you want to laugh with when she’s happy. There are moments when she does overact a little, making Xiao Lan Hua almost caricature like in moment, but overall, I think she’s doing amazing. Zhang Linghe is pretty okay as Chang Heng. The scene where he crossed Xiao Lan Hua’s name off his list did make me feel sad, but overall, I don’t feel like he’s made this character particularly engaging (not to say the character isn’t engaging, he is, just mostly because the writing is good).
Tumblr media
Romance: The main CP is really growing on me. Chemistry wise, they are actually pretty great. I’ve seen videos of them doing interviews and variety shows and clearly they are friends, which really makes these early scenes so enjoyable because Xiao Lan Hua and Dongfang Qingcang are also friends. I really can’t wait to see how this relationship progresses, because it’s already very clear how cute they are. The switching bodies trope is actually sooooo funny because of how Xiao Lan Hua misinterprets his actions, so it doesn’t feel old or boring at all. Xiao Lan Hua and Chang Heng (FL and SML) grouping is also very cute, and so sad. The innate tragedy of their situation makes the relationship so interesting, and I think they have pretty good chemistry too! The second CP between Rong Hao and Chi Di Nü Zi is very exciting to me because they both seem like crazy people!
Tumblr media
Costumes: while I am not a huge fan of some of the costuming aesthetically, overall, I really appreciate how the designer managed to make such a new, different style for the celestials, while maintaining a classical style for the humans. I do think the fact that all the young celestial fairies wearing the same thing makes the idea of costume design kind of redundant, but I appreciate the spectacle! Personally I love Dan Yin in the fairy dress, while Xiao Lan Hua looks better in other styles. I totally get why the designer put them all in the same dress (to add a sense of continuity) but personally I wish Xiao Lan Hua’s wardrobe was slightly different to show her different personality and class.
Tumblr media
CGI: The CGI is amazing! The CGI for the heaven palace, Si Ming’s house, the place where they went to see the sunrise, the prison are all absolutely gorgeous. But the most impressive scene has to be when Rong Hao and Chang Heng were in the painting together, that was absolutely gorgeous! I used to think Love and Redemption was the best xianxia for CGI but this drama just took the number 1 spot.
Overall: If you can get through the acting and are a xianxia fan, I would 100% recommend this! A really different drama no matter how you look at it, and I would say you should at least try it even if it sounds unappealing (I thought it would be terrible and look at me now!)

When she is told that demon and god can never be, she takes his advice to heart to cultivate and achieve immortality. Upon her ascension, Hong Ning learns that Jin Xiu is marrying someone else. She resolutely abandons an immortal life to enter the cycle of reincarnation, simply to forget him. Jin Xiu defies fate itself in order for Hong Ning to be reborn. He hopes to repay his debts and protect her for a lifetime. A misunderstanding that cannot be avoided, an identity for which there is no escape; when spring ends, the two meet again. Hong Ning is destined to become Jin Xiu's trial in love. (Source: ChineseDrama.info)

hi! do u watch any hk dramas! there's an old one called 'beyond the realm of conscience' idk if youve heard of it but i would recommend if you are open to it!
Hi!
I don’t think I’ve watched any HK dramas (mostly because I’m lazy and I like to watch dramas while doing other stuff, but I don’t understand cantonese), but I actually have heard of Beyond the Realm of Conscience. I recall watching Yanxi Palace and then looking at the past works of all the main leads afterwards in desperation for something to watch.
The plot actually sounds extremely interesting so I will take a look for sure (probably next week though, I have so much to do this week). Anything for another well received Tang Dynasty drama.
Thank you for the recommendation!

Review: Love and Redemption
While I first started watching this drama out of pure curiosity of why people claimed it to be “the second most tragic drama” (after GMP, of course). While there are certainly aspects of this show that could be better, I find it fair to claim that it is a wonderfully made xianxia, and certainly one of the best in the genre within this decade.
Tumblr media
Plot:
According to legends, the god of war saved the heavens in a deadly battle against the demon a thousand years ago. Both fell from the heavens and disappeared from the world. Chu Xuan Ji was born to the world lacking in the six senses which makes her rather clueless and inept. She befriends Yu Si Feng, the outstanding head disciple of Lize Palace who falls for her, thus beginning a xianxia romance that is entangled with the conspiracies from the past. The Zan Hua Tournament is being held in the Shaoyang Sect and its leader Chu Lei has two daughters - his trusted eldest daughter Chu Ling Long, and the youngest daughter Chu Xuan Ji who is lazy and terrible at martial arts. When Yu Si Feng and Chu Xuan Ji meet through a coincidence, they forge a friendship with each other. Yu Si Feng falls for Xuan Ji despite the harsh consequences that he must face as it is forbidden for students of Lize Palace to fall in love. Meanwhile, Ling Long clashes with Wu Tong after she criticized his foul actions at the tournament. In retaliation, Wu Tong accidentally injures Xuan Ji and gets expelled. Having recovered from her injuries, Xuan Ji promises to concentrate on cultivating. Four years later, Xuan Ji and Yu Si Feng meet again. Si Feng wears a mask due to a curse that can only be broken if he finds true love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cast:
Cheng Yi (成毅) as Yu Sifeng (禹司凤)

Yuan Bingyan (袁冰妍) as Chu Xuanji (褚璇玑)

Liu Xueyi (刘学义) as Hao Chen (昊辰)

My Opinions:
Plot (My Rating - A-):
First of all, I quite like the pacing in this drama. As the matter of fact, towards the end I actually feel like some things were rushed, not dragged out. It’s never a show that allows you to press the fast forward button, because 1. the tragic moments are super intense and dramatic, and 2. you don’t dare skip over the cute/funny moments because you know there won’t be many left. Second of all, I really appreciate that the writers of this drama really decided that they were going to make the most tragic drama ever. They really dedicated themselves to that craft, and I think they succeeded wonderfully. In terms of plot points, I absolutely loved the whole 9 lifetimes idea. It really brings out the tragedy and beauty of Yu Sifeng - he will do anything to protect those he loves, especially Xuanji. I would not complain if every single lifetime was made into a 45 minute episode, though that would be 405 more minutes of Sifeng being tortured by love on top of the infinite amount of minutes that already exist in this drama.
One problem I had, again, was with the misunderstanding that separated our two leads. I understand that this misunderstanding was one that had to do with the morals, backgrounds and fates with both of them, and thus was obviously meant to be a separating factor, but with the way the two characters were written, it felt odd that it created such an amount of misunderstanding. Overall, the plot was good, it didn’t have any revolutionary ideas, but it turned up the tragedy factor and had consistent pacing (if not too rushed towards the end). I’m sure there were probably a few plot holes here and there (one of which is why is it so easy to destroy that huge jar thing towards the end? If that’s what’s keeping the universe at balance, shouldn’t it take more than just one Yuan Lang to destroy it?), but overall, solid plot.
Tumblr media
Characters (My Rating - B):
Sifeng is an absolute angel. He’s probably the most heroic lead in a drama who acts totally out of selflessness, who will help his loved ones no matter what pain it puts him through, and who can remain so kind, so unbothered mentally by whatever pain everyone puts him through. However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have faults. He acts irrationally in the face of love and he often mistrusts the people around him. He’s a very complete character that not only evokes viewer’s sympathy, love and admiration, but also makes sense when taking into consideration his morals. He rarely does things that are out of character. If I were to rate just his character I’d probably give an A+.
But, there are other characters in this drama. I do like Xuanji, not as much as I like Sifeng, but I like her more than most drama leads. Despite the whole lacking six senses thing being a super confusing plot hole of sorts (like she clearly likes people in the beginning, Linglong, Minyan, her father, and dislikes people, Wu Tong, but isn’t she supposed to be unfeeling? Also she screamed out of fear when she fell using the teleport tool etc etc), I liked how she wasn’t stupid, but simply naïve. She’s actually a pretty smart person, especially in the first half of the drama, when she defended Sifeng against the Five Sects, and then Minyan after he was caught from Tianxu Tang. She didn’t let herself be manipulated by her father or Hao Chen, but rather thought for herself, took into account what she knew of their characters and came to the correct conclusion that the Five Sects were being stupid. I found myself a slight bit annoyed when she took the Five Sects side on the whole Mosha Xing issue, but given that the argument was no longer Sifeng vs. her father, but rather demons vs. humans, I can sort of understand why she didn’t trust him. Also, he did lie to her a bunch of times so, I suppose that adds to the fact. Though, she failed to use the trait that I used to really like, which was the ability to take logic and character into consideration. Did she really think that Sifeng never loved her? Because like, with all the evidence right there in her memory, I find it hard for anyone logical being to come to that conclusion. Also, I really like how she eventually became as loving of Sifeng as he was of her. She was literally willing to destroy the world, and herself, just to save him.
Tumblr media
As I have said before, no one likes Hao Chen, and that’s good. He’s obviously written to be a character that you should dislike, not only because he gets in the way of Sifeng and Xuanji, but because he is clearly so biased against demons (despite the fact that most demons aren’t even bad at all); because he manipulates Xuanji/God of War so many times and doesn’t even feel guilty whatsoever; because he always says “for the three realms” and yet happens to do things that will completely destroy the peace of the three realms. There are things to like about him, like I am pretty sure that he does actually care about the three realms, and he does want there to be peace, but his ideology about peace, and love, and war are just so skewed that he ends up doing the opposite of what he wants to do.
Other characters were mostly likable, like Linglong, Zi Hu, Teng She, Minyan (most of the time), Xiao Yinhua, Ruo Yu (sometimes), Wu Zhiqi, etc etc. Some were evil for no apparent reason like Yuan Lang (why does he want to control the three worlds? What happened to him in the past for him to become this power hungry? If these questions were answered this character could be sooooo much more compelling) and Wu Tong (again, why did he start out so violent and cruel? I understand why he become a demon and helped them, but like does he not realize that it was clearly his fault first?) Also, the Heavenly Emperor seems like such an odd character. I understand he is the emperor and so he shouldn’t hold his relationship with Bailin and Xixuan above their faults, but like why was he so okay with like letting a totally faultless Xi Xuan endure several mortal trials all ending with painful deaths? And if that was because he was being a good and fair emperor, why does he let a game board decide fate? He also just stood there while the world was ending, and it took Xuanji to convince him to help her. I would like to know more about this guy and his complete lack of ability to care about anything.
So overall, while I think the main characters were written very well, with complex characteristics, some of the villains were just left tools to push forward the plot.
Acting (My Rating - A-):
So first of all, Cheng Yi’s portrayal of Yu Sifeng was absolutely amazing. He brought out all of Sifeng’s traits super well, from shyness initially to the cruelness Mosha Xing to his loving gaze at Xuanji to the heartbreak in tragic parts. I’m pretty sure he’ll become a star after this show, and can I just say, he totally deserves it!
Tumblr media
(Like can you see the pain in his eyes?)
Tumblr media
I was pleasantly surprised by Yuan Bingyan here. I really like how her acting style changed along with the new role she took, as Xuanji she was bright and cheerful, as God of War she was heartless and cruel. You can see in the nine lifetimes that the way she reacts to Sifeng’s death slowly changes. Her crying scenes need a little more emotion, but overall, a super stable performance.
Chemistry/Romance (My Rating - A):
The chemistry was just amazing. I find it interesting that their kisses slowly got more and more passionate as time went on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think part of the reason they have such good chemistry is because of the acting. Like oh my god their tiny reactions to when the other gets hurt really gives it away that they love each other.
The romance was also written nicely. While some people complain that Xuanji didn’t suffer enough, I feel like they don’t have to be equal in suffering in order for them to be a good pairing. You could tell from the very beginning that Xuanji liked Sifeng in a different way from other people. And the fact that they went through nine lifetimes together, each one when Sifeng died because of Xuanji... it just makes their romance so much more epic. Add that with good chemistry, good kisses, and good acting, well of course people love this ship so much! Xuanji would destroy the world for Sifeng, because the only person that matters in her world is Sifeng. Sifeng would put himself through ten lifetimes of torture just so Xuanji can be happy, because so long as Xuanji is happy, he will be happy.
Music (My Rating - A): this one is simple. Just listen to the soundtrack and you’ll understand my rating. I didn’t give it an A+ though, because while all the songs are great, there isn’t one in particular that I love.
Costumes (My Rating - A-): Sifeng’s costumes are really pretty. Some of Xuanji’s are pretty too, they get prettier as the show goes on, but some of the ones early on were kind of meh.
CGI (My Rating - A+): the best CGI in a cdrama. Just look at the scenes where Sifeng shows his wings!
Overall Rating: A-
Recommend For: People who like xianxia dramas and dramas that try to incorporate a lot of themes. People who don’t mind their heart breaking a thousand times while watching a drama. People who want to find a couple that you have to root for. People who like super epic guzhuangs with lots of subplots, mythology, reincarnations etc.

hi. I'm kind of new to chinese drama. I like historical drama and more about friendship with fighting skills with wuxia and xianxia. I've watched legend of awakening and the untamed. both are amazing. can you recommend me great movies that listed above my preference? thanks.
If you liked The Untamed, I think you’ll enjoy Ancient Detective (侠探简不知). I watched a few episodes a few days ago and I really appreciate the great fight scenes, the friendship, and the intriguing mysteries. This show follows Jian Buzhi as he tries to solve the mystery of his past while also solving whatever mysteries he stumbles upon in his adventure. I’d also recommend Joy of Life (庆余年) (which is in my list of my top 3 favorite dramas) which also has the male lead from The Untamed in it (Xiao Zhan), though he plays more of a supporting role. Joy of Life is an interesting combination of like wuxia/politics and also sci-fi (you’ll see why if you watch it). It follows Fan Xian and his adventures in the capital as he tries to discover the truth about the world and his mother. However, Joy of Life is more of a political show than a wuxia show. While I haven’t watched Handsome Siblings (绝代双骄) yet, I know it is based off an iconic wuxia book. It follows two brothers separated at birth who travel the martial arts world as they search for their true identities.
I’d also recommend Ever Night (将夜), which is a xuanhuan story (xuanhuan is more like western adventure stories but with eastern mythical elements). It also stars the male lead from Legend of Awakening (Chen Feiyu), and it talks about a young boy named Ning Que and his servant girl Sang Sang and their various adventures. The fight scenes in this show are pretty great too, and I like the world building a lot. I’d also recommend Legend of the Condor Heroes (射雕英雄传), which is based off one of the most famous wuxia novels ever. It follows a young man named Guo Jing as he tries to get revenge and meet his long lost sworn brother. (But if you don’t like not-so-bright male leads I wouldn’t suggest this drama, Guo Jing isn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed). While Wuxin: The Monster Killer (无心法师) isn’t a wuxia drama nor strictly guzhuang (it takes place in the Chinese Republic) it does feature a great trio of friends. This show follows an immortal being named Wuxin as he tries to search for his identity and fight monsters. Also, on the topic of Republic dramas, I’d also recommend Tientsin Mystic (河神), which is another mystery drama with some supernatural elements. It follows a young man named Guo Deyou who tries to a murder mystery while also awakening an old cult.
Lastly, I recommend Young Blood (大宋少年志) (aka my favorite drama ever). This show follows six young people as they learn how to become spies to help the Song Dynasty. While this show’s wuxia fight scenes aren’t great, the friendship is amazing! And it’s also an extremely intelligent show full of twists and turns.
Have fun watching!

Love and Redemption | Sifeng reveal his demon form

Hello. Recently I got into CDramas and I would like to watch some were male lead is from the dark/demon side.
The first drama that comes to mind is The Legends (招摇). The ML is the son of the demon king. It is a romance/xianxia drama.
There aren’t that many dramas with demon MLs, which is odd considering that quite a few shows do emphasize that demons aren’t inherently bad and celestials aren’t inherently good. I don’t know if The Untamed (陈情令) works, because while the main character isn’t a demon, he does try to cultivate to become one.
(SPOILERS HERE): Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) sort of qualifies for this. The ML turns into a demon king like two-thirds of the way into the drama. But before that he is the Fire God from Heaven.
He’s not a ML, but Li Jing from Eternal Love (三生三世十里桃花) is from the Ghost Tribe and then becomes the leader of his tribe.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

Love and Redemption: Some Thoughts and a Comparison with Ashes of Love
So, I’ve been watching Love and Redemption (琉璃) and while there are some visible faults, I also quite like some plot points and characters. So here are some of my thoughts and also, if your an Ashes of Love fan I totally recommend you check this drama out! The themes are similar, the character setups are similar, the worlds are similar too.
Tumblr media
I’ve just finished the 35th episode, and I’ve gotten to a point where a flower creature of sorts has been forced to become Ling Long 2.0. I actually really like this idea because it shows that a lot of people become evil because of the people they are around, not because they are naturally evil, their personality is naturally cruel or anything else of the sort. Ling Long grew up around “orthodox” people that, while also imperfect, weren’t sadistic like Wu Tong. Because of that she became a person that liked to fight for peace and removal of evil from the world. However, when her exact same personality was placed in a different atmosphere without previous memories she became just as sadistic and cruel as the people around her. I think that actually fits super well with the overall theme of this drama, which is that good and bad aren’t black and white. Even a person who is “good” in the subjective sense of that term can just as easily be “evil” if placed in a different growth environment. Honestly I find it so interesting that Ling Long went from A Zhu to A Zi (Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils reference) in like one episode.
A Comparison
When I first started liking cdramas, one of my first favorites was Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜), but I actually like this drama more. First of all, I think the pacing is better. The beginning of AoL was a little draggy now that I think about it, and Jin Mi only began to really show her feelings for Xu Feng around episode 30 (and it wasn’t even Jin Mi liking Xu Feng it was Saintess liking the King). In comparison, in Love and Redemption, we see from the very start that Xuanji likes Sifeng in a different manner then she likes, for example, Minyan, thus not only making it easier to ship them, but also being able to get to the tragic elements of the story faster. The CGI in Love and Redemption is simply amazing, beats 99% of cdramas honestly. I wish the cinematography was a little better because with this level of CGI, it truly deserves better camerawork.
Tumblr media
Also, I dislike when people call Xuanji stupid, because while in the beginning she is a little dumb, she really isn’t as bad as some other characters out there. She’s like what 20? And she’s never left home or her training place in her life. Why would anyone expect her not to make trouble? Or get in trouble? That’s like teaching how to memorize all the math formulas in the world, but not teaching you how to use them and then blaming you for not being able to apply them. I haven’t gotten to the really tragic part where Xuanji and Sifeng get separated, but so far I like her more than Jin Mi honestly. Xuanji might not be the smartest person, but I love how trustworthy she is of her friends and how high she holds her friendships. Unlike so many of the adults in this series, she actually uses logic to try to understand problems not just problematic and contradictory pieces evidence. Like when Minyan is accused of being betraying their sect, she doesn’t just go “oh there’s ‘evidence’? Then he must be guilty”, she actually thinks about his character and personality and how illogical it would be if he actually betrayed them.
Tumblr media
I also like Sifeng more than Xu Feng. When he was being accused of being a demon, he managed to bring up inarguable pieces of evidence that clearly proved he was not a demon, or at least not a problematic one instead of just going like “you should believe me because I’m so great!” (not that Xu Feng did that, but he did use ethos instead of logos, though, both apparently don’t work if you’re a male lead in a tragic xianxia). The tragedy of his character is done so well honestly. He died for Xuanji in 9 lifetimes. NINE. Please give him a happy ending. (Okay but I really dislike his second hairstyle with the two strings of hair hanging out and also Teng She’s hairstyle. Why can’t they just tuck that piece of hair in? It makes me feel so annoyed for some reason.)
Tumblr media
No one likes Hao Chen, and I’m glad. He hates people manipulating Xuanji, but he manipulates her all the time. I do agree that if Xuanji is happy without her six senses, she shouldn’t be forced to search for them, but she isn’t happy and she wants to search for them. So why should anyone who actually likes her try to prevent that? But I actually think his character is written relatively well. As the ruler (or second in command?) of the heavenly realm, he has to put matters in front of romance, though that doesn’t mean he has to manipulate her. I understand why he does what he does and I don’t think his character is as illogical as Wu Tong, but yeah, I definitely don’t agree with what he does. In comparison, Run Yu is truly quite likable. He does try to keep Jin Mi to himself instead of letting her be happy, but overall his story is written really well and evokes our sympathy.
Tumblr media
Oh and when it comes to friendships I also prefer the ones in Love and Redemption. First of all, it’s not just Xuanji and Sifeng who are cute together, I like that Sifeng is friends with Ling Long and Minyan as well, and they also become friends with Yanran (or Xiao Yinhua) and Ruoyu as well (though they could’ve avoided some tragedy if they hadn’t befriended him). I don’t know why, but I’m really excited to see what tragedy our OTP goes through later on, because I’ve seen the gifsets on Tumblr and boy am I excited for some tragedy!
But one thing that is better about AoL is definitely the acting. I think Cheng Yi and Yuan Bingyan did pretty good here, especially Cheng Yi, but Yang Zi, Deng Lun and Luo Yunxi (especially Yang Zi and Luo Yunxi) are more experienced and thus obviously better, especially when it comes to really emotional scenes.
FInal Thoughts
One problem I have with Love and Redemption, at least so far, is that the evil demons have no motivations to be as evil as they are. I’m pretty sure I’ll get a reason, but so far I have to say that they aren’t really well done characters in that sense. Especially Wu Tong. Like this guy has no backstory whatsoever, but is extremely cruel and sadistic from the first second we meet him. Maybe he’s like really just insane or something, but his whole “sympathy story” for why he joined the demons makes zero sense. He wanted to murder someone because him cheating gets revealed and then gets mad that the father of the person he tried to kill wants to get revenge. His story also contains two (as of so far) unexplained plot holes: 1. why every single sect decided to chase after him and 2. why he managed to escape death despite a bunch of skilled martial artists running after him for like a really long time.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I like the fact that the orthodox people aren’t exactly “evil” but their goodness is what makes them annoying. They don’t mean harm when they tried to test if Sifeng was a demon or if Minyan is a betrayer, they truly are thinking for the overall good, but their constant paranoia and need to do “what is right” and not “what makes sense” is truly what makes them unbearable. They sometimes throw away all logic for love, or sacrifice their own daughter in order to “do what’s right” instead of actually thinking of a method to not only save the daughter and keep the world at peace. It’s because of their goodness that they are able to be manipulated into idiocracy by Li Ze Palace.
Oh and one last thought. I don’t know if it’s on purpose, but the lack of people in the heavenly realm is really interesting. Like, maybe the producers didn’t have enough money, or shots of the heavenly realm with more than like ten people (not in war) don’t exist in the book either, but it creates the image that the realm is super empty. The human realm, despite all its faults and cruelties, feels so much more alive and full of life in comparison to the boring and cold looking heavenly realm.

Review: Joy of Life
Not going to lie, when I first started this drama, in February or something, I didn’t really like it all that much, I don’t know why, the first episode just lacked... something? But I tried again this summer and wow! Joy of Life has made its way on my favorite dramas ever! I can’t believe I have to wait 2 whole years for the second season!
Tumblr media
Plot:
Fan Xian grew up in a small town by the sea with his grandmother, following a sudden visit of a poison master, his peaceful life quickly morph into one filled with danger and hardship. After becoming rather skilled with medicine, poison and martial arts, he goes to the capital to find out more about his mysterious mother. He ends up on an adventure of marvelling the world, getting tangled in politics, finding true love, figuring out his purpose in life and secrets of his world.
Cast:
Zhang Ruoyun (张若昀) as Fan Xian (范闲)
Tumblr media
Li Qin (李沁) as Lin Wan’er (林婉儿)
Tumblr media
Chen Daoming (陈道明) as the Emperor (皇上)
Tumblr media
Wu Gang (吴刚) as Chen Pingping (陈萍萍)
Tumblr media
My Opinions:
Plot (My Rating - A):
The plot is one of the greatest highlights of this show (but then again, acting and characters are also amazing). There are so many schemes and ploys that only get revealed bit by bit until the big reveal of like “whose behind whatever whatever” and you’re just like super amazed. It’s so amazing! The pacing is also great because this show never leaves you bored for a second, every single scene is either super important to the plot, to the romances or to the comedy. It’s one of those shows that once you start, you cannot possibly drop.
Tumblr media
Scheming put aside, there’s also a really interesting human aspect to this show. Seeing Fan Xian, a man from modern times, speak with the people of Qing, who care more about the big picture than the moment in front of them, who wouldn’t think twice to throw themselves in front of death in order to save their country. To see him be so upset at a death, while everyone else calmly watches and insists that he ought to be totally happy about it because at least he didn’t die was so interesting, yet heartbreaking. Interesting because it really shows the fundamental difference between times, and heartbreaking because every time someone said “he was just a guard” I want to punch them in the face.
Tumblr media
Also the time-travel was explained in such a cool way. So much more complicated and interesting than the simple “it was a dream”. The scene of Ye Qingmei’s arrival in Qing was sooooo cool (fun fact, that was actually the scene that made me interested in this show). There are so many mysteries left to be solved next season and I cannot wait 2 years just to figure out who Ying Zi is! Or what is hidden in the manor! Or what their wuxia skills are if Zhen qi is not real. Or why the godly temple changes according to everyone’s imagination and how it just... disappeared. Honestly there’s too many questions left in my brain to possibly list them all.
Tumblr media
Acting (My Rating - A):
I mean, with veteran actors the likes of Chen Daoming and Wu Gang the acting level of this show must be good. Zhang Ruoyun is definitely one of the most talented actors of the younger generation, he manages to be both ruthless and cruel when seeking revenge, yet playful and witty other times. Li Qin is also a great actress! She does better with more complex roles (like when she turned evil in Princess Agents, that was some great acting!) but Wan’er, despite her simplicity, is still very lovable thanks to her portrayal. There was one scene with the emperor that really made me shiver (when he “forgave” that judge). Such good acting! I also really like Li Chun’s portrayal of Si Lili, Xin Zhilei’s of Haitang Duoduo (a very lovable character), Liu Duanduan’s of the Second Prince and Song Yi’s of Fan Ruoruo.
Tumblr media
Also Guo Qilin as Fan Sizhe and Tian Yu as Wang Qinian! The two roles basically created for comic relief are not only lovable, but also acted so well! The comedy doesn’t seem forced nor awkward, it just feels very natural. The only problem I have with the acting is that Fan Xian and Lin Wan’er don’t have that much chemistry. Like, they are cute together and will certainly be a great couple, but I just don’t feel the love between them. It’s kind of awkward though, especially when you see Fan Xian with the other ladies that like him because for some reason they manage to have more chemistry than the main couple.
Tumblr media
Characters (My Rating - A):
One of Wang Juan’s great talents in scriptwriting is the ability to make every character complex. There are no evil characters that are evil, to be evil, nor any characters that are only pure goodness, because that is how humans are. People have motives to do actions, and all actions have consequences. There is no black and white, only grey space. I found it amazing that, with one line, Cheng Jushu, a character that could have existed to be a tool in the plot, became a character worthy of sympathy and deeper analyzing. All the characters, with some exceptions of course, are so lovable! I love Fan Xian’s sarcastic and cunning personality! Actually, I love the entire Fan family! Fan Jian seems like a cold person on the outside but is actually cares a lot for his children, even Fan Xian, Liu Ruyu also treats Fan Xian like a member of the family despite his illegitimate child status (though it took some time for her to like him), Fan Sizhe is just so hilarious and cute, and Fan Ruoruo is such a great sister!
Tumblr media
Cinematography (My Rating - B+): I don’t like the fact that that sometimes the faces look almost like... green? But some shots are really pretty and beautiful. The fight scenes are also quite nice, no overuse of slomo and good mix of doubles and real people.
Tumblr media
Sets/Costumes (My Rating - A): The sets for the palace and several streets are really exquisite and seem really realistic. The sets for the brothel and the Qing palace were especially pretty. The costumes are also really pretty! Wan’er’s dresses look like those fit for a princess!
Tumblr media
Music (My Rating - A-): There are only two OSTs, but both are so great! Li Jian’s title song instantly brings you into a guzhuang mood (if that is a thing), while Xiao Zhan’s ending song is really catchy. The songs played within the show are also really nicely chosen. They fit with the scenes really well!
Overall Rating: A+
Recommend For: People looking for an intelligent drama that is not only full of suspense and mysteries, but also several storylines intertwined. People who want to see smart characters participate in a battle of the brains with all sorts of tricks and plots. Also if you liked dramas like Nirvana in Fire or Young Blood then Joy of Life is definitely your thing!

hi, do you know if there's any new information on the chinese remake of the korean goblin? i heard they were planning it and got super excited but now i haven't seen any news in a while :( thanks for your time and have a nice day!
I looked up the Chinese remake both in English and in Chinese and it seems the most recent news was from February 27, 2019, when Deng Lun was confirmed to be the male lead. I’m pretty sure Deng Lun is the male lead, but every other role seems be a question mark. I think it’s been confirmed that they will film it, but roles have not been confirmed and shooting has not started. Rumors for the female lead include: Zhou Dongyu, Xuan Lu and Yang Zi (though, that seems a bit of a stretch). Sorry I couldn’t find more information!

Hello there!! All of your posts on this blog are so helpful, I've just gotten into CDramas and these lists are great! I was wondering if you could recommend more of the kinds of dramas I've been enjoying? So far I've watched Untamed, Guardian, and The Lost Tomb. Can you tell me if there are any more series with a lot of fun and adventure and some really sincere relationships/bromances built on mutual respect and admiration? thank you!
Thank you so much! If you like these sorts of BL dramas then I recommend Winter Begonia (鬓边不是海棠红) which talks of Beijing opera during the republican period. Though it isn’t really an “adventure” story, it is a wonderfully made show featuring complicated characters and relationships. I’d also recommend My Roommate is a Detective (民国奇探) which is a mystery drama in which the main character helps a police officer solve all sorts of mysteries. Lastly I’d recommend Ancient Detective (侠探简不如) which is a mystery guzhuang drama that also features wuxia and bromance aspects.
If you liked the Lost Tomb I would recommend the Candle in the Tomb (鬼吹灯) series which is very similar to the Lost Tomb in the respect that is based on tomb raiding. I watched a bit of the first show in the series and the CGI and sets are great! There is also a great and long friendship between the two main characters, Hu Bayi and Wu Pangzi. Another “supernatural” drama that I’d recommend is Wuxin: The Monster Killer (无心法师) which is another republic drama about an immortal being whose blood can kill demons. The main character’s friendships and romances were both written so well, and the chemistry is so good! I’ve never watched Eagles and Youngster (天坑鹰猎), but it has really good ratings and also my favorite scriptwriter wrote the story. It also has some tomb raiding aspects to it.
I’d also recommend another drama I really enjoyed, Ever Night (将夜) which is a wonderfully made and acted series about a young boy who goes on all sorts of adventures. It’s a sort of wuxia/xianxia drama, so if you liked The Untamed, I think Ever Night would totally be up your ally. Another wuxia drama I’d recommend is Legend of the Condor Heroes (射雕英雄传) which is about a young man named Guo Jing who wishes to seek revenge for his parents, while meeting all sorts of high masters and enemies. However, if you don’t like slightly stupid male leads than perhaps this drama is not for you. The female lead is really smart, but the male lead is a lovable idiot with a pure heart.
My last recommendation is Young Blood (大宋少年志) if you can find it. It’s such an amazing drama with a beautiful friendship between the six main characters. What’s even better is you get to see how step by step they go from strangers to best friends. It talks about six people from different backgrounds becoming spies that help the Song Dynasty. Not only does it feature a good friendship, but the plot is extremely complicated and interesting, you never feel bored for a second!

Hi! I'm looking for cdramas with a calculative, inteligent, overdriven and reserved male lead, who is deeply in love with the main character. Any recommendations? I love complex, deeply flawed characters, but unfortunately most of them don't end up with the main character.
The first thing that popped into mind was Goodbye My Princess (东宫) which might be the drama that fits that description the most. Of course, if you’re looking for a cute romance story then Goodbye My Princess might not be the drama you’re looking for, but if you want something heart-wrenching and tragic then this is your drama! (Li Chengyin has to be one of the most complex/deeply flawed male leads I’ve seen. So few dramas dare to feature such flawed protagonists).
I’d say Rise of the Phoenixes (天盛长歌) also fits pretty well. The male lead, Ning Yi is quite a complex character and very smart as well. I haven’t finished this drama because it’s really long and rather complicated as well, but the cinematography, acting, costumes and chemistry between characters are amazing.
Scarlet Heart (步步惊心) is another drama that works. Again, all of the characters are quite complex, and as our female lead’s two love interests are both princes battling for the spot of emperor, they are extremely calculating and intelligent. None of the characters are perfect.
I guess Bloody Romance (媚者无疆) might work, though, the guy who fits your definition is the second male lead and thus, doesn’t get the girl. But he does really love the female lead, and is quite complex a character (morally grey would be the best way to describe him).
I’ve never watched Siege in Fog (人生若如初见), but it was written by the person who wrote Goodbye My Princess. While the male lead is not nearly as cruel as Li Chengyin, he is a complex character.
The Romance of Tiger and Rose (传闻中的陈芊芊) is another one I’d recommend. The male lead is probably the only one of his characterization to get a happy ending, and significantly change in the face of love.
In some ways, Twenty Your Life On (二十不惑) might work. It is a female centered drama, and the male lead plays a more minimal role, but he is complex and flawed, yet deeply in love with the female lead.

Hi can you recommend a contemporary romance preferably without the CEO/Employee dynamic. Thanks in advance
Here are some recommendations:
Go Go Squid (亲爱的热爱的) is a really cute drama that features a professional gamer (of sorts?) and a college student. It’s quite trope heavy + cliché but a really fun watch nonetheless because of the acting and chemistry. On that topic, Gank Your Heart (陪你到世界之巅) is also a pretty highly rated contemporary drama which also features e-sports. One of my favorite contemporary dramas is My Amazing Boyfriend (我的奇妙男友) which features a mutant who is forced to live with an actress with horrible luck in order to escape the people chasing after him. This drama is quite original, and the chemistry is nice too. However, if you’re expecting a really smart drama without any weird logical holes, then this drama won’t be for you. One of my favorite dramas recently is Kidnapping Game (十日游戏), but it is a crime drama first and foremost and a romance second. But, the chemistry between the two leads is amazing!
If you want to watch school dramas then I have a whole list of recommendations starting with With You (最好的我们), My Huckleberry Friends (你好旧时光) and I Don’t Want to be Friends With You (我才不想要和你做朋友). China really isn’t all that good at writing contemporary romance dramas I have to admit, which is why most of the ones that have okay ratings don’t actually feature romance.
