Thank you! 💖
2. Do you still buy CDs (or other physical media)?
Funnily enough, I stopped for a long time, but I've started buying both CDs and vinyl again recently. I'm getting increasingly disillusioned with streaming for obvious reasons and am finding myself gravitating back to physical media in general. I'm buying most things secondhand at markets and op shops though and finding some gems in the process. It's not music or a CD, but I've found some pretty amazing radio play recordings recently. This one feels like a particular steal:

7. Would you wear a t-shirt of a band you're not into?
If I liked the artwork? Probably, haha. That said, I don't wear that many t-shirts in general tbh, they don't really suit my body shape.
10. Favorite solo artist?
Genuinely impossible for me to answer, but I've been listening to a lot of Sharon Van Etten lately, so let's say in this exact moment that it might be her.

22. What's your favorite song or album from the year you were born?
Oooo, probably Ani DiFranco's self-titled album? I really love that one.
27. Do you enjoy making playlists? If so, are there any you're proud of and would like to share?
I love making playlists! I'm currently curating them though, so I'm not sure they're ready to share, haha. I'll see if I can finish one to share soon.
37. If you could travel in time and go to a concert of an artist who's no longer alive or a band that's no longer together, who would you choose?
It's cliche, but I really would go back to see The Beatles rooftop concert, or their final '66 show at Candlestick Park.
49. Is there a cover you like more than the original version?
Y'know what? This is probably controversial, but I adore Clare Bowditch's cover of Crowded House's Fall at Your Feet. She has such a haunting affect to her voice in general, but I love that she plays that up in the arrangement too.
The original:

Her cover:

I also don't like it more than the original, but I adore her cover of Hallelujah too

Hi! Can I get a Monster Prom matchup, please?
I'm a transgender man who's queer. I don't really have a label for my sexuality yet so I pretty much go with anything.
I'm into heavy punk/rock music and I enjoy dressing alternative! (I like to drift between grunge and goth). I typically enjoy going to indie concerts (the smaller venue the better) and taking walks through my city. I like digital art though I have trouble sharing it with others. I also love video games! Horror, slice of life, indie rpgs, etc are all fun! I wouldn't mind playing co-op with someone. I'm a huge animal person too; when I was younger, I'd go out in the garden after it had just rain and try to catch critters. I specifically love snakes, cats, and dogs. Off topic but I love cryptids too!
I don't like spicy food. Bummer, I know. I just don't have that good of a tolerance. I don't tolerate people who get off to making fun of others for their fashion choices (unless it's offensive). It gives off petty middle schooler vibes y'know? I also don't like people who try to act like they have the upper hand in a friendship/relationship.
I'm usually a self-reserved person but I'm not afraid to speak up when I want to. I'm often respectful towards others and I have a tendency to compliment people when they're dressed nice or simply wearing something I know (like a band shirt). My love language is gift giving; I love to spoil my friends and they're usually my first thought when I'm out shopping. I would say physical touch is my love language too but I'm usually not the one to initiate it lol.
out of all fandoms i write for, i would've never expected a monster prom ask. yipee !! i love monster prom sm its such a shame theres not much content for it anymore :'(
anyways, i think you'd look good with . . .
[🏈] Scott Howl !!
Tumblr media
♡ Since the beginning of your time at Spooky High, Scott has always been up your ass about your intriguing style, which is very much different that anyone else he knows.
♡ So, can you really blame him? He's a diehard supporter of your fashion choice and always tries to squeeze his way into a concert with you. Honestly thinks you're the coolest person he's ever seen, like, ever.
♡ The compliments never end. "You're so handsome!", "You look cute today!", whatever he can come up with. He makes sure you know how much he loves you, daily. Every hour. Every minute.
♡ Although Scott is more used to loud and rough crowds, he very much enjoys being in your company at said venues. Is never not close from you and is always giving positive feedback when he can, even if he doesn't particularly like the music and isn't familiar with it.
♡ Whatever makes you happy makes him happy, really. You could be excited over a banana and he'd be so fucking ecstatic over it too. When you're sad, he's sad. When you're angry, he's angry. Though, when it is needed, Scott will try his best to comfort you and get you through tough times.
♡ ...Walks? Walks. In the CITY? Yeah no you're never going on another walk alone AGAIN. Constantly asks you when you're going out, and if he can tag along. Unless you have a schedule- then he's up and ready ten minutes early. It's his favorite thing to do with you! He'll point out anything funny/interesting or anything he thinks you'd like.
♡ Thinks you're super talented and will praise your art to no ends if you decide to show him a piece. You're better than Bob Ross, Picasso, and any other historical artist he can think of. As long as you're comfortable, he'll mention and brag about your amazing art skills to anyone who'll listen.
♡ Co-op video games? He may not be as good as you are, but he's surely trying his best. If you end up playing a game in which you fight each other, he'd probably accidently win. Just smashes the buttons and hopes it works tbh. Though, after figuring out the basics, he'd purposefully lose for you. Gets all excited when you win, "yeah, beat me up! go go go!"
♡ Do I even need to mention anything about you being an animal lover? No. I think this one explains itself quite well LOL. You two would probably have a pet snake, or a bug.
♡ Mostly does the speaking for you in public settings and ordering food and whatnot. Doesn't mind at all! He never pressures you to speak or do anything you're not comfortable with. Though he'll definitely hype you up and try to encourage you to break out of your shell more! (Mainly because he doesn't really understand self-reserved people).
♡ You're in luck! Buy Scott a present and he'll go insane with buying you gifts back and will shower you in kisses & "thank you's". Could be the smallest little thing or something you made for him yourself and he'd love it forever. Cherishes anything you give him no matter what. Even if it's a shirt that doesn't fit or an item he can't use.
♡ Don't worry about initiating physical touch, Scott has got it covered! Understands boundaries (if you have them) perfectly clear, but sometimes forgets, though he deeply apologizes for this and tries to make up for it any way he can. Adores hugs, kisses, cuddles, you name it. Anytime and any place, as long as you're okay with it.
♡ He's just a big goofball that loves & cherishes you no matter what, you could grow seven tongues and five eyes and he really wouldn't care. As long as you're the same, self-reserved, caring person you always are; his love for you won't ever change.

Paint the World (The Way it Should Be)
Title: Paint the World (The Way it Should Be) Author: randomwriter57 Rating: G Word Count: 2,291 Event + Prompt: @sormikweek day four - Pendrago: Loss/Protection Summary: Everything is in place. Well, except for one thing. Notes: I decided to write a kind of role-reversal fic wherein Mikleo is a human and Sorey is a seraph. Society in this fic is a little bit different here - the main important thing is that all people can see seraphim. I’ve put together a doc of notes if you want to see some of the other background/worldbuilding I did when writing this. I’ve pasted the link at the end too, in case you’d rather read it after the fic itself. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this one!
Also on: AO3
Everything is in place.
Mikleo gives the items on the table a final glance-over, but it isn’t necessary. He’s checked a thousand times; he could draw this table and its contents from memory at this point. After so long, he has everything he needs.
(Well, except for one thing.
Or rather, one person.)
To any other human, the array of items on the table might seem strange, and maybe a little bit shocking. But to Mikleo, every piece makes sense. Everything has its place, and its purpose.
Satisfied, he heads through to the kitchen, where the plate and cutlery he used an hour ago still needs to be washed. With a sigh, he pulls out a pack of matches and gets to work lighting the stove. He’s gotten pretty good at it, now - he doesn’t even catch his fingers with the flame this time. Once the stove is alight, he sets a kettle filled with water on top of it, and sits down to wait.
There’s not much else he can do, after all.
All his books lie with his clothes and some other knick-knacks in the biggest bag he could find in his tiny shared home, too deep in storage for him to dig out. His conscience reminds him of the small pile of paperwork on his desk which he could be preparing to submit, but he stops himself. There’s no need for him to complete it now, after all.
Mikleo’s never really been good at being idle. He always prefers having a purpose.
(Starting tomorrow, hopefully that won’t be a problem.)
He’s debating doing a thousand-and-first mental inventory of the table in the living room when the front door creaks open, quietly thudding in the frame.
“I’m home!”
Not a moment passes before Mikleo is out of his chair, already in the hallway before the newcomer can move from the door, let alone remove his thick travelling cloak and bags. Still, the newcomer’s face splits into a smile filled with love.
“Welcome home, Sorey,” says Mikleo, his own lips curving into a matching smile.
Sorey steps forward, connecting their smiles in a gentle kiss which Mikleo easily reciprocates, tilting his chin upward for better access. When they part, Mikleo takes a step back, allowing Sorey room to remove his cloak and bags.
“Sorry I took so long,” Sorey says, leaving his bags on the floor by the door. It’s not a sure sign that he isn’t staying long, but Mikleo wouldn’t be surprised if that is the case. “They were harder to track down than I expected.”
“Well, they are travelling merchants.” Mikleo watches as he removes his cloak, hanging it on the peg beside Mikleo’s own, a matching pair. His long ponytail tumbles from where it had been held inside the hood, falling into its natural end at the small of his back. In the dim light of the hallway, the golden-white hue shines with its own luminescence.
It’s a shame, that he has to hide it in public.
“That they are.” Sorey moves on to shucking off his boots, using Mikleo’s shoulder to prop himself up as he does. “I found them eventually, so it’s all good.”
A hint of jealousy pings within Mikleo’s heart, but he ignores it. If he lets it grow, it will only bring chaos. “Are you hungry?”
Had Sorey been human, his stomach may have growled in response. Instead, he meets Mikleo’s eyes and nods fervently. “What’s for dinner?”
“Leftovers from the past week. Take your pick.”
Sorey recognises the jab and lets go of Mikleo’s shoulder in favour of giving him a teasing push. “C’mon, I apologised already, didn’t I?”
“I know. I just haven’t figured out how not to cook for two, yet.” In his mind he adds, ‘And I’m hoping I’ll never have to.’
“I’m not complaining, if it means I get to eat your cooking when I come home!”
Mikleo rolls his eyes, turning to lead the way to the kitchen. The kettle is still heating up, the water slowly reaching higher temperatures. He ignores it in favour of opening the pantry, letting Sorey see the leftovers piled up from the previous week.
Letting out a low whistle, Sorey kneels down to look at the bottom shelves, pulling out various boxes until he finally comes across something he wants to eat. As he does this, Mikleo lights another ring on the stove, readying a pan so he can heat up the leftovers.
“It’s times like these when I wish I was a fire seraph,” Sorey says, watching him pour leftover curry into the pan. “Cooking would be so much quicker.”
“Being able to produce your own fire doesn’t make cooking times any faster.” Mikleo glances at him through the corner of his eyes. “Besides, lightning suits you far better.”
As Mikleo picks up a spoon to stir Sorey’s food, he feels arms curl around his waist, and a head rest on his shoulder. Warm lips find his jawline, pressing a few lingering kisses to it. He leans into the contact. It’s at times like these when he remembers just how much Sorey has a penchant for physical contact.
“How was your trip?” he asks eventually, determined not to fall asleep in this comfortable position.
Sorey pauses in his kisses to answer. “It was good! The seraph with the merchants was completely different from what I expected, though.”
“Really?”
“Mhm. His teeth were all pointy, and he scowled a lot.”
“Sounds friendly.”
“He agreed, though.” Sorey smiles into Mikleo’s shoulder. “He said he’d join the cause.”
Mikleo turns his head and nudges Sorey until their lips meet, a little clumsy from this angle. “Good job.”
“Thanks.” Sorey chases his lips, but Mikleo turns back to face the stove.
“If you don’t want your food burnt, you should probably stop distracting me.”
“You know you love it.” Still, with only one more chaste kiss to his cheek, Sorey backs off, taking a seat at the kitchen table. “But yeah, he and the merchants all want to help out. Isn’t that awesome?”
It really is. It’s revolutionary, in fact - humans and seraphim working together towards freedom. The whole Glenwood continent, uniting no matter their race or nationality.
This has been their dream for as long as Mikleo can remember. And now, it is becoming a reality.
But it’s not enough, to watch it happen from the sidelines.
“How have things been for you?” Sorey asks, unaware of Mikleo’s change in thoughts. “No one has been harassing you, have they?”
“No one suspects anything, if that’s what you’re asking.” Mikleo stirs the curry, watching bubbles begin to appear when he leaves the spoon still. “Everything is the same as ever. Nothing ever changes in that place.”
“I suppose it is the palace,” Sorey says, shrugging. “They have rules for how things work, right?”
“It’s not just the rules, though. The people never change. Their talk never changes.” Mikleo feels his annoyance bubbling up and tries to quell it. It would do no good for him to become angry about this.
Sorey senses the change in atmosphere. In a gentler tone, he says, “They’ll understand eventually.”
“Maybe so, but their opinions won’t change.”
The water in the kettle simmers, bubbles popping against the metal.
“Mikleo, what are you trying to say?”
“The same thing as I’m always trying to say.” Mikleo removes the pan of curry from the stove, extinguishing the flame before he forgets. Once that’s done, he pours the curry into a bowl and puts it on the table in front of Sorey, taking the other seat at the table, across from him. “Working there isn’t doing a thing.”
“You’re working to change things from the inside. Just being in that position gives us an advantage if we need to do anything drastic,” Sorey says. “I know you haven’t forgotten that.”
“Perhaps, but there’s no way I can bring up the subject of human and seraphim coexisting without revealing myself as a traitor. You and I both know that working in the palace can either be a safety blanket or a death sentence.”
Sorey sighs, looking down at the untouched bowl of curry. They’ve had this argument plenty of times before, and Mikleo knows he’s tired of it. They both are. But it’s necessary, especially now.
“I vowed to protect you,” Sorey says. “If you travel with me, you’ll only be in danger. Even being here with me now is dangerous-”
“And you think I care about that?” Mikleo hears his words growing in volume. Still, he cannot stop the threads of anger lacing his words. “Did I not vow to protect you, too? The promise we made that night was not one-sided.”
“Even by letting me live here you’re protecting me,” Sorey says.
“It’s natural for you to stay here, though! I’m not able to do a damn thing, when I’m stuck in Pendrago and you’re travelling all over Rolance. You haven’t even been able to travel as far as you like because you don’t want to go too far away.” On the table, his hands clench into fists. “I didn’t come all this way just to be a liability for you.”
In the background, the kettle begins to whistle, its pitch sailing through the roof.
“You’re not a liability,” Sorey says. “I just want you to be safe-”
“And I’m saying I want the same thing for you!” He presses his fists onto the table, leaning over them as he stands. “But I can’t be sure of that when you’re halfway across the continent and I’m stuck here, unable to do a thing.”
Sorey’s face crumbles. He’s always disliked conflict, but this argument is one of the worst, despite its frequency. “I…”
“I’ve already lost everything,” Mikleo says, letting each word ring in the air. “My parents, my hometown, even years of my childhood. I wouldn’t be able to bear it if I lost you, too.”
“It’s the same for me,” Sorey says, voice quiet and sad.
“Then let me come with you. That way we can both protect each other, just like we promised.” Mikleo sits back down, his anger fizzling out. “This dream is ours together, is it not?”
A moment passes before Sorey nods. “It is.”
Mikleo doesn’t reply, instead getting up from his seat. He removes the kettle from the heat, letting its whistle die down. The sound rings in their ears even after it has ended.
“Okay.”
He turns around. At the table, Sorey faces him, wearing a genuine smile.
“Wait, really?”
Of all the things they’re ever argued about, this has always been the subject Sorey is most stubborn about. For him to finally concede is more than surprising to Mikleo.
Sorey’s smile gains a hint of wryness, like he saw this outcome coming. “You think I didn’t notice the stuff on the living room table? I doubt there’s any persuading you not to come with me.”
“Oh.”
“Besides,” Sorey says, standing from his seat at the table. “I’m kind of glad you pushed the subject. Even though I want you to be safe, I want you with me more than that.”
“Sorey…”
Mikleo leans against the kitchen counter as Sorey moves over to him, a hand coming to rest on his waist. He leans their foreheads together, their noses pressing against each other.
“So, when are we doing it?”
He restrains the grin which wants to come to his lips in favour of pressing them against Sorey’s. Naturally he finds his hands around Sorey’s shoulders, pulling him even closer. Just as Sorey opens his mouth to deepen the kiss, however, he pulls back.
“Whenever you’re ready,” Mikleo breathes.
“I’m ready anytime.” Sorey leans forward again, trying to capture Mikleo’s lips once more.
“Then eat your curry first. You can help me dye my hair after that, then we can go.”
Sorey’s free hand curls through Mikleo’s brown locks, pulling him into a deeper kiss. When they part, Sorey’s breath isn’t at all laboured. “I’m kind of going to miss this colour, but you’re really going to suit white.”
“I won’t miss it,” says Mikleo, pressing a closing kiss onto Sorey’s lips. “My boss might, though. He’ll wonder what on earth happened to the brown-haired Mikleo who always obeyed his word.”
“I think he’ll be worrying about the state of his office first and foremost.” Sorey glances to the side where Mikleo can see the table of oddities, looming in the next room.
Smirking, Mikleo says, “It’s only paint. Not like it’ll last forever.”
“That’s a lot of paint, though. And rope.”
“How else are we going to get to the fourth floor of the palace?”
Sorey laughs and pulls away, finally sitting back down at the table to get his half-cold curry. Between mouthfuls he says, “So tonight’s the rebellion. What next?”
“What else? We travel the world in pursuit of our dream.” Mikleo sits down across from Sorey, this time feeling much lighter than before. “Though there is the question of where to start.”
“I have an idea,” Sorey says. “How would you feel about going back to our roots?”
“To Elysia?”
He doesn’t need to ask the question, of course. His roots are burned into his brain - almost literally. The fact that their gentle village came into contact with such a calamity is a difficult thing to forget. It’s been years since that time, though. Maybe they’ll even be able to find survivors.
(A wizened face smiles at him from his memory, and his heart aches. Hopefully he’ll have survived, if anyone.)
“How about it?”
Mikleo blinks out of his thoughts and smiles at Sorey.
“Sounds perfect.”
At last, everything is set.

hey jesse, absolutely loved dielectric breakdown & async. i've never really been into mystery before this, but now i'm on a kick. i was wondering if you had any mystery or noir type recs with a similar vibe, where the mystery is less "isolated murder case" and more... unravelling a complex political event or personal history or something, if that makes sense.
I think by the serialized nature of a lot of hardboiled fiction (a lot of the contemporary stories were published in magazines like Black Mask or Dime Detective), you don't get a lot of stuff that really goes into personal history or really wide scope. most stories tend to be pretty self-contained, and mysteries generally don't involve the detective's personal history because that makes it hard to write follow-up stories.
Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett does involve the history of Personville, the story's main setting, though that's not really a mystery so much as the Continental Op deciding to get rid of organized crime by systematically fucking up the entire city. obviously not going much into the protagonist's personal history considering you never even learn the guy's name.
I think if you're looking for mysteries involving a wide scope and the protagonist's personal history, you can give the Knight & Rogue series by Hilari Bell a shot, which is a sort of low-key fantasy setting involving a knight who's taken on this thief guy as a squire and they end up having to figure out who's ruining everything this time, up to and including conspiracies to overthrow the government, and over the course of the series you learn more about the two protagonists, their background, and their families. it's six books, starting with The Last Knight. I've had difficulties finding a digital copy of the first three books, but your local library can probably find a physical copy.
in a similar vein, the Beka Cooper books by Tamora Pierce (I don't actually remember the name of the individual books at the moment. it's like... Terrier, then Bloodhound, then Mastiff?) are also mysteries in a light fantasy setting--the protagonist has the ability to hear ghosts sometimes. those are also pretty large scope mysteries, though the personal history doesn't have much to do with it. it's a solid series, though the third one is a bit weaker, I think.
if you like games, The Red Strings Club is an information gathering sort-of visual novel game involving a cyberpunk mind control conspiracy. it's a fairly short game and I enjoyed it a lot. do be warned that a character gets deadnamed in it once though I believe that's more of a lack of understanding on the developer's part than any kind of malicious intent.
there's also the Ace Attorney series, which is full of colorful characters and some silly stuff, and also features my son, Phoenix Wright. it's a visual novel mystery series that's focused not just on finding out what actually happened but figuring out how to prove it and send the culprits to hell (or, y'know, prison and possible execution by hanging, since this is Japan). the story kind of starts small in scope but escalates as the series goes on, and a lot of the later games focus more on the main character's backgrounds. some of the puzzles are kind of obtuse, admittedly, but they're still really good games. the Miles Edgeworth Investigations spin-offs are also very solid.
if you just like mysteries, Return of the Obra Dinn is amazing. you use a magic watch to see the last moment of the people on a ship to figure out how everyone died (or not), and also who is who. it's presented in 1-bit black and white and it's also hands-down the best investigative game ever made because it actually makes you do the investigating and clue searching and stuff without guiding you through it. you have to be the detective, where other games just have you play as one.
lastly, if you're still hanging around on this blog for the next however long, there's also the novel I'm working on (shameless plug), The Crow's Last Call, which is a hardboiled mystery about a detective in alternate history 1940 Chicago who comes back to life when she dies, investigating a resurrection that turns into learning about why she comes back to life when she dies and also the demon mafia who killed her the first time seven years ago. it's meant to be light urban fantasy written in the style of contemporary hardboiled fiction. though probably by the time I get this one cooked up you'll be out of the mystery mood.
this is what comes to mind--unfortunately I haven't read as much original fiction as I'd like in recent years, so my recommendations are always a little old. if all else fails, you can ask for recs at your local library--that's how I find a lot of stories.

After reading your content I'm confident that Alex would be a Mary Sue if he were a she. He has nearly no flaws and has too many skills. Your writing is good but Alex could be better as a character if you eased off of him being great at everything.
Hi anon,
First off while I appreciate the feedback, I didn't exactly put out there that I was looking for any.
Secondly, thanks for reading my stuff! Especially if you read enough to get the feel that Alex is OP. That's a lot of content to get through, be it his car/d or the threads I have here.
Thirdly, it's RP. If Alex is a Mary Sue, more power to him, y'know? I designed him around what little canon information there is based on Inside Eden's Gate and Far Cry 5. In the film we see him handling weapons, fist fighting with expertise, and handling stressful scenarios with ease. In the game we read about how he escaped John Seed. The only person we know to have done that. Not only does he escape but he gathers people together and leads them out of the county. He's a right menace.
As the writer I know Alex isn't great at everything and have written him doing many things poorly, but this may be where we just agree to disagree.
He misreads social cues, he'll make incorrect assumptions, he's killed people and justifies reasons for it. He's definitely flawed, but you may be right, he may be a little too amazing. Heck he may be a Gary Stu.
Which is why I'm going to keep writing him as I do.

Long post, full but probably annoying to read "story" under the cut
TLDR: A possibly troll post on steam about Afabs being weaker on average then Amabs lead to 1 concerning quote, 1 pretty cool quote, and me cackling out loud and waking up my dogs on accident
Holy SHIT this thread is amazing
So, there's this guy on the steam community tab for Crusader Kings 3 (if you don't know what that is, it's an ahistorical game taking place in the middle ages) And he is asking why don't women in the game have a debuff to prowess-
For context, there are 6 skills in CK3 that a character can have: Diplomacy, Martial, Stewardship, Intrigue, Learning, and Prowess. Prowess is a bit of a separate skill because while all the other ones give a number to show how well versed someone is in something knowledge wise, Prowess is the show of muscularity (the most obvious of what it shows, since it literally changes how muscular a character is) and the general aptitude that someone has in personal combat
Now, this thread started off fine I guess because he just said that Women (Afab women specifically but that isn't really a needed distinction for this game since y'know Middle ages if you're trans and open about it you're probably either seen as a weirdo or whatever else) have less muscle mass than men do, which is fair.
2 people try to give reasons why it doesn't make sense and he shuts them down, a few other things happen and it's clear that this guy
Doesn't understand how fighting match-up works (or at least doesn't full grasp the concept)
Is mildly sexist
But my main fucking issue and the part where I fucking laughed at him was when he wrote, and I fucking quote-
"But sure, keep believing that top female athletes have any chance at competing with their male counter-parts"
LIKE BRO???? YOU STARTED OFF KINDA FINE BUT WTH????
But there was also this wonderful fucking quote afterwards (from someone else)
"Then again we'd realize that women make better leaders and politicians. The outrage would be epic."
^ This quote came from someone who agreed with his original statement, saying that Amabs have better muscle mass, more testosterone (which helps build muscle mass), and that on average men tend to be 15% taller, which mean sthat they are naturally better at combat. But he then pulled out the fact that women should have buffs to other skills (Diplomacy, Stewardship, and Learning) to make up for it.
Anyways I'm fairly certain the original poster was a troll, but I still found it hilarious. (The fact that op could entirely be serious is concerning though.)

(Rabbithole Anon) Y'know, I was going to send in an ask about just they could have made a compelling way to show how some people may have become hunters through pressure rather than an age excuse if they wanted to say some people weren't ready (joining to protect a friend who wanted to be one, wanting to travel for a variety of reasons, it being a general expectation but the person being hesitant) but it led to me wondering wait, would certain careers require a hunting lisence?
Tumblr media
Okay, I love this rabbit hole. XD It illustrates a couple of RWBY problems here and it's the fact that they often are lacking in the character development/character journey department, and that they're often lacking in the world building department.
We actually have plenty of characters that can serve as examples for people who maybe should've thought twice about entering the Academy (when they did.) There are people who entered the Academy for the wrong reasons/not noble reasons, people who entered the Academy during a time they might not have been ready, and people who would be full on dangerous with a Hunter badge, and most of our mains fall under one of these categories (though mostly the first two.)
Ruby - Two years below the standard age of her class. Whether or not she was at the skill level of a first year (she was,) and whether or not she'd received special training from Qrow (she had,) Ruby was still essentially a kid, and her mind and body both hadn't developed completely. Ruby should have been traumatized after the Fall of Beacon and been allowed to show that more as a character, she should've had straight up PTSD, she should've been allowed to have emotion in Volume 4 than Jaune's sidekick who makes sad eyes when she sees him grieving. Weiss - Her main motivation for joining Beacon was to reclaim her family legacy. Yes, her desire was to reclaim it and use it for good, but it was still arguably more about personal and familial glory. On top of that, Weiss has been blatantly anti Faunus and has never so much as addressed that. Weiss's character journey should have reflected more personal growth, and either her unlearning much of her Faunus racism and clearly changing priorities from her name and family legacy and onto the actual people in need, or her flaws should've led her into being more of a morally gray character who displays her selfishness and pride (in a way that's actually addressed and treated like a flaw.) Yang - She expresses admiration for people like Ruby who want to help people and be kind, but her main point in becoming a Huntress was getting thrills and going where the wind takes her. She didn't join Beacon for any sort of serious purpose, and even when she rejoined Team RWBY in volume five, it was to be with her sister and not because of her own morals (not that I think she's lacking in morals, just that her main motive was different.) This could lead to her having to figure out a lot of what she actually wants, being unsatisfied with being a Huntress in Atlas, being in over her head when things get serious, being more mentally exhausted than the others after long days, etc. Jaune - Wasn't ready to enter Beacon. Idk if he just wasn't allowed to go to a lesser combat school like Signal or if he flunked out, but he wasn't up to scratch to get into Beacon and cheated his way in. On top of that, he lacked in the emotional maturity department as well when he entered. Jaune was a little more invested in his own appearance than Ruby was, but still seemed to have similar good reasons for wanting to be a Hunter. And he did grow a lot. But he was much less prepared, skilled, or equipped to deal with the training or the career and it's a miracle he didn't die in the initiation. Granted, Jaune was handled arguably better than anyone else, since a lot of this was addressed, but these days it feels like it isn't actually playing a part in his character anymore that he's way below the people around him, and I feel like it should still be impacting him. Penny: Honestly, Penny seemed very newly born during the Beacon Arc. She might have been combat ready, but she also started spilling secrets to the first person who was a little bit nice to her, and was clearly naïve and childlike. Imagine if it had been Emerald that had befriended Penny instead of Ruby. Penny dying and then getting resurrected should've been deeply traumatizing for her and it should've made her undergo some major changes and been treated with importance in the show. Qrow: Literally wanted to be a Hunter in the first place to try and learn how to murder Huntsmen. He might have changed later and it’s not exactly relevant, but he arguably shouldn't have joined when he did either. Meanwhile, Nora's just one big mystery, because we don't know why she joined, and Ren likely joined for good reasons, but neither of them have ever actually talked about their motivations. The only character we can safely say joined for noble reasons and who was up to scratch and ready when she entered is Blake, who also had good reason to not fully trust the system she was working with, so there could've been complications and character interest there as well.
Please don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean I don't think the others should've been in school, I love that they were! I just think the writers should've explored the various ways they might've been not fully ready, not completely well suited to the job they took. The characters are allowed to be flawed and to flounder and it'd make them more full, nuanced characters imo.
On top of that, we have other Hunters to look to as well, outside of our main cast. Cardin, for example, was a terrible person, still in school and already abusing what little power he had to target a member of an oppressed minority group and blackmail other kids into doing his bidding, while plotting revenge on someone for correcting him on his anti-Faunus answer to a question. People like him should not be Hunters, and he was arguably our first sign (of many signs) that the position of Hunter can and will be taken advantage of and misused by bad people. And although the After the Fall/Before the Dawn books aren't canon, while reading BTD (I haven't finished it yet,) Coco and all her team members but Velvet also struck me as people I wouldn't want to be Hunters and wouldn't want to wield any sort of power. Coco is proudly described by one of her friends as sadistic, lets her unfounded opinions of people cloud her judgement, shows respect and admiration towards criminals, and enjoys her classmates being afraid of her. Fox is self-described as sadistic as well and is a bully who tried to use a classmate's phobia against them in a brute-like interrogation. And Yatsuhashi is leagues above the two of them, but also bullied Neptune despite saying the words 'I don't want to be a bully' and threatened him.
There are so many ways the writers could've explored people who went to Beacon too soon, weren't ready, or entered for the wrong reasons. Instead, outside of one conversation in season two about the girls’ motivations and Ren exploding that Jaune cheated his way into Beacon all the way in season eight, it seems like the only take away we're supposed to get is 'all these kids are officially the thing they wanted to be in the beginning and they're all amazing at it, woo!' No acknowledgement of the fact that they could use higher education still, that some of them are still immature or naïve, that some of them are still below the combat level they should be in, that some of them kinda haven't done super well since they left Beacon (cough Ruby cough.) It's all just... Flat, lackluster. And meanwhile, characters like Cardin were written out of the show easily. We've had plenty of examples of corruption in the Hunter business, but the show hasn't paid any attention to that and still is treating being a Hunter like the only true noble goal and the only good and non-corruptible way to defend people, despite the fact that it clearly isn’t. Being a Huntress is not better or safer or more noble in-universe than being an Atlas soldier/Ace Op/Atlas hunter. I’m not saying that all of this needed to be featured, but exploring the differences in motivation and how the Hunter lifestyle affected the various mains could really flesh out their characters. Instead, by the time everyone is heading to Atlas in volume six, they all pretty much have the same reactions to everything and the same motivations and the same beliefs. The rare deviation - like Ren in volume seven and eight - is treated as bad and a mistake that must be rectified, rather than... A natural consequence of the group being full of different people with different upbringings and different motivations that result in different opinions. That sort of thing is only ever explored as a problem that makes someone lacking, and it’s really weird and it makes the show feel... Juvenile, and lacking in nuance or depth when it comes to the characters, which is a really big shame, since the characters have a huge amount of potential and exploring the differences between them and their reactions to being in way over their heads would be - I think - the natural place to take their characters? Especially because so far their storyline has been... Not the highlight of the show.
But, as for how semblances and Hunters should impact the world building, there’s a lot to say about that! They don’t explore a lot in RWBY outside of what’s relevant to the mains, leaving the world building feeling flat and like the world itself doesn’t matter much. RWBY often feels more like a video game world than anything else, which I believe @why-i-hate-rwby-now has pointed out, so credit to them for helping me realize it. There’s one large location per continent and a couple small villages where they only really talk to a town leader and village blacksmith, or encounter a fight, relevant NPCs and characters only going to certain locations that can further the plot, characters only mattering through the ways they interact with the protagonists and seemingly getting benched with nothing to do if they aren’t currently plot relevant, health bars that can be monitored over scrolls, every weapon and semblance has a name even if that name isn’t ever mentioned in show or might not really make a lot of sense, frequently encountered enemies of various threat levels who the characters can plow down without remorse because they’re not sentient or don’t have souls... The list goes on. But one of the ways that it feels very video gamey is that the magical powers actually don’t seem to impact the world.
We know people can have auras even if they don’t have semblances (Mercury, Torchwick, Watts,) and we know lots of even grown people don’t have auras (the citizens of Mantle in danger of dying of cold while our aura having mains aren’t,) but also that auras can be unlocked, by well trained seventeen year olds (Pyrrha,) and we also know that semblances can be unlocked from a very young age due to trauma (Ren, Neptune in EU) but some people are born with their semblances (Qrow and notably Blake use language suggesting they were born with their semblances,) and some semblances are passed down or hereditary (the Schnees.) Semblances can be passive (Qrow, Clover, Ironwood in word of author,) and uncontrollable, or active (almost everyone else,) and some semblances have carried personal negative effects like in the case of Qrow who was even named for being bad luck and Robyn who said people were on edge with her because she can sus out the truth via skin contact when she wants to. Also Mercury’s father was able to somehow take away his semblance.
That’s... Pretty much the extent of our knowledge and it doesn’t tell us much. What RWBY does is give each character abilities that make them iconic and different from each other as fighters, with a shield function that wears down slowly to explain how they can take certain hits and keep going while also allowing them to eventually suffer higher damage when that shield wears down. They had a character get this shield ability unlocked to explain the existence and function of it, and featured some characters who didn’t have the super powered abilities like Roman, an early enemy meant to herald in new, harder enemies who are more plot relevant, and Mercury, who makes up for it by having higher speed and functions exclusive to him through his prosthetics. And then they seemingly built a regular world unaffected by these powers. It sounds like a video game. Civilians just don’t have this power or the shield because they act as non-playable characters. In a way, it almost makes sense to me in conception, because when RWBY was originally created, it was high on visual appeal, fight choreography, and character design. The plot elements were small and the character stories seemed to be pretty simple, the only real complication to this being the White Fang plot, which has always been a major blight in RWBY. But one of the reasons why this video-game feel kinda worked at the start of RWBY was because the story and characters weren’t meant to be the focus of the story, so although the world building at the start was definitely lacking, the audience knew that things like auras and semblances were meant to hype up and add interest to the main highlights of the show: Design and fight choreography. At least that’s what I assume. But in volume three, they started to lay the groundwork for more, bigger plots, more focus on the story, the characters journeying to the outside world, undergoing personal arcs, and that’s what V4 and onward started focusing on.
To be clear, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I started really liking RWBY for its potential and concepts after getting through the first couple episodes of V1, but I actually really enjoyed quite a bit of V4 and V5 even though the design drastically changed and the fighting had gone way down in quality because I found some of the new focus on characters and the plot to be compelling, interesting, or to also have a lot of potential (though I was let down over and over in regards to pay off later.) However, with the new focus on the characters and storyline rather than design and fight choreography, they really needed to do some legwork on fixing the aura and semblance systems and paying attention to world building and making sure the world felt well put together, nuanced, and real. And I don’t feel like they ever did that.
Why is Pyrrha able to unlock auras? Well, because the writers wanted to explain the concept of auras and used Jaune - the unprepared - to do it. But now, auras are actually an important part of the story - for example, the people of Mantle don’t have unlocked auras, so will die of cold, but it doesn’t affect our heroes because they do have unlocked auras. So who can unlock auras? Is it a learned skill or is it hereditary? If it’s a learned skill, why isn’t everyone eager to learn it especially in places where it’s life or death if they don’t like in Atlas? If it’s a hereditary skill, why aren’t the people who have that skill put on a pedestal and being pressured into using that skill to save civilians in places where having an aura is the difference between life and death? In either case, why aren’t there people who professionally unlock auras? Why aren’t they on the pay roll in Atlas and Mantle? If it’s a skill that all powerful hunters have, why aren’t our heroes (who we’re supposed to think are now more powerful than Atlas’s best) unlocking auras for dying children in Mantle? Why don’t specialists and longtime fighters with Qrow, Winter, Robyn, Maria, or James have this ability if it comes with skill, time, or talent?
Why are semblances unlocking or morphing in times of trauma so rare? Why didn’t the Fall of Beacon unlock loads of new semblances and new semblance abilities? Why didn’t Ruby get a new semblance upgrade when she saw Weiss getting stabbed? Why didn’t Weiss unlock a new semblance ability when her plane was crashing? Why didn’t Pilot Boi unlock his semblance during the same occasion? Why is it that Jaune didn’t get a semblance upgrade when the light bridges were disappearing? Why didn’t Blake get a semblance upgrade when Yang fell into the void? Why did Ren get a semblance upgrade because he was upset while with the Ace Ops after Oscar got captured, but Nora doesn’t get an upgrade while she’s electrocuting herself? If semblances sometimes unlock in times of truama, why is it that some characters like Oscar and Torchwick and Jaune pre-V5 who we know have encountered lots of trauma just still don’t get semblances? If you can train your semblance into upgrading, why is it that we don’t see long time hunters and fighters unlock more semblance abilities, like Qrow, Winter, Robyn, Maria, or James? It just doesn’t make any sense! And I get that stories always have things happening just because the writers want it, but in RWBY, the hand of the creator is so obvious that it’s ridiculous.
And then there are other questions. Do people avoid bad labor practices out of fear of causing a semblance awakening? Well, from what we see of the SDC, the answer is no. So why not? Why weren’t they worried about an uprising? Work rights becomes a lot trickier when you have to add in tons of qualifiers. Maybe it’s illegal to use a semblance at work, but the SDC also has a history of child workers like Adam who can’t always control it (like Neptune couldn’t control his,) so are there laws protecting child laborers? Perhaps not, since you know, they were already child laborers, so were already suffering unchecked. Are there laws forbidding the use of semblances in government buildings, non-combat driven schools, or parks and libraries? And meanwhile, how would any of this apply to people with a passive semblance? How do you figure out that someone has a passive semblance? How do people know if they’re born with a semblance? Are there people that spend their whole lives having semblances that never get discovered? Do people have semblance detection... Semblances, that they get paid to use or do so out of charity? Did the Schnees rise to power due to their powerful and hereditary semblance, perhaps? Are people discriminated against if they don’t have semblances or pressured to become Hunters if they discover they do have semblances? Shouldn’t civilians in Mantle and Atlas be joining combat schools in droves in the hopes of unlocking an aura so they can better survive? And shouldn’t there be discrimination against people with certain semblances? Outside of Robyn saying she’s personally experienced mistrust, and Qrow’s self-hatred, we don’t see any real prejudice against certain semblance types, or for that matter, any praise or extra significance pointed to certain other semblance types. It would go a long ways towards world building if there were things like people having to divulge their semblance or lack thereof before entering Beacon, or for people to have to register a semblance evolution, or for Emerald to have lied about her semblance because “everyone knows illusion semblances automatically draw suspicion,” or for Qrow to comment that he’d never seen Clover in a Vytal Tournament, only for Clover to say his semblance was deemed ‘cheating’ back when he was in school so he hadn’t qualified. And on the flip side, you could have things like semblances being judged as better and more powerful based on how useful it might be, Pyrrha keeping her semblance on the DL because it’ll just bring more unwanted admiration on her, Sun keeping his own semblance on the DL too because it always make people put a lot of expectations on him, while Neptune’s semblance leaks and he deals with people treating him like he’s selfish and cruel for not wanting to use his own “gift of a semblance.” And people like Jaune could be bullied extra because he doesn’t have his semblance yet, and people in the stands at the Vytal Tournament could be chatting about “when are they gonna pull out their semblances?” and get annoyed and pouty when people don’t. To be fair, we do get things like Mercury’s father having declared his semblance a crutch, but... Still. why isn’t there more of this?
And we see the need for Hunter protection in villages like Kuroyuri and the village that Team RNJR stops to help on the way to Mistral. Small villages outside of the four kingdoms fall to Grimm, or are in danger of falling to Grimm. Ships get attacked by large and dangerous Grimm, we see (corrupt) Hunters on the train to Argus, accompanying for safety, and we see that with a rise of Grimm activity in Mantle, Hunters are dispatched to help kids travel to school. In a world like RWBY, fighting is essential for survival outside of the Kingdoms, and became very essential in the kingdoms as well once schools started going down. You’d assume there should be Hunters accompanying everyone traveling outside of the Kingdoms, resident Hunters living in villages outside the Kingdoms as their on-hand protectors (and more than one Hunters seems to be needed.) Hunters also could be extra protection for anything that’s definitely going to increase negativity, like hiring Hunters to bodyguard funerals seems like something that could be normal in the world of Remnant, and for visiting graveyards (we see Ruby get attacked by tons of Grimm when she visited Summer’s grave in the red trailer.) On top of that, celebrities and rich people hiring Hunters seems like it’d become pretty common. But all that we see outside of Dee and Dudley are traveling Hunters stopping to help people out of the goodness of their heart while they go place to place, and Kingdom Hunters who are assigned to things like border control, clearing out Grimm near or in the Kingdoms, and things like that. What we see is a Kingdom-centered morality complex our protagonists are one hundred percent invested in, Hunters are Kingdom driven and anything outside of that is a kindness, a job they can take or leave in passing. And on top of that, it seems like there aren’t a lot of people in the Hunter profession, and I feel like there should definitely be more. There are people like Jaune who didn’t make the cut but accepted that, we can only assume that there are drop outs too, so like... How many kids are there actually in a year at Beacon? I mean, look at where the Relics were found in the forest during initiation at Beacon.
Tumblr media
This gives us a rough idea of how many people are in each year at Beacon. Assuming everyone graduates school and there’s no drop outs and no deaths, that’s a graduating class of twenty. That’s a very small number, comparatively. The job of a Hunter is dangerous. We know of Hunters that died (Summer, Pyrrha, Amber.) We know a lot of Hunters that have other jobs that take a lot of their time (Glynda, Ozpin, Robyn,) and lots of people who quit being Hunters too (Maria, Tai, Raven,) and Hunters who aren’t always on the field like Qrow who was a teacher for a stretch and acted as Ozpin’s spy, the Ace Ops who became part of Ironwood’s inner circle and therefore had a bigger picture, and even all of Team RWBYJNR, who got their Hunter licenses but are also more concerned with bigger picture stuff (if you don’t believe me just look at volume eight where JRY stopped defending Mantle to go rescue Oscar, and Team RWBN + Penny, who were involved in big picture stuff like launching Amity and then saving Penny the Maiden/their friend.) So out of a class of twenty, how many of them are even staying on the field? For a show pushing the narrative that Hunters are the ultimate saviors who are the only true good defense for the world, that condemns even the notion of an army... Like they villainized sending Team FNKI onto the battlefield while also treating it like proof of Ironwood’s evil when he didn’t want to stay and fight when Team RWBY said to, and also made Ironwood’s desire to move into having a robotic army to get soldiers off of the battlefield part of his... Over reliance on machinery, which is full on suspicious considering their ableism towards Ironwood and the fact that he literally has to rely on machinery, but that’s a topic for a different post and this one is already so long. But yeah, my point is that we’re meant to see the army as bad. So if we’re meant to see Hunters as the only true and pure form of defense (which is already off because we know it’s corrupted,) there ought to be way more people in the Hunter field.
As for the schools, we only know of a couple of schools that exist outside of RWBY as combat schools that seem to act as basic training before people go to Beacon. We know of Signal, the school Ruby and Yang went to that Qrow was a teacher at for awhile (I have lots of teacher Qrow headcanons, but sadly Qrow being a teacher wasn’t very well explored,) and we also know of Sanctum in Mistral and (in the EU) Oscuro in Vacuo, presumably one of these existing in Atlas as well. I personally headcanon that there are a lot of these smaller combat schools littering the whole of Remnant (but then again, I also headcanon that the Kingdoms of Remnant are bigger than just one very large city, lol) and that a lot of people attend these schools even if they don’t go on to join one of the Hunter Academies, but this isn’t necessarily supported by canon, I think. But as for other schools...I think it’s fair to assume that there are at least elementary schools, since everyone can read, write, and presumably do basic math, and what we do know is that Ilia went to a prep school in Atlas (which was info dropped in Blake’s pre-V5 trailer, not even stated in the show proper,) so we can probably safely say that people who don’t go to the Huntsman academies go to some form of high school, but you’re right that we don’t see this actually in action. I personally always headcanon that Whitley had a tutor, since Jacques wanted to avoid too much outside influence.
I am so sorry that this response got so away from me and I myself got into so many rabbit holes as well. XD I just have a lot to say about the world building in RWBY (or sometimes lack thereof.) Although I admit that I’m not as into or as good at analyzing as blogs like why-i-hate-rwby-now, but yeah, this is... A very long post. Sorry!

001 - Kingdom Hearts
Favorite character: On the villain side: VEXEN IS BEST ORGANIZATION XIII MEMBER. Shoulda stayed evil, though. I like it when he complains and screams about everything and hates everyone. He's one of my favorite villains, just, like...in general. So fun to write. Also attached to Demyx, but I actually liked him more in III than II because it reminded me of my rawr lolspeek weeb days when I f/o'd him without knowing what f/o'ing was and then transitioned this to shipping VexDem like heck. On the hero side: MY GIRL KAIRI! But honorable mentions go to Sora, Riku, Aqua, Ven, Terra, Xion, Roxas, Lea, Ienzo, any Disney character I loved beforehand (this is way too fuckin many to list), Merlin (OKAY I WILL SINGLE HIM OUT), Yen Sid (I'LL SINGLE HIM OUT TOO), you know what let's also single out the Mickey+Donald+Goofy power trio...just...any KH hero who isn't part of the Yozora stuff or the KHUX stuff. ...Except I also LOVE Strelitzia, and she is the only KHUX-exclusive kiddo I care about but I care about her MANY. (Oh, and there's a least fave I have who's a "hero" but that's a debatable label). I would go on about why I love all of them but...that's too many characters to elaborate on
Least Favorite character: See, I think the real answer is Yozora, but the thing is I just tend to forget about him or not care (unless I'm doing a weird AU where he's Noctis' bratty Nobody, don't ask). He kinda represents the Shark Jump and I don't like watching that scene where he literally petrifies Sora for not being strong enough. But again, I can just kinda forget about him if he's not fed to me through a social-media unit. The one I LOVE TO HATE is Master Eraqus. The man actually triggered me back in the day. He is purity culture. He is the overbearing parent who will not accept you unless you are perfect. He is by and large the reason VAT didn't communicate with each other properly. He was the one who taught Aqua to think in absolutes. He lied to Ventus for years and then insisted to kill him was the only option, and then, when Terra tried to defend his brother figure/friend without knowing WHY Eraqus was doing such a thing, Eraqus didn't offer an explanation and instead switched targets to Terra citing that the problem was Terra's lack of OBEDIENCE. Eraqus is just very "my way or the highway" and uses his moral high horse to justify doing things that utterly lack compassion in any regard, which is something that GETS to me on a deep level, and let me tell you, I hated him for so long until I realized he was actually a super fuckin fun guy to imagine as a Bigger Bad in AUs that either have the KH protags teaming up or have villain protags needing a "greater good lawful evil" figure. And I just have found too many good memes about him cheating at chess and killing children. I have to laugh. Making fun of him is fun. He's a ridiculous character. That said, this recent trend of "erase everything bad he ever did and paint him as the ultimate hero of the saga" makes me raise eyebrows for SEVERAL reasons
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): VexDem, SoRiku, Kairi x Jaune Arc (RWBY), Aqua x Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy) x Bayonetta, IsaLea, Ventus x Papyrus (Undertale), that was six but they all needed to be mentioned
Character I find most attractive: Ienzo. HOO BABY he is adorable. I saw someone make a Valentine's Day gifset of KH and FF characters shortly after III dropped and seeing his smiling face paired with a romance quote made my heart FLUTTER
Character I would marry: Probably Ienzo, see above. He's also a very kind guy. Favorite redemption in the modern era.
Character I would be best friends with: I hope the Destiny Trio would adopt me into their friend circle the way they've tended to do with every other inter-world denizen they've come across. I would love to have them as my positivity squad. Or, y'know, two positivities and one "it's okay to screw up" guy. Just. I would love to hang out with them. I often worry that I'm unlikable to my faves, but even though I would usually prefer to hang with the villains, I can pretty much guarantee these three would be open-minded about me. (Do I kiiiiinda wanna be friends with Vexen though? Of course I do. He'd hate me but maaaayyyyybe he would see me as one of his pet idiots who makes him look smarter, and we could bond over our fragile egos?)
a random thought: You ever think about that one NPC lady in Traverse Town who refused to tell you where she was from because it was none of her business? You ever wonder where she WAS from? What her world was like? How she ended up being the survivor of the Ansem Apocalypse when it hit her? All I know is that when I read her lines out loud (I used to read KH speech balloons out loud all the time), I gave her a Southern accent for no discernible reason and I stand by it. That woman has a twang.
An unpopular opinion: I don't want KHUX to be canon because I feel it's smaller-scale and takes a lot of mystery out of the worldbuilding. I always assume that the KHverse just includes ALL worlds in fiction, and that includes their thousand-year histories, meaning the Age of Fairy Tales should've happened long long long LONG LONG LONG ago and not five generations. And whatever screwed up the world should've been more than just five people having a fight, and whatever saved it should've been more than just five people getting along, and Daybreak Town really suffers from having to stick to mobile-friendly graphics and therefore is the least aesthetically attractive KH town ever, and I don't like that Lauriam and Elrena used to be such selfless people. I do still love Strelitzia because she's shy and relatable and quirky (sitting on the roof) and she questions authority and if you go with shipping subtext she's probably bi (or pan?), but I don't like the "Lauriam's dead sister for his arc's drama" bit. I liked when Marluxia was angry because he wanted to run Organization XIII but it was in the hands of an idiot who wasn't him. And more than anything I just like imagining that the Age of Fairy Tales was something bigger, further in the past, and more mysterious than something designed for a mobile game. Scala ad Caelum, however, I like a lot better because there IS a lot of mystery there and also it's a very pretty town with an amazing design.
my canon OTP: I really only count the Disney couples as the "canon" ones, so this is a question of picking my favorite Disney couple that shows up onscreen. I hope I'm not forgetting an important one, but I think the title has to go to Aladdin/Jasmine, which is always perfect in everything. (This would be an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY if KH had ever adapted Treasure Planet, and if it ever gets the mind to adapt Treasure Planet then even if I don't care about that game I will immediately declare that Amelia/Doppler takes the KH canon OTP crown. *taps watch* Get on it Squenix)
Non-canon OTP: SoRiku, which I counted as "basically canon" after DDD until III decided it wasn't sure. But I'm just a sucker for how DDD is the two of them all "HE'S GOT MY BACK AND I'VE GOT HIS AND I'D DO ANYTHING FOR HIM SO LONG AS HE'S HAPPY." It's just the best kind of Friends-to-Lovers, except when you take all canon into account it's Friends-to-Rivals-to-Enemies-to-Friends-to-Lovers and that's a very juicy dynamic. BUT ALSO: VexDem, which is a nostalgia ship SO STRONG I had to accept that it eclipsed my former Vexen ships by a mile and I wanted to go back to my roots. That one, I have a much longer essay about that I'll just have you refer to so I don't repeat myself for pages. To make a long story short, their scene in III was JUST DELICIOUS.
most badass character: OOF THEY'RE ALL BADASS but in the end it's between Sora and Aqua, because Sora gets the widest RANGE of abilities across the series that he masters while Aqua gets the most POWERFUL abilities due to her Mastery (Command Styles seem like they'd be the most OP things ever in-universe and I'm here for it because flashy battle moves make brain go brr).
pairing I am not a fan of: SOKAI, Xehaqus, RikuNami, Vanitas/anyone not evil
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): OH BOY. KAIRI THE MOST. YOU ALL KNOW WHY: lack of screen time, Fridging for drama, forced romance to invite death flags (they really wanted to milk that death to get people talking didn't they?), giving Alyson Stoner ZERO direction to actually follow up on Hayden Panettiere's performance. But then I remember that they made Vexen redeem and lose his entire personality and I just...uuugghhhh. I can't believe he died twice in this series. And then Demyx is FUN but also I know he's flipped sides as well, which means he won't be fun much longer! Xehanort seems to switch motivations to whatever makes him the biggest threat (and several of Eraqus' old flaws seem to be mysteriously glued onto him), Sora isn't a motormouth anymore, Riku just doesn't get anyone who cares about him anymore because everyone's distracted by Sora and Kairi, IS ANYBODY GOING TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL ISSUES THAT DROVE THE WAYFINDER TRIO APART, oh God Marluxia and Larxene you're good guys now what have they done to you
favourite friendship: I really like each of the trios. But you know what's even BETTER than the trios? If you put...all of the trios together...meaning Sora, Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Aqua, Terra, Ven, Roxas, Xion, Lea, Hayner, Pence, Olette...and then you added Isa back in there...and you gave them Ienzo...and you brought back Naminé...and you say that Subject X is Strelitzia and you have her turn back up so she can have justice done...AND YOU HAVE AN ULTRA KEYBLADE GROUP OF FRIENDS. As for Vexen, any purely platonic relationship I have for him is a crossover but trust me I have many crossover pals for he
character I want to adopt or be adopted by: See everyone I listed above in the friendship question. They can either mentor me or let me be their big sis/mom. But also, I will GLADLY be Merlin or Yen Sid's daughter. (But also would I kiiiiinda wanna be a VexDem daughter? This is the worst idea. Still wanna try)

ajsksk hey! i'm so sorry for not taking time earlier but i've got a little bit of time rn. christmas is a very busy time for my family since my brother's birthday follows right after the christmas days on the 28th!! and then my birthday is on the fifth january and y'know we cook a lot of food and bake a lot.
i can't for the life of me remember if i sent an ask already, but yeah the emojis where wwx. i thought going with a skull would be too obvious so i went with something that could've been wen ning too, except for the paint. which is kind of a reference to the fact that in a lot of modern aus wwx is an artist and that in canon he drew lwj!!
some questions: do you prefer spicy, sour or sweet food? i'm not a fan of spicy things since i have a low tolerance (in contrast to my siblings and my father), i actually quite like eating sour things because i think it's really enjoyable. you could see me biting happily into a lemon just so i can taste the sourness. i like sweet things too!!
did you have any wishes for christmas? and if yes, did you get it? i got a new game called ghost of tsushima, it's set in ancient japan and is about the samurai jin sakai and his journey of freeing his homeland from the mongols. which kind of results in him going against the samurai codex so that he can protect his people. that's how he earns the title "the ghost" (while yeah his uncle insists that jin would never go against his teachings and the samurai codex, which... he kind of does but also doesn't?? it's hard because he is the last real samurai in tsushima and they're at war). anyways, sorry for ranting!!
do you have any tattoos or would you like to get any? if the latter, what would it be? if not, why wouldn't you want any?
i hope you have a fun day 💞 - ❄🐇
i like all food? there’s a sichuan flavor profile called “fish fragrance” and it’s garlic, ginger, green onions, sugar, and vinegar mixed with sichuan spicy bean paste. So can i just say yes? look. fish fragrant eggplant is one of my top favorite vegetarian dishes. OMG so gooooood. so is fish fragrant pork... which sounds weird but is DELCIOUS... mmmmm... i like eating sour things too. definitely guilty of giving myself chemical burns from warheads as a kid... did anyone else do that? lol.
uh... wishes for xmas? i was hoping for something but it was really expensive and i didn’t actually ask for it. i didn’t get it but i don’t mind.  i did get tea though! and teas i don’t usually drink or buy for myself!! so i’m excited! :D japanese teas are not something i end up exploring often... i still don’t know if one of the teas i got is an oolong or a black tea though... it’s labeled oolong black ginger or something like that. looks like a black tea... but maybe a roasted oolong? ope. the ginger smells are AMAZING in that tea and overpower other notes... so i’ll have to brew it and guess. i’m so excited to try it! I also got a yuzu sencha that might have matcha mixed in... so i’ll have to find my good filter for it... and a hojicha. mmmmm. tea!
i don’t have any tattoos. I am unlikely to get any. it’s mostly because i don’t want to permanently put something on my body. i only have my ear lobes pierced. I’m fairly conservative/reserved... except for the streak of color i have in my hair... but i can always grow that out... i say this but i’ve had a streak of color in my hair since 2006... so eh? lol. other people want tattoos? by all means. I'll admire the pretty and have things to talk to people about. i love so many of my friends’ tattoos! one of my friend has what he calls a nerd barcode. he has a D&D dragon ampersand, a cow-like wolf from wheel of time, and something else that i can’t remember. those are all things HE WILL TALK ABOUT so having it on his arm is pretty neat. He also has a biohaz symbol on his chest. something about a game he used to play. idk. another one of my friends does a lot of amtgard and has chainmail/armor patterns on his upper arm. really neat looking. if i got one, it would probably be something octopus related or an inside joke with my husband... but like i said, i don’t really want a tattoo.

It took me a while to recollect myself after today's chapter. After excitedly getting up super early (went to bed around 4am, woke up at 7) and waiting patiently for the episode to come out, I had such high hopes, y'know? (Warning: this gets a bit long.)
But that quickly ended in a punch to the gut that, honestly, left me speechless and with full-body tremors. I haven't had an anxiety attack in a while but it hit me hard and took me some time to calm down. I'm used to disappointment from series I watched in the past, but I sincerely did have faith in this one. V7 was what got me back into rwby, mainly because I had dropped it after skipping around the events of V5. I had noticed Qrow getting attention on this site, and went "sure, why not?" and checked the tag. This was when chapter 3 aired, and man, was everyone going wild over it-- for completely good reason. I've always been attached to Qrow as a character. I've had the lowest times in my life where I didn't think I would get back up, and here he was, the character that I saw parts of myself reflected in-- suddenly earning a potential partner that, for once, could balance his semblance and quite possibly everything else. We weren't wrong in the least in that regard.
Speaking from a narrative design point, the outer, cinematic dialogue for c12 was just... so wrong in many ways. It felt like characterization was thrown out the window, Tyrian aside. I've written countless scripts for games, and as a writer you are responsible for forming an immersive dialogue/monologue that will direct the audience into experiencing specific emotions. The lines here, while beautifully delivered by the amazing voice actors, gave me the feeling of two utter, complete strangers that were pitted against each other rather than two people who have been together for quite some time and have developed a bond. The words, especially from Clover, were visceral, cold, and almost robotic. Completely OOC actions aside, the tone set in the scenes were so unnatural it caused me to pause the video several times to digest what had been said.
It hurt to hear Clover of all people, the same man throughout the volume show his concern for ALL civilians, including Mantle (cue back to c9 where he was the one to panic about rushing the rwbyjnr + ace ops/qrow to Mantle to save the people, as well as his stern orders to prioritize the safety of the people), to suddenly become a callous soldier set in his ways. He turned his back on the people that depended on him, which seems to be a reoccurring theme in these past few episodes. That doesn't reflect the man I've seen, admired, and analyzed throughout the volume. This one today felt unnatural and lacked all empathy that he had once shown (literally just in c11 you can *hear* the relief and joy in his voice once he reports that they've apprehended Tyrian, the psycho who has been out on a killing spree and Clover explicitly expressed malice to). This episode just completely forgoes the warmth I've been hearing in his voice.
I'm angry, depressed, and quite frankly, so fucking annoyed at how this episode was handled, from the standpoint of a narrative design/script writer and a fan of the show since high school. There were so many other routes they could have taken, granted, that could have given us just as much angst/shock value without the cost of a character that was a major pillar of support for Qrow. There has been so much wonderful development throughout the volume that sincerely gave me hope that it was going to be okay for him, and in turn, be okay for me and many other individuals who see themselves in Qrow's shoes. But that hope was demolished the moment I heard Clover speak so coldly, just barely showing reluctance he had so boldly delivered in previous chapters. I knew something was wrong, but didn't want to believe it. When I write dialogue for my scripts, I always envision myself as the character speaking, including gestures, facial expressions, and tone/pitch used to create a 'realistic' voice for them. I'm not one of the writers, but they demonstrated a very transparent purpose of closing off the possibilities of character growth with just those few lines. The intention was there. It probably has been from the start. And that isn't okay.
Not when there has been, admittedly, so many scenes where it touched upon gentler, more open emotions like trust, which is supposed to be such a huge factor in this volume. It was used horribly in this chapter, as it was meant to twist Clover's words, making it seem as though Qrow was completely in the wrong when we all fucking know it's two sides of the same coin. Not one side is completely right or wrong. "I wanted to trust you too" really hit me in all the wrong places. It crushed the hope for their bond, and all for what? Dramatic flair? If that's the case, then it was a real poor stylistic choice. Qrow was spot on when he said Clover was being manipulative-- because those words, while they sounded as if they were filled with pain, were all transparent in terms of closing off any more development between them. All these lines served one purpose, and that was to stamp out whatever had been blooming underneath all their previous interactions. Very melodramatic, I've seen about a thousand of these used, and none of them ever get me to react the way the writer intended for. It just left the worst taste in my mouth. (And don't even get me started on that ending. It might've appeased whatever audience they were going for, but bluntly put I've seen commercials that delivered stronger emotional impact than that. It clearly shows even more how Clover is distanced from Qrow in that regard. The "Good luck" at the end is a call back sure but the words exchanged really just... left me feeling so empty rather than a heart full of emotions. I only started crying once I heard Qrow's anguished scream and saw the light fade from Clover's eyes.)
I've seen all the wonderful AUs and fix-it scenarios that many of you have been posting and I really appreciate all your positivity through this horrible misstep in show production. (Thank you to those who are liking and reblogging my fair game comic I made a while back.) This has hurt me so badly that I know I probably won't open up and trust shows like this for quite some time, if ever. I'm skeptical about any changes that might occur in the finale, but I'll be looking at it with cold indifference nonetheless. I'll probably take a break from the series again afterward, but will definitely continue basking in the absolute joy of the fair game community and ignoring... whatever the hell that was. (I actually have some WIPs for fics saved that I might work on and publish once I get time off work). I'm sorry for my rambling and that it might not make much sense, but I had to voice my thoughts on the situation today. It is not okay by any means, and everyone who is upset by this is valid.

The Karma Circle: Sister Dearest
Tumblr media
Welcome, children. Welcome…to the KARMA CIRCLE.
I take you to a simple town with simple people. McKeesport. A quiet town, filled with quiet people, kindly people. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city of Pittsburgh, Dibbun Membrane lives with his sister and his father, having been at long last freed from his greatest concern: an annoying alien that finally blew himself and his base up, leaving a VERY helpful and playful robot behind for Dib to play with.
And Dib looks upon this new companion as a true comfort, for his father is never, ever around when he needs him, and his sister is beastly and cruel. Dib ¬simply does not have it in him to fight back against her, for she terrifies him to the very core…
Even more so than the haunted house by Emmett's Pond. He passes it by every day on his way back from school...unaware that that which is dead does not lie still. It lies in wait. Seeking what it lost.
…and it will soon strike. For the Piper is about to be paid.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throughout the town's history, several fires tore through McKeesport. The greatest of all took place on May 21, 1976. Fire had spread from the town's most enormous department store downtown, fourteen buildings going up in a blaze. Striffler's Funeral Home, Kadar's Clothing Store, Oddo's Hobby Shop, the Coney Grill Restaurant…
And the Emmett Family home. It had been especially tragic…a young, sweet child had run out of her burning family home after the flames had spread, rushing away desperately to get help, for there were only two ways to get to town, one by the road, the other by a small lake that led to another road into town. She'd supposedly been trying to get help, for the first path was alit with flames, and had hoped to cross the lake…only to drown in the middle of the lake instead.
The poor little girl had failed her family, and legend had it that she still cannot rest. At sunset, you'll see the smoke drifting through the trees though it's been a CENTURY since she drowned…and if you're wise, you'll RUN! For that's when her ghost rises from the dark lake in which she'd drowned. She searches and searches for her baby brother, her father, her mother, but will never find them…and you had best take care she doesn't find you.
Dib believed in ghosts, of course. He was twelve years old and had seen more than most his age. He'd seen demons and spirits flying through the skies. He'd seen beings from beyond the stretches of Earth. And his new "little brother" of sorts, his best friend and confidant, was a robot with a head full of garbage, paper clips and-
"Ba-doompa-doompa-bubble gum! Ba-doompa-doompa-bubble gum! Ba-doompa-doompa-bubble gum! I'm gonna buy some bubble gum!" GIR the robot sang out, waving his tiny little robot hands in the air, his cyan eyes glittering as he bounced about the kitchen, Dib smiling a bit as he munched on his "Choco-Flakes" cereal.
There was an article in the paper about someone supposedly seeing the "Departed Soul of Emmett Lake". And, of course, it had the famous rhyme that you were meant to sing as you ran by it, the magic charm. "Departed Soul of Emmett Lake, Come not Night for Mercy's Sake! For when the sun hangs in the sky then we shall safely pass you by".
Gaz probably believed in ghosts too, deep down. But she didn't know nor would she have cared about the haunted lake. Gaz didn't care about much that didn't immediately gratify her, like a Poop Cola or "Piggy Hunter May Cry 5". It was, in a way, amazing that Gaz could be so different from their mother even though the two were almost equal in appearance to their respective parents. Dib had his father's scythe-like hair and pale skin, and both had their mother's amber/gold eyes…but Gazlene, unlike Peggy Membrane, had eyes sharp like a hawk, her arms thin and her expression usually bitter, and when she DID smile, it was a grin like stretched elastic.
She only ever really smiled when Professor Membrane was in the house. Then she'd call Dib by his actual name and would calmly smile over at Dib in a faux-friendly fashion. But once their dad had left, the smile would vanish, she'd punch or hit him somehow for taking a soda she felt belonged to her, or would, occasionally, lock Dib in the cellar for taking what she felt was a slice of HER pizza.
Not that Dib and GIR really minded being in the cellar too much. Because Dib had just decided to move a great deal of his stuff downstairs, including a Papier-mâché version of people's heads, toy soldiers…GIR liked to play with the red ones…and a Tallest Red and Purple series of puppets that GIR had made. GIR especially liked to act out the "what happened when the Tallest decided to check that odd speck in the distance out the window". The "odd speck" turning out to be a tiny black hole. Zim, watching it all from his end, had evidently been mortified. Maybe THAT'S why he hadn't been paying attention to the explosive experiment that finally did him in!
"What the hell is that? That's gotta be the weirdest thing I ever seen in my life!"
"Man what the hell IS that?"
"Say Red, think we oughta check that thing out?"
"I dunno, Pur, why not-AAAAA! AAAAAAA! AAAAAAAAAA!" GIR cried out, waving the Red and Purple puppets about in the air as Dib held up the black hole he'd made from Papier-mâché as GIR "tossed" the puppets through it. There came a loud KLOKKA-KLOK and the doorway opened up, Gaz glaring down at them.
"Shut up. You'll make me lose my concentration on Vampire Piggy Hunter X." She snapped, slamming the door shut as Dib glared up at her as she re-locked the cellar door. Good thing he'd snuck down some circus peanuts today.
"I could cut her up into little pieces and feed her to Mr. Tiddles." GIR cheerily offered, Dib frowning a bit.
"For one, Mr. Tiddles has been dead since Gaz sacrificed him to get those gummy bears that feed on human flesh." He sighed. "And TWO, I'd just get sent to prison. Everyone knows I hate her…they'd blame me for sure." He mumbled, taking his glasses off and rubbing some gunk off of the lenses.
"Can'tcha…y'know…just tell your dad she's a meany head, Mary?" GIR asked, scratching his bucket-esque head as Dib shook his head back and forth.
"Dad wouldn't believe me. She always acts reaaaal nice around him and she doesn't leave bruises on me that leave actual marks. Besides, I don't think he WANTS to believe me. He wants to believe his children get on just fine so he can just keep working at the lab." Dib insisted, shaking his head again. "She'll be back in ten minutes. Remember, look SAD." He insisted, GIR taking his lips and turning the smile into a deliberate frown. "Good. If she thinks we're having fun down here, she'll just think of a worse punishment. Probably one that'll hurt."
"Like…goin' down to the lake?" GIR mumbled out, eyes widening slightly in fear.
"Zim told you about it?" Dib asked, raising an eyebrow up in the air…and though GIR was silent…Dib could guess what the answer was.
…then came September, and Professor Membrane had to be called away to a peace conference at the United Nations. Dib, of course, had tried to beg to come with him, but Professor Membrane had just good-naturedly laughed and patted his son on his head, saying Gaz would take good care of him before heading out the door. Gaz had IMMEDIATELY barricaded Dib in his room and he'd been almost without food had he not thought to keep Premium Saltines and peanut butter cups under his bed. Why? So she could eat all the pizza and keep HIM from taking it.
"I'm wise to all your tricks." She told him calmly. "And don't complain. Whiner." She'd added, slamming the door in his face when he'd asked to use the bathroom. Good thing the window could be opened enough.
"I wonder why Memby never notices the rose bushes under your window don't ever bloom." GIR asked as Dib did his business and then closed the window, Dib sighing as he plopped down on the bed and glanced over at the calendar on the wall.
"Oh. Good! Tomorrow's Wednesday!"
Indeed. The next day was Wednesday, and that meant that Gaz was chatting it up with her friend Tak, another Irken alien just like Zim had been who'd been considerably more…calmed down…over the years. With Zim dead, what psychosis she'd had had faded a bit into just occasional coldness and vaguely British snarkiness that always manifested whenever Gaz was compelled to drag Dib along with her to Tak's house down the street to play "Grand Theft Piggy 5: New Pork City" in Co-Op. Tak and Gaz both seemed to be made of the same material…that is, a big block of granite left in the middle of a Minnesota winter.
But hey, GIR and Dib could sneak Reeses Pieces from a small glass cup that Tak kept by the living room cupboard whilst Tak and Gaz played before Tak's big screen TV and they could ignore the nasty comments the two girls would sling their way whilst carjacking little old virtual ladies.
"Honestly, my brother is SUCH a whiner." Gaz muttered. "He keeps insisting I can't take the car. That "I'm too young". I could drive it just fine."
"You ALWAYS walk here?" Tak asked.
Dib paled. Oh crap. Ohhhhhh crap.
For you see, there were two ways to get to school AND to Tak's house, which was right BY the school. One was by the hill, and the other…well…the "shortcut" by the lake. The haunted lake.
"Yeah, it's a long walk up the hill to get to the stupid school-" Gaz mumbled as GIR's mouth hung slightly open, finally processing what Gaz and Tak were about to say, his eyes becoming tiny pinpricks. Oh no. Ohhhhh no!
"Why don't you just take the shortcut through the woods? Y'know, the one that has the lake nearby?" Tak asked.
"Huh?" Gaz blinked, pausing the game and putting the controller down as she scratched the purple hair atop her head, her amber/brown eyes turning to look at GIR and Dib as her tone became quiet and dangerous. "You KNEW about a shortcut?!"
"Everyone in town knows. Lemme guess. You didn't tell her about the shortcut because you're scaaaared of da spooooky ghoooosties!" Tak said, throwing her head back and laughing hysterically, antennae flopping about as GIR clung tightly to Dib, letting out a panicked squeak. "I'm sure your sister will be happy to cure you of such a silly fancy. It's just an urban legend. Supposedly this young girl's family burned to death and SHE drowned in the lake, and should you see smoke rising from the woods, you'd best RUN! It's all so silly." She said, her voice as sweet as honey from a wasp.
"You're a bad, BAD girl! You won't make us go past the lake! Not at sunset!" GIR yelled out.
"A GHOST? Really?! You didn't tell me about this shortcut because some GHOST is supposed to haunt it?!" Gaz snapped. "Gimme a break, like I should be scared of a stupid specter." She muttered, folding her arms across her chest and shaking her head back and forth. "While I'm doing IMPORTANT things you're picking your nose, laughing on how you make me walk three miles every day just to get to school! And all cuz of some dumb urban legend! Lemme guess, a headless lumberjack'll pop outta the woods and cut my head off?!"
"I wish." Dib muttered.
Gaz IMMEDIATELY launched the wireless controller she had in her hand at him and it smacked into his forehead, a bloody cut trickling down it as he flopped to the ground, Dib glaring triumphantly up at her as he picked up his dropped-down glasses. "Now I've got a cut, a scar to show Dad when he comes back." He told her.
"Shut up or you'll get worse than that!" Gaz told him sharply, grabbing him and GIR by the wrists, dragging them out of the house, heading for the woods…heading for the lake…
As sun was beginning to set, crimson rays being cast overhead. She continued dragging them along the path, over dead leaves and fallen sticks, a long shadow being cast behind her smallish frame, the setting sun glowing almost as brightly as her hateful eyes, the dark pond slowly coming into sight off in the distance.
"Maybe she's a witch?" GIR whispered to Dib. "You think she's a witch?"
"Shhh!" Dib hissed back. The charm. The magic charm. "Departed Soul of Emmett Lake, Come not Night for Mercy's Sake! For when the sun hangs in the sky-"
"What're you two whispering about?" Gaz snapped out.
"Nothing!" Dib said quickly, gulping a bit as the wind began to wrap itself around him, digging its claws into him.
It was no good. The charm only worked during the DAY, when the sun was up and now the sun had fallen past the gnarled and now-barren trees, the sky looking like it was lit up with burning flames as…as pale wisps of smoke came curling and creeping under the ground, like blind fingers searching…
"The smoke. The SMOKE!" Dib whispered out, eyes widening in horror. "The smoke from the burning house! It was there!
"Are you kidding me?" Gaz groaned, rolling her eyes. "Seriously? Smoke?!" She muttered, dragging them towards the lake, GIR trying to break free in desperation before Gaz tossed him away, shoving her brother towards the lake, sticking his head down towards it, shaking him a bit. "LOOK!" She yelled out. "There's nothing there at all! It's just mist rising off the water!"
She was looking at Dib when she spoke…and did not see what was rising out of the reeds nearby, making it's way towards her as she glared back at GIR, who was gasping in horror at what drew ever-closer. Something dark and wet and tiny, a figure made of rotted-away flesh and water and reeds. Greenish/brown muck clung to the decayed flesh and slightly-cracked bones, a frog stuck in one eye, calmly breathing and staring back from the empty socket. Its eyes were silver like the scales of a fish, it's mouth turning from a slight smile to a furious, baleful glare as it saw Gaz shake Dib again, threatening to drop him in the lake as she yelled at GIR.
"WELL?! You cowards, I can't believe you're scared of some stupid girly ghost, there's nothing-"
The ghost GRABBED her, Dib breaking free and scrambling back as Gaz and the figure went into the lake an instant later, dark water frothing about as the two figures struggled, snarls and screams filling the air, Gaz and the figure sinking down in a boil of bubbles.
"G-g-g-g-g-GHOST!" GIR screamed out, Dib and GIR immediately racing off down the path, heading for home as fast as their legs could carry them, but GIR's leg had been injured when Gaz had thrown him, and there was a KRAKKA-KRKK sound as he fell to the forest floor, letting out a yelp. Dib quickly knelt down by him, trying to help GIR up as they heard the bushes and bramble being pushed aside, the two rooted to the spot in sheer terror, white nests of toadstools around them as they clung together in fear…
And then Gaz burst through the bushes, looking…oddly nice. She'd evidently run so fast her clothes had dried on her body, and her cheeks now had a bit of a blush to them, her hair now falling around her head almost like a halo as she blinked a bit at the sight of the two.
"Are you alright, guys?" She asked.
…GUYS?!
"That was an awful stumble, huh? Oh and look at you, Dib, you're shivering!"
DIB?! Calling him DIB and not "Hey, you"?
"Lemme give you a piggyback ride, GIR." She offered, helping GIR onto her back and cheerily smiling at Dib. "I think there's some pizza left over I can heat up at home, okay?" She asked Dib as she calmly walked off down the path, whistling.
WHISTLING!
"Who are you and what have you done with Gaz?" Dib muttered a bit, walking alongside her, scratching his head in surprise.
…true to her word, Gaz heated up the leftover pizza in the microwave and poured them all some Poop Cola, breaking out the big, fizzy straws from the cupboard, smiling as she watched them eat, staying silent before heading to her own room, Dib and GIR going back up to Dib's room, the two sitting on Dib's bed as Dib nervously chewed on his lip, glancing over at GIR.
"Did…did that just happen?" GIR asked. "She's all…y'know. Cheery."
"Yeah, it's weird." Dib murmured, scratching his head in confusion. "But…you saw it, right? At the lake?"
"Yes. And she fell in, right?" GIR wanted to know. "I don't get it, why…why's she being so nice? It's weird, Mary. Really weird. She's so different!"
"I thought she'd be dead, but…" Dib trailed off. "…I hope dad comes back soon." He finally sighed. "Hopefully things'll be back to normal soon."
And so the two went to sleep, GIR plopping down in the corner underneath a poster of the X-Files whilst Dib laid back in his bed, listening to Gaz walk about downstairs, slowly and uncertainly, as if she'd lost her way.
Within a few days though, it became clear Gaz had changed since falling into the lake, as if all the unpleasantness had been washed right out of her. The house was now bright and cheerful, Gaz now happily sharing her pizza and soda with the two and never raising her voice. She let Dib play with her Game Slave and even Tak didn't seem to mind this new Gaz as much, because this new one was far more cooperative in co-op. She doodled with Dib during the evening, chatted with him as they looked at old corny B-movies on the TV. And above all, she never ever hit them or yelled at them anymore!
Dib and GIR started calling her "Gazzy", and Dib would stargaze with her on the roof of their house at night, looking up silently at the stars, resting one hand atop hers as they contemplated the majesty beyond.
"Dad's gonna be home tomorrow." Dib said one night. "You remember, right?"
"Yes, Matthew."
"It's just "Dad", really."
"Alright. Dad."
"…how long will you be staying?" Dib wanted to know, tilting his head slightly to the side as Gaz rubbed her chin and raised an eyebrow up.
"However long would you want me here?" She wanted to ask. "If…if you wouldn't mind, could…" She began to say before Dib smiled, patting her on the shoulder.
"I want you to stay with us." Dib insisted. "Okay?"
"…I'd like that." She admitted with a smile, wrapping her arms around her brother and hugging him tightly. "Thank you, Dib." She said, a single tear trickling down her cheek and onto the roof below.
… it was about two years before Dib made his way back to Emmett's Lake, going in broad daylight on a sunny Saturday in June, down the winding forest path to the dark lake where tragedy had struck o'er a century ago. The lake was peaceful now, tiny little tadpoles flittering about as butterflies flew overhead. He calmly sat at the end of the lake, on a tree stump as a water boatman skittered across the lake, leaving behind a small silver wake as Dib waited.
Sure enough, a few bubbles began to rise up to disturb the surface of the quiet water, small fish darting away as a scum of mud and filthy rose up slowly from the bottom of the lake, taking the vague shape of someone all-too-familiar who was scowling angrily.
"Dib, gemme out! She took my body that stupid little bitch! Look, if you bring her down here, I'll give you fifty bucks! I'll bring you chocolate every day to your room for breakfast, I'll-I'll wash your feet and never yell at you again, I promise, I-"
"Goodbye, Gaz." Dib firmly remarked, sitting up and walking away.
And that was the last time Dib ever walked by the lake ever again.

Oh man, so Ster and I found the coolest thing.
So we were driving around to look at the lights like we do, and we went by this one house toward the end. Last year we could see that they had a Santa taking photos, and we figured they must be having their Christmas party and had something special for the guests' kids.
Nope. Better. We actually decided to get down and check it out and it turns out that actually? The people who live there just love Christmas.
So the week before, they set up this whole wonderland around their house--little paths leading to different photo ops with polar bears and reindeer statues...and a path leading to Santa and Mrs. Claus taking pictures with anyone who comes by. In the back yard they have a multi-level deck with a little dance floor (and a DJ playing Christmas songs for the kids to dance to), popcorn and hot cocoa, an alcove with face painting and another with yard games like cornhole and ring toss, all manned by "elves."
It's just...there. For anyone who drops by.
So Ster and I got pictures with Santa. And it's such a nicer set-up than any mall Santa I've ever seen. I'm willing to bet they have fewer terrified children, because while there's a lot of Christmas, it's also less overwhelming (it's less bright, it's in a relatively quiet, normal-looking neighborhood, there's not the hemmed in thing you get in a lot of mall set-ups). Also, there's a bench between Santa and Mrs. Claus, so, y'know. No having to sit your kid on a stranger's lap.
And they were just charming and very in character. Didn't let us just snap a picture and go. Chatted and asked us what we wanted for Christmas. Ster said Legos and I said new skate laces (something about Santa...you feel weird saying something like a phone or a knife block or Adult Things), and he talked about how he remembered when Legos first came out, and how important it is to have fun, even "childish" things to enjoy even as an adult. It was just charming.
After that, we went into "Rudolph's Clubhouse" (the backyard with the dance floor) and walked around. We had gotten there right at the tale end of things, so after a couple songs, Santa and Mrs Claus came in and danced with the kids, then led everyone in a singalong of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (even Sterling sang along and he never sinces) and it was just all adorable.
I'm really just genuinely amazed. When we left we decided we were done for the evening because nothing would top that. It's just...such a really pure expression of kindness and generosity. These folks just open a good portion of their home to any stranger coming by and welcome them. They provide a whole experience and ask for literally nothing. As far as I can see, there's no way to pay them back, and they probably like it that way. Parents who might not be able to do much for the holiday can still fake their kids to this place and give them a really magical time, with fun stuff that usually costs kind of a lot of money.
I just think that's wonderful. One of the elves said she'd gotten recruited this year and I should have asked her how, because I would definitely volunteer next year.
Just...I dunno, something about people who realize they can do something extravagant and kind for other people, for complete strangers...so they do. It's the best Christmas thing I've seen in a long while.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this year.

This YouTube comment smells like flop sweat, pancake makeup, and desperation. It was posted in the middle of the night on a video titled “Will the Intellivision Amico Fail?” Pasted verbatim.
Tommy Tallarico 22 hours ago (edited) Hi! Thanks for talking about Amico. Y'know if you mention my name 3 times on YouTube I appear. :)
You guys had a lot of great questions. And although you all had doubts (understandable) you were very respectful in your dialogue. I appreciate it. Would love to talk to you and your crew about it if you'd like. Please feel free to ask me any tough questions.
A few things I'd like to mention regarding some of the things that were said.
We do have physical media (you had mentioned we didn't).
You nailed it when you said this isn't for hardcore gamers. I think this is the biggest disconnect between the comments everyone was making. We are not in any way trying to compete with Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo. Our market is completely different from them. You can't look at it and compare it to any of those. It's not really for them initially.
In regards to the controllers... I wish you would have played more of our last 2 videos which featured why the controllers are so unique and how they are used in very different ways.
We have an AMAZING developer program. Would love to explain it to you guys and why hundreds of developers have signed up and why we have about 100 companies making games for us right now.
Yes. Every game is exclusive and curated and high quality. No shovelware.
The bean bag throwing game is called Cornhole and is the biggest growing sport in the United States and even beats things like Wimbleton on TV.
I think some of the comments about the games were too focused on game graphics. We all know that graphics aren't the most important thing in a game. It's all about simple and fun gameplay. That's what we're all about. Amazing gameplay and all games are couch co-op.
We have a TON of stuff in the pipeline that we haven't mentioned yet.
The initial launch price was unfortunately determined because of Coronavirus. The goal is to get the console under $199 by the end of 2021. Keep in mind however... Amico comes with 6 games, 2 controllers (first machine since the SNES that comes with 2 controllers!) and the ability to connect up to 8 mobile phones to the system as well (for free) and all games are $9.99 or less. So when you were comparing to the Switch you weren't including MULTIPLE Switches to play couch co-op games or multiple controllers.
We have about 30 games on launch and again it comes with 6 premium pack-ins!
We definitely have 5 Earthworm Jim type big licenses in the works!
We are scheduled to have 1 new game come out every 10 - 14 days.
No one needs to worry about servers being shut off. Once you download a game it stays on the machine forever.
We haven't even started our marketing yet. It's not coming out until October so it won't start until the end of this summer.
Rich ReviewTechUSA hasn't crapped on it because he's spoken to me about it and knows what the plan for the system is. JT Smash loves it as well (because he's played it). He initially had concerns... but then after speaking with me and playing the machine... he quickly changed his mind and now is very positive. Would love to talk to you guys about it as well to explain more.
There is NO subscription model so don't worry about that.
We actually have new Earthworm Jim animation on our YouTube channel. :)
None of the games are being developed in house actually. Only the TOP developers in the world... handpicked by us.
Pre-Orders are already live in the UK!! It's an absolutely worldwide release! You can get it now. It sad that you guys were turned off at the end because you didn't think it was available worldwide. :(
Thanks again for discussing it.... let's please do an interview ASAP so I can fill you in on a lot of things that weren't discussed including who are target market is. And again... PLEASE feel free to ask me the toughest questions you'd like. I welcome it.
Please leave me a message here if you're interested or contact me PM on Twittter.
Thanks guys!

Every whole number x when f(x)=sin(x^0.75), such that f(x) is decreasing
…okay, I put that equation into Wolfram Alpha, but the graphs it shows you by default are extraordinarily hard to read, and you can’t get any further detail without signing up for a Pro (i.e. paid) account, soooooo…. I’m just gonna answer all of them! Hope that’s okay! ^^;;;
1. First console you’ve ever owned?‘Twas the original NES. I was so happy when my parents bought it (although tbh my dad bought it as much for himself as for me). I spent so many hours playing the SMB games… ahh, good times.
3. Favorite childhood game?Hmmm, probably Super Mario Bros. 3. That was the one I spent the longest playing, anyway. My mom even went to the trouble to borrow the strategy guide from the library, photocopy the whole thing, and bind it together into a book for me. My mom was the best. ;_;
4. Longest consecutive hours you’ve played a game?Whew, uhhh, not as long as some people, I’m sure. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than 8 hours straight playing games. I’m certainly no match for the likes of Neptune and Vert, that’s for sure. ^^;;;
5. Game with the best soundtrack?I actually really really like the soundtrack from the first Hyperdimension Neptunia game. A lot of those songs just get stuck in my head, y'know? Especially Nepgear’s theme. :3
6. An underrated game from within the last few years?Hmm, gonna go with Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. It apparently only got a 64/100 on Metacritic, which is WAY too low for how fun this game is.
7. Most disappointing game you’ve played?Honestly? Most of the Jak and Daxter series. I really really wanted to like those games, but I just… couldn’t. There was just something about them that really turned me off. I enjoy other, similar games, so I don’t know what it was. I got all of them for super cheap (like probably $5 each) so it’s not like I spent a bunch of money on them, but I still felt ripped off, y'know?
8. The game with the best atmosphere/scenery?The Metroid Prime games, for me, had some of the best settings. Nicely-rendered and completely appropriate for the feel of the game. If you’ve never played any of the MP games, please do so. If you can play the Wii controls versions, so much the better (it’s playable with the Gamecube controller but once you use the Wiimote to aim Samus’s gun you’ll never go back).
10. Prefer PC or console?Based solely on the number of games amassed, PC wins out, but I honestly don’t prefer one over the other.
11. Have you written any fanfic or made any fanart?…not of video games, no.
12. Most bizarre game you’ve ever played? It’s pretty tame, but probablyyyyyy…. Goat Simulator. Like, what the fuck even is this game.
13. Scariest game you’ve played?Well, I haven’t actually played it yet, but the scariest game I currently own is probably Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion.
14. Do you watch playthroughs online? Not really, no.
15. Favorite animal in a video game? This is kind of an odd question… I’m gonna have to go with Gex the gecko, particularly from the second game. I loved that game so much.
16. The best year in gaming you’ve experienced?Literally every year seems better than the last, so I can’t really answer this question. This year has been pretty amazing so far, but then, I’ve said that about every other year past, so… ^^;;;
17. Have a video game themed background or lockscreen?LOL of course I do! My desktop wallpaper is Neptune and Nepgear, and my phone’s lock screen and home screen are both pics of Purple Heart.
18. Worst game you’ve played?Ooh, interesting question. I don’t really know if I can answer this properly? One of the games that stands out to me is called Sparkle 2 Evo. The graphics were nice but the controls were awful and it was nearly unplayable. The devs might have patched it since, but I kinda lost interest in it so I don’t really care at this point.
19. Hardest game you’ve ever played? The hardest game I’ve seriously played is probably VVVVVV. Fuck that game. >:(
20. Favorite publisher and/or developer? If I don’t say Idea Factory (and/or Compile Heart) I’ll feel like I’m betraying my beloved Neptune, so I’ll go with them.
21. If you had to play one game for the rest of your life, what would it be?I don’t know if this really counts as a video game, but I’m gonna have to say Mamono Sweeper.
22. If you could turn one game into movie, which would it be?The first game that sprang to mind was Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It was such a cool game, I’d love to see a cinematic version of it (also can you IMAGINE Samus on the big screen? EEEEEEEEEEEEEE).
24. Ever cried because of a video game? Which one(s)?Oh, probably! I know SMB3 made me cry when I was little because there was one level I just couldn’t beat no matter how many times I tried it. I forget which level it was now, lol.
25. Proudest accomplishment in gaming?Hmmm, probably the time I finally actually beat Indalecio in Star Ocean 2, when you do the event where his power limiter is removed and he basically becomes a god. Fuck me sideways, that was an insane fight.
26. How often do you play online? Co-op?Almost never! The last game I played co-op was MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune Vs. Zombies (I played with @aboutthreeneps), but I really don’t do online gaming much.
27. Have you gotten any friends into gaming?Maybe? Most people I’m friends with are either already into gaming, or else they’re not interested, so…. probably not.
28. Who got YOU into gaming?Hmm, I guess it was my dad. I watched him play a bunch of games when I was a small child and was like “THAT LOOKS SO COOL I WANNA DO IT TOO”.
29. Watch cutscenes or skip them?I usually watch them, unless it’s one I’ve seen a bunch of times (or one you can’t skip… damn unskippable cutscenes).
30. On average, how long does it take you in the character creation screen?…quite a while. It depends on the game, I guess. When I made a new character in Stardew Valley today, I spent between 5-10 minutes, but when I was creating a character in Saints Row IV, I probably spent close to an hour tweaking every little variable to get it just right.
32. Do you cosplay? Not really, although I did cosplay as Squall from Final Fantasy 8 one time. I still have the gunblade sitting around somewhere.
33. Favorite female npc?34. Favorite male npc? These two questions are really hard for me to answer! Mostly because I find games fall into either one of two categories: ones where the NPCs are faceless and forgettable, and ones where the NPCs are extremely well-done and I love all of them.
35. Best protagonist?Neptune, duh.
36. Best antagonist?I like GLaDOS from Portal.
37. Ever been made fun of for playing video games?Hmm, I don’t think so.
38. Have you tried a game, hated it, then tried again, and loved it?Again, I don’t think so? There’s been plenty of games where I’ve been like “meh” at first and then “OMG THIS GAME IS AWESOME” later, but I don’t think there’s any I really hated that I went back and liked later.
39. Do you play for achievements/trophies?Not explicitly, or at least, not at first. I tend to play through the story of a game first, and then on my second playthrough I’ll try to get most of the achievements.
40. Favorite voice actor?A new favourite, but a favourite nonetheless: Megan Hollingshead.
41. Gone to a midnight release before?Nope! Any of the games I’ve been excited for either never had this sort of event, or else they did but I just got on the bandwagon too late. I’m incredibly behind the times when it comes to keeping up with this sort of thing. T_T
42. A game you will never forget (in a bad OR good way)?Star Ocean 2. That game will stay with me forever. In a good way. :3
43. Favorite sidekick or companion?Ooh, good one! I really liked Eryn from Fairy Fencer F. She’s such a sweetie, and Fang treats her like garbage for most of the game, so I think I was especially drawn to her because he wasn’t.
44. Do graphics matter? They have to be done well, and the style has to fit with the overall style of the game. Other than that, I don’t care. A game isn’t instantly better by having more realistic graphics or whatever, I don’t care.
45. Do you like funny or more serious games?I tend to like more funny games, overall.
46. Always, sometimes, or never use subtitles?Sometimes. It really depends on the game.
47. First person or Third person? Both??? How is this even a question lmao
48. A game you’ve always wanted to play but have never gotten to it?Bastion. I watched a friend play some of it and it looked super cool, and I own it, I’ve just never played it for some reason.
49. A game you haven’t played in forever, but want to replay?Hmm, I kind of want to play Cave Story again. I love that game
50. How many games to do you own?I currently have 186 games in my Steam inventory, and counting the various consoles I own it’s probably at least 250.
51. First character you’ve had a crush on?I can’t really think of any right now! I did kind of have a crush on Princess Toadstool in Super Mario RPG, I guess that’s the earliest character I can remember.
52. A game you will always stand behind, and support no matter what? All of the Hyperdimension Neptunia games. I own all 4 of the main series games (Re;Birth 1-3 and VII) and 4 of the spinoff games (Nep U, Hyperdevotion Noire, MegaTagmension, and PP), and I’ve bought more Neptunia merchandise than I have for any other game series.
53. Your most immersive game? Most of the Pokemon games, for me, have been pretty immersive. Like, I take it upon myself to learn everything about them, I keep written notes on lots of stuff, I actively plan out my strategies in advance, etc.
54. A sequel you really want?Hmm, can’t think of too many. Most of my favourite games are series anyway, so they already have sequels. :P
55. How much time, on average, do you play in a week?Hard to say, some weeks I barely play at all, some weeks that’s all I do. I’d say on average, like taking the arithmetic mean, it’d be around an hour a day.
56. Do you tell people irl that you play video games?Oh, for sure. There’s not really a stigma around it anymore since everyone plays video games these days (the whole notion of “gamers are over” and all that).
57. What is an overrated game you’ve played?Basically every MMO I’ve ever played. I just don’t get the appeal.
58. Ever have someone walk in on a sex scene between you and you LI?I’m going to assume that “LI” stands for “love interest,” like as in the love interest of the main character of a game, otherwise this question makes no sense (even as is it doesn’t make much sense). No, this has never happened. I can’t recall any games I’ve ever played that have had explicit sex scenes. Other than, like… HuniePop or something, but even that’s not really explicit, it’s mostly just moaning. (Unless they released some super-X-rated update or something, I haven’t touched that game in a loooooooong time.)
59. A game you are looking forward to this year?
FOURGODDESSESONLINE
61. A game you know everything about?Star Ocean: The Second Story. I know that game like the back of my hand. I could probably play it blindfolded.
62. Would you want to work with video games when you are older?I want to work with video games now! I *AM* older, dammit! (Especially after watching all of New Game!, I really wanna work for a development studio. I don’t even care doing what, I just wanna be in the industry!)
63. What’s a game that has inspired you?Hmm, I can’t really think of any games that have “inspired” me. Like, in what way? I don’t know.
64. Describe your favorite video game using only three words?Neptune = best girl. (I don’t know if an equals sign counts as a word, if so you can take it out and my point still stands.)
65. Any favorite screenshots of games?I’ve posted a few on my tumblr, mostly from Nep games.
66. Game with the yummiest looking food?Uhhhh…. hmmm. I mean, Portal had that delicious-looking cake. Stardew Valley has some decent food too.
67. Most violent game you’ve played?Honestly, probably One Finger Death Punch. Being that the entire point of the game is slaughtering hundreds of enemies with either your fists or whatever weapons you happen to find lying around. I mean, it’s all stickmen, but still.
68. An older game that you’ve just recently gotten into?I honestly can’t think of any! The oldest game I’ve gotten into *recently* is the aforementioned Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed, but that came out in 2014, so I don’t know if it’s old enough for the purposes of this response.
69. Your first LI?…not quite sure what this means. Love interest? Like, first character from a game I fell in love with? First game I played where the main character had a love interest? I honestly don’t know how to answer this one.
70. Do you play any mobile games?A few. Not counting portable consoles (i.e. the 3DS or PS Vita), I have a handful of games on my phone (Sailor Moon Drops, Monument Valley, Mushihimesama, I even have Carmageddon on my phone (yes, they released an iOS port of that game somehow)).
71. A game you can’t stop talking/thinking about at the moment?Well I did just pick up Stardew Valley again, so I’m probably gonna be thinking about that for a while. Same with that Neptunia idol game, I just started playing that and it’s super fun.
72. Have any guilty pleasure games?Of course not, why do you ask?
73. A game with the best fandom?Overall, my experience has been that Neptunia fans are all pretty awesome. :D
74. Which game has the best lore?I actually love the lore from the Metroid series. The whole history with Samus and the Chozo is so interesting to me.
75. Do you focus on main storyline/quest or do sidequests first?I do both! I’ll play the main storyline until either (1) I need to grind more because the enemies/bosses are getting stronger, (2) I need to get better equipment and need either materials for crafting, or money for buying stuff, or (3) the main story is in a lull and I get an interesting side quest. Usually once I go off on a sidequest tangent, I don’t come back for a good long while (to the point where I’ll stop playing the game for a while and then when I come back to it I’m like “ok wtf was I supposed to be doing? I don’t remember, maybe I’ll just start over again lol”).
These were fun questions, thanks for asking! ^_^

As Darkness Falls, Shield Hero Fans Unite Behind Their Hero
If you haven't watched this week's episode of The Rising of the Shield Hero, please shield your eyes from these spoilers!
  **SPOILERS AHEAD**
We start off this week's episode with the Queen herself taking some action; if this is a crisis that affects the whole world over, who is she to just sit by the sidelines? She declares to her fleet that they'll put down that traitorous pope and his followers. We stan this FIERCE QUEEN! But will she and her fleet make it in time to help Naofumi and the others?
One by one, our heroes fire their attacks on the pope, without much of an effect on him...
Sure, the Pope's followers have the ability to heal him if he should take damage, but how long could they keep that going? Mana supply isn't infinite, and it could run out real quick if the followers were to keep that Cathedral up in the midst of healing.
Naofumi launched an impressive curse attack on the Pope... but it didn't work on on him?! What gives! The Pope smugly tells Naofumi that "this is hallowed ground blessed by God." So it looks like while being imprisoned in the Cathedral, effects like curses don't work at all. The Cathedral is not broken or overpowered at all, right?!
After all that boasting and show of power, a third of the Pope's followers fall after having their mana taken. Finally, a chance to strike! But even with their firepower diminished, the Pope still demands that sweet mana to keep up his "strength", even though it may come at the cost of his precious believers lives. You'd think some of them would... y'know... wake up and just walk out, but nope. They'll really sacrifice their lives under the guise of slaying an enemy of God.
The three stooges (Spear, Sword and Bow Heroes) look to Naofumi to "do something about it." Excuse you guys??? They go on saying that even though Naofumi is a lower level than them, that his Shield is overpowered and can totally just make this huge problem disappear. Yeah, sure, he'll get right on that!
Fitoria's warning of to not use the Shield of the Curse Series flashes in Naofumi's mind... And what does he do?
He freakin' USES IT!!! You've been warned, son!
Naofumi is sweet talked to let his anger run rampant and consume everything on his path. This power he used previously... it fit like a glove, right? There couldn't be anything wrong with ignoring a warning and using it again, right? RIGHT?
Before he launches his chaotic attacks, voices of his trusted companions reach him... Raphtlia, Filo and Melty detail on what this journey they've undertaken together meant to them. What they've learned, gained, and the trust they have for one another... what makes them the best team! The three of them manage to get Naofumi to snap out of it and they all share a very tender moment. Shield Team definitely is the BEST TEAM for sure!
The Pope redies his next attack as he continues to be a pompous jerk to Naofumi, but it's not without a final warning from Naofumi himself: grand power always comes at a price, and if that power is at the cost of his believers, then he's a bit short to pay up!
The show's first theme song plays as Naofumi and crew lay on the smackdown, and it just really makes for a hype moment; doesn't that song get you all fired up?! Also, that transition from Filo's attack to Raphtalia's attack looks SICK!
Enough is enough, and the Pope unleashes an illusion attack that is unpleasant to look at and isn't broken AT ALL. Looks like our crew is out of luck and all hope is lost...
...Until our FIERCE QUEEN comes in with the most flamboyant way to cast an Ice Prison spell! This is the chance we've been waiting for! The Pope is stopped in his tracks! The time for dealing the killing blow is NOW...!
...Whoops, that didn't go as planned. Naofumi bleeds an insane amount as his finisher backfires on him... or does it...?
In the end, the Pope gets what's coming to him as sweet justice reigns supreme! However, it looks like it was at the cost of Naofumi almost dying. He hangs on life's very thin thread as Raphtalia, Filo and Melty try to get him to stay awake and not succumb to death.
The Queen declares she will not let the Shield Hero die. Will she be able to heal him? Will our hero survive having lost that much blood? What now after the Pope's attack? Comment below and leave your predictions as we wait for next week's episode!
And now it's our favorite time of the week: checking out YOUR reactions to this week's intense episode! Let's see what y'all thought this time around!
