I did not know I needed a MV of Xiao Qi and Awu, the period power couple of my dreams, set to Queen’s I Was Born to Love You but here we are and I am grinning ear to ear.

Nobody does it like the couple that displaced Minglan X Tingye from The Story of Minglan as my favorite cdrama OTP of all time (sorry Minglan and Tingye, I still love you, you have just moved to silver. one of the things that i’ve really enjoyed about (a lot of) kdramas and cdramas, especially ones like rebel princess, is how fucking good they are at showing intimacy without showing sex.

like once xiao qi and a’wu are in ningshuo, they start to touch each other and hold hands and just look at each other and shit and i’m like “i have to go lie down for 45 minutes.”

you see them being cute and playful and it feels/looks like an actual relationship between two people who care about each other

look at them!!!! i can’t! it’s too much!

the most you ever see is them kissing but you’ll watch them holding hands while they walk around in their own house and it’s the best.

(there’s a whole side post about how the inclusion of sex in american cable shows has led to that basically becoming a requirement of tv in a way that is just...not good, but i don’t want to do that right now, i just want to look at these two looking at each other.)

Okay. New Face is quite entertaining. Zhou Yi Wei is gorgeous. It’s fun to see him in modern clothes. But. It’s not Rebel Princess/Monarch Industry, Awu and Xiao Qi are the OTP of all OTPs. Their love and care for each other is just so moving. This scene, where Xiao Qi tells Awu that he’d rather have her than have children is so incredibly moving. I am in awe.

It’s just so refreshing to watch since I feel many shows build their “romantic” couples on pain and anxiety. On dark pasts and so on.

And here while Awu and Qiao Xi were a marriage of convenience first it was lovely to see them grow as a team and then as people who are in love.

I might rewatch the drama if I find time.
