When the gate opened, it bloomed like a flower. Empty space was suddenly anything but, alive with energy that unfurled from a pinpoint and spread to stain the blackness with brilliant light. It was a riot of color; azure shading to bruiselike gold and bronze, then spilling over into purple and the ultraviolet-and-beyond that Wu Xie’s helmet told him was there, so bright that the automatic faceplate shading began to shield his view. He gave an impatient override and the spreading shadow leached away: nothing to come between him and what he had come so far to see. The wealthiest in the galaxy would have paid a planet’s value for this sight, but Wu Xie was looking, not at the wormhole, but for what he could see against it, dwarfed by the vastness of the riotous display. The moments stretched eternal: one heartbeat. Two.
Sleek and graceful, delicate and deadly, through the iris of the gate flowed the most beautiful starship in the universe.
Author’s commentary (minor fic spoilers):
Ahhh, the everlasting aroace dilemma: do you want to bond with the sentient spaceship, or you do want to be the sentient spaceship?
This idea came together from @thelaithlyworm‘s prompts in this and previous fic exchanges, and once it had bitten me it would not let go. I’ve always adored stories about sentient spaceships and their bonds with others, so this is strongly influenced by many different fictional universes even though it is not strictly based on any one of them. There’s just something about the vast differences of scale and time and experience and personality still finding a meeting point that is intensely important to those involved that parallels oddly well to the PingXie dynamic.
As always, one of the most fun things about an AU is translating canon events and characters to a new universe. Jumping back and forth between timelines can be a little jarring, but it’s an effective narrative way to cherrypick just the bits you want to play with! I was especially surprised - in a good but melancholy sort of way - how well A Ning’s fate tied in. Wreck-diving for tomb-raiding as such a natural substitution, and the adventures-in-translation snippet was just too fun to toss in there. I’m afraid that I wasn’t able to come up with a solid story for the overall Why of the whole bronze gate plotline before I REALLLLY had to finish this up for the deadline, so I had to settle for NPSS style mysteriousness and hope it doesn’t show too badly.
I especially loved sneaking Hei Xiazi in as a junk-heap of a starship that should never have been sentient in the first place. While Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling’s relationship in this verse may be purely a meeting of minds and souls, we do not want to talk about the hinky stuff that Hei Xiazi and Xiao Hua get up to.
The auction scene may or may not have been somewhat inspired by the end of Galaxy Quest. I’m not telling.

I think the reason most of my DMBJ fics are set during or post Lost Tomb Reboot is that there’s something appealing about characters who have been through hell together and come out the other side.
By the time we get to Reboot the Iron Triangle is so solid that none of the drama comes from within. Even when Pangzi finds out Wu Xie has been hiding his illness they don’t fight about it. Pangzi aggressively feeds Wu Xie soup, bundles him in a blanket, makes sure he takes his medication and Wu Xie lets him. Xiaoge spends the entire time doing whatever he can to save Wu Xie.
The scene where Pangzi and Xiaoge go blind and Wu Xie needs to lead them through a tomb is a perfect example of how much they love and trust each other.
Sometimes you just want to write stories where the getting together and settling into the relationship aren’t the focus. It’s three men who love each other living happy in domesticity, who sometimes go tomb raiding and fight monsters.

Two random DMBJ headcanons that may or may not be related:
Xiaoge is afraid of flying. He never sets foot in airplanes and takes trains/ cars/ boats or hitchhikes wherever he needs to go.
Hei Xiazi has a flying license from like, 1942, but can figure out how to operate most machines. He even once stole Xiao Hua's brand new jet and managed to land it safely back after a little joyride.
The former might be due to the latter 🤷♀️

Okay okay okay okay so I’m watching Mortal Kombat (2021) and legit Liu Kang called Kung Lao ‘Shixiong’ but the subtitles were like, ‘cousin’? Errr…
Unless all of my years watching Wuxia and Xianxia has been for naught, I am 110% and a lot of change sure that ‘Shixiong’ is NOT cousin and is more in line with ‘Elder Martial Brother’ which is what you call a fellow elder male student under the same martial arts teacher.

Zishu ignores the menace he married loitering on the bed as best he can. It goes as well as snow holding up against the heat of the summer sun, so it isn't long until Zishu gives up the ghost and viciously lobs a balled up wad of cloth in the direction of their wedding bed.
"Ah Xu, you wound me!" Comes the laughing drawl from the red tinged shadows. Zishu frowns, flicking out his sleeves before turning around to regard Wen Kexing, the Lord of the Ghost Valley himself, with a sharp-edged word ready on his tongue.
Only to find the annoyance in him clinging on to desperate embers at the sight of his new husband lazily throwing back his hair over a naked shoulder. Zishu's throat runs more than a little dry at the way Wen Kexing angles his body, showing off the way the gauzy fabric of his robe drapes over the pale swaths of skin illuminated a hazy red.
"What's wrong, my lord husband? Cat got your tongue? Or would you rather talk about last night instead?"
That brings whatever warmth coiling in his belly to cool and settle.
"Last night," Zishu says with a thick swallow. "Was a fluke and will not happen again."
This marriage is nothing but a sham - something to fool the other Ghosts that their mad leader is doing something insane again, therefore whoever was running an attempt to betray the Valley will attempt to strike again while Wen Kexing was on his 9-day honeymoon.
And therefore, Zishu was enlisted for this little mission.
The Window of Heaven was the only one with the connections to bridge the need between the Valley and the interests of the world at large. A delicate diplomatic balance was needed for a task like this. Letting anyone else but himself as Leader of the Window of Heaven handle a task as big as this would be gravely remiss of him.
It was only meant to be a farce, yet somehow, some where in between them making the deal with each other, it had turned into a true mile of wedding red instead.
"Oh?" Wen Kexing purrs. Soft laughter floats up in the silence and Zishu turns to him again, watching as his husband pulls himself upright, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "Was the fluke when you kissed me or when you had your cock down my throat?"
The teasing in his voice is clear. Zishu huffs impatiently, standing up when Wen Kexing speaks again, this time the words coming slowly as he closes the distance between them.
"Or was it when you had mine down yours?"
"That..."
Wen Kexing slides his hand into his own, pulling him back towards the bed. "How about we find out all the other different flukes we can get into, hm?"
Zishu coughs.
And only stops once to pull the curtains over their bed close as he goes.

Tomorrow it would be the first day of Qingming, and they would travel up the hillside to sweep the hidden graves and clear their stones of brush. A’Xiang and her silly husband. Xiao-Chengling and his wife.
As they walked, Wen Kexing stopped to pluck a pink blossoming azalea from a flowering bush and wove it into his hair. He turned to face Zhou Zishu, batting his eyelashes furiously like the men who acted women's roles in the comic dramas that were so popular these days. "I'm as beautiful as any maiden in town—won't the dashing Lord Zhou spare me a glance?"
"Maybe if you truly were a maiden instead of playing at one, he would," said Zhou Zishu.
Pink really did suit Lao Wen; his cheeks were bright with color. Zhou Zishu plucked another blossom and tucked it behind Wen Kexing’s ear. Wen Kexing smiled coyly and hid his mouth behind his fan. "Lord Zhou is so forward with his affections. This wife wonders if he offers such treasures to every pretty thing that crosses his path."
"So Lao Wen is my wife, now? No wonder he did not seem so maidenly."
Wen Kexing lowered his fan and stepped into Zhou Zishu's space. He caught Zhou Zishu’s hand and kissed it.
“A’Xu ah," he said, voice low and sweet like the dregs of pear blossom wine under a full spring moon. "Wife or maiden or no, I'm yours for as long as you'll have me."
“Keep me company as we walk, then, and we’ll see about what happens after.”
They went along the slope for a while before sitting down in a patch of grass. Bright petals stippled the hills like an artist’s brush with pinks and whites and creams.
“The flowers bloom every year whether there’s someone to look at them or no,” said Wen Kexing, hand warm over Zhou Zishu’s in the grass. “That sort of carefree life must be nice.”
Zhou Zishu watched the clouds swirl by, following invisible drifts and eddies. “Flowers don’t bloom to be looked at; they bloom to survive.”
“And yet they’re pleasing to the eye regardless. How absurd!”
"Isn't that what you thought of me when we first met? That I was a flower that cared not for my own loveliness? Lao Wen, are you calling me absurd?"
"You are the most absurd man I know, Zhou Zishu," said Wen Kexing. “And it’s not like the flowers want to die. You wanted to. It’s not the same.”
“Isn’t it?” Zhou Zishu said. He gestured at the flowers that painted the hills around them with color. “This year’s flowers die to make room for next year’s. With spring comes new life on the burial ground of the old. Neither the flowers nor I had a choice, in the end.”
Wen Kexing hummed, closing his eyes and leaning backwards to flop against the grass. “Can’t flowers just be flowers? I don’t care much for talk of death and life these days. What’s the cycle of rebirth to us, huh? We’ll enter Yanluo’s court on our own terms.”
Zhou Zishu lay down next to him. A cuckoo called out for its mate in a nearby tree. A fat black bee carried pollen from one bloom to the next. The clouds grew darker beyond the hills, promising rain.
Living things ate and drank and grew old and died. Was that really what the two of them were? Living things?
Wen Kexing raised an arm above his head to blot out the sun. The light between his fingers caught on the angles of his face like the bottom of a river seen through clear water. Fresh. Clean. The same, year after year.
“Lao Wen ah, I don’t want to live forever,” Zhou Zishu said quietly, after a moment. “No living thing should spend so long in springtime. I’d like autumn too.”
Wen Kexing did not say anything for a long while. Zhou Zishu waited. He could feel the thrum of Wen Kexing’s heartbeat in the pad of his thumb. Blood in his body. The count of his time.
Eventually, Wen Kexing rolled over in the grass until he was lying on top of Zhou Zishu. He plucked another flower from the patch of crushed foliage left in his wake and and tucked it behind Zhou Zishu’s ear to match the one behind own. Satisfied, he smiled at him until Zhou Zishu couldn’t help but smile too.
“You want to see my hair all stringy and grey? My face so wrinkly it’d put the old man under the moon to shame? My saggy, hairy ba—”
Zhou Zishu put both hands over Wen Kexing’s mouth to shut him up. “Enough, Lao Wen.”
Wen Kexing licked his palm. Zhou Zishu cuffed him on the ear. Wen Kexing kissed the tip of his nose and Zhou Zishu wound his arms around the back of of Wen Kexing’s head to pull his face into his neck. Wen Kexing’s eyelashes tickled. His breath warmed the underside of his jaw.
“I do,” Zhou Zishu murmured into the crown of Wen Kexing’s head, curling his hands into his hair. “I do. I want to grow old with you. I want to see your face when it’s wrinkly as a prune. I want to see evidence of the life we’ve lived together worn into the lines of our bodies.”
“We have plenty of scars to show for that,” muttered Wen Kexing darkly. “I’d prefer there were less of those, actually.”
“Scars aren’t things we choose,” said Zhou Zishu.

what i love about tumblr is the way that it inspires me to create things, like gifs or fic or whatever, because posts’ lifespans are longer than just a few days. i still get notes on stuff i posted years ago, and i get stuff on my dash that other people made a long time ago. it’s really cool how creations on tumblr can exist in perpetuity like that. i havent made a gifset in forever, but i’ve only been back on tumblr for like one day and i already really want to get back into gifmaking!
