Miriam Makeba’s portrait greets and grounds you near the entry of Africa Fashion.
Makeba’s emergence as a singer on the global stage coincided with the emergence of an independent African continent. Her songs blended popular musical styles like Jazz with indigenous South African melodies, often incorporating Swahili, Xhosa, and Sotho lyrics. Well-known globally for her songs Pata Pata and Qongqothwane (the Click Song) Makeba’s music and self-fashioning embodied African liberation and identity.
For many Africans, her music gave voice to the dawn of a new independent era and the liberation struggles that remained. Affectionately referred to as Mama Africa by her legions of fans, Makeba came to embody a forward-looking Pan-Africanism and Black Power.
See this portrait of Makeba and hear her singular voice as part of the African Cultural Renaissance that welcomes you in #AfricaFashionBkM.

Laduma Ngxokolo for MAXHOSA AFRICA
Fall/Winter 2015
Laduma Ngxokolo founded South African knitwear brand MAXHOSA AFRICA in 2012. Ngxokolo became interested in fashion design as a teenager when his mother, also a designer, bought a knitting machine for the home. Ngxokolo remarks this move ‘changed my direction in life forever’.
The two pieces here offer fine examples of the distinctive patterns that run through MAXHOSA, with the confidence of design and craftsmanship dominating the look, emphasizing the Xhosa aesthetic. The black and white shawl, which can be worn in a multitude of styles and shapes, is the first garment that Ngxokolo made to be worn by both men and women. The black and white colourway of the garment brings out the boldness of MAXHOSA design through its inherent focus on the Xhosa patterns, which are reminiscent of Xhosa beadwork. Here, the shawl is paired with red shorts, which was modeled at the 2015 Johannesburg Fashion Week.

In South Africa🇿🇦♥️the Xhosa's are a proud people and their cultural heritage is close to their hearts. Xhosa people's origin is in the South Eastern region of the country, currently called "Mpuma Koloni", or Eastern Cape. It consists of two regions the Transkei and Ciskei both full of big urban cities and rural areas with large farms. Men are to be Brave with Courage and Ambition, they're moulded to be great leaders full of Wisdom, Responsibility and Protection in their society. Traditionally the women's clothing and ornaments show the stages of their lives. A certain headdress is worn by a newly married girl, a different style by one who has given birth to her first child. One of the most important Xhosa teachings is to have "Ubuntu", Respect and Integrity.

Inkanyamba from South Africa.
The Zulu people of the area believe the Inkanyamba to be a large serpent with an equine head. It is a very tall creature. Most active in the summer months, it is believed that Inkanyamba's anger causes seasonal storms.
The Inkanyamba is aquatic and lives in lakes and waterfalls, so some suspect it to be a species of giant eel instead of a snake. This creature is said to be over twenty feet long.
This ancient connection between the Inkanyamba and severe meteorological events is due to the fact that the animal is rarely seen during the summer months. According to traditional Xhosa beliefs, the Inkanyamba (which, according to some ancient legends is also a “winged” serpent) takes to the sky annually — in the form of a giant tornado — in order to find its mate.
Even more intriguingly, there have been occasional (though admittedly unconfirmed) reports of two Inkanyamba engaging in vicious aquatic battles over what one must assume is an issue of territorial supremacy. Other witnesses have claimed to have seen fleeting glimpses of mating rituals.

Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù]) is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity". It is sometimes translated as "I am because we are" (also "I am because you are"),or "humanity towards others" (Zulu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu).
Tumblr media
In Xhosa, the latter term is used, but is often meant in a more philosophical sense to mean "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity"

Miriam Makeba in an interview, giving an example of how some of the consonants are pronounced in the Xhosa language.
Mind blown.
My heart aches a little that I will never be able to speak this beautiful language, and that I’ll probably never know what language/languages my ancestors spoke before they were brought here and forced to never speak it again.

The Xhosa are one of South Africa’s largest tribes and blend the modern world with ancient traditions. For young boys, their journey to manhood involves a lot of pain.
