I feel the calm before the storm -> all I know is I'm in trouble cause the atmospheres so cold
so now we're sitting in silence -> you're giving me the silent treatment
make up sex ain't gonna give us what we need -> when we're finished saying nothing can we please get back to loving?
you know it's always gonna end up in another fight -> when you find out what we're fighting for
baby, can we talk? -> I'll be ready to talk

WRITTEN ALL OVER YOUR FACE
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
A hurricane behind the door
So I’ve came ready for a war
When you don't want coffee in the morning
I know I’m in a hole
It's hard enough to get you sober
I've got no chance if I’m hungover
I aint even woken up yet
Not nearly vertical
All I know is I’m in trouble
Cos the atmosphere’s so cold
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
A hurricane behind the door
So I’ve came ready for a war
But I hear that thunder in the distance
I know it’s getting close
You’re giving me the silent treatment
Don’t know what it’s achieving
When we’re finished saying nothing
Can we please go back to loving?
When it’s good it’s really something
Can we please get back to us?
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
A hurricane behind the door
So I’ve came ready for a war
Hey babe
It's written all over your face, say it
So when you find out what we're fighting for
I'll be ready to talk

written all over your face - a close reading
faith in the future, track 2
right, so! since this song is one of those on the album that doesn't really call for a super in-depth reading, if you know what i mean, i'm going to keep it to the close reading and lyric analysis, without any big synthesis and conclusion. i am really doing these analyses to understand the album better myself, and to see all the parallels, so i won't be leaving any songs out, but some interpretations really are self-explanatory. i also feel like i'll be coming back to published posts to constantly add on new parallels i've found and whatever, so this is me taking the pressure off of making these perfect and just focusing on figuring out the puzzle that is this album >:)
and also this song is a fucking banger but i don't need to tell you that
LYRIC ANALYSIS
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
A hurricane behind the door
So I’ve come ready for a war
first two lines, which he repeats later: imitating a complaining tone - teasing
storm used as a metaphor for the fight that's brewing
general, classic theme of communication in their songs.
When you don’t want coffee in the morning
I know I’m in a hole
It’s hard enough to get you sober
I’ve got no chance if I’m hungover
I ain’t even woken up yet
Not nearly vertical
All I know is I’m in trouble
Cos the atmosphere’s so cold
coffee in the morning // keep driving
he has no idea what went wrong - has confidence it's not that deep, just a drunken mistake. or "you" is just grumpy. this has clearly happened before
when they don't stick together, it's cold // the greatest
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
A hurricane behind the door
So I’ve came ready for a war
When I hear that thunder in the distance
I know it’s getting close
You’re giving me that silent treatment
Don’t know what it’s achieving
When we’re finished saying nothing
Can we please go back to loving?
When it’s good it’s really something
Can we please get back to us? (now?)
"that silent treatment" - apparently happens more often
super super established relationship - louis can really say what's on his mind, if he wants to, and "you" clearly can, too, just doesn't want to sometimes, apparently
impatient tone - esp. "now?"
Hey babe
It’s written all over your face, say it
So when you find out what we’re fighting for
I’ll be ready to talk
It’s written all over your
It’s written all over your face
central theme on the album: he's there, but won't push you to talk. he'll wait til you figure out what to say // angels fly, that's the way love goes
however annoyed he might be, he has no intention to walk away. behind the annoyance and overt impatience, there's patience and love. but he'll call you out for your bitch behavior tho.
// "i'm in an LA mood, don't wanna talk to you", satellite

I've been enjoying the memes and how hilarious the fandom's been on how harry is the drama, a lot to handle ect; regarding waoyf lyrics and yeah i get it the song is from louis' point of view.
On the other hand, can we take a min to look at the picture and think over louis' case ? I mean from the lyrics he's hangover and we can suppose it's not the first occurence.
I'm thinking it could also be like a "angry princess 'cause her boyfriend got smashed again with the lads" scenario and that instead of expressing it as would be the simpler approach, she gives the silent treatment to get the point across...
So I'd say louis may be right complaining about said silent treatment but he was the one being the annoying drunk boyfriend (i mean getting smashed to the point of hangover isn't good in my book but that might just me lol) instead of spending quality time with his princess so i'd say 50/50 there 😌
Hi nonnie, if this is your conclusion that’s wonderful. Please don’t feel dismissed by what I will say. I should preface it by saying I don’t believe in autobiographical songs as much, but I do believe certain lyrics have a special meaning to Louis, and the overall sentiment of songs is what he identifies and connects with.
In WAOYF, I think the storyline of the song is a couple stuck in a certain conflict dynamic. Louis has only woken up and can immediately feel something’s off. He is not willing to face it or confront it, and since this pattern is so familiar to him, he leans back and waits.
What I hear isn’t an “out of his diary” moment, but a playful narrative to describe what happens when his lover gives him the cold shoulder, and how he’s going through the motions of coping with his insecurity. Mentally ramping up for whatever dispute could come, but emotionally yearning for the love.
I can very much relate to that and these sort of dynamics (in different shape or forms) happen to long term couples all the time and it’s very important to work out strategies that both feel seen. Sorry that was a bit more than I meant to write about this. I hope you still enjoyed it. 💜
