Wool by Hugh Howey
An underground thriller where society has been formed in a silo but for what purpose? Is it just about survival from the toxic upper world?
It is a strange title, Wool, for a book that appears to have rather a dark theme judging by the cover as well as being worthily heralded as The New Hunger Games but it becomes clear as to what the wool refers in due course – and it is nothing to do with cuddly sweaters, blankets nor sheep. Howey’s book is indeed a dark creation, literally. The action takes place in an underground silo, in an…

My Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2023! There's a lot to be excited about! #TV2023 #Television #Review
It’s the start of a new year, so time to look ahead to what TV shows, whether new, or returning, hit our screens this year. Obviously, there’s a lot to choose from, so this post will focus on my most anticipated series of 2023. 1. One for the book asks game. ❤️
a book that is close to your heart
The Forest of Wool and Steel
by Natsu Miyashita
Tumblr media
It's about a man who hears a piano being tuned one day while he's at school, and decides to do whatever he can to become a piano tuner. The characters are great, and there's lots of sentimental parts in it too. Here's a little excerpt from the Goodreads description which explains it beautifully:
"Set in small-town Japan, this warm and mystical story is for the lucky few who have found their calling – and for the rest of us who are still searching. It shows that the road to finding one’s purpose is a winding path, often filled with treacherous doubts and, for those who persevere, astonishing moments of revelation."
As a musician myself (currently on hiatus due to medical issues though), I found myself identifying with a lot of the characters, but I definitely don't think you need to be a musician to enjoy it!
Thanks so much for asking!

beyond the fleeting gales by crying is no joke the best album i have ever heard in my entire life, like both for personal and objective reasons. the album art is somewhat crude and might put people off about the quality of the music but it seems to be an ongoing joke the band members have going on bcs Look at this shirt lmfao.
Tumblr media
the first tracks honestly the only one that I initially did not like listening to because it takes a while to pick up, but over time I’ve come to appreciate it as part of crying’s ability to have a setup and a payoff that’s unpredictable and unbelievably euphoric when it hits you. There are several microexamples of this within every single track on the album, my favorites being in ‘well and spring’ and ‘wool in the wash’, by foreshadowing the final chorus with 2 or 3 lush choruses before it that showcase a new direction in the sound pallet, but leave a bit more to be desired. this is no problem though because that desire is WAY more than met by the end of the song with an explosive final chorus that can only be described as being continuously pummeled by a professional boxer and peaceful waves on a beach at the same time. this method crying uses sticks with me personally because as a musician myself i often find myself making things that i wish i had a way of expanding upon more because i know they have potential, but im just a weak little thang though so it takes a lot of time and effort to make any kind of progress and i usually end up scrapping things. i think that’s one of the common struggles associated with being a musician, but crying’s riffs consistently flesh out their ideas and fully realize them in every single song in BTFG. And they *know* that they can because of the intentional foreshadowing to the epic ending chorus with the little mini choruses. it’s awesome and fresh even after countless listens because the pacing in every concept is so expertly built up to, and none of the grand choruses feel like a truck hitting you in a bad way. its definitely still a truck. but you know youre abt to be hit by it, and know itll feel good. what even is this analogy anyway. im gonna return to the album cover i brought up at the start. have you ever like looked at a piece of art for so long u start seeing things that might not be there? i feel like the album cover for BTFG does this because the painting kinda sucks but i find it to be full of life and revitalized by the music; im finding qualities of it that i like because the music gave that extra dimension to it by association. in a way i think the album cover is like one of those prechoruses that leave more to be desired but are inevitably met by the bandmembers’ artistic vision and confidence plus Skill cos i cant undermine how freaking technical every single moving part of every song is, even the minimal parts bring out a new component. the vocals take the spotlight and turn the vibe knobs to 10 whenever the synths dwindle to the little analog bweep bwoop thingys, and the syncopation with the keys and the guitar is absolutely nuts, especially in solos like the one in wool in the wash. i read a comment once that that song made the OP straightup cry and they couldnt understand why, and that’s exactly the beauty that the songs i BTFG consistently pull through on. I have this thing where i really struggle piecing lyrics/movie dialogue together without captions and even then I really *feel* the passion and vision that the bandmembers wanted to convey. it oozes out of every single second, and so many ideas are packed into each section. sometimes it does feel busy but idec cos it sounds good and thats also just a statement to how much these people love their craft. they put all this time and crammed it into every second, like it all HAD to be there at once before they lost it or something. im kinda the same with my writing style lol but no english teachers grading this so 🖕the lyrics are also some of those poetic interpretable kinda deal, or maybe theyre not and im dumb but Idc. I interpret them to conflicts in my life and they r a nice place to go to to swim in some of my less nice thoughts comfortably, and i think the only other album that’s ever done that for me is vdc by sweet trip. i can keep going but ya this is what happens when nobody responds to me spam posting songs on twitter LOL. thanks for reading

I bought a set of those 3D printed hand combs a couple weeks ago and couldnt get the nails to fit (yes, they are the right nails). After some back and forth with the seller i got another brand of nails. Same problem. I figured the combs are just defective. He sent me a replacement, which just arrived today.
The nails still don't fucking fit. Like, i can kind of get some of them in the holes if i hammer as hard as physically possible for several minutes on end, but it's 1) already fucked up my wrists pretty bad and literally not even a quarter of the way through and 2) the force of me doing this is causing some of the nails to come back out, which means more fucking hammering just to keep them in place. There is no end in sight. I could scream.

Review: Wool Omnibus
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
This Omnibus Edition collects the five Wool books into a single volume. It is for those who arrived late to the party and who wish to save a dollar or two while picking up the same stories in a single package.
The first Wool story was released as a standalone short in July of 2011. Due to reviewer demand, the rest of the story was released over the next six months. My thanks go out to those reviewers who clamored for more. Without you, none of this would exist. Your demand created this as much as I did.
This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside.
Plot:
For the entire population, there has not been life outside of the silo. One hundred and forty-four floors, the silo was their home, with the only idea to the outside world being at the top, only giving light for the first few floors. Rules are stricken, everyone has a job to benefit the silo, one that they shadowed for when they were teenagers, and claimed when they were old enough. Jobs from the IT department, farms, mechanics to keep the generator running, to the sheriff and their deputy, and finally the mayor. This is all Holston had known, as he was sheriff of the silo. Him and his wife Allison had won the lottery, meaning that they had the entire year to try to get pregnant, their one chance of getting a child. That was the year his wife died. Stricken by a sort of madness, Allison broke the laws of the silo and was sentenced to their only punishment: The Cleaning. The Cleaning was for those who broke the law and were sent out to clean the lens of dirt and dust that had gathered there from the last cleaning. They are, in a way, scrubbing their sins away. The Cleaning is a death sentence, as after the lenses were clean you were trapped outside until the natural world took you away. Bodies lined the hill from past cleanings until the dirt covered them as well. Three years ago, Holston watched his wife do the cleaning, and now it is his turn. His job as the sheriff was to uphold the law of the silo, and yet he was the one who broke it. Holston's oldest friend Mayor Jahns knew why Holston did it. The Holston she knew died three years ago with his wife, and this was just an empty shell of a man. It was her job as mayor to find a new sheriff, as Deputy Marnes was unwilling to move up. For Jahns that does not matter as she already has the girl in mind for the job: Juliette. Smart, confident, and hardworking Juliette has been working as a mechanic since she was a shadow. Now one of the only ones to keep the electricity running, Jahns believes Juliette will be willing to make the tough choices to do what is best for the silo, exactly as a sheriff should. Juliette on the other hand does not like the job, she rather be stuck at the bottom of the silo, than have an office at the tippity-top. Still convinced by Jahns that she could actually change something, Juliette agrees and begins her ascent. Life at the top is not what she expected, learning the truth about the silo and more, Juliette puts everyone she knows at risk, not just from the law, but at risk for another uprising.
Thoughts:
At first no one was willing to publish Hugh Howey's work. Self-publishing short stories, Howey got noticed by the internet and his story skyrocketed. Now on the New York Times bestseller list and nominated for many awards, this story makes the top five science fiction books on Amazon.  Wool the first in the trilogy was what you would expect: lots of background, slow, and introducing all the characters and their back story. Divided into five parts, each is a little story of their own taking the point of view from Holston, Jahns, Juliette, Benard, Lukas and more as the story progresses. Not such a high rating? Well the story was plot dense, meaning lots of information, and backstory but not a lot of action. Getting the Omnibus version (all five books at one) makes this story five hundred pages of purely nothing. Near the fourth and fifth part is where things start “heating up” (so from nothing to some bubbles) but by this point you are already four hundred and some pages in and would rather be done and rush the ending, then take the time to enjoy it. The concept of this sci-fi world is interesting, making it a memorable post-apocalyptic story that still has more to go.

Review: Wool (2011)
Tumblr media
"We get no credit for being sane, do we? I get no credit. Even from me, from myself. I hold it together and hold it together and I make it another day, another year, and there's no reward. Nothing great about me being normal. About not being crazy." - Solo (Jimmy)
More of a curiosity than anything else, Howey's self-published Wool (with a big assist from Amazon, btw) will probably be more remembered for the role it played in shaking up the publishing industry in the early 2010s than it will as a worthwhile sci-fi novel.
A slightly interesting post-apocalyptic/dystopian premise about the last of humanity living in a tightly regulated underground silo can't save this collection of five novellas and short stories from Howey's powerfully unremarkable and annoyingly workshoppish writing. Seriously did he only learn what a metaphor was immediately prior to writing these stories? Honestly, I felt like I had just read a 600 page-long padded sentence by the time I had finished this collection.
Poorly drawn characters, plotting that vacillates between boringly turgid and at times vaguely nonsensical, an overall lack of credible world-building, as well as Howey's already mentioned tendency towards annoying, 'creative writing 101' prose, all combine to what amounts to a pretty tedious, nearly six hundred page story.
Why Howey left these stories in their original form and didn't go back and do some serious editing once they were a success is beyond me. Some judicious cuts and changes here and there could have made this collection much more consistent and readable.
I guess he could have used an editor after all.

Stay Cool in the Work Jersey, Bibs, and Comfortable in the Micro Grid Jersey, Ornot
This summer and fall have been strange. As October sets in, temperatures are usually dipping cooler, yet it’s still 80+ degrees here at the eastern service course. Even if Mother Nature can’t figure out what season it is, Ornot has helped us stay cool or warm, no matter what. The Work jersey and bib combo has us covered on the hottest days, while swapping in the Micro Grid jersey paired with the…

Good day!
I puppysat for a little bit this morning. It was nice to spend time with such a young pup. He was very mouthy but also so sweet and loving. I was worried he would hate me because I (ACCIDENTALLY) squished his head in a freezer drawer. I didn’t see his head! He obviously doesn’t seem to remember, but ever since then, every time I open their freezer I do a triple check for that little puppy.
After that I picked up Danny and we got some free food via a nice deal going on from a new restaurant. Then we went to his work before going home.
I brushed the cats, scooped litter, and smoked when I got home. I decided to watch The Dark Knight for the first time in my conscious adult life. It was a very good movie, Heath Ledger is phenomenal. Christian Bale’s voice cracks me up. I also love how at the end of the movie the police hunt The Batman so he has enrichment time lol.
Now I’m kind of stuck on the couch. I want to watch another movie and maybe needle felt some cat toys, but my brain is telling me to rot on my phone.
I think I’m going to write a letterbox review for The Dark Knight, start watching this movie I’m kinda into and try to needle felt. Maybe take a bath tonight 🤞
I’ve been doing better with food today, but I have only eaten two big meals. I didn’t count my cal*ríes because after yesterday I am kind of traumatized and don’t want to be reminded of how much I’ve had today. Tomorrow I will probably cook dinner and it’ll be a better day food-wise.
Tomorrow is my scheduled self care day. I hope I only do things I want
PS: I’m 55% through with Gerald’s Game. It just won’t end lol
Tumblr media
Update: Included a pic of the cat toy I made. Tried to make it look like a bug. Scott loved it immediately
