It isn't the same loss, but I just wanted to say that... just that I'm thinking about you, even though we're strangers. I wish/pray that I can somehow convey to you even a little bit of whatever it was that carried me, and continues to carry me, during the hardest parts of my grief. Last week, @wonderwafles and I talked about how Savathun operates with a very Witness-like modus operandi despite being on the side of the Light — her need to dominate all situations, to control the players and the board, operating in secrecy, solitude, when the Light is diametrically opposed to all those things. For the first time, I found myself convinced that she wasn't actually redeemed — not because her misdeeds are too grave, nor discovering her past and becoming more like her old self, but rather that she refuses to concede even a fraction of control to the Light, of trust to allies, of power to anything beyond herself.
And it made me sad to think this would be her downfall, but glad that she wouldn't stop being herself, against all better judgement. Because I love a character who believes so strongly that it dooms them, yes, but also because who she is is terrible and unique and powerful beyond belief and capable of fighting things worse, singlehandedly defeating multiple Disciples and having sights on the Witness Itself. To give up her nature feels like extinguishing what makes her . . . her. A fate worse than death, because her nature has survived death.
So I was fearing and expecting a reckoning; the loss of her Light, or a final death, at the hands of Eris or Ikora, because she will never stop being herself. And I went into the S22 finale fully expecting this to happen.
And while that would have been very just and poetic and classically tragic, there's something so much more nihilistically triumphant about her getting out nearly unscathed. I would be tempted to say she learned nothing, but I would like to think leaving Immaru with Eris is a gesture of trust, maybe the first time she's shown the soft of her underbelly to someone since Mara dug a shiv into it, in a manner of speaking.
It's very trickster of her, I think, to light the room on fire without suffering even a scorch, to force others to reckon with their own natures without ever questioning hers.

On the Mahjarrat homeworld of Freneskae, there is a large quantity of lava and rocks. As a result, most of the hobbies/ways of passing the time that the Mahjarrat had would involve one or both of those things. Some popular activities included:
Throwing rocks into the lava. Can be surprisingly satisfying. (Sliske would always go for the biggest splash rather than the furthest distance)
Collecting rocks. Many Mahjarrat children would have expansive collections of interestingly shaped or coloured rocks that they would collect and trade with each other. (Wahisietel had one of the biggest collections and each and every one of them was labeled with the type of rock and the date and location it was found. Sliske liked to swap them around and see how long it took for him to notice)
Throwing rocks at other rocks. There were many variations of this classic game. In some of them, a large rock would be placed down and everyone would try to get their pebble as close to it as possible, sometimes using magic, sometimes just by throwing. Another version was a bit like marbles where some rocks were scattered in an area and contestants would try to knock them out using other rocks. Sometimes rocks from collections would be used as a wager. (Azzanadra was the undefeated champion of that version as a child, before he grew up and realised that there were better things to do with his life)
Casting spells on rocks. It was not uncommon to see a Mahjarrat blasting a rock into tiny pieces, or to have a scattering of rocks levitating around them. Rocks were good to practice spells on since they didn't usually run away.
Pet rocks. About 99% of these were named the Frenskreaen equivalent of "Rocky McRockface"
Rock towers. The creator of the tallest rock tower would be honoured like the tribe leader amongst fellow children. Unless, of course, they were an adult, in which case they would be shamed and mocked for acting so immaturely.
Throwing rocks at friends. Yeah Mahjarrat children would do this. When their teeth and claws developed, they were no longer allowed to play-fight and it was harder for parents to catch them throwing the rocks. (Sliske would occasionally do this even on Gielinor)
Throwing rocks at anything, really. A good way to deal with anger or stress. Just imagine the boulder over there is your annoying friend who keeps wanting to borrow rocks from your collection but you know they'll just lose them in a bet at the rock-marbles game. Yeah. Throw the rock. That felt good, huh?
Chewing on rocks. Some of the softer types of stone would sometimes be chewed, and the minerals in them would be absorbed and help strengthen Mahjarrat bodies. They would also sometimes be ground up and snorted.
Rock roleplays. Similar to how Gielinorian children play with toys or dolls, Mahjarrat children would play with rocks. The most common game was where one rock would be taken to the ritual marker (probably another big pointy rock) and sacrificed to rejuvenate the other rocks.
Rock carving. Mahjarrat claws are harder than some types of stone, and they were able to make little trinkets or toys for the children. (For years, Azzanadra had one that Sliske had made when they were younger. Eventually he managed to lose it. He never did end up working out what it was meant to be.)
Rock cults. This is the point that I realise my brain isn't working anymore and decide to stop.
On arriving on Gielinor (no wonder they wanted to go when this was what they had to do for fun), Wahisietel started writing a book of 1001 things to do with rocks. The unfinished manuscript can still be found in Ali the wise's house in Nardah.
Lava surfing (suggested by @wonderwafles). For the Mahjarrat who likes to live dangerously. Their tough, rock-like skin can withstand brief contact with lava, but if they fell in and couldn't get out quickly, that would be it. The surfboards would probably be made out of... you guessed it, rocks!

Current obsession: I don't actually know that I have anything at the moment that would fall into the "obsession" category, though maybe my own little Malev AU? everything else has simmered down into a sort of permanent sort of love and steady rate of consumption

six sentence not sunday (round 2)
thank you for tagging me, @polutrope! i know the fic poll tells me to write some helcaraxe chomp chomp but i haven't had time the past few days, so please accept some especially mopey moryo from a few days ago as my most recent piece of writing.
Caranthir had known that attending the party was a terrible idea. When his mother had first raised the subject, his first thought - well, his first thought after fuck no - was that she could go and enjoy herself, and he’d stay late in the shipyard doing more of the menial but not unbearable grunt work that was part of the conditions of his release from Mandos. But then his mother had told him that she actually wanted him to come, and she proved impossible to sway. Even his argument that nobody had exactly enjoyed his presence at parties even before he was a double mass-murderer was deemed not good enough.
Well, almost nobody.
More to the point, there was a part of him that was loathe to deny Nerdanel anything these days - not only had he let her down in just about every way that a son could; he was also, for some inconceivable reason, the only son who had been granted permission to return to her.

Apparently I like starting my fics by describing the play of light! I noticed it in some other works not listed here as well. There are only so many ways you can kick off a story, and I like starting with a visual snapshot to set the scene if I don’t have some cool dialogue in mind haha. I always have the “first sentence should hook the reader” rule in the forefront of my mind, but I’m not sure how well that comes across most of the time…

The Light is here. It churns the air with killing heat. It lashes out in great blinding torrents and gouts of flame. It makes of a man a wellspring, and the man makes of the wellspring a sword, and the sword cuts and scalds and burns and razes. There has never been a brighter slaughter in this place of futile death.
This alone does not interest the shadow. Nor do the wails and shrieks of the dying, or the hammering pulse of war growing louder with each strike. All of this has been seen before.
The wellspring falters. The man holds a sword, and blade must be met with blade. War’s blade is sharper and heavier and older. He will fall, and drown, and be devoured.
