i was so excited for the new winx reboot sneak peak i kind of forgot to write down my initial thoughts so here it is (i’m so curious on how this opinion of mine will hold up once the show comes out!!)

first impressions - i actually really like it!

look, i love 2d animation just as the next guy, but i don’t think we’re ever getting back the s1-s4 animation (2d animation from s5-onwards was SO stiff and jarring looking, huge no thank you), and if that’s the case, i think the 3d style that they went for in the reboot is one of the better solutions for it.

it’s vibrant! it’s colourful! it’s giving “magical girls”! it just looks aesthetically pleasing! also i’m OBSESSED with the way they animate their hair, especially bloom’s, it’s giving “bratz series” level of eyegasm hair animation for me. so getting this after the moody, edgy, dramatic “fate: the winx saga” tone set in, i am so relieved we are going back to our roots babeey!! (now here’s to hoping that animation doesn’t tank as the series goes on like how miraculous ladybug is animated by like, 2 different studios and then one episode feels amazing and the other is “hm”)

now for bloom:

her iconic bangs are back baby!! i love how they translated them into 3d without them being too uncanny. the outfit is very cute, but can we PLEASE stop putting bloom in pink?? one of her major appeals as a main character in a girly show was that she wasn’t a pink lead! and blue works so well with her colour palette of red hair & blue/turquoise eyes it’s just aaaaah! replace the pink parts with blue and she’s perfect. (tbh these are still wip, so it could change!)

i’m still warming up to the idea of denim leg warmers though, they look weird to me now (will probably get used to them) but they kind of go with her character, because it looks likeee our bloom s1-s3 personality is back!!!!!! I’M SO HAPPYYY like YES!!! i missed her for a DECADE

next up is mitzi!

they nailed her design imo. she looks like original mitzi, but she also feels like a proper, “updated” version of her look. modern, but not too modern so she’s stuck in the era, but also retains the character of og mitzi. overall, no complaints on my part, only praises!

and then we have the new logo!

IT’S JUST DOING THINGS TO ME IDK it feels so pleasing to the eye?? the purple to orange gradient is just right, the pink is sprinkled in just right and the blues are there to accent it, it’s just. SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING to me it truly does feel like a natural update on the og winx logo. it’s amazing!!

and if their transformation is the one originally leaked in 2021?? i think it’s on a very good path to being a great reboot! now i’m still really trying to keep my hopes as low as possible, because rarely do i watch a reboot of a beloved series and think it’s on par or better than the og (actually, only shera really comes to mind…), but! i am liking what i’m seeing! i choose to trust mister straffi on this one!!

Initial thoughts on Fate: the winx saga [SPOILERS]

Things I liked:

- RIVUSA BABYYYY

- felt more like OG Winx club, can’t explain

- more friendship scenes

- more magic and lore

- sky and bloom were cute too (wildest dreams ah ah ah)

- terra gay

- Stella and Beatrix friendship (and possible romance??)

- Aisha getting an actual storyline, even if it was mostly romance based

- FLORAAA

- Sebastian VALTOR?

- possible Marion and oretel?

Things I didn’t like:

- Beatrix dying, wasted potential

- Musa rejecting her fairy magic. Don’t get me wrong, I love that she’s doing specialist training, but I hoped her storyline would be more about learning to embrace both roles

- that weird thing with riven and flora, glad it didn’t last long

- Andreas/Saul/sky storyline felt a little lazy

- edit: WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH TERRAS CLOTHES IN THE BANQUET EPISODE. Literally why do they always put her in the most drab lifeless clothes let our girl be sexy (Eliot salt looks amazing in all her press outfits)

Lisa: fairy of darkness and the night - not my character but Alora's little sister (3 yrs younger). She can be a little draining for her family as her mental health hasn't been the greatest since she was a child but as she grew into a young woman, Lisa slowly starts to let go of past feelings and moves on to work on herself and her powers.

Florence: headmistress of Alfea, daughter to Faragonda and mother to Cécilia. She has inherited her mother's wise words and warmth to help her students where she can - unfortunately she cannot control her own daughter.

Queen Valam: Minu's mother and a strict queen through and through

Cyra: mermaid of volcanic rock - she and another mermaid are Minu's only friends back home in Andros

Maude: fairy of rust - after running away from home at the ripe age of 17 Treasa went to live with her best friend Maude who then became the fairy's first gf, they broke up when Treasa wanted to study at Alfea

Cherry: Jun's ex from highschool and a sweetheart, these two have no bad blood whatsoever, the breakup was mutual. After she graduated in Solaria she went to earth to start a new life

Adelaide: fairy of dreams - Alora and Lisa's mother. She's a tough woman but melts as soon as she sees her two girls. She became a professional and well loved doctor early on in her adulthood, something her husband, Johan, did not like at all. When Alora was 7 and Lisa 4 Johan started abusing Adelaide, only stopping 3 years later when Adelaide finally filed a divorce.

Ayuna: fairy of ghosts and death - she first starred in my graphic novel 'Lost Spark' as the villain but she'll be the villain throughout s3 of Glowinx! A little detail to her backstory: she used to be one of the major fairies on earth alongside Morgana, Nebula, Diana, Sybilla and Aurora - but being power hungry and having a dark, twisted power she was deemed too dangerous and powerful so she was banished from the circle and never given much attention anymore.

Another spoiler for the rewrite - post their recapture in s3, the Trix are separated in their sentencing. Darcy is sent back to rehab (equivalent of Light Rock monastery but not the monastery itself for reasons that shall be spoiled another time) since she was the only one that appeared to be influenced at all by the stay there. Stormy is sent back to Omega with the idea that she cannot escape on her own. Icy is sent to Oblivion since she's the leader of their group and the obvious instigator of their crimes. Oblivion erases a person's every memory until they're trapped in a comatose state forever. Darcy is freed by the Ancestral Witches and has a limited amount of time to free her sisters before something irreversible happens to them.

My thoughts on the Winx girls redesign:

Layla/Aisha: I love her gradient skirt from blue to green! Also I don't know if it's the lightning in the picture but it looks like she have abs and I'm living for it!

Bloom: Look at this absolute nightmare of an early 2000 outfit! (affectionnate) The skirt above the leggings, the demin, the sleeveless vest … This was me in middle school XD

Flora: I really like her dress, but the vest looks weird to me. She is my fav so I'm a little disapointed.

Musa: (Short Queen!!!) Love her hairstyle, but her outfit is too … clean? She needs more punky-sporty vibes!

Stella: Who Are You? Why Pink? Why No Bangs? (the only thing I'm glab about is that they keep her golden eyes!)

Tecna: Is she now a cyborg or are those prostestics? I can't tell. Not a fan of the shiny black skirt.

Overall, I'm happy. It could have been a lot worse! But still season 1 looks are forever in my heart (since I was a young teen when it was realeased). I really miss traditionnal animation!
