Three Days in Vienna
As my wanderlust-filled life took me to Europe last Christmas, the three days I spent in Vienna were magnificent and awe-inspiring. What better time to reminisce the experience than now while home-bound and longingly missing life as we knew it.
Vienna is stunning, and rightly so, as it was the capital city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, after all, with its rich and varied history and stunning modern architecture. I remember the first day when I woke up and had breakfast at Casteletto as it was only a walking distance away from my hotel and also conveniently close to the metro Schwedanplatz. With its polite servers and cappucinos that pack a punch to kickstart your day, their menu and large choices of flavors did not disappoint at all.
Be ready for a sensory overload as you walk through the aisles of the huge Naschmarkt, and do not forget to stop by for Wien coffee in one of the stalls. Pause and take a moment to savor the Sachertorte alongside it or any other Viennese culinary specialty, because there is no dearth of options. The buzzy energy boost from that coffee is sure to have you well on your way to take in the legendary sites all around the city from the breathtaking Schoenbrunn Palace and Hofburg Palace to Mozart Museum. You will be tuckered by the end of the day, which is perfect for another stop by the classic Cafe Frauenhuber, where Mozart and Beethoven once played, serving local food.
It would be an injustice to my Viennese experience if I don’t mention those amazing Christmas markets. You are bound to come across Christmas markets as you wander through the city. You can spend an entire day exploring the food stalls and local handicrafts in all the nooks and crannies and still not get enough. It’s not unusual if you find yourself going back for more at night when the holiday decorations are in full display. Strolling beneath beautiful chandeliers, pausing for some of the ubiquitous mulled wine to beat the winter chills and sneaking in souvenirs for friends back home are all parts of the package.
Vienna also has amazing rooftop bars and restaurants that overlook magnificent views of the city skyline. Taking in the sheer beauty of the city view, domes and cathedrals from the Sky Bar, sipping on mulled wine, Christmas music playing, and surrounded by equally awe-filled friends and family, it was nothing short of perfection. Vienna will leave your head spinning but its beauty, culture, hearty stews and mouth-watering apple strudels will be worth every bit of it.
