Winter favorites
At more than two million items, the scale of the Newberry's postcard collection is a strength that can also be a weakness. The collection's breadth and depth -- e.g. who knew there would be so many cards featuring pigs ice skating? -- is what makes it such a valuable resource for researchers studying visual culture in the 20th century. And while no one's exactly lining up from the Department of Ice Skating Pig Studies, the images can provide insight into a wide range of historically significant topics such as women's rights, racist stereotypes, and Indian boarding schools.
But for more casual users, the sheer number of postcards can be overwhelming. Attempting to navigate all 52,000 (and counting!) in our digital collections -- or even just the 653 winter scenes -- can be an exercise in frustration.
Enter Postcard Gallery. We've pulled together a few of our favorite postcards on some of our favorite subjects, including cats, coffee, bicycling, and more. Each gallery contains links to our digital collections site, where you can explore more items on a topic, view cataloging data, and download high-resolution files for re-use.
Want to help out? Finding postcards for the gallery, or any other purpose, requires descriptive data and subject tags for searching. So please fix a warm drink, get cozy, and visit Postcard Tag, our crowdsourcing project where you can contribute to historical research by making primary sources more accessible. (For more information, see What is Postcard Tag?)
