Mega Man: The Sequel Wars (v1.1) - Brightman Stage as Super Roll by Jo Li KMC at YouTube
This might be the coolest thing I've discovered so far.  Seriously!  Even without actual sprites, this is just so cool~!

Ok, now I’ve played the Wily Wars versions of 2 and 3. My original notes on the port itself from the post I made after beating 1 still apply, the sound quality has taken a dive, some of the sprites miss that mark (Guts Tank is the ugliest, overshaded thing in the game, I reckon!), not enough Bug Fixes etc etc
Unfortunately, this game has really made me wonder why anyone would rank MM3 as the Best Mega Man Game. It’s frightful!
Like, 2 is a solid game UNTIL the Wily Stages, each of which having stupid fiddily stages and/or a big slog of a Boss fight, reaching its nadir on the Boombeam Trap. It doesn’t help that the stage 1 music is overplayed to hell and the Stage 3+ is a depressing dirge.
But my point is that 2 is a much more fun experience to play than 3, as the Robot Master levels are all pretty tight and the various Weapons are cool to use (even though everyone starts leaning mostly on the OP ass Metal Blades...)
But then, 3! It was rushed in development and BOY does it show! True to it’s number, it gave us 3 great new features, but then it basically feels like a watered down retread, especially when it comes to the Special Weapons, or the differences are way too drastic and were prompty phased out in 4 onwards.
The Good:
Slide, oh my dear sweet beloved Slide!!
Proto Man (not fighting him, but to embiggen the lore with him. And his theme music!)
Rush [Jet] (Fuck Rush Marine though, that’s worse than useless. What a waste on an idea!)
Built off 2 with E-Tanks, but carrying 9 >>>>> 4 lol
The Bad:
Again, most of the Special Weapons. Spark Shot is Ice Slasher, but worse! Shadow Blade is Metal Blade, but worse (though Metal Blade was too good to start with lmao)! Search Snake is Bubble Lead, but Worse!!! I actually find the Top Spin really useful, but you gotta know How to use it to benefit.
The Stages go on too long. Then half of them become EVEN LONGER and generally worse.
The Doc Robot levels in of themselves are a weird idea, they like they’re Wily Stage level Hard but on retreads of the Robot Master stages, then you’ve got to fight Larger Hitbox’d versions of the MM2 bots with no idea what they may be weak to. Awful, terrible, garbage levels.
Then the Wily Levels are overly easy in comparison!
The .....Other:
Wily Wars coulda used the port chance to actually go into the MM3 storyline. It doesn’t!
The RM Levels have odd themes, like what’s the deal with Snake Man’s ....Snake but also Sky Tower building? Why is Shadow Man a Lava Level? Is Top Man’s a Weed Greenhouse? The only one that does seem to fit the Plantary Explorers vibe is Gemini Man’s.
The Gemini Laser noticably unduces Slowdown, even though this is a more powerful port. woops.
Again, I know the game was a victim of Crunch, and that’s never gona bode well, but what about this port, why couldn’t they have used this as a chance to pave over some more cracks?
Basically, in my opinion; MM1 is the best game in the trilogy, with noticable flaws but the most consistant gameplay, plus it sets almost every standard in one go. 2 improves most aspects for an amazing first half, but then becomes tedious in the endgame. 3 had bright ideas that get lost in a quagmire of extremely annoying levels.

This person, "LatinAutor", needs to be stopped.
Also, why doesn't YouTube give you some sort of "mistaken identity" option, anymore? That's exactly what this is – the auto-copyright thing detected a YM2612 composition as electric guitars.
God bless automation.

Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Tumblr media
Because of course my journey through classic Mega Man would take me through the versions officially made for my favourite console ever.
Wily Wars is an odd beast. On paper it's fine; a Megadrive remake of the first three games with some additional content for those who complete said trio of titles. They look fine enough and sound okay (YM2612 variants of the tunes are in my eyes a large case of Your Mileage May Vary™) but they've got some weirdness about them for sure.
To start with, the visuals are usually wonderful in their own way; not really showcasing the Megadrive's visual flair as much as they could, but servicing as a slightly-fancier redraw of the originals. Mega's sprite looks a little weird though, and there's some slight hitbox dissonance that may throw-off fans of the original. By and large, I've no problem with the rest; it's sometimes actually kinda nice to see a large boss sprite without a flat black background accompanying it. But then again, other times have a completely different atmosphere because of this. Again, it's fine.
And they sound fine, too. As in 'okay' -- the Megadrive renditions of the tunes largely being inoffensive and having minimal 'twang' associated with the format; but as a side-effect of this, very few of them are memorable. Indeed, the only tune I can bring to mind right now is Shadow Man's from MM3, because dat Megadrive bass actually does wonders in giving the piece a funky new feel. Most of the rest are serviceable, forgettable, alright.
Tumblr media
Gameplay, then; the most-important element of any videogame (ignore the haters, all three of them, it is!). Mega controls fine, perhaps a little on the sluggish side when trying to 'twitch' toward a platform edge for a further jump, but nothing majorly serious. Firing, however, is another story. Most of the weapons function fine, but there's the odd occasion (Hard Knuckle I'm looking right at you) where the speed is so out of whack that it becomes almost unusable as it was in the original game. That, plus the plain old buster shots seem to move in slow-motion, three of them lingering onscreen; especially when running in their direction; for much longer than desired. As if to knowingly 'fix' this little problem, the potential firing rate of them has been slowed down from "almost as fast as you can mash" to something like 1/4 a second. It's not ideal, although it serves as something of an incentive to use the special weapons more, I guess.
It's worth noting that a fan-created patch exists that fixes the buster shot speed among other things. I may play with this in the future, if it improves the proceedings, but I digress here.
So the three games are fine-but-not perfect. If you want a 1:1 recreation of the NES trio, it's probably better to stick to those unless you really want the fixed Top Spin this collection has. But! There's that 'Wily Tower' thing, a whole new minigame unlocked when beating the three main titles, as something of a challenge for those who've mastered them.
Except it's not. The interesting thing it does offer is a user-chosen 'loadout' of eight weapons chosen of any of the game's selections; plus three of the various support items, be they Magnet Beam or the numbered Items or the Rush support tools. However, probably because of this, Wily Tower is actually very easy indeed. It's little more than a curio, and not too interesting one at that; the mix-and-match nature of the weapons extends to the level gimmicks and enemies and gives the minigame more than a little of the same feel a fangame or hack may have. It's there if you want more Mega Man, but it won't absolutely Rock (Man) your (Mega) World or anything. 3/5

I think there was a brief period where Dr. Wily genuinely tried to better himself by studying classic literature, but then he read Journey to the West and his takeaway was “WAIT A MINUTE, I COULD MAKE SOME EVIL ROBOTS OUT OF THIS!”
and the Genesis Unit was born

The Claw robots appear near the end of Bubble Man's stage, floating down a waterfall. They also appear in Mega Water S's stage, in The Wily Wars's Wily Tower mode.

Wooo, I played Mega Man 1 (Wily Wars version) in what combined would be a couple of hours, on the Switch today! Here are the most important points:
The Mega Drive soundfont is really naff for a Mega Man game! Everything sounds soft and toothless, there’s no lovely crisp and crunchy sounds of the NES, which are a Large Part of Mega Man’s audio identity!
The sprites for the most part are rather nice, Rock is in good preportions, though in 16 bit his 3 frame running looks a little odd.
The stage backgrounds have a lot more visual layers to them, an effort I like on paper but I’m unsure if they all hit the right vibe in practice. Ice Man’s stage bothers me most, the undiluted Cyan of the old ver brings to mind a tropical paradise that Ice Man used his immense power to flash freeze over, whereas here the Palm Trees are under a dreary winter sky so it doesn’t have the dope juxtaposition. Cut Man’s “Abadoned Warehouse” theme is pretty solid, though it’s a bit shadowy for my own spin on his working environment lol
No Select Pause :(
No teleporting with ladders either :(
The Magnet Beam doesn’t work as well as it did in the NES ver, and the visuals make it look like Cat Poo (but blue and glowing)
Cut Man has been massively buffed in this game, and I always pick him first (Cause he’s My Favourite 🧡) but his was a very tricky fight cause, while he still fliches upon being hit, he no longer takes increased damage from the Rockbuster, while being very nimble and having a boomeranging projectile.
This is a good point to say that yeah, I used Rewinds lmao. They got me through many tight moments and vastly improved Gaming Experience in things like Mario 2 [Lost Levels], getting 100% on Yoshi’s Island, and doing this run deathless B3
I had minimal rewinding on the Yellow Devil fight, though. Dodging his blobs felt a lot easier to memorise and the hitbox was a little more generous (note: When I play NES ports I always use the Select Trick lol)
I beat Copy Robot very slowly, with 1 or 2 Rockbuster shots, then switching to Super Arm for a breather as Copy went into a good position. I forget if there’s a better way to cheese it, I know he only acts in like 3 positions unless you go in all guns blazing though.
The uhh.... Bubble Boss thing was done by me nearly dying while using the Rolling Cutter and then using all the Guts Blocks in what I hoped were the last 4 Bubbles. It may’ve been last 5 Bubbles, but I managed to get very lucky in hitting 1 and another coming out of the gate at the same time B3
Then the last level which I love for the Aesthetics, though I found the hardest part was the brief section with the Yasachi (that’s the word, right?) cause the lift didn’t load in until I Magnet Beamed, then I kept slipping at the jump part lol
I’ll be playing the MM2 and 3 sections of Wily Wars soon, though hOof, both them games have mega stupid BS sections. I’m still a Big MM1 Lover, you know! But I do wanna try the Wily Tower out, so sacrifices must be made -w-;
