1, 2, 3 fic writer asks <3
1. Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?
one-shots. i like a little self-contained adventure, it must be said.
2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?
a little of both? my brain definitely works faster than i write, so i'll eventually start taking down notes for what's to come. i don't believe i've ever known the ending to a fic before starting to write, though, i'm very much a 'let the story take me where it wishes' kind of gal.
3. Describe the creative process of writing a chapter/fic
step one: get an idea that inspires me
step two: pick a title and set up the google doc
step three: write the first couple paragraphs and feel very pleased with myself
step four: hit wall
step five: write anyway
step six: hit new wall
step seven: go over what's already on the page, tweaking and gathering momentum for when i reach the end of what's written and letting the rhythm lead me into new, inspired sentences
step eight: repeat steps four through seven until complete
step nine: read the whole thing over, see how it feels as one entity
(optional) step ten: send to bethany!

VIOLENCEEEE 23, 24, 25
hello and thank you for today’s dose of violence 🔪
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
Dinbo in the Mandalorian. I called Bo an asshole numerous times before S3. I have come around. (It might have helped that the hardcore Dinbo antis were so horrifically annoying. Like, don’t ship it, whatever, but Din is Literally the fandom bicycle. I ship him with lots of people. People were acting a tiiiiny bit sexist towards Bo!)
Reylo, like, certain interpretations of Reylo, all of which have to do with sub!Kylo and not making them Generic Hatefuck Couple. Also, like, I don’t really like woobifying or redeeming Kylo. Let him be a messy disaster.
Haladriel, again, only specific interpretations, all of which have to do with sub!Halbrand. Do you see a theme here?
…I think the trend is “these heterosexual ship fandoms are varying degrees of toxic/annoying/boring but the ship itself can be fun if you have a good imagination”
24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
hmmm…. (willingly steps into pit of vipers) “canon” is an arbitrary construct and fidelity/faithfulness in media adaptations is a conservative way of thinking. open your minds 👍
also white queers telling me, a woman of color, how to fix fandom racism. next!
25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
I mean, I have a couple. Complaining about short-haired elves in TROP—we as the fandom ~should know better~ (Treebeard voice.)
That new Tolkien fans ~haven’t read the Silm yet~ (geez, give people a second. Besides, not everyone finds it as compelling and accessible as LOTR/TROP.)
That Star Wars fans haven’t read tie-in EU book #3784 (or haven’t interacted with other properties at all.)
Or that some of us like TLJ. I actually appreciated what that interpretation of Luke was doing; I know some didn’t and that’s valid, but stop calling people fake fans lol?
okay that’s enough violence for now. i am not asking for debate I stg we just need to learn how to live in harmony with people who think differently but also learn to draw the line between “different valid opinion” and “I am going to block you for my mental well-being”

Fanfic tropes: mistaken identity, unrequited love, pregnancy fic
(Really trying to give you the range here 😂)
Mistaken Identity: C
…I don't know that I have ever read a mistaken identity fic on purpose, and I am totally drawing a blank on whether I've read it at all? In fanfic, I mean, obviously I have read it in fiction generally. I'm sure I'm forgetting something and you will remind me what it is lol.
Unrequited Love: A
YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES. Obviously as an Aldflaed shipper this is something I am into, but I truly live for when the love remains unrequited indefinitely/permanently, or when the affections the characters have for each other are mismatched in some way. It's prime angst, especially if there is a foundation of trust and/or other types of love. FLAMING ELMO DOT GIF!!
Pregnancy Fic: D
I don't read fluff so I think that eliminates a lot of pregnancy fic, and I will very quickly nope out of a fic if pregnancy is handled in a way that's unrealistic or annoying. I hate when authors apply a modern medical understanding of pregnancy to historical settings, that makes me insane lol. And I don't enjoy the way gender is often treated when it comes to fics that feature pregnancy, so very often it's just not my cup of tea.
Give me a fanfiction trope and I’ll grade it

for the fic title game, "A Long Time Gone" don't ask me why, it's just in my head lol
Looked up the song since I wasn't as familiar as I thought and oooh even though I don't really write angst, I immediately thought of Galadriel in her angsty years missing Celeborn and Finrod dearly and feeling a bit like a pariah for relentlessly pursuing Sauron. The first episode of TROP, to me, makes it clear Galadriel feels utterly alone and unsupported in a lot of ways.
So something like: A Long Time Gone, rated T, ~10k word oneshot, Hurt/No Comfort and Angst
With something to the effect of Galadriel's thoughts, feelings, and memories over the centuries while pursuing Sauron and other allies of Morgoth post-the War of the Jewels. Specifically missing moments of angst where she allows herself little bits of grief or otherwise suppresses it when little things remind her of her late brother and missing husband. Finrod Felagund shone so brightly and died in the dark. Her husband loved her unconditionally and if he's not dead, he's something worse. She's cut off from her support system in so many ways. Even when she reconnects back to it after her forces insist they return to Lindon, the people who haven't experienced what she has or internalized the utter violence in such a way kinda devalue her lived experiences.
Just a lot of hurt and rage. IMO it's deeply unsurprising her speech to Adar later in the series was expressed the way it was. For all she knows, someone is torturing her husband to become the same ruthless killing machine that he is. That's horrific.
Ask game: send me a made-up fic title and i’ll tell you what i would write to go with it

Hello! Disclaimer that I'm going to be a right ✨bastard ✨ here, so viewer discretion applies. This is also for the fandom in my pfp; I'm not naming anything to avoid maximum violence.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
Perm Guy & Redhead Lady. If you know you know.
In the case of the Guy, he's honestly... fine. He was fine when he showed up in canon. I liked him, though I don't understand why he was touted as a military/strategy genius when all he was doing was stall while trying to understand the unfamiliar situation. I can respect a man who needs info to come up with a good plan. And I do like what they did with him in the show's last season. But there's such a wide timeskip between seasons that... it doesn't work. The charactersation doesn't work. It feels like he changed lots, but we don't get to see that change. Cop-out. And most of his fans just focus on one or two aspects of him and... don't develop him past that. It's not fun for me personally, I write him differently.
And in the case of the Lady... I feel like a bastard AND a cunt. I love her in canon! I do! It's (some of) her fans' representation of her what I don't like. Granted it's the most vocal fans who are like this, so... yeah. Makes me feel awful. Then I go watch canon and remember that, oh, it's just fanon I don't like, and I feel better again. But WOW. I understand the motto of "ship and let ship", I abide by it -- but I've seen one too many posts about how she's perfect in X ship and there are no other options for either her or her love interest, because they are just made for each other. Ship and let ship, superfans of her!! Don't do the vaguepost equivalent of throwing rocks at the sky to see what birds you might enrage!
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
... you know, I'm not sure how common this is. But I've seen it before, so here we go. This tattoed Rogue who starts out young and then grows up gets... I'm not sure if "infantilised" is the right word. "Simplified" is more like it. I once saw someone make the argument that he'd been [TRIGGER WARNING NON-CON] imprisoned and raped repeatedly by men while in Dunholm as a teen/child [END TRIGGER WARNING], and in the same fic he was bashful and shy and innocent when Main Character flirted with him in a non-sexual way. You'd think there would be juicy characterisation and/or character analysis the reader could do, but... no. No there wasn't. At all. The Rogue didn't feel like the same character going from one scene to the next. And that viewpoint got adopted by many fans of the original fic, with the same flat results.
(That first author in particular also had a habit of writing this Rogue as the kind of babyboy you'd expect from a DD;LG relationship, but 99.99% of the time it was in non-sexual, non-explicit, non-DD;LB fics. What even?!)
9. worst part of canon
The books don't go deep enough on some aspects, and they downright gloss over others. Characterisation never goes deep. The portrayal of the english-speaking world and xtianity is well-rounded, but the foreigners don't get the same treatment. The Norse Pantheon in particular is just AWFULLY written and researched. Njörd isn't Rán's husband! Loki isn't the heathen equivalent of the xtian devil! THERE ARE MORE HALLS THAN JUST VALHALLA.
Yes this is not the only author who's made these mistakes. Yes I am annoyed at them too. I did say I'd be a right bastard in these...
10. worst part of fanon
I could say "the fans that idolise and borderline deify both the characters in my first answer", but that'd be too easy. Then again I can't think of anything else, so that's my answer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay, look. I love so many of the characters in Ted Lasso. But I am here most of all for Roy Kent. If you are also attached to Roy, and if you have ever wondered any of the following, I recommend Dauphine by @wildwren .
How did Roy get so emotionally repressed?
What does it feel like inside his head and his body when he's holding onto his sadness, not letting any of it out?
What are the dangers of him being overly reliant on one single person for absolutely all his emotional support?
What happens when Roy has an exceptionally shitty month, and that one person isn't supporting him?
How mean can Roy be to Ted and have Ted still see through him and keep showing up for him?
What combination of events/characters could compel Roy Kent to finally go to therapy?
This story has a somewhat hopeful ending, but in the meantime, Roy goes through hell, and he reflects a bunch of that toward his friends when they try to help him out, including both Ted and Jamie (you'll never guess which one of them is more graceful about being on the receiving end of Roy lashing out). In addition to Roy's excellent interactions with Ted and Jamie, I appreciated the portrayals of several other relationships -- Roy & Sharon, Roy & Phoebe, and Roy with his sister and one of his early teachers. And, of course, Roy & Keeley, though those scenes were also agonizing, because this is, in part, a fic about them potentially breaking up.
Content warnings: This fic is dark in ways that I would have noped out of if they were handled with less skill. There is an (off screen) cat death in this story, which is one of the nope-iest possible things for me. Also some mentions of suicidal thoughts. Roy and Keeley are both more messed up and currently-not-good-for-each-other than they usually are in fic (but tbh, I often find them too perfect and too soft in fic, and this was a welcomely different take). To me, this fic handled that all well enough, was emotionally real enough, and ended on a satisfying/cathartic enough note, that I was very glad I didn't nope out.

thank you so much for all your kind tags on my gifsets!!!! it means so much to me. im so glad you're enjoying them 😭😭😭
ABSOLUTELY! And thank YOU! I know how long it takes y'all to make them and it adds so much to the fandom. Like I've noticed details in the show I wouldn't otherwise notice because of how well done the gifs are in this fandom. And it enables me to ignore my problems and stare at moving pictures on my phone that give that good good serotonin boost. in conclusion ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

THE TERRORRR PLS PLS PLS, also his dark materials 👀👀
omg YES! so the problem with me talking about the terror is that most of the cast is Indistinguishable White Man to me but i do know crozier is played by jared harris and hickey... oh god is his name actually hickey has anyone made the obvious joke yet...??? is played by the guy who was also in gunpowder milkshake (terrible film but i love michelle yeoh and karen gillan so of course i watched it.) and paul ready and ciaran hinds are there too. lots of guys. i’m sure i’m missing a lot. anyway. white men! tumblr lesbians seem to love these white men!
ANYWAY it’s based on the doomed antarctic expedition of, i wanna say the mid to late 1800s, but it adds the element of Giant Fucking Monster to the whole shebang which i think is really sexy. i’m 99% sure the show features cannibalism and mutiny and freezing to fucking death, which i think is super sexy of them all. despite the tumblr fame of this show i have not seen a single episode. mostly because it would be sad to watch it alone, i wanna hoot and holler at these objectifyable men with someone who Gets It, you know? also because i’m a wimp and i need someone to hold my hand :3 i think there’s also an Indigenous woman who shows up but i really don’t know the plot beyond “oh no we’re trapped in the ice boys we’re gonna have to take drastic measures to survive!11!!!” and then they all die. all i know about the characters is that hickey is a jerk and everyone thinks crozier is hot. that is all.
as for his dark materials, i LOVE the lead actress from logan and the actor from the (very bad show but he was great) letter for the king. we also stan whatshername the adult female lead who played cathy in wuthering heights and the lead in true things (2021) what iS her name this is going to haunt me forever. i think lin manuel is also in it? with his polar bear??
and i know the concept of daemons and vaguely that some magical Dust is important, also that james macavoy and cathy from wuthering heights OH HER NAME IS RUTH WILSON YAYYYYY my brain has not failed me--anyway they’re the protagonist’s parents but also fighting each other??? and i know philip pullman was writing these as retorts to CS Lewis’s Narnia/Christianity as a whole so it’s a takedown of Christianity as an institution and canonically lesbian Mary Malone was a big deal because she wasn’t canonically gay in the books? she has something to do with the biblical Garden and man’s fall and how important individual choice is??
i also know that it ends sadly for lyra and will and they’re separated forever :( and i’ve definitely read the tumblr post book excerpt about lyra not being able to use the altheiometer (i am definitely spelling that wrong) anymore at the end but having to learn from scratch. anyway it would absolutely destroy me if i ever chose to watch this show but heyy what’s fiction for if not ripping my heart out!!!!

@wildwren replied to your post:
my personal interpretation of the "you will survive" line is that olek has some memory of ling yi surviving him in previous simulations, that he has died to protect her before. so he doesn't know much, but he has this knowledge that she will survive, even if it's just that she will survive HIM.
there's some evidence that other characters have similar foreknowledge of theirs or others' fates. i think about Iben feeling so strongly that Tove is "chosen" by God, she is Destined for Something, but maybe it's (partially) that Tove repeatedly lasts longest in the simulation.
Seriously, I love this interpretation! I'm so on board with the idea that some part of them remembers the previous simulations, and that in enough of them, Olek has saved Ling Yi from dying to be able to assure her that she'll live. And maybe it's possible that on some level, he knows that the "real" Ling Yi (in 2099) can't die, even if her mind somehow convinces her that she has.
