[ Discussing David Tennant's déjà vu about returning to the role after 4 years away ] The eerie sense of familiarity only increases, however, when he's asked what he's allowed to tell us about this episode. "I can't tell you a thing," he offers apologetically. "That is what I remember about Doctor Who more than anything. People want to talk to you about it more than anything else and you can say absolutely nothing." "Or we just lie," interjects Matt Smith, who, at this point - in April - is sitting on the secret that he is about to quit the show and usher in the era of Capaldi. "Well, to be honest, everyone thinks I've been lying furiously," replies Tennant, a touch shamefacedly, recalling earlier denials that he would appear in this episode. "I suppose I've told a couple of white lies, but until quite recently this was all a bit up in the air, so I haven't been lying quite as hard as everybody thinks.

also it’s my one year blaseball captain anniversary. Fucking insane.

a lot could be said about stede and ed’s different ideas of how to get back at people who have wronged you/made you feel bad/humiliated you,

esp about the fact that stede stops ed from committing acts of well-deserved violence against both the french captain and the french ~aristocrats~. i mean, in a way, if ed did go one-man kraken on them, they would definitely feel weak, powerless and in general horrible about the whole situation! they’d suffer, and they’d die! in terms of taking revenge, it’s... the better option, really

but i kind of... like that stede took matters in his own hands. first, it shows that he took it personally, felt guilty for allowing them to hurt ed. who’s a grown man, yeah, but still... unaccustomed to this environment. and stede was aware of the things those people can do to you, and yet -- so of course he wants to get back for ed. then, it shows the clear divide between ed, defaulting to violence, and stede, for whom mental/societal kinds of violence are the most effective. the feeling of being ostracized and having no control over his position in the group is still present in his mind, so when he has a chance to make bullies -- this time adult ones -- have a taste of their own medicine, he’s sure as fuck going to take it.

this also got me thinking about social class/position in a group and violence. obviously those in power can be as violent as they want, and it’s their right, while those without it are penalized and compared to beasts or animals for it. going back to a school situation -- when you’re being bullied and want to retaliate, you have to be really sure you can pull it off, because a weakling pathetically trying to hit someone obviously stronger than them is just... yeah, pathetic, and it’s not helping or proving anything. that’s where “don’t stoop to their level” comes from, i think, as a sort of pat on one’s back -- you’re not that pathetic and worthless against them, you’re just, uh, a better person! and they’re all jealous of you anyway. but also it’s a double-edged sword, because it automatically tells you that trying to retaliate in general is bad, and so, you’re stuck.

what’s fun is that stede got back at the french in a way that’s similar to what nigel did to him on the revenge -- revealing an unpleasant secret, or a humiliating fact from one’s past, in front of people whose respect they want. though maybe respect isn’t the right word -- the french have been suspecting those things about each other anyway, and stede pretty much doesn’t have the crew’s respect regardless. so perhaps it’s just the fact of someone knowing things about you, and being willing to use them against you? to talk about them when you want to forget it all?

another important thing is -- the group itself. the french were, obviously, not that fancy and not that friendly to each other: we started with seeing them exchanging cheeks kisses and squealing with delight, oh look who came!, and ended with physical fights and insults. classy! but, if it was stede vs his bullies -- adult or not -- i think it wouldn’t have gone that way. first of all, he probably wouldn’t know any of their dirty secrets, as someone who’s obviously not a Cool Kid; but even if he did know something, it would still be his word against theirs. also, something something rich posh boys’ weird-ass initiation rituals that ensure everyone has something on everyone. like, yeah, of course everyone knows that, idk, that one time they caught nigel and chauncey acting a little differently than how brothers should act, but if someone from outside the group even mentions it, we have no idea what this primitive fuck is even talking about! that is, until we decide we can gain something by acknowledging that, ohhh now that would be a completely different pair of wellies, to use a polish idiom lol

i have no idea where i’m going with this, but ach, the deliciously fucked up world of societal norms, unwritten rules and mental games one plays with oneself as well as the society! and the depressing way stede’s fucked up by that, too.

because after all that, yeah, stede believes (has no reason not to) in the power of devastating someone emotionally, while ed leans more towards the old good walloping, but the thing is. the thing is. when you’re being bullied, “rising above the bully’s level” and not retaliating doesn’t help shit. if someone’s safe and comfy in their opinion of you as someone worthless, they’re not gonna feel anything even when everyone else is all :O about your moral superiority and mercy. when you deck them in their stupid face, or skin them with a fork, though
