What's a movie/tv show/book/etc. you watched that had unexpected good whump?
Let's see. There's I can think of.
I like Quest for Camalot for the animation, songs and there's also a surprising amount of whump scenes towards the end. (Also, I have a soft spot for blind characters)
Burn notice is also good. I haven't watched all of it, but that main character is honestly going through it. The premise is a spy/assassin/guy who was cut off by his agency for no apparent reason. All of his money was taken, his accounts closed down, his safe houses taken away, and there are people out to kill him and he's trying to sort out why in the world this is all happening.
The Magnus archives. I went into that knowing it was a horror podcast but was delighted to see how whumpable Jon was and how many times he got kidnapped and hurt. 10/10

for sure! although Disclaimer, i havent been reading house fanfic for very long and ive pretty much only read house/wilson so far, SO this is more of a hilson fic rec list than anything lol
Warning Signs by out_there - oneshot, 12k words, Wilson-POV, set around the end of s3. SUCH A GOOD FIC i laughed so much while reading this. genuinely delightful. possibly my fav house fic i’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
The Line of Thought by tevinterimperium - oneshot, 12k, Wilson-POV, set after s3 e15. THEEE classic fake-dating AU. this was the first fic i read in this fandom and it absolutely fucks. im a SAP i love a good “no homo but OH GOD THE FEELINGS” plot!!
Desert Mesa Motel - 8 miles outside of Kingman, Arizona - 12:03 AM by plorp - ficlet, 1k, House-POV, post-canon. this makes me BAWL. very very good fic but SAD. and DEPRESSING. will make you CRY/pos
How Not To Be Boring by fourleggedfish - incomplete/abandoned, 497k, Wilson-POV, AU from around mid-s5. if u like whump (which i absolutely do) u will probably like this fic. if u are squicked out by sex, u will hate it bc these guys bang 24/7. this fic had me pacing, glued to my phone, sick to my stomach, crying (several times), and obliterated my sleep schedule. i can’t rec it highly enough. every chapters includes appropriate content warnings, but some major themes that appear throughout are character death (not of main characters), the aftermath of severe child abuse, and mental illness. if any of these topics are a trigger for you, please don’t read this work.
Forsake Me Here by MonsterBoyf - complete, 8k, Wilson-POV, ambiguous setting. Wilson has intrusive thoughts about mutilating House. He tries to cope. features a lot of very graphic imagery and does an excellent but extremely accurate job of portraying an OCD-spiral that could be triggering to people. i LOVE this fic i think about it so so much.
An Inconvenient Truth by anathaema - complete, 15k, House-POV, ambiguous setting. contains the quote “You’re the suicide bomber of revelations” and is one of the funniest things i’ve ever read. plus the way in which wilson’s sexuality in this fic is handled is honestly so realistic and entertaining. HIGHLY recc this to absolutely everyone who enjoys hilson
the more it took away by scribespirare - oneshot, 10k, House-POV, ambiguous setting. Omega!House has his first heat since presenting. Alpha!Wilson helps him through it. I LOVE OMEGAVERSE AND I LOVE FUCK OR DIE AND I LOVE THE WAY THIS FIC HANDLES THIS IS JUST GRAHHHH. If u don’t enjoy omegaverse u won’t like this but i can’t make a house fic rec list and NOT include this one
Aftershocks by black_cigarette - series, around 125k in total, various POV’s, set sometime post-Tritter arc. this fic IS gen, but honestly, i didn’t know that going in and didn’t realize it wasn’t a slash fic until the very end. tldr is that wilson is brutally assaulted because house has been gambling with some unsavory people, and house helps him deal with the aftermath. this fic does not pull punches. its is extremely graphic and everything wilson goes through is described in detail. it is a messy story about recovering from brutal trauma and everything that entails. DISCLAIMER: there are sequel(s) to this series available on the author’s livejournal, but i haven’t read them and can’t speak to anything they discuss.
no need to worry (making up your mind) by scribespirare - complete, 25k, House-POV, set sometime in the early seasons. House lies about having a Jewish boyfriend to get out of visiting his mother at Christmas. Things quickly get out of hand. THIS FIC IS SOOO *tears into it with my teeth*. I love when they scheme together <3

The von Karma Guide to Whipping Your Brother Into Shape by mundanecactus - might be my fave non-girlfriend ace attorney fic of all time. masquerades as a wrightworth but is actually a franmaya. informed countless headcanons of mine and accidentally awakened kin memories i did not know i had. there is a scene while miles and franziska go grocery shopping and act so annoyingly siblings the whole time i had to start biting my pillow. please read this

Hi! Such a fan. My guilty pleasure is extremely well written explicit noncon fics with main characters whose despair at explicit abuse you love but who you root for to be saved -- like yours, All Kinds of Broken, Captive Prince and its amazing fic universe, a really great one called The Past is Weakness by MercurialTenacity, etc. I could go on... which is my ask! Any chance you could do another post offering & soliciting reccs for the best of the best? (Already checked out the previous list, thanks for it!) I feel like I spend hours skimming through AO3 to find the rare gems - which makes it worth it, but damn what a time suck🙏🔥
I completely sympathize with the time suck that is finding good fic.
Recently I've been enjoying A Stain that Won't Dissolve and Underline the Blue, both by @not-poignant and both still updating in bite-sized, totally addictive chapters.
While I cannot get into MDZS in any of its many incarnations, Time Signature and Say More by @letteredlettered require zero canon knowledge and are excellent. More angst/pining than actual whump, but there's some light BDSM, for a treat.
A Treaty With Teeth by @yelpfic has it all: slavery, forced prostitution, dragon sex. Okay, so I'm not really into dragon sex, but the first two things on that list are so deliciously well done they make me enjoy the dragon sex.
I also recommend Baldur's Gate 3 -- yes, the entire game, and specifically Astarion's arc. It is just *clenches fists* so good.

thanks to @jesuisici33 and @alrightbuckaroo for the tags! I am very much aware that I'm late, but that's perfectly okay with me ;)
This week's theme: Rec a 'gateway' fic - a fic that you read and it was so good it lead you to read multiple works by the same writer.
The rules: Tag a fic and explain why it was a gateway fic / what you liked about it. Then tag some people to see what everyone else is reading. Spread the love! I have multiple good candidates for gateway fics, but I think I'm going to have to choose TK Strand, Perfect Man by @notaparty-trick. This little fic right here is basically what got me hooked on the Carlos whump train. I love how cute and funny it gets while still providing that classic hurt/comfort that actually inspired me to finally get back into writing so that I could make my own hurt!Carlos fics >:) Turns out it's all a cycle.

hello I feel like I owe you an apology for being so blunt with asking for the “pb/antifa whump”, I get that probably threw you and a lot of other people off. The reason I’ve been asking for this stuff was because I always thought that there could be a really interesting story with the theme of the pb/antifa, given their history with each other, and when I discovered this whump community I thought it would be interesting to see a story like that involving whump. But anyway, I’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable.
Friend, listen, I'm willing to play devil's advocate for you because liking whump really is something that involves a complicated moral standpoint for some people. I mean look at me, I'm happily making thirst traps of a serial killer who tortures and assaults his victims, and other people eat that shit up. Who am I to draw the line in the sand?
But that request is, I think, too real for most people's taste. At least here. PB brutalizing individuals personally and at rallies are already a dime a dozen, unfortunately. Why would I seek out a serialization of what I can get 20 news articles on from a Google search? That's not a narrative I or a reader can control to our liking, that's just a sad reality a lot of people have to suffer through.
Not to mention there's no fun in rooting for a villain like that. There's no comeuppance, there's no redemption, there's no sinister nature we can safely explore. Incredible, the white supremacist beats the shit out of someone who's more than likely queer/POC/underage/etc or any combination and faces no repercussions. That's not something a lot of people want to read for fun, especially when they themself are more likely to identity as the whumpee in this scenario, which further reinforces the horrible truth they already deal with in real life.
It'd be like asking for a KKK!Whumper and a BLM!Whumpee, or an ICE!Whumper and an immigrant!Whumpee, or a shooter!Whumper and a student!Whumpee. Can you seek out, or even write these situations yourself? Sure. Genuinely wouldn't surprise me if there are people out there who happily create that kind of content. But...why? Don't you get enough of that injustice in real life? Why does it being fictional make it any better when it honestly isn't as fictional as you think.
But then, of course, it all comes back around to: who am I to tell you what you can and can't like in whump? Who's anyone to say how far is too far when we go about our day mercilessly brutalizing (or killing) silly little characters for the fun of it? They don't get happy endings, they don't get justice, so why get upset over this?
I can't answer that, I'm not a sociologist or philosophy major. So I'll just say that that's territory that goes too far for me, and I think it does for most people here on Tumblr which is a fairly left leaning/liberal platform all things considered. You aren't going to find that kind of content from me. Now that's not say I might never write a whumpee character experiencing some form of verbal/physical assault due to their race/gender/orientation and so on, but it's not the focus and it's most certainly not meant to be the highlight of the arc.
If you genuinely want recc's for that, I'd recommend giving 4chan a browse. They love violence and owning the libs, I'm sure someone has a couple greentexts of what you're looking for at the very least.
And again, you're more than welcome to make your own content to share, but if that's the vibe you're going with then you're not going to get very many fans here. We do our best to put content warnings for EVERYTHING in our writing/art because different things trigger different people even if we're all in the same fucked up li'l community.
