BOTD: White-crowned Pigeon

"A strong and fast flier, the White-crowned Pigeon regularly undertakes long flights over water, and it has been able to colonize islands almost throughout the Caribbean. It occurs commonly in parts of southern Florida, but most of its Florida nesting colonies are on small offshore islands. Flocks are usually seen flying swiftly overhead, or perching in treetops, feeding on berries."

February 1, 2024 - White-crowned Pigeon (Patagioenas leucocephala)
These pigeons are found in much of the Caribbean, extreme southern Florida in the United States, and along parts of the Caribbean coasts of Mexico and Central America. They mostly eat fruit from trees and shrubs, as well as some insects, small snails, seeds, and flowers. Usually roosting and nesting in mangroves, they may fly over 30 miles in the mornings, often over water, to reach their foraging habitats. Breeding in colonies of as many as 500 pairs, they build messy platform nests from small twigs in trees. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks with crop milk. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due mostly to habitat degradation and hunting.

WIP of a white-crowned pigeon. I am always and forever will be on my bird kick. I am currently going through the list of every single bird in existence and ranking them for myself and well. I got to the pigeon family and fell in love with this bird, they are so incredibly dapper. I’d love to make prints of this when I’m done but I haven’t decided if I want to make this a watercolor painting or if I want to do it digitally. And if I do it digitally…in what style…so many choices.
