Extinct creature #3
Bishop's ʻōʻō
(Moho bishopi)
Tumblr media
Known only from Moloka‘i, Bishop’s ‘ō‘ō was a large, noisy honeyeater endemic to the montane forests of the Hawaiian islands of Molokai, Maui, and Lanai. Their songs were simple two notes, took-took, which could be heard for miles. Causes of the bird's extinction include deforestation, predation by introduced predators (such as the black rat), clearing of land for agriculture and livestock grazing, and diseases which were introduced by mosquitoes. It was last seen in 1904 by ornithologist George Campbell Munro.

You’ve heard of the easter bunny, but have you heard of the easter goose?
She hides colorful eggs all over the wetlands in Snohomish county and if you find one, the easter goose locks onto your geographical position and approaches you at deadly velocity.

I have sad news
A beautiful Carolina Wren was building a nest on my parents porch and I've been enjoying watching her for the past few days. Unfortunately when I went out today I found her laying dead on the ground. She must have just died as she isn't rotted or bleeding. She also hasn't fully stiffened up.
CW: DEAD ANIMAL BELOW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's absolutely gorgeous and in impeccable condition, I was wondering if it'd be possible to donate her to an ornthinological collection (I'm very close to the Smithsonian)? I've also seen it suggested that it be given to animal control for testing. I do not have the skills nor materials to preserve her (also I think you need a permit?) I have no clue how she's died, hopefully not by disease (ive thoroughly washed my hands). She's currently wrapped in some paper towels and put into a Ziploc bag in my freezer.

Big Update:
Now that I'm unshadowbanned on my main account @cheatachu-72 I'm turning this blog into a zoology sideblog (another special interest of mine)
I'll post about animals and possibly even veterinary medicine, something that I definitely want to do in the future. My blog name will not change.

this is gonna be a long one so bare with me as i ramble
i’ve realized fairly recently that doing art as a job is never going to be sustainable for me. while my hands being injured absolutely sucks and i hate it, it’s made me realize i was actually really stressed out, especially since art has been my single source of income. being a working artist means that there will be very little structure and it’s all on me to create my schedule. i can’t do that very well! and not it a “woe is me i cant do it”, but more of a “i understand my limits”.
the timing of this sucks though because i literally have one more semester left until i finish my art degree :’) but after the initial panic im actually kind of excited! i’ve actually decided that once i finish my degree, im going to get my prerequisites out of the way and then major in marine biology (nobody saw this coming)!!! i’ve always had a tough time seeing my future as a professional artist. it’s much clearer now with this new potential job:)
so once my hands get better (please please please be soon oh my god), i’m going to take less commissions and draw for myself more often 💕

I love being overwhelmed by zoology. Knowing I'll never know every species, its ecological niche, how it looks and behaviours. Although its a sad thought, it comforts me in the fact there's so much biodiversity that even the most intelligent species ever on earth can't grasp the depth and beauty of the natural world.

Extinct species #5
Kangaroo Island Emu
(Dromaius novaehollandiae baudinianus)
Tumblr media
The Kangaroo Island emu or dwarf emu was restricted to Kangaroo Island, Australia and was much smaller in size than the mainland emu. It became extinct in about 1827 due to hunting and habitat loss from burning. They fed on berries, grass and seaweed and could run swiftly and defend themselves by sending harsh kicks forward.
