Korean Speech Levels & Titles

What are Korean honorifics?

They are ways of speaking in Korean that communicate the relationship between the speaker and the subject or the listener. Korean has this built into the language with special words, titles, and grammar.

Korean has different speech levels. These levels are demonstrated in the verb endings. The speech levels that are used most often are formal speech, polite/casual speech, and Informal speech. You may also see them listed as high, middle, and low.

Korean Honorifics

Korean honorifics can be thought of as a special speech level. In Korean culture, respect is given high importance in everyday life. This is evident in the Korean language. Koreans use honorific language to communicate respect between the speaker and the subject/listener. Honorifics are used to communicate relative positions in a hierarchy. Typically Korean honorifics are used to show respect to someone higher in the hierarchy or a person who holds a high social status.

Formal & Polite

The formal speech level is used when you’re speaking to someone older than you, someone who holds a higher position than you, or someone who belongs to a higher social hierarchy. Sentences using the formal speech level usually ends with ~ㅂ니다.

The polite speech level or also known as the standard speech can be used in most situations. You can use this speech level when you’re speaking with people you know, but don’t have a close relationship with them. Sentences using this speech level usually end with 요.

Informal speech level

The informal speech level or also known as casual speech can be used when you’re speaking with people with who you have close relationships such as friends and family. This is also the speech level you can use with those younger than you or of lesser seniority.

Korean Speech Levels vs Honorifics

Korean speech levels can be thought of as politeness levels. Typically they are verb endings that demonstrate the formality of a situation. For example, you might use an informal speech level with friends, someone the same age as you, or someone younger than you. You would use the standard speech level for everyday communication. You could use the formal version when giving a speech or a news broadcast. You can use different speech levels to talk about yourself.

Honorifics are used to show respect to the listener or the third person you’re talking about. Honorifics are usually special words (nouns, verbs, verb endings, pronouns, etc) used to show respect. Korean honorifics are typically used for speaking to someone older than you or higher than you in the social hierarchy. You cannot use honorifics to talk about yourself.

What are Honorific Terms in Korean?

Honorific terms in Korean are special titles, words, and verbs that are used to refer to people older than you or higher than you in the social hierarchy.

Honorifics in Korean

The word “honorifics” in Korean can be expressed in 2 ways. The first one is 존댓말. The other word for “honorifics” in Korean is 높임말.

존댓말 is about how you convey or show respect in your sentences while 높임말 is about the choice of respectful words you use in your sentences. 반말 can be translated as the use of informal or casual speech.

KOREAN SUFFIXES

님 = a high-level honorific used to show respect to someone. This suffix is used with people’s names and titles. Koreans can call you using your full name or first name + 님. That is a common way to address someone with respect.

You’ll see the 님 suffix added to job titles. A common 님 usage is with the title of teacher - 선생님.

씨 = used to address people that are roughly on the same level of the social hierarchy. (slightly older or younger than you) An example of this might be two students in class.

This is used with a person’s name + 씨. For example, your classmate is named 배지훈. You address your classmate as 지훈 씨.

아/야 = used with people who are close to you and younger. The format used is name + 아/야. If the name ends in a consonant, then you’ll use name + 아. ㅑIf the name ends in a vowel, then you can use name + 야.

KOREAN TITLES:

오빠

- Literal meaning: “older brother”

- Is also used to call: A male friend or a male sibling who’s older than you (as a female)

- Is used by: A younger female to call an older male friend or sibling

형

- Literal meaning: “older brother”

- Is also used to call: A male friend or a male sibling who’s older than you (as a male)

- Used by: A younger male to call an older male friend or sibling

언니

- Literal meaning: “older sister”

- Is also used to call: A female friend or a female sibling who’s older than you (as a female)

- Used by: A younger female to call an older female or sibling

누나

- Literal meaning: “older sister”

- Is also used to call: A female friend or a female sibling who’s older than you (as a male)

- Used by: A younger male to call an older female or sibling

선배

- Literal meaning: “senior”

- Is used to call: A female or male student who’s older than you at school/university

- Used by: A younger female or male student

- Example: If you’re a senior at a university and your friend is a freshman, you’re 선배 to them.

- Opposite word of 선배 is 후배

후배

- Literal meaning: “junior”

- Is used to call: A female or male student who’s younger than you at school/university

- Used by: An older student to call someone who’s younger than him/her

- Example: If your friend is a freshman at a university and you’re a senior, your friend is 후배.

동생

- Literal meaning: “younger sibling”

- Is used to call: A younger male or female sibling or any friend who’s younger than you (as a female/male)

- Used by: An older male/female or an older sibling to one who’s younger than them

- Side note: You don’t use this word when you call them. Call them by name.

여동생

- Literal meaning: “younger sister”

- Is used to call: A younger female sibling or any female who’s younger than you (as a female/male)

남동생

- Literal meaning: “younger brother”

- Is used to call: A younger male sibling or any male who’s younger than you (as a female/male)

Why Do Koreans Use Honorifics?

This hierarchical culture is followed strictly. Not only just for differences in status but differences in age as well: even a 1-year age difference is considered enough to warrant honorificity.

In many situations, you will see Koreans become overjoyed when they learn that their conversation partner is the same age.

This is because they can speak freely and comfortably to people of the same age, so they will refer to each other as 친구 (chingu, meaning friend), even if they are not close. But if their conversation partner is older, they must use a more polite and formal way of speaking. If they don’t, it could be thought of as disrespectful, embarrassing, or socially insensitive.

You’ll also see 아/어 드리다 in place of 아/어 주다.

The structure of the first phrase is: verb stem + 아/어/여해드릴게요. This is commonly used to tell someone that you will do something for them. You can translate it to “I will do … for you.”

If you form this phrase as a question, it will be: verb stem + 아/어/여해드릴까요?

This is commonly used to ask someone if they would like you to do something for them? It translates to “Shall I do … for you?”.

what r the korean honorifics? because everytime i hear one im so confused

ok so these go according to age and/or status

님 (nim) — this basically means mrs/mr. in english people might actually feel uncomfortable being called this bc it makes them feel old, but in korean it’s like the best way to show respect to someone older you don’t know. so say i were talking to seokjin, i would say seokjin-nim (석진님)

씨 (ssi) — this doesn’t really have a direct translation. it’s basically an even more respectful and professional honorific. so say if i were at the doctors office, the secretary would probably say 윤진씨 (yunjin ssi).

형 (hyeong) — a younger male calls an older male this. pretty self explanatory. my brother would call jay this, basically

누나 (nuna) — a younger male calls an older female this. my brother would call chaewon this

오빠 (oppa) — a younger girl calls an older male this. kinda like saying older brother, but it doesn’t always mean that. girls actually often call their boyfriends this, i think chaewon does LMAO

언니 (unnie) — a younger girl calls an older girl this. i actually call a lot of my female friends this lmao and i get called this a lot

*if you wanna call someone any of the four above, just ask, people, especially guys, see it as a compliment and will actually urge you to*

선배 (sunbae) — you call somebody older or more senior this. likeeeee, i call my best friends dad this lmao

후배 (hubae) — you call somebody younger or less senior this. like someone’s little sister or a kindergartener you’re tutoring

there’s also a bunch of family member rules, like paternal and maternal grandparents but i’m not gonna write all that out rn

Just out of curiosity, why would Jimin who is the dongsaeng in his friend group then refer to his older friends as friends if they're not the same age but he wouldn't refer to Jungkook as his friend? I remember him saying all of his friends were older than him except Taehyung so he included Taehyung in there so he lumped Tae in with his outside BTS friend group. How can Jimin as a dongsaeng call his outside BTS older friends friends but can't call another dongsaeng in another group of friends friend? Jimin's reason for mentioning all of that was him making the point that the age thing didn't matter to him. Not sure how to explain this better. Also Jimin and Jungkook were paired up for a photoshoot last year I think for seasons greetings and their concept according to Jungkook was 'Two friends who came from Busan together' but it was actually how he/they interpreted the 'Adaptation' concept that was the name for their photoshoot. Is Jungkook being the dongsaeng mean he's allowed to call them friends?

You must be referring to what I commented on this post. I admit it wasn’t nearly as thorough as it could’ve been, and I completely understand how you might be confused.

So I think I should make a few things clear.

First, having a friendship with someone and calling them chingu are two different things in Korea.

Second, the word ‘chingu’ has many layers to it. In the vlive in question, Jimin used the word in at least two different ways.

Let’s break down the first point.

In the reblog I deliberately used the words ‘friend’ and ‘chingu’ separately because there can be different connotations to each word.

The dictionary definition of friend and chingu can be the same. But in colloquial usage, chingu has implications that, as far as I know, friend doesn’t. (And vice versa, of course. I’m not trying to say Korean words have more rich meaning or whatever.) One of those implications is that people who are chingu are of the same age. This is so so so important. You can have friends who are older/younger than you, but Koreans usually don’t refer to them as chingu. We use the adjective ‘친하다 [chinhada]’ which means ‘close’, and call these people ‘chinhan unnie’ ‘chinhan oppa’ ‘chinhan hyung’ ‘chinhan dongsaeng’ ‘chinhan hoobae’ etc.

Now, it can get rather bothersome to call all these friends of varying statuses differently. Sometimes you don’t really want to specify your friend’s gender or age for whatever reason. Sometimes it just isn’t important. Sometimes simply implying they’re someone you have a friendship with is enough. So you just say chingu. It’s not common, but not rare either.

For example, let’s say you’re a woman who are good friends with a man who is a couple years older and also went to college with you, and you want to tell a 3rd person who doesn’t know this person a funny story that you heard from him. You can refer to this guy friend in countless different ways - a sunbae I know (아는 선배), an oppa I know (아는 오빠), a close sunbae (친한 선배), a close oppa (친한 오빠), a sunbae from college (대학교 때 선배), etc. Or you can just say, my chingu told me this story. It not *impolite*, since you really are friends with him (as in, you have a close enough friendship with him), and you’re not calling him chingu (as in, someone who’s the same age) to his face.

Even still, you don’t usually go calling this person your chingu in front of him. You wouldn’t introduce him as your chingu to other people. Does this mean he’s not your friend? No.

(Similarly, calling someone your chingu doesn’t automatically mean you’re actual buddies. You may hear Koreans say ludicrous things like, oh he’s my chingu but we’re not that close. In this case chingu doesn’t mean friend in the literal sense, it most likely means they were just classmates.)

To sum up, you can have a friendship with people of any age but you can’t call all of them your chingu, especially if the age gap is big (*). However, you can still categorize them and refer to them as chingu in for convenience’s or privacy’s sake.

(*This really depends on the individual, but I’d personally say plus or minus 2 years your age can be safely considered peers. If the other person is old/young enough to be your parent/child, then you don’t call them chingu, period. You just don’t.)

Now on to the second point!

I went back to rewatch the vlive where Jimin mentioned having older friends, and to a native Korean it’s pretty obvious he’s using the word chingu extremely liberally.

I've pulled some examples from the vid and added transcripts in both Korean and English, since the vlive subs can be misleading at times.

(talking about his frequent arguments with V)

저희가 이게 친구라서 그런지 여러분들도 친구가 있다면 이거에 공감하실 거예요 희한하게 되게 자존심을 부리게 되고 알겠어, 혹은 미안해, 고마우면 고마워 이렇게 하면 되는 얘기를 이게 선뜻 입 밖으로 잘 안 나와요

It's probably because we are chingu You guys will agree if you have chingu You become too proud to say things like Okay, or I'm sorry, thank you You should just say these things But they don't come out easily

Here chingu can mean either just friend or friends of the same age. I personally took it as the latter, because in the broader sense Jimin is friends with all BTS members. The fact that he's attributing his conflicts with V specifically to them being chingu, proves that chingu here doesn't mean any other person who you have a friendship with, it explicitly means friend of the same age.

(talking about V being his only same-age friend)

그러다 보니까 어느새 나랑 동갑내기 내 친구는 사실 이제 어떻게 보면 저는 여기 사회생활 하려고 이렇게 서울에 올라오고 내 동갑내기 첫 친구이자 지금까지 거의 유일한 친구예요 서울에 올라와서 왜냐면 친구들이 생겼을 때도 다 형들이었고 그렇게 생각해 보니, 앞으로는 또 뭐 친구 생기고 할 순 있겠지만 어쨌든 내 동갑내기 친구가 친구랑 이런 스토리와 이런 추억이 있는 친구는 아마 태형이가 앞으로도 거의 유일하겠죠

So as far as same-age chingu go... In a sense, when I came here to Seoul to work [V] was my first same-age chingu and, to this day, is my only chingu since I came to Seoul Because when I made chingu they were all hyungs So from that perspective, I might have more chingu in the future But in any case, as for same-age chingu, a chingu that I share these stories and memories with Taehyung will probably continue to be the only one

So this is the part that caused all this confusion. Here Jimin uses chingu in two different ways. The first one is to specifically mean same-age friend, and the second is to mean just friend in general, as in a person you have a friendship with. I marked the first usage in red and the second usage in blue. If Jimin used the word chingu just in the second meaning, this whole speech would make absolutely no sense. Jimin has become friends with many people outside of BTS, including people that are older than him, but he's saying that V has a special place in his life namely because they're of the same age.

Being of the same age with someone else is special in Korea. It means you can be comfortable with that person from the get go without regards to societal rules imposed by the age hierarchy. Your horizontal interpersonal distance can be either far or close, but there is literally no vertical distance. You are on the same level as them, you're equals. It's expected that, in a group of people of varying ages, you would make friends with the person that's the same age as you are before anyone else, because of that lack of vertical distance and barrier of formalities.

Which is why the next part stood out so much.

(talking about age not being an important factor in cultivating friendships)

"동갑내기 친구가 짱이죠" 사실, 사실 뭐 제가 나이를 많이 먹은 것도 아니고 제가 오래 살아 온 것도 아니고 인생 선배들한테 막 이렇게 떠들 얘기는 아니지만 나이는 별로 중요하지 않은 것 같아요 나이는 별로 안 중요해요 이게 요즘에 제가 느끼는 거는 저보다 나이가 많은 사람들도 다 너무 생각하는 것도 되게 영하고 뭐라 해야 되지, 대화가 너무 자연스럽다 해야 되나 그래서 막 제 친구 중에는 열몇살 차이 나는 친구도 있고 그렇거든요 그냥 말 놓고. 예. 저는 그런 친구가 있어요 전화해서 형 빨리 오라고. 아 조용히 하라고. 이런 친구가 저는 있어요. 그래서 저는 나이는 별로 중요한 것 같지 않아요.

"Same-age friends are the best" (*a fan's chat message) Well, I mean I'm not that old, I haven't lived that long So it's not something I can go on about in front of elders (*meaning, elder people might think it's quite forward of him to say this in front of them) But I don't think age is that important Age isn't really important These days, I feel like People who are older than me all think very young And, how should I put this, like the conversation flows so naturally So among my chingu, there's even a chingu who is more than ten years older than me The kind of chingu that I talk informally to He's a chingu that I can call and be like, hey hyung hurry up, or like, be quiet (*) So I don't think age is really all that important.

(*considering the tone Jimin was speaking in, you can take it as an equivalent to: Hyung, get your ass here right now and oh shut up.)

Here, chingu was used to denote friend, as in, you know, just friend.

Note how Jimin said, among his chingu there's one that's 10+ years older than him. He is *categorizing* this person as a friend. Because he's trying to make a point about how age can be irrelevant in building friendships, he doesn't refer to this individual as 'a hyung I know (아는 형)' or 'a close hyung (친한 형)'. He's trying to emphasize the friendship aspect, and not the age difference, in his choice of words. It's extremely likely that in most situations where he has to tell other people about this person in his private life he would refer to him as 'a close hyung' (if those who are listening don't know this person) or 'X [insert name]-hyung' (if they all know him). Not friend/chingu.

So, to answer your question:

> Jimin doesn't need to call Jungkook his chingu, either to him or to other people. They are already bandmates and close hyung and dongsaeng and everyone knows about it. Close hyung and dongsaeng fall under the umbrella of 'friend'. If no one knew who they were and what kind of relationship they had, and Jimin had to talk about JK without giving any specifics about his gender/age/etc, he might refer to JK as chingu. But it's not a scenario that's likely to happen.

How can Jimin as a dongsaeng call his outside BTS older friends friends but can't call another dongsaeng in another group of friends friend?

When I said Jimin wouldn't call Jungkook his friend/chingu even if they were't in a non-platonic relationship or in the same band, it's because between Koreans age always comes first when establishing a relationship. JK will forever be a dongsaeng to Jimin and Jimin will forever be a hyung to JK regardless of how their relationship status changes. I repeat, having a friendship with someone, categorizing a person as a chingu, and naming them chingu are all separate things for Koreans. You can name a person as your chingu even if you don't have a close friendship with them. You can be friends with someone but rarely refer to them as chingu.

Finally, a tip for anyone out there who's interested in learning Korean - since chingu is such a loaded word, we often use the term chinhan sayi (친한 사이) or just the adjective chinhada (친하다) to describe a friendly/close relationship with another person. See example below.

I'm friends with that sunbae

-> 그 선배랑 친한 사이예요. [Geu sunbaerang chinhan sayiyeyo]

(Literal translation: I have a close relationship with that sunbae.)

-> 그 선배랑 친해요. [Geu sunbaerang chinhaeyo]

반말 (INFORMAL) vs 존댓말 (FORMAL)

There are four factors which you must consider in determining which level of speech to use.

1. Difference in Age between Speaker and Listener.

If all else is equal, your age relative to the listener will determine the level of speech to use. If you are in your twenties and start a conversation with an elderly Korean man, you are the 후배 (junior) and he is the 선배 (senior). You will address him using 존댓말 (formal) and he may address you using 반말 (informal). But the age difference does not need to be large. If you meet someone for the first time and learn that they are one year older than you, then you should definitely be using 존댓말 (formal) when you speak to them. And it’s perfectly acceptable for the person you just met to use 반말 (informal) with you, if they choose.

Koreans are obsessed with people’s age, and for good reason! It is such an important part of establishing conversational tone. This is why Koreans will almost always ask you how old you are when you first meet. It’s a common question that’s built into normal introductions. Sometimes it takes different forms, though. One person may come right out and ask you for your age. Others will ask what year you graduated high school or college. Koreans have nearly turned this into an art form — with a million clever variations of questions that only serve to determine the listener’s age.

2. Difference in Social Status between Speaker and Listener.

If all else is equal, your social status relative to the listener will determine the level of speech to use. Imagine you’ve been working for a Korean company for the past four years. If you are introduced to someone who is higher in rank or job title than you are, then you are the 후배 (junior) and the other person is your 선배 (senior). If you’re both the same rank in the company but he joined the company one year after you, then you would be the 선배 (senior) and he would be your 후배 (junior).

▪ What if you are higher ranking than the listener but he is clearly much older than you? What then?

You should probably both be using 존댓말 (formal) until you mutually agree to drop the formal endings (반말).

▪ What if you work for different companies with entirely different organizational structures? Who’s higher ranking? Don’t know? Well, then let’s find out who’s older!

3. Psychological Distance between Speaker and Listener.

This is a little trickier to explain. This axis ranges from ‘Complete Stranger’ at one end all the way up to things like best friends, intimate lovers, and family members at the other. This is essentially how “close” you and the listener are. And it can completely trump the age and social status factors already discussed.

Example:

I once met a young lady who owned a tiny little coffee shop in Seoul. She was in her twenties and I was in my mid-thirties. But we had mutual interests and soon became good friends. It wasn’t long before we were speaking to one another in 반말 (informal). I was older than her, so if we hadn’t been close, she should have been using 존댓말 (formal) with me. I, being older, had a slightly more established and traditional career, so my social status would have also demanded that she address me with 존댓말 (formal). However, once we became friends that changes. Friends don’t speak to one another in 존댓말 (formal). Work colleagues do. Acquaintances do. But not friends. Friends use 반말 (informal).

Level of speech in Korean is such a strong indicator of psychological closeness that it is, literally, a precursor to becoming friends. If I had never invited my new friend to drop the formal ending when she spoke to me, we wouldn’t have become friends at all. Likewise, if I had continued to address her using formal speech, it would have been a clear indicator that I intended to keep a certain measure of psychological distance between us. So, not only does the level of speech indicate the psychological distance between speaker and listener, it can also determine it.

4. Environment in which the Conversation Takes Place.

Just as psychological distance can override considerations of age and social status, the environment where the conversation takes place can make the appropriate level of speech rise or fall. Consider the example above of my friend in her early twenties, me in my mid-twenties. Even though we were friends and completely comfortable using 반말 (informal) with one another, there are many situations where it would be inappropriate to do so. As I mentioned, she owned a coffee shop and I would often stop in from time to time, sometimes bringing along work colleagues or other friends who are roughly the same age as I am. In this situation it would be inappropriate for her to walk up and address me using 반말 (informal). In the context of this situation, she was the service provider and I was the customer. Furthermore, the fact that I was with several others who were also older than her dictated that she use 존댓말 (formal) in this situation.

Now, imagine that one day we decide to meet at a nearby department store. I arrive to find that she is finishing up something else with several of her friends — all of whom are younger than I am. You might think that because she is younger, and because I could be considered socially higher in status, that it would be perfectly acceptable to use 반말 (informal) with her in this situation. I mean, we’re really good friends who use 반말 (informal) all the time, so what’s the problem? The problem is the context of the conversation. Imagine what her friends would think about an older guy walking up and speaking to her in such a blunt or intimate manner. It would probably imply a much closer relationship which was not the case. Instead, the polite thing would be to use 존댓말 (formal) while her friends were present and then shift down into 반말 (informal) once it was just me and her again.

The Gallifrey High AU That No One Needed But Here It Is Anyway

SO JUST A DISCLAIMER I WAS HANGING OUT WITH @coordinatorromana AND THEY WERE WEARING A GALLIFREY ACADEMY SHIRT UNDER THEIR GALLIFREY ACADEMY JACKET AND THIS AU LITERALLY STARTED WITH ME SAYING THAT THEY LOOKED LIKE A VARSITY ATHLETE FOR GALLIFREY HIGH SO IT’S THEIR FAULT NOT MINE

The year is 2XXX. Korean society has evolved so far that our ID schematics have been condensed into chips taking the shape of normal contact lenses. These ID lenses are given to children and are changed according to their growth needs. When their eyes stop changing a permanent lens is fixed onto one of their eyes, thus making ID cards and numbers obsolete. However, a growing number of reports are surfacing of chips becoming scrambled or dislodged after injuries, accidents, and other incidents. What happened to Leela Sae’s eyes to make her unidentifiable? In this new technological age spurred by chaebol conglomerates, whose family will come out on top? Will Korea’s economy be torn asunder in the rumbling threat of an economic war?

I imagined 갈리프레이 고등학교, 갈고 for short (Gallifrey High School, “Galgo” or “Sharpening” for short) as a Special High School, a fancy private high school for students whose parents are affiliated with conglomerates, diplomats, politicians, all kinds of important people. So basically like an international school minus the white people and with only three years in high school: Korean high schools split the twelve grades 6-3-3 as opposed to 5-3-4 as is common in America. (Yes this does mean that I headcanon the entire cast as Korean in this AU). Usually in these private schools, students from lower income families with certain professions (lower level civil servants/bureaucrats, small business owners, etc.) have access to certain degrees of financial aid that depend on how well the student does in school. In some rare cases, a very low income and potentially first generation student can gain a full scholarship for exceptional talent.

This is how we first meet Leela (새리라, Leela Sae), a seventeen-year-old cast out into the world who uses a fake last name for Reasons. She’s always wanted to be free as a bird and bird in Korean is 새 so she chose it as a new last name. She gains admission to Gallifrey High by winning a taekwondo tournament hosted by the conglomerate owned by Romana’s family, the 나라 (Na-Ra, “Nation”) corporation. The tournament was meant to scout new muscle to work as guard staff for Na-Ra with the promise of job security and a scholarship to 갈고 for the youth division. Because Romana is the heir apparent of the corporation, she is of course present at the tournament and as the newly-elected student body president she welcomes Leela to the school. Leela transfers to Gallifrey High as a second year, the same year as Romana.

Romana (나루마, Ruma Na) is the sole child of the ruling Na family, making her heir apparent to the corporation from the age of fifteen. She excels in school, consistently ranking first in her class, but finds her true passions lie in leading the school to victory and prosperity in all aspects of student life. However, recent tensions between conglomerates and within her own family’s corporation have kicked off power struggles in the Korean market as well as in school. A separate faction led by Darkel, the heiress to Kim and Co., a competing conglomerate and the Na corporation’s closest rival and bitterest enemy.

Darkel (김다루, Daru Kim), another second year and the Student Body Vice President, has consistently scored just below Romana in rankings, but despite her sharp intellect her unpopularity and refusal to listen to her peers made her lose the opportunity to hold power over the entire school, an opportunity she thought should be rightfully hers. As such, she gathered all the students whose families worked with or for her and rallied them against Romana and the Na-Ra corporation. This started a kind of turf war in the high school as well as starting an economic meltdown of global proportions as Na-Ra and Kim and Co. slashed prices, salaries, everything to compete against each other, resulting in the near-total collapse of the Korean economy.

As the war rages on, Darkel seeks out Narvin, the Student Body Treasurer and lures him to her side of the fight, intending to bankrupt his family’s large pharmaceutical company later to monopolize more power over the school and the economy.

Narvin (빈나라, Nara Bin, play on words with “empty nation” and also yes matching to one of the conglomerates guess which) is the Treasurer and is very stingy with club budgets despite only being a second year, but that’s what he likes so much about that work: He could know and control the money flow of the entire school. Although he starts out working with Darkel, when he discovers Darkel’s plan, he crosses sides to join Romana, despite his reservations about her and the transfer student she always hung around. Now, he doesn’t care to admit it but he cares deeply about Romana and Leela in the aftermath of the Sul War. Narvin is a huge nerd who is on the math team and participates regularly in the physics Olympiad.

On the other hand, Brax (시보락, Borak Si) seeks to gain more power than his position as Secretary of the Student Body by aligning himself and his family’s company with Romana. As a third year, this year is his last chance to try for student body president and he is growing more desperate. Darkel considers him a prime threat as a key player in this war due to his parents’ microchip development and manufacturing company, Si Sees Ltd. This emphasis on technological advancement to tear the other side apart led to the coining of this economic war the Sul War, for “Kisul”, meaning “technology.”

Wynter (태위영, Wi-Young Tae) is an impressionable first year who looks up to Romana and considers her his 선배. His family is among the first to go bankrupt when the falling cost of iron makes his family’s ironworks company go under and he leaves the country to pay off his debt to loan sharks.

Andred (뢰안도, Ando Rae), a second year who took interest in Leela, the new transfer student, as he was also a recipient of financial aid as the son of a lower ranking bureaucrat. He found Leela’s blunt language and unconventional wisdom charming and they dated for a while until Leela saw that Andred was just like all the other spoiled asshole brats at this entitled school and left him. Soon afterward, Andred was expelled for beating another student into unconsciousness despite multiple suspensions and warnings from similar behavior.

Matthias (아마디, Madi A, first name means “words”), was a quiet second year student but his family seemed to be the only one really staying afloat as he kept to himself and was often ignored by the likes of Darkel and Romana. However, when he was noticed he was generally well liked and as the son of a high ranking politician he knew how the game worked even if he chose not to play. Until now. Sensing a weakness in both Romana and Darkel, Matthias seized an opportunity to make himself student body president with the support of weary and newly broke students and the promise of rebuilding Korea’s techno-economic infrastructure.

The Doctor (닥터, Doctor), is a truant. No one knows what year he’s in, only that he’s smart but he pops in and out as he pleases and the teachers can only sigh and shake their heads at him because heaven knows they’ve tried yelling, punishing, locking up, it didn’t seem to matter to him.

Valyes is taking his second year a second time because he failed out the year before. Despite knowing how the school works and how the political game is played he lacks the common sense and patience to use what he knows effectively. (Yes I realize I’m being way too nice but I’m trying to get something of a consistent tone here ;w; )

Other minor commanders and such are class reps in the student council.

I haven’t met Ace yet where I’m up to (haven’t started season 6 yet) but according to Alex’s description my version of Ace is a delinquent with constantly dyed hair who could use the nearest object to smash your head in but would rather shatter your kneecaps and let Leela finish you off.

Which seniors does your idol have a strong relationship with?

There’s not really many seniors in the industry left for Sooyoung. The group she’s in has existed for the past decade, and there’s few groups and idols who’ve held up this long. She’s close to the sunbaes within her company (i.e. BoA, TVXQ and Super Junior), but most idols she’s friendly with have quit the trade by now.

Which seniors are they acquaintances with? Explain each relationship, how it formed, and what it’s like.

Most of her current sunbaes are those she’s met through acting. She’s been doing acting for a few years now, but she gets the opportunity to do her acting thing with well-established names within the trade. She’s had her first acting role back in 2008, but she never really counted that as one, and since her frequent appearance on dramas over the last few years, she’s found some people she considers close. The relationships mostly are text-based, as the busy schedules tend to keep them from meeting up.

Hoobae (후배, 後輩) refers to people with less experience. Generally, hoobaes have to use jondaetma l(존댓말, honorific language) to sunbaes, meaning they have to speak very politely and treat them with respect.

How does your muse act with their juniors?

Sooyoung tries to be the fun unnie / noona who just generally makes people feel comfortable around her. She’s not the type to get really offended if people don’t address her formally, she has no speaking ground as she’s known for never addressing people older than her with oppa and unnie. She’s also the type to spoil them when she gets close enough to them, going out of her way to spend time with them where she can. She’s incredibly supportive, even if she’s not always the one to show her support openly.

Which juniors are your muse close with? Try to describe their relationship as best as you can.

Although there’s many people Sooyoung at least considers close, one of the main people she simply adores would be Red Velvet’s Seulgi. She loves all members of the girl group, as well as the other juniors within her company (and she’s spoken out about liking T-ARA, TWICE and a few other groups before), but Seulgi holds a special place in her heart. The main reason for that is that Sooyoung sees a lot of herself reflected in the younger. They share a birthday, Seulgi has trained with SM Entertainment for seven years, and so had Sooyoung. Whenever the older idol would sense Seulgi going through a hard time, she’d make a point of it to go out and cheer the younger up. She knows firsthand how hard it can be to be training for nearly a decade, never quite having the comfort of knowing your future, and she wanted to do everything she could to keep Seulgi from feeling too bad about anything, as Seulgi is a lot more talented than she is herself. Even now, after Seulgi has established her position in the Korean entertainment industry with Red Velvet, Sooyoung still likes to check in with her every once in a while to make sure she’s being treated the way she should be.

이사 Analysis

this is the analysis for bangtan’s 3rd mini album, 화양연화 pt.1, 8th track, 이사 ( Move ).

i will be analysing several components - music and lyrics

disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree. do let me know your thoughts in my ask box

overall: bangtan has this song that actually means ‘move’ because this is the first time that they actually moved their dorms to a bigger one since debut and it means a lot to them - sort of like the first step to becoming something bigger considering bighit could afford to move them to bigger dorms with bangtan’s success - this song being memorable for all of them.

music: so the song starts off with some synths, synths that actually haven’t been heard before. there’s something modern-sounding about all of them. not to mention how the percussion is already present from the very beginning. and one could hear that there’s this higher pitch voice which could be heard inside which could be heard clearly at 0:08. if im not wrong, the snare drum is very prominent here. there is also the sound of an electric guitar in here though it’s not those very high pitch chords but more of a subtle one - one that sounds as if it belongs in a jazz cafe to be honest, the chords sounding very mellow. also, the intro for this song is quite long, having 23 seconds worth of just the beat going on so as to prep the song.

namjoon then comes in straight away with ‘ayo suga’ at 0:23 with the beat being the same and namjoon filling all the gaps in between his lyrics with adlibs. then at 0:36; there’s a subtle change in the song as namjoon changes his style of rapping slightly as he goes slower but reverts back to his pri final style of rapping at 0:43. this shows how he can manipulate the beat very well to his liking. there is that soft sigh at 0:54 and then it moves on to namjoon’s next part of his rap at 1:00 as he slows down his rapping. then at 1:10 one could hear this shimmering synth again as it goes on to the chorus at 1:12 with taehyung. what’s interesting is that there is no prechorus here but rather an elongated part of namjoon’s rap.

at this juncture, the percussion is back in full force and that the high-pitch sounds are back again underlying this whole part. then at 1:25, one could hear some of jungkook’s vocals harmonizing with taehyung such as in 1:31 yet taehyung is more dominant in this part.

then hoseok preps the listeners for his part by adding the adlib ‘woah’ at 1:34 before he begins his own rap verse which is at full force at 1:37 onwards. here, hoseok’s style of rapping is really laidback, only ensuring he is enunciating the words etc eg. 1:51 the beat here is the same as namjoon’s - largely driven by the bass and drums. he even knows how to play with the beat as seen in 1:56-1:57, deliberately elongating his words. again his adlib of ‘woah’ at 2:13 could be heard.

then the chorus comes in full swing at 2:25 with seokjin this time round but again with jungkook harmonizing with him which could be heard at 2:34. and then seokjin ends his part which would lead to yoongi’s rap at 2:48 which is surprisingly interesting.

because at yoongi’s rap, the beat seems to have simmered down to almost nothing but once he begins rapping did the beat come back in a crescendo style. as he begins his rap, one could hear this very mild percussion - a muffled drum being hit at every 1st count yet yoongi takes his time to even throw in some adlibs as he wishes inside his own intro of his rap. only at 2:56 onwards did the drum becomes slightly more frequent. from 2:55 onwards did the guitar chords come in. then at 2:59, yoongi is rapping at full force, his words being the best enunciated, I like his dictation here. but specially from 3:11 onwards, he picked up the pace of his rapping. and one could hear his exasperation at 3:22-3:24. interestingly at 3:30, he seemed to have calm down as his rapping has gotten much slower as he wraps up his part, even adding a dramatic pause at 3:33 before he resumes to wrap up his part.

then it moves on to the chorus at 3:35 with jimin and some of seokjin’s vocals underlying, even with jungkook. but in reality, nothing much has changed in the beat.

but once it moved on to 4:00, it went to the coda with jungkook inside as he riffs and does adlibs at this juncture, taking his time to shine as the beat takes a backseat. then at 4:24, namjoon comes back in but to deliver a monologue, his thoughts on moving etc with the beat being his BGM and jungkook also harmonizing at this juncture. i like how namjoon puts in this short speech, some kind of a reminder and a gist of the song to be honest. and with that the song ends with 4 seconds of silence.

lyrics: while listening to the song, and from the title, people would naturally assume that bangtan was just merely talking abut moving dorms, but actually it was more than that. to bangtan, moving to bigger dorms was one thing but it also meant that they are moving towards a path of success evidently seen in the chorus

also, one could see how much more in depth the rap lyrics are this time round, how there are more parts being allocated to the rap rather than vocals and how the rap lyrics tell a story.

so here namjoon talks about many things, one would know that he and yoongi were the oldest mates living together from the beginning so i guess when they moved dorms, it felt even more nostalgic for them.

not to mention, before bangtan even debuted, there were also other trainees who trained with bangtan but didnt make it in the end, hence the 9 trainees who shared a rather small dorm.

even here, namjoon talks about how they were so scared of the future, and how uncertain they were that their group would survive in such a competitive industry

he even talks about how the dorms are full of memories, both good and bad and even thanking at it at the end

yoongi also mentions how his life was fixed on paying rent and getting by with the down payment etc. i like how he mentions all these jargons about houses and the last few lines of his rap, he mentions how he wants to stop moving around as much etc so i guess he wants to be stable etc

last thoughts: overall, this may be the least favourite song out of the whole albums, theres nothing wrong with it, but it’s not my cup of tea. regardless, i think bangtan has been doing well in this album to explore more different styles of songs - a nice refreshing style of bangtan to consider

sunbae (선배, 先輩) is a word that refers to people with more experience (at work, school, etc)

which seniors does your idol have a strong relationship with?

2PM, JYP, BTS

which seniors are they acquaintances with? explain each relationship, how it formed, and what it’s like.

yugyeom is very close friends with many of the 2PM members, many of whom he respects deeply. their bond happened because they share the same company - thus it was natural for them to get more acquainted with each other. he looks up to them greatly.

another senior group that he’s really close to is BTS, he is specifically close to one of the members (jeongguk) as they share the same age. he views them as amazing artists, and a group that he can look up to and learn from.

hoobae (후배, 後輩) refers to people with less experience. generally, hoobaes have to use jondaetma l(존댓말, honorific language) to sunbaes, meaning they have to speak very politely and treat them with respect.

how does your muse act with their juniors?

with his juniors, he is the same as he would be with his sunbae’s. he is respectful, but playful at the same time. he knows there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed no matter what the standing is.

which juniors are your muse close with? try to describe their relationship as best as you can.

twice, monsta x, astro, seventeen, x1 - those are a few of the junior groups that have members he is extremely closed to. although relationships with each of them vary, the one thing that can be shared in common is the sense of respect he still holds for his juniors. he never looks down on them, and wants to do as much as possible to cheer for them, and be there not just as a mentor but as a friend.
