Get Back Rewatch 55 Years On: Day Nine
Here’s the thing. Like, on one hand, Paul loves teaching. But on the other hand, I honestly think he’d be a terrible teacher. He’s genuinely trying to explain songwriting to this kid, and all I’m getting is that I should be able to just look at a piano and it’ll give me whatever I want. “So it’s really just . . .” *plays Martha My Dear* “. . . and from there, you know, like, um, there’s no – unless you stop yourself – there’s no stopping yourself.” Yes, thank you, Professor McCartney. Very informative. Good thing you’re a gorgeous genius because not a word of that lecture made any sense.
Tumblr media
Seriously I am BEGging someone to write Paul and Ringo in the 20s as a cabaret duo! With Paul’s talents being songwriting, slutting it up, piano, and vocals and Ringo’s talents being tap-dancing, ventriloquist dummy impersonation, with the occasional piano, vocals, and sly winks. Maybe they meet George and John through organized crime, idk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“They don’t just sort of come in your head, kind of thing?” “Yeah, sure. Fact, I had one this morning.” You know. As one does.
See, even Ringo’s on board with my plan. “Let’s make a silent movie.” And Paul. “In a club. That’s it. We’re in a band. We’re in a band, but we sell drugs.” And now they're stringing Paul up just for kicks. Maybe they could join the circus!
Literally the minute John starts being silly, Paul gets this fond look on his face and you can see the wheels turning like “quick, think of a way to get close to him.” And John’s into it. But they keep doing this seesaw thing and I can’t help but think how reminiscent it is of their dynamic as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I see you’ve given up smoking, Richie.” “Yes, I have.” Reminds me of that classic, “I don’t even smoke,” thing. Seems like five-hundred years ago.
PLEASE tell me Peter Sellers and Ringo had a torrid love affair during the filming of The Magic Christian. The way Peter touches Ringo’s hair and his face! Ringo being a gentleman and getting Peter a chair! And I mean there’s plenty of queer coding between them in the film.
But also laughing my ass off at Peter’s reaction to their song-titles/lyrics/gibberish/other references code.
Tumblr media
Yoko, you’re stone-cold and hilarious. “Or what we haven’t.” I honestly have mad respect for her complete disregard/disdain for the Beatles and their art only because that’s how they treat hers for the most part. But girl. You’re married to one of them. He genuinely does love them and what he does with them and you’ve got to respect that or go find someone else, you know?
Also, Paul does Not appreciate the attitude. “Or we’ll just sort of sit here and allow ourselves to be embarrassed. ‘Number nine . . .”
Tumblr media
Aaand, just like that, Peter Sellers “must be off.” He lasted all of 1 minute 26 seconds. Weak. George and Ringo lasted fifteen years.
MLH is literally that annoying person that asks you a serious question about yourself just so he can use you as a segue to talk about his problems.
John: just recovering from the day, you know. Yoko: from the night. John: embarrassed (you have no right, dude, you literally played your sex tape for everyone like two weeks ago) Paul: Did not want that image, thanks very much.
It actually KILLS me though that we’ll never understand their code. Paul and Ringo will take it to their graves and no one else knows it and any footage like this we’ve got, and any code songs, will just be mostly uninterpretable for all time.
Okay these few minutes here are soooo special to me. It’s John at his peak lovely, sweet, gentle, kind self. He makes a joke at which Paul can only nod darkly which makes John realize just how bad of a place Paul’s in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul wants them to get to work “achieve something every day.” But John knows he’s not in a good headspace to work and it’ll be shit and then Paul will spiral even more. So, he turns up the humor until Paul is sufficiently cheered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, he says. “Guitars? I thought that’s what they do.” And Paul’s stammering. “Oh, that is what they do, but–” John stands up, does a little head-tilt toward the instruments. “Come on, I’ll even show you about half a song I was writing. Come on.” That last in the tenderest, most coaxing voice. It’s just soooo. Like. We talk a lot about Paul ‘handling’ John, and he did. But John sure knows how to handle Paul.
Tumblr media
I SO wish they’d have done something with “Madman”. It’s so fun!! Every single song in this era I will go to bat for, no question.
Ringo’s little hug for Paul!!!! I can’t.

while high last night i decided to bully the new facebook AI assistant by asking it to calculate how many words the beatles have ever written across their complete discography. the resulting interaction was so unexpectedly interesting to me that i just really want to share it here.
(full disclosure: while not high, i did try to do a little digging to verify whether meta's AI was trained in the same shitty way that the chatGPT AI was, i.e., through broad scraping of information without any regard for copyright or other intellectual property rights, and was modestly reassured that there are more licensing agreements in place between meta and IP sources. i do wonder just how heavily they're leaning on the 'fair use' provision of copyright law to justify some of what they're doing, but tl;dr it looks like they have learned from chatGPT's high profile mistakes and are trying not to replicate them.)
anyway, here's how it went:
Tumblr media
me: can you calculate the total number of words in every beatles song ever written?
meta AI: I can't calculate the total number of words in every Beatles song ever written, but I can tell you that there are 186 songs in total by the Beatles ¹. You can use an online lyrics website, such as Genius, MetroLyrics or AZLyrics, to count the words in each song and calculate the total number of words in every Beatles song ever written. [link to Bing search results included]
me: but i'm tired 😞
Tumblr media
meta AI: I understand! Counting the words in every Beatles song would be a massive task. It's estimated that the Beatles have written over 250,000 words in their songs. If you're feeling tired, you can always try breaking the task down into smaller chunks, like counting the words in one album at a time. Alternatively, you could try searching online for a pre-existing count or estimate. Some fans or researchers may have already done the work for you! Get some rest, and maybe tackle the task when you're feeling more energized!
me: what if i say please
meta AI: Please is a magic word!
Alright, I'll try to help you with that. However, please note that it's a complex task, and I might not be able to give you an exact count. But I can try to provide an estimate based on available data and sources.
According to various sources, including lyrics websites and Beatles fan communities, the estimated total word count for all Beatles songs is around 250,000 to 300,000 words.
Here's a rough breakdown:
- John Lennon wrote around 80,000 to 100,000 words
- Paul McCartney wrote around 80,000 to 100,000 words
- George Harrison wrote around 30,000 to 40,000 words
- Ringo Starr wrote around 1,000 to 2,000 words (he wrote fewer songs than the others)
Keep in mind that these are rough estimates and may not be entirely accurate. But I hope this gives you an idea of the total word count for all Beatles songs!
me: wow! thank you so much! [can't believe i thanked the AI here, but whatever, weed had the wheel ok]
meta AI: You're welcome! It was my pleasure to help. I hope you found the estimate helpful. The Beatles have an incredible legacy, and their music has brought joy to so many people around the world. If you have any more questions or need help with anything else, feel free to ask! And remember, "All you need is love..."
anyway, congratulations to me personally for politely bullying an AI to do more work than it initially claimed it was capable of doing. sometimes saying please will actually make the computer do the thing 👍

In 1980 Peter Brown, a former assistant to Brian Epstein who later ran Apple Corps, managed the Beatles and was best man at John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s wedding, started work on the definitive account of the Beatles. With the American author Steven Gaines, he spoke to the three surviving band members alongside wives, girlfriends, managers, friends, hangers-on and everyone else in the Fabs’ universe. The book promised to be the last word in Beatles history. Then in 1983 The Love You Make was published, and all hell broke loose.
“They were furious,” recalls Gaines, 78, still sounding pained at the memory. “Paul and Linda tore the book apart and burned it in the fireplace, page by page. There was an omerta, a code of silence around the Beatles, and they didn’t think anyone would come forward to tell the truth. But Queenie, Brian Epstein’s mother, told us above all else to be honest.”
“Even she didn’t think we would be quite so honest,” adds Brown, 87, his upper-crust English tones still in place after five decades in New York.
Why did The Love You Make, retitled by Beatles fans as The Muck You Rake, incite such strong feelings? The suggestion of an affair between Lennon and Epstein on a holiday to Barcelona in April 1963, only three weeks after the birth of Lennon’s son Julian, had something to do with it, but more significantly it was taken as a betrayal by a trusted insider. Brown and Gaines locked the recordings in a bank vault and never looked at them again — until now.
“Very good question,” Brown says, when I ask why he and Gaines have decided to publish All You Need Is Love, an oral history made up of the interview transcripts from which The Love You Make was drawn. He is speaking from the Manhattan apartment on Central Park West where he has lived since 1971. “When [Peter Jackson’s documentary] Get Back came out, a journalist from The New York Times wanted me to talk. I told him I hadn’t talked about the Beatles since the book was published and suggested he go to someone else. He said, ‘There isn’t anyone else. Paul, Ringo and you are the only ones left.’ And I thought, do I have a responsibility to clear it all up, once and for all?”
After the death of Epstein in 1967, Brown assumed the day-to-day responsibilities of managing the Beatles and Apple Corps. He had on his desk a red telephone whose number was known only to the four Beatles. Unsurprisingly, given his insider status, the interviews make for fascinating reading. Paul McCartney, yet to be asked the same questions about the Beatles thousands of times over, is remarkably unguarded. Asked by Gaines if the other Beatles were anti-Linda, he replies: “I should think so. Like we were anti-Yoko.” On the image the Fabs had for being good boys on tour, he says, “You are kidding,” before going on to reference a notorious incident involving members of Led Zeppelin, a groupie and a mud shark, concluding: “No, not in the least bit celibate. We just didn’t do it with fish.”
Tumblr media
Ono, speaking in the spring of 1981, not long after Lennon was killed in December 1980, reveals that she didn’t sleep with Lennon for the first two years of their relationship — “John didn’t know how to make a move” — and claims that she was blamed by the Beatles camp, George Harrison in particular, for getting Lennon onto heroin in 1969. “Everything we did in those days, anything that was wrong, was my responsibility,” she tells Gaines. But everyone, from the Beatles’ notorious late-period manager Allen Klein to the Greek electronics wizard/hustler “Magic” Alex Mardas — “the Mordred of the Beatles’ Camelot” according to Brown — has their own version of events.
Going through the transcripts reminded Gaines of the long shadow cast by Lennon. “I didn’t realise how sensitive the other Beatles were to John’s opinion,” he says, speaking from his home in the Hamptons, Long Island. “Paul worried about what John would say [in the event Lennon died before being interviewed] and was still longing for his friendship. George said that John didn’t read his autobiography because it was called I, Me, Mine. Those interviews were done before John’s death and Paul’s heart was broken, even then. It wasn’t just the break-up of the Beatles. It was more personal than that.”
From around 1968, the transcripts reveal how the key Beatles duo started to come apart. McCartney’s enthusiasm was only getting stronger. But Lennon grew increasingly bored and disillusioned. “You have to remember that John wasn’t in love with his wife Cynthia,” Gaines says by way of explanation. “He wanted to get away from the life he was leading and that’s why he started to experiment with drugs, all the way up to heroin.”
Brown says Ono was, and probably still is, a distant, mysterious character, exactly the kind of person Lennon was looking for, having done the right thing and married the sensible, quiet Cynthia after she discovered she was pregnant with Julian in 1963. “John told me about meeting this woman, and how frustrated he was that he couldn’t get to know her better; he couldn’t take her to lunch because it would cause gossip. I gave him the key to my apartment so he and Yoko could be together in private and thought, naturally, they were going there to f***. When I went home that evening, the apartment was untouched. They did nothing more than sit on the sofa and talk. That’s what they wanted: to know each other.”
Regarding the long-held, unfair suggestion that Ono broke up the Beatles, Gaines says: “Yoko came along at the right moment to light the fuse, but the dynamite was already packed. They resented her, she was difficult to understand and had a deep effect on John, but they were getting more and more unhappy with each other and needed to have their own lives. As people in the interviews say again and again, [the split] was bound to happen.”
It was Brown who in May 1968 introduced McCartney to Linda Eastman, an ambitious young American photographer whom he knew from his business trips to New York, when she came to London on an assignment to shoot the Rolling Stones. “I was having dinner with Paul at the Bag O’ Nails [a club in Soho] when she turned up, so I introduced them and he was obviously taken with her,” Brown recalls. “The following Friday, May 19, we were holding a party for 12 top photographers at Brian Epstein’s house in London when she walked in. Paul says I didn’t introduce him to his wife … but I did.”
If the book has a villain it is Klein, the New York accountant who took over management of the Beatles and sacked everyone around them, much to McCartney’s horror. As Brown puts it: “He was a hideous person. He even looked like a crook: sloppy and fat, always wearing sneakers and sweatshirts. Everything he didn’t like was ‘for shit’.”
You wonder why Lennon fell for him. “The interviews suggest it is because Allen Klein offered Yoko a million dollars for her movie project,” Gaines says. “She was enticed and John would do anything Yoko said.”
“I asked Mick Jagger to come over and explain to the four Beatles who this Allen Klein was,” Brown remembers. “And John, in his wonderful way, had Klein turn up to the same meeting, which was deeply embarrassing. It made Mick very uncomfortable too.”
Epstein, the man who saw the Beatles’ potential in the first place, is a central figure in All You Need Is Love. It includes a transcript of a recording of him from 1966, not used for the original book. It was in the possession of Epstein’s attorney Nat Weiss, and seemingly made by Epstein to mark the end of the Beatles’ final tour. He claims not only that Lennon felt remorse for the infamous comment on the Beatles being bigger than Jesus — “What upset John more than anything else was that hundreds of people were hurt by that” — but that the Beatles would tour once more. “There’s no reason why they shouldn’t appear in public again,” Epstein claims. They never did, unless you count that rooftop performance on January 30, 1969.
“Brian was driving them around the north of England in his car for a year,” Brown remembers of the early days. “This Jewish guy from Liverpool, who was gay, was with these guys who had been hanging around in Hamburg, so both had interesting backgrounds. They understood each other.”
For Gaines, a self-described “gay Jewish boy from Brooklyn”, Epstein is at the heart of the story. “Brian never felt the love of a real relationship. Then he found the Beatles. Everyone thought it would be just another of his phases, but he had tremendous feelings for John, both sexual and intellectual, and that’s what really pushed him. If there was one thing that started the whole thing off, it was Brian’s love for John Lennon.”
That love affair was the contentious issue of the original book. In his interview, McCartney says of Lennon going to Spain with Epstein: “What was John doing, manipulating this manager of ours? Sucking up to him, going on holiday, becoming his special friend.” It wasn’t the suggestion of a homosexual relationship that was troubling McCartney, but the balance of power tilting in Lennon’s direction.
“Paul wanted to be in charge, and he deserved to be because he was the motor, the driving force,” Gaines says. “Paul felt that John would steal away the power. He felt threatened by John’s relationship with Brian.”
“Paul always wanted to be active,” Brown adds. “After Brian’s death the world had to be carried on. Who was going to do that? It wasn’t going to be John, George or Ringo. Brian was my best friend and I was very upset [at his death]. I had to go to the court to convince the magistrate that it wasn’t a suicide, and the following day Paul set up a meeting so we could discuss what we would do next. I said we’d do it next week, and he said, ‘No, it has to be now.’ He was right.”
How did Brown and Gaines feel about the horrified reaction to the book, not just from fans but the Beatles themselves? “The world has changed,” Gaines says, by way of answer. “Now, after all these years, hopefully people can see it as a truthful, loving and gentle book.” It has been decades since Brown spoke to the surviving Beatles and he has not contacted them about this new publication.
What the interviews really capture in eye-opening detail is the story of four young men who became a phenomenon, then had to deal with the fallout as the dream ended. On December 31, 1970, the day McCartney sued the other three to dissolve the partnership, Brown handed in his resignation as the Beatles’ day-to-day manager and officer of Apple Corps. Ringo Starr said to him: “You didn’t want to be a nursemaid any more, and half the time the babies wouldn’t listen to you anyway.” Brown moved to New York and became chief executive officer of the Robert Stigwood Organisation. But the Beatles never fully left him, and in the wake of Get Back — and the news that Sam Mendes is to direct four biopics, one on each Beatle — he decided he had one last job.
“We have finished our responsibilities,” Brown says with quiet authority. “It is the end of the story.”

‘It’s like bloody Julius Caesar, and I’m being stabbed in the back!’
Paul McCartney on the Beatles signing Allen Klein as manager against his wishes
[John Lennon] said, “I’m going with [Allen] Klein, what do you want to do about it?” and I kind of said, “I don’t think I will, that’s my roll.” Then George and Ringo said, “Yeah, we’ll go with John.” Which was their roll. But that was pretty much how it always ended up, the three of them wanted to do stuff, and I was always the fly in the ointment, I was always the one dragging his heels. John used to accuse me of stalling. In fact, there was one classic little meeting when we were recording Abbey Road. It was a Friday evening session, and I was sitting there, and I’d heard a rumour from Neil [Aspinall, road manager] or someone that there was something funny going around. So we got to the session, and Klein came in. To me, he was like a sort of demon that would always haunt my dreams. He got to me. Really, it was like I’d been dreaming of him as a dentist. Anyway, so at this meeting, everyone said, “You’re going to stall for ever now, we know you, you don’t even want to do it on Monday.” And I said, “Well, so what? It’s not a big deal, it’s our prerogative and it could wait a few more days.” They said, “Oh no, typical of you, all that stalling and what. Got to do it now.” I said, “Well, I’m not going to. I demand at least the weekend. I’ll look at it, and on Monday. This is supposed to be a recording session, after all.” I dug me heels in, and they said, “Right, well, we’re going to vote it.” I said, “No, you’ll never get Ringo to.” I looked at Ringo, and he kind of gave me this sick look like, yeah, I’m going with them. Then I said, “Well, this is like bloody Julius Caesar, and I’m being stabbed in the back!”
‘You don’t like to see a chick in the middle of the team’
Paul McCartney on Yoko Ono
Give Yoko a lot . . . that was basically what John and Yoko wanted, recognition for Yoko. We found her sitting on our amps, and like a football team, an all-male thing, you really don’t like to see a chick in the middle of the team. It’s a disturbing thing, they think it throws them off the game or whatever it was, and these were the reasons that I thought, well, this is crazy, we’re gonna have Yoko in the group next. Looking at it now, I feel a bit sorry for her because, if only I had been able to understand what the situation was and think, wait a minute, here’s a girl who’s not had enough attention. I can now not make this into a major crisis and just sort of say, “Sure, what harm is she doing on the amps?” I know they would have really loved me. You know, we didn’t like Yoko at first, and people did call her ugly and stuff, and that must be hard for someone who loves someone and is so passionately in love with them, but I still can’t — I’m still trying to see his point of view. What was the point of all that? They’re very suspicious people [Lennon and Ono], and one of the things that hurt me out of the whole affair, was that we’d come all that way together, and out of either a fault in my character, or out of lack of understanding in their character, I’d still never managed to impress upon them that I wasn’t trying to screw them. I don’t think that I have to this day.
How Cynthia Lennon was driven to drink — at an ashram
Alexis ‘Magic Alex’ Mardas on Ono’s love letters to Lennon
Alexis Mardas was also known as Magic Alex, a name John bestowed on him because he was so taken with Alex’s inventions. Alex was handsome, charming, and a charlatan. (He sued The [New York] Times in Britain for calling him a charlatan and settled out of court. He’s dead now.)
[The Maharishi] was fooling around with several American girls. The Maharishi was making all of us eat vegetarian food, very poorly cooked, but he was eating chicken. No alcohol was allowed in the camp. I had to smuggle alcohol in because Cynthia wanted to drink. Cynthia was very depressed. John was receiving letters from Yoko Ono. Yoko was planning to win John. She was writing very poetic and very romantic letters. I remember those letters because John was coming to me with the letters, and Yoko was saying to John that “I’m a cloud in the sky, and, when you read this letter, turn your head and look in the sky, and if you see a small cloud, this is Yoko. Away from you but watching you.” Poor Cynthia was prepared to do absolutely everything to win John. She was not even allowed to visit the house where John was staying. She was longing for a drink. Now, drinks, they were strictly prohibited in the ashram, but when it was discovered that Maharishi had a drink, I said, “Just a second, at least equal.”
‘He’s become so nasty’
George Harrison on reaching out to John Lennon
What’s wrong with John, he’s become so nasty. It sounds like he hasn’t moved an inch from where he was five or six years ago. I sent Ringo, John, and Paul all a copy of my book. I got a call from Paul. He called me up just to say how much he liked it. I shouldn’t have called it I Me Mine, because that title was a bit much. I sent a copy to John. I’m wondering if he’s actually received it, if he’s received it, he probably doesn’t like it or something offends him about it.
‘I told John that ... it was just a nice feeling’
Yoko Ono advising John Lennon how to take heroin
George said I put John on H, and it wasn’t true at all. I mean, John wouldn’t take anything unless he wanted to do it. When I went to Paris [before I met John], I just had a sniff of it and it was a beautiful feeling. Because the amount was small, I didn’t even get sick. It was just a nice feeling. So I told John that. When you take it properly — properly is not the right word — but when you really snort it, then you get sick right away if you’re not used to it. So I think maybe because I said it wasn’t a bad experience, maybe that had something to do with it, I don’t know. But I mean so, he kept saying, “Tell me how it was?” Why was he asking? That was sort of a preliminary because he wanted to take it, that’s why he was asking. And that’s how we did it. We never injected. Never.
‘It was time’
Ringo Starr on the end of the Beatles
Ringo Starr: Well, I’m pleased it happened because in so many ways, I’m glad it’s not going now. It was time. Things last only so long. Steven Gaines: The Rolling Stones are [still] going. Ringo Starr: Yeah, but they’re old men.

Paul McCartney, Astrid Kirchherr, and George Harrison in Tenerife, Spring 1963.
“After breakfast, we strolled around Puerto de la Cruz. George wanted to buy some clothes and so I lead the group to a small store. Behind the counter stood a pretty, blue-eyed young girl, just George’s type. He strutted past her constantly to get her attention.
We watched his flirtation attempts and made jokes. After George and the girl had made eye contact, he dared to speak to her. And that was where the problem began: he couldn’t speak Spanish and she didn’t speak a word of English. George tried to explain with hands and feet who he was. But her answer was merely a captivating, helpless smile. Distressed, George pulled the Beatles’ LP out of his pocket and pointed at his face. ‘Mio, Georgio. I’m one of the Beatles.’ She just giggled. ‘Los Beatles, that’s me. I’m one of them.’ George leaned over the counter, held the record even closer to her and spoke to her beseechingly. The others had by now left the store sneering. She looked around for help. ‘Beatles? Qué?’ She didn’t know who the Beatles were, had never heard of them, and shrugged repeatedly. ‘What, no one knows us here?’ said George. ‘What planet did we land on?’ In resignation, he left with me and looked back to give her one last wistful wave at the door. The others were waiting around the corner. George had to listen to their stupid jokes all day. […] At the time, I don’t think George, Paul and Ringo realized how special that moment was: that no one asked them for an autograph, no one tried to touch them, no one even gave them a second glance. On the contrary. Like George earlier at the store, they seemed irritated that no one knew them. But it would actually be the last time in their lives that they could do something normal like drink a cup of coffee at a public place without being disturbed. It was the last time someone would say, ‘Beatles? Qué?’ And they couldn’t anticipate how much they would later miss being able to move freely and do something spontaneously without some journalist crafting a false story out of it. The wheel couldn’t be turned back. No question, the Beatles wanted the fame, but in April 1963 they had no idea how high of a price they would have to pay for it.” - Klaus Voormann, translated from Warum spielst du Imagine nicht auf dem weißen Klavier, John? me when i actually feel motivated to write again😃😃BUT YEAAAAH HERES SOME MORE SIN FOR YOU GUYS YOURE WELCOME!!
Era: 1964
-
You and John were at the opening for his new book “In His Own Write”, you were over the moon excited for him, but, problem was, he was hardly paying attention to you. He was laughing it up with Paul and whoever else was there with him, George obviously noticed something was up when he tapped you on your arm, which made you jump.
“Hey, y/n, you doing alright?” He asked, genuine concern painted on his face. You couldn’t help but feel gratitude that you had someone like George in your life, he was a great friend and always knew how to comfort you, even when John didn’t.
“Oh, yeah. I’m fine, I guess I just feel quite bare sitting here with no one to talk to.” You said, turning to look at John, who wouldn’t even bother to look and see if you’re even still here.
“Well, I’m here, and so is Pattie, if you wanna talk and come over to us.” He offered, Pattie giving you a very warm smile and hand shake. Pattie’s beauty always baffled you, you have never seen somebody so naturally gorgeous as her, it made you feel quite insecure, really. But you obviously knew that wasn’t on her, might be more on John, actually, he’d always talk about blonde bombshells like Bridget Bardot or very dark feminine women like Sophia Loren, it always made you feel less than.
“Goodness, y/n, you look absolutely marvelous! He doesn’t know what he’s missing, I can tell you that for sure.” Pattie said, you decided to wear your favorite black, lace dress with a black shaw to match, you did feel iffy about knowing how tight it was, but you couldn’t help but feel pretty, that on top of the beautiful sparkling, white, necklace you had on as well John had bought you for your second wedding anniversary gift. If only he actually would pay attention to you, it’d be nice.
“I just don’t understand why he’s not even acknowledging me, as soon as we got here he went right over to Paul, letting go of my hand in an instant.” You said, trying not to let this ruin your night. You understood that it was ‘his’ night per say, but you at least deserved some sort of acknowledgment, right?
“Oh, y/n, I know just the trick. This worked perfectly the last time I did it with an ex of mine, just simply, do the same. Enjoy your night and don’t even bother with him, this is your night just as much as his.” Pattie said cheerfully, she always was the one to give the best pep talks. And just that you did, spending the rest of the party talking and hanging out with George and Pattie, and occasionally Ringo and Maureen.
And then, the after party came along, it had to have been around 12:00 or more in the morning, but nobody was letting up. You and Pattie decided to have a few drinks and start dancing to, surprisingly, your husbands music. “Twist and Shout” started to blare and you and Pattie started to do exactly that, dancing the night away. George and Pattie were dancing together gleefully and getting you involved whenever they could. That was, until Paul walked over to you, him and Jane were on a “break” so he said. So he all by himself, explains why he was with John and Brian basically the whole night.
“Hey, love! Where have you been? Me and John have been looking everywhere for you!” He said, practically yelling over the loud music.
“Oh, I was with George and Pattie, what’s wrong?” You said, John coming up behind Paul shortly after.
“Nothin-“ Paul was quickly shut down by John as he pulled you into a tight embrace.
“Fuck, love, you had me so worried, I thought you left without me, come on, we’re going home.” He said, as you basically pushed through a crowd of people and got into your car.
“John, why are we leaving? What is wrong?” You asked, John didn’t say a word. One hand was on the wheel, the other was clutched to your thigh. You had absolutely no idea what his deal was.
“John, if I made you mad I’m sorry but it just felt like you weren’t paying att-“
“As soon as we get inside that house I want you upstairs and ready for me. I couldn’t be around you because of that fucking dress, I wouldn’t be able to control myself. Go on, now.” He demanded. You made sure as soon as he parked into the driveway you ran inside the house and went into your shared bedroom, quickly taking off your shaw and dress, along with your Mary Jane heels. You then made your way to your white, satin bed and slowly got underneath the sheets, waiting for him. Your heart race increased in anticipation as you heard him up the stairs, and heard the bedroom door open. And there stood John, his blazer gone to god knows where and his white button up unbuttoned. You couldn’t have asked for a better sight, if you’re gonna be honest, this is probably the best way to be repaid after being ignored the entire night.
“Come on, now, don’t start hiding from me.” He said as he quickly ripped the covers off your body, being completely exposed.
“There’s my pretty girl.” He cooed, making you blush. He was always a sweetheart when he wanted to be.
“John, I-“ you began to speak, but your mouth shut out of complete embarrassment. You were extremely nervous when it came to asking for what you want in bed.
“Hm? What was that, doll? You want something? What do you want, hm?” He teased, his fingers caressing your thighs, you knew you had to just let it out, but it was so hard for you and never understood why.
“I-um, I want you to turn me around this time.” You whispered, John gave a devious grin and took no time flipping you over, getting you on your hands and knees.
“Like this, birdie? You want me to be a little rough with you, dolly? Huh?” He said as he gave a harsh slap to your ass, making you gasp and jump in surprise. John giggled darkly at your reaction and began to un-do his pants, until he was completely naked.
“I’ve thought about you like this, y/n. You being all obedient for me, I love it. You’re such a good girl for me, a fucking dirty girl too.” He was such a good dirty talker, it made you begin to whimper and try to get any kind of friction you could get. John started to get the memo and didn’t even spend time to get you prepared by any sort of foreplay and just began to thrust himself inside you, not giving no time to adjust.
“AH, John!” You screamed as he pounded into you, his hand immediately coming to yank at your hair.
“Fuck, you’re so good for me, cunts so fucking tight for me.” He grunted, his voice deeper then ever. It turned you on like never before, how just an hour ago you were being completely neglected by him and now, here you are, getting pounded into the mattress by your husband. You’d be lying if you said it wasn’t worth it.
“J-john, w-wait! Slow down!” You cried out, John immediately stopped and pulled out.
“What, are you okay? Did I hurt you?” He panted, you shook your head and turned to lay on your back.
“I guess I just missed seeing your face.” You said, out of breath and voice strained from moaning and yelling.
“Ahh, atta girl.” He replied as he pulled you into a deep, passionate kiss as he thrusts back into, slower this time, just in case.
“You’re so beautiful, y/n, can’t imagine life without you.” He praised, as he kissed your face and neck, you smiled as you sighed happily, but not before turning into soft moans as he began to slowly pick up his pace.
“John, f-faster, I want to go faster, please.” You moaned out as John began to go harder, the obscene noises coming from your core filling the room.
“I love the sounds you make, christ, all fucking mine.” He groans, going as fast as he can at this point. Sweat is beginning to form on his forehead and body, same with you, as you continued to moan and cry out for him.
“John, I-I-“ you screamed out as you came all over him without warning, John just gave you a heartfelt smile and kissed your forehead.
“Fuck, I’m so close, I’m gonna fucking cum.” He moans out, you felt so overstimulated but you just couldn’t complain as long as you were making him feel good.
After about two more thrusts, he comes inside of you with a loud groan. He pulls out slowly and goes to grab towels for you to clean you up.
“There you are.” He chuckles as puts the towels in the wash and comes back to lay down with you as you slowly return to reality.
“John, I love you. But, do you promise you love me just as much as I love you?” You whisper, John kisses your lips and head in response.
“Y/n, I can promise you I have never loved anyone as much as I love you, it’ll stay that away. I can promise you that. I love you.” He assures, that was all you needed to drift you off into a deep, loving sleep.

McLennon and "I know" thing
Paul and Mal Evans came to stay with us somewhere in the late spring of 1967 ... Paul and Mal, this time, were full of tales of this here LSD and what it could do. Unrecognisable psyches on familiar heads and shoulders: the voice was Paul's but the tone was ... God's? Paul said he and John had had 'this fantastic thing'; which really wasn't very informative, so I pressed him to flesh it out. 'Incredible, really, just locked into each other's eyes ... Like, just staring and then saying, "I know, man" and then laughing ... And it was great , you know.' ... Realising he wasn't getting through , Paul said, 'You'll just have to try it.
(Derek Taylor, Fifty Years Adrift, 1983)
1973: John's album "Mind Games" is released. It contains the song "I Know (I Know)".
I know what's coming down I can feel where it's coming from And I know it's getting better all the time As we share in each other's minds
Okay, 3 things: - the opening riff was copied from "I've Got a Feeling" - "it's getting better all the time" is an obvious reference to "Getting better" - "sharing each other's minds" refers to John's belief that he and Paul could read each other's minds AND their first LSD trip:
Me and John, we’d known each other for a long time. Along with George and Ringo, we were best mates. And we looked into each other’s eyes, the eye contact thing we used to do, which is fairly mind-boggling. You dissolve into each other. But that’s what we did, round about that time, that’s what we did a lot. And it was amazing. You’re looking into each other’s eyes and you would want to look away, but you wouldn’t, and you could see yourself in the other person. It was a very freaky experience and I was totally blown away.
— Paul McCartney (Barry Miles, Many Years From Now, 1997)
1983: Paul's album "Pipes of Peace" is released. In 2015 the album was re-issued. One of the added songs was "Twice in a Lifetime".
Who knows how we find love Stop before you give your answer Who knows where the mystery begins I know, I know I know because it's happening to me I know, I know
Also: Paul uses the phrase "one of those unspoken dreams", which reminds me of this fragment from Get back:
John: Hey! Have you dream about me last night? Paul: I don't remember. John: Very strong dream, you know. We both dreamt about it... amazing. Different dreams, you know. I thought you must have been there. I mean, I was touching you. Paul: Oh, you know, John, don't worry about it. John: There's nothing to worry about.
(notice that topic of telepathy comes up again)
The lyrics of "Twice in a Lifetime" refer to the idea of meeting the love of your life twice. I mean, it's about meeting two different people who are both the love of your life.
Which reminds me of Paul/John and Paul/Linda.

Paul McCartney Interview 1982
Q: "Let me ask you what everybody wants to know. How did you feel when you heard the news about John's murder?"
(at that precise moment my cassette auto-stopped)
PAUL: "You see, your cassette didn't even like the question. (laughs) Listen, John would be the first guy to laugh about that. How did I feel? I can't remember. I can't express it. I can't believe it. It was crazy. It was anger. It was fear. It was madness. It was the world coming to an end. And it was, 'Will it happen to me next?' I just felt everything. I still can't put into words. Shocking. And I ended up saying, 'It's a drag,' and that doesn't really sum it up."
Q: "Were you actually still close to him?"
PAUL: "Yes, yes. I suppose the story was that we were pretty close in the beginning when we were writing stuff together. We felt alot of sympathy for each other, although on a personal level, based on a lot of stuff that went down later, I obviously wasn't that close to him. To me, he was a fella, and you don't get that close to fellas. I felt very close to him, but from alot of what he said later, obviously, I was missing in the picture. But anyway, I felt very close to him then and when the Beatles started to feel the strain towards the last couple of years, it was getting to be a bit of a strain and we were drifting more apart. I think the kind of anchor that had held us together was still there. I think that we all, in a way, started to get really angry with each other, annoyed and frustrated, but we were still very keen on each other, loved each other, I suppose, because we had been mates together for so long. Like Ringo says, 'We were as three brothers.' It's that kind of a feeling. I mean, I didn't realize that, but Ringo would tell me later, 'You are like my brothers, you lot.' We all knew that there was some kind of deep regard for each other."
Q: "When the rift started, it was more like a divorce, like a love/hate relationship, coming apart. Is that true?"
PAUL: "Yes. It sounds weird when you use that analogy because then it takes on another meaning. But yes, it's true. What I mean is that there was that kind of deep feeling and deep heat. (laughs) Then we started arguing about the business and we just started to drift apart, as you say, like a kind of divorce. The bitchiness set in and everyone started going, 'Oh you say that, do you? Well, I'm really gonna let you know what I've been thinking all these years.' And we tended to go over a little bit over the top, I suppose. So it started to split apart. We got very estranged because John went to live in New York with Yoko and they were very much their own couple and there weren't many people that could get into that thing. I really think that was one of the best things that ever happened to him, for his personal happiness. It wasn't too easy for all of us, because he was sort of leaving us and going off on a new life and, whether you like it or not, we felt that each one of us had been each other's crutches for a long time. Then, with John moving away, there was a lot of bitchiness carrying on."
"I talked to Yoko the day after John was killed and the first thing she said was, 'John was really fond of you, you know.' It was almost as if she sensed that I was wondering whether he had... whether the relationship had snapped. I believe it was always there. I believe he really was fond of me, as she said. We were really the best of mates. It was really ace."

“John was the central personality in that group of four. To some extent all of the interpersonal relationships were driven by the desire to be the one standing next to John.
That dynamic is what drove them on and arguably what would drive them apart.
We see it early on in Paul’s jealousy of the position occupied by Stuart Sutcliffe.
We see it in George’s disappointment in his failure to keep John at his side after the Maharishi fell from grace.
Despite John’s lack of engagement on George’s songs, George was more than happy to move back up to stand beside John after 1970. And to be fair John had in late 1969 expressed regret at how George had been sidelined.
George expressly said he would join a band with John at any time, but not with Paul.
Of course John would, perhaps inevitably, pull away again. And this time the rift was substantial - the accounts of their argument in 1974 are quite shocking.
I would say that that drive to be John’s partner - or perhaps in George’s case to position himself as custodian of John’s ‘no bullshit attitude within the group - still informed much of the dynamic after 1980, and maybe even how Paul has shaped the narrative right up to date.”
Bolding is mine… Source is the Nothing Is Real Podcast Facebook group (author is co-host Steven Cockcroft)
Thoughts? I’ve put mine below a cut.
So this POV isn’t original, this is something Lewisohn definitely alludes to in Tune In (I can’t remember the exact quote but he says something to the effect that “everyone’s closest relationship in the band was with John”.
I don’t doubt that the desire to be closest to John drove some of the tensions (although pretty notable that Ringo is largely excluded from this narrative) that’s not my issue though, my issue is: what about John’s desires within the band? Who was John’s closest relationship with? How did John’s desires impact the relationship dynamics during and after the band?
This comment and Lewisohn’s in Tune In sets John up as an object/prize but how John saw the other Beatles was also a key informant of the relationship dynamics in the band. I think Paul being the last primary (sorry Ringo) Beatle standing has warped a lot of the perspectives when it does come to the way we see the band’s story (I.e. I think in some corners we only see things from Paul’s perspective since we don’t have John and George around to answer for themselves and Ringo tends to just support Paul’s POV). I think making John a bit of a cardboard idol of worship and not an active participant in the band dynamics is one way there’s been a diminishing understanding of the what and why of how things unfolded for the band…

Penny Lane's Getting Better (The Beatles x Reader)
Chapter 3: Nowhere Man
English was boring. At least it should have been. Paul kept distracting you, he'd told the teacher that he would sit next to you to "help" you adjust to the class. The teacher allowed this, but the teacher had no idea that Paul just wanted to distract you all class.
He would pass notes and whisper in your ear when the teacher turned her back. You wanted to stab his eyes out, but you restrained the best you could. When class was over, Paul follows you out into the hall.
"What's your next class?" he asks with a smug expression.
"Art," you reply, worried you might have to suffer another class with him.
"Damn, I didn't take art. I think John has that class though. I'd love to be in a class with him," Paul stammers on endlessly. "He's a real great guy, you know? He just is this amazing person he--"
"I need to go," you cut-in, heading towards a random hallway.
"Other direction!" he calls, making you turn around.
You make it to Art just in the nick of time. John let's you sit by him as he smiles.
"Did Paul bother you all of last class?" John smirks.
"Yes, actually," you reply and he snickers as the the teacher enters the class.
"It seems we have a new student today, class," the teacher says, looking at you. Everyone turns to stare at you, a thousand judgmental eyes, well except for John. He has a goofy, stupid grin on his face as everyone stares. He's basking in the fact he already knows you while everyone else doesn't.
See, the more time you've spent with John and his friends, the more you've thought about how unpopular they are with everyone else. It makes you question if you should be hanging out with them, or maybe some of the other girls instead.
The teacher clears her throat and class begins, she instructs the class on different artistic techniques and shading. Once again, you find yourself distracted by John who scribbles on his paper crude images of other students. He laughs and snickers to himself and the rest of the table.
"Mr. Lennon," the teacher slams her hand on table next to him. John drops his pencil and looks up at the teacher with guilty eyes.
"Yes?" he pretends to be unaware that he did anything wrong.
"This isn't a good impression to leave on our new student," the teacher glances at you. You avoid her eye contact before she moves you to a separate table. The rest of class is boring, John steals glances at you and he smirks each time. Class ends quickly and you shuffle out, looking for John.
"Hey." he grabs your shoulders, causing you to spin around.
"Hey," you say back, trying to sound causal. John smirks at you, walking past you to where Ringo and George are standing.
"It's time to get some food," John says, motioning you over.
You looked around the boys, noticing George's shy behavior once more. Ringo snickers in his ear and pats him on the back.
The three whisper to one another as someone comes up behind you.
"There she is," Paul says, placing only one hand on your shoulder. He smiles at you, brightly and genuinely. He notices your distance from the group and pulls you over to them. "You have to get out of your comfort zone someday," he whispers and places his arm around your shoulders.
John glares at Paul who smirks back. George and Ringo act like nothing is happening, obviously wanting to avoid a confrontation.
"You said we were getting something to eat?" you say, breaking the tension. John nods and grumbles something under his breath before starting down the hallway. He was like a quiet thunder after a bolt of lighting. George and Ringo follow closely behind.
"Ladies first," Paul motions for you to step froward. You blush, charging after them with Paul at you heals.
Sometime later, you and the lads ended up outside. Penny Lane was bustling with people as everyone rushed for items and luxuries during their short break.
John didn't seem in a hurry, but Paul did.
There was something so odd about the two of them. They felt so different, but yet they both acted the same sometimes. Like in class, they both distracted you with notes and whispers.
You didn't get it, but something was going on between them that only George and Ringo seemed to get.
Maybe that was for the better...
Paul kept near you, walking hastily ahead the group. From time to time George or Ringo would run up to walk with you both, but they usually fell back in line with John behind them.
"So, are you going to tell me where we're going?" she looks to Paul, but expected an answer from someone else.
Then the entire group stopped in front of a large red gate. It was surrounded by a large brick wall that read:
"Strawberry Field"
You raised your eyebrow.
"Welcome to Strawberry Fields," John says, pushing past you to the gate. He pulls on it a couple of times before ushering George over. It was like they were in a circus act as George climbed on to John's shoulders, being lifted over the brick wall.
"You know I think it says, 'Strawberry Field,'" you say, but everyone ignores you. Ringo is lifted up next, then John helps you over the wall.
You sit at the top of the wall looking down at the boys like a queen to her knights. George and Ringo are already on the other side, conversing amongst themselves.
They wait for you to join them, but instead you are more interested in what John and Paul are doing.
They are whispering to each other, but it doesn't seem to be in quite a friendly way.
"Back off, Paul," John hisses.
"I don't know what you're talking about, I am simply being nice," Paul says, calmly back.
"Bulls--" John gets cut off.
"You boys coming or what?" you call, looking down at them.
"Coming!" Paul yells, pushing past John and jumping on to the wall. You help him up the rest of the way and he smiles as he sits next to you. John glares at Paul and jumps on to the wall.
He gets up fine on his own before Paul smirks and pushes John off the wall.
You cover your mouth in surprise as Paul laughs. John grumbles on the ground and George comes to his aid. You quickly get off the wall, afraid that Paul might push you off too.
"John? Are you okay?" you help him up as he mumbles under his breath.
"He's fine," Paul says, jumping off the wall and standing next to you.
"What's gotten into you?" John snaps at Paul. He then storms away farther into the fields. To your surprise, the fields were covered in strawberries just like the sign had said.
Paul huffs and you glares at him.
"What has gotten into you?" you whisper, following after John with the other boys.
Paul stays where he is and sighs.
You rush after John through the strawberry field with George and Ringo on your heels.
"I can't believe Paul is acting so--"
"I can't exactly blame him," George cuts, probably being the most words he's ever said to you.
"What do you mean?" you ask, stopping in your tracks. Ringo gasps for breath as George stares at him.
"It's obvious that something is making them jealous," George says.
"Or someone," Ringo adds.
"Jealous?" you ask, "You don't mean..."
Ringo and George exchange glances.
"They both--" George is cut off as Paul runs out from the the brush of strawberries.
"There you four...three are," he says, fixing his hair. George and Ringo continue walking away and leaving you with Paul. You turn to Paul, maybe confronting him was the best thing to do.
"What's with you and John?" you ask, stopping him from following the others. He sighs, brushing his hair back. He looks as if he's trying to avoid the question.
"It's complicated," he mutters.
You glare at him.
"Fine," he hisses, glancing around.
"Listen, John and I have been through hell and back, but neither of us can agree sometimes." Paul explains, pacing around the rows of strawberries. He picks one of the strawberries and eats it.
"What's that supposed to mean?" you push, it seems nobody in this friend group could just be forward with their explanations.
"John likes you, okay?" he crosses his arms.
"He does?" you can't help but smile a bit.
"Don't get all smiley on my now," he snaps, walking closer to you, "you don't understand. John likes you, but I...I can't have that." He frowns, holding himself like a hug. He doesn't face you, but you know that there is something bothering him.
"Why?" is all you say. Your frustration was disappearing as you walk closer to him.
"John and I are close. Terribly so, I worry about him all the time. His parents aren't around, he lives with his aunt, he's always getting into trouble...I need him to be protected. " Paul sits down surrounded by strawberries. "That's all I want for him, but sometimes I get a little greedy, I supposed. I just worry you'll take him away from me."
You sit next to him and lean your head on his shoulder.
"I'm not taking him away from you, Paul. I just want to be a part of the friend group, you know?" you smile as his face brightens up.
He take your hand.
"Thank you," he whispers.
"George said there was jealously between you and John...could you maybe explain that?" you ask.
Paul blushes.
"Well, I've never told anyone but--"
"Oh, look who it is," John hisses, walking out from the brush with the other guys. Paul let's go of your hands and stand up quickly.
"John, I'm sorry about what I did--"
"Save it," John says, grabbing your arm and pulling you up, "Class is starting again soon, let's go." They walk towards the gate again. Paul sighs, nodding to you and following at the back of the group.
"John, maybe you should listen to him," you whisper to him.
"Shut it, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I can't believe I took his ass in sometimes, such a nowhere man..." he helps you over the wall again.
You head back to school and wonder for the rest of the day what Paul was trying to say to you.

Understanding Lennon McCartney Rewatch Part 4.2
Having Paul talking about following his artistic muse and deciding not to care what other people think paired with the insanity of McCartney 2 is fantastic.
I sincerely hope those 20K words that Paul wrote for his posterity about his time in jail are published some day.
He looks so pretty in this interview!
Tumblr media
John and Sean are so cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Nobody Knows” is about secretly hooking up with John, obviously. But “that includes you, honey!” Is that at Linda?? Don't do that to your mother, Paul.
The only scenario in which I  support a hypothetical JP sexual/romantic relationship in the 70s is that hypothetically no wives were harmed in the making of this hypothetical.
Not the cut from “Coming Up” to “Probably the thing that John and I will do . . .” to John's self interview about bisexuality and Paul and life begins at forty back to Coming Up interspersed with footage of happy JP to John getting out a guitar to record a demo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the demo is (Just Like) Starting Over. Just bury me already.
Another lyrical reference I didn't catch in the demo version: “it's easy.” Sung very similarly to how he sang it in All You Need is Love.
John comparing them to brothers (Everly) and a marriage (Goffin and King) in the same sentence. And he's right, too.
I love the interviewer being so skeptical of John and how dismissive he is of Paul in this interview and how he can't get his story straight on when the last time he'd seen Paul was. More women should've interviewed him.
How I imagine it went. Interviewer: hi John are you ready to -- John: did you know I never think about Paul anymore unless somebody brings him up? Interviewer: but I didn't – John: yeah he used to show up at my door with a guitar and I told him to go away. Interviewer: ooookaaay?
Cutie! I love John so much.
Tumblr media
“If I was dead, they wouldn't be angry with me. If I'd conveniently died in the mid seventies after Rock and Roll album or Walls and Bridges (((everybody loves you when you're six feet in the ground))), they'd all be writing this worshipful stuff about what a great guy.” It hurts to hear and it hurts that he was exactly right.
I don't care what John and Yoko say, manifesting is just another capitalist lie to keep the proletariat complacent.
“The only one who can control me is me and that's just barely possible.” It's one of those John quotes that's so silly and cute and also entirely relatable. He really had a way of capturing the human condition.
“Nobody ever said anything about Paul having a spell over me when I was with him for a long time! Or me having a spell over Paul! They didn't think that was abnormal, two guys together.” Yeah, John, they definitely did and they made fun of it and tried to poke holes in it, or have you forgotten?
“Or four guys together.” Yeah. George and Ringo were in the Beatles too.
“In those days? Why didn't anybody ever say ‘How come those guys don't split up?” You're joking, right John?
The video/audio pairing here though! You mean ‘what's going on under the table?’
Tumblr media
Love John getting pissed that nobody asked him, “What is that Paul and John business?” RIP John, you would've loved Beatles Tumblr.

Now and Then Day
This sideblog began after watching Get Back nagged and nagged at me until finally I started to look closer at context relative to the Beatles discography and suddenly started experiencing these WAIT WHAT moments every day as what I thought I knew got turned inside out. The appeal was in looking at something you knew like the back of your hand from another direction and seeing/hearing something new you hadn’t seen/heard before. But I had no idea we’d get another song to add to the mix in 2023.
I knew Now and Then day would be an experience. I thought I’d have to wait the whole day before listening. But I got lucky and found a few minutes to listen to Now and Then when it was first released this morning. And inexplicably clicked to hear the remastered Love Me Do instead. I cannot explain my brain.
I then tried to start Now and Then and noped out before 15 seconds in. Too overwhelming. Not the right time. I was too rushed and needed more space to mentally prepare for it.
I caught NPR covering the Now and Then release today on my drive home. They had a Lennon biographer (I didn’t catch the name) reviewing the song. He said the song recalls John’s more delicate tunes like Beautiful Boys (sic) and mentioned John started the song in 1970.
Say what?!
Here I was late last night trying to nail down a better date for John’s demo than “late 70s”. Meanwhile, biographers are just here on national public radio pushing lies. Did he have ChatGPT write his comments?
Oh yeah, they also said it was created with AI no qualifier.🤦‍♀️
They played a few snippets of the song including one new piece not in the doc but refrained from playing it in full. It was mostly wrong Beatles facts all segment.
Trying the song a second time hours later, I got through it in one piece but was feeling abit 🥴 about it as a song itself. Having just listened to the original demo was probably a mistake, and I could hear all the seams and feeling the Frankenstein song effect.
Third attempt sounded more together, with the seams not quite as noticeable. I was prepared for the changes, the layering bits from other songs, and noted highlights of the instrumentals: the strings, George’s guitar bits, and Ringo’s flourishes. I love Paul coming through on the future tense certainty of “I will love you” (is that I Will?). Ringo’s shimmering effect choice (is it tams?) is such an entrancing closer. Giles’ score and Beatles recycled bits do mend the seams well once I stop thinking about them too much.
On fourth listen, my biggest notes are questioning why Paul’s harmony with John isn’t more distinct. He shows a lot of restraint here but maybe too much? Did Get Back get to him in other ways than the most obvious? Is he just self-conscious about his own voice? Or is it the limitation of the tech when it comes to harmony mixing?
The strings were what I was most worried about, but their entrance at the 1:15 mark really kicks it up a notch to transition into the singalong. Other standouts are 1:40 with George’s flourish and 2:29 peak with the guitar solo.
Lyrically, it’s the conditional and if I make it through it’s all because of you that haunts in layers of meaning both grim and cathartic that reverberate through time and space.
If John makes it through emotionally to 1980 and has a comeback? Congrats, bud you did it. But he’s stopped physically through no fault of his own. There’s the obvious mourning of that lost potential even 40 years later.
If this song this voice this message of John’s makes it through to 2023 and reaches the public? Well, success there, Paul’s tenacity saw it through with help from many friends. John’s voice and song lives on through Paul’s wish to conjure him by his side. On the Day of the Dead no less. I was reminded of the concept of tulpas today and was knocked back on my heels by the thought.
If John as an artist and Beatles as a band make it through so fans are still listening in 2023? This doubles as a bit of a fan love letter, and thank you for 60 years. Released on the day Beatlemania first appeared in black and white.
But then there’s also a reflector on this. Some original Beatles fans have aged with Paul and Ringo and others have not and aren’t here to share this like John and George. There’s grief and mourning from those still here about those lost, and the song acts as a catharsis. A kind of thank you to the band for being there for fans in good times and bad. The symbiosis of fame between a band and its fans across the decades.
It’s a lot.
I spent some time looking at the youtube comments on the song. Some original fans but many second and even third generation fans. And quite a few stories about a loved one who loved the band and recently passed away like this one:
Tumblr media
And this:
Tumblr media
But also in there are stories of catharsis and healing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And many memories of the joy that Beatles music has brought to people’s lives. We all have these stories of how their songs weave into our own life. But it’s the joy that I keep coming back to as the secret sauce to the band’s earliest days. I often think of those early songs more in terms of feeling then anything, and it starts with the first single.
I love the Love Me Do remastering. That harmonica sounds so crisp. The bluegrassy harmonies have never sounded better. The ones on ple-ee-ee-ease still give me chills. Ringo’s drums moved forward in the mix to appreciate that driving beat just a bit more. I can hear the bass too. I can’t wait to hear what the other early Red album tracks sound like.
But next to Now and Then, I’m also looking at the lyrics like I never did before. Why give it another glance? Written by a 16 year old kid, it always sounded a bit juvenile and simple. But suddenly next to Now and Then, there’s a weight to it I never heard before.
Love, love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please, love me do
It sounds like a promise. Now and Then is fulfillment of that always. It’s no longer just the whim of a kid. But rather the beginning of 7 decade devotional: To John, to the band, to fans, and reflected back again. The love is reciprocal from all sides.
How’s that for a WAIT WHAT moment? Paul turning the least likely song inside out and backwards. And he didn’t even add a lyrical middle eight.

Time travel.
Ringo laughs at Paul’s theory at first. When a searing white flash momentarily blinds them and they somehow end up standing on a beach in the Bahamas, Ringo thinks he might be having a stroke.
He’s had freaky experiences when he’s been drugged up or so drunk he can’t remember his own name, but this isn’t that. He’s been clean and sober for years, and he’s eighty-two years old, so he assumes this must simply be the end.
One moment he’d been having dinner with Paul in one of his favourite restaurants, as they usually do when Paul is in LA, and the next he’s standing in the sand surrounded by palm trees, waves lapping over his shoes.
Maybe he’s dead already. Maybe this is heaven.
It feels so real though, and Paul is standing right beside Ringo, his face pale with shock as he blinks up at the strong sun beaming down on them.
It takes Ringo a moment to realise they’re in the Bahamas - he recognises the beach but can’t quite place it - and suddenly he knows exactly where they are because there’s a young John Lennon swimming in the sea about ten feet in front of them.
Paul must clock John at the same time, because Ringo senses the other man freeze next to him, his eyes fixed on the scene in front of him.
John must be in his mid-twenties. He doesn’t notice them; he’s simply floating in the water, sunglasses perched on his nose as he gazes up at the sky. He is very much alive, and a lot younger than the last time Ringo saw him.
Maybe someone slipped something into Ringo’s drink at the restaurant.
Paul grabs Ringo’s arm, eyes wide and still fixed on John as if he can’t believe what he’s seeing.
Paul opens his mouth and it’s clear that he’s about to call out to the young John, but before he has a chance there’s a blinding white flash once again, and suddenly the beach is gone, and they’re standing outside a run-down club with a poster on the front door advertising music acts, all written in German.
Hamburg.
Before Ringo can get his bearings any further, it happens again. And again. And again.
Each time they end up in a place he recognises, a place they’ve been before. Sometimes they’re there for only a minute or two, sometimes several minutes.
Maybe Ringo really is dead and his life is literally flashing before his eyes. It doesn’t explain why Paul is with him though.
It’s only when they end up at the back of a registry office watching John and Paul’s wedding that Paul whispers time travel in Ringo’s ear.
Ringo wants to tell him not to be so fucking ridiculous, but he’s too busy staring at a twenty-two year old George sitting in the front row.
He can only see the back of George’s head, but Ringo knows it’s him. Not only because he would know the back of George’s head anywhere, but also because there’s a twenty-five year old version of himself sitting right next to George.
His heart beats a little faster. He wills George to turn around. Ringo would give anything to see his face again.
He has no idea if people can see them, but he suddenly starts thinking about every time travel movie he’s ever seen. Can they interact with people here without messing up the future? Or did he never simply notice that an older version of himself and Paul were standing at the back at John and Paul’s wedding? What would happen if he went up to George right now to talk to him? Ringo doesn’t even know what he would say; there’s so much he’s dreamt of saying if he ever had the chance to see George again - I love you, I miss you, I think about you every day, I wish you were still here, our grandchildren are so beautiful, you were always my everything -
And then as if George can hear him, he turns to look over his shoulder, and his eyes meet Ringo’s.
Ringo’s breath catches in his throat; he tries to sob George’s name but nothing comes out, so he takes off his sunglasses so that he can make eye contact with the person he’s loved every day since he was twenty years old.
George is even more beautiful than Ringo remembers, and even though he spends every day looking at pictures of George, nothing compares to the real thing.
There’s a moment of confusion on George’s face, as if he almost recognises the tearful blue eyes gazing back at him, but then there’s another white flash and he’s gone.
Just gone.
He was close enough that Ringo could have walked right over there and spoken to him. He was almost close enough to touch.
Time travel.
Familiar scenes appear before them as they skip through time in a series of flashes. They watch the highs and lows of their lives, and Ringo doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t understand why this is happening, or why they’re seeing the particular things they’re seeing.
And maybe it doesn’t matter, because he gets to see George.
Even when he sees some of the moments he doesn’t particularly want to relive, he’ll take them just so he can see George.
George screaming at Ringo when Ringo drinks so much that he nearly dies. (Ringo reminds himself that’s the moment that made him quit drinking altogether).
George sinking into a deep depression when John dies. (Ringo reminds himself that John’s death strengthened their crumbling marriage).
George sprawled across Eric’s lap in a nightclub. (Ringo reminds himself that Clapton doesn’t get George in the end).
George sick in a hospital bed during the last days of his life. (Ringo reminds himself that George isn’t in pain anymore).
But Ringo is allowed to see good moments too. His favourite moment that he witnesses is probably their first kiss, because he can still remember exactly how he felt in that moment even sixty years later, and it makes him feel twice as happy to be able to experience it again from a slightly different perspective.
He almost forgets that Paul is right next to him throughout this entire journey, and he’s just in the middle of wondering whether Paul is experiencing similar emotions seeing John again, when suddenly there’s another white flash-
And they’re right back at the restaurant.
Ringo blinks.
They’re sat exactly how they were sat when this all started, as if no time at all has passed.
Paul is completely pale, as if he’s just seen a ghost, which makes Ringo think he didn’t just dream the whole thing.
“Time travel, eh?” Ringo chuckles nervously under his breath, trying to make light of the situation.
It’s only then that he realises his shoes are still wet from the beach.

Chapter 11
Joie sat there a long time. She didn't know what to think. She didn't know what to feel. She was tired and ached all over. But he kissed her; the scent of his aftershave still lingering in her senses, the feeling of his lips still present on her skin. What was that for? Gratitude? Something more?
What did she think about her relationship with George? He was definitely the "quiet one" unless he had something to say, and he frequently had something to say. He did just protect her from Ringo's rant in his quiet, authoritative way. And come to think of it, what was that all about? Ritchey never seemed to her to have a confrontational bone in his body. After all, wasn't she hired to help them when they needed her? Well, fuck that...this was her last tour. If it would be a matter of going back home to the states or keeping this shit up, well, she'd pack her bags and gladly go home.
Of that, she was steadfast and certain.
She got up from the sofa and went to her bed. Closing her eyes, only one thing was on her mind. The kiss from George.
..........
After closing Joie's hotel room door, George leaned against the wall and shut his eyes.
"Fucking unbelievable," he shook his head. "A bloody kiss on the forehead...what the bloody hell... She's going to think of me as her brother, not the impression I was going for."
His chin fell to his chest as he shook his head again. Should he knock on her door again and kiss her until her toes curl? He knew what moves pleased a woman. There were plenty of teachers in Hamburg, happy to show an enthusiastic 17 year old what goes where, when and he was an avid learner. The groupies and other entertainers knew the score. Fast, easy, usually no strings.
He took a long, deep breath.
That wasn't his lovely Joie. It was getting to be the time he needed to lay his cards on the table and while he was usually a confident lover, he worried about how to approach Joie. He would prefer if she would take the reins and give him a bit more encouragement...generally not a problem with other ladies.
He was going to approach her when the time was right. No need to rush. By his estimate, Joie had 3 months left on her visa. Visions of her lovely body, still tanned a light bronze, freely given by her would be a dream come true. Her breasts crushed against his chest as they kissed deeply and passionately, invaded his thoughts more than he liked to admit. Removing her clothes and touching her all over kept him up at night.
It was time to tell her before he needed to jack off in the shower to ease the pressure. There were always the ever available girls who just wanted to shag, but he was beginning to find the anonymity bothered him. He really wanted to belong to someone, to be loved by that one special girl and he was sure he could make that a reality.
..........
Desperate times call for desperate measures and he was ready to lay it on the line...but not today, as he headed down the hall to the suite.
Joie awoke to the sounds of birds chirping outside her window. She jumped out of bed, feeling that she was late. She usually brought tea and toast into the boys, although Mal usually woke them up with a shake of their beds. Brian was known to call them, ringing the phone over and over until someone answered. She threw a skirt and top on, and flew out of her door. Down at the end of the hall was the suite where the boys were, Brian's room, and Mal's room in between.
Joie tentatively knocked at the door, not sure what she would be greeted with, but Paul answered the door and let her in.
"Mornin' love," he greeted, bright and chipper. He was dressed and presentable. They all were. John looked a little worse for wear but was still dressed and ready.
"Am I late?" she croaked out.
"We decided you needed a Beatle-break," George told her gently as he handed her a cup of coffee.
They all surprised her, John handing her a blueberry muffin and Ritchey pulling out her chair from the table.
"A Beatle-break, huh?" she smiled at them, settling down at the breakfast table.
"And I'm sorry for being rude to you last night," Ringo offered, giving her a warm squeeze of her shoulders. "I was way out of line."
She looked at him as she took a sip of her coffee. "I love all of you, you know."
"We know," Paul offered. "That's why we give you such a hard time all the time."
..........
She was glad when they finally landed at Heathrow in the middle of the night. It was necessary to do things out in the real world when most people were asleep in their beds. There was less chance of running into thousands of fans and being mauled to death. Joie slept on the plane most of the ride and couldn't wait to close her eyes in her own bed at Freda's. She felt like sleeping for a week and eating everything in the fridge.
As Joie took a taxi to Freda's, she contemplated two choices...either getting her own place and staying in England for 3 more months or going back home. She missed her family but had talked to her father about letting her sister Jordan come out for a visit. That would mean she would need her own place. She shouldn't continue to be in Freda's way, although Freda never said a word.
Joie insisted on paying her own way and chipped in for rent, groceries and utilities. But she longed to get her own place. She just didn't know where. She also thought about dating. It had been a long dry spell since Charlie.
..........
Brian was in a sour mood the next day as he walked into the office. Joie was already there, as bright as she could be, considering she'd probably managed only 8 hours of sleep over the last 10 days. But she also had gotten to see Paris and Munich and Dublin. At least a little of it.
By noon, Brian had left the office for a "meeting" and both Freda and Joie took a deep breath of relief.
"Tell me about the tour..." Freda asked, excitedly. "It sounded wild."
"It was. It was just cars and hotel rooms and more cars and receptions and all the while, the girls screamed," Joie answered, shaking her head. "It's unbelievable."
The phone rang, interrupting her, but Joie answered it. It was George.
"Hi, love. Are you ok? Did you manage to get some well deserved sleep?"
"I'm fine. How about you?"
"The usual. Hey, could you come out to the house tomorrow? That decorator is coming out and I need your help."
"Sure" Joie answered, her heart beating faster. "Should I just come out in the morning?"
"That would be great. Thanks," George told her. "I'll see you in a couple hours. We have a meeting with Brian."
"What time?" Joie asked. "He left about 15 minutes ago."
"Oh, that's ok," George answered. "We don't have to meet him for a couple of hours. I'm heading for the studio now and then we'll be there later."
"Ok," Joie said. She was looking forward to seeing George. The feelings surprised her. "See you later. And be careful driving in."
"I will, thanks," he said.
Joie turned to Freda with a happy smile on her face.
Joie told Freda she was going out to George's the next day.
"Has it been fun decorating his house?"
"Yes, but I didn't do it alone. Cyn really helped, so did Maureen. I think Cyn has some interior decorator in her!"
"Well, she was an art student in the old days," Freda offered. "Very artistic."
The phone rang again and Joie answered it again. It was Brian. His speech was slurred.
"Come and get me," he mumbled. "You have a car courtesy of the Beatles. Come 'n get me, Miss Armagh."
Joie strained to understand him. "Where are you?"
"And don't tell anyone. Anyone. Got it?"
"I got it. But where are you?"
Brian gave her an address, told her to figure it out and hung up. Joie turned to look at Freda. "It was Brian. He asked me to go and pick him up. Maybe his car broke down? He hung up too fast for me to ask."
"He wants you to come and get him?" Freda asked. "Where is he?"
"I have no idea. He gave me an address and told me to figure it out. And he told me not to tell anyone."
"Why so secretive?"
Joie shrugged. She grabbed her purse and left the office with a wave to Freda. "I'll be back. And then we are gonna talk about my finding my own place. I really need to give you and Will some privacy."
"I like having a roommate...." Freda told her sincerely.
"Maybe Will can be your roommate!"
Freda laughed. "My parents would never go for that!"
..........
Joie checked the map in the car and realized she was going into some shady neighborhood. She got there relatively quickly, thanks mainly to George, who showed her how to drive in London. She inched the car along, looking for the address. It was a bar.
Leaning against a phone booth was Brian Epstein, raincoat pulled up close to his face. He spotted her and jumped into the car. He smelled like alcohol and cigarette smoke, and his lip and nose were bleeding.
"Brian...." Joie began, concerned. "What happened? Should we call the police? You look like you are hurt. Do you need a doctor?"
"Drive," he barked "and hurry up about it."
His head bobbed up and down with every bump. He was very drunk. She thought she would take him to the office and try to call Mal or George or someone. Maybe George would be there and he could help her.
"You are so naïve," he blurted. "you don't understand anything."
"What is it you want me to understand?" Joie asked him, realizing it was probably fruitless to have any kind of discussion with a drunk person.
He was silent. "You really are imperspectively stupid."
Joie wanted to laugh. He sounded ridiculous. "Right," she answered.
He seemed to sober up slightly, at least enough to keep his head up. He wiped the blood off his lip and tried to appear a gentleman by running his hand over his raincoat and smoothing his hair down.
"I don't like you," he said suddenly.
"Well," Joie answered calmly, "I don't particularly like you either. But that really isn't necessary. We just work together. That's all."
He turned his face towards her. "No, missy, you work for me. We don't work together....you work for me."
"I work for the Beatles," Joie responded. She was driving faster to get somewhere so she could get away from him. The smell of the alcohol and the smoke was overpowering in the little car. And Joie had the window open.
"And they work for me...." He said flatly. "If I tell them to get rid of you, they will."
"I don't care," Joie responded as coolly as she could. But she was getting nervous. She didn't like being with him in the car.
"For fuck's sake, open your window," she exclaimed, more to herself than anything. She had seen enough drunk men to last her a lifetime.
He seemed to slip back into sleep, but woke up with Joie parked at the office. He got out and slammed the door shut.
Joie sat in the car and burst into tears. She cried so hard that she thought she'd break. Her heart was racing and the car smelled terrible and she wanted to go home. Although she loved England, she felt like she hated everyone who lived there...except Freda.
She was done. Joie Armagh was throwing in the towel. She was beaten by 4 Liverpool boys and their posh manager. She was going to march up into the NEMS office and quit. She would book the next plane out. Joie had met her match and she was quitting. That was it. California, here I come.
When Joie entered the office, the boys were all present and Brian had washed his face, brushed his teeth, combed his hair and was presentable. The boys were in the middle of questioning Brian as to where Joie was. She heard him say he "bloody well didn't care."
"Come on Eppy," John cajoled. "Where is she? You took her for a ride didn't you?"
"I want her gone," he burst out. "She's a bloody American and we can get a fine English gentleman to help you on the road if we need to. Or you can hire one of your friends. I don't care. I want her gone."
Joie stood there. Paul noticed her first, her face red and puffy from crying. But she was standing straight and spoke clearly. "Thank you all very much for the opportunity you gave me. But I'm leaving. If you need 2 weeks, I'll do that. But I'm turning in notice."
"Thank bloody hell..."Brian said.
No one said a word for a moment. Joie stood there vulnerable, trying to stand her ground. Trying to maintain some dignity.
Paul was silent. John was silent. Ringo was silent. Uncharacteristically, it was George who put an arm around her and led her out of the office.
"You need to stay for a meeting," Brian called after him.
"Sod off," George responded. "Go clean yourself up. And then we'll talk."
George put Joie, who had started sobbing again, into his car. She was blubbering about her car and Brian and the smell in the car and going back to the States. He calmly picked up the phone in his glove box and called Mal.
"Mal, I need some help. Joie's blue mini is at NEMS. We need someone to take it over to get cleaned out. Brian had too much to drink and the smoky/alcohol smell is all over her car," he said. "Whatever it costs to clean up, charge it to Brian."
"Where are you taking me?"
"Just relax now, Joie. We're going home."
"Freda's?"
"No" George said gently. "My home."
Joie didn't argue. She put her head back against the head rest and took a deep breath. It was warm and relaxing in the car and soon she was asleep. When she woke, they were in Esher, at George's house.
They walked into the house in silence. Joie noticed that George had added his own personality to the house. It was warm and open. Joie felt very comfortable.
"I imagine you want to get this day behind you," he said. "Just go into my room, grab a shirt, take a shower and lay down if you want. There's a robe in the closet too. I'll sleep in another room. Or maybe you are hungry? How about some tea and sandwiches?"
"That would be nice," Joie said, smiling happy to be free from the office. "I'll go clean up and be right out."
Joie went into George's master bedroom that she knew so well from arranging the furniture. It was exactly as she had arranged it, only with more of his personal belongings. She grabbed a t-shirt and the robe and took a shower. She stayed in the shower a long time, letting the water run over her.
Her plan was to head back to California. To Santa Monica Pier. To shopping. To seeing her family and friends. To the Pacific Ocean. To even worse traffic and the lovely San Bernardino Mountains. To peace and quiet.
Toweling off, she put the t shirt on and wrapped the robe around her. She felt human again. And when she went into the kitchen, George was sitting at the table waiting for her with a cup of tea and cheese and tomato sandwiches.
"Hi," she said simply.
He had changed into jeans and an open white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He was barefoot and his hair was disheveled. Hot tea was steaming in front of his face. He looked wonderful. He smelled wonderful. Joie watched him and sat comfortably in his t-shirt and robe, her face scrubbed clean.
"Hi," he answered. "do you feel better?"
"Much," she told him. "Thank you for what you did."
He stood and passed the cup of tea to her. "You're welcome."
Joie sat at the table and cupped the tea in her hands, enjoying the warmth.
And the silence.
"What he did was wrong," George said barely over a whisper. "He never should have treated you that way or have done what he did."
"George, he never liked me so it really isn't all that surprising. He just never did. Not from day one," Joie told him. "I don't know what I did. We were just like oil and water."
"I wish you would've told me it was that bad. I would have done something...."
"Oh, there was nothing you could have done. It just needed to play itself out. It's ok. It just made me realize that I need to go back home."
George choked for a moment and seemed to be taken back. '"Don't give up on us so quick."
Joie's eyes opened wide. 'It's been 3 months, George..."
"Don't let what Brian did send you back home. Besides, I need your help with the house," he smiled. "Otherwise, my mother is going to handle it."
Joie smiled back and took a bite of her sandwich. "Would that be so bad?"
"You don't know my mother...." George responded lightly, sipping his tea. "besides, we'd all miss you."
Joie was silent for a moment. Truth be told, she'd miss them too.
"You know," he continued, "Brian is a mixed bag. He polished us up, got us noticed, but he's a troubled guy. He has......trouble with women. Especially strong women."
"His he married?" Joie asked.
George looked at her. "No," he answered. "Never will be either."
Joie turned her head slightly. "Why?"
"Joie...." George started. "Brian is....Brian...well, he's gay."
"Gay?" Joie asked and after a moment, the lightbulb went off in her head. "Oh."
"Yeah....'oh'," he answered. "He's very closeted about it, but he's a good guy. He's just...he's very protective of us."
"So I'm a threat?"
"In a way. He's very motherly...you know? And you've taken over that role in a way he never could."
Joie ran a hand through her hair. "So I should be more understanding?"
'I think you've been understanding enough when it comes to Brian. Especially after today."
"So what should I do?" Joie asked him.
"Let me handle that," George said to her. "Just let me handle it."
"George, you don't have to fight my battles," Joie told him, watching him carefully. She wanted him to kiss her...really kiss her madly. He was so adorable.
"I know that," he answered with a nod. "But just let me handle things for now. I promise you it will be ok. Just trust me."
Joie sipped her tea and looked into his deep brown eyes. "I trust you, George...."
George looked at her in silence for a long time, reaching across the table to take her hand gently in his. Joie blinked slowly and enjoyed the moment between them. It was the longest conversation she'd ever had with him.
"George..." Joie began. She wanted to ask him why he didn't run around with other women when they were out on tour, but stopped herself. Maybe he had and she just didn't know it. He seemed more private than the other 3, and Joie thought she would leave it alone and changed the subject. "I know we are supposed to go out on tour again in a couple days. What should I do? I don't want to go."
"We've got a couple of days," he answered. "Why don't you stay here and we'll figure it out."
Joie looked at him. "I can't stay here George. I couldn't impose on you like that."
"You can stay in the coach house. I'll be in the main house. Let's just do that for a couple of days..until I leave."
"It....I....are you sure?" Joie stammered a bit.
George brightened. "I'm sure Joie. And leave things to me...just for now. I don't want to run your life, but I want to take care of a couple of things. Don't want you buying your airplane ticket back to the states just yet."

- Ringo teasing Glyn about not getting to bed last night <3
George: Do you know about that? They collect all nice-looking things and make a garden around where they are, just with all the groovy things they find. It's great.
- George literally checking if Ringo even knows what an octopus's garden is. I love that he does a bit of work on it, and then immediately tries to get it to resolve! Everything must resolve. Even octopuses. It's such a beautiful happiness of a song. I love George M coming to smile at it. I love John wandering in in his sailor's hat. <3
- Oh my god everyone is so lovely with Heather today, maybe it would be actually nice if they just went to live in a commune and raised children together. Somewhere sunshine and easy.
- I love that John wants Paul to do 'that old gospel ending that Elvis did', and gets moody that Paul ignores him, and then sings it softly right up and at him.
- Paul on drums while Ringo's sitting right there next to him... We don't get to see how that came about so I'm going to assume it was fine.
- I hope Heather's little wrinkled face is a genuine reaction shot to Yoko's singing, because I think it's lovely how interested and confused by it she looks. I love that a bit later she goes and sits with John and Yoko because they're on the floor, and then does some Yoko style singing with them. I think it's so freeing and beautiful for her, and I just think all girls should see women make noise that way. And John incorporating her into the song, and this face when she sees someone watching:
Tumblr media
- EVERYTHING SHOULD BE SONGVID. FOR ALWAYS EVER MORE. PLEASE THANK YOU.
- John and Yoko dancing, GM with a maraca, Paul chucking Heather at the ceiling, Mal having a little dance! SO LOVELY.
Heather: Mr Sock... Mr Sock? Mr Sock? Glyn: Er yes, Mrs Sock.
- GM trying to make them rehearse new songs. Beatles thinking they maybe just won't though.
- I love when Paul says he might add strings to Long and Winding Road, and GM teases them about how they've been on about doing things SIMPLE and in ONE TAKE and then John's constantly 'we can just cheat there' and Paul's constantly 'well we'll add orchestras obviously!'
- Paul feeling every bit of Billy's playing. - Billy feeling every bit of Paul's delight.
Tumblr media
John: Very strong dream. We both dreamt about it... Amazing. Different dreams, you know. I thought you must have been there. I mean, I was touching you. George: Was it sexually oriented? Paul: Oh, you know, John, don't worry about it. John: There's nothing to worry about.
ANSWER THE QUESTION, JOHN.

The Beatles
Great Essence (part 4)
#book "Balloon. Aeronauts and artifacts - Boris Grebenshchikov"
George Harrison
Tumblr media
Although the physical body of the singer and musician, Beatles guitarist George Harrison is no longer with us and his ashes are scattered somewhere over Ganga, his spirit is always with us, as well as his songs. I think I personally owe him a lot, which I appreciate in my life, George turned out to be a teacher for me. For me, his songs are filled with sunlight.
He was called a "Quiet Beatle", but sometimes he wrote songs even more fantastic than the songs of his great colleagues.
Tumblr media
Paul McCartney brought him into the future award-winning band when George was not even fourteen years old, and the rest of the Beatles immediately began exploiting child labor with gusto. However, very soon George showed that he could do something else besides playing well-honed guitar parts.
His first songs were just wonderful and simple, but on the set of the movie "Help!" George found a sitar lying in a pile of props and became interested in an exotic stringed instrument. And it had to happen that his wife Patti took him to a lecture by some Indian guru just a few days later. There was a chain reaction, the doors to the East opened. And George's music suddenly moved into a new dimension.
As the folk song says, "being a Beatle is a big deal." Everything you do immediately becomes a part of the lives of millions of people. Every word and every note is perceived as a revelation. And that's why you can't create anything but absolute perfection. George did not disappoint.

By mixing East and West, he received an unprecedented synthesis – a new and lively path to the future.
In 1970, the Beatles went their separate ways. Each of the participants has released a solo album. But while Paul sang about flowers and sheep, John attacked Paul, and Ringo tried to reconcile them, George, who was drawn to the wisdom of the East, immediately took the bull by the horns and asked: "What is Life?" The general public appreciated the depth of the artist's search, and the triple album "All Things Must Pass" was recognized as the most successful of all post-Beatles records.

One day to George was visited by his friend and teacher Ravi Shankar and told him about the disasters of the Indian people. Sensitive George responded and immediately wrote the song "Bangladesh". But after thinking it over carefully, I decided that this was not enough. Why don't all his friends get together and play a concert, all the proceeds from which would go to this very Bangladesh? Said and done. However, at the last moment it turned out that Paul won't be there, and John refused to play without Yoko (whose singing often scared people unaccustomed to him), but this shortcoming was compensated by the participation of Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and other wonderful people.
Concerts to help the hungry in Bangladesh were a success, and George turned out to be the godfather of all subsequent charity concerts, like Live Aid; thus proving that a musician can not only sing, but also really help people in need.

Having proved this, he continued to do what he loved – playing guitar and writing songs
In my youth, every new year began in our company with the fact that, waking up on the morning of the first of January, we always put Harrison on – as if this was a guarantee that the year would go right.
Maybe that's how it turned out. Actually, there was a slightly different attitude towards music back then.

Moving from one apartment to another consisted mainly of transporting a tape recorder with speakers, other things, as a rule, were extremely few. The tape recorder was the heart of any home. I remember seeing someone's things on the street, put up for transportation to a new place, we were amazed at the lack of a device for playing music. It was completely incomprehensible to us, we decided that people were probably sick. You can live without clothes and without a bed, but how can you live without music?
You know, I think we were right.
And Harrison's music has always been different from all other music. George never went for banal harmonic solutions – he always has a chord or two in his songs, which you don't expect at all. But as soon as these chords are played, you realize that without them the song will turn into banality. Even John Lennon said that when he got stuck writing a new song, he always turned to To George. He would give him some unexpected harmonic twist, a strange chord, and the song would take on a face.
But this is not the main thing – you can work on a song for years, build a whole tower of Babel, and still stop the car. What George wrote and sang was always full of some kind of inner light, as if he was from another, correct, planet Earth - and his music helped us to see the right world around us.

I was lucky enough to know him a little personally, and I confirm that his love for India was true and deep, for life. George has shown not only with music, but also with his whole life that between the West and There is no abyss in the East – the whole abyss is only in our own mind. You have to be able to do this: write songs about the love of God, fashionable songs, famous songs – and such that you understand how he feels.
Sometimes I even want to quote the classics and say: "I owe all the best that is in me to George"
While still a Beatle, George bought himself a huge old house under London, in Henley-on-Thames, and retired there to live – away from the London crowd. He lived there for the rest of his life – not counting trips to another house, in Hawaii. He was very hospitable–to friends; to the rest of the world he was a hermit, an anchorite, a gardener. At home, he did gardening and music. His son Dhani says, "We are all wandering in the maze like experimental mice, and the father seemed to clearly see where he was going."
His last video was very simple: good musicians are sitting and playing an old song from the 30s. And all with such dignity and pleasure that it's just a sight to see. But then the camera cuts to George himself – and suddenly it takes your breath away: such elegant carelessness, such simplicity – you realize that you are in the presence of God.
He generally gave off the feeling that he was where none of us were, as if burned by the light of the stars.
And in this video, he has a slight smile on his face, as if both he and we, those who are watching this, are just playing at being human, but we know that this is a joke.
And you know what, I agree with him.
