I can’t remember how long the gap was between Help! and Rubber Soul, but there certainly had been one hell of a change in the relationship between the boys - mainly between John and Paul. It was very noticeable, and it made me quite sad in actual fact. Something had happened between those two albums, but I’m not sure what it was. That was the beginning of the end, really. There are seven levels of McLennon Hell

Level 1: Denial - What's this "McLennon"? Oh of course there are people that think they are in love. Wishful thinking but wouldn't that be fun ha ha ha

Level 2: Curiosity - I mean ok they were definitely platonic soulmates, right?

Level 3: Queering John - Oh wow seems like there's legitimate evidence that John was bisexual, I guess it's not that much of a stretch to imagine he was in love with Paul, that really changes things

Level 4: What Happened in India??

Level 5: Disillusionment of Paul's Immovable Heterosexuality - Oh they really wrote a lot of songs about each other huh. "I'm in love with a friend of mine," what's that mean Paul? Paul? Why are you so obsessed with queerness Paul? You don't have to mention John, Paul, no one asked!

Level 6: Letting Go of All Sanity - Look at the way they look at each other, it's not normal! Is it...... so crazy to think that they did? Paul is so private and repressed, he would keep that secret. What else could "waiting on the other side for your friends to go" mean??

Paul: And the cover story... you know that... the cover where we looked stretched, the photo's stretched... that was the kinda thing would happen then, which... we were all very into that kind of random, little exciting thing that would happen. The photographer was Bob Freeman and he'd taken some pictures round at John's house in Weybridge and we just had our new gear on, the polo necks, and we were doing straight mugshots, the four of us all posing. And he came... back in London he was, it was in someone's flat, and he was showing us, he had a little carousel of slides and he had a piece of cardboard stuck up on a little chair that was album cover sized, and he was projecting the photographs exactly on to it, cause you could imagine exactly how it would look then as an album cover... it was a kind of good way to do it. But just as he... we'd just chosen the photo, we said, well that one looks good... and we all liked, we all liked ourselves in one particular shot, and he was just winding up when the card it was on just fell backwards a little bit, and it elongated the photo and it stretched, and we went 'Oh!' we went, 'Can we have that! Can you do it like that?' and he said 'Well yeah, I can print it like that' and we said 'Yeah, that's it! Rubber soul! Hey-hey!' John: You see there's no great mysterious meanings behind all of this, it was just four boys, you know, working out what to call their new album

For this task I knew I couldn’t go it alone, so I did consult with Wings CEO @monkberryfields 🍓🪽 answers under the cut!

I’m going to preface this by saying that Paul’s coke princess era is my favorite, bar none. He looks like an ethereal fae gracing us with his presence, with his slightly more defined oval face, his huge eyes, his darling petal lips and button nose. Ugh! So taking that later look into account, my absolute earliest fav Paul look is going to be this one:

And where would we be without his Mad Day Out suit? I know I personally wouldn’t be living and breathing. Everything about it is wonderful. The pastel, the hair, the frills, the nips. I adore the peek of happy trail we get right below his navel-- ugh!

Next we move onto his solo and Wings era, and if I'm left to my own devices I'm just going to put every photo of Paul from the 70's, so he's my condensed list:

We're moving into DILF territory, and he knows it. He's really playing up the schoolteacher look in some of his fits from this era, and it's incredibly endearing to me. This is the Macca I grew up with, and when someone outside of BugsLand says his name, this is the McCartney I picture <3

Finally, I'm really digging his current look! He struggled for a bit in the early 2000's, but we're back baby!

And just know there's many, many, many more. Basically, whatever makes Paul look most like a futch lesbian, those are my favorite looks. Him and Joan Jett are my bisexual nightmare twins.
