venting under the cut
i know people have big feelings about darkfics/yandere/ect and i get it, i do. its not everyone's cup of tea and no one should read things that make them uncomfortable. but i would love for people just fucking tag pregnancy/parent fics. I have the tags blocked, i have the content filtered, and yet bc some of the posts don't say "pregnant" or "pregnancy" at all, they still show up!! bc guess what? they never have warnings or tags or ANYTHING that lets me know what im getting into!!
and this is not* the case i've seen in darkfics, where there often are multiple explicit warnings of whats included. but because pregnancy is seen as "vanilla" enough i guess it doesnt need a warning??? im just tired of it.
idk this isnt necessarily important but i just think if yall gave the same energy to tagging all fics appropriately instead of being the morality police for what other people write i think we'd all have a better time in the fandom but thats just my opinion.

Damn its like people aren’t allowed to have an opinion on this site.
So instead of relenting, I will repeat myself. I did not misread the post. I understand the post was saying that being punk requires both enjoying punk music and being inherently leftist. I get that. Really I do. I just. Do not agree with it. Sue me.
Punk is SO much more than just a music genre. (Though yes I am FULLY AWARE that it is a music based culture. And it started because of the music. And etc etc etc.) i’ve actually written an entire post on EVERYTHING ELSE INVOLVED IN PUNK CULTURE BESIDES THE FUCKING MUSIC (you can find it here)
I simply, in the year 2023. Do not understand WHY you would so heavily enforce the idea that someone HAS to like punk music to be a punk. If there are two people who are dressed alternatively, and engaged in leftist actions, it doesnt matter which of them likes punk music. To the outside world, both of them are troublesome punks. Hell punk used to just be a word used to refer to gay people. I hate the idea that there is this defined line between who qualifies as punk and who doesnt. Its a word with a definition. Words and definitions change and evolve over time. Get over it.
And even going back to just punk music. What even is punk music? How do you define the genre?? You dont! Because its SO diverse!!!!!! The only common thread is that the lyrics have leftist values! And if you want to go that route, a lot of hip hop artists or old country songs are actually SUPER leftist!! But you wouldnt call them punk. Is it the distorted sound? Well distortion goes all the way back to rock music in the 60s!! (And honestly probably further). The use of the word punk to describe music doesnt even start with punk music in the 60s/70s! IT GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1899
Sure we can all look at the Sex Pistols and agree that is punk music by a classic punk band. But what about Green Day? Or is that just alt rock? Or Rage Against the Machine? Are they too metal despite their obvious punk influences? Do you see what I mean??? Its all alternative. To anyone outside of these subcultures they dont care. It just. Gets WAY too gatekeepy for me with these kinds of stupid arguments. Just let people listen to whatever the fuck they want. I’d rather call someone listening to pop music but hates cops with a burning passion and is willing to do something about it a punk than someone more concerned about peoples music tastes than actual fucking problems in the world.
And you dont have to agree with me. Thats fine. You are entitled to your opinion as well. But next time, instead of assuming I’m stupid and being a prick about it, how about you just unfollow. Cause you can do that. Hell if I really annoy you, theres even a button to block me!

Do you think it's okay to completely separate artist from creation? Because I just found out a comic artist I really like is like against Transgender and wants to ignore race and all the bad stuff going on. I really like their work but their beliefs bother me. I dont know if I should continue to enjoy what I use to and separate artist from work, or to just unfollow. I'm not the type of person to try and force my views into others so I'm not gonna be harassing them to try and change their opinion
It depends on how you define ‘separate artist from creation’. Because there’s really two ways to do that. For the sake of this thought exercise let’s all imagine:
You have content you enjoy. You find out the author of that content is a less than stellar person. Maybe they support harmful causes, maybe they’re bigot and refuse basic respect to people different from them, maybe worldviews harm you and others that you love, etc.
Do you:
A) Pretend the author doesn’t exist but continue to consume the content while clapping your hands over your ears and going ‘LALALALALA’ and doing your best to forget who wrote it? Pretend Hatsune Miku wrote it instead? Separate the wonderful characters you’ve come to know and love, tear them from the hands of the author and say ‘they’re mine now, you never had them! I’ve assigned my own, healthier headcanons!’
OR
B) Acknowledge that their harmful worldviews will affect their content, regardless how indirectly... and consume the content anyway, but do your best not to support their views (i.e not following their main account, holding them responsible and not letting them get away with leaning on harmful/racist/outdated stereotypes)?

Here’s the thing though - if you picked B, you are NOT separating author from art. You are actively acknowledging that the author IS affecting their art - and aiming to minimize the harm caused through that content. You are already taking steps to protect others, and that does make a difference. That shows that you already know the answer to your own question.
We realistically cannot separate art from artist. Not fully. Nor, I would argue, should we attempt to do so!
In this media-saturated world, we all consume a LOT of content. Realistically, we cannot filter and check ALL of it - or all of its creators - to be 100% sure that we are only following/consuming only the most un-problematic of all people. It’s just not feasible and holding yourself to that standard is unrealistic.
But what we CAN all do is be critical. We can look at something that a transphobic person wrote and ask ‘does this content present harmful stereotypes?’ and we can ask ‘does this storyline have racist tropes?’ and etc.
I’m going to be frank - I consume what could considered ‘problematic’ content. Biggest example is probably Brooklyn 99. The thing is - it’s copaganda! And throughout the show, there are very clear, ill-disguised attempts to gloss over abuse to police power by using quirky lovable characters that are constantly breaking the law but end up as the good guys at the end of each episode! And this isn’t even the point of the show - it’s treated as a non-issue. At the beginning of season 5 they delve into prison system power abuse - but only really make it an issue for the ‘innocent good-guy cop Jake’. The next few episodes after the fact it shows - BLATANTLY - Jake and Holt screaming at and lying to a (Black!) suspect to get a confession out of him. It’s treated as the right thing to do! A quirky idea that good-guy Jake had!
Wanna get psychological whiplash? Watch When They See Us on Netflix and then watch Jake yelling at his suspect in the interrogation room. Ask yourself why those two are different, or why they are interpreted differently. Then ask why they aren’t, and shouldn’t be.
And when I watch Brooklyn 99 I have two options:
I can cover my ears and sing LALALA IT’S JUST A SHOW, I’M JUST HAVING FUN! or I can be critical and practice calling out the blatantly police-propoganda-y tropes when they come on-screen and evaluate the good vs. the bad and ask myself every once in a while ‘is the Good here outweighed by the Bad? Is there content here that I couldn’t get elsewhere?’
In the end, no one can stop you from consuming content. If you want to keep watching/reading - you will find a way. But ignoring the issues, turning away and trying to imagine away the bad parts... will ALWAYS leave you with less than the full picture. It’s far more harmful to pretend that everything is fine for the sake of making yourself feel comfortable than it is to just face it head-on and admit that the author will inevitably leave a part of their beliefs in their art.
When people read my stories - even something as removed as WD!Steven - they will inevitably be coming in contact with MY political views, even if they’re not obvious. And honestly, I wouldn’t want people to separate my art from myself.
I want to make it clear - in many cases, unfollowing/blocking is absolutely the best thing to do. I’ve done that for many creators that I realized were... not good people. But that sort of thing is for you to decide, and so I won’t just tell you ‘go unfollow them!’. It’s way more important that you make this judgement not because of peer pressure - but because you’ve thought about it and made the decision that makes the most sense for YOU.

Soooo I very obviously don’t know the whole situation with Noel but I read some of your asks and I saw people saying that they wished he would have made a more public statement regarding the “situation” to like apologize (???? Hopefully I’m not confusing you bc I very honestly am still trying to catch up myself lol) And I don’t like to make excuses for anyone but we all know he’s not active on social media unless he’s promoting his jobs and also I think that his age plays a factor in why he didn’t feel the need to make a big to-do or announcement. I doubt he’s following any young influencers who make notes app apologies 24/7 just to settle down their scandals, SOOO I honestly think that him unfollowing the cop was his way of righting his wrongs. I don’t think it even occurred to him that “hey the teens who follow me want me to write an explanation and apology”. I can say for myself that not even I know who I’m following half the time and once I see something on my feed that’s the only way I’m really aware of who I’ve chosen to follow. This year a lot of ppls true colors have been shown based on their political opinions and even their stances on blm and as a black female I took it among myself to unfollow ppl who did not support me and who were overall just not people I want to associate myself with. BUT GOING BACK ON TOPIC (sorry for the rant) with social media we only see what ppl WANT us to see so you’re following wtv image they’ve presented to the world unknowing of who these ppl really are. Once again idk the ins and outs of what happened but as far as I can tell so far is he happened to be following a bad person and when he realized that he unfollowed them. I don’t see why that needs to be hyper analyzed and dragged out. Cancel culture leaves absolutely no room to see both sides of any situation and in situations of blatant racism and homophobia an explanation is not needed but for something as vague as who someone’s following even after they’ve unfollowed them, I truly don’t think that this warrants a big to-do and ESPECIALLY not death threats. (Ik this is long and all over the place so feel free not to post it but I just wanted to get this out bc from the little bit I have learned this seems a bit blown out of proportion and I hope me saying thag doesn’t offend anyone)

Thank you! I agree. I think his age and how he's never usually on social media play a huge part in it. He unfollowed when he realized that person was problematic. I don't feel the need to announce every time I unfollow someone because I saw some shit I dont agree with. I get its different cause he's famous and I'm not but like noel doesn't use social media like all of us and influencers do. He uses it to promote his acting and when it was time to vote he promoted getting out there and voting to make a difference.
Cancel culture is very extreme and not always warranted. Yes for known racists, homophobes, antisemites, rapists, etc, cancel them and keep them accountable for their actions, but to wanna cancel someone for someone they followed when we don't know for a fact he even knows this person irl or if he even knew he was problematic.
Unfollowing, muting, and blocking people is the way to go. If you notice someone you're following posting shit you don't agree with or not posting when it comes to issues you care deeply about then please unfollow them, mute them or block them so you don't have to see them pop up again.
I literally cut a friend loose after almost a decade and blocked her on all social media. I didn't agree with anything she said when it came to covid or the BLM protests and then when I had surgery she didn't message me once. She isn't someone I need in my life. If I could cut someone out whos been in my life for that long, you can definitely unfollow some random ass person on social media because you don't agree with their opinions, politics, or whatever.
Anyways now I went off on a tangent LOL all this to say thank you for sharing and I agree with you!

Honestly anytime i see a post on clary dying or someone being like “i want her to die!!!” I literally have to unfollow and block them, and them wanting her to die because “it doesnt make since that cc would put this drama in and not follow through blah blah its bad writing” like... no... actually, its not bad writing, its what writers do, they make you think one thing and then change it, also people who want her to die just for the sake of twp im so annoyed, its bad writing to make a main+

RIGHT? Like it would honestly feel like a fucking cop out to kill Clary as a side character just because she’s no longer a main character. And especially since we wouldn’t get the point of view from Simon, Jace, Izzy, or even Luke and Jocelyn (the people that are going to be the most affected by her death). It’s bullshit, is what it is.
Honestly, the fact that so many people are so sure that Clary’s gonna die, and she’s had these damn dreams just makes me so sure that she’s not gonna die. (Though if she does, I swear by the angel, I will never pick up another Cassie Clare book again). It’s just too obvious and so in your face that it doesn’t make sense for it to actually happen, you know? My guess is though, something major is gonna happen and we’re gonna think that Clary’s dead for a bit. But she’s not actually gonna be.

Edit: I get why people are upset that Sophia is cast and not upset by Layla. Sophia was involved in the college admission scandal because Felicity (her mother) bribed her into college. And now she's cast in WHMs show. So I see why it doesn't sit well with people. It doesn't with me either but nepotism is a huge thing in Hollywood so I'm really not surprised by this one bit, and I don't think sophia is to blame since I doubt she knew her mother bribed her into school, but I could be wrong.
