View of Mount Whitney from the Best Western Plus Frontier Motel
flickr
View of Mount Whitney from the Best Western Plus Frontier Motel by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view from outside a motel room in Lone Pine, looking to the west to the peaks and ridges around Mount Whitney. My thinking in composing this image was to zoom in and have those ridgelines and peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains filling up much of the image itself. A little bit of blue skies would be above, but they had a slight haze to it, and I wanted to minimize that. The other thing that caught my attention was the way the ridges seemed to layer themselves one after the other leading to Mount Whitney.

꧁ eddie x female reader
a multi chapter mini series— based on thoroughfare by ethel cain

Tumblr media
summary: jumping into his truck at seventeen, eddie takes a journey in hopes to find love. years pass with no such luck, along the way he stumbles across you, a timid drifter who reluctantly agrees to join him, heading west. you’ve never trusted men, but something in those kind, deep colored coffee eyes stirs up a feeling you’ve never felt before. strangers to lovers trope, one bed trope.
triggers: 18+ smut
author’s note: no upside down, eddie was raised by his mom and dad in florida and they were in love.

The wet shell of a sunflower seed stuck to the tip of your finger. Slicked with salted spit and the tart bite of cherry chapstick, you hung your hand out of the passenger window, waiting for the western wind to blow the husk from your finger.
His thumb rubs against the rough edges of the flint wheel of his zippo, the sweet tang of tobacco invading your nose as the flame sparks leaving a burning cherry on the white paper. A slight chap to his lips from too much sun yesterday at the motel pool in BullHead City, you had supposed. Still, you couldn’t tear your eyes away from him. The only time you could was when his eyes caught yours, daring you to look away.
The way he stared at you with a smirk twisted on his mouth took every bit of breath from your lungs. Holding your gaze in a cozy embrace with the deep warmth of his russet colored eyes until you finally forced yours to break away and look out the window instead. Bottom lip bit between your lips as a growing heat travels over the apples of your cheeks.
If you would have looked back at him you’d have noticed the way he licked his lips as he watched you sigh as if you hadn’t been breathing. Snapping another sunflower seed between your teeth before putting them on the crest of your lips to put them out of the window— he had your movements memorized. Each more tantalizing than the next.
Neither of you were able to deny the tension between you lately, letting it build and fester, aching for relief in the form of pleasure.
The last eight weeks had started to wear heavy on your chest, and you found yourself daydreaming about the beginning of this adventure, like a record on an endless spin to your favorite song.
Tumblr media
Not a single radio station would come in wherever the hell it was in Texas he was right now. With every crank of the tuning dial, only the agonizing noise of static strained through the speakers to keep him company as he drove along this highway that never seemed to end.
He cursed himself for not buying a map at the gas station he filled the truck up at this morning. His gut instinct usually guided him on which roads to take, and today was no different. Only today felt like he was pulled by something else, something deeper within himself.
The sky was a mix of cyan and cotton clouds, already hot for May, he was just about to give up on the radio before he popped over a hill and an oldies station came in clear as could be. And something else came into view, plenty far away yet.
Tumblr media
Hot wind whipped at your shirt, providing next to nothing for comfort as you trudged along the broken asphalt. You now understood why this place was called the Lone Star State, because you haven’t seen a damn soul in miles. For today, you didn’t mind the loneliness. Leaving home, years ago, you didn’t have a destination in mind, only the knowledge that you needed to get the hell out.
Whatever highway you were on looked to be deserted. As if the state built a multi-laned monstrosity elsewhere and gave up on this slow, lonely stretch, leaving it to the elements. Prairie grass poked through the splintered road, tumbleweeds swayed in the ditches, collecting and tangling as one like a tawny bundle of barbed wire.
Looking behind you, a vehicle showed in the distance like a wavy mirage in the desert. You had half a thought to stick your thumb out and catch a ride to the nearest bus station, but when the vehicle got closer your conscience took over, and anxiety thumped in your chest.
Please don’t stop, please please.
The engine hummed to a lower gear, and you automatically put a hand on the pistol at your waistband. Moving further over to the side of the road where whoever was driving could see that you weren’t interested in their good deed, you kept your head down and kept walking.
Tires slowed and you went into a small panic, wishing you had something sharp to hold between your fingers, but the barren highway offered no such vice.
You heard faint music as the vehicle got closer, crawling almost to a stop as you quickened your steps hoping they would just keep going and leave you be.
“Pretty hot out today… need a lift?”
The voice felt like velvet on your skin, a warmth you’d never known. Endearingly charming, no southern twang like someone from Texas would have. You ignored him, letting the crunch of gravel on your worn boots answer instead.
You had never been given the luxury to trust someone, and you’d be damned if you were gonna start today with some stranger on the side of the road. Heart rate kicking up, you all but bolted to avoid him.
“Baby don’t run, I’ll take you anywhere,” his drawl wrapped around you like a vice, soft and pillowy, and finally your curiosity got the better of you, as you came to a halt. You wanted to look this asshole in the eyes and flash him the pistol you kept, maybe fire a warning shot over the hood of his truck so he’d get the message. That no, in fact you did not need a ride, not from him.
Stopping so his passenger window lined up with you in the center you eyed the only other beating heart on the side of the road.
His hair was past his shoulders, brown and wavy, more than likely frizzy in high humidity. Eyes that were shaped like Bambi’s colored like a bottomless cup of coffee without creamer. His nose sat with a fading sunburn painting along his cheeks, each dwelling a poked dimple in the center. And you swore the key to Heaven was buried in his smile.
When he spoke it was clear that his intentions weren’t to cause you any harm. Minutes ticked by as he waited for your answer.
“Hey, do you wanna see the West with me?”
It was a simple question asked from the quirked mouth of a guy you’d never met before, you would have remembered those eyes in any setting. He leaned an elbow out his window as he threw the truck in park, twisting in his seat to face you a little more. A cigarette dangling from his large hand.
The butter colored sun shone against his caramel curls like a breakfast roll full of sticky sugar, the same light changing his eyes into a whiskey auburn.
He was a complete stranger, but what was even stranger was your one word answer that spread that million dollar grin further onto his face than you thought humanly possible.
You moved your hand from that handle of the gun in your tattered jeans, bearing more holes than actual threads of denim. It was meant for situations just like this, and you had nabbed it from your dad right before you walked out the front door for the very last time.
Instinct told you to run, but something in those dark eyes brought you a wave of calm, whispering out as if you’d known him for years. Your boots had already blistered your heels from walking this far, so what the hell?
Pressing a thumb into the release of the door handle, you swung yourself and your knitted bag into the moth-bitten navajo rug that covered the seat.
His smile didn’t fade, never so much as creased into a frown as he waited for you to get situated. Before he put his truck into drive he explained where he was going.
He was making the grand gesture of looking for love like the kind he grew up watching with his own mom and dad. Explaining that love like that was out there waiting for him, and he was determined to find it, no matter the distance.
Suspicion jumped to your brow, and you tried to stifle the scowl on your lip. “What?” he chirped, a little twist to his lips, “don’t believe in stuff like that?”
This bastard clearly didn’t know heartache the way you were practically related to it. You sigh lazily before looking over at him. Trying not to break his dreams before he even had the chance to realize what a waste of time it was, you simply murmur, “honey, love’s never meant much to me, but I’ll come with you if you’re sure that’s what you need.”
After years of living and growing without being loved, it had become almost useless, something heard in songs or read in books, surely it wasn’t real. But hell, you’d humor this man whose smile danced like a western sunset against a salty ocean breeze, what was the worst that could happen?
A large calloused hand reached across the cab of the truck, and you shook it with a small grin as his voice rubbed like silk across your soul, “I’m Eddie.”
Tumblr media
And so it began, the journey to find a love daring to be something greater than anything he’d ever known, hell bent and determined it was out there, wherever that may be.
He had asked about your life. Never pushing when your answers were too short, or ended the conversation entirely. Letting you have your space, he built a trust between the two of you that you weren’t sure about at first.
The roads were desolate, and you couldn’t imagine walking along them alone. You thanked whoever cared that your thoroughfare crossed into his, almost as if destiny had placed you there. Knowing you needed a friend after leaving the only thing you’d ever known and not having a single soul to rely on.
But as time went by, you realized just how much you could rely on him.
Tumblr media
That first day, he drove until the windshield bled to ink. Stars dotted across the sky once the sun went to rest, and he encouraged you to follow suit, pulling a hooded sweatshirt from behind his seat and tossing it towards you. Your hesitation told him all he needed to know, that the uncertainty of him was rooted deep. Too deep for you to let your guard down around him.
That pearl handle poked out from your hip and his kind eyes met the scared look in yours. He rubs his lips together before he speaks calmly, “you uhm,” he looks over at you to show how serious this was to him, even if you couldn’t see it in the dark, “you don’t have to worry about using that with me… I’m not that kind of guy.”
His innocence spoke through his eyes in words he hadn’t said, showing you that he wasn’t lying, that you could trust him. You took a deep breath, wondering if you were insane for feeling comfortable with a guy you just met, but it wasn’t long before you whisper, “okay.”
When you snuck a peek over at him, his face was lit by the dim lights of the dash, a smirk nestled on his lips, cheeks welled with the deepest dimples you’d ever seen, and your shoulders eased for the first time since hopping in.
Neither of you spoke for the rest of the night. Your head resting on the window, his sweatshirt rolled under your neck as you fell into a sleep so tender and warm you felt like a baby being lulled to bed as he sang along to the radio.
Tumblr media
The heat from the window warmed your cheek when you woke, leaving a less than glamourous mark. Letting out an embarrassingly long yawn, you stretch your arms above your head, feeling your back crack into submission.
“Shit, ‘m sorry, how long did I sleep?” you ask, covering your mouth again from another yawn.
Eddie smiled tiredly, his hair was wrapped into a bun at the base of his neck, sunglasses topping his nose, pushing up from his cheeks as he grins, “don’t apologize for sleeping when you’re tired,” he said, shrugging, “besides, you probably would’ve woken up if I crashed.”
A chuckle hits your dry throat and you cough, “where are we?”
“Still in Texas believe it or not,” he groans, turning it into a long yawn, holding a hand to his mouth, swallowing a bit, “I hoped we could’ve made it to New Mexico before I pulled over but I’m starting to think that ain’t gonna happen.”
You figured he would have stopped to sleep at some point in the night, even if it was just for a few hours. Guilt throttled you at the thought of him staying up while you were asleep. “I can drive while you take a nap.”
“Nah,” he says with a lazy smile, looking over at you, “not that I care if you drive my truck or not, I just think we could both use some decent sleep, watch a little tv, eat, plus… I need a shower.”
Taking a whore’s bath in the gas station sinks had kept you clean, but you almost cried outright at the thought of water, cold or hot you couldn’t care less, running down the length of your body. But the lack of money burning in your pocket stopped that dream in its tracks.
You had a couple hundred bucks left after selling off your car before leaving home. The cost efficient option would be to drive while he slept. “It’s really not a big deal, I promise I’m a good driver.”
The charm you tried to emanate when pulling out your license to show him that you indeed weren’t lying, fell flat as Eddie waved you off, “deodorant only lasts so long before we’ll have to ride with our heads outta the window.”
He laughs in your place as you stare out of the windshield, mind racing over the trouble of being able to afford a motel room.
“C’mon,” he smirks, that same lazy smile stretched on his face, you wondered if he ever got mad. “We survived almost a whole day together, if I was gonna rob you I would’ve done it already.”
“It’s not that,” you say, picking at your nails, fighting the urge to bite them to shreds, “I wasn’t walking because I wanted too…”
Wheels turn in a tired mind as Eddie nearly chokes when he realizes what you meant.
“Don’t worry about it,” he confirms, brushing you off as if it wasn’t a big deal that you’d be bunking with him for free, and when your facial expressions didn’t change, he lowered his voice, and took off his sunglasses, “seriously sweets, you’re doing me a favor keeping me company, ‘m not gonna make you pay for a trip you didn’t plan, okay?”
You sighed, and shook your head yes.
Tumblr media
The nearest motel was a hole in the wall type of place. Adhering to the kind of people that either paid by the hour or stayed for weeks at a time. The perk being it was next to a gas station where you refused to let Eddie pay for the armful of snacks he had carried to the counter. Including two hotdogs that you couldn’t be bothered wondering how long they’d been spinning in the warmer.
His boots clunked against the sidewalk as he jumped from the bed of the pickup hauling his duffle bag over his shoulder, the hotel keys wrapped around his forefinger. Outside of you both relieving yourselves on the empty shoulder of the highway last night, this was the first time you’d seen just how tall he was.
He squints in the sun and cocks his head, “bet you a dollar the carpet is orange.”
Tumblr media
Room 8 consisted of two full sized beds, a lamp between the two, an arm chair and a small television. A stiff neon brochure for adult channels lay next to the remote, and you scrunched your nose as Eddie pushed it to the floor with the heel of his boot.
Laying out the snacks neatly on the table, you hand him the other hot dog, licking a drop of mustard from your palm. He thanked you, and took a bite consuming almost half of it before dropping onto the bed closest to the door, laying flat on his back.
Having four walls around you gave you a sense of peace you hadn’t been expecting. Slipping off your shoes you wiggled your bare toes and sat on the bed facing away from him, rolling your socks into one another.
“How’s the hotdog?” you asked over your shoulder, moving your bag between the side of your bed and the wall for the bathroom.
A muffled sound comes from the other side of the room as he shovels another bite in, “rubbery, but not too bad for having been made at midnight.”
You snort and swing your legs into the bed. Grabbing the hotdog from the comforter and peeling back the white paper around it, taking a small bite. It was warm, and tasted a hell of a lot better than the moldy ham sandwich you ate yesterday. A satisfied hum leaves your mouth and you giggle.
“Hotdogs for breakfast… don’t think I’ve ever had this before.” You laugh again before taking another bite of the squishy snack. Eddie looks up as he chews the remaining bite, realizing this was the first time he’d ever heard you laugh loud enough for him to hear, what a beautiful sound.
“Stick with me, we’ll have breakfast for dinner, too,” his tongue pokes out to lick a smear of ketchup from the corner of his lip, and he yawns loud and proud.
You cross your feet beneath your legs, a content little smile on your face. “Do I still owe you a dollar if the carpet is also brown and green?”
Your combined laughter echoes across the wood paneling and the pictures of dogs playing poker. The two of you joke about the severely dated room, agreeing that this was probably the place to stay in its prime. But the sheets were clean and that’s about all you could ask for at this point.
Eddie’s eyes were nearly closed as he scrubs large hands down his face, his voice strained, “mind if I shower ‘fore I fall asleep?”
“Not at all,” you say, jumping from the bed and looking through the snacks to find the licorice, “take all the time you need.”
He tosses the remote to your bed and unzips his bag, pulling out a toothbrush and a clean pair of boxer briefs, a minute passes and he scratches his head before diving back into the bag, yanking out a folded pair of sweatpants.
Sighing as he peels off his boots, he walks to the bathroom door and before shutting it, he pokes his head back out, a curious little grin on his lips as he asks earnestly, “you’re not gonna run away, are you?”
You swallow the bite of licorice and smile back, “think you’re stuck with me, if that’s cool with you?”
His grin broadens to a cheshire smile and he says he won’t be long, promising to save some hot water.
Neither of you can quit the grin on your lips until the door unlocks, and Eddie mutters “cool,” to himself before leaving the steamed bathroom.
Tumblr media
Diners with smudge stained windows and siding that was warped from the sun's rays, came few and far between on those lone, dust covered roads. Eddie had pulled into almost every one. “Never know when the next one will pop up, sweetheart,” he smirked, sending a wink your way that had your stomach fluttering.
Each menu, although stickier at some places than others, was relatively the same. Eggs, Bacon, Toast. Waffles at the fancier joints or maybe a bowl of fruit alongside a flapjack.
He watched you intently as your eyes scanned the menu, keeping his promise of having breakfast for supper a few week into your trip. His own stomach had been grumbling since you packed up from the last motel somewhere on the border of Oklahoma and New Mexico. A wrong turn near McCamey had taken you North to Amarillo, three hundred miles in the completely opposite direction.
Instead of screaming about the wasted fuel, Eddie had only shrugged. He was excited to cross into the panhandle, and to make a check along the list of states you’d scribbled onto a napkin a few days into the trip to cross off as you came through them.
That quiet, suspicious drifter he had picked up three weeks ago seemed to blossom with life the more he peeled back the bricks that you had surrounded yourself with. But Eddie was charismatic, easy to talk to, and you found yourself deep in the throes of explaining things to him you haven’t talked about in years.
When your cheeks would heat and embarrassment creeped up your neck, you apologized for talking too much. He only shook his head, a small smile on his lips as he said that he didn’t mind, he wanted to know more.
The waitress strolled back over with a cigarette hanging from her lip, a gray ash practically a mile thick on it as she grumbled about the specials and set glasses of water on the table—ice already melted besides a sliver of a stubborn cube.
“I’ll take a cup of coffee,” he charmed, folding the menu placing his hands on top of it, “two eggs hard fried, a couple of sausage patties and wheat toast, also one of those slices of lemon meringue pie I saw in the display window.”
Without so much as a grunt, the waitress lifted her eyes to look you over. Setting down the vinyl menu, you place your order and lick your lips at the thought of the homemade lard crust on the rhubarb pie.
Looking out the window to the dry landscape, you sigh with a breath of content. You had never been this far west before, never been anywhere really besides the small town you grew up in.
Two coffees sit in front of each of you and Eddie thanks the waitress, a dimpled grin on his cheeks as he opens a packet of sugar. Warm eyes look at you as he stirs the coffee into a swirl, “Nothing like home, huh?”
A smile presses to your lips and you sip the bitter liquid, chipped porcelain against your front teeth, “definitely not, the air is dry here.”
“Yeah,” he agrees, slipping the spoon into his mouth to clean the coffee up, taking a big gulp of the burnt— probably microwaved— concoction, “it is, but that’s the beauty in the journey, exploring different places, meeting new people.”
He tucks a curl behind his ear, a tiny silver hoop in his lobe, you hadn’t noticed before and you ask, “you keen on picking up strangers on the side of the road?”
A laugh bubbles from his throat, and he smiles big showing all of his teeth, “in all the years I’ve been on the road, I never have, not until you,” he takes a sip of his coffee, a pretty blush rides on his cheeks, “guess I haven’t run out of luck just yet.”
You hide your own smile, itching your nose, “how long has it been?”
Eddie thinks for a minute, “well, I left Florida when I was seventeen..,” he adds up the years on his fingers with this thumb moving to each one, “… shit,” he says with a smirk, “almost nine years now.”
He was older, not by much, but you had both left at a younger age. Calling the open road and warm air home for years. Living like a Steve Earle song sporting a two pack habit and a motel tan, it seemed like fate put you on the same road that he was traveling that day.
But you push that thought away, Eddie was looking for love, and you were just tagging along like a pet, a friend at best.
“Do you ever miss it?”
He stretches himself across the booth, arms on the back of the peeling seat, pearl snaps straining against the denim from the broadness of his chest, and you find it hard not to look, “Nah, I’ll go back someday, me and my girl.”
That flutter happens again in your stomach and you feel almost nauseous at how infectious his smile is.
You spend the rest of dinner that way, trying to shove down a grin with each bite of breakfast food as the sun fell behind the mountains. Letting the butterflies swarm, with each time he looked into your eyes.
Not knowing that Eddie was also slowly losing his own battles, leaving with something more in his stomach that was sweeter then the stiff meringue on that damn lemon pie.

Perdition 1.4
< >
I hung up. I stared at the phone in my hand, its screen showing an old rotary telephone slamming into its receiver.
Numbly, I watched it repeat several times before it faded away into the black of the dead screen. Why had I done that?
What am I doing?
I broke into a sprint down the road, running as fast as I could to the woods.
*****
The woods of Old Hill were untouched. Serene, tranquil, and still easing itself awake from the dusty silence of early morning. I tore through the trees at a sprint, thin vines and branches tearing at my coat as I sped over the cold packed dirt and gnarled forest roots.
I was following a creek, and I was relatively sure it was the same one that Noel meant. I’d seen the maps of the land in the museums, but those had never held much truth when it came to small details like a small creek in the heavy western woods. Noel's parent's mansion had been built only a few decades ago, so I was guessing at a ghost.
I slowed as I approached a large fallen basswood tree, leaning on it as I caught my breath. I really wasn’t made for running, and my lungs screamed with the icy air pulling and pushing out of them. As I sat on the cool bark, I faced the way I’d come, and recognized it.
I’d been here before, with Noel, when she needed a break from her homework, or life in general. This was near the right spot.
“Noel!” I shouted, turning around on the tree to search for her. The quiet, yet alive chatter of the woods slowed as my voice rung out, then returned as it died.
A woodpecker stabbed a rhythm into a far away tree, and the forest all together went on uncaring. I swore under my breath, and moved my legs to straddle the cold dead tree like a horse.
The felled basswood spanned the creek, and I stared down its length as I caught my breath. Moving my gloved hand down the trunk, I found my glove was sticking to something.
It was a carved heart. The injured wood was green and fresh, sap building up and out at the edges of the cut.
The letters in the heart read N + J, then a date. 2-3-23. Very fresh. I stared at the ‘N’, brushing the older sap aside with my thick gloved digits.
Natalie.
The name still burned painfully in my heart, incorrect and shameful in the memories it wrought. One word from a well meaning stranger, one reminder of the date of the accident, that’s all it took.
February 15th, 2020. The night was alive in my mind again, without my asking. I turned my head up, to face the woods.
The woods, as many dark and cold nights on the road had taught me, could be very dangerous. Refusing to drive or even be driven after the accident, I had backpacked my way down from New York.
I’d thought the trip would be quick; Google Maps said ten days, and I thought I'd be in Old Hill in nine, maybe eight days, easy.
After the money for inns and motels had run out, I had realized that walking worked on the same kind of time that hospitals and classes right before lunch did: Slow time.
Time that stretches on until you're sunburnt and dehydrated, until you want to turn back, but that would make things even worse, and everyone back home doesn’t want you there anyway, so just keep on heading down I-81 counting the mile markers.
Slow time traps you in this until your eyes roll into the back of your skull, and you’re willing to sleep on a pile of rusty nails because at least they don’t fucking honk at you for having the gall to walk on the shoulder instead of in the gluttonous mud trench that sucks your falling-apart-shoes down its shit-coated-throat.
So, after a long day of trudging, the sun would go down, sometimes obligingly slow, sometimes slipping right out of slow time and into blink-and-you’ll-miss-it time, diving below the horizon and leaving you soaking wet, struggling with two damp sticks to make a fire.
This, however, was preferable to the perils of the interstate’s shoulder and its many bored, cloying cops and just-like-me vagrants.
If I had to choose, though, it’d be the vagrants. I’d shared a few kind fires with a number of them, sometimes learning their names and their stories, sometimes sitting in uneasy silence until we wandered off to sleep in private.
As the weeks wore on, I had been moving into a cold front, and not sleeping in front of the fire had become impossible.
More often than not, I’d made camp in a thin layer of trees that lined a highway-side property. Sometimes you’d need to hop a fence, which started out hard, but by the second week was routine.
This was technically and legally trespassing, but a camo sleeping bag and a good spot usually got you through the night without disturbance. Usually.
More than once, I’d been woken by something rummaging through my belongings, sometimes even the coat I’d been sleeping in. Sometimes it’d be curious and annoyed animals, but most times it had been people. The cops had always been the worst.
“What you’re doing is illegal,” they’d say, then look at me confused and finish either with “Sir,” or, more often, “Ma’am.” Always with disapproval in their voice and always using more force than needed.
Sometimes they’d let me move on, or I’d get a ride to their office, where they called my father, confirmed he knew where I was, then bewilderedly let me go, usually with a stern warning.
Most cops, when they understood, had offered food and drink for my trip. Some had even offered rides, which I graciously denied. Some offered neither, and just let me go.
One, the worst, had left me locked up in the little town’s singular cell for three days and three nights. It was just outside of West Virginia, right after I’d crossed the Kentucky border.
Jessup, as the nothing little two-road town was called, apparently had trouble keeping folk around. Or so I was told by Jessup’s top boozer, who said his name was Jesse. He’d already been in the cell when I was thrown in.
The officer who’d found me on the side of the road, a mean mugging ugly woman, had given Jesse her meanest mug as she walked away with a clipboard securely tucked beneath one arm.
Jesse of Jessup played harmonica, and drank like a fish. In the morning he was always set free, but at night, he was brought to the cell, what he lovingly and drunkenly called ‘Jesse’s Little Corner of Jessup’.
On my last night in his town, he’d snuck in a small bottle of Fireball, a deck of cards, and his dirty harmonica, still wet from its play in the bar. After the mean-mugger had left for the night, Jesse showed me how to play Hearts, Bullshit, Garbage, and the 'ca.
He was good, and I told him as much. In his jovial way, he corrected me: “I’m not good,” I remembered him slurring, “I’m mean. ‘Jesse,’ you should say. ‘You play a meaaaaan har-moan-i-cah,’ you should be saying.”
So I did, and he cheered. We shared no campfire, but did huddle and did dance around the rattling radiator, him blowing sharply into the ‘cah and me stomping my boots and clapping my hands.
He’d thanked me for my company, and kissed me gently on the cheek. He’d reeked of alcohol and worse, but I thanked him for his good humor, and let him sleep.
After the mean-mugger had exhausted all of her attempts to find me guilty of various crimes, she’d let me go. She had demanded I shower first, staring me down with a disappointed grandmotherly glare. So, thanks to her, I walked out of Jessup and up the highway on-ramp cleaner than I’d been in weeks.
The memory of the mean-faced officer set a worry ablaze in my stomach as I stared down the creek. Again, the stab of the woodpecker cut through the wood’s idle chatter. Why was I out here?
Why in the world had I ignored direct orders from an officer of the law, when they knew my name and phone number? It gnawed at me. I’d never done anything like this.
I finally crossed the log, and stepped off of it onto the other side of the creek. “Noel!” I shouted out again, this time more of a bark. A quick check of the woods revealed nothing but the quiet apathy that suffused the trees. Wasting my time, when she could be in danger. What the fuck am I do-
“Hands up,” a thin, scared voice said from behind me. I recognized the slight southern accent.
“Noel,” I said, half turning my head. “I-”
“I said hands up!” She was shouting now, and I turned to face her with my hands up.
Noel, almost thirteen and dressed in stained Hello Kitty pijamas, held a rifle aimed at my chest. The lever action rifle was almost comically large in her arms, and I laughed nervously, falling, then stepping backwards as she approached me slowly, gun held level against her shoulder. She was trying not to cry.
“Where is my father,” she asked in a broken voice, screwing up her face in a grimace.
“I-I don’t know, Noel, what are you doing? I came here to help you,” I blurted out, still holding my hands in the air carefully. “Please, put the gun down.”
She shook her head. “Answer me,” she said, waving it in the air. She stood on the basswood I had crossed the creek on, and faced me, searching my face for a clue.
“I don’t know,” I repeated, feeling the cold press of a tree against my back. The creek babbled quietly next to us, and I stared at her. We both stood, unmoving.
Carefully, she stared at me, then raised the gun to point at my head. “Stop fucking lying!” she barked at me. I flinched, closing my eyes.
“I’m not! The cops said you were missing, nothing about your dad! I don’t know what the hell is going on, I just want you to stop pointing that thing at me,” I said, breathing heavily.
“Bullshit,” she spat, the curse sounding foreign in her light voice. “Don’t move,” she said, and braced the rifle against her with one arm as she dug in her pocket for something. Then she threw it at me, and adjusted her grip on the gun.
Her phone landed next to me in the leaves, the screen lighting up to show a picture of Noel and her mother, smiling happily in a selfie. I looked up at her, facing the glare of the rifle’s blackened metal barrel. She stared at me, raw anger in her eyes.
“You know the passcode,” she growled. “Open it. Watch the video.” I blinked, then nodded, crouching slowly and taking my right hand down to put in the numbers. 9-2-1-2. Her birthday.
The phone opened, showing a paused recording of a computer monitor. The woodpecker stabbed his staccato into a nearby tree. I tapped on the screen, then pressed play.
The video was a recording of the security system in the house I’d lived in until yesterday, portrayed in black and white. It was a view from the top of the grand staircase, watching the front door and most of the upstairs balcony, and the time in the bottom left corner read 2:03 A.M..
Noel, holding the camera in the video, was quietly and carefully breathing, the view slowly moving with her breath. The time in security footage flipped to 2:04 A.M.. The real Noel’s breathing suddenly broke out in a gentle shaking wheeze, I wasn’t sure if she was sobbing, or laughing. “Keep watching,” she choked, seeing I was looking up at her.
Car headlights streamed through the front door’s windows, casting shadows on the wall of the balcony floor. The balustrade’s shadows fled quickly across the wall, then slowly melted away as the headlights died. A moment passed, and then the door opened. Noel’s father walked in.
Kyle Montgomery was a tall man, ambiguously young but mature and well kept. Grey was seeping in at the top of his scalp, peppering his blond, jaw length hair. Carefully hanging his keys on a hook near the door, he stared at himself in the full length mirror next to the door, straightening out his thin mustache and checking his jawline.
He mussed up his hair, then turned his head back and forth to check if it was correctly incorrect. Nodding in approval, he shrugged off his heavy business coat, and let it drop to the floor as he walked up the stairs. He shed his suit and loosened his tie, leaving him with just a tailored pinstripe button up tucked into perfect black slacks.
As he rose to the top of the stairs, he stopped and carefully undid the highest button of his shirt, the tie hanging loosely about his chest like an ascot.
Then, he paused, staring down at the mess of his coat on the ground, the stairs, then the hall the opposite way, where his wife and child were asleep. He looked small in the video, and suddenly very tired. Still facing his bedroom, he raised his hand gently to his mouth, and bit down softly on it.
He turned to face my bedroom, biting down on his own flesh hard enough to draw a bead of blood. He walked to my door, then knocked on it, drawing his wounded hand to his side, near his hip. He looked as if he were going to draw a sword, though nothing was there, just his right hand hovering a few inches away from his left hip.
The door opened, and I was standing in the crack. I was dressed in pijamas, and looked at him confused. He said something, the recording silent. In the past, I nodded, widening the door.
My brain felt like it was dropped in a bath of ice water, pure confusion washing over me. “What the fuck?” I said aloud, watching myself open the door further, letting him step in. I walked away, disappearing into the room as he slipped through the doorway, then closed it.
I stared at my door in the video, nauseated. “Noel,” I said, staring up at her from the floor of the forest. “I don’t remember this.” My voice was cracking, confusion and fear seeping into my words from my core.
“Bullshit,” she croaked. She readjusted the grip on the rifle. “I’ve literally seen you do it. I watched you open that door for him! I don’t know what you’re doing in there, but it’s got to be why he’s gone. Where is he?”
“Noel,” I pleaded, “That’s not me. There’s no way, I’m not lying. I wouldn’t do that to you, or your mom,” I said. “Beli-”
“I don’t believe you,” she shouted, almost sobbing now. “You’re a liar. You stole my dad, or killed him, or something, ‘cause you knew it wasn’t right. Almost every night at two A.M., since you got here. Look!” She gestured towards her phone with the rifle.
I looked down carefully, cringing away from the gun as it came back up to point at me. Noel in the video was shaking, watching as her father left my room, five minutes after he had entered it.
He looked the same as when he’d entered, save for the blood and bite mark on his hand. They were gone. He walked calmly down the stairs, grabbed his coat, and left the house. The car’s headlights cast the familliar shadows in reverse.
The camera spun, and the mouse on the desktop shakily moved to a new folder, reading 2/13/23. Two days ago. The mouse maneuvered to the video file labeled 200, the second file in the folder, and opened it.
Almost on the dot at 2:03 A.M., Mr. Montgomery stepped into the foyer, shrugged his coat onto the floor, then climbed the stairs.
This time, he didn’t pause on the way to my door to bite his hand, stopping only to knock, clearly hover his hand over his empty hip, then enter my room.
I hadn’t even looked up at him. I’d just let him in.
“What the fuck,” I whispered hoarsely.
The mouse skimmed the video to five minutes later, when Kyle exited punctually, closing the door after him carefully, then taking the stairs two at a time to leave the mansion.
The video then clicked through random nights at two A.M., watching the same process occur many times over, sped up.
Sometimes he bit his hand, sometimes he just knocked. Always, his hand reached for the empty space at his left hip. I watched, silently, until the video ended suddenly in the middle of a night.
Noel had been staring at me the entire time, burning with silent rage. “Just tell me.”
I took a deep breath, and sat on the cold, packed dirt. “I don’t know, Noel. That’s not me. There’s no way…”
I wasn’t one to repress memories. My worst traumatic memories, I could remember in painful detail, burned into the fabric of my being. It could be an actor, but no, I’d been there at two A.M., almost every weeknight for a year. I could very distinctly remember my nights, they were usually taken up with studying and listening to music.
A coldly horrible idea formed in my head. He could have been drugging me to make me forget. Something in a drink, or something in food. He hadn’t been carrying anything in with him…
But it could’ve been in his pocket. I writhed in disgust, and I drew my knees up to my chest, feeling my breath hitch inside me as I stared emptily at the phone.
“What the fuck was he doing to me,” I said, hollow, not really there, not really meaning to. What had he done to me? Why couldn’t I remember? If he was drugging me inside of my room, how had I let him in? Would I let that man in my room if he knocked? No. Definitely no. “What the fuck,” I whispered, rocking slightly.
“Parker?” Noel asked softly.
“No,” I stated, almost to myself. “It’s a fake, a fake video or a fake set that he made to set me up. It’s just an actor, just…” Noel was staring at me, shaking her head.
“What do you mean?” She asked, lowering the rifle a little, stepping towards me.
“He was never home, he could’ve been, I don’t know, setting this up? There’s no way I’d let him into my room. I don’t even like your father as a person, let alone,” I stopped, feeling bile rise in my chest. “No. This isn’t real.” I stated firmly, and felt like I was coming back to myself, at least a little.
“No, Parker,” she said, stepping back again and raising the rifle. “I watched you do it. After I recorded this, I stayed up to watch you. He knocked, you let him in.”
“No,” I pleaded.
“Please, don’t lie,” Noel whispered.
“Stop calling me a fucking liar! I don’t remember any of this!” I was shouting now, on my knees in front of her.
"Just tell me the truth!" She cried, matching my intensity.
"I am!" I screamed I picked up the phone, throwing it back to her harder than I needed to. She staggered backward, shocked.
"Liar." Noel almost growled the word, dripping with resentment.
She bent to pick up her phone, momentarily hugging the rifle against her chest, hand still on the trigger guard. It was pointed at me. My eyes darted up to Noel's. She wasn’t looking at me.
What do you do?

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (1993)
Thirty years ago, the American TV landscape was a world apart from the one we know today. Broadcast networks and syndicated local markets still ruled the roost, the Internet was just starting to have an influence, and cable had a few powerhouses but was still fairly expensive. Perhaps most importantly, while serialized storytelling wasn’t nonexistent-soap operas were popular in daytime, and network dramas and sitcoms like Hill Street Blues and Cheers had made inroads in terms of story arcs and long-term character development even within episodic structures-it was still a relatively fresh concept. In terms of sci-fi genre fare, largely episodic TV was still the order of the day with series like the various Star Trek entries or Quantum Leap. And the televised Western was relatively dead by comparison. Thus we come to The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., a one-season hybrid mash-up on FOX that is practically tailor-made for the designation of “cult classic”. How does it hold up in our streaming age?
Developed by screenwriters Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Jeffrey Boam (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2 and 3), and inspired by Western serials of old, Brisco’s pilot episode picks up in 1893. The eponymous bounty hunter’s lawman father (R. Lee Ermey) is shot dead by infamous outlaw John Bly (Billy Drago) and his gang during a train escape, with Jr. (Bruce Campbell, he of the legendary chin) left to pick up the pieces. A group of robber barons hires Brisco to track down Bly and his gang, with nebbish lawyer Socrates Poole (Christian Clemenson, not a million miles away from David Hyde Pierce as Niles Crane) as their liaison. Also on Bly’s trail is rival bounty hunter Lord Bowler (Julius Carry), and along the way are colorful characters like Dixie Cousins (Kelly Rutherford), saloon singer and girlfriend of Bly’s second in command Big Smith (M.C. Gainey), and Professor Warwick (John Astin), a Doc Brown type who shares Brisco’s enthusiasm for “the coming thing”/promise of the future. But things quickly become complicated: Bly is interested in a strange artifact known only as the Orb that grants people inexplicable strength and psychic powers, among other niceties. Is THIS the ‘coming thing’? Perhaps, but Brisco will have to find out for himself. And there are plenty of other adventures in store along the way.
I feel like the above description does not quite do the series justice in getting across what it’s about or, more crucially, its tone. Like the other shows of the time that I mentioned, the adventures are primarily episodic; outside of the pilot, there are only five pure “plot” episodes about the Orb and Bly himself, even if many of the episodes deal with other members of his gang. That overarching plot is even resolved several episodes before the end of the season, the rest of which are more standalone plots. And those plots can vary wildly in terms of genre and incident: one story has Brisco acting as a lawyer for an old friend, another features a sheriff who acts like Elvis with no explanation whatsoever in the middle of a reasonably serious story about the cycle of revenge, and yet another has pirates. Yes, that kind. No, they’re not on the water. The only limits here are the writers’ imaginations (and of course the almighty budget), which are quite fertile indeed even if there are occasional dud episodes.
One might be tempted to assume via Campbell’s presence that the series is a parody of square-jawed adventurers in impossibly ridiculous situations. After all, he had just come off Army of Darkness, which rotated his Evil Dead protagonist Ash Williams into an outsized macho caricature whose skill in dispatching Deadites is matched only by his lack of foresight in, uh, everything else. It’s genuinely not. For one, Brisco is a far more traditional lead in terms of his competence. For two, the characters are comedic and eccentric, certainly, but their problems and emotions are taken seriously.  A good early touch is that while Brisco initially seems cold about his father’s death (reasoning that he had a long time to prepare for it given the man’s career), we see at the end of the pilot that he’s genuinely shaken and it still weighs on him for some time. And while he is a bit of a womanizing Indy/James Bond type, he’s not a bro-y horndog.
The others get nice shadings of depth at times as well. Bowler could have very easily come off as an Angry Black Man caricature and a lackey to Brisco once their rivalry turns into genuine partnership. And yet we get real insight to some crucial differences between them, like a terrific beat where Bowler proves to have invested his bounties wisely in terms of his beautiful mansion home, complete with an on-call butler. And their friendship always feels like one of equals, with a back-and-forth and mutual, eventually less grudging respect; there’s some very touching moments later on when we see how things have changed between them. While Socrates doesn’t get AS much development, he does prove to have more backbone than initially anticipated, as well as a moral fiber that serves him well. Dixie too has some nice beats of seeming less like a femme fatale and more like someone who’s very comfortable in her own skin, but also weary of Brisco’s inability to potentially settle down if she ever wanted that.
A lot of this is down to the cast, who is top to bottom terrific, with nary a bad performance in the regular, recurring, or various guest casts. Campbell often self-deprecates about his acting ability compared to some of his contemporaries, but I would say that his very blue-collar, get-the-job-done mentality is an unimaginable boon to his screen presence. There are many actors who could have played Brisco and well, but there’s a potential danger of either too much machismo overpowering the charm of the character or that aforementioned self-parody aspect being too much of a “ain’t this ridiculous, folks” twinkle in the eye. That does work for a character like Ash, who is sympathetic but ultimately a buffoon with one particular skillset, but Campbell wisely modulates and plays more of a straight man here. His comic timing never reaches too far for a laugh, letting them come out naturally rather than mugging for attention (good example is when he throws Dixie over his shoulder at one point and she demands to be put down: “Alright, you look bad in a wig and you were too easy to find!”) This lets him be a good balance to Carry in particular, who’s wonderfully exuberant and over-the-top by comparison, though he too modulates as necessary. Clemenson is the perfect likable nerd, not too action-hero but not too pathetic either, and Rutherford finds the right balance of Dixie being a canny career woman who nonetheless has the soul of a romantic at times. Warwick is also a lot of fun when he shows up, with Astin’s grandfatherly likability that can make even the groaniest of groaner dad jokes land on full display. The various guest villains make good impressions too, with Drago as a particular standout in terms of being genuinely scary for such an ultimately lighthearted show, and John Pyper-Ferguson manages to make a hell of an impression as Pete Hutter, a gunman with delusions of intellectual grandeur and an unhealthy fixation on his prized “piece” revolver. Think cowboy Team Rocket and you’re halfway there.
In terms of the actual production, it’s a handsome one even if the DVDs are showing their age (prayer circle for an eventual HD remaster). The physical effects are all great, and even the primitive CGI has a weird appeal, especially because it gets used for a couple of REALLY horrifying death scenes. It also hugely benefits from being shot on location in terms of the Wide Western Vistas and loving recreations of old-timey towns. The actual direction is very early 90s TV in terms of “get it in the can” professionalism most of the time, but it fits well with the breezy nature of things. Musically it’s fairly standard too outside of Randy Edelman’s excellent Copland-esque theme music (that later got reused for NBC’s Olympics coverage, which definitely fits).
I suppose in terms of actual FLAWS one can discuss, the main one that the racial dynamics are occasionally problematic. In terms of positives, we get a few black characters with Bowler as our main one, and they’re all fairly well portrayed, with nary a hint of racism beyond one “half-breed” comment implying that Bowler has Native American heritage (which is reflected in some of his dress and that Carry apparently had in real life). And while some of the Chinese characters have stereotypical mysticism attached, we are at least spared any broken English, and James Hong being the main recurring one means that the power of James Hong Being Awesome overpowers most of the negatives (he gets a good line about a Wise Saying where Brisco asks if it’s an ancient proverb: “No, I just made it up”). More glaring is zero Native American presence outside of that Bowler mention, and the Mexican characters are divided into groups of Bandits, Corrupt Military Assholes, and Heroic Revolutionaries. Not the most nuanced portrayal, is what I’m saying, even if you can make the argument of “well, EVERYONE is kind of silly, so that doesn’t stand out AS much as it would in a more ‘serious’ show.”
So why did Brisco ultimately fail with audiences? It’s hard to say. By all accounts, Fox was very supportive of the series and promoted the hell out of it. They aired every single episode too, unlike other, later shows that they cancelled early or mid-run (gestures at that one Family Guy joke). The time it was on could have played a role; 8 p.m. on Friday night is generally seen as the Death Slot. But then again, The X-Files, the show it was paired with during THEIR first season, found great success there before moving to primetime Sunday nights mid-run. And the audience Brisco DID obtain loved the hell out of it, especially when TNT later re-ran the series on Saturday mornings. Shit’s just hard to predict sometimes. But I do think it’s a shame. It’s a series that’s fun above all else, with good spirits and plenty of sensible-chuckle humor if rarely outright laugh-out-loud funny.
Maybe someday Brisco County, Jr. will ride again. Until then, we have this. And sometimes, that’s enough.

Hello. I'm in a crisis so here is a western story I was trying to write. This was the first thing I've tried writing and dropped. Anyways I hope you enjoy.
Western Frontier
I was naive when I began my journey in the desert. Not even having enough supply to last me to the nearest town. In my journey as I struggle to stay up on my horse, the desert heat shines with the wrath of god making me grow delirious. The water canister on my pouch only have a drop of water left and I begin to question if it’s worth it to drink now or continue to fight this thirst. I couldn't take it anymore and decided to reach for my water canister and take a sip, but at that moment, my horse became frightened, and shook me off, having me spill all my water in the dry desert. I got desperate, reaching out for the wet sand believing that eating it rehydrates me, but the sun’s devilish heat dries it quickly. I lay down on my back sun blaring into my chapped cut lips. My eyes getting dryer, I begin to close it as my body begins losing its will to carry on this journey
I thought it was the end for me but I awoke with the sun’s glare irritating my eyes. As my vision got steadier I noticed vultures fly around waiting for me to croak and a raven watching me. I slowly get up as my back aches from laying in the ground for so long. I begin looking around to assess my surroundings and I notice a man standing next to the hill, a strange man. He was staring towards nowhere with a nice fancy tall hat shining in the sun and a clean black suit with a red tie in the middle of the desert, not even wearing any boots, just  fancy shoes with a low top and a point.
The strangeman seems to notice that I’ve awakened. “Welcome back to the world of the living son. Looks like your horse isn't well accustomed to scorpions” the strange man says as he turns fully towards me. “You were nearly about to be another part of the land, lucky for you it wasn’t your time to go” the strange man says as he walks towards me. “You got grit kid to reject death like that, seems you’re really determined” he says as he inspects me. “Remember to keep that memory and never forget what you’ve done to get to your goals" the strange man begins to walk away.
I just sat there confused on what he meant “Do I know you?” I say as I get up. “Maybe, maybe not depends on the route you take for this story” The strange man says as he walks past the hill across from me. I watched as he walked past the horizon with his hands behind his back and hat glistening until he disappeared. I just stood there perplexed until the sun heat grew more that I was snapped out of it. I put my two thumbs in my mouth and whistled for my horse. I begin to hear his arrival as he runs over to me. I was taken aback a bit, surprised how my horse followed me even when I was unconscious. As I got back on the horse I looked around the empty waste land and noticed a town in the distance.
I tapped my boots on my horse to begin the journey to town. As we got closer to the town I noticed how not all the buildings were finished. I wonder if they even have a motel built. I decided to take a stop at the edge of town to tie up my horse. As I move into the town I see a bunch of hard working people moving plywood back and forth, a very nice united community. I see a man putting a sign up notifying people the clinic finished. I look to my left and a man runs out of a building.
He seems frightened looking around hastily. He wears a black suit with a red tie with a top hat. He noticed me staring at him. “Hello my sir, it seems you came in the nick of time.” The frightened man speaks to me as he run up to me clinching on my vest. I get a closer look at him and his suit is rugged and cover with dirt and his hat has clearly been sown back together. “There are these kind men in there that want to see me. You mind pointing them to the other direction” the man says as he runs away. I don’t know what that man did but it’s not my problem to watch his back. I look back at the building. Looks like a motel that’s being built and sees two angry men come out one of them is armed in the right pouch“You right there!” the unarmed one says as he points to me. “Hey greaser you seen where the guy who ran off went”
Even though I planned on just walking away hearing the man refer to me as a greaser pushed my buttons. I glance over to the two men. The one on the left is wearing a black hat, a red shirt with a leather vest over it while the armed one is wearing just a blue shirt I hold my hand next to my holster.
“Listen here gentlemens. You two better watch your goddamm tone! Before I cut your tongue off” I shout in anger to the two men. “Listen boy you have no idea who you are talking to” The one in red says as the blue one move towards his gun and at that moment it’s as if time slowed down.
A one on one duel, our life on the line, the first to draw walks away, It’s the greatest adrenaline rush out there. I instantly reach my gun, releasing it from my holster with a swiftness unsceen by the average mans’ eyes. I pull the trigger ending the mans life before he even notice me draw. His hit him right in the nose as his eyes gets launched out of it’s socket. The man in red is shocked unable to move from what he seen.
He is shaking more than a tumbleweed as I notice water running down. “I-I’ll get you for this” The man in red says as he begins running slipping as he retreats. I decide to head to the shop but when I try to find my wallet I realized it has been stolen. It must’ve been the man that came up to me for help. I walk down the direction I saw the man go stopping by the saloon to see if anyone seen him.
When I stopped by the saloon you I looked around at all the people drinking, a bunch of drifters like me moving around the west who decided to take a stop. A bunch of rugged men with noticeable scars, missing teeth, one of them even had a missing eye. In the corner of my eye I see the man that robbed me gambling my money away without a care in the world. I walked up to the man not wanting to make a seen, I decided to watch it play out. They were playing poker and the man is cheating yet somehow he still ends up losing.
I finally decided to step in from watching the embarrassment of cheating and still losing. I put my hand on his should and lean in to whisper in his ear. “I see your having a good time with my money”
The man the man seems in fazed as if he’s used to this situation already. “Oh my it seems you realized what I did” he says if a slight chuckle. That arrogant look on him is a real infuriating one. As if he been through this before that it’s just routine for him. I grab him by the collar lifting him up from the ground. Dragging him outside to the door of the bar. The man is relaxed in this situation looking more bored than anything. I throw him out of the door to the street floor. “So is this the part where you threaten my life until I give you a good offer” he says with a bored look as he slowly gets up from the ground wiping the dirt off his suit. I’m getting irritated from being near this man and I just point my gun at him. “Slow down there old sport. You should listen to my offer of forgiveness first” He says with a arrogant and cheery tone on him. I decide to just hear him out putting my gun away. “What’s the offer” I say very intrigued in the potential offer. “Well you see old sport there is a group of bandits camping out near the town. You seem strong and capable let’s say I give you the location and I walk away scot free” He says as he slowly walk up to me putting his arm around me as if we are some old friends. “Alright but you’ll be coming with me t

New Post has been published on https://eazycamping.net/go-wild-swimming-in-one-of-these-7-spots-in-texas/
Go ‘Wild Swimming’ in One of These 7 Spots in Texas
There’s nothing better than a swim in nature to help revitalize the senses. Whether you’re traveling through Texas or planning an epic camping trip to the Lone Star State, a quick dip in a natural swimming hole is always a great way to stay cool.
From the deserts of western Texas to the gorgeous landscapes of Texas Hill Country, there are crystal-clear waters to discover across the state, but is open-water swimming in Texas safe? The answer is yes if you know where to go.
We’ve compiled a list of options for “wild swimming” in places that are privately owned or located within a Texas State Park, so you can swim peacefully knowing the areas are well monitored and maintained.
Here are seven of the best natural swimming holes in Texas:
1. Blue Hole Regional Park, Wimberley, Texas
Swim:
Discover one of Texas’s most-loved natural swimming spots: The Blue Hole. From May to September, the Blue Hole Regional Park invites visitors to swim in the see-through blue-green waters, swing from rope swings, and experience true relaxation. With cypress trees looming all around, the water is spring-fed and stays at a refreshing temperature all summer long, making it an awesome place to cool off. There are biking and hiking trails to enjoy around the park too.
Stay:
The small ranch town of Wimberley boasts an excellent restaurant and bar scene, as well as a weekly Saturday market.
2. Inks Lake State Park, Burnet, Texas
Swim:
The Devil’s Waterhole is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. You’ll find it towards the northern end of the Inks Lake State Park in the Texas Hill Country. The surrounding landscape is famous for its fiery sunsets and picturesque beauty. Thanks to the steady flow of the Colorado River, the water in the deep pool at the Devil’s Waterhole is cool and clear and makes for an invigorating dip. It is surrounded by stunning rock formations and smooth, pink granite slabs, making it very popular for rock jumping.
Stay:
Explore the town of Burnet, which is famous for its swathes of bluebonnets in the spring.
3. Garner State Park, Uvalde, Texas
Swim:
With its deep canyons and imposing cliffs, a road trip to the gorgeous Garner State Park is something Texans have been raving about for years. Within Garner, the sparkling Frio River is lovely, especially on a hot day. There are lots of options for watersports, from kayaking to river tubing. Freshen up and spend evenings dancing the night away at the summer dances—you might even learn to do a Texas line dance!
Stay:
There are two cabins to book, or you can pitch a tent at several spots in the area.
4. Balmorhea State Park, Toyahvale, Texas
Image by Texas Parks & Wildlife
Swim:
Described by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a “cool oasis in the high desert,” the Balmorhea State Park in west Texas is home to San Solomon Springs, the largest outdoor pool in the world, measuring almost two acres. Bring your swimming goggles and enjoy gliding through the cool waters, which stay around 72-76 degrees Fahrenheit all year-round. The water is so clear, there are even opportunities to scuba dive and meet resident turtles and catfish. If you ever find yourself road-tripping across the Texas desert, this is a great place to stop.
Stay:
Treat yourself to a night in San Solomon Springs Court, a retro-inspired motel.
5. Lost Maples State Natural Area, Vanderpool, Texas
Swim:
Famed for its fall foliage, a visit to Lost Maples between late October to mid-November is well worth it to see the leaves of the mighty bigtooth maple trees change color. There are 10 miles of hiking trails to explore, including a trail to the fascinatingly shaped Monkey Rock.
You’ll come across a pleasant spot to swim beside the Sabinal River campgrounds, where you can wade in for a quick plunge.
Stay:
Lost Maples is a designated Dark Sky Park. Book into the Sabinal River Lodge or camp beneath the stars.
6. Guadalupe River, Ingram and Canyon Lake, Texas
Swim:
Just a short drive from both Austin and San Antonio, the Guadalupe River flows from Kerr County into the Texas Gulf Coast. Near the Kerr County town of Ingram, Schumacher Crossing is a little dam with several waterfalls flowing into a larger pond, which has become something of a secret swimming spot. Further along at Canyon Lake, the Horseshoe Loop is a fabulous place to enjoy an energizing day of river tubing.
Stay:
Discover New Braunfels, a small Texas town with German heritage and a fascinating downtown area to explore.
7. Krause Springs, Spicewood, Texas
Swim:
Krause Springs is a beautiful day out, just 30 miles west of Austin. With 115 acres of natural beauty to explore, there is a lagoon for swimming, with waterfalls and rope swings, as well as a man-made swimming pool. All 32 of the springs flow into both swimming areas and out into Lake Travis.
Don’t forget to explore the peaceful Butterfly Garden while you’re visiting the springs, with wind chimes and relaxing sounds leading you through a plethora of exotic plants.
Stay:
The site is privately owned by the Krause Family and offers camping with 24 RV sites with water and electricity.
Tips for ‘Wild Swimming’ in Texas
Always research where to swim before taking a dip. Throughout Texas, there can be issues with water quality, bacteria, and wildlife.
To be safe, swim in state parks or designeated state natural areas where the safety of the water is monitored.
Purchase a Texas State Park Pass to enjoy free entry to more than 80 parks for you and the family for a year. The parks also offer great places to camp with several campsites, cabins, and places to park an RV.
Some swimming holes require reservations to control numbers, so check in advance to avoid disappointment.
Bring a backpack with bug spray, water, water shoes, and SPF.
Have you gone swimming in a natural swimming hole (in Texas or elsewhere)? Tell us your favorite spot(s) in the comments below.

Wise River to Dillon (Day 6)
29 June 2022
Tumblr media
What an amazing early morning ride up the Big Hole River toward Wise River! It completely made up for the tough riding yesterday afternoon and the unappealing campsite last night.
I was surprised when I saw a pair of cyclists coming the other direction and even more surprised when were followed by more, some alone and some in groups, strung out over several miles of road. I figured it was a group ride of some sort (none were fully loaded) and sure enough, when I reached Wise River, the rest of their group was milling around, finishing coffee, lined up at the bathroom, or getting their bikes tuned (the idea of a dedicated mechanic is sort of appealing). It was an ACA group riding from Bozeman to Missoula, following some of my route (albeit backwards). I chatted for a bit before turning south up the Pioneer Byway, where my thoughts wandered to the notion of someday trying a supported ride!

The ride south on Pioneer Byway was pleasant, despite the long gradual climb. Pavement was good and traffic was sparse. This paved section is one of the more luxurious parts of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, but also a frequent segment of other rides in western Montana and I think sometimes a variation on the cross-country Trans Am route, which it intersects. The only problem on the Pioneer Byway was another flat just as I reached the top - fortunately there was a picnic table in the shade (which never happens when one has a flat tire). It turns out this puncture was yet another legacy of the tire disaster on Day 3, so despite the pleasant ride down the other side, I was getting really nervous about more surprises on the desolate roads that I had planned over the next couple of days.
Tumblr media
After fixing the flat I continued a couple of miles to Elkhorn Hot Springs, where I got a good cheeseburger (despite clear staffing issues and signs of disrepair). The only other folks in the restaurant were a European couple riding the GDMBR and using the Wi-Fi to talk to friends at home. The Pioneer Byway ends with a left turn onto MT 278, where one is briefly on both the eastbound Trans Am (Astoria OR to Yorktown VA) and the southbound GDMBR (Banff AB to Antelope Wells NM). The GDMBR turns off in a few miles toward Bannock (I will rejoin it in a couple of days west of Yellowstone). But I’ve chosen to stick to pavement and the Trans Am Route to Dillon (and actually for the next two days). The problem with getting to Dillon, where I had made a motel reservation, was that there’s a big hill (Badger Pass) before the final downhill into the town.
Tumblr media
The condition of my tires was really weighing on me. I had planned on taking Blacktail Road from Dillon into the area Rock Lakes area and rejoining the GDMBR, but I was getting nervous. That’s a lot of gravel and some long empty roads. I called a local bike guy (thanks for talking to me, Joe B.) and based on his advice, decided to stick to pavement (and less remote roads) for awhile. One neat aspect of taking the Trans Am route is that I get to fill in a little of the gap that I left on my 2019 cross-country ride (albeit in the other direction).
