i actually don't think that steve is overly that insecure, especially to do with his appearance-- most of the insecurities that pop up with him are to do with his abandonment issues :( but that does not mean there aren’t little moments, yknow?

sometimes it’s a comment, sometimes it only takes an old photograph, especially something something from his earlier years when it was just sport after sport after sport— and look, he likes that he's not as lean as he used to be but then, well sometimes old jeans just don’t fit right and his tummy pushes over the waistband and steve doesn’t hate it, he swears he doesn’t, he just spends a couple extra minutes in the mirror.

he thinks you won’t notice— thinks there wouldn’t be any way you would be able to tell and honestly, he thinks he gets away with it- his usual charm gets all the laughs and you seem to be more giving with your kisses tonight, on his neck and cheeks whenever you can, but he doesn’t make the connection at all. but then back at his, when the kisses get more heated and you’re sprawled in his lap, both of you half undressed, steve starts to notice the extra attention. the lingering lovebites on the inner of his thighs, the nuzzling along his happy trail and tummy — these these motions that draw attention to these parts, these fickle little moments of insecurity, all while you douse him in pleasure.

while i was in the midst of a bad chronic pain flare over christmas i was unbelievably bored and without the mental energy to do my usual things like reading/writing/socialising, so i thought hey, wouldn’t it be cool to make a video of all the “standing next to me” milex moments in chronological order. turns out this was in fact the worst idea ever; i didnt even get through half the tour before the video became FIFTEEN MINUTES LONG and it’s been slowing up my phone storage space ever since 😭 i kind of want to finish it, but on the other hand - it’ll probably wind up at thirty minutes by the time i’ve included all the shows, and who’s going to watch half an hour of them not quite snogging each other’s faces off (me. i’ll watch it)

In a way it’s very sad AND endearing that Sung Hyunjae is so hung up on Han Yoojin. In part because his existence is so worn out that he doesn’t derive enjoyment from normal things, and also because just genuinely likes hanging out with Han Yoojin. Pre-regression and post-regression Sung Hyunjae has met with Han Yoojin and very quickly decided he would start bothering him nonstop.

He has the same kind of obsession with Song Taewon but Song Taewon is entirely too strait-laced to indulge Sung Hyunjae in the seemingly mundane or even petty things. And it’s because Han Yoojin WILL indulge in those aspects that makes Sung Hyunjae’s dynamic with him compelling.

With Song Taewon there isn’t any risk, they’re both accomplished S-rank hunters; Song Taewon’s skills specialize in neutralizing aggressive S-ranks even. He has the durability to match and can engage in violent bouts with Sung Hyunjae which, as a natural born S-rank, Sung Hyunjae rightfully enjoys. He even causes trouble for Song Taewon on purpose many times, much to Song’s aggrievement. But it’s only one type of enjoyment.

Han Yoojin has none of that yet he openly toys with Sung Hyunjae just as much as the latter does to him. It’s what draws Sung Hyunjae to Han Yoojin. No doubt there has never been a hunter, much less an F-rank hunter, that has ever fiddled with him this much. It borderlines disrespectful at times, likely because Han Yoojin can’t hold back his momentary jealousy and other internalized issues, but Sung Hyunjae allows it. Ultimately him allowing an inferior hunter to play with him like this is also a specific kind of novelty which he derives enjoyment from.

And so it’s this tightrope-like dynamic that is compelling in its own right, but also so very interesting to watch unfold. There are boundaries, but those boundaries are often blurred. The one or other not realizing they were even there until it’s been crossed, and the inevitable tension that ensues.

From time to time Han Yoojin’s teasings will go too far and Sung Hyunjae will show his displeasure. It’s not overt in form but he makes it evident to the point Han Yoojin can grasp its extent. Enough that Han Yoojin knows he’s made a misstep but unable to pull back. Sung Hyunjae can’t express those frustrations physically though because Han Yoojin wouldn’t be able to withstand it. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t show it on occasion and Han Yoojin has to placate him in naturally submissive ways. S-rank hunters are likened to predators throughout the novel, natural born S-ranks even more so. As an F-rank Han Yoojin can’t afford to push back and has to acquiesce to his mood, assuage his inflated ego. Sung Hyunjae also derives enjoyment from his rank-appropriate mannerisms as much as his rank-violating ones.

On the other end Han Yoojin is very protective of his younger brother and won’t hesitate to rip apart Sung Hyunjae if he genuinely threatens him. Sung Hyunjae knows it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do anything to him physically but there is a certain unpredictable element to Han Yoojin, one surprise after another, that likely has him the slightest bit on edge. That maybe Han Yoojin would be able to sink his fangs into him if he really tried. Sung Hyunjae also derives enjoyment from that possibility as well, indulging into the sadistic tendencies he occasionally acts upon.

However he doesn’t want Yoojin to hate him. He evens mentions it to Song Taewon that he wishes he could do everything he wants to do to Han Yoojin, the good and the bad, but there is only a single one of him and so he can’t risk having Han Yoojin hate him. But he does express those desires briefly, to which Song Taewon ends up being the unfortunate recipient of in transmigrated ways. Sung Hyunjae also enjoys Song Taewon’s reactions and hypocritical nature as an answer to his own Song-Taewon-curated type of teasing.

So it’s both sad that Sung Hyunjae is forced to feel so spent, the countless years wrapped around him subconsciously much like the chains he wields, but also endearing: he can still feel those moments of enjoyment, they just need to be divvied out in obscure ways. And that only adds to what makes his relationships and interactions with the various characters, specifically Han Yoojin, so interesting.

I first encountered it in this truly beautiful video essay examining the layers of literary meaning within Bridgens and Peglar's in-show relationship (as well as within the Peglar Papers in general) and it just struck me!

We can't excuse the 'conquering', erase away the evils of colonialism, or pretend that it's not an intrinsic part of both the factual and fictional narrative surrounding the Franklin Expedition.

But that doesn't mean we can't also reflect on the human cost of it all - the animal femurs, as it were - and find beauty and intrigue and humanity in that same narrative and the people caught up within it.

the squires for knights are the round table's adopted children. oh, sorry, was that kid the son of such and such??? he's leon's boy now. they all have youngest sibling syndrome so sorry i don't make the rules and yes they do treat merlin like he's a mob wife.

these squires would get up to so much shit omfg. if you're the squire to gwaine, have fun upsetting your noble father (because most squires come from the nobility and since arthur took down that rule when he became, then there became this influx of squires who were from the common people) and learning that doing illegal shit is the best thing and you've only tasted a sliver of what gwaine has been doing since he was 13 but you LOVE IT---

squires of sir leon are trained into how to become the mom friend. it's not much, but it's hard work. sometimes the little squires pity their knight because he is not paid enough for for the antics his other knights and king get into ("poetry??? seriously, is that what they told him???" "idk that's roland said" "maybe we should gift him some more moisturizer?"). yes they do treat sir leon with the respect they would give an older cousin.

sir elyan is very new to all this...squire business but he's not one to let his little men (little brothers tbh) be caught slacking. he has them run drills everyday and they complain about it all the time ,but then you'll find them in an empty room perfecting their forms, and making sure it's perfect because sir elyan deserves the best. and he called nathan's form "superb" but nathan's a bitch and you just think that if you get this form right---

elyan teaches his squires moves that were taught to him by tristan and isolde because they totally worked together while elyan was away and he respects them so much and misses them and wonders if they ever got the chance to settle down and breath like they had dreamed

sir percival is second on the list of knights who teaches his squires the more traditional way (first is leon obvi) but that does not mean he let's them fall behind with dirty tricks. listen, this man was friends with lancelot (honorable, noble, dreamed of being a knight since he was prob 15) so he knows the intricacies of knighthood; however, he is also besties with gwaine and elyan both of whom are a chaotic combination if put in the same room. the squires are granted the perfect balance of swishy swordplay and body slamming a bitch. sleeves??? don't know her. the squires beg percival for them to cover their arms and he is offended.

sir lancelot, the epitome of honor and loyalty, is a force to work with. the squires think that he'll be the one whose teaching will lead them far off adventures and gain cool ass scares. lancelot is actually the old coot who grants wisdom like an old man who's lived two lifetimes. his training is unusual but somehow it works. the chores he assigns aren't demeaning, nor are they used as punishment. you are lancelot's squire for a week and you immediately understand that this man is a man who has his heart on his sleeve and you watch as he gazes at the king, the queen, and the manservant. his eyes always fond and full of...something. you are too young to pick up on a deep and unconditional emotion like that. not yet.

My personal weakness are characters who are Objectively Not Good People by any stretch of imagination -- maybe they are selfish or difficult or jealous or get others in their paths hurt -- and yet at the same time, alongside all those flaws, they have within them a capacity for immense kindness and it surfaces again and again in acts big and small.
