Gideon the Ninth Appendices (continued)
Cohort Intelligence Files
Oh, these are written by Judith!
Wow, she and Marta joined the Cohort when they were literal children - eleven and ten, respectively. I guess it's somewhat common to burden little kids with responsibilities early amongst the Nine Houses?
On Naberius Tern:
He also has an extremely good opinion of himself and his swordplay, an opinion that Lt. Dyas notes occasionally aligns with reality.
Oh I love the subtle shade here. I'm also noting that Coronabeth's charisma seems to dazzle even Judith Deuteros as she is writing this, since she doesn't know about her or Ianthe's necromantic prowess - yes they were homeschooled, but knowing that necromancers are usually frail, wouldn't you wonder whether Ianthe is more necromantically apt, quietly, from her sister's shadow?
I guess not.
On Isaac Tettares:
the eldest of eight. [...] Father killed by terrorists out on [REDACTED] nineteen years ago: all of his children have been posthumous and the title held in stewardship.
Interesting! Also the bit about how kids can be born either of XX-carrier or vat-womb. Reproduction sure has advanced a great deal (as has the disconnection of sex from gender, apparently - which I've noticed before, but is obvious enough here to comment on it!)
Anyway, as we learned in Harrow the Ninth, the father does not have to be physically present for a child to get their genetic material. All you need is said genetic material. If you're in an important position in your House, presumably it's custom to save an amount of genetic material so you can continue to have heirs in the event of your death.
It seems customary for the Fourth to go to school at the Fifth, which explains the close relationship between Isaac and Jeannemary, and Abigail and Magnus.
On Protesilaus:
He's married??? He has children???? Oh my goodness, that makes his unfortunate demise at Cytherea's hands so much more tragic.
... Okay, I think that's all I really have to say on that!
A little explanation of naming systems
I did already get the idea, literally from the Dramatis Personae in Gideon the Ninth, that names refer to your House. Interesting to me is that they work differently to current surnames: people have different last names to their parents, and their last names are at least somewhat unique to them. Even siblings rarely share a name, making Coronabeth and Ianthe exceptions to the rule.
Interesting!!
Pelleamena and Priamhark: It shouldn't surprise me that these two are named for people in the Iliad. I kind of figured, with Priamhark, but it's a little less obvious with Pelleamena.
I adore the little pronounciation guides, tbh.
Crux, to rhyme with "sucks": Yeah sounds about right
Marta Dyas: DIE-ass. I'm sorry, I couldn't come up with anything better.
You know, I'm glad I decided to dig into these in a bit more detail, because Tamsyn's notes on these are hilarious.
On Ianthe and Coronabeth:
In the original, Ianthe and Corona were "Cainabeth and Abella", a feat of naming so unsubtle that I might as well have just gone with "Goodtwin" and "Badtwin". And it's not even accurate! It should be Badtwin, and Lessbadtwin.
I'm reminded of Coronabeth going "She could have taken me!!!" after Ianthe became Lyctor. Oh, she sure could have! Why do you sound jealous, Coronabeth?
On Jeannemary and Isaac:
Isaac here foreshadows Gideon's death by doing the "bravest and stupidest" thing, i.e. getting his abdomen made into a huge Connect-4 board. I might as well have called Jeannemary and Isaac "Don'tgetattached" and "Deadsoon".
Okay, rude. I mean, I didn't end up reading into the naming while reading Gideon for the first time, though maybe I should have. Maybe I wouldn't have gotten so attached (and upset) when they were both deadsoon.
On Palamedes:
Pal-AM-a-dees. At first I had a coarse comparison here, but then I removed it.
Palamadeez nuts, lol. So rude, Tamsyn.
Oh wow, more foreshadowing in the names of Dulcinea and Protesilaus. Wow. Okay remind me to dissect any new names that come up in Nona the Ninth (whenever I get to actually reading that).
... Okay, we're done with the appendices of Gideon the Ninth!!
Now soon to follow: Appendices of Harrow the Ninth, including As Yet Unsent, then I will read The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex, and then, then finally, we will start on our reread of Gideon and Harrow.
I can't wait!

Hi! I just wanna say i really love starstruck (although admittedly, before i read anything about her i thought that she was an AU kirby that lost her memories and everyone somehow forgot about after somehow turning into a waddle dee... honestly that might be a cool story to write i gotta remember that) and you kinda inspired my to pick up my Moonja oc again and use them a bit more! So thanks for that! :3
that would have been a fun theory as well tbh!! in the very first artwork of her i posted (besides my icon) i actually commented on how i thought people might assume she was kirby in a bow because of her similar colour! i've also joked before that she looks sort of like a kirby/bandee fusion? 😂
those were all totally unintentional though! just superficial similarities caused by the fact that i have an existing pink + stars theme. kirby and i just have shared tastes 🥰
i'm glad to hear you're inspired to pick up your own oc again!! i hope you have a lot of fun!

Day 4: Ten Steps Forward, Two Steps Back
I know, I know, it's a day late :P I was feeling really bad today and tbh just wanted to write something, so here you go.
Tagging: @tumhari-bhairavi and @morally-gayy because you both loved Durga x Saranika ;)
also @desi-lgbt-fest since ig it counts as a submission.
Might delete later but as of now here you go:
Tumblr media
Durga stood stonily in front of the officer with disgust smeared across his face.
“Fucking unnatural.” He shook his head, curling his lip at her. “Who do you think you are, disrespecting India like this? Bringing shame to the army.”
It’s all for Saranika. She repeated the mantra that had brought her this far, over and over to herself. We are not immoral.
“Anyway-” the officer cleared his throat, eyeing her with utter revulsion. She could see him edging away from her, as if being gay was a disease that he could catch. “-Officer Sharma, you are honourably discharged from the Indian Army as of today.”
Durga let out a little shuddering breath. Honourably discharged.
“Honourably?” she questioned, the ghost of a sure smile lingering across her lips. “What, was my father’s influence so strong that you couldn’t even bear to discharge his daughter dishonourably?”
The officer sat down behind his desk, waving his hand at her in dismissal. The gesture stung more than she would like to admit. “Collect your things and leave. Your taxi arrives in half an hour.”
Durga stepped out of the office without saluting, head held high and with a smile on her face.
She had been discharged in the name of love, because of a system that continued to deny her identity.
Her lifelong dream… gone, and yet…
She couldn’t have been happier.
Walking down the corridor in her perfectly shining boots, keenly aware that this would be one of the last times she felt this way, wearing the uniform of the Indian Army, she called her beloved fiancée.
“Saranika?” her heartbeat quickened as the smile of a young girl deep in love twinkled in her eyes. “Ay, meri jaan. Honourable discharge. You?”
“Honourable discharge as well, Dee.” Saranika sniffed from the other end, clearly close to tears. “Papa ji’s influence is still strong, I see.”
-
As Durga prepared to step into the taxi, a young soldier ran up to her, her hair a mess and holding her cap in her hands. “Sindh-ji! Sindh-ji!”
Her voice was frantic, and although Durga was tired, something told her to listen to the woman. “Yes? Was there something you needed?”
“Just one minute, please.” The woman looked around furtively, beckoning Durga to a corner. “You got discharged because… you’re a lesbian, right? Do they do that to all of us?”
Us?
The woman’s eyes were wide and frightened, and Durga crumpled looking at her, just another girl that had to make the choice between her country and her identity.
“Yes.”
Her voice was barely a murmur.
“Please don’t abandon us.” The girl begged. “We need change here. I don’t want to leave… but I want to love someone, someday. Please, Sharma-ji.”
Her voice trembled and shook as she spoke, twisting the fabric of her cap between her fingers. Durga’s eyes were filled with tears, but she placed a comforting hand on the younger woman’s soldier. “Of course I will.”
Durga’s voice was soft, but resolute.
“I’ll fight for as long as I need to.”
-
Saranika had never seen Durga so frustrated. Always calm and collected, she was used to finding a logical solution to each and every one of her problems.
“Fuck-” Durga threw a cushion across the room, turning away to bury her head in her hands. Saranika wrapped her arms around her fiancée, wishing to ease her pain, even a little. “There are so many people just like us, baby.” Saranika sucked in a breath, seeing her red-rimmed eyes.
“It’s fine.” Saranika reassured her. “We’ll find a way to help them.”
In the next few months, they were full of plans. Durga’s and her father’s influences in the army was high, and there were many willing to listen to them. Around the world, support for their campaign rose higher and higher, the hashtag #LesbianArmy trending worldwide.
We are willing to fight!
Campaigns, reports, articles, websites, documentaries – the list was endless. Durga and Saranika held their faith. They were fighting for something they believed in, fighting for something they lived by.
It was a hard battle. They received as much hate as they did support. Daily, slurs were sent anonymously, hate comments left on websites.
It was a hard battle, yes – but they had each other, and so they persevered.
Three years later, the official bill was passed allowing those of any sexual orientation to join proudly in the Indian Army, and serve their country in the way they had always wanted to. Among those, Durga and Saranika stood proudly, hands intertwined: showing the world who they were, loving each other as much as they loved their nation.
That day, someone spat at them. They received a fair amount of disgusted looks and cruel sneers.
Despite that, they carried on.
Ten steps forward, and two steps back… is still eight steps forward.
Tumblr media
Again idk anything about the army, literally everyone is referred to as officer so feel free to imagine appropriate ranks, etc etc. hope you enjoy regardless!

Do you have any interesting headcanons about the characters' families (the eds and the other kids)? I sometimes see more similar, recurring opinions, so I'm curious to hear any unusual or left field ideas.
I think I pretty much share the fandom headcanons, but honestly I'm not sure :0
I def think all three Eds have some form of abusive parents. Ed's parents are neglectful of Ed, and often listen to Sarah over him. Sarah gets a really nice room while Ed has the basement. When he doesn't do well in school they don't even try to work something out with him, they just send him to his Aunt. That coupled with my headcanon that Ed is Autistic, I just don't view his parents in a good light. They don't seem to want to help Ed through his learning disability, instead they seem to have already accepted failure.
More under the cut, for length
Double Dee's parent are just never there, as we've seen, only communicating with their son through sticky notes. They still have such high expectations of him with little interaction.
Now with Eddy, I get the feeling that his parents are the reason his bro ran away. They might seem fine on the surface, but I think there's a hidden layer of manipulative behavior going on here that could be very damaging. His own father's biggest concern is that he becomes a figure skater. HIS GREATEST CONCERN is over what his own son wants to do with his life like it's not his god damn job to support his kids in whatever they want to do.
Not only that but let's look at eddy's bro, shall we? We don't see any trace of him in the house besides his room. There's even a scene, I think in BPS but I could be wrong, where we pass a line of family portraits in Eddy's house and we see silhouettes of Eddy, his mom and dad... but no bro. His brother's room is also sealed off via wall paper from the rest of the house?? Like they were trying to hide it. His room is sealed off with bricks. Bricks over the window, which yea could be his bro being edgy, but the heating vent? I feel like his parents were the ones responsible for the bricks, to keep his bro from getting out of his own room. Especially after they find the heat vent bricks after pointing out that the vent could lead to an escape. Something not quite right is up with Eddy's parents, and I hope to be able to explore that in my fanfic tbh.
As for the other kids, I have less opinions on.
I saw a headcanon about Kevin's folks that they're split, and Kevin lives with his dad, I liked that one.
I feel like Rolf's family is very matriarchal, with how much he talks about his nana/ great nana etc.
Jimmy's family seems like the chillest of the bunch if they're actively supporting their son playing dress up and buying stuffed animals. In my version of their adult selves where Jimmy is NB, they actively support their kid with all their heart. Probably the best parents in the whole cul-de-sac.
Jonny's folks are probably hippies, life-loving folk who are just along for life's ride. They aren't bad to their son, but some people might see their carefree ways as such.
Let's be honest, the Kanker's mom is probably a hooker which is where the Kankers themselves learned that kind of behavior. Probably how the Kankers were born too lol. (for the record I don't have a negative opinion of sex workers. Do what ya gotta do n all that, queens and kings!)
Anyways this got so much longer than I anticipated, I hope I answered your question lmao 🙈

song diaries: damon albarn edition
i thought i'd wait until the end of this week to do this weekly library entry for the music i've been checking out, but you know what? fuck it let's to it today, i've just got too much to say.
so this week i've been on a damon albarn discography expedition. listening to the ballad of darren over and over for like a month and consuming hours worth of concert and interview content has clearly broken something in my brain and this old geezer's music is my new hyperfixation. not complaining though cause there's just SO MUCH. there's like five lifetime's worth of music he's put out in 40 years give or take, and i can't think of one genre he hasn't dipped his toes into. also he's worked with so many SO MANY amazing musicians and artists!!!!! which is always so cool so many new people to discover and get obsessed with <3
now blur and gorillaz on their own are pretty much lifetime achievements but albarn also has such rich body of work outside them as well. i've kinda been familiar with those two for years, my recent forage has mainly been into his non-blur, non-gorillaz music.
here are some highlights i need y'all to be obsessed with just as much as i am:
The Moon Exalted (from the opera Dr Dee, 2011)
did u know damon albarn is an composer of operas as well?! i had no idea! a couple days back i heard him mention working on orchestrating one of goethe's unfinished librettos and i, of course had a very Normal reaction to that. (my obsession with classical music might be sleeping but never dead) so i went checking and learnt he already has 3 opera compositions under his belt. woah.
anyway this piece/song is from the 2011 production dr. dee: based on the life story of some elizabethan magic dude. there's a bunch of traditional elizabethan folk instruments- viola de gamba, lute, shawm, recorder etc etc, the wonderful kora (malian instrument, a blend of lute and harp), the harmonium (literally never saw harmonium being used in any music from the west lol im bengali so i get terribly excited abt this) and the iconic, the legendary tony fucking allen featured on this. the vibes are more folksy, earthy than renaissance-lite which i find pretty cool.
the moon exalted is such a lovely, lovely song though. one of the prettiest things albarn's ever written probably. the kora interlude makes me sob like a baby every single time.
check out this live from his solo concert at the globe theatre:
youtube
Go Back (feature on Tony Allen's album Film of Life)
legendary drummer tony allen (i've been listening to afrobeat a bit as well, that's for another day) and albarn has had a long working relationship and friendship. they've worked together on gorillaz, they were in two supergroups together, they worked extensively to champion western african music.
this track is a personal favourite already. wonderful afrobeat elements and tony's distinctive style coupled with some solid jazz keyboard-ing from albarn.
this performance tribute to tony allen makes my heart especially ache (he sadly passed away in 2020). albarn's talked a lot about how much allen meant to him, as a collaborator, mentor and friend, and it's all quite emotional.
youtube
This Is A Low (live from Shakespeare's Globe)
youtube
listen listen listen i said no blur- but. you gotta listen to this version of this is a low (from Parklife, 1994). he plays quite a bit of blur on the piano for his solo shows but they are kinda a hit or miss tbh. but this one works. for this 2021 solo concert albarn introduced a discordant piano solo in place of graham coxon's rather iconic guitar solo. and omfg it came outta nowhere and hit me straight in the face i love it so much
(don't tell anyone but ipreferthepianosolo)
The Nearer The Fountain More Pure The Stream Flows (from The Nearer The Fountain More Pure The Stream Flows, 2021)
damon albarn has two Solo ™ albums and the second, and lastest, one of these is the nearer the fountain more pure the stream flows released in 2021. initially starting out some sort of an orchestral piece inspired by the changing scenery outside the window of his home in albarn, it eventually ended up becoming this set of very melancholic and intimate set of songs. about so many things: loneliness and our changing relationship with nature and anxiety over life etc etc. post-pandemic feels basically.
it's a deeply emotional listening experience, with sweeping strings at places and gentle piano in others. quite a good showcase of albarn's pianowork imho (u see a pattern here right?). my fav out of them is the title track. the name comes from a john clare poem and it's absolutely stunning.
Mr. Tembo and The Selfish Giant (from Everyday Robots, 2014)
albarn's first solo record, everyday robots of 2014, is up there are one of his best works in my books. it's a set of autobiographical songs inspired by various moments in his life, with elements of triphop, folk and electronica and general themes of isolation and nature/technology etc: which are such quintessentially damon albarn, y'know?
mr. tembo is a adorable lil folksy song about this orphaned baby element he met in tanzania. aaaaannnnd, it features a gospel choir because mr. tembo grew up take care of by forest rangers who listened to a lot of gospel radio. cute.
speaking of the selfish giant........oooffff. big ooooffff. such a gut punching song, goodness. like when i heard the line "it's hard to be a lover when the tv's on" it knocked me out of service for a while.
Waterloo Sunset (The Kinks cover with Ray Charles, somewhere in the late 90s)
youtube
this one's quite a legendary performance. in the early blur days, damon albarn was often talked of as like a successor to sir ray davies, he of the kinks fame and witty observational character studies of english life.
this performance of them duetting the iconic the kinks song waterloo sunset was a passing of the baton moment of sorts. and when davies breaks into parklife in the end- all the feels, man, all the feels.
Mali Music (2002 album)
written in collaboration with afel bocoum, toumani diabaté & friends featuring ko kan ko sata, this album explores- you guessed it- music from mali. now i know next to nothing about mali or west african music really so i'm gonna be using this album as a reference point to learn and research more.
Poison Tree (from the 2018 The Good The Bad And The Queen album, Merrie Land)
the good the bad and the queen is 100% for sure one of the most underrated supergroups ever. i mean paul simonon (the clash), simon tong (the verve), tony allen and albarn- can you imagine the sheer level of awesomeness?!
they have two albums, and it's unlikely they'll ever have another. poison tree from their second album is perhaps my fav tgtb&tq song. merrie land was written about and as a reaction to brexit, and there's feelings of farewell and isolation and desolation prominent throughout. but poison tree also reminds me strongly of blur songs like battery in your leg and sweet song and no distance left to run. so yeah, emo hours.
(*for those uninitiated in blur lore the first two songs albarn wrote for/about graham coxon when he left the band in 2003, and the latter was written about his breakup with justine frischmann in 1998)
On Melancholy Hill (live from Matera, 2019)
youtube
blur got a cheat entry, so to balance things out, gorillaz gets one as well. on melancholy hill is a heartbreakingly tender song as it is but solo piano version makes it heartbreaking-lier and tender-er *sniffles*

I had a thought about Risk E. Rat’s. I think I saw someone on tumblr theorise recently that Leo’s appearance probably isn’t for a Mac flashback for reasons I don’t remember. I was just thinking about how Mac said in Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang that he wants something to pass down to his kids. what if that was foreshadowing, and he’s going to discover that he already had a kid years ago when he was still banging chicks? argument against: 1. would be a rehash of Charlie Wants an Abortion, 2. if they want to do gang/fatherhood stories they’ve already got Brian Jr and have barely tapped that well, and 3. not sure that Rob + Kaitlin would want to put their kid into a recurring role and expose their kid to the industry? argument for: maybe it would be interesting to see the difference between dad Mac vs dad Dennis. Mac’s kid would be older and that could be an interesting dynamic. what if because he hasn’t been around, his kid pushes Mac away, just like his parents did to him? or maybe Mac would be Lutheresquely distant, just like he was with Uncle Donald. also I can totally see Mac and Dennis arguing because Mac adds “as a father…” to his identity spiel and Dennis knows he knows more about fatherhood than Mac.
just throwing this out to sunnyblr idk
Hmmm interesting. Tbh I do think at this point he’s just ‘kid Mac fights at the arcade’ because that’s pretty funny in terms of the casting-situation. But you bring up some interesting points/plots.
Frank is a dad, duh; Dennis has a kid; Charlie had a kid scare/plot; Dee gave birth to a kid; Mac is the only member of the gang without some kind of kid plot or connection, and the one who seems most inclined to actually want a family (and the biggest anti-condom of them all)
IF he were Mac’s kid, it would be a weird timing issue as well, since Leo is only 12-ish, he was born circa-S8. Axel was who Kaitlin was pregnant with in S6, and I believe that Halloween party was the last time we saw/heard about Mac having sex with a woman. Since then… gay Mac rules.
SO if Leo’s character was his kid they’d either have to age him up a little (kinda doubt) or they’d backtrack and say he was still sleeping with women in Season 7/8, which I’m not a major fan of, or he’s Margaret McPoyles kid LMAO.
I think the biggest indicator to helping us figure this out is why is it Leo? Did they need someone who look familial, or did he just want to try acting? I am thinking it might just be the latter post-Wrexham filming and Rob sharing that he’s been showing some episodes to the kids.
I think it’ll be an unrelated character, but probs have some fun hints/meta related to the casting. And you know who looks just as much like Leo as Rob does? Kaitlin. Damn that child is a little McElhenney/Olson clone! And we know his character interacts with Frank. It would be pretty cute/funny if Frank looked at him and was like ‘why the shit do you look just like my daughter as a kid?’
Past that, if he isn’t part of a flashback/playing young Mac, I don’t really want him to be related to the Gang, tbh. I think Mac ‘wants’ to be a dad, but realistically he would need to be a co-parent to Brian Jr. because he’d absolutely just get along with his kid like a child, fights and contributing to chaos and throwing tantrums and all until they just burn off and he’s ‘over’ being a dad and moves on. Mac is a massive child, and I love that about him, and I think that’s the plot we’ll get, seeing him be a kid next to a kid and coming across as the bigger child

Saw someone doing this so wanted to join in
TV Questionnaire
List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly
1. Inside No. 9
2. BBC Ghosts
3. The League of Gentlemen
4. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
5. Yonderland
1. Who is your favourite character in 2?
Humphrey Bone, my beloved ♥️
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Oh god, there are quite a few not very likeable characters in that show in a way. Might be a bit controversial to say, but I'm going to say Simon from Simon Says.
3. What's your favourite episode of 4?
There are far too many to name just one... That said, the first one that came to my mind was Charlie Work, so going with that.
4. What is your favourite season of 5?
Series 2
5. What's your favourite relationship in 3?
Pauline and Mickey ❤️
6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?
Humphrey's body and Fanny
7. How long have you watched 1?
Not super long actually, was just over a year ago that I finally sat down and watched it.
8. How did you become interested in 3?
After watching Inside No. 9 and putting together that Reece and Steve are the same guys from League (which has been on my radar to watch for a few years at that point), I finally sat down to watch it.
9. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Charlie Day
10. Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?
Damn, coming at me with the big question here... have to say it's 1 tho.
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3?
1, as there's more episodes.
12. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Of all 5 shows, it had to be this one... I don't want to be any of them tbh. But if I had to pick, I'd weirdly say Dee.
13. How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?
😢😢😢 nooo.... I don't want to kill Ho-Tan. I'd have to do it in her sleep in a very pain-free way so she doesn't suffer or know it was me.
14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Oh, god. I mean... yeah, in a weird way. Actually, I'm thinking more about it. I'd love that. The Sunny gang would fit in so easily and well with everyone else in Royston Vasey.
15. Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
For some strange reason, the first 2 characters to come to my mind are Chas from The Last Weekend and Stu from Sardines.
16. Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?
Oh, I hate this... Putting them both against each other like this. This is so unfair 💔 I could never pick between these 2 genius groups of people!
..5

Firstly I think you 100% are an Eddie. That suits you so well! Also like...okay so firstly im a cis woman and my knowledge of these things is limited and I hope by saying this I dont offended you. But like Eddie is also quite gender neutral. Like Alex cound be Alexander or Alexandra Eddie could be Edward or Edwina so I would imagine it could save you from any potential transphobic old farts who could misgender you, like they can't exactly be all Oh Derek is a BOYS name or something because Eddie is just Eddie you could be male or female. I mean you should be able to be whatever you want without some douche doing that anyway...but like if they did you're protected by the ambiguity of Eddie. I hope that makes sense? Again I mean no offense, I genuinely think that's a cool touch.
Aw thank you!
No offense taken at all, no worries
I mean, I will be putting Edward on paperwork - it's a good solid, no-mistakes name, and I like having my paternal-great-great-grandfather's name and my maternal-grandfather's surname, too, tbh, cs I'm a family history nerd, and it's nice to feel connected to them all in a way, cs I haven't always, tho that might be a bit odd to say
But I like Eddie best, too, y'know - it's more masculine side of gender neutral, you're right, I do sort of like the uhhhh the that about it - I wouldn't go for a stereotypical name as like Derek you say, cs it wouldn't fit me, either - I like having a name that's the masculine side of gender neutral, when I myself am the gender neutral side of masculine haha
And it is good from a safety point of view, like you say, that it's not um it could be short for something else, if someone was choosing to be a prick about things, I could pretend so
And, tbh, I like having a name that is masculine, it feels like it fits - because Dee is so,, not masculine, I feel like being called that would um would cause people to look at me more as a woman, y'know - tho, my dad is called D by his old mates, and that's short for Darren, which is a thought I've kept to keep me, when I was down about people always misgendering me - which is mostly the lack of T, but definitely exacerbated by the more feminine-sounding name, if you see?
I've lost my train of thought, thinking instead about how my grandfather was Edward/Ed, and his son was Edward/Sonny/Ted, and now I'll be Edward/Eddie - it's nice, it draws a line I've never had - I've always felt so,, disconnected from my family, in a way, because my life has been so so different to any one of theirs, ever, ever was, and there's no one I can point to, really, much, to go, 'you're like me'. It's a silly thought, but a strong one.
I mustn't be the only one in the world to have grown up like I did, I've met other people who grew up similar to me, but there's no one in my family that's really similar to me, at all, that I know of, quite literally going all the way back to the 1500s - no one who I know had the same experiences to me in any way shape or form you can name - it's part of why I like Liverpool so much, because I can look at a building, and say, my great-great-great-grandmother knew that when it was new, after she came down from Orkney - I don't have anything else, I don't have any connection to a place that still stands as I knew it or somewhere I can go and say this is home - the people are the home, but even then, I don't have much of that - my parents, my one grandad, who lives away in France now, my aunt and uncles, now, a cautious little bit - but even then, it's not the same, I am only really close with my mum, because it was always just us, together on our own - and visits to my dad, sometimes, and to my mum's family when she was allowed to see them, and the constant movement that comes with living in vehicles with someone who gets restless when a place starts to feel like home (between a week and 6 months, usually) - the only actual place I've had time to feel like home is the farm in Wales, and that was me, on my own, sat watching swallows and bats fly out the window of a room that no longer exists (and where I am now, where I've been for 5 and a half years, that I have to leave in two weeks)
So I'm glad mum lives in the same country as me, now, so I can visit when I like, and that dad's been sober a year, now, so you can actually hold a conversation with him, it's nice to keep hold of that
I look like my dad, I have his defensiveness - I think like my gran, I've got her autism - I've got my mum's lack of focus and liking of projects (ADHD!) and my grandad's love for music - anything else is picking stuff out of the ether really, so it's nice, if nothing else than the way I look (and the way I worry), to be able to say, in a tiny weeny little way, here, look, I might stand alone here, but it's still my forest, there's my name
Oh I've made myself cry again, dear me
It is a nice thing, tho, and thanks for being nice about it, I can definitely see where you're coming from
I didn't mean to go on a one and get like this, sorry

Speaking of taking it to 11, I'm glad Glenn stood up for not throwing away stereotypes entirely just to be subversive. Ofc it's valuable that Mac's not a gay man stereotype, but as a queer Asian who fits stereotypes, it's sad when tv goes TOTALLY in the opposite direction because they're worried they'll "do a stereotype" (obv there's good, nuanced and bad, harmful versions). There's proud defiance in leaning in sometimes. Do you think RCG worry about "bi Dennis" bc of evil bi stereotypes?
YES, i totally agree!! And it makes perfect sense that he feels that way, cuz Dennis does tend to embody a lot of common queer stereotypes from s1 all the way to s15... Way moreso than Mac ever has, imo. But its not so much that he felt like a plain caricature of those stereotypes (though obviously im not gonna act like in a lot of moments he's not being played up that way lol... 'boys are out tonight huh!?' but even Glenn admitted that was something he didn't want to be included in the episode as his character cuz it was "too broad" LMAO). He still feels like a character that has depth and is well-rounded, including those 'stereotypical' queer traits. So even before Glenn outright said that, it did feel like he had that mentality and I think that's also probably something that's gotten better with maturity lollll. But I was also rlly glad to hear him outright say that too, cuz it is, as you said, commonplace now for writers to keep trying to be "subversive" of stereotypes but that can backfire horribly and just make a lot of characters feel flat or inauthentic. So yeah it was rlly nice to hear that, and esp on the podcast which gets a lot of viewers.
And I do think that RCG are aware that there is a line they have to be be mindful of when it comes to how these characters' overall deviant nature might be perceived as being related to their queerness... Esp in the case of Dennis, and Mac as well. I think this concern was actually somewhat acknowledged in "The Janitor Always Mops Twice" (and tbh I'm surprised I haven't seen more analysis on this?? tho it definitely could've come up and just been purged at some point as a lot of s14 shit ended up being loll) because the way that episode framed not only Dennis, but Mac too, to fit into the "queer-coded villains" noir trope was--again, imo-- an acknowledgment of that. Like, they see the history of that trope in tv/film and how reductive it is. I think that the narrative is deeming that kind of characterization reductive because that episode is not told thru an objective POV, but it's filtered through Charlie's POV, and he clearly has some uh... complex feelings about his best friends' relationship and their respectively ambiguous and not-so-ambiguous sexualities LOL. But also in the past whenever a scene was through Charlie's POV (i.e. his flashback sequence in "Who Got Dee Pregnant?") it's been shown that he has pretty reductive views of the people in his life. Typically narrowing them down to a few traits, or saying shit that is very uh "ooc" (i.e. "yeah. dee inspired me. she said, "you're an awesome janitor, charlie. you can make this whole school slippery." I said, "sure, I'll give it my best shot." then she's, like, "let's be best friends." and I was, like, "sure, I'll give that my best shot, too." so we're best friends now.)... so... yeah. Plus, when you compare that episode's framing to the rest of s14 and that season's overall "oh god we're so afraid of fucking this all up" subtext (Thunder Gun 4, Right to Chop, Big Mo, etc.)... I definitely do think that's definitely a concern of theirs when it comes to that aspect of Dennis' writing as well LOL. and I think even they even sorta admitted to that dragging their feet on addressing Dennis' sexuality/his relationship with Mac as it has been the past couple of seasons in the s15 finale in a very on-the-nose way... ("oh, my god. It looks like he was dragging his feet back here. were you hanging on it?") lmaooo..

for the space related asks, ⭐️ & 🛰?
whee!! thank you!
⭐️ Star - Do you have a favourite character? If so, why are they your favourite?
Oh no a very hard question actually... Probably the answer is evidently Emily and Dee since I spend more time thinking and writing about them than any of my other characters. POSSIBLY if I had to choose out of the two of them I'd pick Dee because I am kind of a sucker for a sad sack loser with emotional problems and I deeply enjoy thinking up situations to make him happy and/or traumatised. I also enjoy overthinking his powers and what kinds of things I have to tweak about physics for him to exist with the functions I've given him. (Such as recently I've thought of new objections to the plausibility of time travel but I think I've also thought of a way to resolve them storywise which I personally think is very funny, but if I learn more about physics before it comes up it might change.)
I love Zoe a lot but she is much harder to write and to draw for some reason? I feel like she is clear in my head but never comes out right somehow. It's weird.
I have other characters from other stories that I love too... another favourite who is unrelated to this story is a guardian angel whose first guardee died prior to the story beginning; clearly the angel fucked up a bit with that but gets a second chance, but then is pretty lousy with the second person too!! Trying to push them to fill the shoes of the first person.
Recently I found out that the person who inspired my first 'canon nonbinary' character (I didn't know that was a thing at the time tho) has since come out as for real nonbinary, which obviously makes a lot of sense lol. It was mostly about this one very cool jacket they owned. But that character was a strong fave for a long time... the story was terrible and really problematic lolol but ah well. Probably all the good parts of that character have gone into Dee and Zoe anyway.
I LOVE THEM ALL ;_;
🛰 Satellite - Do you have a character who is very dependent on another character? Is it healthy or unhealthy?
WELL. Again... Emily and Dee are each other's most emotionally intimate relatinship... Dee again is more dependant on Emily than vice versa, and less healthy about it, although I would say it's overall good for them both (but I would say the healthy/unhealthy balance varies over time and may be affected by external factors...).
Zoe is still on the periphery a bit but.............. well there are/will be some dynamics of questionable health there. She doesn't have particularly healthy attachments and is still not exactly over her previous friendship dynamic of being the second best friend of two besties who were shitty to her, and is still kind of stuck in the mode of 'trying to be exactly what the other person wants so they will like me'. Which Emily is not really aware of because she doesn't ever do that. Although the kinds of things Zoe plays up to try to be friends with her probably aren't as bad as what she has done to get OTHER people to like her, and she's relatively confident that Emily isn't going to use any of the stuff she knows against her.
Again, in terms of OTHER characters I have a couple where they are both disabled in various ways but one has more problems with mobility and communication than the other, and also had to be rescued from a kind of slavery by the other, which naturally gives the rescuer some pause for thought about the power dynamic there and whether she's ~taking advantage~ by falling in love with her at the same time (I mean by the time she even gets aware enough of her feelings lolol, gotta sort of pine without realising first!!)... but I'm trying to write that one as pretty healthy tbh, they're just trying to support each other through a difficult world yknow. And anyway the one who used to be a slave deliberately tried to square that debt immediately so it wouldn't be hanging over them both and is now mostly consumed with a quest for revenge lol. But also love.
I am going to.... stop rambling for now lol!!

duuuude that inseparables hyperfixiations has me on the biggest chokehold right now (again). I’m so fucking excited for it. and I’ve been creating random ideas/theories for it based on context clues in trailers/images/soundtrack— all of which is painfully obvious but I just wanna get my thoughts out ;)
‼️ mild spoiler warning
I’m interested to see how their going to portray the relationship struggles between Don and DJ. in "Use Your Imagination" (which slaps btw, go listen to it), it kinda explains how they "loose themselves to spite" and that Don "was lost in a dream/nightmare, too blinded to see he was loosing a friend". this is just after they are "swallowed by a whale" which you see in the first teaser. curiously, compared to the situation in the teaser, the other scene where they save the baby duckling, DJ is more helpful, being enthusiastically loyal as he is. but the teaser makes him seem more unsure of pitching in, most likely due to water being involved, since he cannot get wet. the obvious assumption here is just that, Don is just gonna be a bit ignorant and pushy and that’s what drives them apart.
now, the other day while I was thinking about Don and Dee friendship crumbs (because I like their little bond), i thought, they both typically want the same role in the "hero's journey/story" they're portraying (both societally and theatrically). they both know they’re more than what everyone assumes of them and they want room to grow and prove that. so I imagined the scenario when he is leaving the theater, how he may or may not imply that a part of him is going off to find his own quest so she can have that opportunity there (in both aforementioned aspects, and of course, for her later to actually prove she can genuinely accomplish shit on her own cause girlbossism)— AND WELL, YEAH it’s probably mostly subconsciously due to his frustration and determination to find his purpose in life being the biggest thing on his mind, cause ya know, everyone treats him like an idiot all the time and it’s kinda his breaking point here. but, I just like their little bond that they’ll have (I think)
I guess these kinda lead to my point on my clue as to what the theme is. generally it’s what it takes to be a good friend, a big part is you can’t ignore what’s important to your friends, and they have their own goals they can get to that you have to support. Both DJ and Dee seemingly will show this towards Don, but he might be a little more blindsided to that, cause his aforementioned imagination and determination being his main, overwhelming focus. DJ is lonely and needs someone who actually “appreciates him for himself” (as expressed in “Waffle Rap” lyrics). and Dee, simply just doesn’t want to feel weak and doesn’t need opportunities “given” to her, cause the whole point of her arc is she works hard to prove it herself. It all comes down to respecting your friends and not overlooking them and their needs, which I’m sure happens by the end.
another sub-theme idea that ties into Don’s arc that they also might be trying to portray here is that, you don’t necessarily have to be recognized as a legendary hero or jump to great lengths to have a good legacy. being a great friend and doing the right thing for the ones you love is certainly a powerful impact you could make initially. going by jeremie degruson’s other film’s messages, it might be along the lines of this tbh.
these are a few of my several cents I’m inserting here. if you read my ramblings on goofy belgian cartoons, thank you, I love you. stream puggy and the soundtrack for this movie (which is also by puggy) 🙌

i really liked the tags you added to my trash twins analysis! esp because you are right that not a lot of ppl in this community actually have or know much about npd, it is always super interesting to see your input on how dennis and his behavior point towards him havin npd/aspd. its refreshing seeing someone give insight on that that isnt just 'haha hes secretly a serial killer with no feelings so hes a psychopath!!!1!!' lmaooo
ahh thanks i thought your post itself was great, i really enjoy reading what people have to say about the way dee and dennis were raised , there's a lot of interesting stuff to pick up on and interpret. also so much more that could be said about dennis and personality disorders (as well as the rest of the gang), but with my current level of energy it's easiest to build off other people's observations tbh. for some reason i just started typing a shit ton of words here and i don't know why it happened, but-
it's kinda neat to me how that one common reaction that viewers have to dennis is in response to the persona we see he wants people to perceive him as (in his own desperate protective way), but we Also get to see the vulnerable, scared side of him and the way he puts on this act—and often, fans either ignore this side, or they have their sanist view of it and think it's even more evidence of him being a "psychopath". i know a lot of people do watch it only in a surface-level way, which i'm not going to criticise, but there's way more nuance to these characters than i guess a lot of people care to see. so if they are going to discuss it, i wish they'd be more thoughtful..
dennis is clearly a destructive, harmful person, but his actions don't mean he's "evil" or that he can't be a whole person with his own problems and feelings. that's one part of the show and his character that i really appreciate; i know there's been discussions in the past about this, but it's interesting how the show isnt a continuation of the all-too repeated idea that abusive people are one-dimensionally bad, purely evil, and not even people but more like. wickedness incarnate? like an entity that exists only to hurt & hate people. and there's the opinion that abusive characters shouldn't be portrayed as normal humans because that itself would somehow teach people to excuse their actions or think "but they still have some good in them", but that's more like. people's own responsibility to understand not to do. of course the gang can be cruel in cartoonish, heightened ways, but i feel with the understood rules of their world, it's not the exact same as real life actions (also the fact that they are indeed fictional characters). it's just important to have an understanding that being abusive is an active choice, and not something predestined because of personality disorders or whatever other qualities one might have!
to revisit the thing about dennis in reality vs how fans often view him- we see hints or direct portrayals of his true emotional state all throughout the show, but people insist on saying he's "emotionless"/has no feelings, even aside from his constant emotional outbursts. it's consistent with how real-life people with several cluster B personality disorders are invalidated (often seen as having contradictory symptoms/observable behaviour, and therefore faking emotions in order to be manipulative), and it's oddly kinda comforting because for me it just confirms my specific view of dennis. i just can't get over how many people who really like dennis and the show are fundamentally misunderstanding his character and insist on viewing him in a way that not only he himself is deeply hurt by (i know he isn't real btw), but also directly contradicts what we've always been shown about his real feelings, just because it fits the mould of the crazy psychopath that they want him to be. idk, sometimes it feels like people deliberately ignore some characters' complexities because they don't want their worldview to change so that they start viewing real people as equally complex and more than a stereotype.

I've been brainstorming ideas lately so I thought I'd make a post about what my dynamic with each member of the gang is like <3 (under the cut because it is a little long ajfkdls)
Mac: REALLY wants to be best buds. Doesn't realize it's because I'm bisexual. He just thinks there's ✨something about me✨ that's SO cool. I'm suspicious about some of the things he says but I'm not about to diagnose anyone with gay so. I'm happy to hang around him unless he starts getting rly religious on me. He wouldn't dig my views on that. He'd find them lukewarm at best and blasphemous at worst. Once he comes out things are better tho afjdksl We can still pal around tho, I can dig a good action movie and it's likely we'd quote die hard at each other. And I'd be a staunch defender of his duster bc I once had a jacket like that and it made everyone call me "cool trench coat girl" so it's cool, trust me
Dee: Thinks I'm a bit of a prude and doesn't get why I'm so happy all the time. But we get along okay. I'm always willing to help her in a pinch, especially with technology-related stuff, and she might not appreciate it the way she should but she does seem thankful, usually ajfkdsl i won't help her with some of the more crazy things she gets into and she respects it, but always asks and will try to bribe me first off ajfkdsl i just dont wanna get involved with anything too illegal afjdksl
Frank: Likes me well enough! When Charlie and I start dating and quickly get married, he's shocked. He didn't expect me to hang around with the gang for very long, I think. Even though, at that point, it had been years that we were all friends. Before Charlie and I became a couple, Frank would have a good time getting me with dumb jokes agfjklds Amatta. Updog. CD's. He's done it all. It's easy to get me bc i process audio so slowly ajfkdsl Wants me to cook the books for him and save him some time. I am too afraid to cook the books. He starts giving me some math problems out of context and I do them bc I'm obsessed with doing little math problems. I discover he was using the math to cook the books. I sigh and agree to keep doing it under the guise that this conversation never happened ajfklds and also i can have gin and tonics whenever i want. he knows im a light drinker so it's a deal
Dennis: Hooey boy. Oh no no. Dennis doesn't like me ajkflds But I also don't like Dennis. It's easy to clock the kind of person Dennis is after spending a few years around him. And for me, I could tell even sooner. And when he'd hit on my friends, acquaintances, or even me once, I'd put an end to it immediately. I was there for the D.E.N.N.I.S system speech he gave. And I hated it. I'm not one to speak outwardly often when I'm extremely bothered by things; i've had my emotions invalidated enough that when I feel strongly about something I step away and evaluate before giving my opinion. So I sat and let him tell about his system. And walked into the bathroom and had a panic attack afjkdsl people like Dennis terrify me. But I like being around Charlie so much, and I've made good friends with Dee and Mac, so I'm not leaving. I'm just not going to support his antics or let him hurt people close to me. Dennis, on the same token, resents the roadblocks I put up for him. Hates that I don't trust him or humor him. I'm not antagonistic, but I give him very little quarter, and it's obvious that I don't like him. He'll try to put up a front of cordiality, but everyone can tell it's cracking. The pot will boil over, eventually.
Charlie: Knew him in high school, but we didn't talk a lot. We had overlapping circles but I was quiet and he was a bit of a troublemaker. While we did have some nice interactions, it wasn't until we met as adults that we became pals! tbh I don't have a solid meeting decided yet ajdkasl my general idea is that he got himself into some trouble out on the sidewalk or in a store somewhere and i helped him out and we were both like 'hey. didn't i know you in high school?' ajfkdsl or maybe even that we got set up on some sort of blind date but Charlie and I can both be so dense that we hit it off well and even tho we liked each other immediately we kind just. started hanging out as friends ajfskdl i havent decided yet! but our dynamic before we started dating and got married was bestiesssss <3 Charlie wants to complain about the waitress and how she just doesn't appreciate him? there i am. Charlie's got some harebrained scheme to make a quick buck? i'm there! he needs someone to record and edit the videos of his breath-holding world record? yep, I'm good with cameras and computers, you can count on me! Kinda like the third amigo to him and Mac but I'm less likely to do anything SO dangerous or illegal. But they're likely to tell me a situation is less dangerous and ask me to be the camera guy for it and while i'm recording they are in ACTIVE DANGER and i just drop the camera to help and they're like "Ren!!! you missed the shot!!" "I saved your lives, you idiots!!" And I deal with it bc I have a major soft spot for Charlie and I also worry about him. If I'm not around to lessen the danger of his escapades, what'll happen to him? And of course, then pining you know cuz I know he's in love with the waitress and i've heard it all and I'm afraid he'll be obsessed with her forever but. Maybe someday he'll be open to dating someone else. and newsflash Ren he's been open the whole time pretty much for you. whether or not he realized it. the moment you'd say something he'd be there. and it might take time for him to completely let go of the waitress but you're so important to him and he'd get there. ah. i'm rambling a little now but you get the picture ajfkdsl
