So I've been thinking about OFMD and piracy as a metaphor for queerness/queer culture.
I'm sure many others have mentioned it, but I think the flag in "Our Flag Means Death" has a double meaning: a pirate's flag as well as a nod to the modern queer flags, since being queer/trans can be a death sentence for many.
The :"age of piracy" coming to an end reminds me of the outrageously queer culture of Weimar-era Berlin, which effectively ended when the Nazis took over in the early 1930's.
Gays. lesbians, trans people, cross dressers, and everyone in between seemed to thrive in Weimar Berlin, just as they seem to on the high seas in OFMD.
The increasing threat of the British navy would obviously be the stand-in for the Nazi takeover in this reading.
One could also apply this metaphor to today's world and particularly the USA, where a queer renaissance in media and increasing awareness of gender.and sexuality diversity over the past 10-15 years clashes with a strong conservative backlash that fights to restrict and criminalize the queer community.

I am wasting time at work again but I must share what I found on Twitter - photos of this proto-punk gay gang from Weimar Germany who called themselves The Wild Ones:

"They're carrying the letters of the firm - but who carries the spirit?"
The tactic that anti-democratic forces try to mask themselves as progressive and "pro-freedom" (when they're actually just pro-control because for some fucking reason, they are terrified of others being individuals) is not new by any means. In fact, it's the oldest one in the book. It's what ultimately killed the first German democracy, and allowed Hitler and his nazis to take over.
It's a simple tactic. Those people who want nothing but power and control will go around and address and / or defend those who are in vulnerable positions (hence why we see "but the children!"-arguments so often, because kids are one of the most vulnerable groups out there, who are also unfortunately not in a position to push back against arguments like that). They will appeal to these groups, so they will repeat their arguments robotically without a second thought (hence why we see a rise in teenagers propagating purity culture in fandom). They will make their arguments black and white so they are easily understandable to those who are (still) naive, and repeatable just as easily (hence why there is this crushing demand for "perfection"). Why? To control the narrative, and to silence those who disagree.
Being anti-democratic is not about ideology and differences in opinion so much as it is about control. It's about refusing to accept another's individuality, and disrespecting their freedom to make their own choices. It's abusive, and we should never stop speaking up against it.

Classical Weimar
Tumblr media
Today, we're setting our sights on the picturesque town of Weimar, Germany, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Classical Weimar. This site is a captivating blend of history, literature, and art that will transport you to a bygone era of intellectual and creative enlightenment.
Weimar is often referred to as the "City of Poets and Thinkers" for its role in fostering intellectual and artistic creativity. It was a hub for writers, philosophers, and artists during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
In 1998, Classical Weimar was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and historical importance. It's a place where the legacies of Goethe, Schiller, and other luminaries of German literature and thought come to life.
Tumblr media
No visit to Weimar is complete without exploring the Goethe House, the former residence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This is where the renowned poet and writer penned many of his literary masterpieces.
Friedrich Schiller, another literary giant of the era, lived in Weimar as well. You can visit Schiller's Residence to learn more about his life and work, which greatly influenced German Romanticism.
This magnificent library is a treasure trove of knowledge and culture, housing a vast collection of books, manuscripts, and artwork. It's a place where the intellectual heritage of Weimar is preserved.
Tumblr media
Weimar's cultural heritage extends to the great outdoors. The Park on the Ilm is a picturesque park that was designed by the ducal family and reflects the ideals of the Enlightenment.
Today, Weimar continues to be a cultural hub, with museums, theaters, and events that celebrate its rich history and vibrant arts scene. The city's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage is truly inspiring.
In conclusion, Classical Weimar is a place where history, literature, and art converge in a celebration of human creativity and intellectual exploration. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it invites us to appreciate the enduring legacy of Enlightenment ideals and the impact of these intellectual giants on German and world culture. So, when you're ready to immerse yourself in a world of literature, philosophy, and creativity, Weimar is a destination that promises to enlighten and inspire. 🏰📚🌹

My shout-out to queer youtubers
Hbombs list was great but obviously not comprehensive. I watch a lot of video essayists and wanted to give a little love to the smaller channels that fall under the radar. Please feel free to add to this list!
let's talk about stuff/Sarah Zedig
If you've seen Jesse Gender's videos on the Matrix movies you may already be familiar with Sarah. She does excellent film and culture analysis with a lot of great conversations on paratext and outside influence in engaging with text. Her video on Tunic is one of my favorites.
youtube
Pamphleteer
No one makes videos like hers, which has the side effect making them a bit hard to describe. I will link one of my favorites which describes the disconnected temporality of being older when you discover you're queer.
youtube
Turbo Queer
Really really under watched channel. Skylar covers a lot of topics from video games, to anarchist history and modern events, to autistic life, to current politics. For a fun one check out her video on the SpongeBob strike episode.
youtube
Kaz Rowe
Kaz does a fantastic job examining modern myths and manufactured history primarily pertaining to western Europe, Victorian & Edwardian England, and 1800-1900s US. And of course, talking about historical queerness in all its ambiguities and evolutions. I highly recommend their video on Weimar Germany.
youtube
drapetomania
drapetomania interrogates the politics of low class and high class art and entertainment from a queer and Black perspective. Their art history videos alone cover many angles of white supremacist history I haven't seen anyone else discuss and I'm very excited to see more from them. They are also a very under viewed channel that more people should see!
youtube
I am error
Evelynn's channel primarily discusses video games in a presentation style and voice most similar to Action Button reviews. There's something just a bit more personal here though. I hesitate to say cozy since that word has a bit of an infantilizing connotation, maybe comforting is closer. She puts an immense amount of thought and empathy into the experience of playing video games and the personal narratives we build with them.
youtube
Swolesome
For more transmasc perspectives there's Swolesome. He has a lot of interesting insights into the more traditionally masculine and "broish" communities like fitness as well as commentary on recent trans issues.
youtube
Shonalika
Music, disability, and aggressively non-binary. Their video on gender presentation in heavy metal was really insightful. I would also check out the video "Why I Wear Gloves" for more insight on invisible disabilities.
youtube
Vivian Strange
Vivian delights in being a bit of a contrarian- something I really appreciate. She's probably going to challenge you and you're probably going to disagree at times, which is what makes her channel so important. Her video on Marquis De Sade is powerful and a must watch (if you can stomach the subject material, although I would encourage you to try). I haven't seen her most recent video on Saw yet but I am extremely excited to.

completely agree based on my observations thus far. it seems like germans generally view israels existence as the “good” ending, as a disruption in the flows of history. i see it as a continuation of endless destruction and humiliation and dispossession of stateless people at the hands of the powerful which characterizes the hellish unity of our modern world. they care more about the idea of jews being strong together in their country than the actual reality that israel has perverted literally everything culturally valuable about jewishness and is completely dependent on the west, hardly a true example of jewish self determination, as if self determination through ethnonationalism is really even an appealing goal. maybe they should put more effort into supporting the revival of a diverse and strong german jewish culture than rabidly defending israel since one year of the weimar republic has created more worthwhile cultural output than 75 years of israel. you can listen to the podcast with dische-becker here

Pan Comforting Psyche (1857-58) “Marble, 101 x 132 x 67 cm” [Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany] -- Reinhold Begas (German; 1831 - 1911)
Deserted by Amor, her lover, Psyche bemoans her curiosity and its consequences. Agitated yet demure, she is comforted by Pan, the otherwise frivolous god of nature. The subject allowed Begas to unite a range of contrasts within one sculpture: female/male, tender/rough, youthful/old.
Reinhold Begas was a German sculptor. He was an apprentice under Christian Daniel Rauch and Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann. From 1856 to 1858 he travelled around Italy where he was influenced by Arnold Böcklin and Franz Lenbach to move towards a naturalistic style in sculpture. In 1861 he was appointed professor at the Weimar art school before winning the competition to create the statue of Schiller at Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin. From 1870 he was the leading artist working in the plastic arts in the Kingdom of Prussia. His artworks dominated the urban landscape, particularly of Berlin, during the German empire. Several sculptures in Berlin bear testament to his high reputation, such as the Neptune fountain in bronze, originally erected on Schlossplatz, the figure of Alexander von Humboldt in front of the Humboldt-Universität or the statue of Otto von Bismarck in the city’s.

There is suffering, yes, there is despair and self-harm and ostracism. But Berlin’s Third Sex also offers something you may not expect of Wilhelmine Berlin — fun. To encounter Hirschfeld’s report today is to experience an electric charge of recognition. With its all-night parties, pansexual drag, and campy stage personas, with its elaborate codes of communication, layers of irony, and pop culture references, it reads like a dress rehearsal, in starched collars, for modern Western queer life.
