Week Ten - Class Content
Lecture
This week’s lecture was focused on the Bauhaus. Founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus was an art and design school in Germany that lasted until 1933, when the Nazi party put a stop to it. The school was based on William Morris’ socialist principles, and wanted to explore the role that art and design could play in improving life. The word ‘Bauhaus’ is literally translated to the words build + house. It was located in Weimar from 1919-1928, then moved to Dessau from 1928-1930, and was then moved to Berlin from 1930 until its closure. Over this time period the Bauhaus had 3 main leaders.
The spirit of the Bauhaus was very progressive and free, rebelling against the socialist norms of the time. The parties, theatrical performances, and challenges to gender identity were considered outrageous by many. The structure of the Bauhaus had students beginning with a 6 month preliminary course, where the goal was to de-learn and relearn - forget traditional academy methods and thoughts on art. Then, students would spend 3 years in the workshops, where they would focus on different materials and skills. The most talented students could go to the building stage and study architecture, or become assistants and teachers themselves. Some famous names who ran the preliminary course were Johannes Itten, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Josef Albers. Each of these teachers bought a different perspective, however that main goals and ideals remained consistent.
Over the 14 years the Bauhaus was active, they published 14 books about their practice, each focusing on different creatives. Along with this, Herbert Bayer created the universal bayer typeface which was used in many Bauhaus publications. The typeface was all lowercase which was radical at the time. The Bauhaus GmbH was a design agency that ran from 1925-1930 within the Bauhaus. The agency made money to help run the Bauhaus by working on industrial contracts, which helped the school become independent of the state. The key things that I learnt from this lecture was the importance of play and experimentation. Without this process, the final outcome will not be as developed or new. Another important thing is to respect materiality and reduce wastage of materials.

"Should women wear makeup at work" Part 2
To recap from part 1:
- Both men and women use sexual displays at work to feel confident and be likable to others, because attractiveness and sexuality are linked
- Men's status displays communicate wealth, competence, harnessed potential for aggression (strength)
- Men can lower their status with displays of overt sensuality and allusions to sex work
- Women do not have a traditional status display for competence and strength
- Women's displays of wealth traditionally relate to a man's ability to provide for them
In this post I'm going to "blow apart" the third and forth items.
As I said in part one, it's not as though men's status increases proportionally to the sensuality he puts on display. There is certainly a sweet spot.
As JLP says elsewhere in the interview, in reference to situations that don't explicitly have a dress code, that sweet spot is "somewhere between a suit and boxer shorts". That's the essence of women's challenge.
It's worthwhile to look back in history to understand the situation. Men's modern Western clothing derives from basically two sources: military uniforms and sporting clothes. Whenever we see pictures of frilly frock coats from the 18th century, that's just a pimped-out version of a military uniform. The modern button-front shirt with the laid collar is 19th century athletic wear. The polo shirt was basically the same idea but it came later. Sportcoats - the stereotypical one being brown wool tweed with elbow patches - were worn as outdoors-wear for hunting, and they're not extremely dissimilar from the design of a WWI uniform jacket.
Upper class women's clothing was never designed with the concerns of combat and sporting in mind. It was just meant to look a certain way. While corsetry isn't the constricting evil it was made out to be, floor-length skirts and robes that are suspended away from the body get wet, pick up dirt, and become a fire hazard. Silk isn't a very hard-wearing fabric. Lower-class women's clothing has always been more functional, with shorter hems, tougher fabrics that suit the climate, and slimmer or shorter sleeves. The issue of pants was seemingly a religious one. Cross-dressing is forbidden by the Bible, and pants are thought to be immodest because they show the shape of the legs and the space between them. While pants for women are beyond acceptable and not really forbidden, there is still a vestige of skirts being more "appropriate", more formal than pants, and a skirt- or dress-wearing woman to be feminine and more respectable than a pants-wearing woman if one were forced to choose. Pants are fine for most contexts, but women's formal suits and tuxedos, and jumpsuits with the same material and embellishment as a dress, are still very polarizing. There was also an instance a few years ago of a woman being kicked out of a red-carpet event for wearing flat shoes - if I recall correctly, they were Louis Vuitton and were metallic or covered in crystals - instead of heels. They weren't men's shoes, and they couldn't be confused for work boots, but somehow they were considered to be not meeting the standard of the event's dress code.
Again, women have a contradicting set of standards. While practical clothing for hunting, sport, and the military were associated with male prestige, practical clothing for women - flat shoes and pants - continues to read as low-class, or at least lower class than fine fabrics, heels, and skirts. At the same time, there continues to be evidence that a sexualized appearance negatively impacts how others rate a woman's competence.
But, a heavily sexualized appearance also negatively affects men as well...
I haven't seen studies that directly deal with sexualization of men and competence, but there are hints of it in other studies, that show negative perceptions of competence in men wearing tank tops, exposed underwear, beach clothing, skinny jeans, deep-v shirts, too much jewelry, too much hair products, etc. There's a perception of sleaziness in a shirt with too many buttons undone, an animal print suit, or a metallic polyester shirt that looks like something from Night at the Rocksbury. Perhaps this isn't an issue of discrimination against women, but an issue of communication between men's style that shuns the "contributions" of sex work and things adjacent to it, and women's style that integrates - often to naive wearers - styles that come from sex work.
With that in mind, what is the history of makeup? It's complicated.
There's been a constant up-and-down regarding the acceptability of makeup. One century, makeup is normal and even men are wearing it, and the next, it's solely the mark of a whore.
America is a strange case in this respect, because since the first settlers arrived, the history has been almost three centuries of "makeup is for whores". Then, enter the 1920s, when film stars normalized makeup for everyday wear. Then in the 30's and 40's, red lipstick had become patriotic, seeing as Germany and Italy assumed the "makeup is for whores" stance (it's worth noting the Nazis were responding to the explosion of sex work and cinema in the Weimar Republic). In the 60's, a woman could be branded a mentally ill lesbian for not wearing lipstick.
From the 70's onward, designers began taking inspiration from sex work, and now we're in a place where a bra, hotpants, a fur coat, and thigh boots paired with heavily-contoured drag queen makeup is high fashion. In a weird way, though, perhaps there is some truth to the association with female power and the stripperiffic. A corset and high leather boots feel like armor, and ripped fishnets are unfussy and conjure images of tucking a knife in the waist of your cut-off shorts 'cause you can wield it if trouble finds you. Even in fascist countries - especially in fascist countries - men may have married the girl with virginal, white cotton, high-waist panties, and had missionary intercourse with her; but they paid hard-earned money to let their dark side out with the woman in the black lace thong. Getting whipped and stepped on, a freaky dance, or something involving a swing set, for a long time, wasn't normally something men could ask their wives for. Who has often inherited kingdoms more often? The king's wife, who he married to form a political alliance; or the king's courtesan or concubine, who he chose himself? Women channel the prostitute because she has more agency and power than the submissive, virtuous, pious maiden. The prostitute is colorful and exciting. She has better stories and has met more interesting people. She's seen the highs and lows of the human condition. She's ruled men in her own way.
The prostitute exchanges sex for agency and power, but do the men she engages with also see it that way?
Dave Chapelle said, of women dressing in a way evocative of sex work, "If you're not a whore, why are you wearing a whore's uniform?"
Exchanging sex for power in the workplace is quid pro quo sexual misconduct. If you're not exchanging sex, what are you exchanging, then, for power? Probably something like labor, expertise, revenue, technical support, reliability, etc.
Perhaps I just probed and hit bottom here. If I'm building an image of competence for women working alongside men, it doesn't look like sex work. I don't think that's discriminatory toward women, because men are also punished for appropriating the masculine aesthetics of sex work. It's just more difficult for women due to how ingrained the aesthetics of sex work are into mainstream fashion, how ambiguous the standards for "proper dress" are for one situation or another, the lack of history and norms of women in work, and how those make it easier for women to unintentionally slip from expressing themselves and being likably attractive to self-objectification and being too sexualized for the setting.
I suppose the first rule could be: If it's associated with sex work, don't wear it to non-sex work.
It's necessary to clarify: no one deserves or is "asking" to be sexually assaulted or harassed at work based on anything, including what they wear. There seems to be a fine line between saying "be aware of how others could misinterpret the messages you send" and victim blaming. The person making the unwanted sexual advances is the one responsible for their behavior. Acknowledging that the existence of dirtbags is inevitable doesn't excuse their behavior, and acknowledging they have predictable triggers does not absolve them from responsibility for the damage they do to others.

The Definition Of Architecture By Architects And Experts
Furthermore, I think that individuals respect as a physical factor but not as a profession or profession because Architects do not get paid so nicely, and folks additionally journey many instances just to see structure in cities. And, I learn an article about that people believe that architects are wealthy. Do you suppose that folks see architecture with extra importance right now?
Notable amongst these is the Deutscher Werkbund, shaped in 1907 to provide better high quality machine-made objects. The rise of the profession of industrial design is often placed here. Following this lead, the Bauhaus faculty, based in Weimar, Germany in 1919, redefined the architectural bounds prior set all through history, viewing the creation of a constructing as the last word synthesis—the apex—of art, craft, and technology. The design exercise of the architect, from the macro-level to the micro-level .
Tumblr media
Below is a comparability of the pay between architects and a number of the jobs that are involved in the constructing, design, and development business. Urban design is the method of designing and shaping the bodily options of cities, towns, and villages. The main architectural undertakings were the buildings of abbeys and cathedrals. From about 900 CE onward, the actions of both clerics and tradesmen carried architectural knowledge across Europe, resulting in the pan-European styles Romanesque and Gothic. The style of design and methodology of development of buildings and different bodily buildings.
Of course, I additionally perceive that not many architects consider this as a result of they don't seem to be paid nicely, however I don't attempt to discuss with the economic aspect. What I imply is that folks admire more architecture right now than earlier than.
Some of his buildings embrace the Barcelona Pavilion, Farnsworth House, Seagram Building, and the 330 North Wabash. Ranking 4th on this listing of the highest 10 largest architecture corporations on the planet is Perkins Eastman, a world architecture, interior design, city design, planning, landscape architecture, graphic design, and project administration agency. Perkins Eastman is among the largest New York-based mostly design firms per Crain’s New York Business, one of many largest architectural firms within the United States. Lats 12 months Perkins Eastman generated USD 261,631,130 million from revenue fees — making it one of the world’s biggest architecture firms.
The follow of the architect, where architecture means offering or rendering skilled companies in connection with the design and construction of buildings, or constructed environments. Architecture (Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων arkhitekton "architect", from ἀρχι- "chief" and τέκτων "creator") is both the method and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or different constructions. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are sometimes perceived as cultural symbols and as artistic endeavors.
If you perceive general geometry and physics you might be good; having addition, subtraction, multiplication and sometimes division abilities are inspired architect andover. Aspiring architects should challenge themselves with as much math as they can handle .
The international architecture business continues to grow pushed by financial growth and an infusion of government and company-funded constructing initiatives. Most of the growth is being led by the highest 10 largest architecture firms in the world on this record, nonetheless, structure corporations ranking outdoors the top 10 are all having fun with stellar success in the field. The architecture trade’s income is predicted to develop at an annualized rate of 2.2% to USD 317 billion over the 5 years.
As different architects like Jenney started implementing steel to permit for taller structures, the skyscraper was born. Sullivan was instrumental in creating a new practical design for these new tall buildings somewhat than sticking with outmoded traditions. Because of this, some refer to Sullivan as the "Father of the Skyscraper" .
I nonetheless never acknowledged architects earn nothing nor can support a family. Also, when purchasers hold wanting extra for less, architects aren't within the state of affairs to simply stroll away. I actually have been wondering this as a result of many people consider that architects are wealthy, but architects do not see it the same way as different folks.
Historical civilizations are sometimes identified with their surviving architectural achievements. Le Corbusier embraced functionalism, rejecting extreme nonstructural ornamentation, and favored the fashionable materials of concrete and steel in his buildings.
This supplies incentive for the client to be obtainable and to present adjustments in a well timed manner. After the design is settled on, the project’s scope is better recognized and a more accurate per square foot or proportion payment can be assessed.
Wren was a professor of astronomy at Oxford who came to architecture although his curiosity in physics and engineering. In the 1660s, he was commissioned to design the Sheldonian Theater at Oxford and visited Paris to check French and Italian baroque types. In 1666, Wren had completed a design for the St. Paul's Cathedral dome.

One week after it was accepted, nonetheless, the Great Fire of London raged by way of the city, destroying most of it -- including the cathedral. Although born Christian, Sinan was drafted into the Janissary Corps and converted to Islam.

From Berlin with Love
Feel free to take your time, but make sure you stamp your ticket or beware the ticket collector’s unsympathetic wrath, representing just one side of the many sided Berlin. Berlin has a special, peculiar, and particular history, and although it’s described by countless guides as the design city of today, it’s always been a design conscious city. In the early 20th Century, it was the first place in Europe to slice ornaments from building facades in a committed embrace of streamlined modernism.
Much has changed across the city’s façade since, but underground on the U-bahn you can clearly observe the blended traces of Berlin’s design history: some stations are Art Nouveau and German Jugenstil in style, others Bauhaus, 70s futurism, or contemporary, pastel-colored minimalism. It’s been nearly 30 years since the fall of the wall and above ground any signs are mostly gone, but the Cold War era’s clash of opposites remains on the U-Bahn: austere Soviet designs adorn former Eastern stations, and elaborate floral motifs carved in stone are preserved in the former Western ones. The only period not present along the platforms is the Nazi era, when stations were used for bomb shelters. Then again, as you pass through the morose platform of Mohrenstraße, you might feel a little chill learning that the red marble encasing the platform is recycled from Hitler’s former Reich Chancellor Building.
Finding your way—way finding—in this design conscious city, with its design conscious subway, is no simple task, but the U-bahn’s network system, organized by the renowned German typographer Erik Spiekermann and his agency MetaDesgin since 1992, attempts to ease your way and get you to where you want to go. It’s a riot of colors, and a brew of squares, circles and pictograms: This noisy system inherits the chaos of 19 different S-Bahn and U-bahn lines. Berlin is not so much a city formed around a central core but a constellation of separate planets each with its own peculiar forms of life, abstractly linked together by the network of subway tracks.
Because it’s Spiekermann that first guides us through Berlin’s underground, our first stop will be Bhf Bülowstrasse, to take a stroll up Potsdamer Strasse to Spiekermann’s p98a gallery and letterpress workshop. The street was once the locus for the edgy ambiguities of 1920s Weimar cabaret culture and Marlene Dietrich androgyny; today, it houses galleries, non-descript office blocks, and one euro bargain stores, as well as a conspicuously slick Acne shop, and the workplaces of local design studios like the modern, sophisticated HelloMe and the riotous, ramshackle illustration duo 44Flavours. World’s apart in style, but neighbors here in Berlin, which loves to mix things up.
Spiekermann’s p98a is the area’s most popular destination for visiting designers, and plenty of agencies book master-classes in letterpress with this master designer. Glimpse through the window, and you might spy Spiekermann himself high fiving and punching the air with his fist: his old school “no-bullshit” attitude makes him the champion of many, and an irritation—the dad rock of design—to others.
A short walk away from this letterpress haven—or at U-Bahn station Nollendorfplatz—is the great Bauhaus Archive, perched above the canal like an impassive white wave rising from the water. Erected in the 70s, the museum’s architecture draws is loosely inspired by an archive conceived by Bauhaus founder and architect Walter Gropius in the 1960s. Inside, a study in patience and precision, hushed art historians and design researchers sit bent over books, and the permanent collection displays iconic relics from Germany’s early modern years: great weaves by textile artist Anni Albers, paintings by Paul Klee, steel armchairs by Marcel Breuer, and other objects of design from the 20s and 30s produced by the famed and influential Bauhaus school.
The Bauhaus Archive. Image by BBB3viz.
Close by, on the other side of the sprawling Tiergarten Park with its dense cluster of pine trees, sits Berlin’s Hansaviertel. If German’s cool modernism emerged from the Bauhaus in the 20s, then this neighborhood was one of modernism’s climaxes: the housing development was built after World War II in a derelict area, constructed as part of the International Building Exhibition of 1957. Along the leafy, quiet streets are batteries of tower blocks, ribbon buildings, two modernist churches, and a glass library, designed by the period’s most significant architects.
After a morning at Spiekermann’s p98a, it makes sense to visit the Hansalviertel not only to see this plastic clad “city of tomorrow” but to seek out the Buchstabenmusum (called the “Alphabet Museum” in English) situated quietly under the tracks of the over-ground station Bellevue. The first museum in the world to preserve and display letters from public spaces and provide information about their origin and construction, the Alphabet Museum was founded 11 years ago by graphic designer Barbara Dechant, who began collecting after she first rescued from a dumpster a car radio sign reading “A U T O R A D I O”. Hundreds of letters destined for scrap heaps have been salvaged and preserved in a dusty storage unit; there’s neon, metal, and wooden characters in a variety of styles and colors— amidst the letters and dirt, you can construct a story of Berlin and sense a few ghosts.
Back on the U-Bahn, following the many symbols devised by Spiekermann, head to the station Kottbusser Tor, in the Kreuzberg district, for lunch. This bucolic, graffitied neighborhood teems with bars, co-working hubs, dentists, falafel shops, gambling houses, fruit markets, ice cream shacks, as well as concept stores like the stylish fashion destination VooStore, and the chaotic zine shop Motto books, but walking along the area’s wide pavements, you can easily ignore how packed together everything is. There is a kind of discreet harmony to it all, as though it was always meant to be this way; Berlin as energy, and disguise.
The Kottbusser Tor transit stop and the market hall. Photos by Ina Niehoff.
From here, head towards Markethalle Neun, a market place or “culinary epicentre” situated under a large, broken roof and crammed with international food vendors advertising their fair on home-made posters and handsomely scribed blackboards. Today’s signs framing another Berlin: Cheese platters & Olives. Veggie Wurst. Craft beer. Kimchi Burgers. Ginger Lemonade. Freshly Baked Ciabatta.
This is a lunch spot for co-workers busying themselves behind the glass windows of storefronts, or trickling out from former factory buildings that have been converted into spacious offices. Spot a group of women who whimsically but provocatively call themselves “Parallel Universe” sat together in the market hall drinking ginger lemonade on a wooden picnic bench: this group of six female illustrators have gathered to swap advice on art directors—who pays on time, who is best to work with—and to collaborate on illustrations for an upcoming Antifa march. Since 2012, Cynthia Kittler, Kiikka Laakso, Kati Szilágyi, Laura Breiling, Ji Hyun Yu, and Barbara Ott have banded together to form this important all-female collective, using their social media platforms to promote and highlight one another’s output. Better together, stronger side by side. Another Berlin in motion, up-to-date, but part of its historic momentum.
Nearby, after sipping organic lemonade and planning with Parallel Universe, the Museum of Things. A small curiosity tucked above an art bookstore on Orienenstrasse, this collection of glass cabinets features simple, everyday but also marvelous things from the past and near present: every blue Nivea jar since the company first began, biscuit tins, plastic at the back of the museum as if it were no big deal at all—an original Frankfurter Kitchen, a milestone in domestic architecture that’s considered the forerunner of the modern fitted kitchen. All of this finds its home in Berlin, where the elsewhere, the other, the uncanny and the new, whether practical or impractical, always belongs.
The Museum of Things will inspire you make your own things, and luckily, there’s a place close by to help you. Towering above a roundabout near the U-Bahn station Moritzplatz sits the great Modular—the ultimate art supply store, artistically stacked with pens, markers, pexiglass, plywood, stationary, pompoms, and anything else that you’ll ever need to make any thing you’ve ever wanted to make, even objects from your dreams. The German designer and illustrator Sarah Illenberger is in Modular today, intently collecting bright colored supplies that she’ll use for her next still-life cover commission for ZEITmagazin. She and her intern pick up yellow paint and blue and pink cardboard, before heading outside to the community garden on the other side of the road, where they cut great leafs from bushes. Illenberger will paint these with geometric patterns and then photograph them against the bright card later today. Yes, signs of another Berlin.
Wherever you’re staying in Berlin—the boutique design hotel 25hours Bikini Berlin near Tierpark, a colorful and energetic hostel near Schlesische Tor U-bahn, or a relatively cheap Airbnb in the Neukölln district with tall windows, wooden floors and a sunny balcony—on your walks to and from the U-Bahn, you’ll notice the posters. Berlin is a city where posters really mean something to a neighbourhood: where people stop in the street to carefully write down the information on prints as if they were hung on a community billboard. Posters communicate what’s happening around the corner, maybe a new club night, an exhibition, or a vegan burger pop-up event. Posters wrap around street lamps layered over all old ones, becoming dense, ghostly rolls that echo event’s and fashion’s long lost—in winter, these rolls get heavy and wet, sliding down towards the pavement like pulp, only to get propped up again by kids on bicycles in the summer, who use glue trays slung over their shoulders and large brooms to slap up each month’s new run of prints. In 1855, the city began erecting rounded advertising columns on the street corners to house the continuous flux of new poster designs. If the U-bahn is Berlin’s design history, then these advertising columns—although built long ago—are home to the design of today. New Berlin constantly appears through its posters.
The Berlin poster is naturally an especially beloved medium for the city’s designers— it’s not simply a mundane advert that people indifferently stroll past but a vital activating communication tool necessary for navigating nightlife, the gallery scene, and local events. It’s why Berlin clubs, generating the city’s dancing heartbeat, invest so much in their creation: the fabled Berghain, which legend claims is the world’s best techno club with its weekly congregation of black clad regulars wearing BDSM studded collars and Adidas caps, plays careful attention to the design of its monthly fliers and listings. Each month’s new posters feature a dark and atmospheric slice of original artwork, articulating and amplifying the club’s mythical night-life pull. A call to action for the great Berlin night, where the city begins and ends.
Visiting Mitte, the central borough in Berlin. Photo by Ina Niehoff.
The walk back to the U-bahn, to start again after one of those nights, you’ll pass an advertising column featuring a particularly neat, eye-catching placard—the poised influence of Swiss design is unmistakable, and its gorgeous serif typography is paired with an elusive background image, hinting at yet another Berlin yet to come. It’s the work of graphic design studio NODE, based in Berlin and Oslo, Norway, an intellectual and meticulous studio whose considered and theoretical output is a hallmark of Berlin’s contemporary art world. On this modern poster, large letters read “HKW,” standing for the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, a conference hall and exhibition space that hosts art, culture, and design events. Depending on what month it is, perhaps the yearly Typo Berlin conference is taking place, or Transmediale, a cerebral technology and art festival. Berlin, where conferences never end.
HKW was constructed as part of the International Building Exhibition of 1957 project and resembles a bright orange oyster rising form the ground. An event titled Miss Read is typical of events held there; a busy art book and self-publishing fair that draws in book lovers from around the country. German publishers and independent magazine makers sit behind their make-shift stalls, showcasing intricately bound tomes, sleek poetry chapbooks, colorful manifestos, risograph comics, monographs with knitted covers, experimental type specimens, and endless other papery surprises. Berlin is made of paper as much as memory, metal, and concrete.
The magazines available at this crowded, popular event are similar to those you can purchase in a store in the Mitte district of the city, close to the Weinmeister U-bahn station, called Do You Read Me?! It’s niche assortment of magazines sit on minimal black shelving. There are magazines here for every mood and every taste: one for redheads, another for dog lovers, another for female soccer players, another that tells the history of a different street each issue, and also more enigmatic, challenging, consistently well-designed choices. Mitte is a tidy district, a place of cafes that serve impressive slabs of classic avocado toast and that’s home to ambitious start ups which dot the streets under the shadow of the TV tower’s vigilant orb. If there is a center to proudly centerless Berlin, then perhaps it’s Mitte, which literally means “center” and is, at least in the prosaic geographical sense, in the middle of the city. The tall office of Freunde von Freunden perches snuggly in one of the area’s clean streets; the ultimate go-to blog for motivated lifestyle dreamers, Freunde von Freunden records the energetic lives of Berlin’s creative scene with breezy, sophisticated photography. Berlin: always aware of itself, without giving too much away.
A swan chillaxing in Berlin. Photo by Ina Niehoff.
It’s while traversing the neat, methodical streets of Mitte (passing by the KW Institute of Contemporary Art, a four-story gallery with beautifully designed exhibition catalogues, and Viktor Leske, an avant-garde hair dressing salon where few leave without an undercut) that you stumble across the neat, methodical studio of international star illustrator Christoph Niemann. He works with his spectacles perched on his nose in his white and silver office behind a storefront’s glass window—a literal spectacle for passers-by; children press their faces up to the glass to watch him sketch. It’s so immaculately clean in his studio, a kind of comment on Berlin’s dirt, and he’s penning away on Post-It notes bought at Modular, devising a plan for his next New Yorker cover. From Berlin with love; design for the rest of the world.
After standing and watching, enthralled by process, by the materializing of yet more Berlin, you might then spot another poster, another message, and be directed somewhere else, somewhere new, the Berlin still being made, still being invented. Or you might dive back down into the U-bhan, taking refuge in the depths of history. Moving on, without rushing, because Berlin time takes its time, to another brunch, to a beer on the canal, to something crazy underground or enterprising on the streets—moving slowly, not quickly, surrounded by designs and designers, form and content, interpreting the language and style of Berlin, a city always becoming itself, where something new always seems to be starting.

Herbert Bayer born in 1900, the son of a government tax collector, in the small Austrian village of Haag am Hausruck.
Bayer entered into an apprenticeship under the architect and designer Georg Smidthammer, with whom Bayer learned drawing, painting, and architectural drafting, inspired by nature and without formal knowledge of art history. In 1920,  Bayer discovered the theoretical writings of the artist Vassily  Kandinsky, as well as Walter Gropius’ 1919 Bauhaus  manifesto. In it Gropius declared the necessity for a return to  crafts, in which were found true creativity and inspiration.
Bayer traveled to Weimar to meet Gropius in October of 1921  and was immediately accepted into the Bauhaus. There, he  was deeply influenced by the instruction of Kandinsky, Johannes Itten and Paul Klee.
After the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925, Walter Gropius appointed him the director of the newly founded printing and advertising workshop at the Bauhaus Dessau. After leaving the Bauhaus in 1928, Bayer worked as a designer in Berlin until 1938, when pressure from the Nazi government  forced his emigration.
He settled in New York, and in the same year he designed the exhibition “Bauhaus 1919–1928” for the Museum of Modern Art. 30 years later, the exhibition “50 Jahre Bauhaus (50 years of Bauhaus)” in Stuttgart was also set up according to his design.
Bayer later became the director of the design department at the Container Corporation of America. He worked as a creative consultant for a number of important advertising agencies and department stores.

Merkel Gets Backing for Fourth Term After Months of Suspense
BERLIN—Germany’s Social Democrats agreed to prolong their unpopular ruling coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives, ending a period of political uncertainty unprecedented in the country’s recent history.
The vote lifted the last hurdle for Ms. Merkel to start her fourth, and likely last, term as leader of Europe’s largest economy nearly half a year after an inconclusive general election left the country without a clear ruling majority.
The vote among just 460,000 SPD members kept the political establishment on tenterhooks for weeks, as the left-leaning party split on whether to enter their third alliance with Ms. Merkel following their worst post-World War II election result last September.
The vote was surprisingly clear, with 66% of SPD members endorsing the coalition in a mail-in ballot, the results of which were unveiled on Sunday.
Related
Party officials said a new government would now be formed by March 14, replacing the caretaker administration that has administered the country since last September.
Ms. Merkel re-election as chancellor by parliament, now a formality, will allow Berlin to turn to pressing foreign policy issues, including engaging in a debate on reforming the European Union launched by French President Emmanuel Macron who wants to overhaul Europe’s common currency, the euro.
“It was a very, very important democratic process for our country and it has re-established the SPD—this is very important for our future…this will give us strength for the process of renewal,” said Olaf Scholz, designated finance minister and acting SPD chairman.
The protracted coalition-building was the longest since the Weimar Republic in the 1930s. Ms. Merkel’s early efforts to forge an alliance with the pro-business Free Democrats and the environmentalist Greens collapsed last November.
Ms. Merkel’s lackluster election victory—her Christian Democratic Union won 32.9%, the worst result since 1949—and the ensuing stalemate have dented the chancellor’s authority in her own camp. While she remains popular with the public, most analysts believe this will be her final term, as the poor election showing has prompted party critics to call for her replacement. No chancellor has served more than four terms.
As a concession to the SPD, the new government will depart somewhat from the German orthodoxy of fiscal restraint. Before the vote, the SPD and Ms. Merkel’s party brokered a coalition agreement outlining some €46 billion ($57 billion) in new spending, mainly on welfare benefits, that are likely to consume most of the budget surplus the federal government was originally expecting to generate during the current parliament.
Ms. Merkel also conceded to the SPD influential, big-budget government posts, including the foreign, finance and labor portfolios, causing anger in her own ranks. The deal also included a pledge to increase Germany’s contribution to the EU budget to make up for the shortfall that will result from Britain leaving the bloc.
The public’s backing for the grand coalition has dropped since January as the talks have dragged on. With the SPD’s ratings now below its election result, most polling institutes give the CDU and SPD less than 50% support among voters.
“No one believes that a new grand coalition will deliver something new or govern better,” said Manfred Güllner, head of Forsa, a leading polling agency. Mr. Güllner said the SPD would continue bleeding votes, some of them to the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany, an anti-immigration and anti-Islam group that went from no presence in parliament to being the largest opposition force, with 12.6% at the election.
The party, known as AfD, capitalized on the backlash from Merkel’s open-door migration policy that has allowed more than one million people to seek asylum in Germany since 2015. The AfD and another new party, the radical Left, have been ruled out as potential coalition partners by all others, making forming a government far more complicated than just a decade ago.
In light of Germany’s political fragmentation, the rebooted grand coalition was the “best Europe could hope for,” said Thorsten Benner, head of Global Public Policy Institute, a left-leaning political think tank. But he warned that the “new normal” of unwieldy multiparty governments based on complicated consensus would constrain German policy and reduce it to a short-term approach.
“Building coalitions will be increasingly difficult, and governments will find it hard to forge a coherent policy platform,” Mr. Benner said.
Notable SPD figures feared that the renewed alliance would further erode their support among the electorate.
In her over 12 years in power, Ms. Merkel gradually squeezed out the SPD from the policy arena by appropriating traditional center-left ground. She abolished conscription, accelerated a planned nuclear energy phaseout, raised welfare entitlements, adopted a minimum wage and lowered the retirement age—all issues originally championed by the SPD.
Hilde Mattheis, a senior SPD lawmaker who campaigned against the coalition, said the party would have to differentiate itself from the conservatives and tilt to the left in order to win back voters.
“We must learn from our mistakes,” she said. “We need to stop destroying our own profile.”
Some pundits argued that the upcoming succession struggle within the CDU likely to ignite before the next election would weaken the party’s polling and force a tilt to the right, allowing the SPD to regain some ground.

Germans are learning to love Germany again, and Merkel takes note
By Isaac Stanley-Becker, Washington Post, July 21, 2017
BERLIN--If the origins of Germany’s tricolor flag are not widely known, that is because the banner is rarely displayed in a country still atoning for the crimes it carried out in the name of national pride.
There may be a history lesson, then, and not just an electoral gambit, in the prominent use of black, red and gold in posters advertising Chancellor Angela Merkel’s bid for a fourth term in the federal election in September. Germany’s colors have appeared in previous modern political campaigns, but more mutedly--and hardly ever to amplify so blunt an appeal to the national interest.
“For a Germany in which we live well and happily,” proclaims one poster.
Germans’ wary attitude to patriotism and the idea of a national culture is decades old. But circumstances both global and domestic are forcing a reconsideration. As the country decides how it might serve as a custodian of the liberal international order, it is also sorting out how to integrate migrants who began arriving in enormous numbers in 2015. Both undertakings bear crucially on German values--and on the issue of whether a unified set of national principles even exists.
“The question is really, ‘What’s the cement?’?” said Arnd Bauerkämper, a professor of modern European history at the Free University in Berlin. “What should Germans have in common?”
One answer has come from Thomas de Maizière, Germany’s interior minister, who has championed the concept of “Leitkultur,” or leading culture, a term sometimes used as the conservative rejoinder to multiculturalism.
“Strength and internal certainty about one’s own culture leads to tolerance with respect to other cultures,” he wrote this spring in Die Zeit, a weekly newspaper.
The concept makes some on the left uneasy. Efforts to define German culture are “often used to draw a line between us and others,” said Katharina Zimmermann, a 32-year-old who works in marketing in Berlin. She added: “It makes me shiver when I see a German flag.”
In June, Merkel herself took to the pages of Bild, the top-selling German tabloid, to answer the question, “What is German?” She gave a slew of answers, from federalism to Oktoberfest.
Even lawmakers in Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union disagree about whether such things, though widely regarded as national treasures, are grounds for pride.
“I wouldn’t say proud, though I like to be German,” said Thomas Strobl, the party’s chairman in Baden-Württemberg, Germany’s third-largest state. More so, he said, he feels passionately about his region, as well as about Europe as a whole.
Wolfgang Bosbach, another leading conservative lawmaker, had a different answer, noting that Germany was able to overcome “Nazi barbarism” to become one of the world’s most stable democracies. “I am proud of my country, yes,” he said.
The appeal to national feeling by Merkel’s campaign would hardly raise an eyebrow in the United States, or indeed in much of the rest of the world, where love of country is habitual, if not presumed. Flags express that devotion, and they encode history.
But Germany’s flag has a more complicated history than most.
The use of black, red and gold--arranged in horizontal bands--predates the Nazi era. The design emerged in democratic movements for a unified Germany in the mid-19th century and first became the national flag in the short-lived Weimar Republic between the world wars. Discarded by the Nazis in favor of the black-white-red imperial tricolor and the swastika flag, today’s emblem was reintroduced in 1949.
Despite its democratic associations, the flag has long been a source of discomfort, and it has been mostly confined to government buildings or else unfurled at specific moments of national jubilation, such as in 2006 when Germany hosted the World Cup.
Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, director of the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, said attitudes have changed in some spheres.
“I don’t think other nations, or other sports fans, see Germans’ displaying their flag as aggressive; it’s just what everybody else does,” he said. “That wasn’t the case before.”
Merkel’s campaign materials feature “the most prominent display of the color code ever,” said Thomas Strerath, head of the Hamburg-based advertising agency that developed the designs.
Originally intended to fend off a challenge from the far-right Alternative for Germany, the color scheme is intended to appeal to patriotism, not nationalism, Strerath said. In internal papers, the agency settled on the concept of “falling in love again with Germany.”
“Trump had been elected, [Rodrigo] Duterte in the Philippines and [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan in Turkey were tightening their grip,” Strerath said. “We realized that what they have in common is that they don’t come up with the best argument but instead address emotions. If we’re good at something in advertising, we’re good at addressing emotions, and we didn’t want to let the interpretation of what Germany means be the territory of the far right.”
Merkel, who meets with agency executives weekly, thought it was a slam dunk, Strerath said.

The History of German Automobiles
In 1870, when Nikolaus Otto and his companion Karl Benz independently advanced their internal combustion engines, which were 4-stroke on the time, Germany became placed on the map because the birthplace of modern-day autos and the history of German Automobiles had begun. During the latter a part of 1870, Karl Benz started experimenting with their engine layout and somehow ended up attaching it to a sofa. This might all the time be the genesis of modern day modern-day cars. And with the aid of 1901, u. S . A . Of Germany produced roughly 900 automobiles per yr.
Robert A. Brady, an American economist, documented appreciably Germany’s explanation motion which helped to mold their industry’s attention during the Twenties. While Brady’s general theories about this movement have been applicable to Germany’s automobile industry, the Weimar Republic in its later years saw the enterprise in declining fitness. And because of Germany being extraordinarily reticent when trying to broaden its car industry, they opened the floodgates for American vehicle producers like General Motors who sold out German automaker Opel and Ford Motor Company who possessed a completely successful subsidiary in Germany.
However, the German vehicle enterprise tumbled because the world’s economy folded at some point of the overdue Nineteen Twenties and early Nineteen Thirties while the Great Depression raged on. This becomes an unhappy day indeed for the history of German motors. After the Great Depression had subsided, simplest twelve automakers in Germany survived. That small institution blanketed Opel, Fords Cologne manufacturing facility and Daimler-Benz of out of an extraordinary total of 86 automobile groups running earlier than the Depression. Also, four of Germanys pinnacle vehicle manufacturers-Dampf Kraft Wagen, Horch, Audi and Wanderer-came collectively in a joint mission to shape the Auto Union. This Union could play a sizable element to steer Germany again from their issues with the despair.
In 1930, whilst the Nazi Party came to power, a giant change passed off for Germany’s automobile industry and for the records of German automobiles. Motorisierung, a coverage instituted by means of the Nazi Party, was a policy about transportation that Adolf Hitler himself believed to be a key a part of his try to increase his residents living requirements so one can make the Nazi Party seem greater legitimate to them. The Nazis began paintings on toll road schemes even as at the same time project the Volkswagen mission to be able to construct and design the less expensive yet sturdy people’s vehicle.”
As of today, Germany’s automobile industry is one of its top employers, presenting a complete hard work pool of roughly 866,000 employees. Additionally, u. S . Boasts of getting the biggest percentage of vehicle manufacturing in all of Europe with a 29% percentage of the market, next is France with 18%, Spain with thirteen% and ultimately the United Kingdom with a 9% percentage of the marketplace.
There are currently six important German companies which can be dominating the car industry there: BMW, Porsche, VW, Opel (General Motors owns them), Audi (a part of the Volkswagen Group) and Daimler AG. Roughly six million new cars are produced each yr in Germany whilst round 4.Eight million vehicles are produced every year by way of German manufacturers remote places. Along with the pinnacle auto producers Japan and America, the united states of America of Germany is range three at the list of pinnacle auto producers around the world.
One CEO Got Paid 46 Million In A Month – How Is This Possible?
The C.E.O I am talking approximately is Alex Molinaroli. He is the chief government officer of an agency called Johnson Controls. Johnson controls is a fortune 80 business enterprise with kind of 200,000 personnel and roughly 1400 places around the world. He changed into born on October 7, 1959, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He is an alumnus of Northwestern University and the university of south Carolina. He is currently a board member of the Milwaukee college of engineering, interstate batteries and the battery council global.
He received a bachelor in electrical and PC engineering in the early 1980’s and obtained a master of technology in an enterprise in a while. Now which you realize how he received forty-six million bucks in a month, I want to proportion an idea with you proper now. Do you realize that you may make forty-six million bucks a month or more much like Alex Molinaroli? You can do it via operating in your property. This idea of earning income is based totally on you being capable of leverage products offered by way of domestic enterprise opportunities in going back for reimbursement.
However, I have to be sincere with you. If you want to experience a better great of lifestyles like Alex Molinaroli, you must get educated on the sphere of work which you pick to be concerned in. No rely upon what you do, whether or not its begin your home commercial enterprise or project into something else, it is always a good idea to surround yourself with experts or those who you want to achieve success as.
However, In my humble opinion, I consider that the fine way to turn your existence around for the better and make millions of dollars each month is to start a domestic commercial enterprise opportunity. These sorts of profits possibilities offer humans like you and me the risk to promote offerings like net, cable and home safety.
People clearly cannot live without those sorts of offerings. The manner a person gets paid is via promoting this provider and products to the masses and as an end result, obtain a few repayment. The more offerings you sell, the extra earnings you could make and there’s no restriction to how many merchandises you may sell so the bounds are endless.
To make tens of millions of dollars on a monthly foundation, you need to be worried in an opportunity that doesn’t position limits on how plenty money you can make. In addition, the compensation plan needs, to be honest for the vendor as nicely. So ask as many questions as you could earlier than making a decision to be worried about a selected opportunity.
