Week Ten - Class Content

Lecture

This week’s lecture was focused on the Bauhaus. Founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus was an art and design school in Germany that lasted until 1933, when the Nazi party put a stop to it. The school was based on William Morris’ socialist principles, and wanted to explore the role that art and design could play in improving life. The word ‘Bauhaus’ is literally translated to the words build + house. It was located in Weimar from 1919-1928, then moved to Dessau from 1928-1930, and was then moved to Berlin from 1930 until its closure. Over this time period the Bauhaus had 3 main leaders. 

The spirit of the Bauhaus was very progressive and free, rebelling against the socialist norms of the time. The parties, theatrical performances, and challenges to gender identity were considered outrageous by many. The structure of the Bauhaus had students beginning with a 6 month preliminary course, where the goal was to de-learn and relearn - forget traditional academy methods and thoughts on art. Then, students would spend 3 years in the workshops, where they would focus on different materials and skills. The most talented students could go to the building stage and study architecture, or become assistants and teachers themselves. Some famous names who ran the preliminary course were Johannes Itten, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Josef Albers. Each of these teachers bought a different perspective, however that main goals and ideals remained consistent. 

Over the 14 years the Bauhaus was active, they published 14 books about their practice, each focusing on different creatives. Along with this, Herbert Bayer created the universal bayer typeface which was used in many Bauhaus publications. The typeface was all lowercase which was radical at the time. The Bauhaus GmbH was a design agency that ran from 1925-1930 within the Bauhaus. The agency made money to help run the Bauhaus by working on industrial contracts, which helped the school become independent of the state. The key things that I learnt from this lecture was the importance of play and experimentation. Without this process, the final outcome will not be as developed or new. Another important thing is to respect materiality and reduce wastage of materials. 

Landscapes Of Care

The annual convention Creative Exchange entitled Landscapes of Care presented 2021 Future architecture’s program. It was one of the first major events dedicated to the conversation about the New European Bauhaus and the European Green Deal presented by Xavier Troussard, head of the New European Bauhaus at the European Commission’s Joint Research Center.

The core of this year are nine discussions with twenty-seven young artists and experts from various disciplines that responded to this year’s call for ideas, the platform’s tool for encouraging emerging creatives to present their innovative architectural ideas to a wide range of decision-makers and stakeholders, and fifteen curators, directors, and program managers that will carry out the events in the 2021 European Architectural Program. The discussions include topics of public space, landscape, buildings, revisiting histories, transdisciplinarity, paradigm shifts, feminism in architecture, decolonisation, and new policies.

"Should women wear makeup at work" Part 2

To recap from part 1:

- Both men and women use sexual displays at work to feel confident and be likable to others, because attractiveness and sexuality are linked

- Men's status displays communicate wealth, competence, harnessed potential for aggression (strength)

- Men can lower their status with displays of overt sensuality and allusions to sex work

- Women do not have a traditional status display for competence and strength

- Women's displays of wealth traditionally relate to a man's ability to provide for them

In this post I'm going to "blow apart" the third and forth items.

As I said in part one, it's not as though men's status increases proportionally to the sensuality he puts on display. There is certainly a sweet spot.

As JLP says elsewhere in the interview, in reference to situations that don't explicitly have a dress code, that sweet spot is "somewhere between a suit and boxer shorts". That's the essence of women's challenge.

It's worthwhile to look back in history to understand the situation. Men's modern Western clothing derives from basically two sources: military uniforms and sporting clothes. Whenever we see pictures of frilly frock coats from the 18th century, that's just a pimped-out version of a military uniform. The modern button-front shirt with the laid collar is 19th century athletic wear. The polo shirt was basically the same idea but it came later. Sportcoats - the stereotypical one being brown wool tweed with elbow patches - were worn as outdoors-wear for hunting, and they're not extremely dissimilar from the design of a WWI uniform jacket.

Upper class women's clothing was never designed with the concerns of combat and sporting in mind. It was just meant to look a certain way. While corsetry isn't the constricting evil it was made out to be, floor-length skirts and robes that are suspended away from the body get wet, pick up dirt, and become a fire hazard. Silk isn't a very hard-wearing fabric. Lower-class women's clothing has always been more functional, with shorter hems, tougher fabrics that suit the climate, and slimmer or shorter sleeves. The issue of pants was seemingly a religious one. Cross-dressing is forbidden by the Bible, and pants are thought to be immodest because they show the shape of the legs and the space between them. While pants for women are beyond acceptable and not really forbidden, there is still a vestige of skirts being more "appropriate", more formal than pants, and a skirt- or dress-wearing woman to be feminine and more respectable than a pants-wearing woman if one were forced to choose. Pants are fine for most contexts, but women's formal suits and tuxedos, and jumpsuits with the same material and embellishment as a dress, are still very polarizing. There was also an instance a few years ago of a woman being kicked out of a red-carpet event for wearing flat shoes - if I recall correctly, they were Louis Vuitton and were metallic or covered in crystals - instead of heels. They weren't men's shoes, and they couldn't be confused for work boots, but somehow they were considered to be not meeting the standard of the event's dress code.

Again, women have a contradicting set of standards. While practical clothing for hunting, sport, and the military were associated with male prestige, practical clothing for women - flat shoes and pants - continues to read as low-class, or at least lower class than fine fabrics, heels, and skirts. At the same time, there continues to be evidence that a sexualized appearance negatively impacts how others rate a woman's competence.

But, a heavily sexualized appearance also negatively affects men as well...

I haven't seen studies that directly deal with sexualization of men and competence, but there are hints of it in other studies, that show negative perceptions of competence in men wearing tank tops, exposed underwear, beach clothing, skinny jeans, deep-v shirts, too much jewelry, too much hair products, etc. There's a perception of sleaziness in a shirt with too many buttons undone, an animal print suit, or a metallic polyester shirt that looks like something from Night at the Rocksbury. Perhaps this isn't an issue of discrimination against women, but an issue of communication between men's style that shuns the "contributions" of sex work and things adjacent to it, and women's style that integrates - often to naive wearers - styles that come from sex work.

With that in mind, what is the history of makeup? It's complicated.

There's been a constant up-and-down regarding the acceptability of makeup. One century, makeup is normal and even men are wearing it, and the next, it's solely the mark of a whore.

America is a strange case in this respect, because since the first settlers arrived, the history has been almost three centuries of "makeup is for whores". Then, enter the 1920s, when film stars normalized makeup for everyday wear. Then in the 30's and 40's, red lipstick had become patriotic, seeing as Germany and Italy assumed the "makeup is for whores" stance (it's worth noting the Nazis were responding to the explosion of sex work and cinema in the Weimar Republic). In the 60's, a woman could be branded a mentally ill lesbian for not wearing lipstick.

From the 70's onward, designers began taking inspiration from sex work, and now we're in a place where a bra, hotpants, a fur coat, and thigh boots paired with heavily-contoured drag queen makeup is high fashion. In a weird way, though, perhaps there is some truth to the association with female power and the stripperiffic. A corset and high leather boots feel like armor, and ripped fishnets are unfussy and conjure images of tucking a knife in the waist of your cut-off shorts 'cause you can wield it if trouble finds you. Even in fascist countries - especially in fascist countries - men may have married the girl with virginal, white cotton, high-waist panties, and had missionary intercourse with her; but they paid hard-earned money to let their dark side out with the woman in the black lace thong. Getting whipped and stepped on, a freaky dance, or something involving a swing set, for a long time, wasn't normally something men could ask their wives for. Who has often inherited kingdoms more often? The king's wife, who he married to form a political alliance; or the king's courtesan or concubine, who he chose himself? Women channel the prostitute because she has more agency and power than the submissive, virtuous, pious maiden. The prostitute is colorful and exciting. She has better stories and has met more interesting people. She's seen the highs and lows of the human condition. She's ruled men in her own way.

The prostitute exchanges sex for agency and power, but do the men she engages with also see it that way?

Dave Chapelle said, of women dressing in a way evocative of sex work, "If you're not a whore, why are you wearing a whore's uniform?"

Exchanging sex for power in the workplace is quid pro quo sexual misconduct. If you're not exchanging sex, what are you exchanging, then, for power? Probably something like labor, expertise, revenue, technical support, reliability, etc.

Perhaps I just probed and hit bottom here. If I'm building an image of competence for women working alongside men, it doesn't look like sex work. I don't think that's discriminatory toward women, because men are also punished for appropriating the masculine aesthetics of sex work. It's just more difficult for women due to how ingrained the aesthetics of sex work are into mainstream fashion, how ambiguous the standards for "proper dress" are for one situation or another, the lack of history and norms of women in work, and how those make it easier for women to unintentionally slip from expressing themselves and being likably attractive to self-objectification and being too sexualized for the setting.

I suppose the first rule could be: If it's associated with sex work, don't wear it to non-sex work.

It's necessary to clarify: no one deserves or is "asking" to be sexually assaulted or harassed at work based on anything, including what they wear. There seems to be a fine line between saying "be aware of how others could misinterpret the messages you send" and victim blaming. The person making the unwanted sexual advances is the one responsible for their behavior. Acknowledging that the existence of dirtbags is inevitable doesn't excuse their behavior, and acknowledging they have predictable triggers does not absolve them from responsibility for the damage they do to others.

From Berlin with Love

Close by, on the other side of the sprawling Tiergarten Park with its dense cluster of pine trees, sits Berlin’s Hansaviertel. If German’s cool modernism emerged from the Bauhaus in the 20s, then this neighborhood was one of modernism’s climaxes: the housing development was built after World War II in a derelict area, constructed as part of the International Building Exhibition of 1957. Along the leafy, quiet streets are batteries of tower blocks, ribbon buildings, two modernist churches, and a glass library, designed by the period’s most significant architects.

After a morning at Spiekermann’s p98a, it makes sense to visit the Hansalviertel not only to see this plastic clad “city of tomorrow” but to seek out the Buchstabenmusum (called the “Alphabet Museum” in English) situated quietly under the tracks of the over-ground station Bellevue. The first museum in the world to preserve and display letters from public spaces and provide information about their origin and construction, the Alphabet Museum was founded 11 years ago by graphic designer Barbara Dechant, who began collecting after she first rescued from a dumpster a car radio sign reading “A U T O R A D I O”. Hundreds of letters destined for scrap heaps have been salvaged and preserved in a dusty storage unit; there’s neon, metal, and wooden characters in a variety of styles and colors— amidst the letters and dirt, you can construct a story of Berlin and sense a few ghosts.

Back on the U-Bahn, following the many symbols devised by Spiekermann, head to the station Kottbusser Tor, in the Kreuzberg district, for lunch. This bucolic, graffitied neighborhood teems with bars, co-working hubs, dentists, falafel shops, gambling houses, fruit markets, ice cream shacks, as well as concept stores like the stylish fashion destination VooStore, and the chaotic zine shop Motto books, but walking along the area’s wide pavements, you can easily ignore how packed together everything is. From here, head towards Markethalle Neun, a market place or “culinary epicentre” situated under a large, broken roof and crammed with international food vendors advertising their fair on home-made posters and handsomely scribed blackboards. Today’s signs framing another Berlin: Cheese platters & Olives. Veggie Wurst. Craft beer. Kimchi Burgers. Ginger Lemonade. Freshly Baked Ciabatta.

This is a lunch spot for co-workers busying themselves behind the glass windows of storefronts, or trickling out from former factory buildings that have been converted into spacious offices. Spot a group of women who whimsically but provocatively call themselves “Parallel Universe” sat together in the market hall drinking ginger lemonade on a wooden picnic bench: this group of six female illustrators have gathered to swap advice on art directors—who pays on time, who is best to work with—and to collaborate on illustrations for an upcoming Antifa march. Since 2012, Cynthia Kittler, Kiikka Laakso, Kati Szilágyi, Laura Breiling, Ji Hyun Yu, and Barbara Ott have banded together to form this important all-female collective, using their social media platforms to promote and highlight one another’s output. Better together, stronger side by side. Another Berlin in motion, up-to-date, but part of its historic momentum.

Nearby, after sipping organic lemonade and planning with Parallel Universe, the Museum of Things. A small curiosity tucked above an art bookstore on Orienenstrasse, this collection of glass cabinets features simple, everyday but also marvelous things from the past and near present: every blue Nivea jar since the company first began, biscuit tins, plastic at the back of the museum as if it were no big deal at all—an original Frankfurter Kitchen, a milestone in domestic architecture that’s considered the forerunner of the modern fitted kitchen. All of this finds its home in Berlin, where the elsewhere, the other, the uncanny and the new, whether practical or impractical, always belongs.

The Museum of Things will inspire you make your own things, and luckily, there’s a place close by to help you. Towering above a roundabout near the U-Bahn station Moritzplatz sits the great Modular—the ultimate art supply store, artistically stacked with pens, markers, pexiglass, plywood, stationary, pompoms, and anything else that you’ll ever need to make any thing you’ve ever wanted to make, even objects from your dreams. The German designer and illustrator Sarah Illenberger is in Modular today, intently collecting bright colored supplies that she’ll use for her next still-life cover commission for ZEITmagazin. She and her intern pick up yellow paint and blue and pink cardboard, before heading outside to the community garden on the other side of the road, where they cut great leafs from bushes. Illenberger will paint these with geometric patterns and then photograph them against the bright card later today. Yes, signs of another Berlin.

Herbert Bayer born in 1900, the son of a government tax collector, in the small Austrian village of Haag am Hausruck.

Bayer entered into an apprenticeship under the architect and designer Georg Smidthammer, with whom Bayer learned drawing, painting, and architectural drafting, inspired by nature and without formal knowledge of art history. In 1920,  Bayer discovered the theoretical writings of the artist Vassily  Kandinsky, as well as Walter Gropius’ 1919 Bauhaus  manifesto. In it Gropius declared the necessity for a return to  crafts, in which were found true creativity and inspiration.

Bayer traveled to Weimar to meet Gropius in October of 1921  and was immediately accepted into the Bauhaus. There, he  was deeply influenced by the instruction of Kandinsky, Johannes Itten and Paul Klee.

After the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925, Walter Gropius appointed him the director of the newly founded printing and advertising workshop at the Bauhaus Dessau. After leaving the Bauhaus in 1928, Bayer worked as a designer in Berlin until 1938, when pressure from the Nazi government  forced his emigration. 

He settled in New York, and in the same year he designed the exhibition “Bauhaus 1919–1928” for the Museum of Modern Art. 30 years later, the exhibition “50 Jahre Bauhaus (50 years of Bauhaus)” in Stuttgart was also set up according to his design.

Bayer later became the director of the design department at the Container Corporation of America. He worked as a creative consultant for a number of important advertising agencies and department stores.

The vote among just 460,000 SPD members kept the political establishment on tenterhooks for weeks, as the left-leaning party split on whether to enter their third alliance with Ms. Merkel following their worst post-World War II election result last September.

The vote was surprisingly clear, with 66% of SPD members endorsing the coalition in a mail-in ballot, the results of which were unveiled on Sunday.

Ms. Merkel re-election as chancellor by parliament, now a formality, will allow Berlin to turn to pressing foreign policy issues, including engaging in a debate on reforming the European Union launched by French President Emmanuel Macron who wants to overhaul Europe’s common currency, the euro.

“It was a very, very important democratic process for our country and it has re-established the SPD—this is very important for our future…this will give us strength for the process of renewal,” said Olaf Scholz, designated finance minister and acting SPD chairman.

The protracted coalition-building was the longest since the Weimar Republic in the 1930s. Ms. Merkel’s early efforts to forge an alliance with the pro-business Free Democrats and the environmentalist Greens collapsed last November.

Ms. Merkel’s lackluster election victory—her Christian Democratic Union won 32.9%, the worst result since 1949—and the ensuing stalemate have dented the chancellor’s authority in her own camp. While she remains popular with the public, most analysts believe this will be her final term, as the poor election showing has prompted party critics to call for her replacement. No chancellor has served more than four terms.

As a concession to the SPD, the new government will depart somewhat from the German orthodoxy of fiscal restraint. Before the vote, the SPD and Ms. Merkel’s party brokered a coalition agreement outlining some €46 billion ($57 billion) in new spending, mainly on welfare benefits, that are likely to consume most of the budget surplus the federal government was originally expecting to generate during the current parliament.

Ms. Merkel also conceded to the SPD influential, big-budget government posts, including the foreign, finance and labor portfolios, causing anger in her own ranks. The deal also included a pledge to increase Germany’s contribution to the EU budget to make up for the shortfall that will result from Britain leaving the bloc.

The public’s backing for the grand coalition has dropped since January as the talks have dragged on. With the SPD’s ratings now below its election result, most polling institutes give the CDU and SPD less than 50% support among voters.

“No one believes that a new grand coalition will deliver something new or govern better,” said Manfred Güllner, head of Forsa, a leading polling agency. Mr. Güllner said the SPD would continue bleeding votes, some of them to the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany, an anti-immigration and anti-Islam group that went from no presence in parliament to being the largest opposition force, with 12.6% at the election.

The party, known as AfD, capitalized on the backlash from Merkel’s open-door migration policy that has allowed more than one million people to seek asylum in Germany since 2015. The AfD and another new party, the radical Left, have been ruled out as potential coalition partners by all others, making forming a government far more complicated than just a decade ago.

In light of Germany’s political fragmentation, the rebooted grand coalition was the “best Europe could hope for,” said Thorsten Benner, head of Global Public Policy Institute, a left-leaning political think tank. But he warned that the “new normal” of unwieldy multiparty governments based on complicated consensus would constrain German policy and reduce it to a short-term approach.

“Building coalitions will be increasingly difficult, and governments will find it hard to forge a coherent policy platform,” Mr. Benner said.

Notable SPD figures feared that the renewed alliance would further erode their support among the electorate.

In her over 12 years in power, Ms. Merkel gradually squeezed out the SPD from the policy arena by appropriating traditional center-left ground. She abolished conscription, accelerated a planned nuclear energy phaseout, raised welfare entitlements, adopted a minimum wage and lowered the retirement age—all issues originally championed by the SPD.

Hilde Mattheis, a senior SPD lawmaker who campaigned against the coalition, said the party would have to differentiate itself from the conservatives and tilt to the left in order to win back voters.

“We must learn from our mistakes,” she said. “We need to stop destroying our own profile.”

Some pundits argued that the upcoming succession struggle within the CDU likely to ignite before the next election would weaken the party’s polling and force a tilt to the right, allowing the SPD to regain some ground.

The concept makes some on the left uneasy. Efforts to define German culture are “often used to draw a line between us and others,” said Katharina Zimmermann, a 32-year-old who works in marketing in Berlin. She added: “It makes me shiver when I see a German flag.”

In June, Merkel herself took to the pages of Bild, the top-selling German tabloid, to answer the question, “What is German?” She gave a slew of answers, from federalism to Oktoberfest.

Even lawmakers in Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union disagree about whether such things, though widely regarded as national treasures, are grounds for pride.

“I wouldn’t say proud, though I like to be German,” said Thomas Strobl, the party’s chairman in Baden-Württemberg, Germany’s third-largest state. More so, he said, he feels passionately about his region, as well as about Europe as a whole.

Wolfgang Bosbach, another leading conservative lawmaker, had a different answer, noting that Germany was able to overcome “Nazi barbarism” to become one of the world’s most stable democracies. “I am proud of my country, yes,” he said.

The appeal to national feeling by Merkel’s campaign would hardly raise an eyebrow in the United States, or indeed in much of the rest of the world, where love of country is habitual, if not presumed. Flags express that devotion, and they encode history.

But Germany’s flag has a more complicated history than most.

The use of black, red and gold--arranged in horizontal bands--predates the Nazi era. The design emerged in democratic movements for a unified Germany in the mid-19th century and first became the national flag in the short-lived Weimar Republic between the world wars. Discarded by the Nazis in favor of the black-white-red imperial tricolor and the swastika flag, today’s emblem was reintroduced in 1949.

Despite its democratic associations, the flag has long been a source of discomfort, and it has been mostly confined to government buildings or else unfurled at specific moments of national jubilation, such as in 2006 when Germany hosted the World Cup.

Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, director of the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, said attitudes have changed in some spheres.

“I don’t think other nations, or other sports fans, see Germans’ displaying their flag as aggressive; it’s just what everybody else does,” he said. “That wasn’t the case before.”

Merkel’s campaign materials feature “the most prominent display of the color code ever,” said Thomas Strerath, head of the Hamburg-based advertising agency that developed the designs.

Originally intended to fend off a challenge from the far-right Alternative for Germany, the color scheme is intended to appeal to patriotism, not nationalism, Strerath said. In internal papers, the agency settled on the concept of “falling in love again with Germany.”

“Trump had been elected, [Rodrigo] Duterte in the Philippines and [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan in Turkey were tightening their grip,” Strerath said. “We realized that what they have in common is that they don’t come up with the best argument but instead address emotions. If we’re good at something in advertising, we’re good at addressing emotions, and we didn’t want to let the interpretation of what Germany means be the territory of the far right.”

Merkel, who meets with agency executives weekly, thought it was a slam dunk, Strerath said.
