Animation Night 176: The Hedge-Pigge Whin'd
Thrice the brinded Cat hath mewed, Thrice and once the hedge-pig whin'd, Harpier cries, 'tis time! 'tis time! - Macbeth
For the fourth time, Animation Night encounters Halloween. What horrors yet await us? Oh, there are....... many...
Tumblr media
I'm going to keep this writeup pretty short bc (as is probably evident from the Posting lately) I'm not in the best of sorts.
The traditional Animation Night halloween goes something like this: a vampire-related anime, some Yamishibai, and something weird and different. Sometimes that leads to discovering some truly great and unexpected films, like Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (Psiconautas) by Alberto Vasquez. I had been thinking of doing Vasquez's Unicorn Wars tonight, but I decided to hold off to rewatch Birdboy alongside it in a week or two.
Other gems we've encountered have been the Chilean stop-motion film obliquely about a Nazi cult The Wolf House, the 'gekimation' works of Ujicha, the gorgeous one-man adaptation of Suehiro Maruo's ero-guro manga Shoujo Tsubaki, and of course Phil Tippett's 30-year magnum opus Mad God. There's a reason I look forward to Halloween each year.
Animation is a tricky fit for horror stories, particularly traditional animation. The stylised and clearly artificial presentation intrinsic to animation can be distancing and make it hard to make things genuinely scary - so if anything, a lot of horror creators benefit from a deliberately low-fi style, which avoids being too obvious with displays of technique. But animation of all kinds loves horror images and themes, from gory OVAs of the 80s full of rapacious demons, to what you could call 'spoopy' works like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hotel Transylvania and Paranorman which play around with all the Halloween/Hammer Horror imagery - the Draculas and Frankensteins and so on.
Tumblr media
So what's the recipe tonight?
Well, for our vampire anime, we have now worked through the obvious ones, so it's on to... the Darkstalkers OVA from 1997-8, adapting Capcom's series of fighting games. Though in Japan it's called ヴァンパイアハンター THE ANIMATED SERIES (Vampire Hunter: The Animated Series).
Fittingly for a late-90s OVA, this is full of crazy sick animation, notably including a number of cuts by Yoshinori Kanada. The story is basically: two vampire clans are having a war, but then aliens show up. Somehow that leads to battling atop exploding zeppelins. I'm curious.
For our Western Animation slot we have something by Genndy Tartakovsky (Animation Night 35). While Tartakovsky is best known for his 2D animation and hyper-simplified graphical style, he's also directed Hotel Transylvania in 3D. I was rather dismissive of this one at a glance apparently, but I've been told it's good and I mean, it's Tartakovsky right? I'm definitely curious to see how his style crosses dimensions.
Hotel Translyvania was created at Sony Pictures Animation, the studio that would later blow everyones' minds with Spiderverse. Their history is this: Sony, the international media and tech giant, had a visual effects studio called Sony Pictures Imageworks. They were considering selling it, but then came the wave of CG films beginning with Shrek, and suddenly the smell of money was in the air. So Imageworks was retooled into a studio for making feature-length CG movies. Their early films were pretty formulaic, but they gradually began to get more ambitious.
Hotel Transylvania, which depicts a hotel for monsters run by Dracula, has had a rough history, with Tartakovsky actually the sixth director to take on the project. His goal was to try and take the vibe of 2D animation, with its squash and stretch and variable timing, and bring it to 3D - a concept that was perhaps ahead of its time! How did he manage? Let's find out.
For our Yamishibai slot we have Yamishibai.
...ok, for those just joining us this I should probably explain. It's kind of like creepypastas for weebs. Yamishibai is a series of limited-animation shorts in the style of kamishibai paper theatre, telling short horror stories. In the first half of the 20th century, kamishibai performers would go around telling stories with illustrated panels, and the form was influential on the early days of manga. They're usually a blast so we'll definitely see a few of these.
...and, given the late start that will probably be all we have time for, but if we're in the mood, I can pull out a couple shorter animated horror works. Next week, we'll follow it up with Alberto Vasquez, revisiting Birdboy and also checking out Unicorn Wars.
Sound fun? See you at twitch.tv/canmom; we will start the spooky playlist soooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnn...

Part of the joy of writing Sentry is the fact that he is so mid to late 2000's edgy art/theatre kid coded. He is just so freeing to write because even when what he's doing is undeniably dumb or self serving or cringe, it's all part of who he is. Like this guy would unironically be wearing home done snakebites, multiple other piercings, dress like hottopic threw up on him, and say the most out of pocket edgy bullshit. This is a dude who carries around a sketchbook full of edgy OCs and baby's first guro sketches, the 3.5 Book of Vile Darkness, random volumes of Berserk, Hellsing, and assorted Junji Ito Manga, and sit in class posing like Sasuke or Gendo Ikari. Like... I need you to understand, I love Sentry and I think he's endearing and want him to be loved, but he is definitely not a cool protagonist. As Bhaal's chosen he is based on me and so many other people's highschool experience at his core and I love that for him. Also in fairness, I feel like Gortash would kind of have been an edgy weeb in that Era too, so....like...the most annoying emo couple you remember from highschool...

Michael After Midnight: Saki Sanobashi
Tumblr media
[Here is the next entry in my journey across the multiverse (backstory here). This entry is from what I’ve dubbed Earth-4444. In this universe, it seems like I’ve actually spent a lot more time talking about anime than I have in this universe, and I seem to have some level of respect if the jealousy-inducing note count on the posts are any indication. Maybe I chose the wrong field. Anyway, here’s Weeb Michael’s review of something that’s probably not real in our world, but is definitely real in his. The above image was not originally attached to his review, but as it turns out I can’t save photos across dimensions. Very inconvenient.]
Last week I talked about the codifier of animated tentacle porn, The Legend of the Overfiend, a film that actually managed to subvert its own reputation in a lot of ways. It is a film that actually showed the horror of being fucked by tentacles as opposed to using it for mere eroticism. Now, tonight, I’m going to talk about yet another piece of Japanese animation with a rather edgy reputation that precedes it, and yet might be one of the most unique, bizarre, and even startlingly philosophical works to come out of 80s anime.
I am, of course, talking about Saki Sanobashi, or Go for a Punch as it was known when it originally was localized. There’s an interesting story here: This did not come to America through legal means at first, being distributed as a bootleg at conventions for years due to the graphic content making it seemingly unfeasible to get out normally. It wouldn’t be until 2015 when the OVA saw any sort of physical demand, mainly due to fan demand as well as the spreading knowledge that the OVA had influenced many big names in the industry, most notably Hideaki Anno. Because of this, the OVA has been dubbed by many “The Evangelion of Guro,” and in some regards this is not an unfair comparison.
It’s actually fascinating how philosophical this work manages to be. The plot is rather simple, featuring five girls trapped in a bathroom with no obvious means of escape, and from there the five women contemplate their situations, delving into intricate discussions of their place in the universe, the concept of destiny, the cruelty of the world, and even Gnosticism. You can definitely see how this helped inspire Evangelion in certain regards, especially with the use of religious imagery in cryptic ways that may or may not mean anything at all. You can also see how it influenced Silent Hill in some regards, though obviously Jacob’s Ladder still deserves the credit far more.
The animation is horrifyingly well done. It very much resembles the sort of things that Miyazaki was making at the time, so of course this makes it all the more unsettling when you see the girl’s mental states deteriorate to the point where they gruesomely and graphically commit suicide. The level of detail put into the gore is just nauseatingly incredible, and the deaths themselves truly live up to their infamous reputation. Of particular note is one of the girls bashing her head repeatedly against the wall, slamming harder and harder until her head cracks. Even worse, though, is the one girl who tears her own throat out with her bare hands--and yes, we get a lovely closeup. It’s rather telling the tamest death is an assisted drowning.
Not everything is perfect, though. The original dub, the one that landed this work into infamy, is rather low quality, and lends a rather narmy quality to the proceedings. The 2015 redub, which was done with professionals, is much better, and it’s understandable given the circumstances of the original release, but it certainly can be jarring to see such flat line reads punctuated by shit you’d see in Higurashi. It’s also a little bit too short for my liking; at only a little over thirty minutes, it just seems to go by too quickly. While it certainly doesn’t misuse what little it gets, and manages to make you really care for these poor girls in record time, I think this definitely could have benefitted from a little extra runtime. The 2015 release does include an extended cut that’s an hour long that feels so much more fleshed out and even features an unsettling ending that seems to hint at the cyclical nature of time (something discussed at length in one of the more poignant added scenes), but if we’re talking about the original, infamous iteration of the anime, it’s a victim of its own runtime.
Overall, I’d say this is one of the more interesting pieces of animation to come out of the 1980s. I certainly wouldn’t call it one of the greatest of all time, but it certainly managed to leave an incredible mark on the anime industry. It’s honestly hard to imagine what it would look like without this OVA, honestly; it’s a niche, underground production that managed to rise to lofty heights due to fan demand and the influence of bigger artists, so it certainly did something right. Definitely check it out if you’re big into anime history like me, or if you’re really into gory stuff. You definitely won’t be disappointed in that case. Frankly, even if it’s not my favorite work by any means, I find it really hard to imagine an anime landscape that looks as good as it does without this work’s shockingly wide influence.

You mean to tell me Netorare is just cuckolding? Weebs were brining up the word like it was some form of ultra-hardcore guro.
I mean, most normal people hate the concept of cuckholding, so it’s understandable it’s seen that way.

One of these days I’ll bite the bullet and catch the posts over here up with the ones on twitter. But not today, because here’s four more OCs for the 100 OC challenge! Redraws up top, earliest images at bottom, and detailed character info below the cut!
#37: Piro Idea: Peppy high schooler who accidentally starts the apocalypse with pals Story: Death Guard
The first of the trio of unfortunate kids. Piro is your average modern high school junior; she's a weeb, she hangs out with her equally weeby friends, Lulu and Alice, and she dabbles in witchcraft for funsies. One night, when dicking around with spirit boards and playing "stiff as a board, light as a feather" didn't quite hit the same, Piro cooked up a plan. See, she'd recently bought a book that detailed various rituals for not only contacting spirits from the beyond, but actually raising them from the dead. Wouldn't it be fun to go to a graveyard and try it out? After all, it's not like it would actually work, right?
Unfortunately for her and her friends, it very much worked. As it turned out, all three of them had actual latent magical powers, they just hadn't been performing the right rituals to channel them. And now, not only had the three of them managed to summon two very upset zombies, Remi (her own ancestor, no less) and Dev, but they had also apparently torn a rift between the worlds of the living and dead by performing magic no human should be capable of and all sorts of ghosts, demons, and other nasty creatures were now coming to eat one or all of them.
While the angel Seraph had intended only for Remi and Dev to fight, Piro wasn't just going to cower away when she knew she had magic at her disposal. She might not have had Remi and Dev's technical immortality, but she was going to fight back nevertheless. Thus, she practiced her magic as much as she could (with the unfortunate side effect that such efforts would draw monsters to her even more frequently).
She found it was easier to channel her powers if she had a specific focus item. So, she turned to her other particular hobby: yo-yo tricks. She bought a pair of oversized yo-yos and weaponized them, learning to fling spells with each flick of the wrist. While Piro thought it was more than fair that she take in Remi and Dev, since it was her fault that they were alive again in the first place, in time she comes to push back against Remi's incessant negative attitude and poor treatment of her. Over time, Piro's upbeat nature and willingness to take responsibility, even for something she had no way of knowing was possible, breaks through to Remi, and she comes to genuinely care for her descendant.
#38: Lulu Idea: Goth Lolita witch Story: Death Guard
The second of our intrepid group of accidental necromancers. Lulu is your average snarky Goth kid who mistakes being cynical for being cool. She spends most of the money she earns working at her parents' cosplay cafe on an extensive Gothic Lolita wardrobe (she's particularly fond of aristocrat, military, ero, and guro styles). Like many Goth Girls™️, she had been playing at being a witch for a few years, collecting crystals, practicing tarot, and writing hexes to curse the kids at school who called her weird, as you do. But it wasn't until Piro found the necromantic grimoire that she discovered she actually had magic powers. Unfortunately, she couldn't immediately put these newfound powers to use actually cursing her schoolmates, because she now had to contend with the demonic forces that wanted to eat her and claim her power for their own.
Lulu wasn't as keen as Piro on directly getting in on the demon-slaying action, though she did fashion herself a magical spear for self-defense. Instead, she borrowed Piro's grimoire and began to study the rituals it contained more thoroughly - with some consultation from Seraph as to what spells she could actually practice and what would make the rift situation worse, of course. Over time, she becomes proficient in both wards and curses.
She also ends up developing a bit of a crush on Dev when he starts working at the cafe. As you can imagine thanks to the incompatible orientations, it doesn’t work out for her.
#39: Alice Idea: Quiet shy girl who's also the most powerful witch. Also a Horseman of the Apocalypse. Story: Death Guard
The third member of our wacky witchy gang, and overall the least developed out of them. She's every bit the typical shy girl she looks, with her giant glasses and her penchant for sweater dresses and leggings. Only, as it turns out, she's actually the most naturally gifted witch of the three, able to easily conjure elemental magics without the use of a focusing weapon like Piro or Lulu.
This may or may not be related to the fact that she's harboring the Pale Rider of Death within her.
How did she wind up the host for one of the Four Horsemen? Is she a reincarnation? Is it just hitching a ride in her body until the horns are sounded and it's time to roll? Well, I don't honestly remember and if I wrote it down anywhere, I don't have it. All I know is that once the Deadly Sins were defeated, the next big enemies would be the Four Horsemen, and Alice would become Death, and our heroes would have to find a way to get their friend back.
#40: Seraph fka Belial Idea: The Personification of Lust saved by the power of love. Story: Death Guard
So you might not've noticed, but in a few of the previous descriptions, I mentioned the Deadly Sins. If you did notice, you might've wondered, "Why not Seven Deadly Sins?"
Because there's only six. One of them went AWOL.
Seraph, the fabulous angel with the goofy hair ribbons and the penchant for wearing blazers without shirts underneath, was once upon a time Belial, Lord of Lust and one of the seven kings of Hell (alongside Lucifer of Pride; Mammon of Greed; Leviathan of Envy; Beelzebub of Gluttony; Satan of Wrath; and Belphegor of Sloth). He had a great many cults dedicated to him, and sent his followers out in search of the truest, purest, most dedicated lovers they could find. They would offer a lifetime pleasure and happiness to one, all for the cost of the life of the other. With the lover's sacrifice, Belial would be called into the world to fulfill his oath. What his victims didn't realize, however, was that their lifetime had now been cut down to a single day; he would give them all the pleasure their body could take until they could finally take no more and died. Belial would then drag their soul to his corner of Hell for an eternity of indescribable pain.
Things were going pretty well...until Dev came along.
Somehow, something about Dev was just too pure for Belial to handle, and for the first time, he actually felt genuine guilt over what he was doing. He felt so guilty, in fact, that rather than fulfilling the desires of Dev's lover who had summoned him, he instead immediately damned the man.
Thereafter, he got in touch with God and repented his very existence, begging for salvation. God relented and offered Belial a vanishingly rare opportunity: join the forces of Heaven, serve faithfully for a millennia, and be reborn as a full and true seraph. Belial decided this was more than fair, and abandoned his kingdom in Hell, taking Seraph as his new name to help keep his goal always within view.
Well, this caused a bit of a ruckus in Hell, and for the past however many centuries, there's been a war among the subordinates and the damned he left behind for the position of Lord of Lust.
When Dev happens to rise again, Seraph doesn't want the man to immediately recognize him as the indirect cause of his death, so he has the brilliant idea to cover up his right eye and the noticeable heart shaped brand around it with a medical eyepatch. Of course, he'll have to reckon with that whole deal eventually, especially once his former siblings manage to work their way through the rift between worlds...
BTW if you're wondering why he’s Belial and not Asmodeus, it's because in 2008, the wiki page for the hierarchy of demons that I used said Belial was prince of lust and not Asmodeus and I'm not changing it now.

15 years ago I was friends with an artist from g____chan who specialized in these guro paper dolls (paperchildren for new or non-weebs). I think most of them are still on DA, but the ones that didn’t make it over (the especially nsfw ones) are probably lost to time.  Maybe I should commemorate him by making my own paperchild.
