Is Crowley already the new Supreme Archangel?
A few oversights made millennia ago, and suddenly we have a demon archangel on our hands.
Caution: I came up with and wrote this in the last few hours so potentially crackpot theory ahead. Apologies if this has been proposed before, it’s not one I’ve seen. And I’ve seen A LOT.
Tumblr media
So supposedly the miracle Aziraphale and Crowley performed together was something only the mightiest of archangels could have done. Everyone assumes it was Crowley because they think he was a high ranking Angel formerly. Or that it was the two of them together. Or that Jimbriel amplified it. But what if…
“There is always a supreme archangel”
Michael says this in S2E1 when talking with Uriel about who is in charge now that Gabriel was missing. Gabriel was removed from office in the trial we hear, he’s no longer Supreme Archangel. If so, Michael’s statement would imply that as soon as Gabriel’s removal happened, a new archangel already existed. Now obviously the Metatron is making a show of choosing Aziraphale as the new Supreme Archangel. But is that within his power to do so? Or is he suggesting working with Crowley for a different reason, possibly unknown even to him?
“I am the only first-order archangel in the room, or you know, the universe”
During the “2nd Armageddon-that-wasn’t” discussion, Gabriel says these words. As he says them, it cuts (ominously isn’t the right word here, pointedly maybe?) to Crowley leaning against the desk, and lingers there just a bit too long.
Tumblr media
“How do you know it wasn’t me?”
Another clue to the powerful angel Crowley was. It was clearly said in a teasing manner throw Shax off. But much like the barrel of red herring in the intro, is it a red herring to something else?
“Can you send lightning bolts and get them to report back to you?”
The only other time we see someone calling lightning or using it is, you guessed it: Gabriel in S1 on the airbase to port in and out. I’ve read the theory that Angel!Crowley was the lord of lightning, which I’m not opposed to, but to me this is another link.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
“Never change their passwords”
We have one HUGE instance of Heaven being sloppy in their record keeping (passwords), and lax in their security protocol (Crowley bopping about with Muriel). Whereas Hell is meticulous in their record keeping, as shown by the bills, admissions process, and S1 contract.
So what if: when Gabriel was stripped of the title, a new Supreme Archangel was automatically appointed. Except instead of someone else, because heaven neglected to double-check their logs after The Fall, Crowley was still on the books as next in line? This would absolutely play into “God playing games with the universe” and “just think what would have happened if we’d been at all competent” themes running through both seasons. It would also follow the theory that people noticed Aziraphale and Crowley were on the “wrong” side for much of the season. It would also explain a few continuity errors along the way (how did Crowley know Muriel’s rank? He knows it through the knowledge automatically given to the Supreme Archangel).
“Funny ol’ world, isn’t it?”
Caveats and potential weaknesses:
I have no idea how this fits into the fact that S3 will be the actual continuation the Neil and Terry planned, as to my knowledge S2 was essentially a “Neil’s chaotic angsty ineffable husbands fanfic”. But clearly S2 has to play well into the plan for S3. I also kind of hate my theory because Crowley specifically declined to be an angel again, and his hand has been forced too often already.
Now I am a staunch advocate of the body-swap theory, and I’m not sure how this would play into that. Does Metatron know? Does he think he has the power to appoint? Does he think the title went to Aziraphale because of the miracle? Does he try to get Crowley to come back with Aziraphale to exploit his power? Does he know about the body swap in S1 and if so, was he trying to trigger another one to get the right “soul” to heaven?
There are a few other things I haven’t figured out how to incorporate into this post yet. I’ll try to put them into coherent thoughts in the next few days, but thought I’d throw this to the wolves universe for the time being.
Thought 1: “How have your lot managed to stay in charge all this time?” “I’m not so sure we have.”
Thought 2: I need to do (another) rewatch before I nail this one down (such a sacrifice I tell you), but does Crowley have a visceral reaction like he does in S1 to being called “good” in the current, post Gabriel-removal timeset? Obv in Edinburgh/Job, but that’s in the past. He denies it, sure (with Jim), but he straight up flashes a smile and thanks Mrs. Sandwich when she says “You’re a good lad” (after the denial).
2.1: No one calls him “good” in present day except these two instances. Vast difference in the visceral reactions of season 1 and flashbacks.
Thought 3: Crowley is the only one who can trigger Jimbriel’s recall memory.

What does Aziraphale know and when does he know it? Part 4: The Aftermath
Prologue, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, for those who need them.
After Crowley strides out, Aziraphale has a lot going on in his head still, and it shows on his poor devastated angry (he is angry, just a bit) face.
Then the Metatron comes back in, and Zira has to turn sharply away to pull himself back into some kind of kayfabe. "How did he take it?" the Metatron asks cheerfully, despite already knowing because he was watching. Jehoshaphat, y'all, I thought s1!Gabriel was punchable -- I want to drop the Metatron into Earth-core magma like Gollum at this point!
Aziraphale's heroic efforts at kayfabe are pretty successful, on the whole, but it hurts to see him stiff as a board, arms at his sides, letting the Metatron (argh, so punchable) insult Crowley and laughing nervously. Then the Metatron starts forcing him out the door again with "Right, ready to start?" The presumptuous wretch doesn't even wait for a yes -- just assumes it!
Aziraphale, however, knows he never said yes, so he tries playing for -- anything, really, more information or some kind of choice (arc word! arc! word!) or anything at all. No dice; the Metatron highhandedly gives his bookshop (his. BOOK. SHOP.) to Muriel. Aziraphale now knows why the Metatron wanted Muriel to stay behind on Earth, and he also knows that the Metatron will stop at nothing and trample anyone to get what he wants. Not comforting knowledge, that.
And Aziraphale, having essentially no more choice (I repeat: arc word!), but still horribly torn because he never got to make a decision about the job offer, still doesn't have a Metatron-thwarting plan, and wants Crowley with all his mind and heart, blurts "I think I --" Then he drops back into kayfabe, following the extremely punchable Metatron out the door.
Crowley's still there, standing by the Bentley. All our hearts shatter. But the extremely punchable Metatron (have I mentioned that he is extremely punchable?) keeps Aziraphale moving along by dropping hints at answers to his continuing questions: whatever the Metatron's up to, it's something to do with the Great Plan.
Aziraphale asks. And now that he's firmly in the Metatron's clutches, the Metatron answers: it's the Second Coming.
Watch Aziraphale drop kayfabe (fortunately, the Metatron isn't looking at him) for a look of helpless dismay. A.Z. "entire collection of Bibles, wicked and otherwise" Fell knows what that means! Watch him re-establish kayfabe when the Metatron looks at him from the elevator. Watch him turn back toward Crowley to tell him (unnecessary -- Crowley knows from his visit Upstairs -- but Aziraphale doesn't know Crowley knows), then decide (with another of those pulling-himself-together deep breaths) that he must instead play along. Watch him kayfabe-smile at the Metatron and enter the elevator.
And watch kayfabe warring with devastation and guardianly determination in Aziraphale's face over the credits. My read -- you may have a different one -- is that determination wins, and the eventual smile is an "okay, now I have a plan" smile.
Watch out, Metatron. Aziraphale's gonna wreck you and I'm gonna enjoy it.
-------------------------------------------
This interpretation of the Final Fifteen Minutes is parsimonious. It works with what's there onscreen, not assuming much beyond that -- the only Caveat About Offscreen Shenanigans I left in was to note that we don't necessarily see the entire chinwag. Exactly zero of the twistier, more elaborate fan theories, you may have noticed, made it into this meta -- heck, we don't even have to assume we didn't see the entire chinwag! We might have! What we did see was enough to lead to these outcomes!
The Gaiman-Pratchett-Finnemore brain trust likes jigsaw-puzzle plots where everything has its place and little or nothing is wasted. That's a big reason I think a parsimonious interpretation is likely to be close to a true interpretation. It's all there; why get wild if there's no need to?
This also aligns with what Michael Sheen has said (do please read this not-mine meta, it's lovely) about angels and goodness and making choices. I, too, want Aziraphale to have made the hard, hurting, noble choice at last, even if he was partly railroaded into it.
(Anyone who doesn't care for fan theories should stop reading now, with my effusive gratitude for making it this far.)
That said, the explosion of fan theories about the Final Fifteen Minutes also demonstrates that this interpretation is narratively accommodating. It doesn't have to assume poisoned or drugged coffee, but it doesn't preclude that. It doesn't require a body swap, but it allows it -- all that really has to change is the estimation of who's doing how much kayfabe when. It doesn't need some massive season-spanning conspiracy arc, but if there is one, it can make that work.
Neil knows fandom, none better. He knows we love our meta and our theories. So I have no trouble believing he wrote us a narratively accommodating finale so we could get our book-length Tumblr posts on. Appreciate it, and you, Neil.

Resurrection and The Second Coming
There is a recurring motif in season 2, and that is the image of resurrection and being raised from the dead. I think this all points to what will happen in season 3 and tie into the Second Coming plot that was mentioned by Metatron. I’m not sure what exactly it’s indicating, obviously, but here are the clues:
Tumblr media
1) 25 Lazuri miracle
I enjoyed the reference to Lazarus, and I found it quite striking! It IS interesting, isn’t it Crowley, that Heaven measure miracles by how many times it could have brought someone back from the dead?
And isn’t it interesting that Aziraphale and Crowley, combined, could bring back 25 human lives with a single, half-arsed miracle?
I’m getting the impression that bringing people back to life and the power to resurrect is going to be a bigggggg deal in the future plot.
Tumblr media
2) The opening credits
The opening credits have been said to hold a few clues for season 3. One of the things I've noticed is that there’s plenty of apocalypse and hell imagery, none of which we see in season 2. For example, above, we see A and C moving underground, like they’re navigating some route to the underworld. Then we see them leading a growing crowd of people through a very traditional portrayal of hell, with fire and giant spiders etc., through the blitz, through a SPACE (?) and a very modern perspective of the apocalypse, with scrapheaps and riots.
There’s a LOT to unpack in that, but what I want to focus on here is the concept of the afterlife. We’re presented with an almost Dante-esque, Ancient Greek view of Hell: A and C are walking through dim tunnels to a fiery, wretched view of the underworld. Where is this??? In the show, I mean??? We’ve never seen this version of hell. as far as we know, it has always been the bureaucratic landscape that we’ve seen in S1 and S2. We can assume it’s always looked like this because Heaven has always had the office-style setting since even Job’s time.
So what are we seeing here? A and C leading people to Hell? Then... walking out of it!? It is very reminiscent of the ancient myths of Greek heroes attempting to bring the souls of their loved ones back to Earth.
And, notably, we do not see either of them walk through heaven in the opening credits.
Who are they leading through this opening credits scene and why?
Tumblr media
3) Give me Coffee or Give me Death
I don’t actually have a lot to say about this other than there was a lot of emphasis on the name of the shop. Possibly just because it’s a fuckin’ cool name for a cafe... but even Metatron makes a pointed remark about it.
Call me a tin-hat bitch, but I actually have a feeling that Nina, who is sooooo hyperaware of all the bizarre events going on around her-- to the point that she’s lucid at Aziraphale’s party-- is an angel. I think she was removed from the Book of Life, so no one knows she ever existed as an angel. She seems to have some connection with the supernatural, with Sight, and perhaps, given the name of her shop, the afterlife.
Tumblr media
4) The Resurrectionist and Mr Dalrymple
The whole minisode of The Resurrectionist was bizarre-- I really enjoyed it, but it does make 100% sense that it’s referred to as a minisode. Because it feels oddly separate from the plot (until of course we find out the connection with Beelzebub and Gabriel). Even then, though, it’s a little jarring.
WHY this particular flashback in history?
And WHY do B and G meet there in the first place? Out of all the places for them to meet in the universe?
This is another rather heavyhanded hint towards the concept of resurrection and being raised from the dead. Mr Dalrymple, ethics aside, is using the dead to bring life to others. He’s giving the dead a new lease on life.
And, listen, I’m a fan of the classics, so the connections to Shelley’s Frankenstein is VERY blatant-- bringing in the question of morality and playing god and the creation of life and modern prometheus and responsibility and resurrection etc. AND Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. (The latter especially in the sense that Stevenson was a doctor from Edinburgh.)
I just think the minisode is another example of a thread left untied in season 2.
Tumblr media
5) Gabriel’s prophecy
“I remember when the morning stars sang together and all the angels of god shouted for joy.” (A reference to Job, see below)
“There will come a tempest and darkness and great storms. And the dead will leave their graves and walk the earth once more. And there will be great lamentations. Everyday is getting closer.”
I mean, what else is there to say here? This is explicitly a prophecy about what will happen later in the story-- the dead returning and walking the earth. This HAS to be a reference to the Second Coming, which I talk about more in point 9.
What if this is hinting at a giant rehaul of heaven and hell? The living and the dead facing true judgement?
Tumblr media
6) Zombies in the blitz
Have any of you noticed that we’ve seen plenty of Heaven and Hell, but the only time we’ve ever seen any signs of human beings in said afterlife is with the Nazis? It only occurred to me while piecing this post together, but we’ve never seen anyone in heaven aside from angels. No saints, no good people who went to the good place. In hell we’ve seen lots of shuffling people, but honestly I’ve always thought they were demons. Now, we’re seeing the check-in process in Hell, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but... it’s just occurred to me that it’s the only time we’ve explicitly seen any human afterlife in hell rather than just demons.
What does it mean? Not sure. Perhaps it’s hinting at what will occur in season 3. Perhaps it’s suggesting that there is a major fault in how heaven and hell actually organise human afterlife. Maybe the system is broken beyond the institutional abuse we’ve seen among the angels and demons...
ANYWAY.
Zombies are undead. Life resurrected. Lazarus kinda. Right? Obvious connection. But what *is* interesting is that these Nazis specifically were resurrected as a part of the plot to survey A and C. Out of all the people to bring to life... they are a pretty depressing and unsettling choice. Even if they’re like, comedically terrible/evil. Eek.
Lazarus, after all, was supposed to be a good guy. (I think. Jesus brought him back to life after all.)
Tumblr media
7) Job’s children
The various versions of this story I’ve looked at have been fantastically vague about what Job heard and what happened to him at the end-- which is, I gather, the whole point. The message appears to be about having faith in God. It’s a test of faith and love for the Almighty.
But like, even the idea of the children being returned to life is vague. In some versions it looks like he gets his original kids back plus more, in others, it’s not specified. In this version, we see Crowley’s kindness in saving them in the form of metamorphosis (at least temporarily). Job’s children aren’t brought back to life as such, then, but they are returned to Job. In a way, the whole of this series is bringing stories back to life by retelling them on the screen. (Stop it, I know it’s a stretch...)
Tumblr media
8) Magic tricks
Ok, so the most famous magic tricks in the book are the idea of DEATH EVADING ESCAPADES! Such as sawing a body in half. Or, in Aziraphale’s case, the bullet catch.
I dunno where I'm going with this, but it feels relevant. Especially given that there’s the whole scare of ‘oh no we can’t use miracles! I could be discorporated! Then there’s all the paperwork... for RESURRECTION...’
Tumblr media
9) The Second Coming
So, I am not all too familiar with the Second Coming. It appears across various religions and interpretations of the scripture.
My understanding of it is LIMITED even after research, so I would appreciate others chipping in if they can clarify for me and for others.
- It involves Jesus returning to Earth (often during a time of war and destruction among humans, though not in every religion).
- Jesus’ second coming to Earth will trigger Judgement Day. The living and the dead will be judged on whether they go to heaven or to hell.
- Some Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the second coming of Jesus occurs after Armageddon and brings the ‘conclusion of the system of things’. A giant rehaul, I think.
- For Catholics, the second coming will cause ‘the fullness of the reign of God and the consummation of the universe and mankind.’ What this essentially means is that mankind and the universe get to share in Jesus’ resurrection, so the dead will walk again. Just as God manifested himself through Jesus once, now, God will appear through the whole of mankind and the universe. Personally, I've always appreciated this interpretation of God-- that the Holy Spirit is everywhere and in everything, rather than a person in the sky.
- Catholics also believe that “at the moment of Jesus' arrival, three events will happen all at once in an instant, in the blink of an eye: the living will die, the universe will be transfigured, and the dead will be resurrected, judged, and recompensed. After this single instant or moment, the church does not know what will happen for the rest of eternity - only that the damned will continue to be in hell and the saved will continue to experience the beatific vision.” (thank you Wikipedia)
- Most religions see it is as the final true judgement of God over mankind.
Conclusions
I don’t know what it all means, but I think it all boils down to the Second Coming, the final judgement, and perhaps a big reshuffle of heaven and hell.
In my opinion, Heaven and Hell as we know it in the show will be completely deconstructed and reconstructed. I think perhaps Metatron has been the ‘man behind the curtain’, an imposter meddling with mankind, their prophecies, and even the Book of Life.
Perhaps, all of these little hints are an example of Metatron’s ‘Second Coming’ plan bleeding through whatever reality we’re in.

Metatron's manipulation step by step
Part 5: The offer ("canonical" version)
Part 1 - where I discuss the significance of the coffee.
Part 2 - where I take a look back at season 1
Part 3 - from Metatron's arrival on Earth to sending the Archangels away
Part 4 - inside the bookshop after sending the Archangels away
The time has finally come for the "main event". For the conversation between Metatron and Aziraphale where the former makes his offer and convinces the latter to take it*.
Obviously, the first thing I feel I need to do is to acknowledge that this scene/sequence is far less credible than the ones I've discussed previously. We aren't shown the entire conversation from the beginning to the end so there's no knowing what else was said that we aren't privy to. In addition, we only know it as told by Aziraphale and Aziraphale has been known to tell lies. So it's not impossible that even the fragments we see aren't relayed accurately.
And the second thing I feel I need to do is to ignore all of the above.
I do believe there was more to Metatron's offer than what we were allowed to see. But in this post, I'd like to only focus on what we were shown. Let's temporarily assume we have all the key pieces. That what we were shown was indeed how Aziraphale was won*.
The scene starts with Aziraphale's narration "He said that Gabriel obviously hadn't worked out as Supreme Archangel and Commander of the Heavenly Host" and in my humble opinion this opening statement is more than enough proof that Metatron goes hard and plays dirty.
Because, you know, Gabriel. What a hornets' nest that is...
Aziraphale's relationship with Gabriel is messy and complicated and I'll heroically resist temptation to get sidetracked by the topic here.
The gist of it is that the former Supreme Archangel simultaneously does and doesn't represent Heaven for Aziraphale. He does because that was literally his part - he used to be Aziraphale's superior, Aziraphale has been permanently stationed on Earth, so pretty much all of Aziraphale's interactions with Heaven were actually interactions with Gabriel. He doesn't because Aziraphale has a very idealistic idea of what Heaven is and Gabriel fails to live up to that ideal.
When Metatron says putting Gabriel in charge of Heaven turned out to be a bad idea, it's a very subtle misdirection. He is tapping into Gabriel is not Heaven sentiment, and pulls Aziraphale's focus to Gabriel's failure and away from what exactly made him one.
Metatron takes advantage of two things here. The first one is that deep down Aziraphale has always felt Gabriel was the wrong person for the job. We're talking 6000 years worth of decisions and actions contradicting Aziraphale's convictions and ideals here. Those feelings are STRONG.
The second thing is that Aziraphale doesn't really know what happened. He was aware Gabriel was in trouble and had just found out he was in love with Beelzebub. And that's literally it. He has no idea Gabriel had vetoed Armageddon the Sequel and that's the real reason Heaven was out for his blood.
When Aziraphale hears that "Gabriel obviously hadn't worked out" I imagine his visceral reaction is "finally, they've realized he's no good!". And Metatron primed him for leaning into that reaction by the way he handled Michael earlier (see: Part 3). He has sent a clear message that when Archangels act inappropriately it is eventually recognised as such.
And even if Aziraphale consciously knows that Gabriel's incompetence might not be Heaven's reason, there is a romance with the Fallen as a plausible explanation. He has no incentive to examine it any closer.
Let me just say it out loud: Metatron tries to demonstrate that Aziraphale's sense of right and good aligns with Heaven because has finally dismissed an Archangel whose decisions Aziraphale could never agree with. But he conveniently hides the fact that Heaven dismissed Gabriel because, for the first time in his existence, he made a decision Aziraphale would fully agree with.
I hate Metatron.
Let's move on with the scene.
"and he asked who I thought should take over in Heaven now that Gabriel was gone."
Aziraphale canonically has standards but in this particular instance, his standards are so low it's heartbreaking. He's clearly floored by the fact that he was asked for an opinion. I don't think I need to comment on that any further.
Interestingly, it's just being asked, not the topic itself, as Aziraphale's answer sounds rather disinterested to me.
He suggests Michael, who seems to be next in the chain of command after Gabriel, and I think to some extent he's playing safe, but mostly he genuinely has no idea. We'll get back to it in a moment.
Metatron dismisses this option vehemently - "Oh, don't be silly! No, no, no, no, no!" - because of course he does. He had just scolded her like a misbehaving child. He needs to act as if putting Michael in charge is a ridiculous idea to further confirm his criteria are similar to Aziraphale's. That they are on the same page about what Heaven is and what would be good for Heaven to be what it was always meant to be.
And then Metatron finally goes for it: "There's only one candidate who makes even the slightest bit of sense. And that's you".
Telling someone they're the only one to perform a certain task that is objectively perceived as necessary and desirable is probably manipulation 101. Actually, you don't even need a task like this, just telling someone they're the only one can make them special and appreciated enough to be willing to accept.
Additionally, Aziraphale knows he's different from other angels, an anomaly of sorts. This awareness on the one hand lends credibility to Metatron's argument - if they need someone like Aziraphale, he really is the only option, because no other angel is remotely similar to Aziraphale - and on the other hand validates his otherness.
In case you haven't noticed, Aziraphale is starved for validation.
Metatron knows what he's doing, showering him with compliments: "You're a leader, you're honest, you don't just tell people what they want to hear. It's why Gabriel came to you in the first place, I imagine. There are huge plans afoot, enormous projects, and I will need you to run them. You are just the angel for the job."
They're not even particularly accurate at this point. I mean, I adore Aziraphale but I think you'd agree with me that if you lined up everyone in the whole world and asked them to describe Aziraphale, nobody at all would say "leader".
The part about Gabriel is a particular BS I've already written about.
But while all those things had an effect on Aziraphale, it's very important to stress that they did not make him take the offer. It wasn't the promise that Heaven actually cared for him and valued him. That Heaven needed him. It wasn't the opportunity to lead Heaven and to fix it.
Aziraphale's answer to all of the above was:
"I don't want to go back to Heaven. Where would I get my coffee?"
So Metatron immediately changes strategy. Dangles another prize in front of Aziraphale.
"You know, as Supreme Archangel, you would be able to decide who to work with. (...) it would certainly be within your jurisdiction to restore your friend, Crowley, to full angelic status."
This is what tempted Aziraphale to agree*
*Except we don't actually know if that is what happened and I will discuss it further in the next part.

I've seen people mention that Crowley and Aziraphale might be swapped at the very end, but I really think they were swapped for the entire final 15, it doesn't really change anything other than the context under which the conversation is happening, but it makes more sense. They're a lot of little things that I'll list below but I'll put the three biggest things at top
Tartan collar: they are wearing the outfits they wear when switching in S1 and "Crowley" appears to have on The tartan collar ( This can be seen by pausing S2E6 at 36:27 it is red earlier in the same episode at as well as in the prior episode the first picture where it's red is when he was coming back from taking Nina and Maggie to the coffee shop)(you have to pause it as Aziraphale and the Metron are leaving the shop to be able to see it is not red)
Crowley gives away a book which we've established he would not do, but Aziraphale has in this season.
Crowley mentions a conversation that happened between Aziraphale and Maggie, not Crowley.
This is everything:
After seeing the metatron talk to Nina we come in to the middle of conversation showing we have missed something.
Azira seems stoic while being threatened (How Crowley portrays him when switched)
Crowley stops walking like Crowley after they (Met and Azi) leave ( He takes a few steps then starts to walk with less sway) then sees Muriel and is startled. (Becuase he was caught out of character?)
Crowley More sarcastic/unnecessarily cruel with Muriel (See swap in S1 Aziraphale plays Crowley as more sarcastic)
Crowley gives away a book (established earlier in season he would not however Azira gives away a Doctor Who Annual and allows Maggie and Nina to throw encyclapidias)
Gives Muriel the crow road. They said they want a book because books are like people but portable, He gave her a book about life, love, death and being human. And says "here you'll like this one" which comes off as a snarky remark (Or is this Azira breaking character to give a book recommendation because he just can't help himself?)
Crowley mentions seeing Maggie crying (only Azira saw this, and when he told Crowley the reason for helping her he did not mention it)
He says he was meddling because Nina needing saving the audience assumes they mean from her relationship but the ineffable idiots never found out about her relationship they would be talking about saving her from demons but that occured at the ball (Crowley tried to get them together before that so it doesn't make sense to say that's when he started meddling, but the ball is when Aziraphale started meddling)
Azira's voice in a higher register during scene (Azira's voice goes lower usually when upset or making a point (correcting Furfur, quieting fighting demons/angels, telling Shax they can't come in) Crowley's normally goes higher)
Azira has spent this season reflecting on the cruelty of heaven and his feelings for Crowley (sudden change from the rest of season does not have narrative flow)
Crowley has spent the season focused on protecting/saving
Opposite sides (through the season as they have changed focus the sides (Crowley on the left Azira on the right) have changed but now they are changed back. It seems normal but is still a juxtaposition from what we have seen in the season) IE in this season the person on the left is the one who wants their needs over the needs of humanity person on the right is the protector.
Azira has been reflecting on the cruelties of Heaven and would know Crowley does not want to go back (Crowley says so multiple times in s1) but looks surprised that he says no. (If they are switched Crowley would not know Azira has been reflecting on this and would be surprised the he said no)
Azira saying I can make a difference (the other angels have beat him down and shown him he can't so many times I doubt he believes that but Crowley does)
Azira specifies Crowley will be his second in command (there is no reason for him to specify this but if it is Crowley he is telling Azira that he is not up to anything and will answer to him)
Crowley says you are better than this (means very little unless it is the other way around Azira has spent the whole season reflecting on Crowley being better than heaven)
Crowley confessing does not move the narrative he has said all of that before in S1.
Crowley says you are always there for me (Crowley always saves Azira)
Crowley says they pretend not to be a team (Azira pretends they are not a team Crowley always says they are.)
The confession mirrors pride and prejudice, (aziraphale is loves with pride and prejudice.)
Crowley says if Belzebub/Gabriel can do it we can (Crowley suggest they running away together in S1 he already knew, Belz/Jim's story didn't change things but Azira can be seen in the background excited and reaching for Crowley when they confess this is when HE realized they could be together)
Azira is shocked Crowley is leaving (Every time they fight Crowley leaves until he calms down and comes back and Ariza waits, this is the normal dynamic so why is he suprised, if they are swapped it would be weird for Aziraphale to be upset and leaving especially in the wrong body)
Azira uses some of the same language Crowley used to convince him in last season. (Azira using Crowley's speech patterns)
Crowley has at least seen movies with kissing and would know not to kiss like it was a fight (if they are switched Azira is drawing from experience of their past for how he should kiss while still looking like Crowley and this looks like the scene where Crowley pushes Azira against the wall for calling him nice(Also that's probably been in his head for a minute))
Azira seems shocked but has been trying to work towards something like this all season (Crowley would be shocked)
Azira holding his lips and looking shocked (if they are switched Crowley not realizing that Azira was confessing but thought he was pretending to be Crowley did not realize until this moment)
After a fight Crowley always runs and Azira always waits (Crowley is waiting by the Bentley)
The Bentley can tell them apart and plays modern not bebop music and drives away slowly
After the credits roll Azira smiles and the smile doesn't look like how Azira smiles but it looks like Crow as Azira in the hell fire scene in S1
Neil gaiman repeats/forshadows earlier in this episode Azira is waiting for Crowley to save him from demons and Crowley comes back after because he left to go to heaven.
Neil repeats/ shell game mentioned multiple times they make similar movements in the intro
Crowley knows from the Gabriel docs that Armageddon 2 is in plan and would have a reason to go back to heaven Azira would not necessarily know this yet or have a reason to go back especially if he had already said he was not going.

aziraphale lie theory
okay ive gone back and forth on the lie theory and recently ive gone back to it. this is why:
he's acting like he's lying/hiding something. its the same way he lies earlier in the season, with that smile on his face. he's acting different and being insensitive toward crowley (“you’re the bad guys”, assuming he wants to be an angel again) which his way of trying to make crowley see through the lie because he does want/need crowley to come with him. he wants crowley to see that he's acting different, that he's in danger, and that he needs his help. (this is also why i think he forgives him. he's forgiving him for saying no, for leaving, for not understanding what was really being said--also plays into "i don't think you understand what im offering you" wouldn't it be funny if aziraphale was right and crowley was wrong?)
the whole plot of s2 is centered around lying to heaven/hell by hiding gabriel. we see aziraphale learn to lie, sin, and question his faith all in the job minisode (he's just an angel that goes along with heaven as far as he can!!!). it would be so perfect if the finale flipped this, and instead of lying to heaven for crowley, aziraphale lied to crowley for heaven.
in the 1941 minisode, we learn that aziraphale has placed his trust in crowley, and asks crowley to do the same ("trust me"). this connects to point 1. he's once again asking crowley to trust him, but this time, he doesn't.
we are shown so little of what happens between the metatron's arrival and the confession scene. all of a sudden its morning and nina is opening the shop?? we are also given so little of the conversation between aziraphale and the metatron
overall, the minisodes are important and aziraphale loves and trusts crowley more than anyone/anything. i think he lies because it fits.

More on Ineffability and What Comes Next
So @ghstptats put up a really well thought out post on Aziraphale and the Ineffability that we're all mired in. @dunkthebiscuit and I had a little back and forth about it that got me thinking.
So we have 3 narratives here that are confounding us about the end of Season 2 and where things go from here:
.....that's really the problem right now, innit.....either Neil is betraying the characters, or he's betraying US. I truly don't see how that needle gets threaded. Because Things. Have. Been. Said. between these two. And actions taken. And body swaps, drugged coffee, apology dances, 11th hour appearances of a Deus ex Machina and other tricks are just not going to work this time. If we're still playing Hide the Lady, that means there's an option #3 that we haven't seen yet.
So I spent the afternoon digging in my garden, where I do some of my best thinking and this thought came to me.
Tumblr media
We haven't heard from the Almighty in a long damn time. She seems to have checked out, turned off her phone, gone dark. Meantime, stuff is happening. Seems like the Metatron is kinda running things, and he's got some ideas that sound a bit...scary, shall we say? The whole senior administrative team seem like they're up to no good.
If we take the ending of Season 2 at face value we would have to accept that Aziraphale and Crowley broke up/were forced apart rather acrimoniously when the Metatron appeared (Literally and figuratively a Deus ex Machina). The leading theories-drugged coffee, switched identities, pretending, etc-don't make sense, either because they've been used before, or because they betray the integrity of these 2 characters. The other option is that it happened exactly the way we saw it, which also requires a suspension of disbelief because we saw Crowley break down AND we saw Aziraphale' behaviour towards him for the whole season contradicted with the things he did and said in that last 15 minutes.
Since Neil Gaiman is a master of misdirection, we have to conclude that something else is happening, right? Because neither of the options presented make sense going forward. Nor are they compatible with a *satisfying* ending-even if it's not a happy one.
Remember when the Metatron and Aziraphale start their conversation, and Aziraphale says "I don't believe there's anything left to be said. I've made my position quite clear" ? We don't really talk about that much.
So seems there has been some sort of discussion or communication between them that we don't know about. (By extension, we can assume that our heroes are talking to one another outside of the story, right? Not everything between them happens on screen.)
Tumblr media
This got me thinking: who might be the one character for whom both of these two *would* pull off a game of "Hide the Lady" in order to save the world, that they would work together in secret, that they would be willing to appear to sacrifice everything, and truly act the part, as if their very existences depended on it?
What's their safe word, d'you think? Under what sort of circumstances would one of them drop it?
Tumblr media
I don't know how far I want to take this, but I'm gonna bet that if there IS a third path that makes sense, it involves God-and thwarting the Metatron. Maybe that's part of the Ineffable Plan.

The Alternate Coffee Theory
okay i've been thinking about this a lot. like an unhealthy amount. so: the coffee that the metatron buys for aziraphale is obviously significant. however.
i'm starting to think that its significance really doesn't have that much of a role to play in season 3's plot as we might think, or as the coffee theory might suggest. it might honestly just be important because of all that it symbolises in the last episode, aka earthly desires and by extension, the metatron's hatred of humans and crowley. hear me out
Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death, aka The Metatron Hates Humanity
when i tell y'all i genuinely even tried abbreviating Large Oat Milk Latte With A Dash Of Almond Syrup in case there was some subliminal hidden message in that order... yeah that didn't work out. but honestly i think the main thing to take away from this scene is that the metatron hates humans.
the metatron (so demeaningly): your establishment. i assume they always ask for coffee (eye roll) (deep sigh) (dripping with sarcasm)
nina: no one ever asks for death no :)
the metatron (mockingly): no i don't suppose they doooooo. sooo predictable
the metatron does not mention anything about the world or humans when he's talking to aziraphale (at least not what is shown to us, but if he didn't at all then it's very interesting that aziraphale didn't pick up on that, but that's a whole separate thing).
what this scene with the coffee mostly does is establish the metatron as The Antagonist of season 3. yeah, it's already hinted by the second coming bomb drop, but this solidifies it: he thinks of himself as superior to humans, he genuinely does not care what happens to them. and it'll be harder to change his mind (which aziraphale will undoubtedly try to) because of this.
"Where Would I Get My Coffee?" aka Aziraphale Exposing His Priorities, aka The Metatron Hates Crowley
this is where i think the coffee is REALLY important. it draws out some interesting conversations between the metatron and aziraphale that go exactly how the metatron intended. and also, while the previous scene shows how he hates humans, everything from that point on shows that he hates crowley.
"shall i?" "drink it? of course. i've ingested things in my time."
this has definitely been said before but to reiterate, the metatron is trying to appeal to aziraphale here with human things, which is funny considering we've established that he hates humans. i think from this point onwards, the metatron is trying to parse out just how attached aziraphale is to humanity.
you can kind of see his intent when aziraphale says the coffee is very nice and he replies "yes, i should jolly well hope so". when i first heard that i was all ???? why the hell did he say it like that? but i think it's him confirming that yes, aziraphale partakes in earthly pleasures. maybe there's something to be said here about gluttony being a sin? no idea. so yes, aziraphale loves the world. but then:
2. "where would i get my coffee?"
now THIS is interesting. because aziraphale says "no, i don't want to go to heaven. where would i get my coffee?" and the metatron doesn't say anything like "as archangel you can go wherever you want. you can come back to earth and drink coffee. you can manifest coffee in heaven."
NO. he says "you can have crowley with you". it's a very pointed segue. and if we take it that we are shown all the important parts of the conversation, that means that aziraphale accepts the offer pretty much right after learning that he can be with crowley.
so in the previous point, in the bookshop, the metatron confirms that aziraphale loves and knows humanity. now here, he confirms (this is what he thinks, at least) that aziraphale loves humanity, and he loves crowley more. and to him, this is A Major Problem.
The Offer, aka The Metatron's True Intentions
okay, now let's talk about the metatron's offer to 1. make aziraphale an archangel, and 2. make crowley an angel too.
yes, the second coming is the metatron's major goal. yes, he wants aziraphale to help. but not in the way he thinks: he wants aziraphale to help by getting out of the way. this means that the offer to make crowley an angel again was genuine, because no matter which way it goes, him and heaven benefit from this.
aziraphale and crowley, together, loving humanity, is literally all that stands between heaven and The Ineffable Plan, because that was the case for Armageddidn't. if the metatron gets both of them to go to heaven, fantastic! the troublemakers removed willingly from humanity and doing good (aka advancing the plan).
if crowley refuses to go with aziraphale, fantastic! he knows how much aziraphale relies on crowley. he thinks they're weaker when they're not together. by separating him from all that he loves and directing his attention elsewhere, that's when they can really start doing things.
Coffee Recap and What This Means For Season 3
ok so. tldr. the coffee was placed in the show for symbolic reasons, to set up all these scenes and conversations and show the metatron's true intentions. maybe the coffee even represents aziraphale's attachment to things that are decidedly not heaven, but are in fact heaven's rejects. heaven's fallen. the metatron has decided to make that his problem.
now maybe they really will brainwash aziraphale in heaven, or refuse to let him go back to earth or communicate with crowley in any way. but that doesn't take away from the fact that aziraphale went up there for what he genuinely believes is right, and that is what matters to me, honestly.
but this makes the metatron a lot more sinister than i originally thought. he's very smart; that offer he made wasn't an offer at all, because either way it went would have benefited him. and the fact that he's thought this through means that this is definitely not the end. crowley is probably in danger. aziraphale will be put under a lot of control that would be hard to break free of.
i don't think there's a possibility of them changing the metatron's mind, but i might be wrong. i do think that the season will end with humanity saved and heaven becoming a better place, maybe a joint partnership with hell, but whether they defeat the metatron or somehow make the whole of heaven and hell see sense is past me.

another long rant- this one about crowley and his trauma from the Fall and I know this has probably all been said before but anyway,
Angel! Crowley had a close working relationship with the "upstairs” at the very least but didn't know about earth and creation of humans - (something that once it is created begins the countdown to the destruction of what she literally just created and they won't even be able to see it)- and doesn't know that someone has already been going around questioning things (I'm assuming this based of how nervous aziraphale got when he started talking about asking questions/suggestions)
but when they went to go ask I don't think they ever got as far as asking God and was more likely the metatron -(one because when Job got to talk to God we got the line "but Just to be able to ask the questions” and two the metatron saying "always asking them damn fool questions” and three in season one "there is no one else just God moving in mysterious ways and not talking to any of us" ).
so I'm just imagining angel Crowley walking away from asking her questions about why it has to happen this way why can't her stars live and run their course and then stumbling across angels that were also questioning and “hey they know some of those angels even Lucifer is over there and he's Gods favorite maybe he knows something”
But we all know how that turned out for him
(I would also like to point out furfur’s line about jumping on his back like a monkey in waistcoat doesn't sound like a move you would do in a war -it sounds a move children do when playing - and then that got me thinking about the nursery rhyme 'five little monkeys’ - which is try to teach kids a lesson about authority and the consequences of when you don't listen - anyway I'm spiraling)
Back to the point Crowley never meant to Fall - didn't know it was going to end in a battle -a war started by angels against angels never crossed their mind -they stumble into a war with no time to escape and he has learned his lesson now
Crowley always wants to run away when having to battle Heaven because now he has the chance to and knows he can't win against the heavenly host - he has already lost everything once he doesn’t want to go through that again
But even with all this Crowley still loves God - she doesn't want to - she’s angry and betrayed but still loves God - (he is the only demon we see try to talk to Her and still leaves the option open to answer him because She never has)- they were never cast out from God they were cast out from heaven

call me crazy but i REALLY enjoyed the ending of good omens s2! (spoilers below the cut)
OKAY crowley points this out when he tells gabriel to jump out the window, but aziraphale didnt actually witness heaven's direct cruelty to him, didnt experience first hand how willing they were to throw him away and kill him the second he disagreed with them. crowley, however, did. we dont know if they ever told each other exactly what happened, or if crowley ever told zira that gabriel had said "just shut your stupid mouth and die already." it clearly lasted with crowley, he remembers the exact words.
the choice neil made for aziraphale to not yet fully understand that "good guys" and "bad guys" arent accurate depictions of heaven and hell makes sense when you realize that he's never received the reality of being punished by them. crowley isn't naive though, he's been through this more than once, has witnessed the cult like mentality of heaven and hell and tried to help aziraphale escape. he's always tried to help zira come to his own conclusions, and usually, he at least comes to an understanding (poor people DO have less opportunities, and you're helping science!). you can feel his desperation when hes asking his angel to leave with him, both in season 1 and season 2. but that resignation in his eyes when he realizes that zira is still stuck in the cult of heaven, still cant really see in shades of grey- he knows that nothing he says or does will change zira's mind; the only thing that will change his mind is seeing first hand the cruelty and lack of compassion from heaven towards aziraphale himself.
there were so many amazing moments where they showed the lack of knowledge from heaven. the rule that they're not to visit earth, not to know too much (or anything, it seems) about humans. because someone in heaven knows that access to knowledge makes you smarter, makes you curious, makes you ask questions. whether or not thats the decision of god, or of metatron remains to be seen. but one person being in charge, who's clearly clueless but pretends to know what god wants, is classic cult leader shit. people who follow along without question, who assume that their will is good- that's what the angels are. its hard to truly hate them when you realize that they're all under the same thumb. that scene when uriel asks the metatron if they've done something wrong was kind of heart breaking, they're just children playing a game they were never told all the rules to.
what makes crowley so fascinating as a character is that he's curious, he asks questions. he's not good, he's not bad, he's just... himself. honestly, he's more human than demon in his choices. what he said about following hell as far as he can, so he can stay on his own side is just perfect- and yeah, lonely. and i cant even imagine how lonely he feels now. im obsessed with how we're shown his attempts at changing aziraphale's mind - something about him being the one to encourage aziraphale to try human food, something about him inviting aziraphale to Edinburgh to show him how poverty forces you to make morally questionable choices, that not everything is black and white - idk. it's subtle, it's allowing him to come to the same conclusion on his own, it makes me want to shovel aquarium gravel into my mouth
aziraphale, when he's away from heaven's influence, is much more morally grey, he's more himself, he's happier. but as soon as his superiors are around, he loses all sense of self. he automatically assumed he was going to fall for lying to the other angels and not killing innocent children. he knows better than to ask questions, he KNOWS that what he's asked to do is sometimes wrong, but he has this cognitive dissonance he cant get past- heaven asks him to do things that are bad, but heaven isnt bad. heaven is always good, so what theyre asking must not be bad. but, killing children is pretty objectively bad. he cant kill children. but its god's will, so he has to, it must be good. but its not. and round and round it goes. he's never actually been punished by heaven firsthand, and i think once he sees close up that heaven's will isn't necessarily god's will, and that god's will is not always benevolent, he'll realize. he'll realize that you cant always change things from the inside, that there's a systematic issue that can only be solved by dismantling the institution. god i hope season 3 is dismantling heaven.
all in all i love this ending i am SUCH a sucker for escaping cult stories (nimona and she-ra, nd stevenson i love u). like your whole life you are so sure that you're doing the right thing, and then someone comes along and turns everything upside down and asks you questions, forces you to ask questions, and you can't help but defend where you came from, surely there has to be some mistake, if you could just talk to someone higher up you're sure you could clear this whole misunderstanding up, and then that higher up tell you point blank that they know what theyre doing, they know that innocent people are getting hurt. you witness their violence firsthand, and its intentional, its directed towards YOU. because you dared to ask if what we're doing is really the right thing. and that's when you finally understand.

Setting up the second coming
Very VERY new Good Omens fan so please be nice to me <3
I think the mention of the first fall of a prince of heaven, bringing up that Crowley was a high-ranking angel, Crowley not introducing himself by his Angel name at the beginning of the Universe, and him being the Angel to speak Light into existence, is a proper set up to the season 3 revelation of him being Lucifer. (This would only work if we assume that Lucifer is a different entity than Satan because we've seen him in Season 1. Although Crowley being the snake in the garden and the one to tempt Christ in the desert could mean that his and Satan's myths have been mixed together at some point ? so idk maybe they ARE different? I mean DC Lucifer was based on Neil Gaiman's the Sandman Lucifer and he doesn't look like that)
I want to imagine that Crowley as Lucifer would do things in heaven that Satan would get credit for and Satan had always been a credit-grabbing douche but Crowley does everything anyway because it just gives him more freedom to play with the humans, the stars, and Aziraphale to stay below the radar. Satan's ego inflates, he challenges heaven, he falls. Crowley questions the necessity of war and the absence of forgiveness but the morale, stability, and authority of heaven had just been damaged because of the war so questions like Crowley's would have been dangerous. Heaven learns how close he had worked with Satan and uses it to make a high-ranking angel like him an example, so he saunters vaguely downwards. All of this said, I am assuming one too many princes of heaven falling but I'm sure it will work out. I've never been good at math anyway but God is also Three persons so neither is heaven with people math hehe.
Aziraphale, is set up as the supreme archangel, but as we know, there are higher orders than his (The Metatron) so if he were to be in charge of Christ's second coming, he might have to manage Christ closely. The return of Christ could bring up even sourer memories for Crowley as before the incarnation of Christ, he (as Lucifer) was God's second. (I wouldn't know how they will handle the triplicity of God's nature though because if God had always been Father-Son-Holy Spirit, it would mean there had been a son prior to incarnation). Adding onto this pain would be seeing Aziraphale so close to God the Son. I think if there would ever be reconciliation between Crowley and Christ, it would come from their shared experience of humanity and an appeal to Christ's suffering and unnecessary sacrifice of His human life. I imagine a recall of Christ's question of how he was abandoned and forsaken, and a lesson on attachment (Christ of letting go and Crowley of how it betters you).
I'm hoping @neil-gaiman sees this. I am obsessed with the new season and my mind is RUNNING.

also, about the lucifer theory, i'm not sure if people are forgetting it or have some explanation i missed but crowley refers to lucifer as a separate person in the bar scene in 1x05. "oh hey it's lucifer and the guys... [something about food not being great lately?] next thing i know i'm doing a million light year freestyle dive into a pool of boiling sulfur"
maybe he was another archangel that hasn't been mentioned yet, or really just a throne or dominion- those would both give a lot of respect and power, right?
there's imagination too. that's how he holds the car together, so it seems he can do a *lot* just by imagining he can. that explains extra power outside of the pre fall scene
also i doubt that him being serpent of eden and doing other things that are mostly credited to satan are actually indicators of him being lucifer, just a joke that it was Some Guy Named Crawly who caused the fall of humanity
*i don't want it to be true though so i'm definitely biased and finding any argument against it💀
I’ve seen people suggest that he was repeating what other angels said about him, possibly out of guilt…but I’m pretty confident it was written with the intention that it’s solely from his perspective.
I also think that it would be really confusing to make Lucifer and Satan different people.
I have a feeling he’ll be some sort of Archangel, because that’s the way things seem to be pointed (Shax not making fun of him for suggesting he could’ve been responsible for a miracle only the “mightiest of Archangels” could’ve performed, for example. I also didn’t really agree with this at first, but in the scene where he tells her something like “you might even find an Archangel”, it’s interesting how the focus is on him. It could just be for comedic effect, where the Archangel in question is in the blurry background because he isn’t being noticed due to the miracle. But that combined with the camera panning to him for the Metatron’s line about a prince of Heaven falling, it seems like it could possibly mean something).
I don’t really want him to have been an Archangel. I’ve always liked the idea that both of them are nobodies. Just some guys that had the courage to rebel against the system. But I can see things going that route unfortunately.
I agree with you about imagination! It’s possible we’re all looking way too much into Crowley’s unique powers…it could just be that he had a very good imagination, even better than Aziraphale. Personally I’d prefer it that way.
I also agree with you about the Serpent of Eden thing. It was almost certainly written as a joke, that we all assume it was some big important figure when really it was just…some guy. At the same time, with everything else combined, I can see it being used as an indicator that he’s Lucifer.
Like I think I’ve said before, I like the idea as something to explore in fan fiction. It’s interesting enough to want to play around with. I just don’t want it to be canon.

Destiel Chronicles
Vol. LXXXIX
It was a love story from the very beginning
"You, me... And Sam."
Hello my friends!!! How are you? I feel much better now thanks to all your asks and your memes and your cracks, I adore them all!
Okay, putting that to a side, and still dreaming about how Jensen will give us the ending we all deserve, let's continue with this analysis, because is time to talk about the mixtape.
From butterflies in the stomach and Foreshadows of the new God
When the episode starts, there's a hint of what Jack's mission is. But coming out from Dagon's mouth, it became like a real bad future.
Dagon: Yeah. And he's not gonna stop there. Every sad, weak human, every tight-ass angel, every sniveling demon they'll all be consumed. So go ahead. Play your games. But whether you're healthy or sick, filthy or clean, He will be born. Good times.
Is almost the contrary to what Jack will actually do for the world. He will consume but it will be Chuck's powers until the last drop of it. And against Dagon's speech, he will save each demon and angel and restore everything.
Now, let's talk about CAS coming back to the bunker...
Tumblr media
Gif credit @godshipsit
I think his face is saying everything here. The one entering in the bunker after go MIA, was Cas', so, Dean's face is scandalous.
Imagine that suddenly your disappeared crush enters through the door without previous announcement. Of cour we can read the bumping heart allnover Dean's cheek, his eyes went wide, in surprise. 'Is CAS!'
He was so worried this whole time, thinking the worst could happen to him, and now CAS is there, alive.
But his reaction to it will be completely different to Sam's reaction. This was settled to make us see the difference between how a friend would react and how a lover would react. Blatant.
Sam: Hey. You're all right. Um – Where have you been?
Sam is asking as a friend, but Dean, Dean doesn't...
Dean: Let me rephrase that for Sam. Where the hell have you been? And why have you ignored our phone calls?
Okay, let's just stop here, this is the way a wife will ask her husband. But because we are talking about Dean, we can see his shield. His shield is US/WE, his shield is SAM, because he wants to drag his brother into the feeling of being desperately worried. Because recognize that DEAN WAS THE ONLY ONE ALMOAT LOOSING HIS HEAD TRYING TO KNOW IF CAS WAS ALIVE OR WHWRE HE WAS IA SHOWING WEAKNESS, IS SHOWING HIS TRUE FEELINGS FOR THE ANGEL. So, the theme of the I/ME vs the WE/US is perfectly written all over this episode.
Castiel: Where I was, the – the reception was, uh, poor.
Dean: No bars? No bars. That's his excuse. Wow.
Castiel: I was in Heaven. I was working with the angels. When I saw Dagon had captured Kelly, I-I thought they could help.
Okay Castiel is proving he is lying by himself here, because he said first he had not signal, and now, he heard one of the so many voice mails Dean had left in his phone.
Sam: And?
Castiel: Nothing.
Sam: Well, at least you're back. We're glad you're back
And be prepared again for the difference between the friend and the JILTED lover.
Dean: Really? No, I'm sorry. Okay, 'cause while you were striking out in Heaven, we had a shot at Dagon, and we lost.
Maybe Dean was waiting Sam to second him in his anger. But it was only in Dean's heart, the deception, and the recalling of so many days be worried about CAS. Because that's what romantic love makes you be.
Castiel: I know. I received your messages.
This was like a bomb for Dean...
Dean: Oh, you did – you did receive the messages? Okay, that's good.
Sarcasm...
Castiel: Dean.
Tumblr media
Gif credit @starlightcastiel
Dean can't handle the pain in his heart of being rejected and ignored by Castiel, so he searches for his shield again: We/Us/Sam and me.
Dean: So not only were you ditching us, but you were also ignoring us? That's great. 'Cause we really could've used the backup. But, uh, you were too busy with, um (Clicks tongue) What was it? Nothing?
Castiel: Dean, I –
Dean: What the hell is wrong with you, man? You know, whatever. That's (Chuckles) Yeah. Welcome back. (walks away)
Dean is so mad with CAS. And is blatant that his reaction is totally different to Sam's.
The Mixtape as a way to reciprocate Castiel's confession, and the desperate attempt to make CAS to stay by his side.
Okay, we are now in the scene. I'm sure this scene had been dissected by many meta writers. I won't say new things, but i will point a little to their body languages.
Okay, the scene starts with Castiel knocking at Dean's door to give him back the mixtape, so jus aknowledged there that Dean gave CAS a freaking mixtape, which doesn't have another meaning that ROMANTIC. But we can assume Castiel doesn't get this human's customaries, also, we can assume he does, because boop culture that Metatron out at once in his head... So...
After Dean, without looking at him, because he is mad and now he has to handle this angel lack of knowledge about WHAT GIFTING A MIXTAPE MEANS, he said "It's a gift, you keep those."
And Castiel gets nervous.
Tumblr media
Gif credit @stardustcas
The swallow and the way he opens his mouth again to breathe and maybe to say something else, but he stopped himself. Castiel is nervous. I thought at first because he has to find the Colt, and he knew Dean kept it in his room. But we know now that it wasn't just that. He was flustered because the intimacy of the situation with the man he loves.
Castiel looks around before attempting to leave, maybe searching for the Colt, but then Dean starts talking:
Dean: Cas, you can't – With everything that's going on, you can't just go dark like that. We didn't know what happened to you. We were worried. That's not okay.
And in the middle of the intimate scene, awkward moment, Dean needs his shield more than never.
Castiel: Well, I didn't mean to add to your distress. I – Dean, I just keep failing. Again and again. When you were taken, I searched for months and I couldn't find you. And then Kelly escaped on my watch, and I couldn't find her. And I just wanted I needed to come back here with a win for you. For myself.
This speech is so important, because it shows how depressed Castiel felt, how uneasy. How unworthy. He needed to be useful. So he decided to start alone this dangerous journey that will end in his death. He also mentions the win. Because he didn't know he will be always Dean's win, as we will see in episode 13x06 when CAS comes back to Dean alive.
After they talk about Dragon, and Cas' asks if Sam and Dean are willing to kill an innocent, because that's dirty work, that's the mission CAS had taken in his own shoulders, Dean says this...
Dean: We will find a better way.
Castiel: You mean, we?

Cas points at Dean with the mixtape, because he wants to clarify if Dean is referring to them, to JUST CAS AND DEAN. YOU AND ME. THE TWO OF US. And Dean is now the flustered one. Look at Dean's face, being in just one spot, recognizing that the shield can be broken, that he is talking about CAS and him. Is too intimate. Too different. So his face is burning. And even so, the words are out. 'Yes, dumbass, we.'
What was this? This was an attempt coming from Castiel to get to know Dean's feelings. Pointing with the mixtape to just Dean and him. Not Sam here. Not shield. And Dean goes for it. Goes for that WE: YOU AND ME.
But then, Dean backtraks

Tumblr media Tumblr media
He starts explaining the WE, avoiding Castiel's gaze, he goes... 'You, me...' and then he tilts his head, and adds the shield back again: 'and Sam.'
The second gif is showing Dean backtracking, Because is too intimate, is too risky, he is standing on the edge between friendship and something else. He can't cross that line. Mostly because he is not sure about Castiel's feelings for him, and more now, after seeing how CAS ignored him for so long. Dean is like:
"What am I doing? Let's mention Sam here, and turn this into no homo conversation."
But the nervousness is all over the scene, i got nervous watching it because the awkward moment!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
More nervousness. Dean's flustered eyes. The swallowing. The attempt of staring into those blue eyes of the man he loves. (The butterflies in the stomach, the heart beating fast, the dry mouth) trying to make the conversation more normal, but their faces are loud.
Vas says he likes that and then Dean is more frustrated than never and his dry mouth is asking for a beer, or maybe he find a way out from the awkward moment, the gay moment. He needs to breathe. He almost let his guard down with this angel. And the desperate way to say STAY WITH ME. DON'T GO AWAY AGAIN. To his angel.
Castiel engages with a seductive look in the middle of the sexual tension
Sam: I mean, how did Cass even get the Colt out of the safe in the first place?
Dean drops his head. Sam raises an eyebrow
Sam Dean, you – you put the Colt back in the safe, right? Dean?
Dean: It was under my pillow. It – I like to keep it close. (Sighs) He came into my room and he played me.
Okay i can even explain the intimacy of this. Even if CAS didn't know about this and he just went searching all over Dean's room. Mention this after the huge scene full of romantic tension, has a meaning. Again: INTIMACY. And adding the "He played me" to all of this is another symbol way to show theme audience this was like that scene between the guy and his crush, in wich his crush takes advantage of it and plays him by stealing something from him. Yes.
Finally, when they find CAS... This scene...
Tumblr media
Gif credit @stardustcas
Dean is mad, very mad at him. Because Castiel really played him. But... Look at the scene. Look at Castiel's gaze: PURE SEDUCTION. He maybe is aware of the effect he causes on Dean. And after the mixtape scene, he goes for it. Seduction as if they were in their first seasons together. And Dean is muted, and stares at him, then checks him out, and they're in their own sexual tension world, until Sam calls him. But he has to calls him twice because his brother is too embedded into Castiel's hot behavior.
But don't forget Dean is mad at him. So now, is Dean the one playing around with CAS. Throwing the keys at him and making him almost loose his stability to reach them.
Closing the circle
When Dean and Sam reach Castiel again in the middle of a battle with Dragon, Dean's desperation when Dagon is about to smite Castiel is high level.
But then Jack saves the day, not just showing CAS the future (the ending of season 15) but also, Jack gave him powers to finish Dagon.
Then, the scene in wich Castiel heals Dean is full of intimacy again. The lingerie touch, rubbing fingers. Because Dean is moving his hand slowly away from CAS touch but he ended by letting his hand to feel Castiel's rubbing his fingers. To let Castiel to heal him.
And then, CAS is gone again.
To Conclude:
12x19: The Future has Destiel all over it. Dean mad at him, reaching the level of a JILTED lover. Dean way to protect himself from another rejection using the WE/US/SAM shield. Just because he can't handle it. The doubts about Cas' feelings, and the way the angel always find to go MIA, makes his heart stutter.
The mixtape scene is one of the most emblematic. The nervousness is all over their faces, and Misha and Jensen transmite perfectly the romantic tension between the two characters and goes straight to our hearts, making us feel awkward and flustered too.
Hope you like this meta. See you in the next one!

I find it kind of poetic that Chuck first appeared as a seemingly human, bumbling writer and ended up becoming exactly that. He had fun in his Chuck guise and was left with it. He was no longer the god he was pretending not to be, he was now the guy he always wanted to be, or presented himself as, and now he's not happy. XD
I know, right? Like... we just saw Jack assume the mantle of Chuck AND Amara’s powers, in balance, like she’d wanted from Chuck. And we saw what HE chose to do with it, very much in opposition to what Chuck chose. Chuck wanted to participate in his creation directly, instead of being present as the force of creation in everything... heck that just sounds idiotic, but the concepts I’m attempting to describe aren’t really word-compatible in English >.>
(can I blame Chuck for that? I think I’m gonna.)
We saw this in the episode with Adam, and his test for Jack-- choosing the stone that God had touched. I’m not even gonna get into the confirmation that Chuck had been screwing with people since Adam, 300,000 years ago (by Adam’s own count). Can you IMAGINE carrying a grudge that long? And recognizing the essential cruelty of the guy who created you just to toy with you?
And another aside... kinda goes a long way toward all the times the “breaking Daddy’s toys” metaphor was used by Lucifer and various versions of Michael. The archangels were the most direct and specific creations of Chuck’s own self, and I’ve written a lot about how they were less individuals and more just... four facets of Chuck’s own self. But that’s going way off topic, because that wasn’t enough for Chuck. He wasn’t content to just ~be in everything~ and be the force that connected everything and brought life to everything in a metaphysical sense. He wanted to be part of it, to interact with it all directly and play with the pieces to see what would happen.
Back to Adam, and his test. He looked almost disappointed that Jack only sensed Chuck’s presence in one of the stones, until Jack seemed confused by it, and said this:
JACK: Yes. [Adam looks slightly disappointed, but Jack goes on] And the others. All of them. They're just rocks but their existence makes them divine. Because God is in everything.
ADAM: [he sighs with relief and smiles at Jack] Right on. At least, he should be.
HE SHOULD BE. As in, the act of personifying himself into Chuck “concentrated” him into that form and “pulled him out” of the fabric of creation. Yes, he’s the force holding it all together, but in becoming Chuck, he... sort of lost touch with the rest of it and became more fascinated with his own game. And it all kind of went to his head.
All through it, he played the character Chuck pretty well, on the surface. But he as method as he got with the character (which we really saw on display in 11.20 when Metatron confronted him), that’s all Chuck ever was. He put on a decent act of being human, but I don’t think he truly understood the experience of humanity, or human love. He only understood the adulation he expected to receive from humanity (and which was sort of hardwired into angels).
But he never really understood his own creation, from the human perspective. Meanwhile, Dean Humanity Winchester is over there being like... it’s awful to play games like this with all of humanity! And Cas... in this one universe... listened. Cas came close to falling so many times, and spent a short (and awful) time as a human himself, but I think he truly got to EXPERIENCE humanity as a human. I don’t think he would see it as a “downgrade” to be human the way Chuck clearly feels about his demotion from all powerful and omniscient being to Just Some Guy with a blank book.
Just like everyone else, though, now he’s got to write his own story. And I don’t think he ever really wanted that. He just... wanted to screw with everyone else’s stories. And now he has to truly make one for himself, and he doesn’t even have one friend on the planet.
I found Michael’s bit to be fascinating, how even after Chuck disappeared, Michael carried on with everything just as if he was still there, building churches and basically turning chuck into an idol to be worshipped, which is weird-- this hollow reflection of the truth, when Chuck as God should’ve been a part of everything instead of focused on messing with creation for kicks.
Now that Jack has reclaimed that power-- having experienced true humanity for himself and what the loss of that humanity had truly changed in him-- and then having his humanity restored to feel the weight of his own actions... yeah, Jack understands completely, and has finally restored the balance that Chuck should’ve been but never was. Not by being a guy to be worshipped, but by bringing what was missing from every aspect of creation.
Probably even to poor old Chuck, if he’s willing and able to do a bit of true self-reflection now, the way Jack did, and the way Cas has done that brought him to the point where he fully understood his own love, and what it means to truly care about people.
I thought it was a fantastic resolution.

A/N: Hey! The following chapter does contain some aspects of the Supernatural episode Byzantium. I would like to just state that I do not own those particular paragraphs of this chapter or of course the characters (but we already knew that). You probably didn’t expect the chapter to go this way, it was my plan from the beginning because of an idea I had, can’t tell you yet. Anyway, hope you don’t mind and I hope you enjoy! XX

Chapter 8
Tossing and turning, surrounding yourself with your Alphas scent, no matter how hard you tried, you can’t sleep. Your thoughts are on Jack, the image of him collapsing on the floor, coughing up blood, is replaying over and over in your mind. He had quickly become your closest friend, keeping you company while Sam and Dean went on hunts. You had made a habit of sneaking into the ‘Dean Cave’, cooking up some popcorn and watching movies for hours at a time. The way Jack’s eyes fixed on the T.V like an excited puppy always made you smile. You had barely known him, but the memory of him passing away, his hand grasped firmly in yours, was overwhelming.
You shove the covers off and leave your room in search of Dean and some comfort. You had gone to bed once he and Cas brought Sam back safely after he had left the bunker, feeling the need for some alone time. Hours have passed and your need for your Alpha grew stronger every second.
You find him passed out in the kitchen, surrounded by empty glasses and half drunk bottles of whiskey, snoring louder than you had ever heard.
‘Dean...Dean, you shouldn’t sleep here.’ You speak softly into his ear and gently shake his shoulder in an effort to wake him up. ‘Dean.’
‘I don’t think he’s waking up anytime soon, Y/N.’ You turn around to face Cas, who is watching you from the doorway. ‘Why are you awake?’
‘I never went to sleep, couldn't.’ You admit quietly, knowing what was going to come next, silently wishing it was Sam who had found you.
Cas glances between you and Dean before sighing and holding out his hand, ‘It would be unfair to wake him now. Come on, I’ll get you settled.’
You place your hand in his and let him lead you back to your room, but you don’t make it easy for him, dragging your feet along the way. There is no hiding the fact that you are frustrated with him, with everyone. Jack is dead and they are still hiding things. You want to know why Jack was sick in the first place, and for how long. You want to know why, whenever you ask about anything supernatural related you are ignored.
‘Y/N, what are you doing? Aren’t you tired?’ Cas asks when you pull your hand from his and take a few steps back to put some space between you.
‘I am tired. I am tired of being kept in the dark. Did you ever think that maybe I would have been able to help Jack if I had known what was going on? He was my friend, and I lost him, and I don’t even know why. All you guys do is keep me in the dark for ‘my protection’, but one day, that’s going to come back and bite you in the arse. I may have been afraid of the idea of monsters being real when I first moved in, but I’ve seen Sam and Dean come back from enough hunts to accept that truth now. I’m ready to fight, to help. Dean, he is never going to let me near a gun. I need you to let me help, teach me to fight Cas, please.’
Cas stares at you, surprised by your outburst. He frowns for a moment, deep in thought, before approaching you slowly. ‘I’m sorry you feel that way. I will talk to Dean.’
You roll your eyes at his response and slouch your shoulders. ‘Like that will do...Hey!’
Cas cuts you off mid sentence, grabbing you around the waist and placing two fingers to your forehead. ‘Go to sleep Y/N’
   ‘Y/N, wake up,’
‘Omega.’ A firm hand on your shoulder and the smooth voice of your Alpha draws you from a peaceful, deep sleep. Your eyes meet Deans tired ones, the bags sitting below them prominent.
‘Morning’. You sit up against the bed head, accepting the glass of water Dean offers you.
   ‘Afternoon, actually.’
‘Stupid Angel.’ You grunt, making Dean chuckle softly.
‘I had an interesting conversation with Cas this morning.’ He informs you, turning serious once again. ‘He told me you had trouble sleeping, went for a late night stroll.’
‘Didn’t realise that was something I wasn’t allowed to do.’ You shoot back. You aren’t sure where the attitude is coming from, but you are sick of Dean’s Alpha behaviour.
‘I didn’t say that.’ He speaks quickly, eyes scanning your face in an attempt to read your thoughts. ‘But he told me what you spoke about, and I’m sorry. Truly. My intentions were always to keep you safe, and in doing so, I’ve pushed you away. And you’re right, chances of you holding a gun in this lifetime, or any other lifetime are pretty small. But you’re also right, that I have been letting the Alpha in me control my actions, and I have been unfair to you. If you believe that you are ready, you can be put on research duty. That means books only, no knives, no guns, no ghosts. We got a deal?’
You stare at your Alpha with wide eyes, shocked and disbelieving. Dean stands up from the bed and smiles down at you, ‘You coming? You might want to get dressed. We have a guest.’
You take a few minutes to compose yourself, washing your face and brushing your teeth in the basin, before getting dressed and leaving your room in search of the others.
The library is not how you left it last night, furniture has been moved to the side, and Sam and Dean stand next to a table in the middle of what looks to be a very intense discussion making you pause at the door and hide behind the wall, you decide waiting out the conversation is the best idea.
‘Use the soul-sucking magic? Boy, that lady’s a peach.’ Dean’s tone of voice surprises you, and you realise this was one of the things he was trying to hide from you, his hunter side.
‘Listen, we talked about this.’ Sam interjects.
‘I know. Gotta happen. It’s the only way. Right. But I don’t like rolling the dice on some psycho ex-angel killer.’
‘I don’t love it, either, but taking risks, making crappy deals--that’s what we do.’
‘Yeah, and they usually bite us in the arse.’ You smile at Dean’s choice of words, remembering what you had said to Cas last night.
‘So, what do you want to do about it? Leave Jack in the morgue? Burn him?’ That’s the moment you realise that they were planning to do something about Jack, to try and bring him back. You had heard snippets of conversations before, you knew that both Sam and Dean had died at least once.
   ‘I didn’t say that.’
‘Because, for me, not doing this--that-- that would be like letting him die all over again.’ At Sam’s words your heart almost breaks all over again and you struggle to hold back tears.
‘I want Jack back, too okay? I do. I just don’t trust Lily. Especially with my little eavesdropper.’
If you hadn’t had that conversation with Dean ten minutes ago, your heart would have dropped to your stomach. You straighten your back and peek around the doorway with a small smile on your face. ‘I didn’t want to interrupt.’
Dean rolls his eyes but waves you over, and you reach him the same time Cas comes up the steps looking more than stressed.
‘You got a twenty on Jack?’ Dean asks, eyes pleading for a yes.
‘Not exactly. Angel Radio is playing a distress signal.’
‘Awesome’, He replies, letting his arms fall, surely mirroring his disappointment.
‘All of Heaven’s gates are open, even the ones that Metatron closed.’
‘What could that mean?’ Sam asks.
   ‘I don’t know but it’s not good.’
‘More awesome.’ Dean says, making you reach out and grab his hand giving it a reassuring squeeze.
‘All right, well you go. We got Lily. When we’re ready, we’ll pray.’ Sam says, hoping that the solution will be enough.
Cas shares a look with Sam and Dean before walking away and to do whatever he had to do.
‘What’s going on?’ You ask, turning back to face the two Alphas.
‘We may have a way to bring Jack back. It’s risky, but we figured it’s worth a shot. You can hang around for now, but if I need you to leave later, you have to trust me. We’ve never done this before Y/N.’
You are tempted to argue but something in Sam’s eyes makes you change your mind. He is watching you carefully, eyes wide, pleading with you to reassure Dean that you’ll listen.
‘Got it, just tell me to go make myself some lunch, and I’m gone.’ As soon as you see Dean’s entire body relax you know you have made the right decision and Sam shoots you the biggest smile, to which you respond with an eye roll. It’s as if they don’t believe you can behave.
‘Alright, hand me that glass bottle would ya?’ Dean gestures behind you as he moves to fiddle with some paint and a bowl on the table.
You pick it up, inspecting the clear liquid inside before handing it over and you and Sam watch as he pours the liquid in and stirs the paint around. He picks up the bowl and holds out a piece of paper for him to copy from and you watch in awe as Dean expertly paints a large symbol on the wooden floor.
‘The instruction manual’. You had been watching Dean so closely you hadn’t heard the footsteps of another person approach the three of you and you jump away in shock as she hands an old leather-bound book to Sam.
‘It’s alright Y/N,’ Sam reassures you before turning to face the older woman who you assume must be Lily gives you a questioning look before turning back to Sam. ‘Thanks. All right, we’re almost set. Just got to get one more thing. I’m gonna go grab it.’ He says, he gives you a second reassuring smile before walking off. You watch him go, as he does, he grabs Dean’s attention and nods in the direction of you and the strange woman.
Dean puts the bowl and brush down on the ground as he stands up and walks towards you, watching where he steps. He gives you a quick smile before addressing Lily.
‘You know, I think we got off to a bad start. Um, I guess I should be thanking you.’
‘Apology accepted.’ You frown at Lily’s response and her attitude towards your Alpha, but you stay quiet, unwilling to test any boundaries on the first day. ‘Are you going to introduce me?’
‘Uh, right. This is Y/N, my mate. Y/N, this is Lily Sunder, an old...acquaintance.’
‘Nice to meet you.’ You nod from your corner with a small smile, not a fan of strangers. Lily was a beta, but she gives off a weird vibe that makes you uncomfortable.
‘There, you’re acquainted, great. Except, something’s been bothering me. Uh, you know, if this magic of yours is so great...why’d you stop using it? You’re letting yourself get old. You’re letting yourself die. Why? Why risk going to hell if you don’t have to? There’s something you’re not telling us.’
You raise your eyebrows at Dean’s words and look to Lily, waiting for her answer. Is this magic too risky to use on Jack?
‘When Ishim took my daughter, I swore I’d kill him, even if it meant burning my entire soul. But it didn’t. I have a sliver, a whisper of my soul left.’
   ‘And?’ Dean prompts, getting impatient.
‘May--my daughter, my little girl--is in heaven. And if there is still a piece of my soul...Now do you understand?’
You are deep in thought when Sam comes back carrying a box filled to the brim with candles. You watch as he places them down at different points on the symbol like he had done it hundreds of times before.
‘Sweetheart.’ Your head whips up at the sound of Dean calling from the other side of the room, breaking you from your thoughts. ‘Why don’t you go make yourself that lunch we talked about.’ You glance back over to Sam who’s already looking at you, one eyebrow raised, a reminder of your promise.
‘I was getting hungry anyway. You know where I’ll be if you need me.’ Sending your Alpha one last long look before making your way to the kitchen.
You take your time, deciding to make a pasta salad, one of your favourite home-made dishes from before your parents became alcoholics.
Twenty minutes later, one potato salad and a cup of tea, your curiosity gets the better of you. You quietly make your way down the hallway and poke your head around the corner to see Jack sitting up on the table saying words you don’t understand, Sam and Dean standing either side of him.
‘Was that my soul?’ He asks, looking up at Dean.
‘How do you feel?’ Dean queries, his hands hovering over Jack as if he is expecting something to go wrong.
   ‘Good. I feel...good.’
Sam smiles as Dean gives Jack a quick hug.
‘It’s good to have you back’, he says with his hand resting on Jack’s shoulder.
You are about to join them when you notice Lily sitting in your favourite chair, umoving.
‘Lily, thank you,’ Dean speaks from beside Jack.
‘Yeah. Lily..’ Sam’ voice is halted when he sees Lily.
‘Lily?’ Dean calls once more but there is no response.
‘How about Jack and I go back to his room, I can help him get settled?’ You ask tentatively from the door.
The Alpha’s turn to face you faster than you thought possible. ‘How long have you been standing there?’ Sam asks, his lips twitching as he tries to hold back a smile.
‘Long enough. I got bored.’ You smile at Jack who slowly turns around to meet gaze.
Dean rolls his eyes at your excuse for leaving the kitchen but keeps his opinions to himself all the same. ‘You wanna hang out with Y/N for a bit Jack? We’ve got some clean-up to do.’
Jack nodded, ‘I like the sound of that,’ he says getting off the table and making his way over to you on wobbly legs.
‘I’ve changed my mind, why don’t we break into Dean’s room instead.’ You suggest, wagging your eyebrows at him in excitement.
‘Can we watch Star Wars? I like that one.’
‘Jack, we can watch anything you want.’
