You, too, can build this wavefolder now
because i made an article on it, with demos, photos, schematic and notes, and even a downloadable .zip with veroboard layouts, falstad simfiles, etc! Lyssa Wavefolder is my take on the Alisa 1377 synth harmonics section, which is dear to my ears - hence the name. It was retuned/augmented, though, so now it can go way beyound Alisa's stock sounds, very much earning its pun name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It packs a huge punch for just 8 op-amps (4 TL072s in my case) and a bunch of very common passives. Here's a 10Vpp triangle getting folded by it under different switch settings.
Here's a more complicated/complete patch using a sequencer and an envelope!
It also can (obviously) obliterate any complex sound, like a sample - but it's easier to control when processing simpler shapes like usual triangles/sawtooths. The signal path is DC coupled, so it's also a totally fun CV processor - put in a triangle LFO, get a weird motion out :D
While it may look slightly intimidating, it's actually one of the easier builds. It got a bit tedious with the six diode clipping pairs, but that's nothing too serious either. A good design to try for someone who already has their atari punk consoles and low pass gates figured and want a bit more. You can read (much) more on it and get the build materials pack at my SDIY website.

Escape Wavefold
Tumblr media
The alarms blared overhead, a screeching Romulan klaxon that Soji could hear like it was going off inside her own head. Between the taste of that horrid gas stuck in her mouth and the ringing in her ears, it felt like her skull was splitting open. She sucked down air greedily as she ran, moving on instincts she didn't know she had; everything felt distant and surreal, like it was happening to someone else, like this had to be a terrible dream. What else could it be? Soji ducked through a ventilation junction--she could hear rushing boots above and below her.
She left a bloody handprint on the wall as she swung around a corner and dropped down into the access tunnels--she was bleeding? She couldn't feel it but it made sense. She'd punched her way through the floor, through wood veneer and then Borg polycarbide alloy, broke through the deck like it was flimsy drywall. The Romulans on board were scrambling to intercept her--she could hear them calling tactical commands in the distance. She had to find help--she had no idea what to do or where to go. Mom! She had to call her mom--except her mom was fictional. Narek--Narek was the one trying to kill her. Dahj was on Earth. Who could she even--Hugh!
She had to find Hugh.
Soji had no idea how she knew where anything was. She'd never been inside the walls before, and she certainly didn't have a map, but the information was there. It was like keeping track of traffic around her on a street, the locations, speed, size of everything orbited in her periphery were all logged and some part of her brain just tracked it all. She knew there were two Romulans with disruptor rifles below her, four two decks above, and she could hear the footfalls of the scattered XBs in this section. It felt like she could hear everything--so where was Hugh?
She stopped for a moment, standing in a junction she didn't recognize, and realized that her badge was flashing in the dark. Horrified, she ripped it off, threw it to the ground, and promptly stomped it to dust. The klaxons were still ringing and Soji had to really focus to hear past them, past the orbiting bodies on the floors around her. In the end it wasn't really listening so much as feeling vibration, if even that, but she found him. How she knew it was him, she couldn't begin to explain, but she did.
Hugh wasn't in the grey zone but that was fine by her, wandering the defunct parts of the Artifact seemed like a much safer option right now. She broke into a sprint again, moving through the walls like she'd been one of the people who assembled them. Unfortunately, whatever innate sense was guiding her to Hugh, it didn't extend to finding logical exits from the intrafloor passages. She arrived by Hugh in minutes but he was on the other side of a wall.
Soji panicked at the idea of losing him as she went to find an exit--she wasn't thinking straight, not between the (now distant) alarms, her bloody knuckles, and everything else. She skidded into the wall as she failed to come to a quick stop from a dead sprint. The thump as she hit resounded but she kept her feet. Without hesitation, Soji began slapping the wall with her hands.
"Hugh! Help!" Soji called at the wall, desperate and terrified. "I don't know how to get out! I--Narek he tried to kill me--Please!" For @iamselfmade, I hope this works for you. If not, message me and I will happily adjust.

You want headphones or a nice stereo speaker for this. West coast IDM?
Both this piece and last, I've found myself really enjoying playing with the stereo field using Jumble Henge and Vice Virga - which is nice, because that was my intended pairing so many months ago when I picked them out!
Quite a few voices at play here. The background glitches are Banshee Reach, going through Ikarie tracking the same pitch, then Data Bender for saturation and glitches (as always!). The plucky lead is Ts-L's wavefold out through Sinc Bucina, then Melotus Versio. The panning is done first by rhythmically sending the sequence into 4 different parts of the field. Partway through the song, I bring in a copy of this lead bitcrushed by Noise Tools. Varying the sample rate and slew amount creates an almost filter-like effect. This clone chases the original through the stereo field, 2 steps behind, taking advantage of Vice Virga's ability to do 4:4 switching.
The kick is on a steady clock, and the rest of the percussion from Taiko/Daiko comes from Zularic Repetitor, which is itself manually taken through a number of patterns to add variety. Next patch, I really want to give 4 Bricks Rook one more honest go, but I don't know if it's for me since I'm just not that good of a finger drummer. I don't know if Zularic Repetitor is the ideal rhythm generator - I might want something more consciously playable like Knight's Gallop or with a higher creative ceiling like Leibniz - but I think it's better suited for my workflow.
Other sequencing comes from Bloom, Pam's, and Marbles - but it's impossible to keep track of what's what. By my next post I should have quite a few new modules, as well as many more patch cables, so it should be a different one. Very excited for the mail the next couple of days!

square peg, no hole
that won’t be my voice
and those
won’t be my words—
wavefolded then
gradually
turned down to a whisper and stuffed in a crack
in your wall,
my grails discarded for some pyrrhic victory, left contorting, forcing any space for me—
I don’t want to die anymore.
it’s lonelier, you know, sitting with you in this cemetery, than it’s ever been
alone. oh, sweet darling,
tell me,
if the rain waters our grave, do you think it will sprout nepenthes, or weeds?
beautiful, either way.

This school's security is useless. Though I doubt most people can keep Crow out of a place she wants to get in. No fighting this time though.
We had a very enlightening discussion about Battle Song. And I guess their ultimate verdict is that I couldn't have learned that what I've been using from any of them including Crow - because it is not Battle Song, at least not how they envisioned it.
They look the same on the surface, but they're mechanically different. Both use the concept of a Cycle to amplify power and speed and durability, but how they create and control the Cycle is different.
Crow's Battle Song is based on Rhythm. It's like applying a push on a swing at the optimal time to make it go higher and higher. You add energy at the right time, and you get a lot more bang for your buck. Conceptually simple but devastating all the same.
Whatever Lenore made is based on the concept of Resonance and Waves. You essentially generate a Wave within you and let it bounce within. And you know how sound gets amplified if you align the Waves just right? That's how she - and I guess me now - amplify the power. Lenore called the concept Wavefolding, which I didn't really understand at the time.
Now that I can actually practice it though, I can see why the demand for body control is so high with Lenore's method to the point where it cannot be practiced if you're still growing. Your body becomes the resonating chamber for the Battle Song; if you misalign the "waves" even slightly wrong, you won't get any amplification effect - too much destructive interference. But when you do get it right, it amplifies very quickly.
Whereas Crow's Rhythm method simply requires adding energy at the right time or even a slightly less optimal time. It's very consistent. And it also explains why there's so many practitioners of Battle Song in Crow's gang because the demand for body control isn't high.
Seems like Crow is a martial genius in both lives.
...But why'd she go in the direction that she did instead of Lenore's?

A month or two ago, I finally succeeded in using the Disting mk4's I-J algorithm, "Audio Playback." I was so excited about getting the recording of an overloaded washing machine ratting items in my apartment playing that I have yet to actually use its features other than play back an audio file.
In the video above, the rattling noise is run through a phaser effect on the FX Aid XL, as well as Ears. Ears is sending triggers and an envelope that at times modulates the phaser and the wavefolder on the Befaco Pony oscillator. The field recording also frequency modulates the oscillator at times. Finally, there is a channel of the oscillator ring modulated with the field recording.
When I got into modular, the idea of a fully analog signal chain appealed to me. Clearly, this patch relies heavily on digital modules, and it confirmed somewhat my hesitation to get digital modules. When I set the feedback too high on the phaser, it can get glitchy in appealing ways, but also in annoying clippy ways. I don't hate the digital artifacts or things that sound digitally processed, but it's not necessarily what I want out of Eurorack.

It's times like this, when I'm soft-synching my VCO 3340 from the Minibrute 2S's VCO 2, ring-modding its square wave by VCO 1's saw, and running the results into the "metalizer" wavefolder modulated by a fast S&H signal, that I miss having a working oscilloscope module, because this waveform sounds worth looking at.

Just kidding, of course i know what! Finished this bad girl today, the Lyssa Wavefolder. It's based on the harmonics section of my soviet favourite, the Alisa (1377). It is heavily augmented and retuned, though.

Intellijel Cascadia - Un Concentrato di Versatilità e Qualità Sonora
Tumblr media

More linked envelopes, more Constellation interplay.
Taiko and Daiko are sequenced here to be a more typical kick-snare, of course with their fair share of character too. Data Bender on the drum bus for rhythmic effects.
I'm once again using a series of related envelopes from Just Friends to control the main oscillator voice, with various envelopes going to destinations like wavefold amount, pre-filter VCA, and resonance. The main voice goes through Erbe-Verb.
There's an accompanying gated envelope from the divided clock and Maths occasionally letting a PWM-mix from the same oscillator through Ikarie and Ruina Versio. This rhythmically is interesting but I think it falls too much into the main voice - it probably deserved its own sequence instead of just divisions to really shine.
All in all, some fun sounds here but it feels a bit stale. Looking forward to having my second oscillator powered for variety and Planar for more expression after the weekend update. Monday I'm also hoping to really dive into the Constellation mod inputs. It's been too long.
